Charity ball raises more than £25,000!

THE Wigan Youth Zone received a massive financial boost of more than £25,000 thanks to a Charity Ball.

Guests sparkled with glitter at the "Everything that Glitters" Inaugural Charity Ball in support of Wigan Youth Zone, raising a total of £28,642.

Organised by Volunteer and WYZ Board member Julie Cheetham and hosted by former BBC Broadcaster, Norman Prince, the evening was a huge success with 280 guests attending.

Wigan archaeology findings

By Hannah Smith M Y S T E R Y surrounds the gardens of former Rectory, Wigan Hall and Wigan Archaeology Society are determined to get to the bottom of it - literally.

Located at the bottom of Hall Gate, in the centre of Wigan, members have been trying to find archaeological remains in the surroundings of the Rectory.

The Rectory itself is a Grade 2 listed building owned by the Diocese of Liverpool, who have put the site on the market for redevelopment.

Members of the group found a deep trench whilst cutting through a dirt track, thought to be the original route of Frog Lane dating to the 18th century. Unable to reach

the bottom of it, its purpose remained unknown, until now.

After leaving the trench for a year, members have returned to solve the mystery and having expanded the area, they have discovered another ditch, thought to date back to the 17th/18th century.

Discovering a layer of black sedimentary material, whilst digging,

it suggests the ditch was once filled with water.

Secretary of the Wigan Archaeology Society, Bill Aldrige, said: " At the moment we haven’t quite reached the bottom of the ditch but discovering the a layer of blackish sedimentary material it suggests we could have found the moat that once stood there.

"There has been a

Matching the historical reports, have Wigan Archaeology Society found the moat that could lead to the remaining pieces of the puzzle being unearthed?

WIGAN & Leigh Hospice want to thank the 350 riders who took part in this year’s Manchester to Blackpool Bike ride on Sunday 8th July.

Despite unpleasant weather forecasts, the day was good, the atmosphere brilliant and the support for the Hospice outstanding.

The atmosphere began in Manchester and continued all along the route as can be seen from the pictures. There were many riders for other charities envious of the terrific medallions being provided exclusively for Wigan & Leigh Hospice riders.

The Hospice are rightly proud of the back-up support they provide for their riders, which not only includes medallions, but optional transport for riders and bikes to the start in Manchester and return from Blackpool. Over 200 Hospice riders took advantage of it.

back-up service with mobile Hospice Ambulances to help with puncture repair, replacement parts, replacement bikes and even personal transport for riders. All designed to make Hospice supporters secure in the knowledge that they were not alone.

Hospice chief Executive Alan Baron, who was dishing out drinks and sandwiches at one of the two Hospice ‘refreshment stops said, “What an outstanding day. We are proud of the service we provide, not only to our patients and families we support, but to those who support us.”

Alan concluded, “Not only was it a terrific atmosphere throughout, but we are looking forward to being able to use the sponsorship money that will be raised for the specialist care our patients need. Last year the ride raised over £50,000! So please support those who generously gave up their Sunday, not to mention all the many hours and days of training they undertook for us. We know how much some of our riders endured to help others.

Cervical screening awareness

LOCAL GPs at Wigan Borough CCG are reminding women in the region about the importance of having cervical screening (smear test).

The campaign, spearheaded by national charity Jo’s Trust, is aimed at all women who are eligible for screening, but particularly younger women aged 25 to 29, who are the least likely to respond to screening invitations.

Dr Tim Dalton, local GP and Chair of Wigan Borough Clinical Commissioning Group (WBCCG) said: “It’s vitally important that women keep their appointment for their smear test. This simple procedure saves 5,000 lives per year in the UK, yet more than 20% of women invited for screening do not attend.

“The test can detect any abnormalities or changes in the cervix which, if left untreated, could lead to cervical cancer. Having your cervical screening sample taken should only take a matter of minutes.

You can bring a relative or friend with you and you can request a female nurse or GP to take the sample.”

“Of the women tested, more than 90 per cent receive a normal test result, and those whose samples show abnormalities get the further test and treatment they need quickly. We want to do all we can to ensure that every single woman who received an invitation attends her appointment.

“If you have any symptoms which worry you, such as abnormal bleeding, pain or a discharge you should see your GP as soon as

possible, rather than wait for your next screening appointment.”

Every year in the UK, over 2,800 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer and nearly 1,000 women will die from the disease. After breast cancer, cervical cancer is

the second most common cancer in women aged 35 and under.

Since its launch over 20 years ago, the NHS Cervical Screening Programme has been highly successful, saving an estimated 5,000 lives every year.

Everybody enjoyed the party atmosphere, excellent food and good company which created a great deal of conversation and laughter.

Besides visiting speakers a number of outings have been arranged over the past months.

