Mark Spencer MP We have had a frantic time recently in Sherwood, I have been meeting constituents, knocking on doors, delivering leaflets, working locally and dashing off to London to speak in the House of Commons! One key issue that I have talked about a lot recently is public transport. Public transport across Sherwood is something that I have been working on improving since I was elected. Many of you may remember earlier in the year when I embarked on a trip around my entire constituency using only public transport and the difficulties I had, although mainly due to my cameraman not being able to read a timetable! The video is on my website if anyone wants to see it. That experience re-energized my long time ambition to look seriously at what action can be taken to improve public transport in places like Ollerton and Edwinstowe to make it just as good as say Hucknall or Calverton. Well one project I am working closely with government about is the possibility of extending the Robin Hood Line to provide a rail link between Ollerton, Edwinstowe, Mansfield and Nottingham. I persuaded Transport Minister Claire Perry MP to come up and take a look at the Robin Hood Line last month and we had a very positive meeting with the Ollerton and District Economic Forum (ODEF). I think this would bring huge benefits in terms of jobs and bringing investment to the area. The line itself already runs to these places and is used for freight and driver training so what is needed is rolling stock and investment into new stations.
I am keen to represent the views of local residents so I hope to be sending out a survey to every house in Ollerton and Edwinstowe asking for your opinion on this project. This government is embarking on the biggest investment in railways since Brunel’s time and I will make sure that we do not miss out on our fair share of this! Christmas is fast approaching and I will be attending a number of Light switch ons including the Ollerton Christmas Fayre so be sure to say hello if you see me! House & Home Reluctant Gardener: December / January The Frosts are here and the ground is getting harder to manage – so here are some quick things to do in the garden over the months of December and January. General Garden.
Plant tulip bulbs now. Select bulbs with different flowering times to prolong flowering. Put in any winter bedding if this has not been done, like wallflowers. Cut back any herbaceous perennials, lift and divide those that look overcrowded. Take root cuttings of perennials such as poppies, verbascum and phlox. Make sure greenhouse heaters are working ok.
Lawn.
Remove fallen leaves from lawns and borders and compost or bin liner to make leaf mould. Don’t walk on the grass if it is water logged or frozen as this can damage it leaving footprint marks. If the weather is mild, the grass can have a long cut at about 1½” high. When putting the mower away give it a good clean or send for servicing.
Fruit and Vegetables.
Mulch fruit trees and bushes. Remove rotten fruit on the ground around fruit as they can carry infection on to next year. Remove yellowing leaves from Brussels sprouts and support if lopsided. Vegetable garden for next year can be dug over – mix in well-rotted manure as you go. Clean garden canes and store in a dry place for use next year.
Wildlife.
Put up a bird feeder, mixing the seed and fat types attract different species. Keep the birdbath clean and topped up with fresh water. Clean out bird nesting boxes not only so they are ready for use in the spring. Remember birds will shelter in boxes during bad weather. Float a ball on ponds so if it freezes, remove the ball leaving a breathing hole for the fish. Plant native hedging to give shelter for wildlife. Happy Gardening

ere’s hoping that everyone has a great Christmas and now that we are about to embark upon a New Year, it’s time once again to set new goals and targets for ourselves and our families. Many of our children/ grandchildren will have received electrical gadgets such as e-readers, phones and tablets for Christmas. Whilst most children are very “switched on” with all technology, they seem in the main to use these gadgets for playing various games. I am wondering how many of our children/grandchildren will have requested books as a present? My guess (hopefully, I’m wrong) will be not be as many as have asked for some sort of electronic game. The ability to read in my mind is one of the most important skills that we acquire in life. I cannot imagine life without the ability to read. Reading can be a great way to relax, be transported to faraway places, escape the stresses and worries of modern life for a few minutes, learn new things, be informative…… the list is endless. Children from an early age can benefit from becoming familiar with books. The best way to introduce children to books is of