One of his major achievements was helping to set-up Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust.

Brian has also represented the council on a long list of outside bodies, including Civic Host Association, Partnership of Public Employers in Europe, Local Government Association General Assembley and Greater Manchester Pension Fund, to name but a few.

Brian was made an Honorary Alderman at a full Council meeting earlier this month. He was given a standing ovation after members of the council thanked him for his tremendous service.

“He was a diligent and committed ward councillor for more than 30 years and a leading figure within the council, serving on several committees and in the cabinet.

“He also represented Wigan Borough on many important national committees. As he enjoys his retirement, he can look back with pride at his time in local government and it is only right his impressive contribution is officially acknowledged.”

FIVE YOUNG people from Standish travelled to St. James’ Palace, London, to be presented with their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

IT NOW seems quite a while since Christmas but as the group doesn’t meet in January, meeting have just recommened.

As part of our festival celebrations a good number of ladies travelled by coach to the Briars Hall Country House Hotel, Lathom, where all enjoyed a superb traditional Christmas Lunch followed by entertainment.

We are now looking forward to welcoming a number

of speakers prior to our Annual General meeting in April, as well as organised social evenings and outings which takes place on average once per month.

Towards the end of February a lunch has been arranged at The Owls and in March and May smaller groups are going on a guided tour of media City, Salford.

Deacon and Lewis Smith, Jonathon Ashton, Nicole Thomason and Hannah Smith, spent an afternoon at the Palace, after completing their Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award with the Church Lads’ and Church Girls’ Brigade.

The five members had to complete a four day, 50 mile trek through the Lake District, starting at Shap and walking the coast to coast route, finishing at Ravenglass, as well as, helping the local community, learn a new skill, and complete a residential stay.

The group also had to present an account of their expedition to Duke of Edinburgh assessor, Arthur Sheldon, their D of E leaders, Gemma Fielding and John Greenhalgh, and the Parents’ and Friends’ Association.

Whilst at the Palace the group rubbed shoulders with Royalty, meeting the Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward.

Young people from across the country, and further, came to the presentation- one person even travelled from Australia to received her certificate.

TV Presenter and winner of Strictly Come Dancing 2009 Chris Hollins, BBC Breakfast Presenter Susanna Reid, and TV Presenter Ben Shephard also attended the presentation who praised the young people for their hard work. Each spoke to the award winners about their jobs and Chris Hollins even showed off his moves by dancing around the Palace!

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme is the world’s leading achievement award for young people aged between 14-24. The award is run by youth clubs, voluntary organisations, schools, colleges, Young Offenders Institutions and businesses.

MEET the new poster girls for Wigan Internet safety.

Hannah Rose Ridsdale and Valda Boswell are spelling out how important it is to stay safe online through giant eye-catching posters that they have designed.

The girls’ works of art will be displayed at venues across Wigan Borough as part of this week’s Safer Internet Day events. Hannah Rose, 10, and Valda, 15, both entered a competition run by the Wigan Safeguarding Children Board (WSCB) that asked young people to get their designs for a Safer Internet message down on paper.

Kath Vereycken from WSCB explains: “Technology is changing so rapidly and there are lots of exciting benefits for children and young people but they can also present some risks in the form on E-Bullying and other potential threats.

“We wanted to help raise awareness about some of these potential threats and what steps young people can take to protect themselves. We asked children and young people in the borough to come up with their own poster designs and we weren’t disappointed with the results.”

The WSCB had lots of great entries but HannahRose’s and Valda’s stood out. Unable to choose between them, the board awarded them both the first prize of having their design’s professionally made up.

Kath adds: “We have now publishing and distributing the posters throughout the community to coincide with Safer Internet Day. Safer Internet Day (Tuesday February 5) is a global event which promotes safer and more responsible use

Wigan Council’s centre in Cumbria is rated “excellent”

AN OUTDOOR centre near Coniston in the Lakes, owned by Wigan Council, has been rated “excellent” by the young people who’ve stayed there.

They were asked to rate the accommodation, activities, food and staff as either poor, OK, good or excellent. The results show 98 per cent said the activities were excellent. The accommodation was rated as either excellent or good by The Brathay Trust runs the centre 85 per cent while the quality of food on behalf of the council, and scored 77% excellent or good.

“The two poster designs really do spell out what common-sense measures anyone should take when using the internet and both girls should be congratulated on their fantastic designs. We hope our children and young people will get the message and put safety first when surfing the web.”

A FORMER Deputy Leader of Wigan Council and his wife have celebrated 50 years of living in the District of Shevington by creating a DVD of their local area.

Chair of Wigan Borough Environment and Heritage Network, John O’Neill, and his wife Barbara have commissioned a new DVD, ‘Our StoryShevington with Lower Ground’.

The one and a half hour DVD explores the history of Shevington and its surrounding areas, including Shevington, Shevington Moor, Shevington Vale, Appley Bridge, Crooke and Standish Lower Ground.

The DVD explains how

the whole district was transformed during the Industrial Revolution by the construction of the Leeds to Liverpool Canal

and the exploitation of the area’s rich coal reserves.

films local schools, voluntary groups and Associations and looks at what they are doing to enrich the area of Shevington.

Researcher and writer of the DVD, John O’Neill, said: “I hope that the DVD will inspire and encourage other communities across our Borough to tell their story in this, and other ways, for posterity.”

For the production of the DVD John enlisted the help of Tradition Films, who produced the popular Our Heritage DVD, which highlighted heritage sites around Wigan Borough.

Along with the DVD, John has also been responsible for an on-

going series of historical booklets focusing on the individual areas within the District.

Mission Christmas works throughout Lancashire every year to help

thousands of children in our local areas in all kinds of situations to provide support for children with disabilities, life limiting illnesses or those who live in difficult situations.

Richard Paxton, centre director of The Galleries, commented: “The Galleries were delighted to support the Mission Christmas appeal, we were overwhelmed by the generosity of our shoppers, store staff and centre staff and together we made lots of children happy!”

Nikki Thompson, charity manager at Rock FM said, “This year’s appeal has been the biggest by far and the level of support from shoppers at The Galleries Shopping Centre, schools, colleges, businesses and others has been incredible.”

Galleries raises £240,000

THE GALLERIES Shopping Centre would like to thank its thousands of shoppers who supported Rock FM’s Mission Christmas appeal.

