CELEBRITIES EVERYONE’S TALKING ABOUT CHRIS BROWN GETS SHOT AT PRE-VMA PARTY A party that the ‘Kiss Kiss’ singer Chris Brown hosted to celebrate his new album release ended in turmoil last week. The top celebrity hotspot 10AK in LA became a battleground of screaming celebrities and gunshots. Four people were struck including the RnB singer, but fortunately no fatalities occurred. It seems Chris Brown hasn’t had the best luck of late, having been released from prison recently and still being on parole, his life’s never lacking in drama. He tweeted this statement at 5.45am after the incident “‘It’s disappointing that we as a society can’t have fun or enjoy ourselves without any altercations sometimes. Miss me with the bullsh*t!!!” Perhaps it’s time for a few nights in!

SIMON COWELL PREDICTS ONE DIRECTION SPLIT By far one of Simon Cowell’s biggest musical successes, however this hasn’t stopped the millionaire from predicting a split. The music mogul believes Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall Horan will make just two more albums together before they go their separate ways. It appears he already has a replacement eight-piece boy band waiting in the wings in this year’s X Factor. Well they have dubbed the programme a ‘money making machine’!

MILEY CYRUS HOMELESS MAN IS WANTED BY POLICE Jesse Helt, 22 was watched by millions at the MTV awards collecting Cyrus’s award for video of the year. The former

Disney star elected Helt to go and receive the award with the aim of raising awareness of homelessness amongst young people. In his speech he said, “I’ve survived in shelters all over. I’ve cleaned your hotels rooms, I’ve been an extra in your movies, I’ve been an extra in your life. Though I may have been invisible to you in the streets, I have many of the same dreams that brought many of you here tonight.” However, since his night on the red carpet, it’s transpired that the man is actually wanted by police for burglary.

MARIAH CAREY AND NICK CANNON SPLIT After six years of marriage, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon’s union has come to a bitter end. “There is trouble in paradise, we have been living in separate houses for a few months now,” the 33-year-old ‘America’s Got Talent’ host revealed. However, unfortunately for all those gossip lovers out there, the potential reasons for the split have remained very hush hush. It’s been reported that Cannon has been forced to sign a confidentiality agreement, preventing him from revealing any secrets about their split. I bet she must be breathing a sigh of relief because everybody knows the comedian’s reputation for over sharing! Recently in a radio interview, he named five celebrities he’d had sex with including his wife, Kim Kardashian, Christina Milian, Selita Ebanks and Nicole Scherzinger. Unsurprisingly, the “My All” singer didn’t take too well to this revelation. Let’s hope they keep it amicable for their two adorable twins Morocco and Monroe.

CHRISTINA AGUILERA NAMES HER BABY GIRL SUMMER RAIN The “Genie in a Bottle” singer welcomed her baby girl with fiancé Matt Rutler on August 16 via C-section at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles.

SAM SMITH TO COLABORATE WITH CHRIS BROWN During an interview on radio show In:Demand at the V Festival, the ‘Money on My Mind’ musical sensation expressed his desire to work with Chris Brown. “I love Chris Brown’s music so much yeah, I’d love to meet him so possibly who knows, it would be cool to collaborate.” Chris, who still remains on parole, performed his own unique version of Sam’s hit “Stay With Me” which instantly received thousands of likes on his Instagram account.

SHAKIRA PREGNANT AGAIN Colombian singer Shakira has confirmed she is expecting her second child with Barcelona player Gerard Pique. Following months of speculation Shakira announced the news to Mexican Cosmopolitan where she also revealed that her relationship with the 27-year-old footballer is “perfect” and they “couldn’t be more in love.” The ‘She Wolf ’ singer, who has been in a relationship with Pique since 2010, said: “Seeing me in love is a constant state, there are no questions as the answer is simply there.” Shakira and Gerard met four years ago when Pique appeared in the music video for her hit song ‘Waka Waka’ (This Time for Africa). They already have a 20-month-old son Milan together.

ANGELINA JOLIE AND BRAD PITT FINALLY WED Jolie and Pitt have secretly married in a quaint chapel nestled in the south of France. It has been intimately revealed that Brad ‘gasped’ when he first saw his bride wearing her floor-length gown embroidered with antique lace and silk. Before the wedding, the ‘Maleficent’ star obtained a marriage license in California from the same

judge who conducted the long awaited ceremony. The date was perfectly planned to commemorate the ten year anniversary of the film Mr and Mrs Smith, where the couple famously met and fell in love. All their children were in attendance, including Zahara and Vivienne who reportedly threw petals as the beautiful actress made her way down the aisle. Accompanying the flower girls were Shiloh and Knox who served as the ring bearers. The wedding rings they chose are believed to be designed by their close friend Robert Procop, who also designed Angelina’s stunning engagement ring, an estimated 16-carat, emerald-cut diamond and worth approximately $500,000. However, an exotic honeymoon location wasn’t on the cards for the couple, as they returned to work shortly after saying ‘I do’. Currently starring together in the film ‘By the Sea’, the couple are reportedly reigniting the passion they once felt when they first worked together ten years ago. The plotline has yet to be revealed, but what is for sure is that the couple are yet again playing husband and wife in the flick, which is being released in 2016. Since the news has been announced, celebrities from all over have flooded social media congratulating the pair. Pat O’Brien shared: “Congrats to Brad and Angelina. Two of the nicest people in Hollywood.”’ George Clooney also said, ‘How great is that?!! I’m really happy for Brad and Angie and their whole family.” It appears that Brad’s ‘psychic’ Ron Bard, has been proved wrong after publicly stating “I think Angelina is a clever girl, she’s boxed him in but he doesn’t care about that because I think he loves the children more than the relationship.” Wonder who’s having the last laugh?

A day after giving birth, The Voice coach announced her unusual name choice, tweeting: “So proud to welcome our beautiful daughter Summer Rain Rutler into the world.” This is Christina’s second child, who already has a 6-year-old son Max from her previous marriage to Jordan Bratman.

The ‘Hollarback’ singer first launched her L.A.M.B. collection in 2004 and has been noticeably absent from catwalks whilst concentrating on looking after her three young children; Kingston (8), Zuma (6), and Apollo born in February this year. L.A.M.B. has also recently collaborated with US underwear line Hanky Panky in a collection of bright lingerie. Pink Cherry Couture

ormer Harrods and Topshop designer and stylist Cherry Cumberland has branched out on her own to launch chic kaftan and swimwear label, Pink Cherry Couture. The label is making headlines in the UK, Dubai and Marbella where celebrities such as Ferne McCann and Chelsee Healey have been snapping up these gorgeous designs. Cherry, a BA fashion graduate, decided to launch the brand after struggling for years to find a decent swimwear and matching kaftan label. “When holidaying, I could find gorgeous swimwear - however no cover ups, unless I wanted a cheap looking kaftan that everyone would have or was

willing to pay silly amounts on a basic draped kaftan made from fabric which is not at all worth it due to the poor quality. I struggled. And I know I am not alone. Pool parties and beach clubs are becoming ever increasingly popular. Most women want to look different and stand out looking fabulous and that’s what Pink Cherry Couture is all about. Making the customer feel like the most beautiful woman in the world in her unique, luxury garment.” Another major benefit of choosing Pink Cherry Couture is Cherry only ever makes one-of-akind kaftans so no two women will have the same garment. The brand is selling from Instagram and Twitter with a fully transactional website due for launch later this year.

NEWS If you’re anything like the Marbella Rocks team to really appreciate your nights out there’s nothing quite like a relaxing night in. Cue DVD, dinner and a good bottle of wine. Here’s a rundown and recipe for a quality night in.

RECIPE

ASIAN SQUASH SALAD WITH CRISPY DUCK

This salad with tender duck meat and crispy skin is perfect to accompany the spiced roasted squash. A healthy, tasty and tangy dish from Jamie Oliver. Ingredients: (makes 4-6 portions) 1 x 2 kg Gressingham duck 1 large butternut squash 1 small bunch of fresh mint, leaves picked and chopped 1–2 dried red chillies, crumbled 1 teaspoon coriander seeds ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon For the dressing: Extra virgin olive oil zest and juice of 1–2 limes 1 teaspoon sesame oil 1 tablespoon soy sauce 1 teaspoon soft brown sugar 1 fresh red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped 1 clove of garlic, peeled and finely grated 5 spring onions, trimmed and finely sliced 1 large bunch of fresh coriander, leaves picked and stalks finely chopped 1. Preheat the oven to 180ºC/350ºF/gas 4. Wash the duck and pat it dry, inside and out, with kitchen paper, then rub it all over with salt and pepper. Place it in a tray and roast in the preheated oven for around 2 hours, turning it every now and then. Halfway through, you’ll probably need to drain away a lot of the fat from the bird. (Don’t throw it away, though. Sieve it and keep the fat in a jar in the fridge for a couple of months as this is perfect to use for roast potatoes.)

16 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02 04

2. In a pestle and mortar bash up the dried chillies and coriander seeds and add the ground cinnamon and a good pinch of salt and pepper. Scoop the seeds out of your squash and put them to one side. Cut the squash into wedges, place them in a roasting tray, and drizzle over enough olive oil just to coat. Sprinkle over the ground spices and give the squash a good toss, spreading the pieces out in one layer. 3. Once the duck has been in the oven for 1 hour and 15 minutes, add the tray of squash to the oven and roast for about 45 minutes. 4. Meanwhile, rinse the squash seeds after removing any fibres. Season with salt and pepper and drizzle with olive oil. Toast them in a dry frying pan until they’re golden and crisp, and put aside. 5. To make the dressing, put the lime juice and zest into a bowl and add the same amount of olive oil, plus the sesame oil and the soy sauce. Stir in the sugar, chilli, garlic, green spring onion ends and coriander stalks. 6. After 2 hours, when the duck is nice and crispy, and the squash soft and sticky, take both trays out of the oven. Using two forks, shred the duck meat off the bone and put into a large bowl. While the duck and squash are still warm, toss with the toasted seeds, half the coriander leaves, half the mint and half the white spring onion

slices. Pour on the dressing and toss together. Serve sprinkled with the rest of the coriander, mint and white spring onion slices.

