Sherwood News and Information

Mark Spencer MP It has been a really busy time for us recently. I managed to secure a visit from the Transport Minister, Claire Perry, and took the opportunity to show her the Mickledale Lane Junction and to discuss with her the possibility of extending the Robin Hood Line to Ollerton and Edwinstowe. On the Robin Hood Line extension, I think it is important to be very clear about what I think should happen. First, I think it would be such a massive boost to the local area if we could have passenger train services linking Ollerton and Edwinstowe to Mansfield and Nottingham. This would bring huge benefits in terms of creating jobs and bringing investment to the area. I have been involved in trying to achieve this since being elected in 2010. We got one step closer with the visit from Claire Perry, and I had a meeting with the Ollerton and District Economic Forum (ODEF) in Ollerton to discuss it further. The line itself already runs to these places and is used for freight and driver training so all that is needed is rolling stock and investment into new stations. The members of ODEF were able to put their questions to the Minister and the atmosphere was really positive. This Government is currently spending more on improving our railways than any other Government since the Victorian era and I will continue to push to ensure that we do not miss out on our fair share of this! Because the Government is electrifying huge swathes of railway across the UK this means that diesel rolling stock, such as carriages and locomotives, will become available very soon. This will allow us, in a cost effective way, to

operate a service. Obviously additional money is needed for upgrades and stations, and I can assure you that I am applying pressure to the Government to keep up this momentum. While Claire Perry was in the area I also took the opportunity to show her the Mickledale Junction by Limes Café. As many of you will know the large road works have now finished and the Junction has been ‘improved’ – I use the term loosely. While improvements to this junction are welcome, personally I think it needs to be completely redeveloped, and that the current plans don’t solve the problem and are a waste of money that could be better spent. That is why I will do as I have always done and lobby Nottinghamshire County Council to do a proper job on the junction. They have done Rose Cottage and others, and now let’s do Mickledale Lane and get it sorted. As always if you would like to chat to me or have any issues or queries please drop me an email at mark.spencer.mp@ parliament.uk or call my office on 0115 968 1186.

House & Home Reluctant Gardener: November Lawns.

Continue to keep the lawn free of fallen leaves. Don’t walk on the grass if it is water logged or frozen. Walking on frozen grass can leave brown footprint shaped marks. If the weather is very mild and the grass is still growing you can cut it with the mower blades set high. When finally putting the mower away give it a good clean and spray oil on any moving parts. Fruit and Vegetables. Mulch fruit trees and bushes. If not already done put grease bands round both the trunk and stakes of fruit trees to prevent female moths climbing the trees and laying their eggs. Do not leave rotten fruit to lay on the ground around fruit trees as they will carry infection on to next year. Remove yellowing leaves from Brussels sprouts and stake up if they look liable to falling over. Snap the leaves on cauliflowers and bend them over the curd to protect them. Vacant patches in the vegetable garden can be dug over, weeding and working in well-rotted manure as you go. After digging you can either apply, mulch or sow a green manure such as winter rye. Clean garden canes and store in a dry place for use next year. Flower Garden. Plant tulip bulbs ready for spring. Select bulbs with different flowering times to prolong the flowering season. Put in any winter bedding as this is the last chance to plant wallflowers, bellis, etc. Remove stakes or supports as herbaceous perennials die back.

Cut back herbaceous perennials and lift and divide overcrowded perennials. Put fallen leaves in the garden in a separate compost bin or even a black bin liner to make leaf mould. Take root cuttings of perennials such as poppies, verbascum and phlox. Stop feeding pond fish and float a ball on the water so when a pond freezes over you can remove the ball and leave a breathing hole for the fish. Wildlife. If you don’t have a bird feeder, consider putting one up. Mix the seed and fat types to give variety and attract different species. Nijer for goldfinches, mixed seed for robins, peanuts for tits and fat balls for starlings. Keep the birdbath clean and topped up. Also keep it free from ice as water will be scarce for wildlife. At this time of the year birds will love trees and shrubs that still have berries such as pyracantha, berberis and sorbus. If you don’t have any berries then now would be the time to consider planting them ready for next year. If you have a bonfire for Guy Fawkes night please check that it is free of wildlife such as hedgehogs just before lighting it. Clean out bird nesting boxes ready for spring. Happy Gardening

