2 Hello from The Sherwood Newsletter Editor: Andy Jones a local resident with a local business

Well I didn’t think we would get such a warm summer so far after the deluges earlier in spring. I love the warm dry days, but gardeners are kept busy each day watering - then there’s a hosepipe ban - then it’s Autumn and more rain - what a cycle.

Competition Win a signed copy of the New book by local historians Dale and John Smallwood. Read all about the book signings and details of the content on pages further in this issue.

If you like history, then there is a new book launched this month on WW1 and Blidworth from local authors Dale and John Smallwood. They have attended signing’s in August at local venues and we have a competition to win a signed copy. See the box on the right to enter and also later in this edition for more details on the book content and how to obtain a copy.

Question: What famous Society had the first branch in the country opened at Blidworth?

After all the worry about road closures, the first set at Blidworth finished early and the Rainworth drainage works are well underway and only giving minor disruption to through traffic.

marathon.media@ntlworld.com

This month you may have noticed we have changed the format again to a clearer print style so everyone can enjoy the articles. Tell us what you think or to give us some ideas for sections to have each month. We do rely upon local news so if you run a club or attend meetings that will interest the readers, please send to me for inclusion (we may edit for size or content style) Photos are also welcome if you have managed an achievement like a special birthday or anniversary etc. I quite fancy a computer alert section for new online security issues etc.... Please support our local advertisers as without them we cannot produce the high quality content for each edition and we value their support of this, your local Sherwood community newsletter. Have a good read.

Andy Jones, Editor

Sherwood News and Information Mark Spencer MP One of my top priorities since being elected in 2010 has been Job creation. Employment is always the key to unlock a better and more prosperous life for us and our families. We are seeing more and more good local companies looking for staff, our people definitely have the skills so let’s get the two together. The government has been doing its part, we have a growing economy, more people employed than ever before and consistently falling unemployment, including youth unemployment. There is still a long way to go and I don’t think the job is over just yet but I think we are definitely headed in the right direction. The latest employment figures for Sherwood show that the number of unemployed people claiming Job Seekers Allowance fell by 503 compared to June 2013 and is 137 lower than in May 2014. This is all good news but there is more the Gov can do, like raising the tax threshold. This is why the point at which you start paying income tax continues to be raised so that you keep more of your hard earned

money than ever before. This government is creating jobs and making sure you keep more money in your pockets. So what can I do? How can I help boost employment in my constituency? Well following the huge success of my jobs fair in Hucknall last year I have decided to hold another, this time in Ollerton. Jobs Fairs are a great way to meet local employers, find out about jobs or training opportunities and network. We have several companies that have already confirmed their attendance and I’m sure many more to come. If you are looking for a job, training opportunity, apprenticeship, or maybe just some advice or guidance on your CV then this is the event for you. Whether you have been unemployed for 10 years or 10 days come along and see what is on offer, you won’t be disappointed! This event will be held at the Lifespring

Dog Groomer Required

Centre on Sherwood Drive in New Ollerton on Thursday 18th September 2014 at 10.00am- 1.00pm. Entry is free as is the Tea & Coffee! An increasing number of people are turning to alternative therapy or holistic remedies either as an alternative or in conjunction with their GP or hospital treatment. Reiki is becoming increasingly popular as it is believe to work on different levels; the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual enhancing everything in life. Reiki is not only one of the oldest healing systems in use and this ancient Japanese method of healing uses energy to balance the body and mind. In fact, Reiki is believed to improve just about any aspect of life, from physical health to emotional well-being to stress reduction and mental clarity. Reiki techniques are used to heal the body, mind and the spirit. It has been proven that Reiki can help people suffering from various major and minor ailments. It is often used as a complementary therapy in a number of hospitals today. It enhances the health care the patient receives in both in the hospital and from outpatient health care providers. Reiki has not only helped patients with physical ailments but also helped those with minor psychological problems as well. 1. One of the greatest Reiki healing health benefits is stress reduction and relaxation, which triggers the body’s natural healing abilities (immune system), aids in better sleep and improves and maintains health. 2. Reiki can help to bring about inner peace and harmony. It can be valuable tool in the quest for spiritual growth 3. Reiki is also renowned for balancing the mind and emotions. Regular Reiki treatments can bring about a calmer and more peaceful state of being, in which a person is better able to cope with everyday stress. This mental balance also enhances learning, memory and mental clarity. Reiki can heal mental/emotional wounds; work through dysfunction In more severe situations, Reiki can help alleviate mood swings, fear, frustration and even anger. Reiki can also strengthen and heal personal relationships. Because Reiki enhances your capability to love, it can open you up to the people around you and help your relationships grow. By improving your capacity for empathy, Reiki may allow you to connect with people on a deeper level. 4. Reiki is also used for relief during emotional distress and sorrow. Reiki may help in the grieving process, cleaning and clearing