FOOD & WINE MATCH

WINE MATCH

Duck and Pinot Noir - this a match made in heaven. But with the spices and strong Asian flavours, you need to consider other elements. The common factor is that duck is a fatty meat that tends to need a wine with some sharpness and acidity to cut through and some ripe fruit to contrast with the rich flesh. Think Pinot! With the chilli and the Asian spice you may want a riper Pinot, so look at a full-bodied Californian or a Chilean bottle. Saving your best burgundy for another day! ALTERNATIVE GRAPE VARIETY MATCHES

Having made the point about acidity, I have to admit that Merlot, which often lacks it, goes quite well indeed with duck. Especially in Asian style cuisine, with the sugar, soy, and garlic which make the hoisin dressing. If you would prefer a white wine, then try a Gewurztraminer. An aromatic grape variety, perfect for Asian food. It has aromas of lychees, roses and passion fruits and its sweetness perfectly offsets the spices in the dish. Trust me. Try something new today- Salut!

Marbella Rocks exclusive interview with Ultima Promotions director, Phil Savage

ULTIMA PROMOTIONS Ultima Promotions is Marbella’s leading event management and promotions team, behind the hugely successful Aqwa Mist, News Café and Plaza Beach among others.

form a legitimate business, we grew and the Ultima name seemed ideal and had something meaningful.

Marbella Rocks caught up with its Director Phil Savage to talk about running Ultima Promotions during one of the busiest summers Marbella has ever seen.

Ultima as it stands now is different from the big parties of old. As for our vision, it is to build a name businesses can trust in and deliver the results we are hired for time and time again. We now manage various venues promotions and marketing to maximise every aspect of what they do creating consistent awesome parties (haha!) We are very selective about who we work with.

How and when did Ultima Promotions form? Ultima the brand has a bigger heritage than you may think. Justin Moore my partner in the promotions side of what I do formed Ultima over 15 years ago with his then partner Danny Patrick. They did incredible one off events in unique unexpected venues like airport terminals and theme parks with massive production and iconic DJ’s of the time. It got increasingly difficult for these events to take place on the scale they once were so the brand got shelved but never fo‎rgotten. Then when the time came to

at Plaza with some great promotions taking place and huge crazy parties. It’s been a pleasure working there, I love it!

What was the vision behind Ultima?

Newscafe has always been a great bar/club but with our collaboration it is a machine, with great clientele and full every night of the summer months. Aqwa Mist I have a vested interest in as I’m a shareholder. Aqwa has gone from strength to strength and working with Ultima we have managed to bring some of the world’s biggest artists from Tiniest Tempah, Tyga, Neyo, Rudimental, and the one and only Chris Brown to name a few. And lastly our newest venue Plaza Beach. Plaza has undergone a huge transformation this year with a massive investment to refurbish the beach club. It looks spectacular now. Ultima was tasked to make the investment pay dividend. 2014 has been a year of breaking records

You’ve had a busy summer securing top acts like Chris Brown and Rudimental for Aqwa Mist, was it difficult getting these big name acts to come to Marbella?

NEWS It is difficult and a lot of pressure but all worth it when you see everyone enjoying the artists/DJ’s you have brought. Very rewarding indeed!! Your contacts book must be bulging, any hints on who’s the next big signing?

my routine I’m good to go. I’m fortunate not to need much sleep and feel fine. It catches up on me sometimes, big events like Chris Brown take it out of me but generally I feel great and love what I do!

I have a few in the pipeline. Most already announced but I have a few surprises for you that I’m working on at minute. Watch this space.

What do you do to stay grounded all summer and not burn out? I love the gym and make it one of my priorities. When I don’t get to go I feel terrible in myself. That and go to the cinema to disconnect for a couple of hours when I get the chance. Who’s the best/most fun celebrity you’ve partied with during your time in Marbella?

How often do you have to party or at least be seen at your venues?

The lads from Rudimental, cool as f*!k. 50 cent deserves a mention. He still keeps it real and makes time for people. Nice guy. And who’s the worst/most difficult?

I work everyday and suppose party on some levels most days (not always drinking) but take one night off to catch up on my sleep. You can always see me outside Newscafe, stood at the end of Aqwa main bar ‎or having fun down at Plaza Beach. But I let my hair down maybe once or twice a month and have a

Sierra Nevada in the winter‎when I can for a bit of Snowboarding with the guys! What are your plans for when the party season draws to a close, are you taking any time out?

DEA the award winning interior design studio brings his design to Marbella!

The stunning, new Puerto Banus cocktail bar, Freudenhaus, opened its’ doors in July this year. Located next to the Japanese Sakura Restaurant in the urbanisation of Jardines del Puerto, just a stones throw from the famous port. Designed to be an after dinner venue - serving the widest choice of house signature, classic and seasonal cocktails. We asked some questions to Alex Kovachev, manager of IDEA, a Bulgarian multidisciplinary design studio that works across Europe and came up with the striking interior design for Freudenhaus.

What significant projects have you done before? We have been very fortunate to work with clients that can afford to fulfill their dreams with our work, so we have done everything from artdeco residences to Moroccan riads, venues with extravagant lighting systems, restaurants, bars and even yachts! Our latest projects included DSTRKT London, a restaurant and bar in central London, where we have been very lucky to be selected as “Best new club in London” in 2012 at the London club and bar awards, and “Best Club” in 2013 and 2014 in the same awards. We completed The Pearl in Berlin last year, which has been shortlisted for three awards at this year’s edition of the prestigious Restaurant and Bar Design Awards. Also shortlisted for “Best Bar in Europe” is a bar which we did in Murcia called NERO. At the moment we are quite busy working on a number of nightclub projects - one in Frankfurt, one in Hamburg, a seafood restaurant in London and of course we recently completed Freudenhaus in Marbella.

Why did you agree to do this project in Marbella? Well I have had a very good relationship with the clients for years, so naturally I jumped at the opportunity to work with them again. Plus it’s in Marbella so it’s kind of a “no brainer!” What is it going to be like? Well we were lucky to get a precise and interesting brief from the client, which doesn’t always happen. It’s a place that aims for the surroundings to compliment the content of the bar - in this case the content of the bar is The Best Cocktails in Costa del Sol! Se we tried to give those cocktails a nice environment. The style of the venue could only be described as contemporary, decadent, chic - I would say.

COCKTAIL OF THE MONTH

Where did you find inspiration for this bar? From the clients... they had great passion for the concept of the bar and explained in great detail what they wanted the place to look like. We did something completely different which shocked them when they first saw our concept and they politely tried to let us know that we will probably be working on a new presentation. After sleeping on it, the next day at breakfast they said “we want it exactly like this, don’t change anything!” How important is the interior in a bar? How important are first impressions? How important is the interior of your house? I think it is subjective, but in my opinion it is paramount. The interior design can communicate a lot about a place and a brand; you know what to expect walking into the Mandarin Oriental - that is something that is communicated only though what you see. So I believe that if a place doesn’t look good, it doesn’t look right, it won’t work no matter how good the drinks are - and vice versa of course. www.freudenahausmarbella.com info@freudenhausmarbella.com Tel: +34 6333 59934 Address: Urbanization Jardines del Puerto, Puerto Banus

WHAT TO DO IF YOU’VE BEEN BURGLED. Statistics in Spain Crime rates in Spain remain among the lowest in the EU according to the latest Interior Ministry crime report. However, since the economic crisis began in 2008, there has been a steep increase in domestic burglaries and theft as a result. In 2012 the number of burglaries in homes rose by 25.4%. The message to expat residents is not to panic. There are some simple precautions to take, as you would back in the UK, such as fitting security grills, installing exterior lights and alarms, being careful about what content is posted on social networks, especially anything to do with trips and holidays away from home. It also helps to take out a quality home insurance policy that will cover your home and its contents should any unfortunate incident occur.

When you discover you’ve been burgled

As soon as you discover you’ve been burgled, whether it’s a break-‐in or theft at your home, first call the police. Don’t touch anything until they arrive. A police report will be needed to process your claim.

Then secure your home to avoid further damage, board up any broken windows, make a list of damaged or missing belongings, detail the damage to your home resulting from the burglary, taking photographs of damaged windows or door. At this point, you can call the claims department of your home insurance company. We advise you to have your policy on hand when you call. Peace-‐of-‐mind with Linea Directa

We understand that your peace-‐of-‐mind is important, especially in your home. Our claims department will take a full statement of the circumstances of the incident. We will check the insurance coverage with you explaining all the procedures. If emergency repairs are required from locksmiths to glaziers, we will help you swiftly handle your claim and get things back to normal as soon as possible. Fortunately, incidents of theft in Spain are relatively small compared to other EU countries, however should you be burgled, your homeowner’s insurance policy will cover the loss or destruction of personal property if it’s stolen from your home. Hold-‐up outside the home

In many cases, your home insurance policy may cover you for any incidents that occur outside your home. Should you be the victim of a hold-‐up outside your premises your personal belongings are covered. We will ensure replacement documents are quickly and efficiently dealt with, and if required, arrange the locks on your home to be changed.

ROBIN WILLIAMS

21st July 1951 - 11th August 2014 ISSUE 04 02 | MARBELLAROCKS

23

FEATURES US Author Tom Clempson has posted a very thought provoking post about this topic, one that is definitely worth reading.

When people die from cancer, their cause of death can be various horrible things – seizure, stroke, pneumonia – and when someone dies after battling cancer, and people ask “How did they die?”, you never hear anyone say “pulmonary embolism”, the answer is always “cancer”. A pulmonary embolism can be the final cause of death with some cancers, but when a friend of mine died from cancer, he died from cancer. That was it. And when I asked my wife what Robin Williams died from, she very wisely replied “depression”.

Comedy actor Robin Williams’ suicide after a long battle with depression aged only 63 has left the world in shock.

R

obin Williams first sprung to fame as an alien in hit US comedy series ‘Mork and Mindy’ in 1978. From this TV debut the star never looked back, landing lead roles in some of the most poignant films of our time such as the acclaimed ‘Dead Poet’s Society’, ‘Awakenings’ and as a therapist in ‘Good Will Hunting,’ which won him an Oscar in 1998. He also brought to life unforgettable performances as divorcee turned nanny ‘Mrs Doubtfire’, Peter Pan in ‘Hook’ alongside the lead in family adventure film ‘Jumanji’ and the voice of Genie in Disney’s ‘Aladdin’. His fanbase was wide and far reaching, from young to old. He took well to serious roles as well as comedic ones with gusto. While the tributes have been pouring in from family, friends and fans all around the world so has the subject of his depression. Is it still socially acceptable to say someone has died from suicide or should we actually be saying depression?