New arrangements for support of Children when parents separate

T

here have been many changes in family law recently not least in the way that the Government now approaches the issue of child maintenance. Child maintenance is financial support that helps towards a child’s living costs when the parents have separated. It is an obligation and therefore must always be considered when there are relevant children of the family. Sue Leadbeater

Guinness World Record Success. The young engineers club at Joseph Whitaker School, Nottinghamshire took three machines they built to a Rolls Royce test track last month. Their Redshift model set a new world record of 478.1mph but that was then beaten by the Insanity machine, which reached speeds of 509.83mph and 556.28mph.

It has always been the case that parents are encouraged to try and agree an appropriate level of support for their children. Since 1990, if they did not agree, either parent had the option to go to the Child Support Agency where a simple formula was applied based on a percentage of the payers net income, depending on the amount of children being supported and the amount of overnight stays. In view of a multitude of difficulties it was announced last year that the CSA would be abolished. No new cases have been taken on by them since November 2013. The Government now wants parents to agree their child maintenance arrangements amicably or face a charge. Joseph Whitaker School Young Engineers The new scheme is the Child Maintenance Service. The main difference is that payments are to be calculated on gross pay rather than net and there will be fees to be paid. The paying parent will have to pay a 20% fee added to the calculated maintenance payment and the receiving parent will pay 4% to actually get the money. Any parent registering with the service will be charged an up front fee of £20. The addition of the Child Maintenance Service now means that there are three types of child maintenance schemes in existence and two authorities dealing with them. This is inevitably going to cause some confusion and it remains to be seen how smoothly the transition from one scheme to another will take place. Separated parents can use an on-line child maintenance calculator to work out how much maintenance payments would be if the scheme were used. This can be used as the basis for an

agreement but does not prevent parents from agreeing a figure which is below or above what the CMS calculation would be. Child support and child arrangements generally when parents separate can cause feelings to run high and therefore be a cause of dispute and it is recommended that you seek legal advice at the earliest opportunity to put yourself in the best position to reach an agreement. We offer a free initial half hour assessment meeting for anyone seeking such advice. Sue Leadbeater, Andrew & Co LLp, 01636 593111 or sue.leadbeater@andrew-solicitors.co.uk

Security & Safety HATE CRIME VICTIMS ASSURED OF SUPPORT Victims champion Chris Cutland has stressed the importance of victims of hate crime reporting all incidents to the police and to seek support. The Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner for Nottinghamshire was adamant that people should not suffer in silence but come forward. “This is a horrible crime that can cause deep distress and fear. I want to assure anyone who becomes a target that they will be taken seriously by the police, and that there is help available,”

she said. “Both the police and victim support services understand how damaging hate crime can be,” she went on. “They are keen to do all they can to put a stop to it and, at the same time, help those on the receiving end to recover.” Her comments underline the efforts of National Hate Crime Awareness Week which commenced last month. She pointed out that raising awareness of hate crime was a crucial step towards tackling its under-reporting, and ensuring that victims have the help they need. Nottinghamshire Police said that they will be launching their new operational guidance for police officers in the near future.

Hate crime is defined as any incident which constitutes a criminal offence perceived by the victim or another person as being motivated by prejudice, hate or intolerance on the grounds of disability, gender identity, race and ethnicity, religion or belief and sexual orientation. Incidents

might involve physical attacks to someone or their property, threats such as offensive letters or phone calls, cyber bullying and verbal abuse or insults. Contact the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, County Hall, NG2 7QP, 0115 967 0999 ex 801 2005, or email nopcc@ nottinghamshire.pnn.police.uk

To all residents.

Christmas time is soon approaching and with it comes the act of Burglary and theft. This year please be prepared and ensure that you start to look at your home security. Your local PCSO’s have a few crime prevention ideas along with property marking equipment. If you require such marking then please contact your local PCSO whose details are on the Nottinghamshire Police’s website who will be able to mark any property from lawnmowers, power drills to bicycles. Anyone in the Ollerton and Boughton area then please contact PCSO 6689 Gav Oxby on 07880900529 and I will be able to mark such property.