Towards the end of April we went by coach to Boundary Mill and after shopping followed by a fish and chip lunch we had a cruise along the canal. Fortunately the wet weather didn’t dampen our spirits and the day was enjoyed by one and all.

In May a number travelled to Liverpool and after enjoying lunch at the Adelphi we went to see ‘Sister Act’ at the Empire. Later another shopping trip was arranaged to Skipton. It was market day and so there were plenty of bargains to be found.

Our next outing, towards the end of June, will be to Cartmel and Grange-over-Sands with lunch at Graythwaite Manor Hotel.

Sir, I would like to invite your readers to help me raise awareness of an important new information website for parents which is very close to my heart.

The Brain Injury Hub provides comprehensive information and support to the parents and other family members of children who have suffered a brain injury. It’s been developed by the national charity The Children’s Trust, Tadworth.

My own experience of brain injury has been widely reported, but of course children can suffer brain injuries too – the causes include road accidents, falls, brain tumours and meningitis. A brain injury can leave a child with lifelong challenges, both physical and mental, and their parents will desperately need support and information. That hasn’t been widely available before, but now the Brain Injury Hub will be a vital resource for thousands of families across the UK. As a Vice-President of The Children’s Trust I have already seen the amazing work the charity does at its national rehabilitation centre for children with brain injuries. The Brain Injury Hub combines this clinical expertise with contributions from parents sharing their own stories and a forum where parents can talk about their own experiences.

Perhaps you know the parent of a child with a brain injury, maybe amongst your family or friends or at your child’s school. If you do, please tell them about the Brain Injury Hub. It could help the whole family overcome the serious challenges they may be facing.

Job Club Success

A new communitybased Work Club is helping unemployed people of Wigan to take the first steps towards getting back to work.

Based at Beech Hill and Sacred Heart Children’s Centre, the Work Club is training people to help them get back into the workplace and a number of clients have found paid work.

After providing help and advice for just a few months, Children’s Centre Co-ordinator, Julie Clarke and volunteer Advice Worker, Cath Williams are delighted with the success they’ve had in helping some of their regulars into

paid employment.

Julie said: “It is so rewarding to see someone who came into the centre feeling very negative about their chances of finding work in the current economic climate become full of hope and enthusiasm for going back to work.

"To then help them to achieve their objective and find paid work is fantastic.

We do not hand jobs out on a plate, so credit must go to our clients. Our role is to provide the tools to help people and it is through their own efforts and hard work that these results have been achieved.”

Interview with new councillor

Young, ambitious and eager to make an impression, newly-elected Orrell councillor Kelly Ready is keeping politics in her family.

At 23, Kelly is one of the youngest councillors in Wigan.

You'd think she would be fazed or daunted by the challenge but she's relishing it.

Elected in May to represent the Orrell ward, Kelly, standing for Labour, won with a majority of 144 votes and is already organising a library exchange centre and planning a new play area.

Kelly has followed in the footsteps of her father, Wigan Council's Champion for Housing, and Leisure Client/Communications, Councillor Chris Ready, but is keen to stand on her own two feet.

Kelly told the Courier: "It's great my dad can give me advice with his experience, but I want to be known for being an Orrell councillor and for the things I've achieved representing Orrell."

Politics is certainly in Kelly's blood: she studied politics at Winstanley College, and won a

degree in Peace Studies at Bradford University. She has a lot of knowledge about current affairs, but now she wants to change things.

"I've studied politics for a five years, I've spoken and discussed current issues but I feel

An active member of the Labour Party for eight years, Kelly has been the Membership Secretary and the Youth Representative, encouraging young people to join the party, and she is keen for young people to take an interest in politics locally.

Kelly wants to help young people find their voice and is setting up drop-in sessions in the schools of her ward.

New Scanner for Library

COUNCILLOR George Fairhurst recently contacted The Library Services in Wigan to have another scanner installed in the library on Cross Street, Standish.

As there was only one in the library it was causing a lot of queues due to the fact that people

Starting in September, drop-in sessions will take place at St. James' Catholic Primary School, Orrell Newfold Community Primary, Orrell Holgate Primary, St. Peter's Catholic High School and Winstanley College, for pupils to share their views.

Children and young people are close to Kelly's heart. She has been a trustee of local children and young people's bereavement charity, Me 2 You, for three years.

The charity for bereaved children, young people and their families helps them re-adjust to life after death of a loved one, or through loss with regards to separation.

She is employed as a Family Support Worker

Support Worker, it's a busy time for Kelly.

"I don't know what sleep is at the moment, I'm still trying to find my feet and organise my time. I'm not complaining though, I've always had a good work ethic. My dad has always worked hard and I grew to admire that."

So what's the future for Kelly?

"I'm taking it one day at a time and focusing on local issues, but one day, I may go into national Government, never say never!"