04 24 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02

The word “suicide” gives many people the impression that “it was his own decision,” or “he chose to die, whereas most people with cancer fight to live.” And, because depression is still such a misunderstood condition, you can hardly blame people for not really understanding. Just a quick search on Twitter will show how many people have little sympathy for those who commit suicide…but, just as a pulmonary embolism is a fatal symptom of cancer, suicide is a fatal symptom of depression. Depression is an illness, not a choice of lifestyle. You can’t just “cheer up” with depression, just as you can’t choose not to have cancer. When someone commits suicide as a result of depression, they die from depression – an illness that kills millions each year. It is hard to know exactly how many people actually die from depression each year because the figures and statistics only seem to show how many people die from “suicide” each year (and you don’t necessarily have to suffer depression to commit suicide, it’s usually

Robin Williams didn’t die from suicide. I only just heard the sad, sad news of Robin Williams’ death. My wife sent me a message to tell me he had died, and, when I asked her what he died from, she told me something that nobody in the news seems to be talking about.

FEATURES just implied). But considering that one person commits suicide every 14 minutes in the US alone, we clearly need to do more to battle this illness, and the stigmas that continue to surround it. Perhaps depression might lose some of its “it was his own fault” stigma, if we start focusing on the illness, rather than the symptom. Robin Williams didn’t die from suicide. He died from depression and it wasn’t his choice to suffer that.

president Barack Obama, said: “Robin Williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny, a president, a professor, a bangarang Peter Pan, and everything in between. But he was one of a kind. He arrived in our lives as an alien - but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit. He made us laugh. He made us cry. He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most — from our troops stationed abroad to the marginalized on our own streets. The Obama family offers our condolences to Robin’s family, his friends, and everyone who found their voice and their verse thanks to Robin Williams.” Ben Affleck, Williams’ co-star from ‘Good Will Hunting’ said: “Heartbroken. Thanks chief - for your friendship and for what you gave the world. Robin had a ton of love in him. He personally did so much for so many people. He made Matt and my dreams come true,” Affleck wrote on Facebook, referring to his “Good Will Hunting” co-star Matt Damon. “What do you owe a guy who does that? Everything. May you find peace my friend. #RobinWilliams,” he added. Matt Damon also released a comment on the passing of his co-star: “Robin brought so much joy into my life and I will carry that joy with me forever. He was such a beautiful man. I was lucky to know him and I will never, ever forget him.”

Nathan Lane, Williams’ co-star in ‘Bird Cage’ commented: “I feel I have to say something more than just ‘heartbreaking and shocking’ which everyone has said and I feel as well, but something a little more personal. Thus the following: One day in 1995 while riffing in the character of a snobby French toy store owner, Robin made me laugh so hard and so long that I cried. It seemed to please him no end. Yesterday I cried again at the thought that he was gone.” Sally Field, who starred alongside Williams in ‘Mrs Doubtfire’ said: “I feel stunned and so sad about Robin. I’m sad for the world of comedy. And so very sad for his family. And I’m sad for Robin.
He always lit up when he was able to make people laugh, and he made them laugh his whole life long.... tirelessly. He was one of a kind. There will not be another. Please God, let him now rest in peace.” Williams’ daughter, Zelda, posted a quote by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, the French writer and poet: “You - you alone will have the stars as no one else has them. ... In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night. ... You - only you - will have stars that can laugh.” She added, “I love you. I miss you. I’ll try to keep looking up”.

According to recent statistics, two-thirds of people living with depression never seek treatment, even though 80% with clinical depression who seek treatment, through psychotherapy, medication, or both, do see improvement within a matter of weeks. If you or anyone you know suffers from depression urge them to seek help. Contact counsellors through www.helpfordepression.com

What’s the real story behind the magic of Marbella?

T

he city of Marbella emerged from humble beginnings. During Islamic rule, the Moors fortified the Marbellan coastline by building a string of lighthouse towers. They then constructed a citadel, the Alcazaba, and a wall to protect the town of narrow streets, tiny buildings and a mosque. They called the city Marbil-la, which was most probably derived from a previous Iberian name. In 1485, Marbella was incorporated into the larger region of Spain by the Catholic Monarchs. During the 19th century iron ore was mined from the Sierra Blanca around the area of Ojen. The greater Marbella area was then turned into an agricultural colony and most of the small population returned to farming or fishing as a livelihood. Sweet wines were produced from the vineyards around Marbella. In the late 19th century, the general population of the Marbella area was divided between a small group of oligarchs and the working people. It was a simple, rural life where people depended upon the bounty of the land and the sea for survival.

At the beginning of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), Marbella suffered from much anti-clerical violence and most churches and religious buildings were burned to ashes. Marbella was then seized by Franco’s Nationalist Faction with the support of Italian Fascist troops. The erstwhile peaceful coastal town, with its quiet beauty and warmth, was to become a haven away from war for prominent Nazi Officers such as Degrelle and Jugler. It also became a coastal getaway for friends of the dictator Francisco Franco, like Antonio Giron de Velasco and

Jose Banus. Whether these two gentlemen were admired or abhorred, it is an undisputed fact that they were instrumental in the urban growth of Marbella in years to come. The post-World War II period saw Marbella morph from a quiet village of fewer than 1000 inhabitants to a highly desirable destination for the European Elite. The man credited with the beginnings of this Marbellan metamorphosis was Ricardo Soriano, the then Marquis of Ivanrey. Infatuated with the climate, beauty and simplicity of life on the Spanish Coast, the eccentric aristocrat bought the estate ‘El Rodeo’ in 1943, near what today is Puerto Banus. He later built a resort there called ‘Venta y Albergues El Rodeo’, beginning the development of tourism in Marbella. The name Ricardo Soriano can be spotted all over Marbella town today, most notably in the name of the main road. A second European aristocrat who helped catapult Marbella into the domain of ‘most desired venues’ was Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe, who had a similar love affair with the Spanish coastline. Marbellan legend has it that his father, Prince Max, a cousin of Soriano, drove to Marbella in his charcoal-burning Rolls Royce, to see this piece of heaven for himself. Prince Alfonso then returned to purchase their Mediterranean holiday home, the finca ‘Santa Margarita’, a 180 000 square-metre finca. Prince Alfonso then decided to fashion the finca into a hotel and in 1954, the Marbella Club Hotel opened its doors to guests. This was a substantial step in the development of the ‘adolescent’ town of Marbella into its energetic and exciting ‘adulthood’.

Swinging 60’s

D

uring the heady sixties and seventies, Marbella became a splendid summer playground, a serious rival to the famous Côte d’Azur. Avalanches of aristocracy and swarms of stars descended upon the sun-drenched town in delighted droves. The rich and the beautiful, clad in Pucci prints, mini dresses and bell-bottoms clamoured in their multitudes to be part of the Marbella scene. At that time, ‘Town and Country’ magazine reported on the Marbella phenomenon as the ‘rank upstart of the four-star playgrounds. Loveliest, clubbiest and most

was rumoured that King Fahd could easily spend around 5 million euros a day and his appearance in Marbella was greatly welcomed by locals. Upon his death in 2005, there was much mourning and a three-day grieving period was declared for this ‘Adopted Son of the Municipality of Marbella.’ However, in the sunshine and optimism of this time, the reputation of Marbella was also thrown into a gloomy light. Marbella, and the southern coast of Spain in general, became encumbered with the harsh label of ‘Costa del Crime’. And it was not an entirely unjustified label. Unfortunately the Spanish sunshine and relaxed way of life seemed to draw a multitude of criminals from other countries. An extradition treaty was finally signed between Britain and Spain in 1985, ensuring more cooperation between these two nations in expelling unwanted felons. However, Marbella has still battled over the years to shed this nefarious name. The tarnished reputation of Marbella was then further blackened with the arrival of the ex-president of soccer club ‘Atletico Madrid’ as the mayor of Marbella in the 90s.

historically social.’ It was also during this time, in 1970 to be exact, that the magnificent Marbellan profile was ‘nipped and tucked’ somewhat further with the lavish opening of the luxurious Puerto Banus. The port was inaugurated with a magnificently opulent gala, attended by celebrities, royalty, the rich and the beautiful of Europe. Puerto Banus was the culmination of Jose Banus’ dream of creating a magnificent marina that would be home to the biggest yachts, the most luxurious cars and the most expensive designer shops. In the 1980s, King Fahd of Saudi Arabia built a marble and gold replica of the White House as his palace in Marbella at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars. The Saudi Royal Family spent most summers in Marbella, injecting much needed cash into the local economy. It

Mayor Gil was not one for following protocol and adhering to formalities. So although his administration facilitated a building boom, the existing urban plan was disregarded and bribes became customary in the business of building. Tens of thousands of illegal and inferior homes were built in the town and there was a lack of development in the educational and health sectors to match the building explosion. In 1999 Mayor Gil was convicted of embezzlement of public funds and falsifying documents. After he stepped down, his party stayed in power, but over the years the corruption continued unabated and many more municipal officials, business executives, mayors and deputy majors were also jailed. In April 2006, the Spanish Senate suspended the Marbella City council, the town being run by a committee of auditors until May 2007 when Maria Angeles Munoz of the People’s Party won the vote for mayor. Then came the worldwide financial crisis of 2007–08 which lurched itself at Spain with a mighty thump. The real-estate bubble burst and shattered, and tourism floundered.

FEATURES These days, Marbella is still a beautiful Andalucian town holding onto its traditional Spanish charm. The road to economic recovery has been long and hard, but professionals report that property sales in the Marbella area are on the rise and that tourism figures are climbing enthusiastically. Mayor Angeles Mu単oz and her council are revamping the former sparkle and splendor of Marbella by upgrading the neglected Bajadilla Port and other areas of the old town. For those of us, like so many before, who are infatuated with the climate, beauty and simplicity of life on the Spanish Coast, the magic of Marbella lives on.

LET THE BATTLE COMMENCE...

A

fter a sizzling summer of sporting action where Europeans have come out on top (Germany in the World Cup and Team England in the Commonwealth Games), golf fans this side of the pond will be hoping to add the cherry on the cake by retaining the prestigious Ryder Cup. Being played on the home soil of Gleneagles Country Club in Scotland and with the World Number 1 golfer on their side, the Europeans are strong favourites, however having had the cup snatched from under their noses at Medinah in 2012, the US will be out for revenge…so lets see how the teams stack up, who’s in form and what other factors will play a part in deciding this years winner.