Is a cannabis farm funding organised crime in your community? Cannabis farms grow violence and organised crime in communities Cannabis can harm individuals and communities. When it is organised criminal gangs that are growing it, they can bring further crime into your neighbourhood. Human trafficking Sometimes people working in the ‘farms’ have been victims of human trafficking who are working there against their will or vulnerable members of the public intimidated into working for a criminal gang. You can tell if there is a problem Gangs don’t want to draw attention to the houses or flats they use as farms. They’re often quiet and unassuming and they can look just like any other home at first glance. However, there are signs that there is a cannabis farm in your area. In the space of four years, the number of cannabis farms detected by the police in the UK increased by more than 150%. We take information on cannabis cultivation from you anonymously. This campaign is supported by the Home Office and the National Policing Lead for cannabis. How can you tell if there’s a cannabis farm near you? ● A strong and sickly sweet smell ● Equipment to grow cannabis being taken into a house. For example, lighting and ventilation equipment.

● Constantly covered or blocked-off windows. Cannabis factories often have constantly pulled curtains, black-out blinds or foil coverings. ● Unsociable coming and going at all hours or neighbours you never see. ● Strong and constant lighting day and night. ● High levels of heat and condensation. Cannabis factories often give off heat and the windows stay misted up. ● Constant buzz of ventilation. Listen out for a whirring sound as the growers try to create an ideal climate for the plants to grow. ● Lots of power cables. Gangs dig underground to lay cables that hook up to things like lamp posts so they don’t have to pay for the enormous amounts of electricity they use. They can easily bypass a £20,000 utility bill. Tell us where they are, not who you are If you spot any of the signs that there may be a cannabis farm in your community you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or use our Anonymous Online Form. You will not be asked any personal details and neither your telephone number nor IP address will not be traced or recorded.

Together, they traverse the harsh Nebraska Territories marked by stark beauty, psychological peril and constant threat. A sprawling and thoughtful film, slow paced and meaningful insights on the harsh frontier from director Tommy Lee Jones.

Book Review:

Revival Release: 11 Nov 2014 by Stephen King

A spectacularly dark and electrifying novel about addiction, religion, music and what might exist on the other side of life. In a small New England town, in the early 60s, a shadow falls over a small boy playing with his toy soldiers. Jamie Morton looks up to see a striking man, the new minister, Charles Jacobs. Soon they forge a deep bond, based on their fascination with simple experiments in electricity. Decades later, Jamie is living a nomadic lifestyle of barband rock and roll. Now an addict, he sees Jacobs again - a showman on stage, creating dazzling ‘portraits in lightning’ - and their meeting has profound consequences for both men. Their bond becomes a pact beyond even the Devil’s devising, and Jamie discovers that revival has many meanings. This rich and disturbing novel spans five decades on its way to the most terrifying conclusion Stephen King has ever written. It’s a masterpiece from King, in the great American tradition of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe. ISBN-13: 978-1444789171 £9.95 Amazon

Or perhaps and electric bike or folding bike if space is an issue or a train trip prior to a town drive to work. ● Heading out onto the great outdoors and trails, - mountain bikes are ideal ● Younger riders will need special kids’ bikes. It’s worth buying quality if you possibly can. Cheap kids bikes tend to be heavy and poorly made. ● Older kids are back in love with BMX bikes, and there’s nothing better for building bike-handling skills and all-round having fun. ● Retailers will have a range of bikes to choose from so consider: Set your budget – don’t get carried away with the features – keep it simple – talk the experts. Choose a shop – good bikes are in the specialist shops – get them to explain the “jargon” Browse a few bike shops before you think about buying. Choose your gears – these can be, 16, 20, 27 and even 30 gears! It’s not the number of gears that really matters but whether the range, fits the terrain you’ll be riding in. Make sure the bike shop shows you how the gears work. Get the right size- Bikes come in different frame sizes to match your leg length. Suspension or not? - Mountain bikes intended for real off-road