course the bedtime story. Many children enjoy the nightly ritual of listening to a story and looking at the many lovely pictures that story books contain. The earlier children become familiar with the look and feel of books the better! Reading to your child from an early age will help your child to expand their imagination, learn how letters and words are formed and will help with writing, spelling and punctuation skills later on. There are a great many popular books that are available in e-book form. If this is the only way to get your child in to reading, then it is a good way to use Christmas electrical gifts and improve reading skills too. Many libraries now loan e-books as well as traditional books. Why not let me know your child’s preferred method of reading their favourite books? Also, please let me know what your child is currently reading. I am anxious to set up a list of popular children’s books currently being read in Nottinghamshire. Security & Safety Get tough on shoplifting
Commissioner Tipping has invested more than £20,000 into proactive work aimed at building intelligence on local offenders and helping to secure detections. He is also working with most major supermarket chains as part of a partnership approach driven towards making Nottinghamshire a more hostile environment for shoplifters. Commissioner Tipping has committed £10,000 of funding towards Police and Business Crime in Nottinghamshire (PABCIN) - a new, privately-run, board which manages and analyses intelligence relating to low-level crime and liaises with shopkeepers and police to share information. He has also committed a further £10,000 from the Prevent funding stream to help fund three dedicated PCSOs to the project to feed information into the system’s database and improve detection capabilities. Early results suggest detections are already improving. The investment comes after the Commissioner funded 20 extra electronic tags specifically for shoplifting prevention purposes, demonstrating how seriously he regards the issue. Commenting on the new measures, Commissioner Tipping said: “It’s a common misconception that shoplifting is a victimless crime. In reality, shoplifting can drive shops out of business, especially small independent outlets which simply can’t afford to absorb these losses into their costs. It also results in higher prices for the consumer – something that impacts on us all.
“As Commissioner, I’m working closely with retailers to challenge the view that shoplifting is ‘inevitable’. This crime costs the economy and taxpayers an awful lot of money and it should never be accepted or tolerated. “I believe prevention is the only answer which is why we’re targeting our work on intelligence-gathering which will help us to stop shoplifting before it happens. For this we need the support of retailers and an ongoing communication channel to build a picture of the risk and threat.” The Force has recently studied the offending patterns of 63 offenders which highlighted the limited benefits of prison, especially where sentences are too short. As a response, the Commissioner is focusing attention on the early part of the offending cycle to stop the offence occurring in the first place. In future, the Commissioner will be working very closely with the Reducing Re-offending Partnership over the way shoplifters are monitored to prevent them from entering shops. GPS tagging can play an important role in prevention work but this requires fine-tuning to enable alerts to be raised as soon as a potential offender enters a retail territory – not when they leave their house. Mobile Phone Safety Abroad Your mobile phone is often a real treasure. You store photos on it on family, friends, holidays and cherished events. Not only may it contact all your personal numbers, but often business numbers with emails from clients on a regular basis. So how come we treat it like an ‘accessory’? Leave them on tables whilst we have coffee, stuff them in our bags or just forget where we left them? They can almost be your life? So what are my top tips for taking your phone abroad:1. Always insure it – I thought travel insurance covered it but NO. Check the deal and if not insure with the service provider, checking it covers you abroad. Some banks offer a ‘package’ as part of your account that covers your mobile phone so might be worth asking. 2. Put a password or a pin on it 3. If your phone brand offers it use a location app – Samsung offer ‘Find my Phone’. After all you may have dropped or misplaced it. If stolen thieves often discard sim cards immediately 4. Report as soon as possible even if it is difficult. Your insurance may need a police report plus someone might have handed it in 5. Always ring your service provider immediately to let them know-see note below 6. Take an old phone with you for emergencies.