The Teams

Those who have more or less guaranteed their spot on European Captain Paul McGinley’s plane to Edinburgh include Rory McIlroy, Henrick Stenson, Victor Dubuisson, Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose, Martin Kaymer, Thomas Bjorn and Jamie Donaldson. Contenders for McGinley’s three captain’s picks who don’t automatically make selection will be those with strong Ryder Cup credentials and thus Lee Westwood, Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter and Luke Donald will be contenders. On Captain Tom Watson’s US Team, Bubba Watson,

04 38 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02

Rickie Fowler, Jim Furyk, Jimmy Walker, Matt Kuchar, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed, Zach Johnson and Phil Mickelson have qualified automatically. The three captain’s picks are likely to include Webb Simpson, Keegan Bradley and Brandt Snedeker. One notable absentee will be Tiger Woods who confirmed in August that he has ruled himself out of the action until December as he attempts to get to the root cause of persistent back problems.

The Form Guide

On team form alone Europe would walk away with it having won seven of the last nine Ryder Cup battles.

FEATURES However looking solely on recent player form, the last three major winners have come from European shores and Americans have emerged victorious in just six out of 18 tournaments on the PGA Tour since April. Ricky Fowler, Phil Mickelson and Jim Fuyrk are really the only US players with any form heading into the back end of the season.

Other factors

Home advantage for the Europeans will be a major factor, not just from the support of fans but moreover experience on the Gleneagles links style course - not since 1993 have the Americans won on foreign soil.

this century. The similarities pre-tournament have not escaped attention; “I guarantee you there will not be one ounce of complacency on our side,” McGinley told the journalists. “We will not underestimate the Americans one bit.” Clearly one bonus of being the underdog for the US Team will be the lack of pressure, particularly from the press, given their recent form and low expectations – just ask any British tennis player at Wimbledon what pressure can do to you! One final consideration is that Tiger Woods absence may have done the US Ryder Cup team a big favour. Woods is the greatest player of his era, but he has been a poor Ryder Cup golfer, especially when compared with the game’s all-time greats. In fact he has lost more Ryder Cup matches than any U.S. golfer in history, coming up short 17 times in 33 matches.

Another overwhelming factor is the mentality difference between the two teams – the US have the skill to win, but they lack the mentality Europe brings to the Ryder Cup, epitomized by Ian Poulter’s Death Stare as he led the European comeback at Medinah in 2012. US teams want to win, but they don’t hate to lose. Indeed that same year, Justin Rose made a freakishly long putt to tie Phil Mickelson on the 17th hole and ‘Lefty’ smiled and gave Rose a thumb’s up. It was quite sporting but also quite revealing. Poulter would have sneered, turned and marched to the next hole. The Europeans simply aren’t concerned about enjoying “the experience” of Samuel Ryder’s little get-together.

So if the Europeans are so highly fancied, why bother to tune in? Well it can really only be a win, win situation for us this side of the pond – if form follows, we get to watch Europe dominate yet another sport this year and if by any miracle the US put up a good fight, it’s sure to go right down to the nail-biting wire again.

Photography: David W. Leindecker / Cornfield / Mitch Gunn / Shutterstock.com

Then there’s Rory McIlroy – as well as two of the aforementioned majors, he has also claimed the World Golf Championships this summer and US Captain Watson publicly admitted he wished McIlroy was playing for his side. Whilst one player doesn’t make a team, he will certainly spearhead the attack and inspire his colleagues.

The Ryder Cup will be played on 23rd – 28th September 2014 in Gleneagles, Scotland.

Lessons will, hopefully, also have been learned from Faldo’s team of 2008 – the US Team were in disarray and Europe had Padraig Harrington who like McIlroy had just completed the Open – US PGA double. However Faldo’s game plan of using his top ‘heavyweights’ to apply the knockout blow backfired and his opposing Captain’s strategy of investing the responsibility in his whole team prevailed earning the US their only win

ady Gaga is releasing her first Jazz album, ‘Cheek to Cheek’ this month with 88-year-old US singer Tony Bennett. It marks a transformation in the flamboyant singer’s career from electro pop and dance music to a more grown-up, classical style. The album is due for release on September 23rd and will feature a mix of new songs from the duo and remakes of old classics from the likes of Cole Porter and Irving Berlin.

needs to constantly evolve”. She has already taken on dance and pop music through her first studio album ‘Fame’ and ‘Fame Monster’, rock and metal styles were experimented with through her third album ‘Born This Way’ - so her foray into Jazz is just a natural progression of her showing the world the whole spectrum of her musical talents. Despite ‘Cheek to Cheek’ not even being released, Tony Bennett has already indicated there is a likely possibility of another follow-up Jazz album with Gaga to come next year.

We hope the singer has time…

Despite her 27 million album sales, 5 Grammy Awards, 13 MTV Awards and her inauguration in 2014 as “one of the best-selling singers of all time”, Gaga was nervous about recording with him. “I was so nervous to go into the studio with Bennett, I just wanted him to hear I have an authentic jazz voice,” she said. The songs were recorded live with a full band and the album is tipped to be another Gaga hit making machine. To date she has had four top selling albums and has sold 125 million copies of her tracks worldwide. At only 28 years old, Lady Gaga has the potential to join the ranks of The Beatles and Elvis Presley with over 500m record sales.

So why the Jazz Reinvention? Like her musical idol, Madonna, (“There is really no one that is a more adoring and loving Madonna fan than me,” she admits) Gaga is constantly searching for ways to reinvent herself. Not only to keep her adoring fans that she calls ‘the Little Monsters’ perpetually entertained but for her own personal goals. She has been described by friends as “a zany and highly ambitious character that

There is already talk of another self-penned Lady Gaga studio album appearing next year and she has also been confirmed as being the first person to ever perform from space. Yes space. Gaga is flying on the Virgin Galactic Flight to beam her performance to the Zero G Colony festival held in New Mexico in early 2015. Other passengers are having to fork out the $250,000 seat ticket on Richard Branson’s shuttle, while Gaga gets hers in exchange for a song! If Internet rumours are to be believed, the “Marry the Night” singer may even be marrying her long-term boyfriend ‘Chicago Fire’ star Taylor Kinney on the flight. Apart from her musical performance, apparently Gaga wants the trip to be more memorable. “Gaga and Taylor want to make a pledge for life, and think the space flight is too big an opportunity to pass up. It would be typical of her to have the least conventional ‘wedding’ ever,” a source close to the singer told the British newspaper The Daily Star. Watch this space for reports from space next year.

aga and Bennett first collaborated in 2011 on ‘Lady is a Tramp’ which went on to feature on his Duets album. They may seem like an unlikely coupling but the duo exude a unique chemistry and are now firm friends, often seen out together. Gaga’s voice is also exceptional singing jazz, which proves she has the talent to adapt to any musical style.

Stylist is a name we go by

but we also go by many more MEET

MARBELLA ROCKS NEW FASHION STYLIST.

ZAHRA HAS HAD 15 YEARS EXPERIENCE WITHIN THE FASHION INDUSTRY FROM STYLING EVA LONGORIA TO VOGUE COVERS, FASHION WEEKS INCLUDING LONDON, MILAN, NEW YORK AND LA, SUPERPAGEANT CALENDARS, STYLING FOR CANNES & MUCH MORE! SHE IS ALSO A RESPECTED STYLIST AND PERSONAL SHOPPER FOR THE RICH AND FAMOUS HERE IN MARBELLA.

I have been called so many things. I’ve been called an image consultant, style consultant, personal shopper and stylist. I don’t bother correcting anyone when they call me any of these names because there really isn’t a proper term to describe what many of us in the profession do.

H

owever, there are some subtle distinctions which you should be clear on. While I for one could call myself all of the above, typically, image consultant is a very broad profession. People with very public careers, like politicians and celebrities, hire image consultants who work with a team to help shape the public image of these folks, especially when something goes terribly wrong. Additionally, many image consultants are trained and qualified in the area of etiquette, public speaking, media training and other areas of visual communication. However, not all image consultants specialise or are required to have training in any of these areas. Image consultant is a broad term that can have many different meanings. Personal shoppers are not stylists, typically. Personal shoppers usually focus solely on the shopping aspect of a client’s needs. They usually don’t do at-home appointments, closet edits or anything beyond helping a client shop. This is only a fraction of what a stylist can do for you. Personal shoppers can either work for a store or independently. They also can be hired for things beyond fashion, like shopping for gifts and other non-fashion items. Style consultant is another tricky term, simply because many retailers have started calling their sales associates style consultants. This irks me beyond belief because usually a

04 54 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02

FASHION sales associate in a store isn’t trained beyond doing typical sales associate things - like ringing customers up, stocking the floors, selling and cleaning out dressing rooms. Style consultant is a made up term that had no meaning in the retail world but some personal stylists use the term style consultant in lieu of stylist. When I started my career I used the title Style Consultant but abandoned it once the term was usurped by retailers and online fashion sources.

What are the stylist’s credentials? If I had a nickel for every time I heard that someone decided to become a stylist because people told them they always dress well, that all their friends ask them for fashion advice, or because they’ve had a passion for fashion their whole life and that becoming a stylist seemed like the best way to gain entrance into this profession, well, I’d be a rich woman who would never need to style another woman again. It takes a whole lot more skill than being a well dressed friend’s go-to fashion expert to be qualified to style others. Now I’m not saying that a successful stylist has to have two decades worth of fashion training, to be a good one. However, what I am saying is that a stylist should have a respect for their profession and a desire to learn beyond the basics of good fashion sense. This is not nearly enough to be qualified. Even I, who wanted to leave my fashion design career and start working as a stylist, went back to school and took classes on image consulting. In addition, please be very cautious of any stylist who merely has a media presence and no qualifications beyond that. Just because a stylist creates a pretty blog of outfit photos or gets sponsors to make them look qualified doesn’t mean that they have any experience. In this day and age it is very easy to pull the wool over the eyes of many consumers. Which leads me to my next, very important, point.

It’s about you, not about them A good stylist often has a media presence, but not all do. Speaking for myself, I’ve done television appearances as a style expert, I write a blog, have written articles for major magazines and websites and have been quoted in tons of major publications as an expert. However, while my media presence may make me visible, I keep this world and my private client world very separate. In fact, there

are some clients who hire me who have no idea who I am publicly and some don’t even know that I’ve written fashion blogs or that I have ever been on TV. When I work with a client, it’s about them, not me. Stylists have to earn a living and we often do it in many ways. Some of us get spokesperson roles, monetize our blogs, write for other publications, and more. Stylists who have a presence like this aren’t bad and all of us have to do what we have to do to promote our businesses and create multiple income streams to sustain. In addition, when a stylist does become well known, media and sponsored opportunities come quite naturally. However, I have met so many “style experts” out there who are all flash and absolutely no substance. Here they are giving style advice having never once zipped a woman into the back of a dress. Just be careful. While media and stylist work can go hand-in-hand, a good stylist may not necessarily always be the one who is constantly on TV.