Kelly has certainly stepped up to her role as a councillor, and with plenty of years ahead of her in local and perhaps national politics, her future is definitely bright.

DR VENK MANI was appointed to the Wigan & Leigh Health Authority in August 1977 to develop a specialist Gastro-enterology unit.

Venk trained under well known international specilists at Manchester hospitals and Hope Hospital, where he gained extensive experience in fibre-optic endoscopy.

Venk was an early adopter of the new video-optic technology, which greatly improved the patient care provided.

The hospitals became a well known centre for inflammatory bowel diseases and Wigan & Leigh is acknowledged as a major centre for

bowel problems. Dr Mani set up a very active, nationally acclaimed patient group with regular meetings/seminars to improve care well being for patients with gastric conditions.

Since his retirement from the NHS, Venk is actively involved as a registered volunteer with the stroke association of UK assisting the education of patients and carers.

Venk leads Wigan Rotary Club’s annual 'Stroke Awareness' day, which is

held at a local supermarket and measures the blood pressure of shoppers to identify any potentially dangerous conditions.

Give an hour for Christies

‘THERE must be a number of people in the borough who are grateful for the work of Christies’ said Wigan Rotary President Venk Mani ‘ and we are organizing an event for them and their family and friends to give something in return’ he continued.

The Club is organising a Fun Run on Sunday 23rd September in Haigh Hall Country Park. The event over 5 kilometers, which is just over three miles, can either be run, jogged or walked, and should take about one hour to walk. It is a great way to have a little exercise in beautiful surroundings and at the same time raise some money for research into men’s cancers.

For the regular runners or those more adventurous there is also a 10K event on the same day, which is open to all.

‘Prostate cancer is now the biggest cancer killer in men’ explained Venk Mani ‘ one man dies every hour in the UK from this illness and over two thousand young men are affected by testicular cancer each year, in addition to those affected by penile cancer. But only about half the money that is spent on research into women’s cancers is spent on research into men’s cancers’.

All the profits from this Wigan Rotary Club event will be donated to the Men Matter Appeal who fund research into men’s cancers at The Christie Hospital.

Bernard Edmunds Chairman of the appeal said ‘ We are delighted that Wigan Rotary Club have decided to donate all the profits from this event to us. I would urge as many people as possible to get behind this event and help us to reduce the number of deaths from male cancers’.

The Wayfarers wins restaurant of the year award

DURING the Wigan food and drink festival which took place between March 1st and 11th The Wayfarers at Parbold asked customers if they would nominate them for the restaurant of the year awards.

Many did and they were shortlisted to receive a secret visit from the judges.

The judges allocated points for different areas of food, service, menus and environment and gave the restaurant the highest score with with particular commendations to 'The quality of the environment, quality of food and quality of customer attention'.

Rachel Birkett, Manageress said: "We are really pleased to win this award. Our family have been here for 15 years this year and have always served the best quality food possible. It has taken some time to settle into the new

kitchen and restaurant extension which was renovated 2 years ago and have since recruited an experienced chef from Manchester. This award is a true reflection on what he has done.

Gift for St. Johns Ambulance

A NEW gazebo and flag were presented to the Wigan Division of St. Johns Ambulance Service by Wigan Councillor George Davies.

The Galleries Award Winning Summer Beach is back for 2012!

From 30 July until 2 September, the FREE Summer Beach returns to Woodcock Square at The Galleries Shopping Centre, making it a great attraction during the school holidays.

At 11am on Monday 30 July, when the beach officially opens, shoppers young and old will be entertained with party music, games and the chance to climb the 8 meter high climbing wall in Atherton Square. With 10 tonnes of sand,

palm trees, deckchairs and decking, the beach will also play host to a number of activities on Wednesdays throughout the summer period including; donkey rides, punch and judy shows, get fit for summer classes, face painting, football, volleyball, limbo competitions, balloon modelling and children’s activity workshops.

Richard Paxton, centre director of The Galleries commented: “The Galleries Summer Beach is now in its 5th year and has proved to be extremely popular attracting over 40,000 visitors previously. Our award winning summer beach provides free family fun throughout the summer holidays. Visitors are able to have a break from their

shopping and relax on a deckchair, or even join in with one of the many events we have planned.”

“The Summer Beach started in 2008 when we wanted to put on a summer event which is suitable for the whole family. With Wigan being over 20 miles away from its nearest sandy beach (Southport), we thought that it would be great to have our very own beach right here in Woodcock Square.”

SHEVINGTON Methodist Church have received a £600 donation from the Duchy Of Lancaster Bursary Fund.

Leading the procession was Rector of St. Wilfrid’s Andrew Holliday, Curate of St. Wilfrid’s Gillian Watson, Rector of Standish Methodist Laurence Potter and the Priest of St. Marie’s RC Church Father John Hindley.