The shopping centre provided drop off boxes and appealed to shoppers and staff to provide Christmas gifts for Mission Christmas, an appeal run by Rock FM and Cash for Kids to provide gifts for children who otherwise would wake up to nothing on Christmas Day.

2012 was the biggest year so far for Mission Christmas and thanks to the generosity of shoppers,

store staff and centre staff of The Galleries along with the Lancashire public, businesses and schools raised more than £240,000 worth of gifts, toys and clothing which was distributed to 6177 children.

AT THE HEART of Platt Bridge stands Platt B r i d g e Community Zone, a business and entreprise centre for the community.

Established in 1999, the zone is a social and business ‘hub’, housing eight businesses as well as providing a venue for local community groups.

The three storey building, on Ribble Road Platt Bridge, includes 14 Business Units, two of which are vacant, Business Incubator Units, for people starting their own businesses, two Business Support facilities for meetings and training, and a Conference and Activity Suite.

Meetings and training events are held regularly at the centre, providing help and support for local companies.

Home to eight businesses the zone is a hive of activity.

Based in the zone is Community Interest Company (CIC), Your Care Team CIC, who offers a less intensive care service designed to help independent individuals stay in the comfort of their own home. The company, who currently has 25 volunteers to its name, aims to assist vulnerable, older people who need immediate support to achieve independence, quality of life, well being and social inclusion and seeks to tackle the loneliness and isolation of older people.

Meetings

Peer group, No Secrets also uses the centre as a venue for their meeting nights. The group, who meet every Wednesday from 6pm-8pm at the centre, offers support to anybody over the age of 16 who is affected by selfinjury. Starting back in 2007, in St. Helens, No Secrets now has five groups based in St. Helens, Platt Bridge, Warrington, Halton and Knowsley, and have trained more than 900 professionals in awareness-level training on self injury.

Dedicated to providing services and advocating for people with disabilities, More Than Words Advocacy CIC is also housed in the Platt Bridge Community Zone.

THERE was a very heavy fall of snow as members of Wigan Thistle Society gathered to celebrate the Annual Burns’ Night at the Rose Centre in Lowton, on Friday 25th January.

Despite the weather conditions nearly everyone managed to get there. The guests were piped in, then after the “Welcome” and traditional Grace, friends sat together around beautifully decorated tables, and a lovely hot cock-a-leekie soup was served.

The piper, Stephen Plumb, led the Haggis Bearer, Stewart Mackay, to the top table where the “Address to the Haggis” was given by Jim McMillan. There was happy chatter as all enjoyed the rest of the meal.

The speeches were made later in the evening, and the “Immortal Memory”, slightly different with recitations from Burns’ poems was given by Donald McQueen with his wife, Eve, filling in the back ground to each poem.

Dancing continued till 11.15pm when everyone, came onto the floor for “Auld Lang Syne”. It had been a happy evening, but unfortunately it took some several hours for members to get back home. At least all arrived home safely!

During previous Healing S`ervices, in October 2011 and April 2012, at the church a notable success and answer to prayer was a young man who suffered from muscular dystrophy, and who is no longer in a wheelchair and is working for himself.

The Healing Service will be led by Peter Ashburner and his colleagues.

St. Andrew’s coffee morning success

ST. ANDREW’S church Springfield will be holding another coffee morning in aid of Myasthenia Gravis Association in February.

The breakfast morning will take place in St. Andrew’s Parish Centre, 120 Woodhouse Lane, Springfield on February 22nd from 10am-12noon.

Different kinds of cards, toast, cheese & ham toasties, toasted teacakes, jam, scones, cakes and biscuits, will be sold during the coffee morning, along with a chocolate tombola and a raffle.

Hand-crafted cards, made by the parishioners, will also be on sale during the morning.

A cleaning hamper and a meal voucher for the Raj Restaurant in Woodhouse Lane, Springfield, are some of the prizes up for grabs on the raffle.

All funds from the coffee morning will go to Myasthenia Gravis

Association. Myasthenia Gravis is a disease which appears to the sufferer to weaken the muscles. It is a disorder of the junction between the nerve and the muscle, caused by the body’s immune system attacking a vital part of this junction.

The last coffee morning organised by St. Andrew’s was in aid of

the Samaritans, who were greatly impressed with the charity work St. Andrew’s parishoners do. The coffee morning raised £105.05this was a fantastic effort considering the bad weather.

THE THREE Towns Operatic Society welcome the return of Barbara Mayers and Ken Rees in their f o r t h c o m i n g production.

The society will be performing of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Yeomen of the Guard at St. Joseph’s from May 7th-11th. Auditions have been held and they will be starring along with many of the talented Three Towns principals.

Barbara is excited at the opportunity to play the role of Dame Carruthers, Housekeeper to the Tower of London who sees the comings and goings of the Yeomen and all held in the tower.

Looking forward to treading the boards once again with the Three Towns, Barbara has performed with the society for many years and is renowned for

her character acting.

Ken will play the part of Sergeant Meryll of the Yeomen of the Guard. Previously he has played the roles of the Pirate King in The Pirates of Penzance; Dr Daly, the vicar in The Sorcerer; and Giuseppe Palmieri in The Gondoliers with the society.

Other parts cast were David Kay as Jack Point, Victoria Goulden as Elsie Maynard, Tony Meehan as Wilfred Shadbolt, David Griffiths as Fairfax, Bryony Colonel Wilmington as Pheobe Meryll, David Reeves as Sir Richard Cholmondley, Kerry Casey as Kate, Edward Magenty as First Yeoman, Mel Bailey as Second Yeoman, Bill Dutton as First Citizen, Rob McGee as Second Citizen and Bob Britton as the Priest.

Directly benefitting our Borough is the news that a major depot will create skilled engineering jobs north of Lowton where the HS2 line will then join the existing West Coast Main Line (WCML) south of Bamfurlong.

Network Rail confirms that the recent upgrade to the WCML delivered significant new capacity, but there is little scope for further capacity enhancement and with passenger demand set to grow by up to 61% between London and Manchester by 2024, only a new line can fill the gap.

The Government should bring forward legislation for the entire HS2 route in one bill during this parliament, rather than attempt to introduce a hybrid bill covering only the first phase of the line from London to Birmingham. I will continue to argue for a single piece of legislation to give certainty to the whole scheme and enable construction to begin in the north as well as in London.

HS2 serving Manchester

Airport is good news but the Government is making a serious mistake in abandoning plans to connect to Heathrow, the UK’s hub airport.

