Gongs for Wigan Borough’s good traders

THE great and the good of Wigan Borough traders have been recognised at an annual awards ceremony.

The Good Trader Scheme Awards 2014, which was organised by Wigan Council’s Trading Standards and Licensing Section, saw seven traders win an award for their excellent service.

All winners are members of the Good Trader Scheme. The scheme is designed for companies and individuals who are trusted and respected in their field of work. Their commitment to providing quality, value for money work is recognised when they join, and residents are encouraged to use traders registered so that they know they are getting a good reliable service. The seven winners were: Good Trader of the Year (Wigan) – Andy Hidden, domestic electrician, Good Trader of the Year (Leigh) – S Walmesley decorators, Highly Commended (Wigan) – Expert Computers, Highly Commended (Leigh) – A & J Kitchen Fitters, Best Newcomer – Paul Burns, general handyman, Best Newcomer, Highly Commended – Westdene Landscape Gardening and Special Recognition Award – David Hobson of Hobson Roofcare.

The traders, who mainly work in the home improvement sector, were all judged on the quality and volume of customer feedback they have generated in the last 12 months and the contribution they make to the quality of service the scheme is able to provide. Andy Hidden, the winner of the Good Trader of the Year (Wigan), said: “I am delighted to be one of the award winners and proud to be a member of the scheme. It has been extremely valuable to my business and helped me to attract lots of customers. The fact they can leave their feedback about my work is great, as it helps to give me more credibility and mean potential customers have peace of mind that they are dealing with a reputable trader like myself.” David Hobson, who received the special recognition award, believes joining the scheme has had a positive effect. He said: “The scheme gives customers the knowledge they are using a trader they can trust, as they know that every business enrolled is accountable to Trading Standards and has committed to dealing fairly and honestly with their customers. Since joining in 2008, we've generated a lot of custom - allowing our business to grow.” Councillor Kevin Anderson, Wigan Council cabinet member for environment, said: “Wigan Council

understands how important it is to recognise traders who work hard to provide a high quality service to residents. “These seven traders are prime examples of this, and I congratulate them for their achievements. I would recommend all of them to borough residents, particularly as we want the public to support our local businesses – a key part of The Deal to make Wigan Borough a place where businesses can thrive.” To find out more about the Good Trader Scheme, visit www.wigan.gov.uk/goodtrader or call Consumer Direct on 08454 040506. Wood Fold visit local bowling club

CHILDREN from Wood Fold Primary School in Green Lane, Standish took part in a Bowling lesson at the end of June.

Throughout the day different groups of children had lessons in bowling at the St. Maries Bowling Green on Almond Brook Road, Standish.

Different moves were shown to them from volunteers from the club throughout the day. The bowling club is trying to raise donations to help them buy a Bradshaw Bowls Buggy for the club to help players with disabilities get around easier. The Bradshaw Bowls Buggy is a major breakthrough in the world of wheelchair bowling. Disabled bowlers can now take on able-

2

bodied players on equal terms because the new chair gives them free access to the entire playing surface. Rigorously tested, the Buggy has een declared suitable for use on all greens without any risk of damage to the playing surface. Not only does it offer those already playing bowls from a wheelchair much greater freedom, it will also allow many people who have suffered a stroke or similar disabling misfortune the opportunity to return to the game. If you would like to make a donation to the club towards the purchase of the buggy please contact the club via the website www.stmariebc.co.uk Our pictures show the children being taught the different moves.

STANDISH under Fives is a registered charity (1038046) run by a v o l u n t a r y committee In September 2013 Standish Under 5’s was delighted to welcome back families to a nursery building fit for purpose in the 21st Century! The setting is based in the grounds of Standish Community High School. This represented the culmination of months of hard work to secure funding and design a nursery absolutely suited to the families here in Standish. This improved facility has enabled staff to build on their current excellent provision and extend their offer further to meet family’s needs within the local

community. The Nursery is registered with Ofsted on the Early Years Register and the voluntary and compulsory parts of the Childcare Register. As a result of these developments we are now able to offer an extended service operating between the hours of 8am -5pm Monday to Friday during term time. There are currently 61 children on roll, all of whom are in the early years age range. This includes 33 children who receive funding for early education. A maximum of 54 children aged under five years old may attend the setting at any one time. The setting also runs a holiday club for children up to the age of 11 years. From September 2014 we will be able to accommodate children from 9 months old in our new baby facility taking

Pauline Harrison, the Vice Chair of Governors for Standish Community High School stated The Governors of Standish Community High School have been really keen to support this initiative as we are a community school that plays a key role in our local community. We have had a successful nursery on our premises delivering high quality early years provision for many years. Some of our pupils have also benefited from being provided with valuable work related learning experiences at the nursery. As Governors we were involved in the initial discussions about enhancing the nursery on

Vocational Qualification at level 3 and three staff will also be qualified to NVQ level 3 by September 2014. This achievement lies close to the heart of our Nursery Manager, Mrs Katie Wallington, who herself was a pupil at Standish before taking on a placement at the original nursery as a college student. Katie was inspired to focus her career on working with children and following this initial placement she was determined to create a successful career in this area. Ironically her determination to succeed has been of great benefit to Standish Under 5s as now Katie is our own Nursery Manager having followed her dream. After her initial placement Katie went on to working her way through college and then on to university were she achieved an early years foundation degree in early years, education and care. This enabled Katie, as a fully qualified professional to be appointed to the role of nursery manager. And finally, on 17th June 2014 we were delighted to celebrate the official opening of our new nursery facility. This was an afternoon of true c e l e b r a t i o n acknowledging the achievements of parents, staff and Governors all

our site and have been delighted to see this project go through from concept to completion. We therefore look forward to continuing this partnership and wish the nursery every success for the future. Our pictures show Katie at the official opening with members of the Board of Govenors and parent committe and below the children in the new undercover seating area.

APPRENTICE hairdressers from Wigan & Leigh College have battled it out at the annual Hairdressing Apprentice Style Awards – and raised over £600 for charity in the process.

