Sherwood News and Information Mark Spencer MP We are all too aware of the need for a good internet connection, especially if you do not have it. Whether we want to just browse online or run a business we need fast broadband infrastructure. This is especially true of rural areas in the North of Sherwood such as Ollerton, Boughton, Edwinstowe and others. The Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire programme is the name for the rollout of fibre based cabling, over 1 million metres of it to be precise. There may be as many as 2500 distribution points and under the existing contract to complete this rollout the work will continue until 2016. As the rollout programme is at an early stage it is very difficult to say with any accuracy when work will be completed. This is due to the engineering and other timescales and factors involved in this huge project. ● The New Ollerton exchange area is currently scheduled to have fibre-based broadband structures installed during the period January to June 2015 ● Old Ollerton is fed from the Edwinstowe Exchange which is currently scheduled to have fibre-based broadband structures installed during the period April to September 2015 It should be mentioned that not everyone will receive superfast

broadband speeds (of at least 24 Mbps) as this is dependent on the distance between the cabinet and the property. Also homes and businesses must sign up for fibre-based broadband when it becomes available in their area, they will not be automatically signed up for it. The arrival of high speed broadband is excellent news to me as I met with a large group of business leaders in September last year who are desperate to gain access to this infrastructure. Fibrebased broadband will enable them to conduct faster more efficient e-commerce and web presence. This will also be of huge benefit to individuals who are still waiting for a fast internet service and I hope that it will be completed on time. I will be watching closely to identify, black spots where speeds are not good enough and encouraging BT to address these as soon as possible. Progress of the project as it is progressing will appear on the County Council’s website www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/ broadband If anyone has any queries please do not hesitate to drop me an email on mark.spencer.mp@parlaiment.uk

black to keep the look summery but chic. Native touches continue into embellishments too. Think fringing, think wild west? Not any more. On the Spring Summer catwalk,

This summer’s hottest accessories return to nature and take their influence from across the globe. Natural fibres and woven fabrics evoke a natural look and bring a simple, warm minimalist look to this season’s fashions. Neutral colourings that enhance the natural shade of these raw fabrics - raffia, straw and jute - are light and feminine. This look is all about texture. It’s earthy and wholesome but unhesitatingly chic. The basket weave is a classic look that awakens a sense of summertime, the countryside and wistful nostalgia. Yet basket weaves don’t have to look like a picnic hamper, clunky or rustic. At fashion week, woven bags were seen at Michael Kors and Paul & Joe. The weaves were small, intricate, elegant. Now the high street is following suit too. This neat, precise woven look suits structured bags and, particularly, the oversize clutch. With complementary, minimal and neutral trims, the woven clutch is both sophisticated and chic. Better still, these structured bags are versatile and shift easily between day and night.

Calvin Klein’s feminine, fringed dresses had an air of the roaring twenties about them. Toning down excessive glamour with unassuming fabric and neutral shades, this way of wearing fringing conveys a relaxed confidence that’s perfect for business or evening wear. This season, designers use tassels to embellish garments from tops and skirts to jackets and full length coats. Tassels might seem tough to pull off but pair a tasselled top with a sleek pair of neutral trousers and you have a very modern take on nomadic, casual styling. Avoid looking too busy by block colouring your whole outfit in the same shade and choosing simple lines. When shopping, keep in mind that this trend is all about enhancing texture, playing with movement and structure. Edge into the trend with woven accessories or go the whole way, pairing your natural bag and shoes with ethnically inspired patterns or block colour fringing. Don’t forget to finish off the look with some globally

high street. Native patterns work best on loose fitting garments. Think pyjama suits and oversize jackets. This trend is a great way of injecting variety into your casual wear. Keep to a single colour tone - shades of blue or shades of yellow - or mix with