7. Always backup your phone to a third party device (PC)
- losing valuable data can be priceless. Only take a personal or Pay-as-you-go phone abroad. Or use an older spare. 8. Download your photos on a regular basis and if abroad use a cyber café or dropbox / skydrive etc 9. Never give your phone to anyone to take a photo – tourists/travellers can be criminals 10. Don’t put the phone in pockets or backpack pockets even if zipped. Keep them as close to your heart as possible - make it difficult for pickpockets. The Robin is possibly Britain’s favourite and most well-known bird with its bright red breast and almost tame (to humans) nature. Both male and female share the same plumage but the juvenile Robin has a brown speckled breast and you will see over the months how this develops gradually in to the familiar red breast we know. Unlike many birds, both sexes sing but the female will stop singing once breeding commences. Robins also sing during the night, especially near street lighting, which has led some people to think they have heard a Nightingale.
The mortality rate of Robins is quite high, especially in severe winters, and about 40% of recently fledged birds will not survive from one year to the next. So, during the next few months do bear this in mind and feed your visiting Robin with its favourite foods. It will love mealworms, cake crumbs and fine gratings of mild cheese but it will also eat sunflower hearts, mixed seed and suet if put out on your bird table. C/O Jean Parrott Make your garden count! In mild winters, Robins can start breeding as early as January and may have up to three broods a year, though two is more normal. Robins are well known for being very territorial. If another Robin encroaches on their territory, they will first posture by showing off their red breast and if this doesn’t frighten the intruder, they will attack their opponent quite viciously, even to the death. How different to the friendly Robin that follows you around the garden while you are turning the soil.

t’s Women’s Business Nottinghamshire, a group of local professional business ladies, recently enjoyed a fabulous networking lunch whilst raising money for our annual, local charity; Southwell Ladies in Pink, supporting ladies with breast cancer. The money raised came through the purchase of stands for a Christmas market held at Mansfield Manor Hotel, Carr Bank Park, Mansfield. The guests enjoyed great networking over a delicious buffet whilst browsing the stands for some great Christmas gifts.
Following lunch Marion and Pat from the Southwell Support Group offered an update into where recent donations had been directed and how the group could get involved. We will certainly be entering their very competitive March quiz. Hayley from Hayley Eleanor Personal Styling delighted the guests with a talk on how to ‘jazz’ up your day office/work wear to go straight to party. With fun tips of simply adding jewellery, a scarf and a change of shoes - away you go for a great look! n theory this is the time of year that nature goes to sleep. In fact it is a time of regeneration, preparing for spring. The winter work schedule of tree felling and planting, cutting back overgrown hawthorn, hedge laying and fence repairs are essential to healthy woodland maintenance. The provision of wildlife habitats to protect vulnerable creatures through the winter months plays a great part in the increase in both numbers and diversity. Tippings Wood has certainly been a huge success story on that score and forms part of the wildlife corridor system to link up the fragmented remains of Sherwood Forest. This is also the time of year when we see some more exotic bird visitors to the site like Waxwings. Let us know what you see. It helps provide an overall picture of how things are going. Do you have an hour to spare, enjoy fresh air, a bit of exercise and an enormous amount of satisfaction at what you can achieve – why not volunteer. Be our eyes and ears and look after Tippings Wood. Blidworth Local News Blidworth Art Club Help Local Author Blidworth Art Club, who meet monthly at Blidworth Library, worked with local author, Helen Dennis,on drawings for possible inclusion inside her new book 'The Tunnellers Two'. Artists were invited to produce pictures relevant to the adventure story - the winning pictures will appear in the new book with the winning artists each receiving a free copy. The Tunnellers and Tunnellers Two are set in and around Nottinghamshire, with the original adventure starting in Blidworth. Remembrance Plaque Unveiled
O
n 9th November 2014, a Remembrance Planter in honour of her son Andrew was unveiled by Mrs Jeannie Cutts & her grandson.