use have shock-absorbing systems. Bikes with suspension just up front, in the fork, are known as hardtails, while bikes with front and rear suspension are referred to as full- or dualsuspension bikes. Some cheaper mountain bikes and even some hybrid bikes have suspension forks. Unfortunately, inexpensive suspension systems work poorly and add weight and complexity, so it’s best to steer clear of them. Test the bike before you buy - There’s no substitute for a spin round the block or car park to get a feel for the fit and handling of your potential new bike. Many manufacturers organise demo days, where you can ride a range of their bikes. Ask about these at your local bike shops, especially at the beginning of the year when new models are being introduced.

So what is Diane up to now?

H

i so for those that know about my new venture; The Atlas Discovery Holiday Company I just wanted to offer an update into how things are going. For those that don’t know me or the business – well love to tell you about it. I am the owner of The Sherwood Newsletter and we are now in our 7th year. Andy Jones is the Editor and kindly takes care of things doing an amazing job.

So what is The Atlas Discovery? We are a local tour company organising holidays in Morocco. The business was set up after I visited Morocco to climb Mount Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa. There are lots of tour operators out there taking guests hiking and trekking, but they are mainly it seems, from France, Germany, Switzerland or Spain and I wanted to provide the opportunity for local British people to see the amazing sights I had seen and enjoy the wonderful experiences. Yes there are some larger companies offering similar tours but we pride ourselves on offering something unique. We take you ‘off the beaten track’ to areas often unseen by tourists. All our Moroccan, English speaking Guides are professional, qualified and experienced. We also have strong ethics to ensure they all get paid a fair wage and we try to put as much money as possible back into the villages we visit. Plus we offer great prices as we are a small company with low overheads.

What do I Do? Well I organise the tours from the UK. We are a British based, British registered Limited company with a Trust MyTravel bond for your peace of mind. This is a security all tour operators should have to ensure your money is in a safe

place. Fraudsters are sadly out there. I can assist in helping you choose the right trip for you as we offer a variety of tours including; cultural walking holidays taking you through beautiful lush valleys, Sahara desert treks with panorama scenery and mountain climbs with breath taking views. All our tours have varied ascents and stamina levels so please talk to me and I can offer guidance. In Morocco I will be at the airport to meet you wearing my ‘Atlas T-shirt’ alongside my fabulous team out there, to escort you to your hotel at Marrakech. Everyone who goes to Morocco has to visit the ‘red’ bustling city so we always ensure you get at least one night to soak up the ‘spicy’ atmosphere and visit the souks. I am with your alongside our team throughout your stay and you will always feel safe whether you are a solo traveller, couple or with a small group or family (suitable for older children only). We offer a community spirit so you never need to be alone but you can have as much space as you like. As you can see in this insert we have a fabulous winter sunshine ‘Relax & Chill’ holiday at one of my favourite seaside resorts; Sidi Kaouki near Eassouira, an undiscovered beach that hosts just a few Europeans and of course horses and camels to ride on the sands. Fancy an escape from Christmas and something different? Why not join us on a Sahara Desert Escape? Plus we have a new February date! Our tours start from £349 inc. So if you are looking at your 2015 holidays and want some fabulous sunshine, great scenery, fresh air and something different give me a call on 07916 245 367 or email me at dianecarter@theatlas-discovery.com Visit our website for more tours on www.theatlas-discovery.com and find us on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sherwood-CommunityNewsletter/1901695176635729

your body to produce adequate melanin to aid you the next time you tan.

Safe Tanning in the Winter Sun

T

o avoid risks when out in the sun and to achieve a safe sun-based tan, follow these tips for a healthy summer glow.

Wear Your Shades And A Hat

Exfoliate Your Skin To achieve the best possible tan outdoors, you must exfoliate before sun exposure. The act of exfoliation removes the dead cells from the uppermost layer of the skin and allows for fresh skin to appear. The removal of dead skin will also allow you to tan more easily because your tan will appear and fade evenly.