Spring Clean Your Make-up Bag? When was the last time you had a good clean out of your makeup bag? Well spring into action! Lip Products: Lipsticks are more waxy than ‘watery’ so it’s not likely that your lippy will pose a threat, but if you use a lip brush try and wash it (at least) once a month. Treat lip glosses the same as mascara and again, do not share. Lip pencils; sharpen before use to keep fresh. SKIN Products: Foundations, BB creams and tinted moisturiser which are oil-free won’t last long. Any smell or separation is a sure sign that it’s time to re-stock. If you use your fingers for your cream blush, do wash them (improves brush for a more blended finish). Eye Products: Pay attention to eyes, to avoid any unnecessary dramas, mascaras shouldn’t be kept longer than two months (dipping brushes in and out causes bacteria to build up). Powerbased eye shadows are the safest (no water content) but be wary of cream shadows, these do have a ‘use by date’. To be on the safe side, sharpen pencils every time before using them so you’re starting a new bit of colour each time. If you develop an eye infection, chuck out the products you’ve used. And don’t share eye products. Ever. Makeup BAG & BRUSHES: Use common sense; anything used regularly on your face should be cleaned regularly as unlike the product itself, brushes don’t contain the preservatives, products do. Don’t share brushes (would you share your tooth brush?). Do be careful of the sponge applicators that come with your product – we can keep them for years without cleaning, but chuck if necessary. Do clean your makeup bag out as often as you clean your brushes. Remember, bacteria thrive in warm conditions, and this is a perfect hideaway – some can be chucked in the washing machine, others can be wiped out carefully with an antibacterial wipe. Tip: Wash your makeup brushes with a mild or baby shampoo.

Children’s Book Review: Thomas the Toadilly Terrible Bully By: Janice Levy Out Now

Thomas hates being ignored. But when his attempts to impress everyone don’t make him any friends, he decides to be a bully instead. There’s just one problem: he makes a terrible bully. A toadilly terrible one, in fact. It turns out, though, that there’s an even bigger bully around, and Thomas discovers what it feels like to be the one who’s being bullied. But a bit of teamwork helps him outwit the bully and make a new friend. And being a friend, Thomas finds, is far more fun than being a bully. ISBN-13: 978-0802853738 Amazon £10.03 Hardback

Brighter Futures Education Feature by Jill Bator Encourage your child to read Many children will have taken part in school events to celebrate “World book day” in March. Seeing children getting excited over these events and deciding which character from their favourite book they would be, prompted me to think about the importance of reading in our lives. I have had a love of books and reading from an early age and I couldn’t imagine my life without books. Books give us the ability to extend our knowledge, experience different times and places, be part of an event we could never experience, offer escape from the real world, follow the lives of others and so much more. The ability to read gives us all so much. It is a skill that once learned will stay with us for life. Encouraging your child to read will help them with spelling skills, improve vocabulary and fire their imagination. It is important to expose children to books from an early age. This doesn’t have to be costly. Have you thought about joining your local library? A visit to the library will not only give your child free access to hundreds of books, library visits are something that all members of the family can take part in together. Why not start your child on a learning journey and encourage their passion for reading? Remember, reading skills and books are for life, not just for World book day! www.brighterfutureseducation.co.uk

Dancing all the way to Oxford… It’s been a busy time for five talented Sixth Form dancers this week – after taking part in the Opening Ceremony of the School Games on 28 February, they’ve now picked up the winners’ trophy at the ‘Great Big Dance Off’ East Midlands heats at Nottingham’s Albert Hall! Sophie Britton, Heidi Robinson, Chanel Goodman, Rebecca Bell and Georgia Redfern have been dancing together in school performances since Year 7. Now, in Year 12, they’ve stepped out to take the prestigious title of East Midlands winners at the regional competition on 6 March. Their performance of ‘Yin and Yang’ – a mix of ballet and contemporary dance – obviously impressed the judges at the competition, which encourages schools across the country to showcase their most talented performers. They’ll travel to Oxford in June for the finals – and Mrs Unitt, Partnership Lead for Performing Arts, is thrilled at their success. ‘I decided to enter the girls into the competition to celebrate the school recently being awarded a specialism in Performing Arts,’ she said. ‘I was incredibly excited that they were chosen to perform at the Opening Ceremony of the School Games last month and now they’ve won the East Midlands heat of the Great Big Dance Off. To say I’m proud is an understatement and they were fantastic ambassadors for the school.’ Good luck to the girls in Oxford in June!