emotions whilst preventing them from being so draining.

5. On the physical level, Reiki may help to relieve pain from

migraine, arthritis, sciatica ~ just to name a few. It may also help with symptoms of asthma, chronic fatigue, menopausal symptoms, and insomnia. 6. Reiki has been known to speed up recovery from surgery or long-term illness. For example, Chemotherapy patients who received Reiki noticed a marked decrease in side effects from treatment. 7. Reiki can be an effective way to treat immediate problems, such as physical or mental illness (recovery from surgery, but regular treatments can also improve overall health. By helping to maintain a state of physical and emotional balance, Reiki can not only treat problems, but perhaps even prevent them from ever developing. This article is care of Susan Moss MS RD and offers an insight into Reiki. For any written article related to alternative or holistic remedy the writer can only use the word ‘may’ or ‘can’ in relation to the results of the treatment. However, many of you, our readers and even myself personally have enjoyed and benefited from Reiki. Thanks to Annette at ‘Ultimate Healing’ for helping me through a particularly anxious period and the results were amazing, bringing relaxation and a calmer mind. Please if any doubt consult your GP/Specialist and never stop taking medication without seeing your Doctor. Diane Carter, Chief Editor The Sherwood

Quote: “when giving Reiki, the intention is that the energy given is for the highest good of the receiver, this means that it cannot ever harm because the intention is always pure and good. Another aspect is that healing can be sent into the past as well as the future. This is great for anxiety during exams, driving test, fear of flying or interviews when the receiver can literally feel the calming energy come down on them and help them think calmly and concentrate on the matter in hand rather than worry. A huge benefit of having Reiki has been reported by people suffering from insomnia. Because the energy stills the mind and has a calming effect, most people say that they get a fantastic nights’ sleep after a Reiki session.” Annette Steele Ultimate Healing

hen you use Hypnotherapy to reduce your weight you are changing the way you think and feel about food. Many clients come to us after trying numerous diets, pills and potions, or even starving themselves in an effort to lose weight? “Every time you start a diet you feel deprived and start craving food that you love and you seem to be constantly thinking about whether you can eat this or that. Eventually you break the diet and then the frustration and guilt sets in and once more you’re on the slippery slope back to where you started in the first place. The trouble is, unless you change your mindset around food you’re doomed to fail even though you’re desperate to lose weight consciously.” At the Clem Turner Hypnotherapy Clinic we offer a 5 week long Weight Loss Programme which we have successfully run for 8 years now. We use many different techniques to achieve the client’s goal weight, depending upon what is needed to be done. Owing to the level of concern across Europe about the collapse of bee populations, the European Commission has restricted the use of pesticides which have been linked to the decline in bee populations.

So how can Four Seasons Lawn Care still treat lawns for Chafer Grubs? It is only Provado Lawn Grub Killer that has been banned because it was a liquid product which was available to the public. When Provado was applied on to lawns, there was a danger it could drift on to adjacent pollinating plants if not applied carefully. As a result bees could be put at risk. The treatment we use is a professional insecticide and is a granular product, only available to professional users, which is much easier to target on to the lawn area only, and is far less likely to drift than a liquid product. Merit Turf is a professional-grade product and is not available to the general public. Our employees hold the Certificates of Competence in the Safe Handling of Pesticides required by law to apply this.