An Exceptional Hardship Scheme (EHS) has been established for those who own properties which may be affected by the proposed route. The Government maintain that those who meet the eligibility criteria can their property have by the purchased Government at open market value, without any adverse effect arising from HS2. I will be carefully studying this given the impact that the proposed route will have on a small number of my Makerfield constituents.

I also hope that the Government will listen to the genuine concerns of residents affected by the route and have an open mind on alternative routes that will come forward during the consultation process.

STANDISH Unity Club is playing host to its annual Real Ale Festival from March 14th to March 16th at the club in the Standish Centre on Cross Street.

This will be the third time the event has been held.

The Unity Club’s management team first put a real ale festival together in 2011, to promote more interest in the quality of cask ales served in the club - a strategy which clearly worked!

Twelve different brews from Cumbria will feature at this year’s Festival, and will include ales from Jennings, Dent, and other Cumbrian micro breweries.

Young Wiganers set sail

YOUNG PEOPLE from Wigan set sail on a Tall Ships adventure of a lifetime

And that’s exactly what one group of young people from Wigan are doing after to ‘throwing off the bowlines’and ‘catching the trade wind in their sails’.

The 11-strong crew, who are all members of the Wigan Council-backed B.yoU group, have swapped their home comforts for the high seas to take the Tall Ships Challenge.

The trip has been organised by the Tall Ships Youth Trust , one of the oldest sail training organisations in the UK. Setting sail from Portsmouth on a 72ft world class racing yacht over the weekend, the Wigan team will be exploring the waters of the South Coast during the five day voyage. On the way they’ll be learning all about the joys of a life on the ocean waves through a series of team-building, characterboosting and confidence raising tasks.

From climbing the spinnaker pole to scrubbing the decks, the young people all aged between 15 and 19 will be doing it all.

What makes the trip an extra special one is that the Wigan group will be making their own piece of nautical history by becoming the first ever from the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender (LGBT) community to take the challenge.

Setting sail to coincide with the national LGBT History Month celebrations, the team will be keep all us landlubbers abreast of their progress by a regular series of on-board blogs.

Wigan Council Youth Worker Vicky Perry, who will be joining the team on board, explains: “This is a wonderful opportunity for the young people to experience a real adventure. They are

sure to have a great time but this is no pleasure cruise. There will be plenty of early starts and they’ll be responsible for helping out on a working oceangoing ship.

“The experience will teach them new skills and how to work as part of a team but it will also teach them a lot about themselves.”

The expedition is one of six Tall Ships Challenges undertaken by young people from Wigan Borough, all of which have been sponsored by local businessman Martin Ainscough as part of the ongoing Wigan Youth Zone project.

Voyage

Phil Marsh who will co-ordinate youth work at the Wigan Youth Zone was on hand this week to watch the young people making their final preparations for the voyage.

“We’re delighted to be helping to make this dream come true for young people from our borough,” Phil said.

“For us the personal development side of this adventure is the key to it.

We believe the young people will come back from this trip with a host of new skills which they will be able to put to good use as members of the community.

“We also believe they will inspire other young people in our borough to go on and do great things with tales of their adventures.”

As part of the journey the team will run the Rainbow flag up the mast to recognise LGBT history month.

They’ll also be sporting some nifty deck wear in the form of specially designed hoodies that have been sponsored by Manchester-based radio station Gaydio.

Breakfast show presenter Chris Holliday came along to wave the young people off.

“The young people really are entering into the spirit of discovery,” said Chris.

“It’s really significant that they are the first LGBT group to do this. They really are blazing a trail for other to follow. What this says is there are no boundaries, there are no limitations.

With the right support you can do anything you want to. We’re proud to be sponsoring them and we’ll be keeping track of their progress on air.”

Opportunity

Wigan Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, Cllr Susan Loudon, is also wishing the group well.

“I think this is a wonderful opportunity for young people,” says Cllr Loudon. “I imagine that the experience will be one of fun, an adventure, and will be about taking on new challenges both mental and physical. However I am sure that the young people will remember this journey for the rest of their lives. Bon voyage! I look forward to reading their blogs.”

As for the young people, they were more than ready to set sail.

“I can’t wait!” said Dan, 19, “I want to be a youth worker so this will be great experience for me. I will be helping out and hopefully taking a leadership role with the group. It will give me some of the skills I need to pursue my career.”

Whilst James, 18, is looking forward to the more working it all out.

“I love puzzles and coming up with the solution to problems,” he says. “So the navigation and the map reading part will be really interesting. I am also really good with technology so I will be keeping everyone on shore up to date with our progress through our blogs. It is really fitting that that our journey falls within LGBT History Month because by being the first, we are making our own little bit of history.”

IT’S NO secret that the NHS is in turmoil as a result of the Government’s centrally driven reorganisation.

Hundreds of people have contacted me over the last year concerned that a combination of spending cuts, job losses and disruption caused by the NHS reforms will prevent them and their families from getting the care they need.

LOCAL people, helping local children- that’s the aim of local reading charity Beanstalk.

Beanstalk, formally Volunteer Reading Help, are looking for volunteers to help improve the reading skills of the Borough’s children.

Working with children on a one-to-one basis, the volunteers help pupils to improve their reading skills, increase their confidence and inspire lifelong love for reading.

The charity offers literary support for children aged 6-11, by providing two 90 minute visits per week to a school, helping pupils, one-to-one, with their reading, confidence and self esteem.

23 volunteers are currently providing help to more than 60 pupils in 20 schools across the Wigan Borough. But with a high demand for their help, the charity needs a further 16 volunteers to provide the service for the ten schools on their waiting list. If these volunteers come forward more than 120 children in the borough will reap the benefits.

One local school who is part of the scheme is Aspull Church Primary School and Head Teacher, Jenny Clarke is astounded by the pupils reading improvement.

“I’ve been so impressed with Beanstalk’s scheme,” she said, “reading results are impressive and their love for reading, self esteem and confidence has improved beyond all expectations.”

Shadow Children’s Minister and Wigan MP, Lisa Nandy visited Canon Sharples Primary School to see the charity’s work in action.

She said: “It was

inspiring to see local volunteers helping Wigan children develop reading skills and confidence.

Canon Sharples are leading the way with such an exciting scheme and it’s great news for the town.”

Brownsey, Fiona Deputy Head Teacher of St. Marie’s Catholic Primary School, in Standish, also praised the reading charity saying: “The Volunteer Reading Service is a great resource for schools.