Services that stylists offer Like the fact that stylists can go by many different names, the services that a stylist can provide can vary. I am an all inclusive stylist, meaning that I will do everything from style development, shopping with clients, closet

FASHION edits, color analysis and outfit styling sessions. One thing I want to make very clear is a stylist is not an organiser, unless they claim to be one in their credentials. While we often come in to help you weed through your closet and give you ideas on how to better manage the clothing, don’t welcome us in to your messy closet expecting us to organize it for you. Yes, some closets that I’ve worked in have been outrageously disorganised and have taken multiple hours to cull through, but if you are looking for someone to come in and clean your closet but not necessarily advise you on style, consider an organiser, not a stylist.

Regardless of the services that a stylist offers, they should be presented to you in a professional manner and the stylist should have enough sense and skill to know what services are right for you and how to either package or present how to move forward. This goes back to my point about a stylist running themselves a business. When you call on them to inquire you should feel like you are calling a seasoned business professional, not an inexperienced person who seems to be winging it. If you’ve been staring at your closet and can’t find anything to wear, are worried that your professional image isn’t getting you where you want in your career or are in transition and feel that your look needs an upgrade, it might be the right time to hire a fashion stylist. Yes, it can be an investment, but never once has a client told me it was a waste of money. In fact, in the end, they usually wind up saving thousands of Euro’s because of the style direction they have received. As you begin your research for your own stylist, I hope these tips and my advice will help you. Always remember, a good stylist will respect you, their skills and their profession.

Why you should

hire a stylist? Learning how to dress for your body type - and knowing what’s appropriate for different occasions - will help you dress to impress at any event. This will give you the kind of confidence that turns heads and allows you to be more visible both personally and professionally.

T

hink about it: if you’re in line for coffee behind a hottie but you feel frumpy in your outfit, would you have the confidence to start a little small talk conversation? Not likely. And who knows where that conversation could potentially lead… It’s you, only better. If you’re working with the right stylist, they will bring out your inner style; tweaking what you’ve already got so that it’s still authentic, but much more polished and pulled together.

T

he 426 metre high Rock of Gibraltar was created around 200 million years ago when the African tectonic plate collided with the Eurasian plate.

Since then the Rock has been subject to centuries of conflict. For instance, the Muslim’s invasion of Europe began in Gibraltar when the Moorish commander, Tariq Ibn-Ziyad, captured the Rock. After over seven centuries of Gibraltar being under Moorish control it was then taken back by the Spanish in 1462. Then with Dutch help, English troops seeded Gibraltar in 1704. Finally under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, Gibraltar was handed over to Britain, and although there has been many attempts by Spain to regain control of Gibraltar, it has proudly remained British. The history of Gibraltar is largely reflected in the language used there today. Gibraltarians tend to speak a mixture of Spanish and English, together with some original words of their own. For example, the word ‘shuni’ means cute, and they have given multiple meanings to the English word ‘heavy’, which they use in replacement of words such as ‘loads’, ‘deep’, ‘very’ and so on. They call their language ‘Llanito’ and despite the languages low profile, there even exists a Llanito dictionary.

he Rock’s caves also serve as a prominent part of Gibraltar’s history. The Rock houses over one hundred caves, such as St Michael’s Cave, Gorham’s Cave and Leonora’s Cave. It has been said that when Spain tried to re-conquer Gibraltar in 1704 around 500 Spanish troops climbed the Rock and spent the night in St Michael’s Cave. Furthermore, during the Second World War the cave was made into an emergency hospital. In fact, there have been recent findings in Gorham’s Cave, where researchers have discovered tooth marks on pigeon bones which date back to the Neanderthal times. These findings mean that the Neanderthals, who lived in Gibraltar for almost 100,000 years, fed on pigeons. Therefore, adding evidence to the existing theory that the Neanderthals

did not only hunt large mammals. For example, the Neanderthals living in Gibraltar also left tooth marked bones from seals and dolphins. Today however, the caves serve as a huge tourist attraction. This may be due to the mysterious legend that the Rock is linked to Africa by an under-sea passage, which supposedly ends in Leonora’s Cave. It has even been argued that this passage is how the Barbary Macaque monkeys arrived in Gibraltar. The monkeys are also a huge tourist attraction as there are over 250 living within the Rock of Gibraltar. Being the only free-toroam apes in Europe and having no fear of humans, these cheeky apes have been known to steal food from

O

ver all, it is no surprise that every year on the 10th of September the locals of Gibraltar gather together to celebrate their home. This is an allday event which has been named National Day, and it is a celebration of Gibraltar’s freedom and sovereignty. National Day was sparked by the 1967 referendum, where for the first time Gibraltarians voted on their sovereignty. As a result, 99 percent choose to remain British, whilst only 44 people wished to be part of Spain. Usually the celebrations involve a concert held in Casemates Square where the local dancers and singers perform, and at 1pm around 30,000 red and white balloons are let lose in Piatza, each balloon representing one of the 30,000 individuals living in Gibraltar.

04 70 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02

any passing member of the public, and are often seen as far from the Rock as Casemates Square. Coming down from the Rock itself, there are also many areas to explore. For example, the King’s Bastion leisure centre is often a popular site which includes a cinema, ice skating rink, arcade, disco and several bowling alleys. There are also numerous nightclubs and bars open in the evenings, such as All’s Well and Latinos situated in Casemates Square. In addition, the locals are blessed with the variety of food Gibraltar has available. For example, various places serve traditional Spanish cuisine, whilst there is also the well-known Pizza Hut and Pizza Express allocated in Gibraltar. In fact, Gibraltar’s a haven for expatriates who live in Spain as it is full of English products and places that are unheard of in Spain. Therefore, providing the English with a sense of “home from home”.

The balloons themselves are not only a symbol of freedom and liberation for the Gibraltarians; they are also a spectacular sight for both locals and tourists to enjoy. In addition to the balloons, the locals also dress in red and white as they are the national colours of Gibraltar, which you will find on the flag of Gibraltar.

Over all, Gibraltar’s Mediterranean climate, beautiful beaches, caves and people make it a wonderful place to visit. Therefore, it is no surprise that many have chosen to move there. For example, at the end of 1999 when electronic access to the financial markets was introduced, countless independent traders took up the opportunity to move to Gibraltar. This resulted in Gibraltar becoming hugely involved in trading, and although the world’s economic market has recently resulted in many leaving the profession, there is still numerous

small financial trading companies established in Gibraltar. The Trading Room is possibly the largest of these, offering electronic access to markets for independent traders. However, the gaming companies are still thriving in Gibraltar. In fact there are around 15 gaming companies allocated in Gibraltar. Some of which transferred from other countries, for example, 888. com arrived in Gibraltar in 2002 from Antigua. This is largely due to the fact that Gibraltar is one of the few places where it is realistically possible to achieve a gaming license. In addition, many of the gaming businesses are currently flourishing because of the fact people are able to access online gaming from the comfort of their own home. In fact, people can game anywhere at any time on their mobile or tablet. In other words, it is the convenience of the gaming world that allows it to flourish.

Beauty is also quite a prominent aspect of Gibraltar. For instance, every year families and friends get together to watch Miss Gibraltar. In fact, the winner of Miss Gibraltar 2009, Kaiane Aldorino, also won Miss World and as a result Gibraltar was recognised on the map for the first time. On a smaller level there are numerous beauty pageants active in Gibraltar for a variety of different age groups, and over 4 beauty salons offering a wide variety of treatments are also allocated in the area.

Photography: utcon / Shutterstock.com

However, (luckily) what Gibraltar does not share with England is its weather. In fact for such a small destination, Gibraltar surprisingly has six beaches and many waterfront restaurants. These can be enjoyed throughout the year, since Gibraltar’s Mediterranean/Subtropical climate gives the lucky locals dry hot summers and only mild winters. Consequently, making the annual average temperature of Gibraltar 18.4 degrees Celsius.

HAIR & BEAUTY

Laughter lines are no laughing matter. In youthful skin there is an abundance of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, which give volume, support and suppleness. As the skin ages the natural support structure weakens resulting in lines, wrinkes and skin laxity – which rob the skin of its youthful appearance.

O

ne of the best solutions for erasing these lines and folds is replacing the lost structure with immediate volume. One of the best new products on the market is Radiesse, a dermal filler that once injected into the skin stimulates the production of collagen and plumps up the skin so these lines are diminished. It also helps to correct contours of the chin and jaw line and create profound cheekbones for a younger look. Oscar winning actress Sandra Bullock, who turned 50 this year, swears by Radiesse fillers and as you can see she doesn’t look a day over 40, so something has to be working.

Although be warned the syringe is twice as big as a normal filler syringe, because it contains 1.5ml of product, twice as much as a normal filler syringes. Radiesse has become popular on both men and women aged anything from 30 plus. It’s also become popular on hand rejuvenation, which is very often a tell tale sign of someone’s age. Radiesse has also been awarded the Anti-Aging and Beauty Trophy for Best Filler in 2014 by the American Medicine European Congress (AMEC) and doctors claim continued use will mean avoiding more drastic invasive surgery later in life.

Radiesse also has the added benefit of being the longest lasting semi-permanent filler on the market, with some patients witnessing the plumped skin lasting a minimum of a year and maximum of two years. Dr Helena Benson, director of the Advanced Beauty Clinic, in London, Moscow and now Marbella, swears by Radiesse. “Not only is Radiesse longer lasting, it supports the skin tissue better than any other product I’ve used, it softens naso- labial folds and lifts cheekbones.” Radiesse is also free of animal products and toxins and contains the non-harmful Calcium Hydroxylapatite suspended in a gel carrier. Once injected, unlike Botox, the effects are noticeable immediately. Over time the gel is absorbed and the body metabolises the Calcium leaving behind only your natural collagen and firmer looking skin. Dr Helena has noticed a massive uptake in dermal fillers at her clinics. “Of the 120 different fillers on the market Radiesse is by far the most popular because it delivers such long lasting results.” It is also mixed with an anaesthetic so it’s painfree.

AS MARBELLA ROCKS NEW RESIDENT FITNESS EXPERT, EACH ISSUE WE WILL BE COVERING ALL WALKS OF FITNESS LIFE FROM SPORTS AND WELLNESS RIGHT THROUGH TO COMPETITION BODYBUILDING. Open a magazine or surf the net and you will see healthy bodies throughout the pages. You’ll see supplement and miracle pill ads along with diet fads and routines. Lots of people buy into this and shell out lots of cash on Fat Burning products in the hope they can achieve their dream bodies and boost their self-esteem. This month I will be reveal all you need to know about these “Miracle Pills”.