Andrew Cutts was born on 8 January 1987 & was killed in action on 6th August 2006 in the northern Helmand province of Afghanistan. Mrs Cutts & her family & friends have worked very hard to raise the funds for this planter in memory of him. Blidworth Parish Council agreed with the idea and gave permission for it to be situated on the corner of Haywood Oaks Lane & Dale Lane, (used for last 4 years as a flower bed). Blidworth Parish Council were pleased to help with this project as the family & friends have raised £1,500 in the last few years for the War Memorial Garden Trust, which has been instrumental in the Parish Council winning several awards in the East Midland in Bloom Annual Competitions. Work on the project started on 26 October with local builder Nick Taylor laying the concrete base, followed by the granite paving stones. The Planter itself was made by Malcolm Lane & Son from Cropwell Bishop to the design & specifications of the family throughout. Jeannie, her family and friends would like to thank everyone for their assistance and help the in completion of this project, which the family will never forget.
Book review : Coal Dust and Confetti
“A really good poet with the command of English necessary to bring alive these truths about the mining community”. A section of a review by Sally Evans (Editor of Poetry Scotland) on the delightful book ‘Coal Dust and Confetti’ book written by the poet; Sally James. I particularly loved the ‘Coal Queens’ stating these good women should have a crown on their head! I and ‘Coal Dust and Confetti’ bringing in the lifestyle of the wife of a miner. But of course one cannot read the book without trying to understand the life of a man who has to daily enter into a dark pit and I felt the essence whilst reading “Engraved in Coal” The harshness of a reality many may have experienced is harness in the ‘Pit Accident’ and no doubt many a local person will have experienced this or know a family or friend who has. You may even have memories of a tragic loss. A beautifully written listing of poems, by an author who dedicated the work to the memory of her father; Jack Bould who started work at fourteen years of age in the Lancashire Coalfields near Wigan before moving to Blidworth Colliery where he worked for approximately 20 years. COAL DUST AND CONFETTI A bride can be blemished by smut in the sunshine, a silver backed horseshoe be a magnet for fate. Pink flimsy flecked paper will dissolve in the drizzle, but a globule of dust can congeal in the rain. With slippers of satin she trips down a dark aisle, around her slim ankles a glimmer of grime. Specks mingle with love hearts red blue and purple, like the bruise on her arm hiding under her sleeve. Coal cannot sparkle is no diamond in daylight, beneath her white gown curls the kick of a clog. Till death do them part grips a bouquet of lilies, as a veil of white mist descends on her face. Coal and confetti have scattered together, like petals and ashes and roses in flame. Bell Ringers recently rang a quarter peel in Blidworth church, remembering those who fell in the Great Wars and in all conflicts since. This left us all feeling sad and grateful, especially at this time of year! But it isn’t just in November, the Royal British Legion and Soldiers Sailors Airforce Families Association SSAFA work tirelessly all year round across the country helping all those affected by the conflicts. A group of poets who meet at Blidworth Library on the 3rd Saturday of the month. A collection of poems, by these poets and friends of the group who stretch throughout the U.K and beyond its shores, is now due out: Bards at Blidworth and Beyond... 2014 Anthology of Poems. Some members of the group have had their collections published. I am delighted to have published the next book, another collection of poems: Coal Dust and Confetti, by Sally James (daughter of Jack Bould, former assistant manager of Blidworth Colliery). Blidworth Local News Blidworth & District Historical & Heritage Society The Flickering Screen in Ashfield was the theme for the presentation by Trevor Lee at our November 4th Meeting. Trevor was really entertaining with stories of the acts who played, the films shown and the histories of Ashfield’s cinemas. During the break members chatted with Trevor and viewed photos from our archives. Alan Higgins then showed slides of old Blidworth and spoke of how one of the village’s claims to fame is that it had the first society in England that ran on ‘co-
operative’ ideals. The Society’s book (£10+£2.50pp) on the WW1 was available to members and guests. Many photographs are unpublished and there is much to discover about village life 100 years ago. Ravenshead Local News Rotary Club of Sherwood Forest More than just a Walk Well the Walk in the Wood’s this year was again a massive success with so many walkers taking part and the after walk soup lunch being a complete sell out. Over £700 was raised by the event. Ravenshead & Blidworth Rotary member Bob Jackson and his team, bill this event as a fund raiser for international charities, in particular for Rotary International’s ongoing support for Aqua Box. Did You Know Each year hundreds of these Aqua Box’s, are sent to those in desperate need of a supply of “Clean and Purified Filtered Water”. But there’s More Currently Ebola is of great concern to us all. In this respect the writer understands

Collection of your used Christmas trees to be recycled will raise funds to support a terminally ill child in the Mansfield area. For a small donation of £3 to cover cost of fuel and machinery all profits generated will contribute to the this year’s cause. Chippings will be distributed to local homes, allotments and local projects. The Woodman is a small, local business, living in the area.