T

Sizzling Summer Tan - Quick Tips

o avoid risks when out in the sun and achieve a safe tan, follow these tips.

Exfoliate Your Skin - To achieve the best possible tan outdoors, you must exfoliate before sun exposure. The act of exfoliation removes the dead cells from the uppermost layer of the skin and allows for fresh skin to appear. The removal of dead skin will also allow you to tan more easily because your tan will appear and fade evenly. Wear SPF Sunscreen - Contrary to the beliefs, you can still tan with sunscreen. Sun protection factor (SPF) extends the time you can spend in the sun without suffering additional skin damage. Higher SPF numbers therefore provide better protection against ultraviolet B “burning rays” (UVB) rays.

Do NOT Overexpose Your Skin To The Sun -It is best to tan gradually by dividing your time under the sun evenly to reduce sunburn. Spending a whole day at the beach may give you a tan look for a day but it may very well leave you with sunburns when you leave. 30 min to 1 hour of sun a day allows your body to produce adequate melanin to build for the next time you tan. Wear Your Shades And A Hat -To achieve an even tan, remember your shades and hat. The skin around your eyes is delicate especially to UV rays. Sunglasses labelled “UV absorption up to 400 nm” or “Meets ANSI UV Requirements” will block 99% of UV rays. A hat with a 2-3” brim can protect your ears, eyes, forehead, nose, and scalp all at once while you look stylish getting your tan.

House & Home Crunchy apple and blackberry crumble

This is a healthy twist on an apple crumble recipe. It's made with blackberries; plus muesli, oats and nuts for extra crunch. Ingredients For the filling 900g/2lb apples 350-400g/12oz-1lb blackberries 175g/6oz demerara sugar 2 lemons For the topping 225g/8oz plain flour 175g/6oz butter 55g/2oz demerara sugar 125g/4oz muesli or a mixture of oats, seeds and chopped nuts Preparation method

1. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. 2. Peel, core and chop the apples into small chunks. Cut the lemons in half and squeeze the juice over the apple and mix well. This not only adds flavour but prevents the freshly peeled apples from discolouring.

3. Layer the apples, blackberries, and sugar in a large pie dish 4. Place the flour in a large bowl and then rub in the butter until it resembles breadcrumbs - leave a few lumps of butter so that the topping is not too fine. Add the muesli or oat/seed/nut mixture and the sugar and mix through.

5. Use a spoon to sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the fruit. Bake for 45 minutes or until the fruit is cooked and bubbling juices seep through the topping.

6. Cool for a few minutes and then serve with custard or fresh cream. Recipe care of BBC Good Food Guide visit www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/crunchyappleandblack_7679

BBQ - Summer Sizzling & Safe Barbecue Safety Advice A barbecue should be a safe and enjoyable experience avoid being distracted whilst cooking. To avoid injuries or damage to property, follow these simple precautions:  General Safety -Make sure your barbecue is in good working order. Choose a flat site, well away from a shed, trees or shrubs. Keep children, garden games and pets well away. Never leave the barbecue unattended. Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby for emergencies.  Charcoal Barbecues -Use enough charcoal to cover the base to about 50mm. Use recognised fire lighters or

starter fuel and only on cold coals – never use petrol or paraffin. Don’t put hot ashes into a wheelie bin – they could melt the plastic and cause a fire.  Gas Barbecues -Make sure the tap is off before changing the gas cylinder. Change cylinders outdoors if possible or in a ventilated area and don’t overtighten joints. After cooking, turn off the gas cylinder before turning off at the controls to ensure any residual gas is used up.

Fire Safety in the Countryside Every year fire is responsible for the destruction of thousands of acres of countryside, open spaces and wildlife habitat. Many of these fires are started deliberately but by following a few simple precautions and showing a little extra care, many accidental ones can be prevented:  Dispose of smoking materials properly and make sure they are completely extinguished.