Congregation members from all Standish Churches, Scouts, Church play groups, Sunday Schools, Girl Guides, staff and pupils from St. Wilfrid’s Junior and Infant School and St. Wilfrid’s Church Lads’ and Church Girls’ Brigade all joined the walk.

Standish business on the move STANDISH Sports and Uniforms has moved again! This time to a bigger premises just next door.

The company which moved into its current location in The Standish Centre in Cross St says rapid growth has meant it needed to expand.

Owners Colette Oliver and Caeryn Collins put the growth down to its focus on customer service.

They said ‘ we are mums who have experienced the hassle of buying school uniform and feel it shouldn’t have to be that way.’

We have introduced a number of ways to make buying school uniform a simple and stress free experience’.

Customers can opt for a free home fitting, a shop appointment (available evenings or weekends) buying over the internet, ordering over the phone or of course calling in to the shop.

Customers can also make use of a lay away service or pay in instalments.

The new services have proved so popular that more local schools have opted to use Standish Sports and Uniform and

this has meant it was necessary to move into a larger premises.

SS and U continues to share space with the Magic Tree which now has a dedicated space for the dress agency and nursery exchange. They have a wide range of high quality pre loved nursery equipment from prams and buggies to jumperoos and baby baths! Seven trophies for Brigade WI at Cedar Farm

After the previous year's success, the band was forced to move up to a higher class and compete against older and more experienced musicians.

young band and to come back with seven trophies is excellent and we can now boast of having the best Drum Major in the country!”

Deborah, also a former sports-mad P.E. teacher spoke of her terrifying climbing accident in rock Snowdonia. She was taken by RAF helicopter to Bangor hospital.

It was discovered she had a broken neck and was consequently paralysed

from the shoulders down. Deborah was determined to live a normal life as possible and overcame many hurdles.

She spent the next 25 years teaching in primary schools. In 1984, she represented Great Britain in the paralympics games in Korea.

Today, she is happily married and with the help of 'assistant' dog she enjoys a full and happy life.

The WI's book and walking club continues to be well supported. This month's walk included a visit to Cedar Farm (pictured).

The next meeting will be on August 8th when Joan Hardwick will deliver a talk called Carnival Capers.

The proceeding started with an impressive warm up by the Shevington percussion group and an Olympic quiz.

Paul’s message was for each individual to strive to be the best, then the success of the team will follow. As with Olympic athletes he still has had to make sacrifices, turning down nights out with

friends, to put his training first. Some days he does not feel like training, but it is all worth it in the end.

This message was echoed by Jen Griffith, a long term student of Kumon who is now off to University to study dentistry. “My short bursts of daily maths study have really stood me in good stead as I progressed from having no confidence in maths at primary school to gaining A* at GCSE, and I have just completed my A level.

Kumon is the best thing I have ever done!’

PUPILS at St. Mary and St. John’s Primary School had a surprise at the presentation of the Jubilee plaque when fourteen year-old Ben Johnson turned up with the Olympic Torch.

Ben, a year 10 pupil at Deanery High School, carried the torch in the rely at Abram in Wigan on May 31st and answered questions from the pupils.

Ben, who was nominated by his mum, is an avid wrestler and started his love of the sport at just eight yearsold. He has also supported young disabled children in a sports camp during the summer holidays two years ago.

Ben hard work has not

stopped there, he has since completed the Manchester to Blackpool bike ride twice, raising money for Wigan and Leigh Hospice and CLIC a charity for children and young people with cancer. He had arranged to participate in a bike ride from Manchester

THE little ones at Shevington’s St. Bernadette’s Pre School have big ideas.

They are part of national road safety charity Brake’s bid to create the world’s biggest walking bus – a human chain which helps children to and from school aided by parents, teachers and high viz jackets.

Manager Denise Bradbury says it’s a serious part of their safeguarding duty. She said: “I feel strongly about this. We find many children simply aren’t used to walking because they get transferred around in cars.

So we use our road safety lessons to help them become familiar with pedestrian crossings and the dangers of traffic.”

All 22 children, carefully supervised by seven adults, were joined by a number of parents on their mini-expedition. It took place at exactly 10am, to tie in with ventures across the country.

The charity believes more than 120,000 school children took part. But the children at

Council road safety experts joined the walking bus as part of their work in many of the borough’s schools as the children get older and more independent.

The council’s cabinet lead for the environment, Cllr Kevin Anderson, said: “I applaud the work of St Bernadette’s, and all schools where walking buses are operating.

Although it is parents’ responsibility to get their child safely to and from school, it does take that little extra effort to organise walking buses. But the positive safety implications are well worth it.”

Denise adds that her pre-school is especially keen to work with the community.