Children who need extra support in reading, thoroughly enjoy the time they spend with an interested adult. They talk, play games, share books and generally encourage the development of language.”

Volunteers Fiona McMyler and Christine Wolsey says volunteering is very rewarding and it’s a joy to see the pupils progressing.

“The pupils become less tense and more confident, both in their reading and socially.

They look forward to our time together and are particularly eager to begin our session when they have discovered an author they have enjoyed before, or are reading a longer book in instalments.”

Emma Mitson, Volunteer Services Manager, is looking for more volunteers to help with the scheme.

Despite this there was good news for Wigan recently when official data from the Department of Health showed that Wigan, Wrightington and Leigh is one of the strongest performing areas in terms of health services.

The Trust, which runs hospital services across the Borough, was ranked number one in Greater Manchester and fifth highest in the North West.

Wigan’s A&E was ranked second out of the 24 A&E services in the North West, above neighbouring services like Bolton and Warrington.

The figures show that in Wigan patients are more likely to be seen quickly, less likely to acquire infections and less likely to be accommodated on

mixed sex wards which many patients find uncomfortable.

Despite this good news we still face significant challenges. Men in Wigan die, on average, 11 years earlier than men in the most affluent neighbourhoods.

Over the last year huge amounts of time and energy have gone into tackling illnesses that blight the lives of local people like cancer, heart disease and strokes.

And all of these challenges are set against a backdrop of major cuts, reorganisation, and job losses.

It is clear that we need a new vision for the NHS. That’s why Leigh MP and Shadow Health Secretary Andy Burnham has promised there would be no more reorganisation under a Labour Government. This would save billions of pounds - money that is currently being spent on bureaucracy and redundancy payments when it should be ploughed into our health services. It would also mean that the NHS could focus much more on preventing people from becoming ill, not just treating them afterwards.

By ensuring every last penny is spent on nurses, medicines and treatment we will make sure that Wigan achieves the best outcomes for patients, not despite the odds but because of them.

Wigan’s root to Green Deal funded work blossoms The Green Deal Consortia launched on Thursday February 14th by Energy and Climate Change Minister Greg Barker, as part of his official visit to Wigan Borough.

Praising the work of the Green Deal Consortia, Greg Barker called the work of its executive director Phyllis Prior-Boardman as pioneering.

Speaking about Green Deal, the Minister said that even though it was early days for the initiative, the consumer was already beginning to twig that something was happening, which will help drive down the cost of energy efficient home improvement.

The Minister urged that the Green Deal was not a stop/go programme but an initiative that will create a market framework that will run throughout the decade and beyond, allowing householders to improve their homes the way they want whilst also driving down running costs.

CK INSTALLATIONS’ Managing Director Stuart Cubby has more than twenty years’ experience in the construction industry.

El Banquete Godfather Part 2 at The Wayfarer

Gusty, brave and determined, Margaret opened her first bakery in 1847 and by 1903 had opened a further three shops.

Her pies have made it through three centuries and have flourished with time.

166 YEARS ago, an ordinary Wigan lady began to share her muchloved, secret recipe with Wiganers on a quiet corner of Lancashire.

The same recipe is now spreading across the North of England and is seen on the shelves of supermarkets, including Asda, Tesco and Morrisons. Her nameMargaret Poole. Her recipe- pies.

The building is almost like an optical illusion, looking at it from the outside you would never have guessed that a large, state-of-theart factory would be housed in the facility.

Walking into the factory is like walking into a different world, it seems so remote from the rest of society. It’s a hub of activity. are continuously Machines working noisily producing masses of wonderful delights, workers are

scurrying from one room to the next, overseeing the machines, cleaning the equipment and packaging the products. And it’s not surprising considering the factory makes 200,000 pies a day, equating to one million pies in a week!

Currently producing 20 lines of different pies and pastries Poole’s is fast becoming a national brand.

At the beginning of 2014, the factory will be making the most pies and pastries it has ever produced.

Margaret Poole’s determination is reflected in the certainly company’s Chief Executive, Neil Court-Johnson, who took over the business last April. His passion and enthusiasm has rubbed off on the Pemberton factory and its new lease of life has not gone unnoticed by the big supermarket brands.

Turning the heads of food stores, supermarket bosses are knocking on the factory door wanting to try the infamous Wigan pie.

In January, the pie company struck a deal with Tesco to make pies, sausage rolls and bakes for their Finest range. The factory has the capacity of producing up to 80,000 pies across five production lines.

With Poole’s Pies striking deals left, right and centre, the Wigan company is busier than ever.

“Our recent success is down to the management I have brought here from Holland’s pies. When I came Poole’s had a single customer in Morrisons. Poole’s Pies where only available in the North, but now we have expanded the distribution, you can buy Poole‘s Pies on the South Coast to right here in Wigan.”

The pie firm is not only giving Northerns what they want- golden, lightly crusted pastry filled with succulent meat- but it’s also boosting the local economy. Poole’s Pies is currently working with Wigan Council on an apprenticeship scheme.

Neil explained: “We are working with the council to promote apprenticeship schemes.

Some of workers have have been here a long time. One member of staff Pauline has been here for more than 50 years. The biggest challenge at the moment is to teach young people the skills that Pauline has learnt form working here for the past 50 years.”

It’s not just local people Neil is employing. Neil is keen to use locallysourced ingredients. He commented: “ It’s very important we use local suppliers. The company has been using the same suppliers for more than 20 years, whether it’s vegetables, cheese or meat, they are all sourced locally. We are working with the council and the National Farmers Union, to find the right raw materials to make our products.”

In a few months, it’s won’t just be northerns who will be enjoying Poole’s Pies. You will be able find Poole’s products in every corner of the country, from London to Edinburgh, Norwich to Carlise.

Operations Manager at the firm, David Rawstron (pictured left), joined Neil on the Poole’s Pies team last year and he praised Neil’s hard work for turning the Wigan business around. He said: “The sky is the limit

when Neil is concerned. He is very ambitious. It’s thanks to him that Poole’s is becoming a recognised national brand. He has attracted the big names to the company.

“Since joining Neil here it’s an exciting opportunity to develop and grow the brand, but it’s also a huge challenge, which I’m relishing.

“We’ve gone from being a small production output to a national brand, working with major retailers. Who knows where Poole’s Pies will be in the next few years.”

Poole’s Pies are also supporting this year’s Wigan Food and Drink Festival.

Neil believes it is important o inspire local people to take an interest in food.

