A Celebration of our Past, Present and Future
From its inception in 2004 to the present day, the trajectory of Maple Bear has been marked by innovation and an unwavering commitment to providing top-tier Canadian-based bilingual education on a global scale.
FROM INSPIRATION TO CREATION
Rodney Briggs, Founder of Maple Bear Global Schools, was inspired by an idea that evolved from many conversations with education leaders around the world. It was clear that there was a global need to fill the gap for high-quality preschool education based on a model that differentiated itself from all others in the market - the best of Canadian education.
It is an exceptional and innovative model that would prepare children and adolescents for life and to be successful as students, professionals, citizens, and family members in their home countries or wherever they choose to live.
With this purpose in mind, Maple Bear developed an educational approach based on the best practices that have contributed to placing Canadian education among the best in the world. This approach, alongside a world-class program in traditional subjects like math and science, aims to instill in students a real passion for learning and prepare them for an environment where skills such as autonomy, critical thinking, collaboration, understanding of different cultures, resilience, and others are crucial for success.
IMPACT THROUGH GROWTH
From inspiration to creation, Maple Bear Global Schools has established a solid legacy of educational excellence that spans continents.
In the early years, building a global presence posed formidable challenges. Overcoming geographical and cultural barriers demanded innovative approaches and a deep understanding of diverse educational landscapes. Yet, it was precisely these challenges that laid the foundation for our growth.
From the signing of our first school in Delhi in 2004 to the current addition of 31 countries to our
global family (plus eight coming soon), Maple Bear’s footprint has expanded exponentially.
This growth is not just a numerical feat; it reflects our ability to adapt, evolve, and meet the diverse needs of students worldwide.
This unparalleled global footprint reflects our commitment to providing high-quality bilingual education and signifies Maple Bear’s adaptability and resonance on a truly global scale.
IMPACT THROUGH GIVING BACK
For Maple Bear, Giving Back isn’t just a concept; it’s foundational to our commitment to instilling values of empathy and social responsibility in our students. Through these endeavours, Maple Bear fosters a sense of global citizenship, illustrating the transformative power of collective action in creating a positive impact on the world.
An example of how much this belief impacts our operations can be found in the inspiration Maple Bear took from the spirit of Terry Fox, a Canadian hero whose Marathon of Hope ignited the nation.
In 2018, we launched a global fundraising initiative in the name of the Terry Fox Foundation - an organization supporting cancer research in Canada and abroad.
Since then, the program has grown and, in many countries, has evolved into a cherished annual event, weaving a thread of community spirit within and beyond our school boundaries.
The impact has been profound, with Maple Bear Global Schools collectively raising over
$700,000 (CDN) in donations for the Terry Fox Foundation and various regional cancer research organizations.
Alongside this project, Maple Bear promotes countless initiatives to foster in students the perception that they can and should be agents for transformation in their surroundings, contributing to building a better society at all levels.
IMPACT THROUGH COLLABORATION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Our Canadian Faculty are critical members of the Maple Bear family. They are responsible for training our teachers and school administrators around the world, performing quality assurance checks, and writing the curriculum that forms the foundation of our education model.
Recognizing the invaluable role they play and to further support their continuous professional development, we instituted an annual Symposium in 2015.
I’m proud of all the Maple Bear school owners around the world for the terrific job they have done in delivering what we promised when we began the company 20 years ago. The success of Maple Bear is based on the reality that we have people who truly believe in what we are doing, and in what we are trying to achieve. And that is an incredible strength.
Rodney Briggs, Founder
Once a year, our faculty come together to share ideas, motivate one another, and improve our processes and practices that subsequently enhance the teacher and student experience. This annual gathering served as a platform for knowledge-sharing and fueled the collaborative spirit that defines our global educational community.
As Maple Bear evolves, so will our Symposium. In 2024, the first-ever Global Conference will be held in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and the participants will expand to include our global partners and school owners from around the world, in addition to our faculty.
It is an opportunity to reframe our annual gathering that seeks to support all the stakeholders at Maple Bear, provide everyone with the benefit of best practice sharing, and be active participants in building a future that benefits our educators and students worldwide.
IMPACT THROUGH COLLECTIVE PASSION
Our celebration of the past would be incomplete without acknowledging the dedication of our Maple Bear community.