B

efore we start I have to emphasise my view that your body is capable of anything. We have a close relationship and if you treat your body right, it will reward you no end in return. This is no more true than with our diet and nutrition but also with what supplements we decide to shell out on and throw down our necks. PEETS TIP: If you’re looking to buy a fat burner, chances are you have to search through thousands of products, jargon and fancy ads. You need to pick out a well known but not over hyped company. Do some research and remember, sometimes you get what you pay for. OK, before even searching for a fat burner there are a few things you should know. A “Fat Burner” is not a miracle pill that will help you lose weight from the comfort of your couch. For results they need to be used with a solid diet and workout routine. Treat them as an extra boost. I had a girlfriend that used to take (expensive) fat burners with coffee before work and swear that they helped her to lose weight. In reality it’s the fact that she starved herself by eating

HEALTH & FITNESS one small meal a day for 2 weeks, this ending with her passing out at the beach one day. I also had a friend who would swear by his Thermogenic* FB’s, but then went on to admit that he actually believed it a was placebo and welcomed it saying “If a placebo helps me work harder and burn fat, then I’ll pay money for it”. Not a point that I agree with personally! *The term Thermogenic refers to a supplement that increases your body heat, thus burning more energy (calories). PEETS TIP: Like any supplement, fat burners can be abused. Some popular and proven FB ingredients such as Ephedra have been banned as some high profile abusers unfortunately lost their lives. Regulate your use and stay safe.

What to look for in a fat burner 1. Caffeine 2. Green tea (my favourite) 3. Taurine 4. Yohimbe 5. Guerana extract What are the alternatives? If thermogenics aren’t right for you, here are some of the best alternative fat-burning supplements on the market. L-Carnitine If burning fat during a workout is your priority, first you need to mobilise it. L-carnitine is an amino acid that transports fatty acids into the mitochondria – our internal power plants – to produce energy. Take a single dose of 500-3000mg before your workout to ensure that you transport the maximum amount of available fat for fuel during exercise. It’s especially useful if you’re training, fasting or on a low-carb diet where fat oxidation is already maximised.

Green Tea One of the best natural fatburners around, green tea can give your metabolism a jolt. It’s also packed full of antioxidants and has been linked to the prevention of everything from heart disease to Alzheimer’s. Drink it instead of regular tea or diet soft drinks for a huge variety of health benefits. Phosphatidylserine Anyone training intensely is likely to be under some serious stress. The stress hormone cortisol, which is responsible for fat storage, is secreted in high amounts as a result, but phosphatidylserine blocks its secretion. This allows you to recover quicker, burn more fat and build more muscle. Take it after your workout or in the evening, especially if you’re training at high intensity or particularly prone to elevated stress levels.

FOUR of the best natural fat burners Grapefruit How they help to burn fat: Researchers at Scripps Clinic in California found that eating just half a grapefruit before each meal can help you to lose weight, up to half a KG per week, even if you keep your diet exactly how it is now (assuming that you don’t eat junk food 3 times a day). Anything that helps lower insulin can help people lose weight and grapefruit is one of those foods. How to work them into your diet: Peeling and segmenting is the most obvious way to get the goodness out of a grapefruit. Try cutting it into chunks and adding to a spinach salad or simply grab a spoon and eat as is, if you can handle the bitterness.

HEALTH & FITNESS Almonds How they help to burn fat: Eating a handful of almonds each day, alongside a healthy diet plan is a quick and simple way to burn fat according to research published in the US International Journal of Obesity. Participants in the study who ate almonds on a daily basis for a period of six months found that they lost 18% of their body fat. Those who followed a diet with the exact same amount of calories and protein but swapped out almonds for an equal number of calories in complex carbohydrates (like bread) only lost 11% of their body fat.

How to work them into your diet: It’s chocolate. Do we need to tell you? Just try not to eat too much of it, kind of defeats the object.

How to work them into your diet: The perfect at-your-desk snack, grab a handful of these if you fancy a little nibble, they can be quite addictive. Alternatively, chop them up and add them to your morning porridge. Pears How they help to burn fat: A bit of a forgotten fruit. A study by the University of Rio de Janeiro revealed that people who ate three pears per day consumed less calories each day and also lost more weight than those who didn’t. They’re very rich in fibre and will help you to feel fuller for longer, keeping you from overeating. How to work them into your diet: Be sure to keep the skin on them as it holds most of the beneficial fibres. Pears make a great addition to a leafy salad, especially when combined with a bit of blue cheese. BOTTOM LINE Chocolate How they help to burn fat: Ha ha, yes I said chocolate. DARK chocolate, and other foods that are high in antioxidants have been proven to help prevent the build up of fat cells in the body, a precursor to obesity and heart disease, this is according to new research from the Taiwanese Journal of Food Chemistry and Agriculture.

There is no substitute for hard work, knowledge and dedication. This coupled with a solid diet plan and weight training program (yes ladies don’t be scared, muscle burns fat) you should shift the unwanted weight in no time. However if you need that “extra push” then perhaps it’s time to add a fat burner to your daily routine.

by Tracy Lee Champagne and sparkling wines have been around for centuries and the process in which they are made is key to their flavour. You start with a highly acidic base wine, add carbon dioxide and hey presto you have a smooth, balanced Champagne or sparkling wine.

Delicate, bubbly, fresh, exciting and the master for all occasions! You can’t beat a glass of bubbly! Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay are the primary grapes in Champagne. Two black and one white you may note! Carbonation is from méthode champenoise — a secondary fermentation directly in the bottle.

these days as compared to other sparkling wines. Made from the Glera grape and artificially carbonated, Prosecco is low in alcohol, at around 11 %. Superb for the waist line! The flavour of Prosecco is intensely aromatic, fruity and crisp- pear, white peach and apricot. It has no complex secondary aromas like Champagne, but most are meant to taste fresh, light and comparatively simple.

The term “Champagne” is used to refer to wine produced exclusively within the Champagne region of France, from which it takes its name. Other good sparkling wines are made around the world, such as Spain, Italy, South Africa and Australia. Delightful and prone to less of a dent in one’s pocket…

T

he French believe Dom Perignon, a monk living in Champagne in the mid-17th Century, invented Champagne. Then the widow ‘Veuve’ Cliquot developed a process to clean the sediment from the wine. This is called riddling. It removes the cloudiness of the wine without removing the bubbles. Now the Champagne was clear and sparkling; how we know it today.

While I tend to drink Champagne on special occasions, I find myself drinking Prosecco more

Cava, on the other hand, is made in exactly the same method as Champagne. However, different grapes than Champagne give the earthy, citrus flavour. Consistent, fine bubbles and a range of dry brut to sweet dulce are available. Fantastic quality and a varying range of competitive prices. A great choice if you enjoy bubbly and always a fine substitute for a toast! Try something new- Salut!

Surrealism, Statues and Salvador Dalí

ccentric Spanish master, celebrated surrealist artist and sculptor Salvador Dali is not someone normally associated with Marbella, however a stunning permanent collection of his sculptures can be found in the town along the picturesque Avenida del Mar and at the entrance to Puerto Banus. The imposing three ton statue Rinoceronte vestido con puntillas (Rhinoceros dressed in lace) sits on the Cristamar roundabout at the entrance to Puerto Banus and was donated to the council in 2004 to celebrate the centenary of Dali’s birth. Dalí created the sculpture in 1956 following the filming of his surrealist movie ‘La aventura prodigiosa de la encajera y el rinoceronte’. Take a stroll along the Avenida del Mar, the main walkway between the town centre and the Paseo Maritimo, to see 10 more of Dali’s sculptures. Each of these has a name plaque adorned with Dali’s signature, although there is some doubt about whether they are, in fact, originals or copies. Start your walk from Alameda Park where you will see mythological Greek hero Perseus beheading Medusa. Continue walking towards the sea where there is a statute entitled Gala Gradiva (Gradiva being the nickname Dali gave his wife). Carry on to view the statues of Mercurio, Trajano a Caballo and Gala Asomada a la Ventana (Gala at the window). The final line-up of Dali works include Caballo con Jinete Tropezando (Horse and rider stumbling), Elefante Cosmico (Cosmic elephant), Mujer Desnuda

Ciara Phillips, a Canadian who lives and works in Scotland and incorporates craft and design in her work

James Richards, a Welsh artist living and working in London who uses film archives and still images

Tris Vonna-Michell, whose installations include spoken word live performances and recordings

oris Marjot is a master painter who creates modern murals and abstract art for both inside and outside the home in all sizes, colours and on any theme. Working all over the world, but mainly along the Costa del Sol for the past 20 years, Joris’ speciality is in his use of old techniques such as frescoes and Tromp L’oeil. His last project was the restoration of a ceiling at Castle Vouzeron in France. The French phrase Trompe L’Oeil means ‘fool the eye’ and this is exactly what Joris achieves when he adds another dimension with his special artistic techniques to flat walls. No matter how big or small, Joris can turn any space into a dream world and his paint effects can transform your home from the ordinary into the extraordinary. If the mural is for inside the house it can be made on thin linen so it can be removed if needed. Joris and his team collaborate with interior designers, real estate companies, builders and architects to create a beautiful and personal environment for their clients.

on’t worry, it’s not as concerning as it may sound. They aren’t necessarily looking for dirt on you or for negative things - reasons not to hire you. They are in fact looking for positive activity, good online engagement, bright ideas. It’s a way to get to know you, the way you work, think and present yourself. It’s a great way to showcase yourself in this day and age. So therefore it’s very important that you’re putting the right message out there. When it comes to social media and job-hunting you need to take a moment to think about the ‘you’ that you are showing to the rest of the world. The number one social media tool for your professional career would probably have to be

LinkedIn. As a networking tool for career and contact building it really can’t be beaten. Yet recent studies have shown that other sites such as Facebook, Google+ and even Twitter are also playing vital roles in this arena. With this in mind here are few top tips for keeping on track with your online activity: LinkedIn Make sure your profile is searchable and complete; employers are more likely to engage with you if you have a full career history and presence. Don’t be afraid to ask previous colleagues for recommendations when you move on to a new role. Approach them quickly whilst your presence is still fresh in their mind and be prepared to do them the same favour by recommending them in return.

There have been many articles recently on the importance of your online presence and how today’s employers are not only using the traditional CV to make decisions on whether to hire you but are also sussing out your online activity and checking out your personal profiles.