Asked where the company would be in ten years time, Neil answered: “Poole’s will be a £100million business, whereas today it’s a £10m company. We would have reached our true potential by improving our availability, our pies won’t just be sold in the UK but all across the world.”

I’m sure that three centuries ago Margaret Poole would never have guessed that her pies would become a nationwide product, but thanks to Neil this is set to happen.

Built in the 1930s, Bottling Wood housing estate was the first council housing to be built in Wigan Borough.Now more than 80 years later the estate has expanded and changed beyond recognition.

One of the first residents to move into the council houses was Mrs Veronica Flynn.

Sharing her childhood memories living on Bottling Wood estate with the Wigan Courier, Mrs Flynn said that the area had changed since she lived there.

“I moved to Bottling Wood during the 1930s, there was a real sense of community spirit. Everyone knew everyone, and we all helped each other. I remember my mother looking after our neighbour’s children quite often, there was always a house full of people.”

Veronica moved into the newly-built council houses, on top of the hill on the edge of the Bottling Wood Dam, just before the start of the Second World War. Witnessing the Blitz in Liverpool from the top of the hill- the red sky lying on the city and the smoke ascending into the air-she said: “You could see for miles on top of the dam edge, I saw the bombs dropping on Liverpool, it was hard, but everyone just got on with it.

“The whole community got together and helped each other. We had an Anderson shelter at the bottom of our allotment where the whole estate would come.”

Rationing throughout the war is something that has never left Veronica.

“I still, to this day, never waste anything. It’s something that I grew up with and has never left me,” she said. “We didn’t have a lot when I was younger, but so did no one else, it was never a competition who had the most money.”

Being self-suatinable was a life lesson Veronica learnt at a very young age, her family grew their own vegetables. But Veronica drew the short straw.

“When a horse and cart came around the houses it was

my job to scoop the horse manure from the roads for our vegetable patch. I will never forget the times when my dad would shout Veronica get the shovel and my heart would sink!”

Although life was hard for Veronica when living on Bottling Wood estate, she still has very fond memories of her time there.

“ We used play games on our street, and we would always have a May Queen gala, I remember I used to dress up in my mother’s dresses and the lads would wear there father’s clothes.”

Time may have moved on, and the housing estate may have changed but Veronica’s memories of Bottling Wood will never change.

WIGAN CENTRAL Councillor George Davies has met with residents of Rosemary Crescent on the Bottling Wood estate to discuss new fencing.

The fencing will be put at the entrance of the woods.

Councillor Davies said: “I have requested a new fence from both sides of the steps which leads to the wood and the dam for the safety of all users. A meeting has been arranged from the Greenspaces area supervisor for the fence to be put in place.”

Housing stone to be restored

A STONE plaque which was laid in the first council house built in 1926 on the Bottling Wood estate, Whelley, by the then Wigan Corporation, is to be repainted.

Wigan Central Councillor George Davies, explains: “This stone is very special , as it commemorates the first of Wigan Councils Housing stock which is now around Wigan Borough. The stone is part of Wigan’s history.”

Cllr Davies has been in touch with our Wigan and

Leigh Housing for the stone to be repainted.

The plaque reads: County Borough of Wigan, this

stone was laid by the Mayor of Wigan Cllr John McCurdy JP in commemoration of the inauguration

of the first direct Labour housing scheme of the Corporation 6th October 1926 by Edwin Yates Chairman of the Housing Committee and William Vice Chairman of the Housing Committee.

THE LATEST Honda Civic is the ninth generation of a car that has sold more than 650,000 models in the UK since its launch back in 1973.

It rivals the Ford Focus and VW Golf, and gets an evolutionary look that rounds off the edges of its predecessor’s radical shape. Buyers can choose from four engines - two petrols and two diesels – along with four trim levels - SE, ES, EX and flagship EX GT. Cars with manual gearboxes come fitted with a stop-start system – which shuts down the engine in traffic to save fuel – while all come with an ECON button that adjusts throttle response and the air conditioning to improve fuel economy. The Civic is currently only available as a five-door model (there is no three-door this time), but a more practical estate version will join the line-up in early 2014 and a Type-R performance hot hatch is expected towards the end of the 2015.

Styling

The previous-generation Honda Civic had a revolutionary look, but Honda has chosen evolution for this latest model. The emphasis has been on improving aerodynamics, so changes include a smoother, sleeker shape with curvy wheelarches and longer front and rear overhangs.

LED lights run across the front (they're standard across the range), the tail retains the split screen of its predecessor – with the lights incorporated into the split – while a windscreen wiper has been added.

Inside, material quality of the dash and switchgear has been improved and the digital dashboard simplified so that it's easier to read. The overall quality is higher than that of, say, a Ford Focus or Kia Cee'd but the cloth seats look cheap and dated, and the dash layout is flawed depending on your seeting position the steering wheel blocks the speedometer and the various screens still reflect in the windscreen at night.

Driving You’ll get a good balance between fun and comfort in the Honda Civic. Thanks to new fluid-filled rear suspension bushes, it's

almost as good as a Volkswagen Golf at soaking up bumps, while the new electric power steering system is smooth.

It doesn’t have much feedback, though, and the weighting is very inconsistent so a Focus is still more involving.

Thanks to its slippery aerodynamics the Civic doesn’t suffer from wind noise, so it’s pretty quiet on the motorway. As for engines, the choices are a 99bhp 1.4-litre petrol, a 140bhp 1.8-litre petrol, a 118bhp 1.6-litre diesel and a 148bhp 2.2-litre diesel.

The 1.6 diesel is by far the best all-rounder, as it offers smooth acceleration and good economy, too. The 1.8-litre petrol needs lots of revs to perform at its best, at which point it can become quite noisy. The ride is considerably better than on the previous model, but it does still crashes over bumps and potholes.

Reliability If you’re looking for a car that won’t see the dealer any more than it has to, buy a Civic. The previousgeneration car has always performed well in the Driver Power survey and, thanks to lots of carry-over technology, we fully expect the new car to do just the same. Plus, Honda finished a very impressive sixth as a brand in the 2012 results.

As for safety, the Civic has a maximum five-star Euro NCAP rating, comes with plenty of airbags and LED daytime running lights as standard. In fact all cars are well equipped – entry-level SE and ES models come with alloy wheels, climate control with options including Bluetooth and sat-nav for an extra £995.

Further up the range, the EX and EX GT models are available with adaptive cruise control and a lowspeed collision mitigation system.