Teachers, trainers, administrators, school owners, parents, and students have been integral to our journey. Their collective passion has been the driving force behind every success, turning challenges into opportunities and fostering a vibrant global learning community that reinforces our dedication to shaping the minds of future generations worldwide.
Here’s to celebrating our past, embracing our achievements, and looking forward to the endless possibilities that the future holds for Maple Bear Global Schools.

Playful EntrepreneursA Food Hall Activity
Maple Bear SIA, Singapore
The Senior Kindergarten class at Maple Bear Singapore transformed a learning corner into a bustling food hall, thanks to imaginative minds.
Mini entrepreneurs emerged as they set up food stalls, playing the roles of buyers, sellers, and delivery staff. The lively atmosphere echoed with laughter as children practiced social skills—learning to buy food independently, master the art of queuing, and interact graciously.
Beyond the adorable façade of playful food stalls lay invaluable lessons in independence, financial literacy, cooperation, turn-taking, and the joy of shared experiences - learning through play at its best!
How Movie Awards Showcase Language Arts
Maple Bear Natal, Brazil
Watch out, Academy Awards! Aspiring filmmakers are honing their craft at Maple Bear in Natal, where the recent short film
competition, the Urso de Ouro (Golden Bear) Movie Awards, showcased the remarkable creativity and dedication of students in grades 6-9.
Portuguese Language Arts teachers helped the students engage in various creative stages of movie making, narrative production, script writing, filming, and editing. Students also created movie posters to advertise their original short films, and they learned how important time management is to complete a project successfully.
The red carpet was rolled out for a gala award ceremony at a local cinema. Parents and special guests celebrated the winners in categories such as Best Director, Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Costume/Makeup, Best Editing, Best Cinematography/Photography, and Best Soundtrack. Winners were selected by a panel of teachers and specialists in the local film industry during a private screening.
Creating a movie as a school project provides a holistic learning experience that integrates critical competencies like technical skills, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. It allows students to express themselves, explore their interests and develop their skills that will contribute to their future lives in meaningful ways.
Planting a Jasmine Tree for Kindergarten Graduation
Maple Bear Zhengzhou, China
Through Teacher Don Park’s unwavering commitment to building respectful and trusting relationships, he has become a role model for his students.
A testament to his creativity and thoughtful approach, with a 100-day countdown to graduation just weeks away, Don didn’t just mark the occasion;
he turned it into a meaningful experience by planting a jasmine tree.
It also provided a learning opportunity to explore the connection to the ecosystem and environmental stewardship, math and measurement, life cycle and growth, as well as teamwork and collaboration.
What an endearing activity that symbolizes not only student growth but also the tree’s growth and all the benefits it provides.
Sustainability Takes Root in a Beach Cleanup
Maple Bear Dubai, UAE
Maple Bear nursery schools in Dubai actively foster environmental consciousness among its young students.
The staff at Maple Bear UAE organized a beach cleanup for their students ranging from 2 years to 6 years old, with over 100 families turning up for the activity.
All set with cleanup equipment generously sponsored by Noon (an e-commerce site in the UAE), the Maple Bear family took over the Umm Suqeim beach adjacent to the iconic Burj Al Arab and safely collected litter found in the sand and near the shore.
After the successful cleanup, the nursery staff organized activities, games, and music, providing an opportunity to celebrate the small yet significant lessons learned by the young environmentalists.
The turnout and enthusiasm from families were overwhelming!
The event aligns with Maple Bear UAE’s eco-conscious ethos, emphasizing
sustainability in its instructional program and its operational and commercial footprint. Parents are also noticing the positive impact, with children eagerly sharing their newfound knowledge and habits related to environmental responsibility.
Fine Arts Class That Makes a Difference
Maple Bear Guatemala
Maple Bear Guatemala’s students recently undertook the project, “Pintando Sonrisas con Cascarones” (Painting Smiles with Eggshells), a Fine Arts initiative where they donated 2,834 creatively decorated eggshells to Guatemala’s AYUVI foundation. This foundation supports low-income families dealing with childhood cancer by providing essential therapy and chemotherapy.
In the Fine Arts class, students explored the philosophy that palliative art serves to help people heal. This experience not only enriched their understanding of the power of art but also highlighted the practical applications of their skills in making a positive difference in the world.