RCT have already introduced a new Service on Mondays & Wednesdays to help to cover the loss of the 145. Timetables are available in the Library, Health Centre & Post Office. Community Transport would be available to Care Homes, Schools and groups, to enable attendance at the Cornwater Club (social club for older people) and for hire to various events .A fully trained driver will be provided.
Farnsfield Local News Farnsfield & District RBL Bravery thanks – 64 Years on!
“A former sailor who saved his ship during the Korean War and received the Distinguished Service Medal for his bravery has been thanked by the grandchildren of one of his shipmates for saving their grandfather‘s life, 64 years after the event. John Banister, now 86 years old and living in Rainworth, was a Leading Stoker Mechanic aboard HMS Comus when it was attacked by North Korean aircraft on 23 Aug 1950. The resultant damage flooded No 1 boiler room and John’s actions in shutting down the boiler whilst up to his neck in water, allowed the ship to make it safely back to port in Japan, with the loss of only one crew member, Jimmy Addison. The story of John’s bravery recently appeared in the Legion magazine, as he is the current vice-chairman of Farnsfield Branch of the Royal British Legion. The article was read by Commander Charles Wylie, OBE, RN from Fareham, who was a boy seaman aged 17 manning the Bofors guns aboard HMS Comus on the day of the attack. Commander Wylie’s young grandchildren have written to John thanking him for saving their
grandpa’s life, saying “If you hadn’t done that brave thing, we would not be alive or writing this letter to you right now. You are very special and will stay in our thoughts forever. Each year John plants a cross in the Garden of Remembrance at St Michael’s Church, Farnsfield, in memory of Jimmy Addison and he did so again this year.” Trevor Wilds, Chairman, Farnsfield & District Branch (BR0264) RBL

Local Church News A Dog is for Life – Not just for Christmas Every year following Christmas, we are reminded of appalling statistics of dogs given as presents, being rescued by RSPCA and other agencies, because they were quickly abandoned as unwanted gifts, despite us being regarded as a nation of dog lovers! C. S Lewis, in an attempt to explain the wonder of the Incarnation – God becoming man in order to save mankind – wrote these words: “Lying at your feet is your dog. Imagine, for the moment, that your dog and every other dog is in deep distress. Some of us love dogs very much. If it would help all the dogs in the world to become like men, would you be willing to become a dog? Would you put down your human nature, leave your loved ones, your job, hobbies, your art and literature and music, and choose instead of the intimate communion with your beloved, the poor substitute of looking into the beloved’s face and wagging your tail, unable to smile or speak? Christ, by becoming a man, limited the thing which to Him was the most precious thing in the
world: his unhampered, unhindered communion with the Father.” The Apostle Paul wrote of the enormous cost that Jesus paid in order to save mankind, when in his letter to the Philippians he said, “Christ Jesus, who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death, even death on a cross!” Surely, this must rank as the greatest gift of love in all history – and the most costly. If we are rightly appalled by the neglect of Christmas gifts of dogs, surely we ought to, at least, consider our response to God’s gift of love – Jesus Christ – at Christmas. Why not join us at one of the local churches’ Christmas Services and discover more about the wonder of the Incarnation?
