arim Rashid is one of the most prolific designers of his generation. Born in Cairo, Egypt in 1960, Karim’s ingenious creativity has inspired the masses and he has become one of the world’s most diversified industrial designers.
With over 300 prestigious awards under his belt, his legendary work spans more than 35 countries worldwide. To date, over 3,000 of his design projects have been put into production and include interiors, fashion, furniture, lighting, art, music and installations.

The nhow Berlin opened in November 2010 and is Europe’s first ever music and lifestyle hotel. It represents the arrival of a new generation of hotels: offbeat, lively, dynamic and with a local flair that simultaneously has worldwide appeal. The architecture of Sergei Tchoban and the interior design of Karim Rashid reflect the contrasts and creativity of the location.

El nhow Berlin abrió sus puertas en Noviembre de 2010 y es el primer hotel musical y de estilo de vida jamás inaugurado. Representa la llegada de una nueva generación de hoteles: fuera de lo común, animado, dinámico y con un toque local que a la vez tiene una apariencia cosmopolita. La arquitectura de Sergei Tchoban y el diseño interior de Karim Rashid reflejan los contrastes y la creatividad de su ubicación.
The uber contemporary hotel celebrates Berlin’s modern zeitgeist and connects it to the rest of the world by creating a technorganic land of data-driven art and spaces. Set on the Spree River, (the old line between east and west), the nhow Berlin bridges the digital age of information and the physical and spiritual needs of visitors. Upon stepping inside, one becomes part of the poetic, colourful and almost surreal world of Karim Rashid. His vision is a radical design movement, calling for a break with old ways of looking and living, and the creation of a world free from nostalgia. Digital and energetic designs infuse the whole building, from the lift area, to the wallpaper in the halls, through to the floor coverings in the rooms. The moment one enters the hotel lobby, you immediately step into Karim’s creative vision. The check-in area features custom-made fibre glass objects with amorphous forms, a field of lighted elements and printed ceramic tiles with a motif which represents the digital data that surrounds us, supports us and speaks for us. Este supra contemporáneo hotel celebra el espíritu de la época moderna de Berlín y la conecta con el resto del mundo a través de la creación de una tierra tecnoorgánica que conduce el arte y los espacios a través de datos. Situado en Spree River, (la antigua línea divisoria entre este y oeste) el nhow Berlín es un puente entre la era digital de la información y las necesidades físicas y espirituales del visitante. Una vez en el interior, uno se convierte en parte del mundo poético, colorido y casi surrealista de Karim Rashid. Su visión es un movimiento radical de diseño, reclamando una ruptura con las antiguas formas de ver y vivir, y la creación de un mundo libre de nostalgia. Los diseños digitales y energéticos impulsan la totalidad del edificio, desde la zona de ascensores, hasta las pantallas de los pasillos, y a través de los revestimientos de los suelos en las habitaciones. En el momento en el que uno se adentra en la recepción del hotel, inmediatamente da un paso hacia la visión creativa de Karim. El área de facturación cuenta con objetos amorfos realizados a medida en fibra de cristal, un campo de elementos iluminados y azulejos de cerámica impresos con motivos que representan la información digital que nos rodea, nos apoya y habla por nosotros. Subdued colours and soft curves create a sensual atmosphere in the lounge and smaller lounges offering privacy and intimacy are separated with glass walls. The sculptural ceiling of liquid-like plastic, indirect lighting and projections create a relaxed mood. The stunning bar area is made of gold-lacquered fibre glass and is beautifully complemented by the voluptuous and ergonomically designed couches and chairs. The area also incorporates custom made benches, stunning ceiling sculptures and transparent curtains with Rashid’s trademark “digipop design”. The light filled restaurant adorns a pastel colour palette with green shades to aid digestion and light pink to soothe the senses. Organically formed light installations, lacquered fibre glass and striking sculptures serve as both art and object, form and function. The hotel rooms were designed to offer functionality but also inspire the fantasy and creativity of the guests. Every room has its own creative energy and each tower incorporates different colour schemes, although Rashid’s ‘digipop’ design is present throughout. www.nhow-hotels.com 20

