(a pen for Naoto Fukasawa)
Tajun was the final project for my Product Design 101 class in which we were tasked with choosing from a list of designers and designing a functioning pen for them using their design language. For this project I decided to make a pen for the Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa. Inspired by Fukasawa’s Japanese background and his work which heavily focuses on simplicity, I came up with a simple one-piece design made from Beech wood. I chose to name it Tanjun (単純), one of the many words in Japanese for simplicity.
The intention behind the design of Tanjun was to create a pen that had a meditative feeling to it. The goal was to evoke a feeling of connection between the user and the pen. It’s just them and the pen.
The first project assigned in my Product Design 240 class: Designers’ Tools. We were tasked with building a stool made from White Pine based off the example stool provided by the instructor.
The goal of this project was to utilize our newly acquired skills and build a stool with a design of our own. For this version of the stool, I wanted to keep it similar to the height of the original, but with a wider frame and with an overall more modern look. I adjusted the size of the seat so that it was wider, providing more surface area for a more relaxed feel. The idea behind this design was to create a dining/kitchen stool with a sleek design using Beech wood.

Assigned as the class’s first sewing project, this pencil pouch was made with a two-piece construction using canvas and binding. The pouch utilizes a simple design that provides all the necessary space for pens and pencils.
It certainly is quite wrong to read a poem in a hurry as if it were a telegram...When we are sitting in an armchair reading a really good book we need to slow down our reading speed.
Quick legibility is the quality required most of all for road signs, yet on most of the signs we see the words have completely lost their shape.