From £275  Don’t leave camp fires or barbecues unattended and extinguish them properly after use.  Clear away bottles, glasses and any broken glass to prevent them magnifying the sun’s rays and starting a fire.  Explain to children the dangers of playing with lighted fires.  If fire breaks out, call the Fire & Rescue Service immediately. When specifying your location, mention any landmarks – perhaps a church or pub – and if phoning from a phone box, stay nearby so you can direct the fire appliances to the scene.  Don’t attempt to fight the fire yourself unless it is very small – grass and crop fires can travel very quickly.

Giving your child access to a variety of reading material at home is one of the best ways to expose them to a wide range of new words to enrich their vocabulary.

opportunities guiding offers in years to come.

As your child discovers new stories and sources of reading material, they will continue to encounter words that they haven’t read before. Exposure to different types of text in different formats will introduce your child to new words in new contexts- words that they can add to their increasing vocabulary.

Guiding gives girls and young women in Blidworth their own

Your child’s learning doesn’t have to be limited to just books. Exposure to different types of text in different formats will help them develop both their vocabulary and comprehension skills. Even daily tasks that you perform can pose as fun new reading opportunities for you and your child to explore. For example, you and your child can read the instructions on the back of a box, or you can sit together and write a letter or a postcard, or you can both simply read signs on the street or at the shops.

When reading something new together, make sure that you point out and explain any new words, including their meaning and how they should be pronounced. Later during the day, you can ask your child to see if they remember all these words, challenge them to use the new word in a sentence. A great school holiday idea to expand your child’s reading is to take them to join the local library! Going to the library can be a fun experience to be shared by all the family which is away from the home environment. With many Primary schools preparing to implement the new national curriculum in September, these tips will prove invaluable in helping your child get to grips with vocabulary and comprehension skills that will be required of them. www.brighterfutureseducation.co.uk

Security & Safety Thieves Love Warm Weather! With the start of the school holidays and the hot weather it’s easy to forget that open windows, property such as mowers or bicycles left outside and unsecured garden sheds provide a welcome invitation for the opportunistic criminal. Please, take a few sensible precautions to prevent you from becoming a victim of crime. Also the hot weather seems to drive an increase in noise-related anti-social behaviour as people enjoy themselves outside. It’s important that we show some consideration for our neighbours – no-one wants to stop anyone enjoying themselves, it’s just that one person’s party can be another person’s pain. I know that many youngsters feel there is not enough to do in the holidays, something which is often cited as the reason for anti-social behaviour. However, there are

Dealing with doorstep callers With the arrival of spring there is likely to be an increase in doorstep callers offering to carry out gardening work such as tree cutting, selling of compost also roof and driveway cleaning and sealing. Whilst these callers may well be genuine callers, we’d like to remind residents to carefully consider accepting work from cold callers who knock on your door. If there are problems with the goods they sell or the work they do you may struggle to contact them again, you could end up paying more than you thought you had agreed to, and are likely to have little recourse. You should always ask to see some identification from callers at your door. Genuine callers will normally make an appointment first and carry identification from their company with their photograph on. Most organisations have a telephone number that you can call to verify the representative’s identity. We would usually advise not to use the number stated on their card as it could be false, and suggest looking up the company in the telephone book or on the internet. Reports of a company who cold called a Local Mansfield resident at the door and told him he was entitled to a free boiler replacement under the government Green Deal initiative has been revealed as bogus. The resident was asked to pay £299 for an energy assessment survey and told they would get this money back! The resident became suspicious after not being able to get through to the company and reported the matter to Trading Standards. You can find out if a trader you are dealing with is Green Deal approved by calling the Energy Saving Advice Service on 0300 123 1234 or visiting their website at: http://gdorb.decc.gov.uk/consumersearch

Film Review: A

walk among the Tombstones Release Date Friday 19th September 2014 Starring: Liam Neeson, Dan Stevens, Boyd Holbrook, Marina Squerciati, Sebastian Roché and David Anzuelo Based on Lawrence Block’s bestselling series of mystery novels, A Walk among the Tombstones stars Liam Neeson as Matt Scudder, an exNYPD cop who now works as an unlicensed private investigator operating just outside the law. When Scudder reluctantly agrees to help a heroin trafficker (Dan Stevens) hunt down the men who kidnapped and then brutally murdered his wife, the PI learns that this is not the first time these men have committed this sort of twisted crime…nor will it be the last. Blurring the lines between right and wrong, Scudder races to track the deviants through the back streets of New York City before they kill again