CAREERS Facebook Avoid being overly negative or controversial. Resist the temptation to have a good old rant - keep a positive attitude. If you want to keep this part of your life separate from work then don’t be tempted to ‘Friend’ colleagues (or worse your boss) and keep your privacy settings tight. However a recent survey suggests that a high proportion of job-hunters are now using Facebook as a job search tool. With that in mind you may want to use this for your own benefit, just ensure that you are keeping it professional.

observational, do not over promote but instead ask questions and offer up information that your followers will absorb and that key people in your field may wish to retweet and engage with.

So whilst these sites can help to greatly assist you in your job search beware that negative activity on your part might hinder your professional progress. Do yourself a favour, take a minute to look through all of your accounts and profiles that form your online history. Are you really presenting yourself in the best possible way both personally and professionally? Is there anything you can do to improve, negative things that you need to clear up, delete or rethink? Google+ Share your best content and connect with influential people by adding them to your circles. Grow your network and focus on connecting with relevant professionals and cultivating these relationships. Ask questions relevant to your industry to invite feedback from those in your arena and to help get yourself noticed.

Think of social media and online activity as an asset and make the most of it. Present the best ‘you’ that you possibly can. Who knows who might be looking and just where it might take you! Don’t be tempted to blast your latest aggrevation all over the internet. Be yourself but be thoughtful. Keep it positive, professional, engaging, be creative and most of all present something to be proud of.

Twitter An instant form of self-expression and engagement, Twitter can be a fantastic tool for reaching people quickly and for connecting with industry leaders in your field. Again it is important to avoid being overly negative or offensive in any way. Keep it sharp and

FANCY A CAReER IN

THE PARTICULARS

T

oday I sit down with Jack Matthews, Duty Manager at a major restaurant chain in the West-End of London and an experienced and committed member of the bar and restaurant industry. We talk the highs and the lows of working in a role that demands a great deal of your time with long hours and often tricky clientele! What are Jacks tips for dealing with the ups and downs and what does he enjoy most about his role?

THE SCOOP

J

ack made the decision to try out life in this industry 8 years ago after leaving a previous role in the charity sector. It’s an area he had always been interested in and he felt it would be something he could excel at and enjoy. It’s an industry that demands commitment and a high proportion of your time as it can require you to work long and sometimes unsociable hours. Yet it’s something that Jack is passionate about so we join him today to find out how he made the transition into this career and his tips and tricks for making it a success.

PERSONAL FRAMEWORK Q: What is your current role and what are your responsibilities? I am currently Duty Manager for a major restaurant chain

96

MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 04

based in Leicester Square handling the entire Management for whichever restaurant I happen to be in charge of at the time, I work on a relief Management basis at present depending on what restaurant in the chain needs the assistance. My responsibilities include everything that a Management role entails. I will be there for the full day from opening to closing taking care of all staff queries and issues - overseeing up to 30 staff at any one time, handling all deliveries and ensuring we do our utmost to obtain complete customer satisfaction.

Q: What drew you to working in the hospitality industry? I kind of fell into this industry having always enjoyed being the host even as a young child! I had worked previously in the charity sector for The Rainbow Trust. I enjoy helping people and doing my best to provide them with the best service and cater to their needs and I think this skill has been present throughout all of my job choices and my career path.

Q: How did you get into this industry and get the role you have now? I was looking for a change in roles and had a keen interest in training as a Butcher, a bit of a change I realise, but something I had always been interested in. I was introduced to a family friend who owned a local Butchers with a view to getting onboard with that career. However he also owned a restaurant. When we met it was decided that I would help out on both fronts. As things got going the restaurant picked up immensely but the trade at the Butchers wasn’t enough to require me as an extra member of staff so I stayed with the restaurant and things took off from there. I worked in this role for 3 years learning new skills and taking on more and more responsibility before being headhunted to move to a new startup restaurant then subsequently being put in touch with my current company via a recruiter and making the move to London.

CAREERS

SCALING THE PEAKS Q: What are the best bits about your job and what makes it all worth it after a long and busy day? The people - the staff and the customers The environment - happy and buzzy, it keeps you very busy Customer satisfaction – it is always rewarding when a customer comes and thanks you personally at the end of a very long day This job is one of the best and most rewarding jobs when everything is running smoothly!

HITTING THE ROCKS Q: What are the challenges that you face in your role? Dealing with staff issues can be very challenging. Q: What are the bad/tricky things about the industry and how do you handle them? The kitchens are very high-pressured environments – it’s the one job I don’t think I could ever do as it’s so stressful. It can be a challenge balancing the needs of your kitchen staff that are under extreme pressure with the needs and expectations of your customers, especially during a very busy service. It can be a true test of your Management training and skills.

REVELATIONS Q: What would you like to do in the future with the experience you have gained so far? Next I aim to become a General Manager with the ultimate goal to then move onto being an Area Manager overseeing a number of restaurants within the same group. I also love the idea of coming up with my own concepts and ideas for the environment I am working in so progressing to a more senior point where I can have that kind of input or finding a role or venture that allows for that kind of creativity would be fantastic. Q: Do you have any funny stories or situations that you have found yourself in (in your working life) that you can share with us? This job provides daily laughter. Every day there are at least 2-3 things that take you aback, be that odd queries from customers or strange staff behaviour! You’re working with people after all and they can be very unpredictable but it always makes the day more enjoyable.

Q: What are your personal tips and tricks for success in your role/industry? A tip for dealing with tricky customers – empathy and understanding even at the most awkward of times. You can’t take things personally and if you learn this then you can always provide great customer service. Rise above the little things and don’t let them bother you.

DIRECTION AND ADVICE Q: What has been the most important thing you have learnt whilst working in the role you are in now? Anything can happen – and everything does happen! Every day is a surprise so you have to be adaptable. Q: What have been the biggest surprises? In my first few weeks in my current role I broke a lot of records for sales, which was a fantastic feeling and a happy achievement in such a new environment. Q: What advice would you offer to someone thinking of getting into hospitality? What are the biggest things to consider? This industry requires you to commit to working long hours and it’s not always easy. There’s a lot of hard graft, late nights, working weekends - you have to have a passion for the role and build your life around it. Q: Are there any major no, no’s – pitfalls or situations you would tell people to avoid? Be selective as to the type of restaurant you want to work in. Everyone is different so work out what works for you. Fine dining, gastro pub, fast food chains etc. – they all offer a different working environment and will teach you different things. If you are going to spend so much of your time there you have to be focusing on the right area for you and the direction in which you want to go. I know it might seem like an odd point to make but it’s very important to consider the location as well. If you are going to be working long hours and until late at night you must make sure you are able to commute quickly and safely to and from your job otherwise you are just causing yourself a lot more hassle. Travel is a big issue to consider. If you’re ever thinking of setting up your own restaurant or hospitality venture then you need the right experience - it’s hard work, very expensive and very challenging. Many people think they can take that step and venture into the industry without that knowledge behind them. I’m not saying don’t give it a go but be aware of the immense challenges that it will pose. THE FINAL SWEEP: Expect long hours and a need for extreme patience but also enjoyment and satisfaction at the end of the day when all has gone to plan and your customers walk away with smiles on their faces. A great look into a key industry - if you’re considering taking this path then I’m sure that Jacks tips will come in very useful

What´s TRENDING

This summer in London has seen an endless number of exclusive events. One of my favourites was Selfridge’s spectacular culinary affair called ‘Meet the Michelins’. As part of their campaign, ‘Meet the Makers’, Selfridges held a series of exclusive dinners created by some of the UK’s most talented chefs, including some of the top Michelin-starred chefs. Guests were given the opportunity to taste some of the most inspiring, unique and signature dishes. The £75 ticket ensured guests between 5 and 10 courses. It was a lavish event with some of the most exquisite food, a true culinary delight. The glamorous Shard collaborated with Doing Something, an exceptional dating site, to host ‘Giant Twister at the Top of the Shard’. On Wednesday 6th August, guests were invited to London Bridge for an adventurous night involving a giant game of Twister. Tristram Shackerley-Bennett, the popular Inflatable Church host, compared the night. Upon arrival, the Twister singletons received a drink courtesy of The Duppy Share in order to loosen them up and get them ready for a fun-fuelled exciting night. Doing Something claim “Dating’s more fun when you’re upside down and have your elbow in a stranger’s face!

V Festival, held on 16th August in Chelmsford, was one of the hottest tickets this summer. From Paolo Nutini to Lily Allen, Rudimental, The Killers, Tinie Tempah and Sam Smith, V Festival had an incredible line up. With a diverse range of music, festival-goers were in for a treat. Justin Timberlake was one of the first to take to the stage, which certainly delighted fans. An all-male Acapella group from Oxford University, ‘Out of the Blue’ have gone viral. These talented boys uploaded a YouTube video of themselves singing and dancing to a mash-up of Shakira’s most notorious songs. Not only are they musically and comically talented but judging by their video they are also noble, as this stint was all for charity! They hoped to raise £1,000 for the Helen and Douglas House children’s hospice in Oxford. Their performance went viral that it even caught the attention of Latino legend Shakira. She tweeted “hey @ootboxford we LOVE you’re a cappella Shak medley!” What lucky boys!

eceister Square was again a celebrity spectacle this August. A-listers from Sylvester Stallone to Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, Wesley Snipes and Antonio Banderas were in attendance. The red carpet royalty were there to promote their new film ‘The Expendables 3’. The protagonist Barney and his team, ‘the Expendables’, come face to face with a ruthless arms dealer Conrad Stonebank, played by Mel Gibson, who is determined to destroy this powerful team. A film full of action and trepidation.

Dublin native Danielle Romeril got her masters from the Royal College of Art in London. Then there is Faustine Steinmetz who makes every piece by hand. Hong Kong born Ryan Lo cut his teeth at Charles Anastase. Last but certainly not least, Claire Barrow got her BA in Fashion at the University of Westminster. ant to know Miranda Kerr’s beauty and fitness secrets? She revealed her morning routine to Hello! this summer, which is sure to be spreading like wildfire round London. She swears by drinking a warm glass of water with half an organic lemon in it every morning in order to kick-start the digestion process for the day. Apparently this is a good ritual for productive exercise also. Miranda’s secret to her flawless skin is clearly her careful diet and her own beauty range KORA Organics, which keeps her looking young and healthy.

ASTROLOGY

MARBELLA ROCKS ASTROLOGY FORECAST SEPTEMBER 2014

Aries

Gemini

Leo

While the start of the month may see work take over from romance as we cruise towards the final weeks of September you will see love take centre stage once more. If you’ve just embarked on a new romance things could now turn serious while singles may be smitten by someone who initially may appear elusive - but perhaps this is just to pique your interest! You know you love the thrill of the chase - and perhaps they know that too. Play the game. Back to work and you’ll find that any delays in putting career plans into action are now resolved in your favour as success beckons. Someone could boost your credibility in some way and have others looking at you in an entire new light. When it comes to love or business you’re making a big impression now and all that’s ahead of you are green lights all the way.