More than 150 people attended Leigh Miners Welfare club to see the Level 3 students compete for the top prize, and proceeds from ticket sales on the night are being donated to Wigan & Leigh Hospice.

The apprentices were tasked with creating a look around the theme of ‘movies’ using hair design clothing and make up, and were supported by the College’s Level 3 Make Up students. The overall winner was Ashley Robinson who designed a Breakfast at Tiffany’s inspired look. Second place was awarded to Katie Longshaw for a look based on Moulin Rouge, while Emma Turner was third with a design inspired by The Butterfly Effect. The Apprentice Style Awards were sponsored by Dennis Williams Hairdressing Supplies and Wella, and the total amount raised for the Hospice was £611. Senior tutor Maria Houghton, who organised the event, said: “I am enormously proud of all the students and the Hairdressing team for all their dedication and enthusiasm. “I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the sponsors of the show, Wella, CKD and Dennis Williams Hairdressing Supplies for their continued support.” Our picture shows winner Ashley Robinson with mood board.

Sunshine House visit

COUNCILLORS Chris Ready and Ron Conway are pictured along with residents supporting the community group at Frenchwood Court.

Residents were visiting Sunshine House for pottery classes’ and lunch this which was provided by the local Councillors.

Councillor Ready said: “We support many groups with a small grant and where possible we attend the activity’s.” Gwen from Frenchwood Court committee said: “The support we get from our Councillors is fabulous and we wouldn’t be able to do the things we do without their help, they are not just our Councillors they are our good friends.”

THE majority of schools across Wigan Borough have now adopted the council’s Wigan Living Wage scheme resulting in a pay rise of around 88p an hour for many of the lowest paid members of staff - bringing their hourly pay up to £7.45 which equates to £180.56 extra a month, and £1,689 a year for those working a 37 hour week. Councillor Kenny, cabinet member for resources at Wigan Council said: “Schools face their own financial difficulties in these challenging times but we know the cost of living has soared in recent years with everything from food to fuel going up in price. Schools want to support their hard-working staff by helping them afford a basic standard of living.” More than 660 staff who work in schools across the borough have already benefitted and those who are seeing the biggest increase to their pay are manual and clerical workers. The move has been welcomed and backed by the borough’s trades unions. Unison Branch Secretary Tracy Roberts said: “Poverty pay and high prices mean daily misery for hardworking families. We are

pleased our members in Wigan schools will receive the increase. It will make a big difference to them and their families”. I hope the council build the Living Wage clause into all future contracts so that employees working for companies that provide services on behalf of Wigan Council, also stand to benefit from the increase.” David Hope GMB Branch Secretary said: “We are happy the schools have taken this positive step. Staff will be able to have a decent standard of living and give their families the essentials in life.” Wigan Borough schools have committed to implement the increase until March 2015 and will review it annually. The Wigan Living Wage supports and contributes to The Deal, the council’s informal contract with residents which makes a number of promises including to protect frontline services and freeze council tax in return for a commitment to creating a strong community where people take part in more activities such as recycling, fostering, and accessing services online.

STUDENTS are getting the chance to gain experience of working on a live construction site as part of Wigan & Leigh College’s £5.5m investment in its new Gateway Entrance.

The learners on the Extended Diploma in Civil Engineering and Construction have all been given a tour of the site on Parsons Walk before undertaking a rolling programme of work experience with Aspect Construction, which is carrying out the building work. The students spend Mondays and Tuesdays with Aspect, learning about the new build and the processes involved, while at the same time getting hands on experience. Wigan & Leigh College’s new Gateway Entrance will create a new and improved main entrance with a state-of-the-art building to house the main reception. The new building will also contain the student and employment services, as well as the Learning Resources Centre and the library. One of the learners taking part in this

initiative is Sam Arkwright, a first year student. He said: “In being given this superb opportunity to study and practise alongside a professional organisation such as Aspect I have learned industry standard skills. “Aspect hasn’t simply developed my skill base, but has helped in building the confidence in myself as a whole, and I am sure that if you asked any other of his placement students, they would say the same” Angela Daly, lecturer at Wigan & Leigh College said: “We believe that partnerships such as this one with Aspect are extremely valuable to our learners because they give them the chance to gain vital hands on experience while carrying out their studies. “Having a live construction site at the College has also provided our students with a once in a life time experience that will enable them to see the building take shape from the ground up and give them the sense of achievement that their work has contributed to that. It will give them pride when it’s finished and they get to use and enjoy the facilities it will provide.” Our picture show the students at the new Gateway entrance.

Wigan Borough roads named after World War One Heros 5

Courier

They were given the highest military award in honour of the outstanding bravery they showed during World War One.

Now Wigan Council is to name a road after each of the four local men awarded the Victoria Cross during the conflict. The Victoria Cross, or VC, is the highest military decoration awarded for valour “in the face of the enemy”. Four men from Wigan Borough were awarded the VC during World War One. They were Thomas Woodcock from Wigan, John Grimshaw from Abram, William Keneally from Ashton-in-Makerfield and Alfred Wilkinson from Leigh. The council has committed to naming a road after each of the men over the next four years as part of its programme to commemorate the centenary of World War One. The first road named in honour of the local VC winners has already been approved. Private Alfred Wilkinson will be recognised with a road named in his honour on a new housing estate in Bickershaw. The builders, Taylor Wimpey, and ward councillors have agreed the most prominent road on the estate should be called Wilkinson Park Drive. There are plans to erect a tribute to Private Wilkinson on the estate. He won the VC for the bravery he showed during the Battle of Selle in Marou in northern France in October 1918. He completed a daring mission across no man’s land. During the attack, four runners had been killed attempting to deliver a message to the supporting company. Private Wilkinson volunteered to relay the message and succeeded in that task despite the journey