Book Review: Gray Mountain By John Grishom Rlelease 23rd October The Great Recession of 2008 left many young professionals out of work. Promising careers were suddenly ended as banks, hedge funds, and law firms engaged in mass layoffs and brutal belt tightening. Samantha Kofer was a third year associate at Scully & Pershing, New York City’s largest law firm. Two weeks after Lehman Brothers collapsed, she lost her job, her security, and her future. A week later she was working as an unpaid intern in a legal aid clinic deep in small town Appalachia. There, for the first time in her career, she was confronted with real clients with real problems. She also stumbled across secrets that should have remained buried deep in the mountains forever. Amazon £9.99 ISBN-13: 978-1444765618

I wandered lonely as a pigeon That floats on high o’er Sutton Precinct, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of busy shoppers; Beside the café, beneath the clock, Chatting and rushing in the shop. Continuous as the tills that ring Ten pence off the Galaxy bar, They stretched in never-ending queues Along the conveyor belt: Ten thousand I saw at a glance, Tossing their heads in impatience. The kids beside them danced, but they Out-did the parents with glee; A child could not be but gay, In such a waiting company: I gazed--and gazed--but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought: For oft, when on my perch I spy In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon my beady eye Which is not the bliss of solitude? And when my heart with pleasure fills, I coo along with them all. I wandered lonely as a pigeon That floats on high o’er Sutton Precinct, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host of other pigeons; Beside the bus, beneath the shelter, Cooing and bobbing with their mates. I wandered lonely as a pigeon, Boo Hoo! © Gillian Baguley

What’s On - Sponsored by AV4HOME Life in Blidworth during WW1 – A New Book

L

ocal authors, John and Dale Smallwood have written a book which looks at life in a Nottinghamshire village. 'Blidworth and the First World War' tells how life in the Parish of Blidworth, that at the time included Fishpool, Rainworth and Blidworth Bottoms, changed during the first thirty years of the 20th century. The book commemorates the local men who sacrificed their lives in the 'War to end all Wars'. It also tells of how the war might have been avoided if a local shooting accident had ended in a fatality. We glimpse life as it was through the eyes of bootmaker,

Sam Clarke and hear stories about the daily life of our Parishioners. We learn that Blidworth had the first Cooperative in the country. We introduce the reader to 'Plough Bullocking' and learn the rules of 'Husky Fusky'. We also tell of the revival of the unique 'Rocking Ceremony' in St Mary's Church of the Purification. The men who returned from

the war faced great changes and some experienced severe hardships. The village became less dependent on agriculture as the mining industry developed and changed completely with the sinking of Blidworth Colliery. The book is richly illustrated with photographs of Blidworth Parish and its people, many of which have not been previously published.

The book was launched at Blidworth Library on 4th August, the 100th anniversary to the day of when the war started. The book will be on sale for £10 and the authors were available to talk and sign copies if required. The library is open from 9 am to 12.30 PM on Mondays. Other August library dates where the book and the authors will be available are; Saturday 16th at Kirkby in Ashfield 9am to 1pm. Also Sunday 24th at Blidworth Welfare for the Horticultural Show & Fair 12pm to 5 pm. The book can also be ordered via dalesmallwood@ntlworld. com

Castle Cycles

Urban cycling: Top 10 safety tips

Cycle Repairs & Servicing Parts Sold

Ensure your bike is roadworthy Regularly check your brakes and tyre pressure. Don’t ignore any strange noises, vibrations, or jumping gears – they usually indicate a problem. Learn how to control your bike Learn how to shift your body weight when making an emergency stop, be able to swerve safely, use your gears properly, control the bike while looking directly behind and confidently ride with one hand. On the road, ride with at least two of your fingers on your brake levers. Don’t be afraid to use roads Cycling in parks and on cycle paths is great fun, but being able to use the road gives you the freedom cycling was intended to give you. Cycling on the pavement, even considerately, is against the law. If you are nervous about cycling on the road, get training. Know how to position yourself in traffic