Start the month by giving some serious thought to your needs over the long term, whether they are financial, physical or emotional. You should be aiming for something lasting now whether it’s a place to call your own or a place in someone’s heart. By getting very clear about this as the month progresses you could see who or what it is you need appear as if by magic. The second half of the month is designed to allow you to express yourself and have fun. It’s a great time to take that vacation and if single, romance could feature. Others may find that their talents are what get them a lot of attention now and could be delighted to discover this is what sustains them in the long term. When it comes to love however, once you get clear about who or what it is you want, you won’t let anything stand in your way

You’re on fire in some way this month, Leo. Expect romance to heat up, to be a trailblazer or alight with ideas that could literally propel you to the stars (or at least get you a lot of attention). Your self-worth should be soaring and hopefully your actual worth is a reflection of this as you could be offered a raise, a new job or a new money making opportunity now. Just take care that you don’t spend it as fast as it comes in - especially on your image. When it comes to what you want you won’t be about to take ‘no’ for an answer whether that’s in business or love. It’s a funny thing about doors - if you keep knocking and they don’t open you can always try the window instead. But really, do you honestly think anyone is in a position to refuse you now? No. Didn’t think so either.

Taurus

Cancer

Virgo

You’re entering one of the best months of the year for love and success in business or a creative venture. If that forever kind of love is on your mind then you need to be on the look out at the beginning of the month and then watch things heat up as you approach the month’s end. However, don’t allow passion to be your distraction when it comes to business ventures which are also favoured now. You need to make your passion work for you - quite literally. Some of you may find yourself in the spotlight in some way this month - and don’t be surprised if others become jealous as a result. They are just revealing their true colours. The month’s end could bring a new job offer or good news around wellbeing or a pet for some of you. No matter what - you’ll end the month on a high note.

You’ll spend the first part of the month experiencing a bit of good old fashioned romance. Nothing crude for you this month. If you’ve not got a muse expect to be exchanging ideas around love with friends and those close to you and don’t be surprised if they undergo a few changes as a result. Your creativity enters one of the best cycles of the year so please put all this inspiration to good use. Looking for love? It could be found in your neighbourhood or even on your daily commute so keep your eyes open. As far as work goes you’ve energy to spare which is good because you can channel some of that into those inspired ideas you’re having. They could turn out to be money in the bank now. What’s not to love about that?

Your birthday season gift from the universe this year has been to see how love and money (or the lack thereof) are intrinsically linked. It’s not about how much money you have right now, but your relationship to what you do have. If you work on that then guess what? Both love and money increase exponentially. Many of you could discover that feeling of universal love and connectedness you’ve been nurturing for a while now spills over into love for an actual person - just be aware you can’t hurry this kind of love as it will unfold in its own time. Good news arrives at the end of the month and this could well be around finances and is a reflection of your new relationship to your money. Love your life this month, and love is what it will give you - in all its various forms, right back at you.

Libra

Sagittarius

Aquarius

Declarations of love may surprise but also may not have the expected result whether you are the one making them, or someone is telling you what they feel. If love isn’t quite up to expectations at the start of the month, then wait as it won’t take long to improve. Your new cycle begins with your birthday this month and with that comes the promise of fresh starts and new beginnings in love or a new opportunity in your career. Spend the first few weeks reviewing the year so far then set your sights high. Have you made three wishes because one of them and perhaps more than one, is likely to come true during the next 12 months. Home matters also feature and if you’ve been wanting to love but have encountered delays - especially due to finances or haggling over lease or contract details, expect these to be lifted. A new you, a new environment and a new year all beckon.

If love doesn’t set you free or lift you higher, chances are you’re just not interested now. Right now you are at the most driven and ambitious you’ve been for some time. It’s fine if someone wants to come along for the ride but you’re not about to let anyone restrict you or drag you down. Some form of reward or recognition could be on its way for you while for some of you that ‘ride’ may literally be a long one as far-off destinations beckon. It’s time to concentrate on those goals and dreams that don’t involve romance after the 23rd when money matters free up and you may see a long or deeply held wish granted at last. Get clear about what it is you want first however and be careful what you wish for now - you may get it.

You’re a lover not a fighter now and relationships could enter an intense phase as you demand more of your lover and connecting on a more passionate and deeper level than ever before. Singles could attract someone who reflects your increased desire for that love that takes you to new heights. Don’t be surprised if someone from overseas or from a very different background to your own is the one who fits the bill. Travel is very much on your mind and if you can’t leave on that jet plane right now, chances are you’re in the process of planning that trip for later. It’s all about desire now as your energy is now directed towards your long term goals and who can help you achieve them. Get out and about and socialise for all you’re worth now as friends bring benefits in more ways than one.

Scorpio

Capricorn

Pisces

It’s not so much what you know, but who you know this month, Scorpio. Work that network and contact list as if you’re looking for a fresh start or new challenge on the job front, chances are you already know the person who can connect you to it. Mentors, colleagues and friends could provide the introduction or the lucky break you seek and it could turn out you are better connected than you ever imagined. You’re in hot pursuit of any money making opportunities now and you don’t have to go it alone. When it comes to romance, something is revealed around a connection at the end of the month. This could have you questioning someone’s motives here or else you see them in an entirely new light because of this. It’s time to turn any questions around your love life over to a higher power and understand that what will be, will be.

Get ready to break free of the mould and to showcase your fabulousness in all its glory. You’ve been experiencing some intense inner changes these past new months. But when this cycle draws to an end you emerge - like a butterfly or a phoenix from the ashes and astound everyone in the process. Don’t be surprised if part of this entails a major makeover or change of image as when we make inner changes, the outer us has to reflect this. Expect strong responses as a result - some of you will adore this (and those who are giving you the adoration) while others just seem determined to force you to conform - but there’s no going back now. New career opportunities could beckon as a result - they are just a reflection of the new you that’s emerged from within.

If clouds have been casting shadows over your love life the good news is they lift this month as misunderstandings are resolved or a new potential love interest appears. If others have written you off as a hopeless dreamer up until now, they may have to eat their words as you become fired up with a determination to succeed and reach career goals which could catch everyone (including yourself) unawares, but especially the competition and your critics. Change is in the air towards the end of the month and if you find yourself in a position where you are negotiating a pay rise, salary or pay out, once again you’ll prove how canny a negotiator you can be - especially when it comes to protecting your own interests and those nearest and dearest to you. If people think you’re a pushover you show them you’re anything but right now.

THE ALS ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE Unless you’ve been living under a rock recently, you’ve most probably seen the web plastered with thousands of videos showing celebs being dunked with ice cold water and thought what on earth’s going on?! Well this craze, known as the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is ferociously sweeping the world by storm.

Anyone who wishes to forfeit the task has to donate an even larger sum of money to help find a cure for the condition. Some of the celebrities who have taken part in the challenge so far are Victoria Beckham, Cheryl Cole, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Tom Ford, Rihanna and Justin Timberlake, to name just a few. However, some celebs have taken the concept and put their own unique spin on the charity challenge. One of these people is ‘Good Will Hunting’ star Matt Damon.

T

he challenge was originally started when former Boston College basketball player Pete Frates had no choice but to quit his love of the game due to developing ALS in 2011. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (also commonly known as Motor Neurone Disease in the UK) is a terminal illness causing parts of the nervous system to become damaged. This causes progressive weakness in the body, usually leading to gradual paralysis and eventual death. Frates recruited teammates and players from the Boston Red Sox and famous quarterbacks Tom Brady and Matt Ryan to do the Ice Bucket Challenge to “strike out ALS” once and for all and raise awareness and money for an amazing cause. Although he didn’t in his wildest dreams realise how viral this Internet sensation would actually become! The rules are simple, prepare your ice cold bucket of water for drenching and most importantly, make sure you have a suitable volunteer to film you in action. Once you have been thoroughly soaked, nominate two or three other people to undertake the challenge within 24 hours, and mention the donation you are making.

04 108 MARBELLAROCKS | ISSUE 02

After being nominated by his celeb pals Ben Affleck and Jimmy Kimmel, Matt Damon found himself faced with a moral dilemma. As the co-founder of Water.org, he couldn’t justify wasting clean water to take part. In order to overcome this problem, he decided to soak himself with toilet water instead (insert image). “This is truly toilet water. I’ve been collecting it from various toilets around the house,” he says as he fills his bucket in the video. I’m sure anyone reading this is gasping in horror at the very idea, but the award winning actor then goes on to poignantly say “keep in mind that the water in our toilets in the West is actually cleaner

than the water that most people in the developing world have access to.”

So this is one definitive example demonstrating that this challenge is not just a superficial Internet craze, it’s a way of highlighting deeper issues within today’s society. Another celeb that’s taken a surprisingly alternative opinion on the charity challenge is Pamela Anderson. The former Baywatch star is a life-long animal rights activist and refused to take part on ethical grounds. “Sorry, I can’t bring myself to do your Ice Bucket Challenge,” she wrote on Facebook. “Mice had holes drilled into their skulls, were inflicted with crippling illnesses, and were forced to run on an inclined treadmill until they collapsed from exhaustion, so I thought instead I’d challenge ALS to stop Animal Testing.”

launched their own Internet trend to raise awareness of the terrible conditions of conflict that they face daily. However, instead of using water - which is a precious resource in the Gaza Strip - they have used buckets of rubble in the challenge. Ayman Al Aloul, the Palestinian journalist, was the first to post a video of the Rubble Bucket Challenge and said, “I have to do something and send a message all over the world about Gaza.” Within 48 hours the video had already gained 2,000 likes on the group’s Facebook page. However, although the Ice Bucket Challenge has already raised over £48million for the ALS Association, Aloul’s motives were slightly more modest. Rather than “material aid”, he urged people to offer their “solidarity and support for the people of Gaza”. So it’s safe to say that this pop cultural phenomenon has reached all corners of the world and has more importantly, raised awareness of a condition that most people were unaware of until now. Remember though, that it’s not all about the novelty of drenching yourself on video, we need to help find a cure so text ICED55 £5 (or other amount) to 70070 to make a difference.

Her thoughts alongside this image of her standing by a swimming pool, brandishing a sign that reads “Stop animal testing” has attracted over 52,700 likes from followers as well as 19,000 shares.