THE WIGAN COURIER -

involving exposure to extremely heavy machine-gun and shell fire for 600 yards. Private Wilkinson, who served with the Manchester Regiment, later achieved the rank of lieutenant. He was born in Leigh in December 1896. He survived the trenches and returned to Leigh. Alfred married Grace Davies in 1932. He opened a sweet shop with his wife before going to work at Bickershaw Colliery. At the outbreak of the Second World War, Alfred joined the home guard. He continued working at the colliery where sadly he was killed in 1940. He died as a result of gas poisoning. He was buried with full military honours in Leigh Borough Cemetery. Fittingly, the road being named in his honour is located on the former Bickershaw Colliery site. Leader of Wigan Council, Lord Peter Smith, who is also the ward member for the area, said: “I’m very pleased we are recognising the extraordinary bravery of Private Wilkinson by naming a road in his honour. This is a fitting tribute and will ensure that the name of Alfred Wilkinson and all he did for his country will be remembered for years to come. We’ll now look for other opportunities to similarly honour the other brave local men awarded the VC during World War One. “The centenary gives us the opportunity to reflect and remember the impact of the war, which touched the lives of everyone across the borough. It is right we recognise and honour those who defended our country and remember the sacrifices people endured.” For more information about local events for the centenary of World War One, go to www.wigan.gov.uk.wigan100 or facebook.com/wigan100

Rain doesnt dampen the rugby veterans spirits!!

FORMER VETERANS of Wigan Rugby Union Club, ex-players from other clubs and both codes of rugby, supporters and friends once again pedalled the miles raising two thousand pounds for The Christie hospital in Manchester.

The seventh annual ride on June 7th was in memory of their former playing colleague and friend of many, Wigan lad Gerry Cooper who died of cancer in 2006 and was treated at Christies during his brave battle with the illness.

A record more than eighty riders endured horrendous weather and ground conditions to make the trip from Southport back to Sams Bar in Scholes, after calling at various hostelries for much needed refreshments. Organiser Malc Holland (pictured) said “After seeing the weather conditions first thing in the morning I feared the worst as regards numbers turning up but I should have never have underestimated the pull of The Christie. “The weather at times was atrocious, ground

conditions on our off road route were like a quagmire but despite this we had a record number of riders turn up. “The dismal weather was quickly put to one side as the riders enjoyed convivial hospitality and comradeship along the route. Upon reaching Burscough several riders sought a change of dry clothing at the local charity shop which quickly sold out of suitable male attire leaving a number adorning colourful ladies dresses with matching wedding hats! “Once again it was a brilliant day out, well supported and in memory of a top bloke, who we raised a glass to along the way. “I would like to thank not only the eighty two riders that took part but to everyone who donated to this very worthwhile cause with particular thanks to ‘mine hosts’ Jimmy and Terry at ‘Sams Bar’ who always make us so welcome’ As usual the ‘Vets’ are organising three fun fundraising charity rides over the summer months. The latest was on Saturday 5th July for the Steve Prescott Foundation, which also supports Christies, from Higher Wheelton back to Wigan. The ride started off from the Golden Lion at Higher Wheelton with an 11am meet up. Malc added ‘This was be a particular poignant ride as it was the first one since Steve’s untimely death last year and he always used to pop along on our ride to lend his support to a great cause. “He really was a lesson in courage for us all to learn.” This ride is followed on Saturday the 3rd of August for the final ride for Derian House Childrens Hospice. Malc added ‘All the rides are open to everyone, are all off road, are a great day out and of course, it’s all in a good cause’. Further information on the next ride is on the Vets facebook page. Full photos are here, courtesy Wigan World’s Brian Elsey: http://www.wiganworld.co.uk/newgallery/photos.php? opt=14bike1. The Veterans have now raised more than £33,000 for charity since starting their summer rides in 2007.

Jordan Allgood won best practical project for a music video they created to the Noah and the Whale song ‘Life Goes On’. Media lecturer, Natasha Hart, said: “All the student work submitted for the show was produced to an extremely high standard and we’re proud of all the students for the hard work they put into each of their projects. “We wanted the show to be a celebration of everything that the students have accomplished over their time with us in the College’s School for the Arts, and the students said that it gave them a real sense of achievement to see their work on the big screen. “The reaction from the public has been overwhelmingly positive and the screening is something we hope to make a regular feature in the media calendar every year.” Earlier this year the college secured funding for a new £17.8 million Arts Facility, which will replace the existing School for the Arts with a new state of the art building. Students get their careers on track

Two students at Wigan & Leigh College are starting out on their chosen career path after being awarded opportunities with Virgin Trains.

Lauren Holding, 19, was recruited by the company after attending the Virgin Talent Academy, and recently began her new job as a customer service assistant.

6

The teenager from Wigan achieved a Level 3 Diploma in Travel & Tourism before progressing on to the Cabin Crew Level 2 Diploma at Wigan & Leigh College. She is now travelling the country carrying out her duties. Lauren said: “When I went along to the academy I didn’t expect that I was going to get the job but thought it would be good experience. I was over the moon when I was told that I’d been accepted. “My course at Wigan & Leigh College has helped a lot with my new role as it covered a lot of the things I need to know in my job. I’m really enjoying it and learning a lot from my colleagues as well.” Lauren isn’t the only student from the College to be forging a path with Virgin Trains. Ryan Murphy, from Ashton, has just completed a five month work placement with the company at Wigan station. During that time he was tasked with a range of duties includingmaking station announcements, working in the office and on ticket sales. Ryan who is currently studying for the Level 3 Diploma in Travel & Tourism is hoping to eventually secure a job in the travel industry. The 17-year-old said: “My work experience placement with Virgin Trains was arranged as part of my course at Wigan & Leigh College which I think is great as it meant I could get some hands on experience. “I’ve really enjoyed every aspect of it, even the 5am starts, and hope to be able to use the things I’ve learned to help with my studies and in my further career.” Our picture shows Lauren Holding.