Collection & Delivery Available* Ride away from the kerb, never in the gutter, and at least a cardoor’s width away from parked cars. Ride in the stream of traffic when you can match its speed. If you have to ride close to slower moving traffic or parked cars (for example on a narrow road), do so slowly so you have time to react to hazards (such as an opening door). Remember to look behind you Check behind yourself frequently, especially before changing position on the road. This attracts the attention of drivers as well as ensuring that you know what is happening around you. Ensure good road communication Communicate your intentions with hand signals and correct road positioning. Don’t signal without looking behind first – it may be unsafe. Know how to approach junctions

Cavendish Walk, Bolsover, S44 6DB

www.castlecycles.co.uk * Subject to conditions

Arrive at junctions in the middle of your lane, whether you are turning left or right or going straight ahead. This prevents dangerous overtaking from traffic behind. At traffic lights the least safe option is to undertake (on the left), so either wait your turn or consider overtaking (on the right) to get to the front before pulling in to the stream of traffic when it starts moving. Know how to approach roundabouts Arrive at, and move through, roundabouts in the middle of the most appropriate lane. Be aware of large vehicles Never cycle on the kerb side of any large vehicle at a junction

– if you’re in the driver’s “blind spot”, they won’t be able to see you if they turn left. Always maintain enough distance behind or in front of any large vehicle so the driver can see you. If you can’t see the mirrors, the driver probably can’t see you. Get some cycle training If you are unsure about any of the points above, go on a training course. Check with your local authority for any subsidised or even free training opportunities they might offer. Six Tips for Successful Networking for a new career move Always remember that you’re asking people for information, not a job. Networking often goes bad because job seekers try to ask friends and strangers about specific job openings. This puts people in an awkward position – after all, if they don’t know you, they’ll naturally hesitate to recommend you for a job. ●● Start with people you know, then expand to their acquaintances and finally strangers after the process becomes second nature. It’s important to practice on your friend before moving on to people they suggest. You shouldn’t avoid networking with strangers just because you have no automatic “in”

with them. Contact everyone you can, whether it’s by email, social media sites like LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, or even over the phone. You never know who’ll have the most useful information or take an interest in you. ●● When you reach out to a contact, have in mind what you want to say, but don’t obsess about it. While the delay built in to most social network communication makes it easier to “think before you speak,” some contacts you meet will prefer the immediacy of phone calls or instant messaging. ●● Recognize that you’ll have good and bad days. People won’t respond to your messages, or decline your requests to chat. A few experiences like this, and you may begin to

resist reaching out to key contacts for fear of being rejected. But don’t give up! Persistence and a sense of humor are key to successful networking. ●● Maintaining your objectivity, when you’re on a job search roller coaster is easier said than done, especially if you are trying to do it alone. A good support system of friends, fellow job seekers, a career counselor, enjoyable activities etc. can be really helpful. ●● If you find yourself putting off networking because you just hate doing it, try to come up with a plan. Promise a friend you will make 10 contacts a week, and give them reports on your progress. Dedicate time just for networking. Tell yourself you will connect with 12 people before you do any other activities. Then reward

yourself for sticking to your plan. ●● Prepare a specific topic for each discussion. Do some research on the company, industry or career of your contact. Put together a list of questions, including some that deal specifically with their background. Ask for advice on your job search, and the names of other professionals who would be beneficial to connect with. If your contact refers you to other people, keep in touch about how the new connections are going. Your contact will feel gratified that their contacts were useful, and will admire you for seizing available opportunities. c/o Taunee Besson, CareerCast.com

A Friends group would meet anything from 4 times a year to once a month and sometimes fund raise themselves for items such as benches and signposts. Typical roles within a Friends group are Chair, secretary, (the treasurer is still active) committee members and practical task volunteers. Also it would be good to have someone who is used to using social media for promoting the group too. C/O Gill