Reluctant Gardener: April Wow what a difference now it has stopped raining so much. All the spring flowers have pushed through and we had wonderful patches of daffodils in and around the area. Now, hopefully all the frosts have gone, we can get weeding and tidy up overgrown areas and pile up the garden rubbish. Other important tasks to consider this month:

• •

Sort out the perennial weeds now, saving time hitting them early. When it is warm enough, treat sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative; brushes and rollers are fine

Vegetable patches can be planted with: asparagus, rhubarb, peas, carrots, potatoes and onions.

Sow the seeds of summer annuals in your greenhouse or on a window sill.

Repair any lawn damage and fertilize to promote growth.

Start planting your salads (tomatoes, cucumber and lettuce) indoors on a window sill or out in your greenhouse if it is warm. To ensure tasty fruit in the summer, plant out strawberries, blueberries, gooseberries and introduce fruit trees.

Prune back rose-bushes to promote nicer long stemmed flowers in the summer. Give them a good feed with specialist fertilizer. Keep checking for pests such as aphids and spray if required.

Clean and repair your garden tools, book the lawn mower in for a service and check garden furniture for any rot.

for most things. Tidy up the pond watching out for frogspawn (it has arrived by late March) so disturb the pond edges as little as possible,

• •

Mulch bare soil once the ground is clear of perennial weeds. Give your vegetable patch some TLC. Add in well-rotted manure or compost to give it a boost for the growing season.

For colour in your garden, make sure you plant bulbs such as Gladiolus, Lillie’s and Dahlias. To get a spread of flowering colour throughout the summer, keep planting batches of bulbs every two

weeks until June.

Above all – clean up the BBQ and outdoor seating – I’m expecting a nice warm summer! Happy Gardening Andy

Security & Safety - Sponsored by OVERT alarms ‘Protect Your Tech’ from Burglars Leading Home Insurer Zurich Insurance has claimed that the theft of high-value portable gadgets has contributed to a rise of more than 40% in the average cost of thefts from homes over the last three years. That’s despite a drop in the number of burglary claims. And furthermore it seems that us Brits are horrified when contemplating life without our gadgets. A Zurich survey found that if burgled, we said that losing our laptops would have the biggest impact (40%), followed by mobile phones (32%) and televisions (20%). Despite almost three quarters of people worrying about being burgled, many are failing to take sensible precautions to protect their technology from being pinched. More than one in five (21%) never bother to hide valuables when leaving the house and 37% leave portable gadgets such as iPads and e-book readers easily accessible. This makes chilling reading for Home Insurers who have to help householders deal with the consequences of burglary on a daily basis. Zurich are so concerned about the lack of security measures put in place by most homeowners that they’ve done something rather strange. They’ve teamed up with a reformed burglar to give you some serious advice on how to protect your property. 1.

9. 10.

Always keep your gate closed. A gate left slightly ajar or open is a signal to burglars you’re not particularly safety conscious and will make them think you’re probably lax about other security measures. Always double lock your door. Traditionally a burglar will push the door using their foot and if it makes a little gap, they know it’s not double locked and can easily be broken into. Don’t give burglars a reason to break-in. Always ensure valuables are kept out of sight and away from windows. Photograph the rooms in your house. If a burglar ‘trashes’ your home, it can be hard to remember where items were placed and what exactly has gone missing. Photographs can also be useful when talking to your insurer about which items have been stolen. Don’t tell burglars your house is empty. Don’t use social media to advertise when you’re away on holiday and avoid the temptation to update your location status while you’re away. Hide all keys in a drawer; don’t leave them in view or in window locks. Don’t give burglars a leg-up. Chain your wheelie bins together as burglars use them to get through windows and for access to upper floors. Shred all paperwork. Even an envelope which contains your name and address could allow burglars to clone you. This is particularly important now that many of us have detailed online profiles. Don’t give burglars the tools to break into your home. All tools should be stored in a secure, locked in a shed. Keep luggage in the loft. Burglars will use your suitcases and bags to take your possessions from your home