Mark Edwards is the man behind the farm and his vision, determinations and hard work has created a great local attraction. Mark said: ‘We want everyone who comes to us to have the best experience we are able to provide, every year we try and add something

7

else and the new extra-large adventure play-barn means we can have many more indoor events and not have to think about the British weather.’ Throughout the day you are invited to watch the animals being fed, ride in a tractor or barrel cart, watch birds of prey demonstrations, learn about snakes and lizards and if you’re brave enough you can hold them. You can bet on the sheep racing, that’s really good fun and its free and you win a small prize if your sheep comes in first. There are animals to pet in the guinea pig village, a beautiful shire horse called Benjamin, donkey’s, llamas, piglets, reindeer, cows, ferret racing etc. You can visit the snakes and lizards and insects and watch Sophie the cow being milked. You can play on the outdoor climbing frames and rope slide, drive round the pedal Go Cart track or just sit restfully in the open air and eat your picnic. There is something going on every day and on many occasions they have

special events and attractions as well. As the autumn draws in Farmer Ted’s slowly changes into the renowned Farmaggedon and becomes a creepy and eerie experience for Halloween. All the available indoor space is transformed into amazingly decorated rooms that you pass through and have the scariest time imaginable. One member of staff told us ‘Working here is never boring, we look after the animals, drive the tractors and then become vampires and ghouls, its different everyday.’ This Christmas, Mark is planning a spectacular Christmas extravaganza with a 50ft Tree, Santa in his workshop and an assortment of Christmas festivities. If you want to know what’s going on, just log onto the website This attraction is open almost all year round and well worth a visit, and you don’t have to pay to park your car, that’s free.

THE Mayor of Wigan Borough, Councillor Phyll Cullen, and Mayor’s Consort, Terry Cullen, led the annual Civic S u n d a y celebrations on Sunday June 15th.

WHEN FRANK Platt founded his own legal practice in Wigan in 1914, the world was a very different place. Legal firms jealously guarded their territory and clients. New solicitors were seldom made welcome, and advertising was strictly forbidden.

Frank was the son of a mine owner and mining contractor and studied law in Halifax before being articled to the Wigan firm of Hope and Garstang. Shortly afterwards Frank had two 'brass plates', outside offices in King Street in the town centre and also on the gate of his home in Hindley. Frank’s politics were radical; he acted as agent for Wigan’s first Labour MP John Parkinson, and he acted professionally for the National Association of Labour and Socialist Clubs throughout his life. The firm also acted for Wigan Rugby League Club, a responsibility which was taken up by the next generation in the form of Frank’s son in law Tom Fishwick. The firm became Platt and Fishwick after Frank’s daughter Avril, herself a lawyer in the family practice, married Tom who had been a distinguished pilot in the RAF during the war. The firm enjoyed massive growth in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s as Tom and Avril took the reigns with gusto, absorbing a vast amount of all kinds of legal work which it has continued to offer to Wigan people and businesses to this day. In 2014 the current partners are proud of the heritage and the service to the Wigan community provided by their firm and are now looking firmly forward to the next 100 years!

Each year, soon after the annual mayor making ceremony, the new mayor attends a Civic Sunday Service at a Church of their choice.

Councillor Cullen, who took over Mayoral duties from Councillor Billy Rotherham earlier in June, had chosen to hold her Civic Sunday service at St Andrew’s C of E Church on Mort Street in Springfield, WN6 7AU. The new Mayor said: “I was looking forward to the celebrations. St Andrew’s C of E Church is very close to my heart and was the perfect venue to hold this. It is the start of what I know will be an exciting year ahead.” Local band, Old Hall Brass Band led the procession outside the

Wigan Rotary Dragons help our community groups

FROM support for a pre-school to help for both the physically and mentally disabled , ten happy local groups went away with a donation from the recent Wigan Rotary Clubs Dragons Den event.

Approaching twenty organizations applied this year and the three dragons, Rotary President Terry Hogan, former Westfield Children’s Centre manager Aujke Clegg OBE, and chartered accountant Peter Cheetham, invited ten groups to pitch for a share of the pot – a worthy amount of £5000.

Wigan Rotary President Terry Hogan said,’ It has been a tremendous evening and the Club is delighted to be able to help the wonderful work undertaken in our borough. In these hard economic times it is surprising the difference a few hundred pounds can

8

make. It is also humbling to see how many people are prepared to give up their time to help others.’ He continued ‘However, this event would not be possible without the generous donations of the Wigan residents mainly from last December when we accompanied Santa and his sleigh around the area. We trust this Dragons Den event shows we are using their donations wisely and for the benefit of the local community.’ A full list of the donations together with more information about the work of Wigan Rotary Club can be found on their website at www.wiganrotaryclub.org.uk or ring 07813 471000 Our picture shows: Front Row Left to Right - Wigan Rotary Dragons, Aukje Clegg OBE, Wigan Rotary President Terry Hogan, and Peter Cheetham together with a representative of each of the ten successful groups.

WINSTANLEY & Worsley Mesnes Community Sports Club is among 324 local sports projects to secure a share of £17 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund.

Amanda says a big thank-you

AMANDA Carney owner of the Village Hair Design Salon celebrated 10 years in the Salon on High Street, Standish on June 21st.

Amanda would like to say a big thank you to everyone who took the time to come to the Salon to help her and her staff celebrate this milestone. Amanda has successfully run the business through the last ten years due to the friendly atmosphere of the salon, the great staff she has employed during the years and the loyalty of all her customers who she would like to thank for their continued support. On the day everyone enjoyed a glass of Prosecco, nibbles and cupcakes and Amanda received

many congratulations cards and flowers. Throughout June raffle tickets were given away for 10 prizes, one for each year the Salon has been open and there are still the following numbered tickets to be claimed.

Amanda said: “It was a great day for everyone and I am now looking forward to the next ten years, and once again thanks to everyone who helped make the day special.”