Each child prepared the shells at home, cleaning and decorating them with paint, confetti, and tissue paper and infusing them with hope and smiles. After being creatively adorned by the students, the donated shells played a crucial role in funding therapy and treatment for children with cancer.
The “Painting Smiles with Eggshells” project at Maple Bear Guatemala exemplifies how Fine Arts can be a powerful tool for social change, instilling in students a sense of purpose, empathy, and a broader understanding of their role as compassionate global citizens.
PISA 2022 RESULTS IN ARE
In an ever-evolving world, the importance of a robust education system in shaping the future workforce cannot be overstated. The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) serves as a critical barometer, gauging the competencies of 15-year-old students worldwide.
Canada’s participation in PISA 2022 represented its commitment to a collective effort toward benchmarking educational performance and policy-oriented international indicators of skills and knowledge - essential steps toward identifying the factors contributing to successful students and school systems.
Overall, Canada ranked in the top 10 of all 81 participating OECD member countries.
Across 10 Canadian provinces, approximately 23,000 students from 850 schools participated to represent a reliable sample covering English and French school systems.
Overall, Canada ranked in the top 10 of all 81 participating OECD member countries. The Canadian cohort showcased commendable proficiency across reading, mathematics, and science.
Interestingly, when looking closer at the provincial level, French language school systems (Quebec) had a greater proportion of students attaining the highest levels of performance in math. There is variability between provinces depending on how each Ministry of Education prioritizes certain aspects of learning.
The framework of the assessment incorporated the strength of key future-ready skills like critical thinking, creativity, research and inquiry, self-direction, initiative, persistence, information use and reflection.
The strength of the Canadian education system, evidenced by Canada’s PISA ranking, can give Maple Bear parents the confidence that the Maple Bear curriculum is developed with academic rigour and excellence.
In addition, Maple Bear’s curriculum and methodology deliver a strong program for all our students that incorporates the critical competencies needed to adapt and thrive in the constantly changing reality of today’s digitized and knowledge-driven society.
As the global education landscape evolves, PISA remains an invaluable tool for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders. At Maple Bear, recognizing the dynamic nature of education, our focus continues to ensure that our students are armed with the problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills necessary for a best-of-Canadian education, preparing them for a global future with competence, resilience and creativity.

An Interview with Chief Academic Officer Martine Lewis
Maple Bear Global Schools will be celebrating its 20th Anniversary in 2024. From modest beginnings in India and Brazil, it has evolved into one of the world’s leading global education brands, with over 400 schools in 39 countries. Dr. Martine Lewis was recently appointed Chief Academic Officer to guide the academic vision into the next 20 years. We reached out to Martine to learn more about what has shaped her as a leader and her vision for the future.
Q: Can you tell us about what inspired you to pursue a career in education?
A: After earning my Honours Bachelor of Arts, I taught English in Japan, sparking a passion for bilingual education and cross-cultural communication. I later pursued a Master of Education in the United States and, armed with my certificate, taught grade three in Ecuador. These early experiences laid the foundation for my career in education, fostering a commitment to lifelong learning and a vested interest in teaching and educational research.
Q: Given your extensive experience, what is your philosophy on education?
A: My experience in education has emphasized the importance of student-centred approaches and staying adaptable to evolving methodologies. I bring this insight to Maple Bear by working with the team to ensure we are integrating three primary objectives:
• Develop and support new and revised curriculum with personalized learning initiatives
• Foster a culture of continuous professional development
• Ensure continued excellence and quality in all aspects of the Maple Bear programs
These objectives will be supported by integrating and leveraging the latest technology.
I am committed to enhancing Maple Bear’s educational framework with a focus on holistic education, global awareness, and inquiry-based learning to ensure we build the skills our students will need for their future.
An Interview with our CAO Martine Lewis
I am committed to enhancing Maple Bear’s educational framework with a focus on holistic education, global awareness, and inquirybased learning to ensure we build the skills our students will need for their future.
One of the most unique benefits of Maple Bear is that we have so many people working together globally to improve education for children around the world.
Q: What are the main trends and challenges that you see in education now?
A: Current trends in education include personalized learning approaches tailored to individual needs, an increased emphasis on developing key skills such as critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration, and a significant focus on technology integration. These trends represent a shift towards more dynamic and student-centered education models.