Practicality Honda knows how to make the most of the space inside a car - just take the excellent Jazz supermini as an example. And the new Civic carries over some Jazz-style technology from its predecessor, with a centrally mounted fuel tank that frees up space. It also has a clever ‘Magic Seat’ rear bench, which can fold flat or flip-up like in a cinema seat. Together with compact torsion beam rear suspension, there’s decent room for adults in the back, but headroom is tight for taller passengers. The boot offers 487 litres of luggage capacity, which is a massive 171 litres more than a Focus but 101 litres less than the new Skoda Octavia. It even has a twinheight floor. The main reason for this is that the Civic doesn't carry a spare wheel. Sadly, while thin front pillars make forward visibility good, chunky rear pillars mean reversing is

AT first glance you might think £20 is a bit much for a picture book - but these are no ordinary pictures.

Taken by some of the very best British press photographers, this is a photographic essay from the top drawer, courtesy the archives of that once great institution the Daily Mirror.

The book’s author is sports writer Neil Palmer, with a foreword by former England, Lions and Barbarians prop Mike Burton. It covers individual legends of the Union game, the great international teams of time past, the southern hemisphere visitors, the legendary Lions tours, in fact, it is the rugby union equivalent of an airport pot boiler - simply impossible to put down.

When you scan pictures of international teams from the 50s and 60s, you are immediately confronted with the truth that the game has most definitely moved on.

Today’s players are muscle-bound pumped-up monsters who crash and clatter into each other with little in the way of finesse, causing shocking long term physical damage.

The images from the misty days of forty and fifty years ago show you a different kind of player, men who used their brains as well as their brawn to outsmart opposition, men who played on unplayable pitches that left them looking like the ghosts of the goo wars, men who played without the relentless march of multi-subs onto the quivering pitch, who spent the match bleeding with no respite from a ‘blood bin,’ men who were not averse to drinking the odd bottle of perfume....

And don’t let’s forget the brutality of the game in those days - players indulging themselves in activity that, given the now ever-intrusive TV cameras, would these days see them banned for life and giving John Inverdale and Claire Balding a heart attack.

You messed with the Pontypool front row, with Colin Meades, Fran Cotton, Roger Uttley JPR and the rest of them at your considerable peril. Retribution was swift and final, and well-organised, as you can see in the pictures of the inevitable dust-ups, on a team-wide scale.

The term ‘legend’ is sometimes used too casually these days......Phil Bennett, David Duckham, Jim Renwick, Gordon Brown, Gareth Edwards, Jonah Lomu,Tony O’Reilly, David Campese, Phillipe Sella - legends, surely....

Wigan Warriors from the Inside Out...

PAUL FINCH on the mixed bag of results for the Warriors

Two of the questions posed by fans before Wigan’s season began were: a) Is the team good enough man for man (bearing in mind that in Brett Finch, Tommy Leuluai, George Carmont, Jeff Lima, Gareth Hock, Amos Roberts and Stuart Fielden they lost an awful lot of talent and experience in one fell swoop at the end of 2012)?

And …b) Is the youthful forward pack going to be able to build a platform from which new boys Blake Green and Matty Smith can direct the backs around the field?

Well, three matches into the season and the jury is still probably out in both cases. It was no surprise that Wigan demolished Salford by 0-42 on February 1.The City Reds went through an horrendous close-season, for a significant part of which they didn’t even know if they were going to have a team in 2013. But then came two games for the Cherry and Whites which

would never be anything less than extremely testing.

Warrington at home on February 8 would have been a major challenge for anyone, but especially Wigan.

The Wolves have had something of an Indian sign over the Warriors for several years now. Wigan haven’t defeated them since winning 44-24 in the Challenge Cup in July 2011, and haven’t beaten them in the league since a famous 20-22 outcome in February 2010, only Michael Maguire’s third game in charge of the Cherry and Whites.

The 17-17 draw at the DW on February 8 this year was quite a remarkable event, not least because fans of both sets of fans left the stadium feeling satisfied. Noone considered that they had watched a bad match, or that they had been robbed or that their players had not given every ounce of energy they had.

Wigan fans might have been more peeved as they’d been leading by one point until the 76th minute, when Lee Briers lofted over a lengthy drop-goal to tie the spoils. And yet, as evidenced by many discussions I ear-wigged on the way home, most of the Cherry and White horde were just glad – not to say delighted – that their young pack had proved they could mix it with the meanest and fiercest bunch in Super League.

Prior to this, there had been much talk about the Wigan kids being bullied by the likes of Warrington, who, boasting guys like Adrian Morley, Gareth Carvell, Trent Waterhouse and Ben Westwood, are a real mean machine. In the event, this wasn’t what happened at all. It wouldn’t be truthful to say that the opposite occurred, but both packs trooped off after the game with neither looking any more battered and bruised than the other.

Alas, doubt and uncertainty was restored a week

later, when Wigan travelled to Huddersfield, another team boasting a pack of behemoths, and succumbed to a 22-10 beating.

It needs to be said straight away that Wigan didn’t play badly. They scored two great tries, Josh Charnley’s on the 10th minute a 50-yard scorcher. But despite the best efforts of Lee Mossop, who was a rampaging bull whenever he was on the field, this time their forwards came up against a solid wall of defence, which completely flummoxed them (though to be fair, the young Wigan pack gained a lot of ground for their team, and defeat in the second half owed more to a general lack of enterprise from their play-makers rather than any lack of effort in the steam-house).

There were also a couple of mitigating factors in Wigan’s favour.

Sam Tomkins was a late withdrawal with shoulder trouble – that is the kind of blow that no team would recover from easily, let alone a very young team. In addition, the final scoreline was lopsided, and the result of a last-second interception by Huddersfield’s Brett Ferres. If it hadn’t been for that, the result would have been 14-10 to the Giants, which in my opinion would have been a fair reflection of the game.

Huddersfield would just have shaded it, though even then the better team would still have won – the Giants were most impressive during a prolonged siege on their own line in the last few minutes.

Overall, I’m not hugely despondent at this stage of the season. Wigan have won one, drawn one and lost one. Okay, that’s not the kind of strike-rate that would bowl you over. But at no stage have they been embarrassed, and it has to be reiterated that in playing

first Warrington and then Huddersfield, they came up against two of the toughest packs in the competition in two consecutive weeks. This is Super League of course, and if you want to win it convincingly, you’ve got to beat them all. But the British game is undergoing a drastic transformation.

