media guide The Marine Corps Installations National Capital Region-Marine Corps Base Quantico (MCINCR-MCBQ) conducts the MCM through a series of events organized around the sport of running, showcasing physical fitness and generating community goodwill in order to promote the high standards and discipline of the Marine Corps.

Throughout its 48 year history, the MCM has not only made a name for itself in sheer size as one of the largest marathons in the United States and the world but remains the largest marathon that does not offer prize money, making it “The People’s Marathon.” The MCM annually hosts 30,000 registered participants from ages 14 to 85 from all U.S. states and 50 countries.

The Marine Corps Marathon Organization is based at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va. and employs a staff of over 20 professionals who conduct event operations, sponsorship, marketing, customer service, database management and logistics for the variety of distance events coordinated annually.

media guide PRESS CREDENTIAL ACCESS Credentials grant access to the following areas: Media Parking: Maps and parking passes for the Media Parking area will be available in the Media Center or from the MCMO Public Relations Coordinator.

MCM Media Platform: Photographers and videographers from credentialed media outlets can capture the MCM start from the media platform located on the top of the Arlington Memorial Drive overpass on Route 110 in Arlington, Va. Another platform will be available to a limited number of photographers in the median on Route 110. All media must request placement on the platforms through the MCMO Public Relations Coordinator. All media must be parked on Memorial Avenue prior to 3:00 a.m. Media vehicles arriving after this time will not be permitted to park by law enforcement.

Finish Line: All media granted access to finish areas must remain behind the barricade not to interfere with incoming runners. Any media found interfering with incoming MCM, MCM50K or MCM10K participants, or creating distractions and/or obstacles for runners, will have their credentials removed and future credential privileges revoked.

Post-Event Access to Winners and Featured Runners: These individuals will be made available in the media tent at the conclusion of their run and can be made available to media throughout the day as requested.

Aid Stations: Any access to aid stations requires approval from the MCMO Public Relations Coordinator and includes an event-provided escort.

The MCMO hosts the media on the Friday afternoon of MCM Weekend. This year’s press brief will be conducted at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday, October 27.

The doors open at 12:30 p.m. Featured speakers include Sgt. Maj. Carlos Ruiz, Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, Col. Michael Brooks, Commander of MCINCR-MCB Quantico, Lt. Col. Matt Cavanaugh, USA (ret.) and his mission to run 12 marathons with 1 kidney, Mike Chard, Beirut Veteran running in honor of the 40th Anniversary of the Beirut Bombing in 1983 and more.

Media Tent: The MCM Media Tent will be located adjacent to the Finish Line on the Marine Corps War Memorial site in Arlington, Va. Limited Media workspace, Internet and event-day information will be available from 5:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 29.

Directions to the MCM Media Tent: The Media Tent is located near the MCM Finish line on the Memorial Access Road at the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial. Take Metro’s orange or blue line to the Rosslyn Station on marathon morning. The Arlington Cemetery Metro station will be closed until 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 29. Directions for parking media vehicles will be distributed with vehicle passes.

Online Data Access: Members of the media are invited to log on to www.marinemarathon.com. The live results database will provide access for members of the media to run queries on top finishers and individual participants.

media guide ARMED FORCES COMPETITION In association with the Armed Forces Sports Council, the MCM annually hosts the Armed Forces Marathon Competition. Military runners representing each Armed Forces branch arrive to the MCM from around the world to compete in this prestigious and good-natured rivalry. The Armed Forces Sports Program promotes the athleticism and dedication of military service personnel through participation in national and international sports competitions. The winning Armed Forces team is determined by the combined time of the top four male finish times and the combined time of the top two female finish times. The Armed Forces Competition has included men’s teams since 1998. In 2005, military women were included with the men in combined Armed Forces Competition. Starting in 2006, separate teams were formed for Armed Forces women.

media guide CHALLENGE CUP COMPETITION Annually, members of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines travel thousands of miles to compete against the U.S. Marine Corps All-Marine team in the Challenge Cup Competition. The winner is determined by the combined average time of the top three male finish times from both the U.S. and the British teams. The winning men’s team receives the Challenge Cup trophy, an 1897 Victorian silver cup, originally belonging to the H.M.S. Victory. Cumulative results are below.
