PD

Designed for my PD 301 class during winter term, Echo is a portable speaker designed to be the ultimate auditory companion. Its friendly and organic form evokes a sense of approachability that encourages users to pick up and interact with the device. Echo seeks to become an extension of the user and their listening experience, and with its perfect on the go size it can be moved and used in a multitude of settings.

The process for Echo began with a series of sketches to explore form and silhouette. Once the desired form was found, I then made a series of paper models and was most happy with the overall shape and feel of the model seen on this page. After, I began designing the grill pattern and button layout and brought the whole thing into rhino to model and eventually be 3D printed. It took several prints and tweaking of sizing to achieve the final working prototype.

12

Bloom was the first project for my PD 330 3D modeling class in which the objective of the project was to design a pen and eventually 3d print it by modeling it in Rhino. Bloom’s design is inspired by organic shapes and formations in order to evoke a feeling of nature and growth hence its name. Bloom was designed as a tool for creation, with every line forged, a new idea is realized and grows.

ideation

The process for Bloom began with an idea. A pen that combines both minimalism and abstract organic forms to create a visual and tactal experience for the user. The pen features a series of organic shaped carvings with three openings that are mirrored on both faces of the pen. These openings, which serve an aesthetic purpose as well as a functional one, act as viewports that allow the user to keep track of the amount of ink in the cartridge.

Once I had fully fleshed out the idea and desired design, I then began to bring the idea to life in Rhino. The design went through several model iterations until it was ready to be 3D printed. Utilizing the 3D printing lab at my school, I printed multiple test prints on Prusa printers until I was happy with how the pen looked and functioned. I then sent the print to Shapeways where they produced the final test print.

A key aspect of this project was keeping in mind easy and cost-effective manufacturing when designing the construction of the pen. As a result of this, Bloom is only comprised of four parts; the main body of the pen, the cap, the end cap, and the cartridge. All parts utilize pressure fitting to minimize the number of parts used as well as the amount of material used when manufacturing the pen.

Shark was the second project for my PD 330 3D modeling class. For this specific project we were tasked with designing, 3D modeling, and rendering a handheld vacuum. This project spanned the entirety of the second half of fall term and put to test all the 3D modeling skills and tools we had learned from our first project. It was also my first introduction to Blender.

Shark’s design is heavily inspired by sharks as seen by its overall shape. For this specific design, I wanted the silhouette of the vacuum to appear very streamlined in order represent the sleek shape and skin texture that sharks possess.

The power button is located at the handle’s front and features an illuminated ring which indicates that the vacuum is on. The three gill shaped lights are the power indicators and allow the user to confidently keep track of the battery life. Three fully illuminated bars indicate full battery, two; half battery and so forth. When shark’s battery is critically low, all three gills as well as the ring illuminate red.

The home stool was the second project for my PD 240 class in which the goal of the project was to utilize our newly acquired woodworking skills to design and build a second iteration of our first stool. The design utilizes a wider frame and seat for an overall more relaxed feel.

Home stool was made using beech wood, known for its pale cream shade and durability, this cut of wood was the perfect choice for a piece of home furniture.

単純 単純

Tajun was the final project for my PD 101 class in which we were tasked with choosing from a list of designers and designing a functioning pen for them using their design language. For this project I decided to make a pen for the Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa. Inspired by Fukasawa’s Japanese background and his work which heavily focuses on simplicity, I came up with a simple one-piece design made from beech wood. I chose to name it Tanjun 単純, one of the many words in Japanese for simplicity.

inspiration & ideation

Tanjun was designed and crafted to evoke a feeling of connection between the user and the pen as a way of paying homage to Fukazawa’s minimalist and almost meditative design style. Left over beech from the home stool project was used to make this pen. Beech was the perfect material to reference Fukazawa’s furniture design, as a major point of inspiration for my design was Fukazawa’s Hiroshima lounge chair.

Messenger is a cross body sling bag designed for the modern-day traveler and adventure goer. Its compact size and cross body fit make it a perfect on the go bag

Messenger is a prototype bag I made this past summer. I wanted to give myself a mini project while at home for break, so I decided to use some leftover fabric I had from sewing projects earlier in the school year to make a bag. Messenger is designed to be an everyday bag that people can take with them while walking around the city or hiking. It features one main pocket which makes up the entirety of the bag, that allows for an abundance