Crimestoppers holds Midlands conference to unite agencies in the fight against crime “We will not rest on our laurels,” was the clear message conveyed at a conference held by the crime-fighting Charity, Crimestoppers last month. The Midlands Regional Conference, brought together law enforcement agencies, commercial organisations, Neighbourhood Watch and members of the community to discuss how best we can make neighbourhoods safer and how, by engaging with Crimestoppers, delegates could make a real difference to reducing crime in their community. A recent ‘Crime Matters’ survey, which sought to engage with the UK public and gain their insight into concerns they have about crime was discussed. This survey prompted almost 2,000 responses, of which 96 per cent of people felt anonymity was key to the Charity’s work, and 83 per cent said that they would use Crimestoppers again to pass on information about crime. Representatives from law enforcement also spoke at the event, highlighting the importance of Crimestoppers’ work with the police, communities and businesses. If you have any information about crime, please contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or fill out an Anonymous Online Form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org

Security & Safety - Sponsored by OVERT alarms Working together for a safer and vibrant Mansfield

T

aking his latest fact-finding meeting into the heart of Mansfield gave Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping the opportunity to hear at first-hand how community safety partnership work in the town dovetails with that of the police. Ruth Marlow, the chair of Mansfield Partnership Against Crime (MPAC), told the Strategic Resources and Performance Meeting how multi-agency team-working strives to make the town a safer place by responding to challenges ranging from domestic abuse and youth issues to child poverty and problem hotspots. Mr Tipping said at the meeting last month: “Working together brings the benefit of many different skills, increasing the ability to make our communities safer. “One of the Partnership’s most successful initiatives is the way it tackles the challenges of the night-time economy. While working to reduce problems of crime and disorder, the aim is also to help Mansfield achieve Purple Flag status for excellence in the management of its town centre

at night. We want people to enjoy themselves in safety in this vibrant town.” To help keep revellers safe and prevent problems, wardens work with the police and other partners such as street pastors on the busiest nights of the week. Aside from its work with the night-time economy, Ms Marlow said that in the coming year the Partnership will be focusing on people in the area who cause most trouble. This will involve robust policing, ‘hi-vis’ patrols in hotspots, and support for victims, witnesses and those who feel unsafe. MPAC brings organisations together to deal with issues such as alcohol-related crime, antisocial behaviour, burglary, domestic violence, personal safety and vehicle crime. The Partnership includes the Police, Mansfield District and Nottinghamshire County Councils, the Fire & Rescue Service, Mansfield and Ashfield Clinical Commissioning Group and Nottinghamshire Probation Trust. The Commissioner’s meeting, which was open to members of the public, was held at the town’s Civic Centre. Book Review: Thief’s Magic (Book 1 of Millennium’s Rule Trilogy)

Transcendence Directed by: Wally Pfister

By: Trudi Canavan

Release Date: 18th April

Release date: 15th May

Starring: Johnny Depp, Paul Bethany, Morgan Freeman This film is the directorial debut of cinematographer Wally Pfister. Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bethany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.

JF209

In a world where an industrial revolution is powered by magic, Tyen, a student of archaeology, unearths a sentient book called Vella. Once a young sorcerer-bookbinder, Vella was transformed into a useful tool by one of the greatest sorcerers of history. Since then she has been collecting information, including a vital clue to the disaster Tyen’s world faces. Elsewhere, in a land ruled by the priests, Rielle the dyer’s daughter has been taught that to use magic is to steal from the Angels. Yet she knows she has a talent for it, and that there is a corrupter in the city willing to teach her how to use it - should she dare to risk the Angels’ wrath. But not everything is as Tyen and Rielle have been raised to believe. Not the nature of magic, nor the laws of their lands. Not even the people they trust. It is a shy, secretive bird, so you should consider yourself fortunate if you see one. Although Bullfinches are principally seed eaters, it is late winter when they earn their reputation for being a pest by fruit growers because they feed off the developing buds of fruit trees. By the 1970’s, the species showed such an alarming reduction in numbers that it was put on the Red list of the Birds of Conservation Concern (BoCC). This rapid decline

Di’s Travels: March Visit to The Atlas Discovery Holiday Retreat at Sidi Kaouki, Essaouira, Morocco March 14

ast month I wrote about how as a crazy business lady I chose to set up The Atlas Discovery Company Ltd. This month I would love to tell you more about my last visit to Morocco and hope to entice you to come and join me!

I always love to visit our Retreat Centre as within a few hours I can feel myself unwinding from the stresses of modern day life. As you can see from the photo I love to take a sunset scroll across the beautiful beach on the Atlantic Coast.