At the moment there are no volunteers prepared to keep the Friends of Tippings Wood. Greenwood are organising task days so look out for information on the entrances to Tippings. Are you available to help to stop Tippings Wood becoming neglected? In the meantime a big ‘Thank you’ to those community minded folk who litter pick and even clip back the occasional overhanging branch. Please report motorcycles, anti social behaviour or anything you think is not as it should be to the Police non-emergency number, 101. They may not attend but it is important to log every incident so we can have a clearer picture of what is needed Contact: Mark Guy – 01623 822944 or 07917 836088. Garden Bird of the Month - The Dunnock I often feel sorry for this small bird as I think it is often overlooked, possibly because it is a grey and brown bird and appears drab compared to many other garden birds. It is a robin-sized bird and if you look closely you will see that it isn’t as drab

as it first appears. It has a blue-grey head and breast, and has streaky brown and black markings on its back. People often confuse it with the House Sparrow but one defining factor is its bill. The House Sparrow has a thick bill which is used for eating grain and large seeds. The Dunnock’s bill is fine and is better suited to small seeds, insects and spiders. To confuse matters even more, it is sometimes called the Hedge Sparrow. It is, however, a member of the Accentor family and is not related to the House Sparrow. Its habit is also quite different to that of a House Sparrow which goes around in noisy groups. Instead, the Dunnock moves furtively amongst the undergrowth, constantly flicking its tail and wings whilst

Please Take Your Litter Home

it searches for food. One interesting fact about the Dunnock is that it is a common host bird of the Cuckoo. When a female Cuckoo lays her eggs in other bird’s nests, her egg is normally a similar colour to the host’s eggs but in the case of the Dunnock, this doesn’t seem to apply. For some reason, the Dunnock fails to spot the difference between its egg and the Cuckoo’s egg and it continues to feed and rear the young cuckoo. This doesn’t seem to affect the Dunnock population as it can have two or three broods a year. Do look out for this small unobtrusive bird as it creeps around the undergrowth in your garden. Blidworth & Ravenshead PPG

This is a small group of patients who represent the patients of the local GP Practice at Blidworth & Ravenhead. All patients are welcome to attend our meetings to learn more about how important patients contributions are to GPs’ in helping them understand their needs in respect of healthcare locally. So as a PPG we try to give local people a voice on healthcare locally. We discuss ways of improving provision at the practice and we are involved in increasing patient’s awareness locally about improving healthcare or managing particular conditions. This year we will have our own newsletter. That will be circulated around the villages and in the surgeries. So keep a lookout. In addition to the PPG we have a virtual Patient Reference Group. What is this? You may ask. Well, patients sign up and their names are held by the practice as someone they can contact at times for information about performance and developing practice. This is done via the practice web-site – www.blidworthand ravensheadsurgery.co.uk, or face to face, on the telephone or by post. So everyone can be involved if you wish, and have your say about future developments in healthcare. Our PPG is currently active in organising various events in the

In addition to this over the following year we will be having open events, these will be sessions where a specialist will speak about a particular condition. These will cover heart problems, cancer, pain management, diabetes and so many more. So if you want to know more, come along. Again keep a lookout for notices about these events. Blidworth Local News Blidworth & District Historical & Heritage Society Our speaker for the July 1st meeting was Ron Stammers. Ron’s subject was Victorian and Edwardian Seasides and he soon proved that there was very little that he didn’t know about the subject. Our audience was fascinated by his stories of how holiday makers were expected to sleep four to a bed, two one way and two the other way and of how everyone ended up with flea bites. In fact if you didn’t go home covered in bites, people didn’t believe you had been to the seaside at all! National newspapers carried advertising for Blackpool saying they had the largest fleas of any resort; this was in order to sell their fleas to travelling flea circuses!