“We offer flexible delivery for parents and see ourselves as part of the wider Shevington community – and that means we are proud that the safety of our little ones on the roads is taken seriously. And the children loved it too!”

Grammar School's Old Boys Dinner

WIGAN Grammar School's Old Boys Annual Dinner was held recently at Wigan Cricket Club.

Some 150 former pupils attended and enjoyed a convivial evening which featured an excellent four courser liberally washed down with plenty of

'memory prompter.'

The guest speaker was Alex Miller, Archivist at Wigan Archive Services, who spoke about the Wigan Grammar School records and documents which are held in the Wigan council archives.

Mr Gordon Unsworth presented a very well received valedictory tribute to OB Roy Knowles, who passed on in April this year.

Presiding over the dinner and trying manfully to keep order was

organiser Tony Littler, a job he executed with aplomb.

The Grammar School OBs are very happy to welcome former pupils to what has become a fixture in the Wigan calendar.

Should a mini always be a mini?

IF you thought a MINI should always be mini, then you’ll probably agree that a Fiat 500 should always be a tiny city car. But, families that want a MINI are catered for by the Countryman, and now the same families can opt for the Fiat 500L – a jacked-up MPV version of the 500.

It rides on a platform derived from the Fiat Punto and measures in at 4.14m in length – that’s around 59cm longer than the standard 500.

All that extra space means that five tall adults can fit inside, and with 400 litres of space there’s plenty of room for bags too.

difference in size between the 500 and 500L, Fiat has tried to keep the new MPV familiar. The twin round headlights are the most recognizable feature, mounted either side of the single bar grille. A few changes have been made for practicality’s sake however, such as the almost 360-degree glass that helps improve visibility.

With the bigger footprint and the more weighty construction comes a range of more powerful engines than the 500. The range kicks off with a 1.4litre petrol with 93bhp and tops out with a new version of the twocylinder TwinAir engine that now produces 104bhp, rather than 84bhp in the smaller 500.

We’re driving the sole diesel offering – a 1.3-litre Multijet engine with 84bhp –

and while the 0-62mph time of 14.9 seconds sounds slow, it actually suits the 500L around town. It does struggle on faster roads and if you can stretch to the TwinAir engine then that is far more characterful, much quicker and almost just as efficient. CO2 emissions for the two engines stand at 110g/km and 112g/km respectively.

The appeal of the Fiat 500 is that its compact footprint and light controls make it perfect for nipping around town. Pulling off the same trick in a car much heavier and much larger was always going to be difficult and Fiat hasn’t quite managed to pull it off. The controls are just as light but the 500L feels unwieldy and slow. On the plus side the great all-round visibility helps to find gaps in the traffic.

Outside of city limits and on to twisting back roads and the 500L can’t match up to the MINI Countryman.

The light steering that worked so well in town now feels short on feel and a little imprecise, while the soft-ride that does such a great job of smoothing out roads at low speeds, results in the car feeling a little wallowy in high speed corners.

But practicality is arguably the 500L’s forte and Fiat has worked hard to ensure it’s family-friendly.

The boot, for instance, is adjustable on three separate levels while the rear seats all slide back and forth, and fold down 60:40 too.

Owners will also have the ability to fold down the front passenger seat and there are 22 different storage spaces dotted throughout the car too.

And while the hard plastics covering the dashboard reveal the material quality isn’t as high as that in the Countryman, the fit and finish is particularly good and the chunky switchgear feels bulletproof.

In a segment normally dominated by models like the Citroen C3 Picasso, the Fiat 500L stands out because it boasts the kind of style that most small MPVs can only dream of. It’s also impressively comfortable, practical – and with an expected price-tag of £15,000 –

good value too, but it's by no means the best

The car will feature 16-inch alloys as standard, yet our Clio had optional 17-inch

dials, bisected by an elliptical horizontal panel with a digital speedo.

Buyers opting for Dynamique trim or higher will be able to choose from four interior colour schemes.

In our pictures, the dashboard, upper door trim and seat inserts are all finished in vibrant red. The good news is that this is a no-cost option.

The full engine range has yet to be confirmed, but will include the 1.2litre 16v turbo from the Megane.

A 900cc threecylinder engine will also be offered, and petrol engines will account for around 70 per cent of sales. A 90bhp 1.5-litre dCi diesel will make up the rest.

A five-speed manual gearbox will be standard, with stop-start on some models, and a dual-clutch auto should follow.

The target is best-inclass economy and emissions across the range, including at least one car with less than 90g/km of CO2.

Helping that will be an Eco function on some models. When used with cars featuring Renault’s R-Link multimedia system, this will allow owners to get

There will be no three-door model this time round and no estate for the UK, but the big news is the price. The MkIV Clio is expected to be similarly priced to the current model and rivals like the Peugeot 208.