Wear SPF Sunscreen

To achieve an even tan, remember your shades and hat. The skin around your eyes is delicate especially to UV rays. Sunglasses labelled “UV absorption up to 400 nm” or “Meets ANSI UV Requirements” will block 99% of UV rays. A hat with a 2-3” brim can protect your ears, eyes, forehead, nose, and scalp all at once while you look stylish getting your tan. Although a baseball cap looks ideal, it only offers protection to the front and top of the head, leaving the neck and ears vulnerable to sun exposure. Photo: Moroccan

shashe ‘donning’

Contrary to the beliefs of many tanning enthusiasts, you can still tan with sunscreen, and it’s better that you do. In fact, sun protection factor (SPF) extends the time you can spend in the sun without suffering additional skin damage. Higher SPF numbers therefore provide better protection against ultraviolet B “burning rays” (UVB) rays.

Do NOT Overexpose Your Skin To The Sun To get a healthy and glowing tan, do not overexpose your skin to UV rays. It is best to tan gradually by dividing your time under the sun evenly to reduce sunburn. Spending a whole day at the beach may give you a tan look for a day but it may very well leave you with sunburns when you leave. The best way to get a healthy summer glow is to tan in small doses. Half an hour to an hour under the sun a day will allow

Blidworth Local News Blidworth Parish Council (BPC 1. In the rush to get last month’s report out we reported mainly on the Blidworth in Bloom results etc. A week or so later we received notification, (with many apologies), from the Secretary of the East Midlands in Bloom Competition, advising that Blidworth Oaks School had also won Gold, which was fantastic news after all the work they have done following last a Silver last year. We believe that the number of Gold Awards given this year totals 14, of which Blidworth won 2 of these, a fantastic achievement, considering the total population taking part in this competition. Prior to our Parish Meeting in October, we held the Presentation of Awards Event for all Prize Winners. We also thanked Cllr Mrs Christine Dabbs for all her work & organising / advising everybody involved in this Annual Event. Coming soon:2. On 29 November 2014 – Switch on Event – this year there is a new format – BPC will now only be responsible for all the arrangements regarding the Xmas Lights (Switch On 4.30pm), Blidworth Community Association will now be running the Christmas Market etc. For hiring Stalls etc. contact either:email: bcavintagesummermarket@gmail.com or Mrs L Chadwick 07798941066. 3. We all like to believe in Angels. They are extremely important to us during times of trial and especially when we are going through grief. Different people have different ways of interpreting signs of angels. Some people even state they can see them. Some people believe if they see a white feather it is a message from their guardian angel that they are with them. I am one of those. The Songs of Angels, written by a wide range of authors is a poetry book full of warmth, love, lifting and of course Angels. You could almost feel the writers are angels themselves as they so want to give something to help the reader through their day. All the poems are beautiful but I especially loved Wendy Hall’s The White Feather and Rose Servitovsa’s Surrender. Plus, for a dose of pure inspiration read Arthur Carr’s No Limit to What You Can Do. A beautiful gift for family, friends and if someone needs uplifting. A treat too for yourself to treasure. The book is published by local Company Thynks Publications Ltd and you can purchase it from Amazon at £5.99p plus p&p, or email Thynks Publications for details of how to order: thynkspublications@yahoo.co.uk

All are welcome. - This will be a great night of fun. Bring a team along or yourself – Book a ticket via Ann 07914116459 or Keith 07933126137 or pick up tickets at Adcock Finances, Ravenshead or Blidworth Pharmacy. Remember as a PPG we are working with the practice to deliver what the population needs in respect of healthcare and to ensure they are able to access services they value by keeping patients informed about healthcare developments locally. INTERESTED IN JOINING THE PPG - Meetings are bi-monthly at Blidworth surgery. The next meeting will be held on Thursday 9th October at 4.30pm – Want to know more about us please come along *** for further information please contact: Gilly Hagen (Blidworth) (Co Chair): Tel: 07816933429 or email: gillyflower50@hotmail.com or Ann Giles (previously Wharmby) (Ravenshead) (Co Chair & sub-committee member for fundraising) Mob: 07914 116459