Since 2011, Inspired Facilities has been helping breathe new life into tired community sports facilities and converting existing buildings into venues suitable for grassroots sport. Winstanley & Worsley Mesnes Community Sports Club will receive £65,000 of National Lottery funding to upgrade the playing fields at Little Lane, which helps hundreds of local people to play football each week. The improvements will include a grid system of primary and secondary drainage, with the installation of a new pipe drainage system and sand slitting. Sport England Property Director, Charles Johnston, said: “The Inspired Facilities Fund has had a huge impact on grassroots sport across the country. Since 2011, we’ve invested £88 million into more than 1,600 projects to improve and refurbish sports clubs and transform nonsporting venues into vibrant community sports clubs. “It’s great to see Winstanley & Worsley Mesnes Community Sports Club join the long list of successful clubs to benefit from this fund.” Club Chairman, Shaun Rotherham, said: “We are delighted to have secured this investment, which along with the Wigan Council funding and our own fundraising means over £120,000 will be spent upgrading the quality of our playing fields at Little Lane. This is a tremendous step forward for Winstanley Warriors, Winstanley St. Aidan’s and the community in general as it will provide an opportunity to utilise this facility to its full potential. It will also help with the continued expansion and growth of the Club. The application process to secure the funding for this project was a real team effort which included representations from the Sports Club, Local Councillors, the Lancashire County FA and £45,000 of match funding from Wigan Council.”Yvonne Fovargue MP said: “This investment by Sport England into the Winstanley and Worsley Mesnes area is fantastic news. There is a strong sporting tradition in the area and this money is an investment in young people for today and for the future and I congratulate all involved in securing this success.”Many more communities are set to benefit from

the hugely popular fund, with the latest round of the Inspired Facilities now open. Community and voluntary organisations, councils and schools can bid for a share of £20 million to help upgrade facilities that can be unattractive, expensive to run and difficult to

maintain, and to convert existing non-sporting buildings into venues that are suitable for grassroots sport. Applying for funding has never been easier. Based on feedback from previous applicants, the Inspired Facilities Fund is now an open programme which means

The floral displays in public places, created and maintained by a dedicated group of volunteers, help to make Standish a colourful and attractive place throughout the year.

AWARD-WINNING ‘Standish in Bloom’ has been running successfully for many years and has had a great impact on the township and its residents, whilst at the same time promoting Standish to the visitors and commuters who pass through.

These, together with hundreds of individual front gardens, contribute to what ‘Standish in Bloom’ is all about--the creation of a pleasant local environment for residents and visitors. Our photograph shows a group working in Standish Market Place, along with Cllr George Fairhurst who supported the purchase of plants once again through the council’s Brighter Borough Scheme. The Brighter Borough initiative is a fund provided by Wigan Council to enable elected members to support and influence environmental improvements and community development schemes proposed by volunteer groups within their ward. Councillor Fairhurst said: "I have supported Standish in Bloom since being elected in 2004 and will continue to do so as I think this is a great community event and Keith and the volunteers do a great job."

Strictly dances its way to the community centre

THE Standish Community Centre held a recent tea dance at the end of June and as usual everyone had a great time.

Organisers Christine Williams, Ann Wilson and Maria Fairhurst made it a great afternoon by providing home made cakes, tea and coffee whilst everyone danced to their favourite tunes.

The Centre in Moody Street, Standish has had a revamp over the last couple of weeks thanks to the generosity of the Cooperative supermarket on Market Street, Standish who have taken them on as their Charity. Volunteers from the Centre and the supermarket manned paint brushes and rollers to redecorate the walls in the main halls and meeting rooms. New carpets were also laid. The Centre is getting a new lease of life and wants the public to go along and enjoy the facilities on offer. An official open day will take place on July 11th at 2 p.m. where the Co-operative will be the guests of honour to cut the ribbon, have a picture taken and slice the celebration cake. Everyone who took part in the painting weekend are invited to help celebrate. The Centre is open from 10am for coffee and you can hire the rooms on hourly basis. Please call in or ring 01257421048 for details of what's on. The next tea dance will be on Friday 18th July 1.30 - 3.30 p.m. Our pictures show our dance line up with organisers Maria Fairhurst, Ann Wilson and Christine Williams.

The funding is part of a three-year £2 million project called Make Your Move, which aims to increase opportunities to participate in sport at a local level in innovative and creative ways.

WLCT will use the money to introduce the MyFamilyFitness programme, which will provide family-friendly participation opportunities through exercise classes, fitness and sports sessions, focusing on deprived communities with the highest levels of inactivity and obesity. Stuart Murray, Chief Executive of WLCT, said: “This is the first time we have successfully bid for funding to carry out a project across all three of our contract areas, so we are especially delighted with this award. We are all about getting people active and the MyFamilyFitness programme will give a real boost to our work in the

400026

local communities.” Councillor Paul Kenny, Wigan Council cabinet member for leisure, said: “It is great news that WLCT has secured this money. Getting our residents more active is a key aim of the council. We want to help people live healthier lives and taking regular exercise is an important part of that. It’s great this money will help fund a scheme for families as we want to see all ages participating in sport.” The Sport England National Lottery Funding is being distributed by Sporta, the representative body for leisure and cultural trusts in the UK. Leisure trusts are able to apply for up to £50,000 and in the first round 13 different projects throughout the UK are being supported. Brian Leonard, Sporta’s CEO, said: “The Make Your Move campaign is about increasing participation in sport at a local level. By funding projects designed by local trusts and created specifically for local people, the Make Your Move campaign can make a real difference to local people. This, in turn, offers true benefits to these trusts’ local communities.”