Ron also told us how people were taught to swim, first, by pushing them under water and then in the second lesson throwing them in horizontally. Apparently there is no record of what the third lesson was! Ron earned a great round of applause from our very appreciative audience. During the coffee break members and guests were invited to view another selection of photographs from our archives and browse the library books. After the break, Alan Higgins spoke about his own family history. This included his grandfather’s bravery in the first World War, family

connections with U. S. state governors and the first billion dollar company in the States. He emphasised how interesting discovering family history can be. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, 5th August, when, besides our main speaker, John and Dale Smallwood will introduce their new local history book, Blidworth and the 1st World War. Packed with information that may come as a surprise to many, it has a wealth of photographs, many never published before. Copies can be purchased for £10 on the night or ordered through emailing dalesmallwood@ ntlworld.com As usual, the meeting will be in the Function Room of Blidworth Welfare, Mansfield Road, Blidworth. Our next three meetings will be 2nd September - Peter

Hammond - On the buses. 7th October - W Taylor - The Dukeries Railway Routes We start at 7 pm and would be very grateful if everyone could be seated by that time. Ample parking is available and new members are always welcome; just turn up on the night. There is normally a small charge of £2 which includes refreshments. If you have any photographs of the village and its people that we may copy and add to our archive we would love to hear from you. It’s a new Rotary year and past President Mike Lee’s final duty was handing over to new president Dr Raj Chandran. (photo below) One of Mike’s last duties was to chair a committee meeting on July 1st that resolved how £3100 from the our charity funds raised during the year would be distributed to his chosen charities; Cancer Research, John Eastwood Hospice, Notts Lincs Air Ambulance, Rainbows Children’s Hospice, and Cornwater Club. We were also very pleased this year to have been able to help many other groups and individuals within our community. One such group being the children of Blidworth Oaks Primary School. A group of Blidworth slimmers have lost 63 stones over six weeks and have presented Dr Peter Rose, Chairman of the Cornwater Clubs, with a cheque for £198.00. The group of slimmers who attend the Wednesday Slimming World sessions raised the money through a sponsored slim, with coffee and cake groups and by collecting small change. The groups’ leader, Caroline Dobson, said “Raising money for community charities is close to our hearts at Slimming World Blidworth Group, and we think it’s something special to be involved in. I’m really proud of my Super Slimmers for pulling together to help the Cornwater Clubs whilst losing weight, getting healthier and having some fun at the same time!” The Cornwater Clubs, which

support older people from the North Nottinghamshire area and have members from Blidworth, aim to prevent social isolation. Chairman Dr Peter Rose, said “The slimmers have achieved a fantastic result both in terms of their weight loss and the support they have given our charity. The money will be used to continue to provide a variety of stimulating activities for our members to enjoy together, helping to alleviate the social isolation of being at home alone” The Cornwater Clubs run four days a week and offer a range of stimulating activities plus a two-course nutritionally balanced lunch. The success of the event meant that we raised over £3,000 for the benefit of serving and ex-service personnel. Our next ‘event’ was at Rufford Country Park where we had a stall at the ‘Trent to Trenches’ weekend which had WWI as its theme, with re-enactment groups giving us an idea of what life was like for the troops in 1914. A total of over £170 to the Poppy Appeal was raised over the two days.

On 6th July, at the memorial site and 70 years on to the day, together with Nick Linney, DL, a contingent of cadets from 1260 Squadron Air Training Corps and 40 other members of the public, we attended the annual service for the crew of a Halifax bomber which crashed near Farnsfield in 1944 on its way back from a raid on the V1 site at Croixdalle in France, killing all 7 crewmen. For the first time the service, which was conducted by Rev Peter Graves, included the Canadian National Anthem in memory of the one Canadian member of the crew, the bomb aimer Flight Sergeant John Godin.

The month of August sees the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War 1. It was called the ‘Great War’ and was hoped to be the war that would end all wars. Sadly that has not been the case, we only have to look on the news or read a newspaper to discover more conflicts are happening. Yet we must not forget. As many communities gather together to mark this anniversary it is important to note that this is not to glorify the past. We must not forget because there were great sacrifices made, we must not forget because there are lessons that we badly need to learn. The Jewish people to this day remember God bringing them out of slavery in Egypt over 3,000 years ago and as they remember they are also ‘remembering’, That is coming back together as a