From now on, the big money in the NRL is going to prevent the regular acquisition of Australian talent. It’s not inconceivable that, now and then, an Aussie star will come over and sign for a British club, but that will probably be in exceptional circumstances (such as those that brought Finch, Lima and Hoffman to these shores), and even the mid-range Aussie players are more likely to stay at home. By the same token, unless the RFL takes drastic action with regard to the Salary Cap, Rugby Union will continue to prey on our top stars (they won’t get all of them, but they only need to get a few to have a massive impact on certain clubs and on the England squad).

In the future, British RL fans are going to have to get used to seeing home-grown talent being ushered through en masse, and will likely experience fallow periods while these youngsters come of age.

Could it be that Wigan are currently on the leading edge of this revolution? It’s difficult to say, but this season will give us a good indication.

This pulsating contest proved a tense affair for those with affiliation to either side as play switched from end to end.

Wigan took the initiative from the start, excellent ball retention enabling the home side to take play to the Glossop line where Martin Gambles muscled his way over from close range, Andy Whittle adding the conversion. With Danny Hornby prominent, Wigan continued to press and would have extended their lead but for handling errors.

Glossop rallied to dominate the second quarter but were kept at bay by determined defence. The offensive continued after the break with Glossop reducing the arrears to a point from two penalties.

Tom Wilson was cynically tackled without the ball preventing a certain to touch down after chasing a hacked on ball . The referee despatched the transgressor to the sin bin and taking full advantage Wigan added 10 points from an Andy Whittle penalty and from the restart a break by Mike Jones carried on

by Mike Rigby put Connor Matthews away, the centre offloading to Martin Gambles whose touchdown gave Whittle an easy conversion.

Penalties were exchanged and Wigan appeared secure at 20-9 until from a last minute break out Glossop

scored a converted try to claim a losing bonus point.

Crewe and Nantwich 23 Orrell 6 Orrell playing their first game in 5 weeks started well but although they got close to the oppositions line Crewe & Nantwich were able to clear down field.

The opening score came from a kick from Crewe & Nantwich, a fortunate bounce and a slip by an Orrell defender allowed the home side to touch down for an unconverted try with to further penalties affording Crewe and Nantwich an 11-0 lead at half time.

After the break Orrell again started well and twice took the ball into their opponents half where two penalties from Chris Owen brought his side to within a score.

Crewe and Nantwich hit back and from a break from within their own half crossed for a second.

The referee yellow carded a Crewe & Nantwich player with 10 minutes remaining but Orrell were unable to take advantage of the extra man and just before the final whistle the home side chipped through to touch down for a converted try.

Leigh 31 Rochdale 10 Leigh move into 8th place in North One West following a bonus try 31-10 win at home to Rochdale.

Leigh took the early lead, Ian Wood claiming the touchdown from a catch and drive five metres out .

Calvin Cromprton brought up the second, the No8 standing out from the line out to take advanatge of a ball tipped off the tail, Elliott Ryan adding the conversion.

Rochdale came back with a penalty and just before the break closed the gap to two points with a converted try.

Leigh dominated the second period. From a ‘steal’ in the line out by Crompton, Anthony Bentham side stepped his way through under the posts. Ryan added the extras and it was Bentham again this time setting up Ross Shepherd with a cross kick, the winger collecting it on the full before drawing the full back to put Adam Dyson in for the bonus point, Ryan again successful with the conversion.

Newcomer Jermaine Allen made it five, the winger racing in from 70 metres out to cross in the corner.

Tarleton 2nd 22 Aspull 7 A devasting twenty minute spell midway through the first half in which the home side crossed for four tries and a conversion to take a 22-0 lead ended any chance Aspull had of taking this game.

However in a better second half display Aspull managed to get man of the match Andy Haire over for a try converted by Steve Bailey.

I’m a big fan of Roberto Martinez. He’s a perfectionist, a manager of principle who believes in playing football the right way.

I admire how he left a high-flying Swansea side in 2009 to take over from Steve Bruce, and I respect the way he’s turned down the likes of Liverpool and Aston Villa to stay here at Wigan.

His tactical wisdom is up there with the best, and it arguably saved us from relegation last season; converting Boyce and Figueroa to wing-backs paid dividends for the last few fixtures as we won crucial games against Arsenal and Man Utd. However, like any football fan, I can sometimes get frustrated. When the Latics are one or two goals behind in a game, it annoys me to see the defenders passing the ball about amongst themselves. It irritates me when we seem to take one step forwards and then three steps backwards, Of course, this is the way the players have been taught to play; to build up momentum from the back. Nevertheless, surely there must be a compromise? I’m not a tactical genius, but could we not just pump the ball into the box sometimes and see what happens? Teams like Stoke have built their success around a long-ball

gave England a warm welcome.

In game one England beat hosts Lithuania 4-3, in a nail biting match, going into game 2 it was winner takes all against Cyprus and England managed to hold on to a 2-1 victory.

Futsal is 5 a side form of football, played indoors with a smaller, harder ball than 11-a-side football, the action is fast paced. Whilst Wigan doesn’t have its own club (yet!), the north west boasts two National League Futsal sides in Manchester and Liverpool.

A PIONEERING project that uses the power of sport to get young people from Wigan and Leigh active, motivated and ready for work, has got off to a flying start.

Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT) has been chosen as the first organisation in the North West to deliver Get On Track, a scheme created by legendary athlete and double Olympic Gold Medallist, Dame Kelly Holmes. The programme started on Tuesday January 29 at Robin Park Arena, and what a difference it is making.

Get On Track has been specially tailored for Wigan Borough by WLCT’s Sports Development Unit and is designed to inspire and build aspirations in young people aged between 16 and 25 who are not in education, employment or training.

WLCT’s Sports Development Manager Lynsey Johnson explains: “It is an eight week personal development programme that gives young people an introduction to community sport, volunteering and inspires them to believe in themselves and improve their career opportunities. It will also support them into committing to an active and healthy lifestyle.”

Over the eight weeks, the young people will take part in a series of workshops aimed at building their confidence, self-esteem as well as improving their motivational and team-building skills. They will take part in a range of community sports events and even gain a valuable insight into the world of work through on-the-job experience.

One highlight of the course will see them developing and running their own community sports event for 50 young people on Wednesday February 20.

game, and whilst I don’t want Mr Martinez to abandon his elegant passing style, it would be nice to see some more goals; even if the lads have to hoof it upfield a bit more.