Julie Unsworth and friend and colleague Beverley Higham opened the first ‘Pop up Spa’. The event was sponsored by Beverley’s new innovative product range called the Potion Shop which is based on organic non chemical ingredients. The range is all natural and can be used by vegetarians as it is not tested on animals. The aim of the day was to create a retreat which was relaxing and uplifting for those who took part, but not to skimp on quality by reducing timing of treatments or using cheaper products. It consisted of refreshments on arrival, consultation, and checking requirements of the clients. Next was to use the hotel facilities of pool, sauna and Jacuzzi this enables the body to get the most out of the massage later. Then came the full body massage either Aromatherapy or Swedish depending on the client’s needs, followed by a full facial and head massage. Nails were then filed ready for polishing after lunch. Lunch was in the restaurant and consisted of healthy wraps and salad with jacket potatoes, but for those who liked a little indulgence there was always the chocolate gateaux for sweet. If you wanted drinks could be bought from the bar. The clients could have the choice then to go back into the hotels spa area if they wished. Once dressed nails were painted and allowed to dry over coffee or tea and biscuits. The ‘Pop up Salons’ are aimed at groups of people who would like us to go to them, such as hen and birthday parties, baby showers as we can do pregnancy massage as well, we can also de-stress in workplaces, with managers permission of course. However we plan to do them monthly at the Britannia for those in this area. One couple from Crewe who happened to be in the hotel on that day have booked for the September one already. The price of the Britannia Spa Ritual

Experience was just £50 for all of the above. If you wanted to make it a little more special you could stay over at the hotel and buy champagne or bring your own to enjoy on the balcony or in the jacuzzi. Our therapists are hand-picked by us and we call them the ‘Dream Team’, as they have such amazing skills in massage. We can offer tailored treatments to suit your needs from beauty Therapy to complementary therapy. If you want to book for the September Package at the Britannia or organise your own event in your own premises then please give us a call on 07952783338 or email thefinishingschool1@gmail.com and leave a message. The Wigan Couriers Michelle Hafez who went along to the first Pop Up Salon experience said: "I had a great time from start to finish. The day started with an hour in the pool, jacuzzi and steam room where everyone got to know each other. We then joined the team on the balcony to prepare for our luxurious two hours of pampering with full massage and facial finished off with a head massage." "We then enjoyed a leisurely healthy lunch in the restaurant and then changed ready for the final treatment which was a file and polish." "All the team of therapists were very good at all the treatments and the products used from The Potion Shop left you feeling cleansed and relaxed." I will definately be going back to enjoyed another of the experiences and fully recommend you book and go along. To find out more about the Potion Shop products please visit the website www.potionshop.co.uk and there you will find out all about these fantastic products. Our picture shows Michelle enjoying the treatments with Shiraz her therapist for the day.

WE'RE ALREADY familiar with the three- door Pro_cee’d GT, but now there’s a more practical fivedoor version to go with it. And although it costs £505 more there’s no sacrifice in terms of weight, performance or fuel economy.

The Cee’d GT is powered by the same 201bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, hits 0-62mph in 7.4 seconds and returns claimed economy figures of 38.2mpg and 171g/km of CO2. All those numbers lag behind the facelifted 247bhp, 41.5mpg Ford Focus ST, but Kia’s intention was always to build an affordable ‘warm’ hatch, and in that respect the GT is a roaring success. The engine starts to pull hard from as little as 1,750rpm and keeps going all the way to 7,000rpm. At no point does the GT feel particularly fast, but it means you can use all of the throttle travel more often and have fun without necessarily breaking the law. Where the Cee'd GT falls short of the Focus ST and VW Golf GTI is in steering feel, which is a touch artificial and lacks feedback. However, with stiffer springs and dampers, bigger brakes, a thicker

anti-roll bar and stickier tyres it handles very neatly indeed – the trade-off is a jittery ride at low speeds, although things smooth out as you up the pace. Considering the £20,500 starting price (£6,485 less than the cheapest five-door Golf) interior quality is impressive, and a sign of how far Kia has come, with plenty of soft-touch surfaces and gloss black trim. There’s loads of space in the back, while the rear doors improve access and make it a lot less gloomy than the threedoor.. And while the Pro_cee’d has the edge when it comes to styling, the five-door looks fantastic with its ‘ice-cube’ LEDs, GTIstyle pinstripes and 18inch wheels.

New MG coming

MG HAS begun work on a new two-seater sports car to succeed the MG TF, and it will arrive before the end of the decade.

A spiritual successor to the MG TF two-seat sports car will enter production soon, an inside source has confirmed. And although there’s no official launch date it should be on sale well before the end of this decade. An MG insider confirmed bosses have been discussing a return to the open-top sports car market, and want to make it happen just as soon as the British brand has re-established itself under SAIC ownership. As a result an exact timeframe has not yet been agreed, however MG recently revealed it’s working on two new vehicle architectures, one of which will be designed capable to support a compact roadster, according to our source. Both these platforms are being designed to offer similar levels of flexibility as the VW Group’s MQB layout, with the ability to large numbers of components and engines to help slim down costs. And it’s believed the twin architectures will see four new MG models launched across different markets by 2020. While a sportscar is clearly a perfect fit for the MG brand, and just what it needs to build worldwide recognition, it’s understood that its chances of reaching showroom hinges on the success of volume models that will come to market first. The most important of these is a SUV based on the CS Concept, due in 2015, while a Ford Focus-rivalling MG5 is also in the pipeline along with a more compact Nissan-Jukesized SUV. Chinese-based SAIC’s UK Technical Centre is also working on a number of new engine families, including higher power 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol units ideal for a sports car application. While a traditional front-engined rear-wheel drive layout is believed to be the front-runner for a new MG sportscar, the MG TF successor might not be the only roadster in the lineup either. Bosses are still weighing up the production possibilities of the convertible version Icon conept – creating a halo model for the brand that should go down well in China, where sportscars only make a tiny percentage of total sales.˚

JUNIOR pupils of Woodfield School with Max the Warriors’ mascot and the real life Challenge Cup!!

Woodfield pupils celebrate National Sport Week

PUPILS FROM Woodfield Primary School joined thousands of young people from across England and Wales by taking part in a range of sports and activities to celebrate National School Sport Week.