Entry-level examples will start at a little over £11,000, with top-spec cars available for £16,000. Order books will open in October.

The new Clio is 3.5cm longer than its predecessor at 4.06 metres long, 45mm lower at 1.45m tall and 24mm wider at 1.73m.

That makes it 11.2cm longer, 5.6cm narrower and 3.3cm lower than a Ford Fiesta.

The car pictured here is a Dynamique model finished in Flame Red. Externally, the mid-spec version gets narrow chrome strip detailing on the front grille, lower door sections and hatchback lip. But as

ORRELL and Standish met in the Wigan 20/20 cricket league at Orrell on Friday evening June 29th.

Orrell batted first and scored 179 runs in their twenty overs.

BOROUGH has WIGAN established the first Healthy Stadia and Sports Clubs Network in the UK.

Commissioned and funded by Wigan Borough CCG, the initiative is to encourage and support other sports stadia and clubs across the Borough to become a healthier environment for their fans, staff, visitors and the local communities they serve.

More than 60 delegates, including many from professional and amateur sports clubs attended the first Wigan Borough Healthy Stadia and Sports Club Network Conference on 21st June at Leigh Sports Village.

The event focused on summarising the health challenges of Wigan Borough and identified how the new Healthy Stadia and Sports Club Network can support the Borough's clubs.

The conference also gave sports clubs the opportunity to recognise and develop their important contributions to the health of their communities.

The three year project will offer a support mechanism for the clubs in Wigan and will also work with other external organisations such as the NHS. Clubs will be supported in the development of action plans and partners from Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust and Wigan Borough CCG will offer advice and services to support the clubs.

Dr Kate Ardern Executive Director or Public Health for the Borough of Wigan said: "This innovative programme has the potential to have a very positive impact on the health and wellbeing of the whole Borough, and it is great to see Wigan taking a national lead."

GB Boccia team clean sweep in Wigan

GREAT BRITAIN’S Boccia team made a clean sweep of the trophies at the Cheshire International Boccia Championships at the weekend, taking first place in the three divisions of play at the event.

This event is a significant one in the international calendar and this year even more so, as part of the build-up to the London Paralympics. 12 international teams competed across 3 divisions of play: BC1/2 team; BC3 pairs and BC 4 pairs at Wigan’s Robin Park.

Teams travelled from all over Europe, and from Argentina and Canada, to attend. And in addition to the teams of England, Scotland and Wales, the Great Britain Paralympic squad took the opportunity to field a very strong line-up.

Organisers say that the competition was intense, with some very high quality performances as nations sent their Paralympic players. After the pool matches it soon became clear that GB would do well in all groups,

but faced a stiff challenge from Canada in the BC4 pairs. And so it proved, with the two teams meeting in the semi-final, taken by GB after a tie break. GB then faced Scotland in the final and in another close game ran out winners 3-2.

In the BC1/2 event, GB ran out comfortable winners, beating Ireland 7-1 in the final, after a tough semi against Argentina.

In the BC3 pairs event GB maintained a consistently strong performance throughout the weekend and beat Belgium convincingly in the final, 9-0.

Event organiser, Brian Allen, said: “I was delighted that the event went smoothly. It was pleasing that so many countries were involved and felt it worthwhile to attend. It’s now firmly established on the world Boccia calendar and I look forward to seeing more countries next year.”

The event, run by Boccia England, was held at Robin Park in Wigan, on 22/23 June. Now in its fifth year, the event is sponsored by the Cheshire

Building Society, part of the Nationwide group, and supported by Wigan Council and Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust.

Cllr Chris Ready, Wigan Council’s cabinet lead for leisure, presented several of the trophies. He said: “Wigan is proud to be a part of this amazing event. We have been host to the championships for several years now and I want to welcome and thank visiting athletes from across the

The event, organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust's Sports Development Unit, took place at Leigh Sports Village.

More than 200 disabled athletes aged 11-16 came to join in the activities from Wigan,

Rochdale, Bolton, Oldam, Tameside and Stockport.

Participants were able to compete in a variety of games, such as table tennis and sitting volleyball.

Everyone involved were encouraged by London 2012 Paralympic medal contenders, including, Thomas Young (swimming), Sophie Hancock (shot put) and Sean Clare (discus) .

Thomas Young, 21, from Staylbridge is hoping to achieve a medal in the 100m backstroke and 400m freestyle at the London Paralympics.

He said: "Days like today give young people a chance to take part in the spirit of the Paralympics and help with their athletic development."

Olympic torch bearers, including Cameron Foster, Danny Dowd, Andy Smith and Hazel Johnson also attended to show their support.