An example of our failure to outscore the opposition was the game against Stoke on the 29th. The Britannia started rocking when Shawcross put the home side ahead midway in the first half with a cleanly taken volley. The score was doubled by the lanky Peter Crouch three minutes after halftime, with a shot from the edge of the area that curled its way past the stranded Ali Al Habsi. The Latics fought back through debutant Roger Espinoza, who threaded a killer pass through to McArthur who finished it skilfully with the outside of his boot to make it 2-1. Espinoza showed his class once again just 10 minutes later, setting up a volley for Di Santo that the Argentine deftly executed.

We clawed back a deserved point despite our shoddy defence, and attention turned to the must-win game against Southampton at the DW. Paul Scharner’s comeback match started perfectly for Wigan as they led going into the second half thanks to a 12 yard header from Gary Caldwell. Schnederlin almost pulled the Saints level in bizarre fashion, with his block from McCarthey’s clearance

rebounding towards goal before being tipped over superbly by Al Habsi.

However, the Latics resistance was broken in the 64th minute thanks to a Paul Lambert header. The visitors took the lead 20 minutes later, with Schnederlin finally getting his goal with a sleek side footed tap-in. Shaun Maloney had the last laugh though, scuffing the ball over the line seconds from the final whistle to the annoyance of the travelling Southampton fans. Another point in the bag, but it could have easily been three.

Ah, yes. Next up was the Chelsea match.

I’d usually write a lengthy paragraph on our performance, but on this occasion it could be summed up in just one word: shambolic. The game finished 4-1 and it was nothing more than we deserved.

On a lighter note, the FA Cup game against Huddersfield was a welcome distraction from the toils of league football. And what a match it was! It was a fantastic result, hopefully we can build on this win and turn our season around.

Moving on to our forthcoming fixtures, we face both Liverpool and Man City within our next three games. Yes, we may get frustrated but the crucial factor is our determination; we never give in without a fight.

HAVE YOU ever pulled on the Royal and Navy Blue Hoops of Aspull rugby union club?

No matter what level or to what to age you may have played, the Woodshaw park club is inviting you to a special reunion on Saturday 30th March when the first team play their big game against league leaders Burnley.

Aspull’s Christian Walsh told the Courier: “The idea is to get everyone together. It’s a real chance to see some familiar faces and catch up on where life has taken you....”

“On field entertainment will be provided by both senior teams being in action that day, with the 1st XV playing Burnley and the Vets XV Playing Thornton Cleveleys.”

WIGAN ROBIN Park claimed the bragging rights and three points when they “did the double” over St Helens Town last week.

The 4-1 victory on a heavy Edge Green Street pitch was the least the Robins deserved as they controlled the game from the first whistle to the last.

They were ahead after just seven minutes when Phil Howard finished off a neat move by blasting the ball past Lee Novak in the Town nets.

This signalled wave upon wave of Robins’ pressure as Andy Neafcy and Colin Quirk sprayed the ball around the pitch and down the notorious Edge Green slope.

On 15 minutes they should have doubled the score after debutant Chris Bennett beat two men on the right-hand side before crossing to Howard who

brought a good save out of Novak.

The ball however fell at the feet of James Edgar but the youngster put the ball the wrong side of the post with the whole net gaping.

Five minutes later with their first real attack of the match Town launched a high ball into the area.

Ian Rowlands went to head clear but unbalanced he handled leaving the referee Rob Goodwin-Davey no option but to point to the spot.

Ex-Robin Shaun Judge stepped up to send Jay Foulds the wrong way and equal the score.

The setback didn’t affect Park as moments later Quirk put Howard through with a delightful arc’ed pass but with just the keeper to beat he fluffed his shot putting the ball wide of the post.

With Edgar and Bennett causing problems out wide it was only a matter of time before the Robins were back in front and on 35 minutes Howard beat the offside trap, drew the keeper and pulled the ball back for Joe Hull to fire home.

Five minutes later it was 3-1 as Howard proved too strong for Town defender Chris Williams, brushing him aside to finish with aplomb.

WIGAN Sports Club is celebrating a major boost having secured Olympic Legacy funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund.

Sport England have revealed that more than 1,000 local sports projects across the country have now received National Lottery funding through Inspired Facilities, which is part of the £150million Places People Play legacy programme.

Every sports facility that receives funding will carry the London 2012 Inspire mark – celebrating the links to the Games.

Wigan Sports Club has secured an award of £50,000 for urgent refurbishment of the Club’s changing room facilities, which are used extensively by numerous Hockey, Cricket and Squash teams at junior and senior level – as well as many others using the Club’s full-size Astroturf pitch. The Sports Club is also contributing over £30,000 to the project.

Sport England’s Chair, Richard Lewis, said: “This National Lottery investment is helping us deliver a lasting sporting legacy in Greater Manchester from last year’s successful Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“With so many clubs in the North West having benefitted from this fund already and building on the success of last summer, this is the legacy people want for their local community.”

Club President Tony Littler said: “We are absolutely delighted to have secured Sport England’s support for this crucial investment in our facilities. The club operates around twenty teams across a range of sports; our facilities are also used by district and county sides and many community groups. We are an entirely notfor-profit community club and this investment is crucial so we can provide proper facilities for the local community. We want those facilities to be used to the maximum and can assure everyone a warm welcome whether they are the youngest novice or an experienced county-level player.”

Wigan Sports Club is one of 310 projects across the England to receive lottery investment from the third round of the Inspired Facilities fund and one of over 1,000 to benefit overall, with the milestone being achieved one year ahead of schedule.

On the stroke of half-time the game was effectively over as a contest when Rowlands was fouled in the box.

Howard stepped up to complete his hat-trick and put the game to bed.

There were no further goals in the second-half but Wigan only have themselves to blame for that.

Howard missed a penalty, electing to place the ball rather than blast it with Novak guessing correctly and saving well.

Edgar went close with a shot from 12 yards and Quirk showed quick feet to bamboozle four defenders before

somehow putting the ball over the bar from six yards.

The three-goal cushion allowed boss John Neafcy to make changes in personnel and positions and the Robins comfortably saw the game out with just a Mark Pye effort - that was saved by Foulds - being the home side’s sole attempt on goal.

At the other end substitute Mike Case caused havoc on the right wing while veteran another substitute Brian Hatton came on for a cameo role at centre-half against the St Helens club that he represented for many years.