This is delivered by the Youth Sport Trust and is a celebration of PE and sport encouraging all children to take part in 5 hours of physical activity. The opening ceremony was attended by Darren Bond, FA Championship Referee, who talked about his refereeing career. During the day he did football training and a penalty shoot-out competition for Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 classes

On the Tuesday we had Wigan Warriors Community Foundation who organised a Sports Day for the whole school. Lots of fun! Wednesday was a basketball tournament for the Juniors, and zumba classes for whole school with Sarah, zumba instructor. Friday was a brilliant finale with George Williams, Wigan Warriors Rugby Player, giving a presentation to the whole school about his career. The event was closed by the visit from Kim Baptista, 13 year old student from Abraham Guest Academy. She currently holds the title of BMX World Champion for her age range. She gave an inspiring talk on her career in cycling and athletics. The children were thrilled when she gave a

won us the game, as player-for-player, we were the better team on paper. Our defenders should have been glued to Luis Suarez to make sure he didn’t dictate the game, but two separate mistakes cost us the game. There was no hunger and no desire to win the game after we went 2-1 down. And that’s the problem. The likes of the Algeria had many players in their squad who were ecstatic to represent their country at a World Cup. Many English

16. The European team scraped through in extra time, but it just shows how far an unfancied team can go with hard work, dedication and teamwork. The same can’t be said for England. You know there are problems when the country that created football can’t beat a Central American nation of just four million people. The fact is that we’re simply not good enough. On the one hand, you could say that sweeping changes need to be made to academy setups across the country, encouraging a new breed of talented English players and limiting the amount of foreign players clubs can buy. However, look at some of the teams that made the last 16: Nigeria, Algeria, and Switzerland. The likes of Rooney, Sterling, Gerrard and Cahill could walk easily into those sides and become their star players. It’s too easy to blame clubs for not producing enough English players. The side Roy Hodgson fielded against Uruguay should have

Wigan Athletic youth academy graduate Leighton Baines. He became the first ever ex-Latics youth player to represent his country at the tournament, a massive achievement for everyone involved in the Latics. Uwe Rosler has also been busy signing new players for the new Championship season. Full-back Andy Taylor has joined from recently relegated Cardiff, and he’ll link up with ex-Patrick Thistle player Aaron Taylorand Sinclair promising youngster James Travernier in defence. However, the signing I’m most looking forward to seeing in action is Spanish striker Oriol Riera, signed from Osasuna. The 27year-old is a proven goalscorer (he netted 13 in the league last season) and will add some much needed firepower up front

Aaron Taylor-Sinclair

players see it as a hindrance. Why play for England when you can go on holiday for a couple of weeks? As Harry Redknapp recently revealed, some international players even begged him to take them out of the England squad when he was at Tottenham. It’s such a shame that lots of players see representing their country as a problem, and not as a privilege. Unless this changes, we will never equal the triumphs of 1966. Despite this, one player I’m sure was delighted to play at the World Cup was

following the departure of loanee Nick Powell. The last word in this month’s column has to go to legendary goalkeeper Mike Pollitt. He’s signed a new contract to continue as a goalkeeping coach, but has officially retired from playing. He played 52 times for us since joining back in 2005 and has been the club’s longest serving player, also being the last remaining member of the side that got to the League Cup final in 2006. It’s just a shame he’s retired one year shy of his testimonial!

Statue of Billy in Wigan? - sounds a great idea!!

LIKE SO many other gods, it seems the gods of Rugby League give with one hand and take away with the other.

Highfield Hawks are the best dressed team in town!

HIGHFIELD Grange Hawks kit at their training base, Oldham’s FC U10s are the best dressed Fold, Orrell. Coach, Steve Wilkinson said: team in the town thanks to an “WeTeam are grateful to Cllr Morgan and award of Brighter Borough Wigan Council for the generous donation. Funding (BBF) from Cllr “The team will be very proud to wear Marie Morgan, Winstanley the striking new kit with the council logo which will be seen by many parents and Ward. spectators on match days.” The team of football fanatics gathered Cllr Marie Morgan said: “I was this week ahead of a pre-season delighted to help the Hawks with this training session to show off the new donation which has been put to good use.

The Hawks are working very hard to be the best that they can be and sport is such a great way for the boys to keep fit and healthy as well as form friendships both on and off the field. “Behind the scenes Mums & Dads work hard to keep the club running smoothly so as a local councillor, Brighter Borough Funding is such an effective way for me to show my support for our local sports and community groups.”

No sooner were Wigan fans returning the return to the fold of prodigal son, Joel Tomkins – the announcement of whose re-signing at half-time during the Widnes game a couple of weeks ago literally brought the house down – than they were left pondering the impending departure of another local lad made good, Darrell Goulding. The return of Joel didn’t exactly come out of the blue, as those who keep half an eye on Rugby Union will know. Though he hasn’t been poor in the 15-a-side code, he hasn’t had the same impact that Jason Robinson or Chris Ashton did (off the top of my head, those are still the only two Brits who’ve made the transition without a hitch and managed to retain their ‘superstar’ status). This is no criticism of Joel, of course. The two games are more different than people might realise, particularly for a guy who is essentially a hard-battling forward and who loves to be in the thick of it rather than out on the windswept flanks. In addition to all this, there’d been rumours for some time that Joel had been chatting to Wigan players and eyeing up the possibility of returning to his roots. It was still fantastic to see it confirmed, and to see the lad himself get such a rapturous welcome from the fans he entertained so royally, particularly at Wembley in 2011, when he scored one of the most dramatic individual tries the grand old stadium has ever seen. But then, as I say, we heard

that Darrell Goulding was leaving. Again, this was no great surprise. As always at Wigan, rumours have been rife that we can expect a raft of departures at the end of this season, and Goulding’s name has figured several times. But that doesn’t mean it’s not a pity. Darrell Goulding has been one of Wigan’s quiet achievers; a prolific try-scorer under Michael Maguire, when he played on the wing, but in the eyes of many a natural centre. He has certainly provided great service over the years for Josh Charnley, who really made his name as a fleet-footed striker while Goulding was the guy inside him. It always surprises people that Goulding, though he was included in the England squad in 2010, has never won his full international spurs, though personally I think that says more about the England coach and selectors than it does the player. And it’s not as if natural centres are a regular feature of the British game these days. Aside from Goulding, the last one Wigan really had was George Carmont, who retired in 2012. Anyway, for whatever reason – and it’s been kept well under wraps, to the fury of the usual suspects amid the ranks of Cherry and White keyboard enthusiasts – Goulding is now heading to the east coast next year to play for Hull KR. I personally wish him well, and I’m sure the vast majority of my fellow Wigan fans will do the same. Where this will leave Wigan with regard to their three-quarters, I’m not entirely sure. This is definitely a section of the current Wigan squad where I have concerns. While Joel Tomkins can be a barnstorming centre on his day, the clever money is on

