bloom

a pen designed with a pursuit of growth F/W PD 330

bloom’s design is inspired by organic shapes and formations in order to evoke a feeling of nature and growth hence its name, bloom. The pen features a series of organic shaped carvings with three openings that are mirrored on both faces of the pen. These openings, which serve an aesthetic purpose as well as a functional one, act as viewports that allow the user to keep track of the amount of ink in the cartridge. bloom was designed as a tool for creation. With every line forged, a new idea is realized and grows.

process The process for bloom began with an idea. A pen that combines both minimalism with abstract organic forms to create a visual and tactal experience for the user. A pen that gets the job done but looks good doing it.

A key aspect of this project was keeping in mind easy and cost-effective manufacturing when designing the construction of the pen. As a result of this, bloom is only comprised of four parts; the main body of the pen, the cap, the end cap, and the cartridge. All the parts utilized pressure fitting to minimize the number of parts used as well as the amount of material used when manufacturing the pen.

beech was the 2nd project for my Product Design 240 class in which the goal of the project was to utilize our newly acquired woodworking skills to design and build a 2nd iteration of our 1st stool. Beech utilizes a wider frame and seat for an overall more relaxed feel. Beech’s name comes directly from the wood used to build the stool, beech which is known for its pale cream shade and durability. This cut of wood was the perfect choice for a piece of home furniture.

tanjun

Tajun was the final project for my Product Design 101 class in which we were tasked with choosing from a list of designers and designing a functioning pen for them using their design language. For this project I decided to make a pen for the Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa. Inspired by Fukasawa’s Japanese background and his work which heavily focuses on simplicity, I came up with a simple onepiece design made from Beech wood. I chose to name it Tanjun (単純), one of the many words in Japanese for simplicity.