My journey to Morocco began at Nottingham Coach Station as I often choose to use National Express Coaches for the airport journey, saving both on parking and road rage driving. Great prices, reliable and I always enjoy an en route read and snooze. If you use the coach always ensure it arrives at least 3 hours prior to the flight. For the outward flight I got a great deal with Thompson this time from Gatwick, they do fly from other London airports and also more local; Birmingham and Manchester with great deals. Luggage is extra at about £24. Sometimes I use Ryan Air from London Luton or Stanstead but I always book in plenty time due to their high demand. My trip began with a meet up with some members of The Atlas Team, putting final plans in place over Moroccan mint tea. (See them on our About Us Section on the website www.theatlas-discovery.com) Yes we are a new company but we have years of experience in travel, tourism and the leisure industry between us. Lucky you get to enjoy lots of opening offers and freebies! The first night stay at Riad Moulay Said is always a treat, based in the heart of the bustling historical city of Marrakech. I quickly unpacked, showered and then off we all went to get a taste of the Moroccan life. A friend quoted it as “Stepping into a story” and I agree with the narrow passageways, spicy smells of the food vendors and exciting colourful souks. A lovely warm evening helped me to enjoy a wonderful night’s sleep and I was awoken by the birds singing - a change from the ringing of the alarm! Off to the Dar Alida Retreat at Sidi Kaouki, Essaouira, where we shared afternoon tea with Aziz, the owner and his staff. I also picked up a few pâtisserie in Essaouira market for an extra treat so we all tucked into delicious almond, chocolate and coconut pastries. It is so exciting putting the final plans together and seeing everything falling into place. We did have a few visitors whilst there and no doubt they will come and say hello to you too. (See Mr camel right). The temperature whilst I was there was about 30 degrees but it often feels cooler due to the Atlantic breeze so I always take a good hat, sun cream and glasses of course. As part of our mission statement to support local villages and put money into the local economy we visited our local Titrate Argan Oil Co-operative to see how Imane and her ladies were getting on with their work. Imane started the business in 2010 and the majority of the workers are widowed and it is great what she has achieved offering them a good income to provide them with a better quality of life. We will be visiting Imane at the Titrite Oil Clinic as part of our Retreat tour with wonderful products to buy for both internal and external health benefits. So back to Marrakech and another overnight stay in the Riad Moulay Said. The Riad has a beautiful outdoor pool, open air gardens, Spa and massage area and traditional restaurant. All the bedrooms are decorated in true Moroccan style with gorgeous deep colours and patterned ceilings. Breakfast is freshly made pancakes and honey from the restaurant and then off back home via British Airways this time. (Sometimes you can mix flights for a cheaper deal). B.A. offer up to 23 kg hand luggage allowance, provided you can lift the bag yourself into the hold plus check for actual bag size. I love the extra homeward treat of a B.A. complimentary delicious meal and cool drink and au revior Morocco. Can’t wait to return again soon and hopefully see you there. Can you help?

Do you have a free hour or two once a month? Action on Hearing Loss (previously the RNID) has set up free hearing aid drop-ins around Nottinghamshire. It takes time to adapt to using hearing aids – getting used to new sounds as well as managing the hearing aids themselves and we are looking for people to help us run free drop-in clinics to support hard of hearing people in the local community. You can find us at: Sherwood Methodist Church, 3rd Wed of the month 10am-11am. We are looking for people who can spare a couple of hours each month to support the local community officer and help with any of the following jobs: • Re-tubing hearing aids and battery replacement • Greeting people using the service • Completing paper work • Giving advice and support to people to make the most of their hearing aids We will give you full training, expenses and all the support you need. One current volunteer says ‘It’s very satisfying to know that the two hours I give the charity each month benefits so many people. I love supporting and meeting new people so this role really suits me’. Rainworth & Blidworth Branch of the Royal British Legion RAINWORTH VILLAGE HALL I am pleased to say that Rainworth Village Hall are putting on their 4th Summer Fun Day Event on Saturday 12th July 2014; they have accepted our offer of the use of our Stocks and Wet Sponges, I am sure that the younger children and some of the older people will enjoy throwing wet sponges at us locked in the stocks. We are also hoping to put on an additional stall and will be asking the “Blidworth Army Cadets” with whom we are affiliated to assist in either putting on their own stall or assisting us on ours. I should mention that some of the older cadets volunteered to take their turn in the stocks and get as wet or possibly wetter than the rest of us volunteers. FURTHER EVENTS.