Blidworth Local News Blidworth & District Historical & Heritage Society On October 7th the Society’s members and guests heard a presentation by Bill Taylor, an expert on the early railway lines of Nottinghamshire. He talked of how the line known as the Dukeries Route came into being and showed some excellent slides of old steam engines in the local stations around Edwinstowe, Ollerton and Shirebrook. Alan Higgins showed further slides of recently acquired photographs of old Blidworth. Without doubt, Alan’s

presentation is most popular and always very well received. During the evening, the Society’s book on the 1st World War was available to members and guests. The book is packed with stories of the Parish of Blidworth from before the Great War, through the war and afterwards up to the coming of the colliery in 1926. The cost is £10.00 plus £2.50 for first class postage and can be ordered from dalesmallwood@ ntlworld.com As usual, meetings are in the Function Room of Blidworth Welfare, Mansfield Road, Blidworth. out with! “ The Eco dress section of Miss Mansfield challenges the finalists to make an outfit using existing materials and clothes to transform into an eco- friendly outfit. Sharon Baum, Shop Manager said “The Cornwater Club Charity Shop is proud to support this part of the event as it fits into our recycling ethos”

Laura Haynes, a Miss Mansfield Finalist has won the Eco Dress Section of the competition using clothing and materials from the Cornwater Club Charity Shop on Queen Street in Mansfield. Laura said “I thought it was fate finding a statement dress at the Cornwater Club Charity Shop which was in my exact size” The white wedding dress formed the basis of Laura’s design. She chose the Rainbows hospice as her preferred charity and decided to represent this in the dress by using a number of different coloured scarves, which she cut up and tied into bows. These were then attached to the train of the dress, creating a fountain of colour.

The Eco Dress will be on display at the Cornwater Club Charity Shop from midday on Thursday 23rd October 2014. C/O Melissa Blythe

Laura said “I’m so proud of how the dress turned out and ecstatic that it won best Eco dress of the night. It’s all thanks to Cornwater charity shop that I had such an amazing dress to start

Local Church News Thought for the Month What a contrast in the weather! Just a few weeks ago we were enjoying those warm, sunny days of Summer, and as I write this we’re in the middle of a wet and windy patch. There have been changes in the countryside, too, with fields harvested and the leaves on the trees turning red and golden. The swallows have flown away back to warmer lands and the supermarkets are beginning to fill the shelves with mince pies, rich fruit cake and other seasonal fare. The changing seasons are a visible reminder of the change we live with all the time. Children are born and grow up and before we know it, they’re teenagers leaving school. Some change goes on at such a gentle pace that we hardly realize it’s happening. Suddenly we find that there are so many young people about – we’ve moved on and become the older generation! A teacher I know embraces change and finds it exciting, but when change comes suddenly it can be challenging. For example children moving away to college or for work, or the loss of a job, or bereavement – these events can bring changes that are not welcome. There are all sorts of adjustments to be made. One of the great messages the Bible brings us is the changelessness of God and his abiding presence through all the generations. There are stories of how God has rescued

and guided people down the ages and how, with him as guide, seemingly hopeless situations can become success stories. Before leaving his disciples Jesus said: ‘If you love me, you will keep my commandments…’ and he said that he would ask the Father to send the Spirit of truth, to be with them forever. Some of us may have change to face at the moment or we may feel uncertain about the future, and what it may bring. By taking each day one step at a time and asking God to be with us, we find that we’re not facing change alone. There’s the example of Moses: one moment getting on with his life and minding the sheep, and the next called by God to bring his people out of slavery! Or there’s the example of St Paul. He began by being completely against Jesus’ followers. But after meeting Christ on the Damascus road he became the great missionary of the early Church. Through all the changes they faced, we find that they did not face them alone. God was with them through it all. When we ask God to be our guide and companion we find that his promise to ‘never to leave us or forsake us’ is true. The falling leaves and darker evenings remind us that change is happening. When we trust in God we find that truly, his word is ‘a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.’ Rev Clare Tyack, Curate The United Benefice of St Mary of the Purification, Blidworth and St Simon & St Jude, Rainworth