Organiser Jane Bent, from Wigan Leisure and Culture Trusts Sports Development Unit said: "This is the fourth year we've held the games and its a wonderful celebration of the talent we have across Greater Manchester" The day proved to be a success with Team Oldham triumphing overall.

The event supporters, Greater Manchester's Competition Manager Network and Wigan Disability Sports Forum, will be running a number of initiatives for disabled youngsters, including a series of multi-sports camps over the summer holidays.

Blackbrook Royals U 13s 18 Shevington Sharks 34 THOUGH THE match was riddled with missed opportunities Shevington had some outstanding tries.

After Blackbrook had opened the scoring Shevington quickly replied with the opening try from Phillip Bretherton, a try from Dmya Hanley, a barnstorming run from Robert Dandy to score his first try for the team and a typically strong run from Patrick McCarroll as he went over for the last try of the first half.

As the wind gusted only two tries were converted by Man of the Match Conor Sheehan Jones.

Blackbrook scoring first followed by a second try from Phillip Bretherton when Blackbrook dropped out and at full speed Phillip took the ball in front of a terrified Blackbrook winger to go over for the try.

This was again followed by the second superb long range try from Dmya and a second try from Robert which was converted by Conor Sheehan Jones.

WELL, the International Origin series of 2012 proved a costly adventure for Wigan.

With Tommy Leuluai suffering a broken leg in the first game of the series at Langtree Park, St Helens – an injury that is likely to rule him out for much of the rest of the season, if not all of it (the jury still seems to be out on that) – and now, apparently, wing sensation Josh Charnley suffering a calf injury in the second match at Huddersfield, which means he may miss the vital up semi-final between Wigan and Leeds next weekend, Shaun Wane is having to frantically juggle his resources.

It probably wouldn’t be going too far to say that in addition to long long-term injuries suffered in club action by Stuart Fielden, Pat Richards, Harrison Hansen, Jeff Lima and Gil Dudson, among others, a Warriors team which a few weeks ago was looking well-nigh unstoppable, is suddenly being crudely dismantled – and at the most crucial stage of the season.

It’s perhaps no surprise that after the additional injuries to Leuluai and Charnley, most Cherry and White supporters are indifferent to the 2012 series’s final outcome, which saw England triumph 18-10 in the first game, and the Exiles square things 20-32 in the rematch, the Exiles winning 38-42 on aggregate.

It’s a symptom of modern sport in general, of course, not just Rugby league, this seeming uncertainty as to where the loyalties of highly paid, high trained, highly conditioned athletes should lie: with their club, which often has done much, and has nearly always spent a fortune, developing their talent, or with their country.

There is similar debate within football circles and in Rugby Union. But in Rugby League, I think the problem is more acute.

There are a couple of factors in this.

First of all, international RL appears to be in a

mess. That is only my opinion, but I think there are plenty who’ll agree.

Many Rugby League players who abscond to Rugby Union say that they are going for the international challenge.

We natural-born cynics then respond: “Yeah, sure.

It’s nothing to do with the extra money, honest.” But the reality is that internationally, Rugby Union has got its house in order. There are regular international RU tournaments and tours, which are very well marketed, very well attended, and attract press and advertising attention on a global scale. By comparison, international Rugby League only seems to get exciting when the Australians and, to a lesser extent, the Kiwis, are involved.

The other problem is – and once again this is only a personal opinion – there seem to be constant bitter disputes among RL fans (there certainly have been in 2012) as to who should and shouldn’t be selected to represent England, and subsequently who should and shouldn’t be coaching them.

Granted, it is difficult to expect the Exiles team, who know they are only there to test England, and thus have nothing really to play for except pride, to treat these fixtures as anything more than training run-outs.

But to their credit, many of them have competed hard in this year’s competition, particularly in the last match (in fact overall this year, the Exiles’ players efforts have been worth far more than the apathetic response from so many fans suggested).

Playing

It doesn’t totally surprise me that a few of the Exiles lads withdraw before kick-off. Some overseas stars currently plying their trade in the UK, particularly those at the latter ends of their careers, really have to weigh up their priorities and if they make a decision that adding an Exiles shirt to their private collection is not worth the possible risk of missing out on a last chance for domestic silverware, then fair enough .

But the concept overall, while not totally

satisfactory, is better than nothing.

England need to be playing somebody on a fairly regular basis who will test them as a team and as individuals. Wales and France aren’t up to this yet, though France may be in the near future.

The only solution therefore – and at present it is apparently the only solution – is to put out another bunch of top quality Super league players who will not simply roll over and die – and the Exiles have certainly proved this year that they can fulfil that requirement.

Message

Personally, I never saw anything wrong with the concept behind ‘War of the Roses’.

It would certainly be the closest thing in the British game to an Aussie-type State of Origin series. And when it comes to Rugby League you only have to look at internet message boards to know there is still genuine antipathy between Lancashire fans and Yorkshire fans.