The creative concept communicates and embodies knowledge in the new digital age, language in the shrinking global landscape and innovation and mobility in this third technological revolution. Naples is no longer just a historic city in southern Italy, it is now an intellectual modern information haven that extends itself throughout the rest of the world. The state-of-the-art station integrates seamlessly with its surroundings and provides a platform for innovative cutting-edge design strategy. Karim’s vision was to effectively utilise the descent from the piazza to the subway platforms to represent a metaphorical transition from the conscious brain to the spiritual mind. On entering the station, visitors walk through a space which is clad with tiles, each adorning new words created in this last century. On arrival at the lobby, the soft nature of the space and striking palette of colours and patterns makes a big visual impact. Sculptures and graphic artworks line the escalators, leading to platforms with backlit patterns on the walls. The journey from the busy piazza down towards the platforms offers an intimate, focused environment and incorporates abstract images, digital artwork, accent colours and rolling LED screens displaying universally recognised words. Today, The University of Naples’ Metro Station sets a benchmark for outstanding innovative design in our modern digital world. 22

La visión de Karim era utilizar de manera efectiva el descenso de la plaza hacia las plataformas del metro como una representación metafórica de la transición desde la consciencia cerebral a la mente espiritual.

La Giralda and The Seville Cathedral district share the truly amazing EME Cathedral Hotel. Designed by Grupo Maireles, the stunning boutique hotel realises the dream of combining creative space with contemporary art and culture which praises Andalucían spirit on an international level. La Giralda y la Catedral hispalense comparten barrio con este sorprendente Hotel, proyectado por el Grupo Maireles para convertir en realidad el sueño de un espacio creativo, artístico y cultural que a su vez contribuyese a ensalzar internacionalmente el duende andaluz. Al reto de unir en un solo edificio 14 casas sevillanas del siglo XVI, con sus diferentes alturas y niveles, hay que añadirle la dificultad de concentrar en un único concepto arquitectónico el pasado, el presente y el futuro de una ciudad tan emblemática como Sevilla. El diseño arquitectónico, a cargo de Juan Pedro Donaire, es una audaz mezcla de barroco, arte islámico y diseño contemporáneo, en el que prima el minimalismo y que se desarrolla en torno a un patio central. El impresionante muro calado de este “atípico” patio sevillano es en sí mismo la síntesis de la arquitectura del hotel: basado en la “sebka” o lacería islámica, su diseño ondulante es en realidad un grafismo moderno. The landmark hotel, in a single building, unites 14 Sevillian houses from the sixteenth century and features different heights and levels. Incorporating a unique but challenging architectural concept (the past, present and future), the end result has been well-received and has given the city of Seville its very own iconic hotel. Designed by architect Pedro Donaire, The Cathedral Hotel is characterised by a bold fusion of baroque influences, Islamic art, contemporary design and raw minimalism. One of the main focal points is the inner circulatory ring which joins the entrances to the bedrooms and opens up into a large central courtyard. At the heart of the building, the stunning Sevillian style patio has been decorated with a large whitewashed wall created from modern undulated writing based around sebka or Islamic tracery. In keeping with the style of the building, the interiors cleverly incorporate natural raw materials in conjunction with innovative materials and the latest technology. Features include black lacquered wooden canopies, glass coated flat black walls, soft LED lighting, and avant-garde bathrooms with sinks made from carved stone and rainforest showers. The hotel represents a melting pot of different styles to incorporate the city’s rich heritage and its lively and vibrant modern culture today. Dedicated to gastronomic excellence, the urban boutique hotel is home to seven bars and restaurants which include typical Andalucían tapas, the first ever Japanese restaurant in the centre of Seville and gastronomic Mediterranean cuisine courtesy of 7* Michelin Chef Martin Berasategui. Leading Spanish architect, Ramón Esteve, is one of the most important and influential names in the world of contemporary architecture. Born in Valencia, Ramón studied at The Superior Technical School of Architecture in Madrid and started his professional career in furniture design, working with prestigious brands in the industry such as VONDOM, Vibia and De Castelli. Today, his prestigious studio in Valencia is responsible for a wide range of large scale public projects and designs for individual clients. The common denominators in all his projects are the natural interpretation of space and the conception of volumes which achieve full significance when the environment and architecture are in complete harmony and create a coherent, beautiful and unique landscape.

His private housing project in monasteries was considered by The International Business Times as one of the top ten houses in 2010. From its elevated position, the house represents ‘a window to the sea’ and the volumes play an important role in giving the structure a different appearance from each angle. The stunning combination of stone, wood and glass ooze understated minimalism and provide a relaxing balance. Carefully positioned wooden panels are placed between the masonry walls and buttresses essentially to open and close spaces. This creates a changing reality in line with the transformation in nature caused by the passage of time. The business orientated trade fair is the global benchmark for the home furnishing sector and their recent event in Italy was an invaluable promotional vehicle in showcasing extraordinary designs, new revolutionary products and a plethora of ideas and inspiration.