Local News - Rainworth Reporter

A good walk and a bit of history - The druid stone A Blidworth landmark, thought to have been deposited in fields around Blidworth 450,000 years ago after ice melt-water flooded farmland.

There is a hole, large enough for a man to pass through the stone's centre, and it is said that on the day of the summer solstice the rising sun passes through as it rises. Although it is unlikely that the hole is naturally formed, it has over time given rise to the possibility of pagan rituals and that druids or Celts created the aperture due to the alignment being almost perfect east to west. Local historians have noted in times past that folk would pass sick children through the stone to cure whooping cough. Another thought, possibly linked to nearby rickets lane, is that this children’s illness might be cured. Interestingly, Rickets lane was formerly known as Riggs gate lane and it is easy to see how this thought came about. The site of the stone affords walkers with wonderful views of Blidworth Dale as you descend the footpath and over styles leading down from rickets lane past the druid stone. Those wishing to continue along the footpath can exit close to the little

On a clear day, walking back to Blidworth along rickets lane ,it is possible to see Lincoln cathedral and power stations along the Trent valley. It is also possible to see the water tower at Mackworth near Derby and also Belvoir castle, with good binoculars. There are further deposits of stone of the same mass as the druid stone in and around Blidworth, particularly on the bridle way close to providence farm leading down to Fountaindale and Rainworth water. c/o John Durkin.

£950 raised at Charity Event held on 22nd March 2014 at Rainworth Miners Welfare. Local girl Helen Flear (26 yrs) was diagnosed suddenly in May 2013 with chronic kidney failure and is now on home dialysis awaiting a transplant. She has been supported by British Kidney Patient Association & Nottingham City Hospital Home Therapies and organised the event to raise funds for both of these charities. Blidworth & Ravenshead PPG This Patient Participation Group (PPG) works within the villages of Blidworth, Ravenshead & Rainworth and they are directly involved in promoting the patients’ perspective on health matters, and liaising with the health team within the practice, to influence the development of healthcare services locally. We work closely with other local PPGs and present the local voice to NHS commissioners. Within our community we aim to improve peoples’ awareness of ways of improving their health and on these issues over this year we are proposing to have a range of `Open Event’s` where we get experts to speak about particular health conditions. This year our events will target heart problems, diabetes, managing longterm conditions, cancer, breathing, falls. These events kick off with `Warm, Well & Wise’ at The Sherwood Forest Community Church. This is a full day event where a range of agencies come along and provide information about various topics such energy agencies, health teams and voluntary support teams accessible locally. Our PPG is currently active raising funds to provide the top of the art defibrillators for each surgery. The fund-raising sub-group has already had a successful Beetle Drive in Blidworth, and is soon to have one in Ravenshead. There has been a Swing Band night at The

Blidworth & District Historical & Heritage Society Our AGM was attended by 27 members and guests. It was agreed that future subscription rates would be reduced to £5 per annum and that the meetings would cost £2 per person to cover expenses. The following will remain on the Committee; John Smallwood - Chairman, Alan Higgins - Vice Chairman, Eric Hall Treasurer, Dale Smallwood - Secretary, Sheila Hall, Alan Ormston and Gordon Turner. Although Derek Wilson resigned from the Committee as a full time member he agreed to become an Honorary Committee member. We have also been fortunate to co-op Margaret Marias to the Committee. During the break there was a display of our archive photographs, our library books and history magazines. After the break, Alan Higgins presented the first part of our archive of recently discovered photographs of the village from 1991. This proved really popular and will be continued next month. Our next three meetings will

be; April 1st - Kevin Topham - Secrets of Dukes Wood and Crude oil production in Eakring. 6th May - Mr Clarke - The Pentrich Uprising. 3rd June - Ian Morgan - Within sight of The Gibbet. We start at 7 pm and would be very grateful if everyone could be seated by that time. Ample parking is available and new members are always welcome; just turn up on the night. There is normally a small charge of £2 which includes refreshments. If you have any photographs of the village and its people that we may copy and add to our archive we would love to hear from you. If you would like more information please contact us through our website. www.blidworthhistoricalsociety. co.uk Email: dalesmallwood@ ntlworld.com You can also follow us on Twitter @BlidworthHistory