Paul Finch is

The Insider

Wigan Warriors from the Inside Out...

him playing in the back row as a direct replacement for Harrison Hansen (whose absence has been especially noticeable in the last two weeks, when Wigan’s pack have succumbed to opposition forwards at Wakefield and St Helens, who, man for man are quite inferior). So, as things stand, that leaves Dan Sarginson, Iain Thornley and Anthony Gelling vying for the two centre spots in 2015. How do you await that – with excitement, or trepidation? No-one could deny that Gelling has done enough to earn himself a starting shirt this year. Some powerhouse performances in recent weeks have endeared him to the fans, and he certainly fits the modern centre style, being a big, raw-boned handful of a bloke. The same could be said of Thornley, whose size and speed are great assets, combined with quite a bit of finesse – but neither are what I’d call true centres. At least, not yet. And neither is Dan Sarginson, whose electrifying pace and footwork make him more a natural for the wing or full-back role, in my book. Ultimately, of course, I’m not choosing. The club have made it pretty clear they are happy to go with what they currently have in the centre slots. They’ve done this before in the past, and have nearly always been proved right. But I’m not sure that’s completely the end of the story. Rumours continue to run riot, and while Wigan have really made their mark in terms of utilising youth talent these last few years,

they’ve also made unexpected signings when they’ve deemed them necessary. On the subject of sensational three-quarters, I was delighted this week to see a story that Wigan’s greatest try-scorer of them all, Billy Boston, may be honoured with a statue to be installed on a plinth in the town centre sometime next year. The project, which will be the work of Hull-based artist, Steve Winterburn, is estimated to cost around £100,000, and calls have now gone out for Wigan fans to assist, an appeal which has the backing of the some of the sport’s biggest names. At the same time, Winterburn will be working on a second statue featuring Billy, which is due to be installed outside Wembley Stadium, and will also include four other legends, two of them former Wigan stars: Eric Ashton, Martin Offiah, Alex Murphy and Gus Risman. It sounds to me like a worthy cause by almost any standards. For those interested, payments can be made direct to the bank, via the account ‘The Billy Boston Statue Trust’, number 33910660, sort code 20-9637, while cheques can be made payable to The Billy Boston Statue Trust and sent to: The Billy Boston Statue Trust c/o Central Park, Montrose Avenue, Wigan, WN5 9XL. Once the appeal has reached £5,000 the Trust will apply for charity status and donations can then be made online. For more info, log on at www.buildbilly.org.

Fran Cotton unveils Flybe tribute aircraft

WIGAN rugby union legend Fran Cotton was on hand with his teammates from the Invincibles, the Lions of 1974, to unveil Flybe’s special tribute aircraft at Belfast Airport.

Flybe, Europe’s largest regional airline, has paid a unique tribute to the rugby heroes who formed an integral part of the legendary 1974 British and Irish Lions Squad. ‘The Invincibles’, a specially named Q400 aircraft, was unveiled at George Best Belfast City Airport on June 19th in the presence of 18 squad members that included prop forward Fran Cotton, who started his playing career in Wigan. The legendary players were flown in by Flybe from Scotland, England and Wales and included Roger Uttley, Alan Morley, JPR

Williams, Phil Bennett, Andy Irvine and Dick Milliken. The Flybe unveiling was conducted as a surprise activity to coincide with the 40th Anniversary reunion of the world-respected squad that was organised by the Belfast-based Wooden Spoon Children’s Charity, of which Irish squad member Willie-John McBride is currently President. Fred Kochak, Flybe UK Routes’ Director, said: : “In May 1974 a squad of 34 rugby players from Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales formed the British and Irish Lions Squad to travel to South Africa. They were to play against a country not beaten in 78 years. “When they returned in July 1974, having won 21 of their 22 matches and drawing the other, they returned as ‘The Invincibles’

and were widely regarded as the greatest northern hemisphere side of all time. “Their passion, commitment and determination is legendary and we are delighted to make our own unique tribute to what they achieved and the values they continue to represent. “Dedicating an aircraft to such sporting icons is our special way of saying congratulations and a thank you to them. As she flies across the Flybe route network, we hope that ‘The Invincibles’ will act as an inspiration to others”. The Flybe Q400 will sport a life-size image of Willie-John McBride framed within a set of rugby posts. Below the crossbar are listed the 34 names of the entire 1974 British and Irish Lions Squad. Alongside the image is the new name of the aircraft, ‘The Invincibles’.

Mr Kochak added: “The Invincibles’ team celebrates its 40th anniversary today and Flybe recently marked its 30th year operating out of George Best Belfast City Airport. “Two very different milestones, but both demonstrate a strong legacy of achievement and commitment which is assured well into the future, both here and throughout the rest of the UK.” Flybe has previously named five other aircraft to honour local sporting heroes – George Best and Mary Peters in Belfast, Kevin Keegan in Newcastle, Matt le Tissier in Southampton and Adam Stansfield in Exeter. Our picture shows the English members of the 1974 squad with the Flybe Cabin Crew, the Lions skipper Willie John McBride, and legendary Wigan prop Fran Cotton 3rd from right.