But I don’t pretend to understand the cost and logistics involved in arranging a Lancashire v Yorkshire showdown and, yes, I am open to the argument that the British game is no longer just about Lancs and Yorks, or it shouldn’t be, so perhaps it’s just completely impractical.

So the Exiles it is, then.

As a final word on this – despite the recent injuries suffered by Wigan players while waving that international banner which some have branded “pointless, stupid, costly” etc, let’s remember that many of these gainsayers are often the same people who were outraged to hear Wigan players booed by so-called England fans at Headingley and Langtree Park, accusing those responsible of rampant parochialism, and have levelled the same accusation at the England coaching team after some of their more controversial team selections … and yet what could be more parochial than wanting to do away with vital England fixtures in order to suit Wigan?

Veterans set to ride again

WIGAN Rugby Veterans took to their bikes again on Saturday July 7th in the second of their three annual charity rides.

Standish CC 1st XI played Elton CC 1st XI for the second day in a row but this time in the Cross Cup Competition.

For the second day on the trot Elton won the toss and put Standish in to bat. There were a couple of player changes from Saturday’s game and a different order for some players however, this didn’t seem to have the desired effect as opener Andy Hill for 2 followed by Joe Fielding for 10, captain Sam Heeley was lbw first ball and Ammar Baig only managed 1 run. The tail sadly offered little resistance as Standish were bowled out for 114 in the 45th over, only Usman Khushnood who came in at number 3 and scored more than half the team’s runs with a superb 66 could cope with the Elton bowling attack. In reply Elton didn’t get off to a good start losing opener John Ashworth for just 2 and pro Chris Read for 14 it looked as if another close game was on the cards however Elton

had other ideas. M Gowers edged and scrapped his way to 51 before being caught behind off the bowling of Toqeer Hassan and J Stone 23 put Elton in a commanding position. Elton lost 4 wickets in the chase and passed the target in the 35th over again.

New sports club needs urgent local support

TWO Wigan businessmen are looking to fellow businesses in the town to help with start-up funding to get a new sports club in Standish up and running for young people in the north Wigan area

Ian Gormley and John Bolster conceived the idea of S and S Boxing Club two years ago, when the two men were reflecting on the lack of facilities in the area for local youngsters.

John, an ex amateur boxer, suggested a boxing club, and the two spoke to local councillor George Fairhurst about their idea for a boxing club to serve the two communities and give the youngsters opportunity to learn a worthwhile sport and keep them off the streets.

Now their plans have taken a huge step forward with confirmation that St Marie’s Church in Standish has stepped into the ring to offer use of one of the church halls on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings, and Saturday mornings.

The club will be split into two sections each

session, Juniors ( up to 15) and Seniors ( 16 and above). Members will get fitness training, circuit training, and boxing training during the course of the sessions. Ian and John have recruited ex Wiganpro Boxer Keith Halliwell to help with boxing coaching.

Ian told the Courier: " We need some volunteers to help manage the club sessions during the week, and if there are any examateur or pro boxers out there who want to make a difference to young peoples' lives in Standish and Shevington by coaching, we would be delighted to hear from them."

The club urgently needs to raise funds for all the equipment needed to kit out a fullyfunctioning boxing and sports club: "We will be relying entirely on local donations and support to keep the club up and running. Sponsorship opportunities will also be available: we are looking in the first instance for a ring sponsor to enable us to buy our first boxing ring for the club, " said Ian. "To enable us to apply for sportsmatch funding, grants and sports council funding, we have to get some money in the bank to tick the right boxes," added Ian, "Your donations and

The World 800m bronze medalist, took part in a school assembly, where she was joined by Foundation’s Chairman Barrie Wells.

Jenny spoke of her sporting experiences as a world-class athlete and encouraged pupils to be the best they can.

Jenny and her coach then delivered two workshops based around the different aspects of Jenny’s own training.

Jenny said: “We have put a lot of thought into the workshops that we deliver to the children.

We aim to give them an insight into the life of an elite athlete as well as learning from the

principles I use in everyday training.

“I’m often asked about my biggest goal and my message is always, whatever it may be, go for it, work hard and don’t give up!”

The visit was part of the Wells Sport Foundation a charity which has been set up

by Barrie Wells to encourage greater participation of young people in sport.

Through the Athletes 4 Schools Scheme, schools and other c o m m u n i t y organisations can apply

for a visit from one of the 18 world class athletes Barrie Wells is privately funding to aid their 2012 Olympic potential.

Barrie added: “Jenny has a huge impact on her hometown and there is so much support behind her.

“You can tell by seeing the children’s faces when they meet Jenny how much the experience means to them.

“That is exactly what creating a legacy for sport is all about.”