Kevin Cogan, Carl Fairbrother and Sean Cogan, brother of Kevin, are running the Greater Manchester Marathon on Sunday 6th April 2014 to raise money for Cancer Research U.K. A lot of people in the runner’s families have been affected by cancer. Some have won the battle and unfortunately some have lost. Carl lost his Granddad to cancer recently which inspired them to run the Marathon for such a worthy cause. So far they have raised £1,700 since beginning training in November 2013. See photo above at the Spring Retford half marathon – They proudly ran it in 1 hour 40min and hoping to do the Manchester Marathon in under 4 hours! The group are also running for the Callum Wilkinson – Cycle Awareness. Callum (who was Sean’s partners’ nephew) sadly died aged 15 in cycling accident last year. They will be wearing the Yellow and Red wristband (as shown in the photo). The Cornwater Club Haidee Watson from Adcock Financial recently presented Cornwater Club member, Beryl Hind with a cheque for £78. The Staff from the Ravenshead based office have been collecting photocopier and printer cartridges on Cornwater’s behalf, since last October. The used cartridges are sent to ‘Honest Inks’ in Nottingham who operate, a cash for good causes scheme. They will pay for empty cartridges which they will then recycle, preventing them going to landfill. Asked why they had chosen the Cornwater Club, staff member, Haidee Watson said that her grandma, Nora Hallam, had been a member of the Club for many years. Nora had enjoyed attending the club and in the latter years of her life it had provided her with great enjoyment and was a place she

Rotary Club of Sherwood Forest

Rotary Club of Sherwood Forest One of the community groups Rotary were delighted to help this month was the Ollerton Village Jubilee Hall Committee. To improve the Hall’s green potential and to reduce the cost of heating we gave £250 towards the upgrading of the halls insulation. The Ollerton Village Jubilee Hall is a hive of activity and is a used facility and is a much used and valued asset for activities within the village. Many groups use the hall and Rotary uses it for their Murder Mystery evenings in the autumn.

Geoff Sells Chairman (photo above) being presented with £250 by Rotary President Mary Brown Recently we held our Annual Challenge evening with members of the Inner Wheel Club of Sherwood Forest. During the evening we have a games competition played between the two clubs, Rotary and Inner Wheel, for the Challenge Gauntlet Hand and a Rubber Glove! We play childhood games such as KerPlunk, Connect 4, giant Noughts and Crosses, Shove halfpenny, Dominoes, Darts and Operation – it was hilarious watching competitors trying to extract ‘foreign’ bodies without setting off an

alarm! The winner of this competition evening is the team who wins – wrong! The winning team presents to the losing team the Gauntlet and rubber glove. On this occasion it was the Pat Naylor President of the Inner Wheel club that is this year the custodian of the Challenge Gauntlet and Rubber Glove!

Blow your Trumpet! We are Sherwood Forest Brass band and are based at Clipstone welfare and offer free tuition to all ages wanting to learn a brass instrument. We are totally self funding and work hard at concerts and contests to raise funds to support our work. As a training band we mostly attract youngsters but occasionally we have older people wanting to re-learn or come back to their music. We rehearse every Monday at Clipstone welfare at 6.30pm for beginners and 7pm for everyone else. All are welcome to come along and have a listen and a toot! Our ages range from 7 through to 70! c/o Sam Heartfield, PR Officer Sherwood forest brass.

through that love we are forgiven whatever we may have done. We need to be reminded that we all need that forgiveness and that nothing we have done or that has happened to us can separate us from that offer of forgiveness. We need to remember as we suffer bereavement, and as we face our own death, that we have a God who understands, who shares our pain. And when we feel lost and bereft and cry out in the darkness, we hear the echo of Jesus’ cry from the cross and know that we are not alone. We need to remember that death is not the end, that we can be resurrected with Jesus. Wherever we are, whatever our circumstances, there is always the hope of new starts, new beginnings - resurrection. We need to remember the truth of Christian hope.