However, the education sector faces challenges in adapting to the rapid pace of technological advancements, ensuring equal access to educational resources across diverse demographics, and effectively preparing students for the complexities of an interconnected global landscape. Maple Bear Global Schools is working to strike a balance between innovation and addressing the needs of a diverse student population with a global footprint.
Q: How does your philosophy align with the Maple Bear program?
A: At Maple Bear, fostering a love of learning is central to our approach. We cultivate curiosity by integrating engaging curriculum and relevant content into our curriculum. We do this using the most up-to-date pedagogy. Our educators use interactive teaching methods, encouraging student participation and exploration.
We create a positive and supportive environment where students feel empowered to express themselves, fostering a sense of joy and curiosity that extends beyond the classroom. This approach instills a lifelong passion for learning in our students.
Q: As a parent and an educator, what advice can you share with our Maple Bear parents?
A: I want to congratulate them for choosing a school where their child can learn a second language; this is a gift for their future. I know first-hand how a second language can open a window to the world. As an educator and Mom of two school-aged children, I am fully committed to the bilingual learning environment. My children attend bilingual schools here in Ontario, becoming fluent French speakers - an official Canadian language. I know that the benefits of a second language go far beyond the classroom walls.
Q: How do you encourage children to do their best academically?
A: Encouraging children to excel academically at Maple Bear involves a multifaceted approach. We emphasize personalized learning, tailoring instruction to individual needs and learning styles. I am very excited to be part of this Maple Bear global family.
CONNECTING MATH TO OUR NATURAL WORLD
Close your eyes and picture math class. What comes to mind? Are you visualizing your experience as a student where you sat in rows, facing a chalkboard, listening to a teacher go through examples? Are you working on math problems by yourself?
At Maple Bear, we want to bring math to life!
FINDING THE JOY AND WONDER IN MATH
We know math is much more than answering questions and practicing arithmetic. Math is about having experiences and making connections. Sometimes, we connect math concepts to other mathematical ideas; other times, we join math to other subjects. We can also connect math to the world around us.
We encourage students who can find joy and wonder in mathematics. We want them to know that math is present in the world around us. We want them to have a natural curiosity, knowing that patterns and regularities in nature are truly mathematics at work!
MAKING CONNECTIONS BETWEEN MATH AND THE WORLD AROUND US
At Maple Bear, we help students make connections to the world around them. This approach was missing in traditional math classes, and it is likely why so many people have difficulty seeing mathematics in a positive way.
When Maple Bear teachers take students outside the classroom on a shape, number, or pattern hunt, they reveal just how much math there is around us. They will notice three-dimensional shapes on play structures and buildings and patterns on animals or flowers. They will see numbers everywhere and be inclined to count and notice patterns as they count.
Did you ever stop and wonder about the perfect symmetry of a leaf or flower? Have you ever been amazed at the height of a giant tree? Have you ever become curious about why a group of flowers has the exact same number of petals in each flower?
By Nicole Vinet, Lead Numeracy Consultant, Maple Bear Global Schools
A POSITIVE MATH MINDSET IS TIED TO CURIOSITY
Inspiring students to be curious about the math around them is essential in bringing math to life and developing a positive mathematical mindset from the beginning. These observation skills help students see math everywhere and can help them make sense of mathematics as they learn it.
As students get older, we can continue to make connections by asking them to notice and wonder about things in the outside world. If we start working with prisms and pyramids, why wouldn’t we show them some pictures from around the world and marvel at the perfect geometry we see in ancient architecture?
Maple Bear believes in partnering with parents to educate their children. Here are some ways parents can bring mathematics to life for their children:
• Weather forecasts use predictions and probability to forecast the weather
• Ancient cultures created perfectly symmetrical structures without the use of modern-day instruments
• The hexagon shape of snowflakes displays beautiful symmetry
• Bees make honeycombs with perfect tessellations
• Waves make patterns in the water
• Fibonacci Spiral patterns can be found everywhere in nature
• Spots or stripes create patterns on animals
MATH CAN BE EXPERIENCED BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
We do not have to limit these discussions to math class. Awareness and drawing attention to mathematical situations when you see them is what is important. Math problems and practicing math have their place, but without any joy or connection, the wonder and beauty of math will be lost.
Let’s make it a habit to search for math in the world around us!
at Maple Bear Global Citizens
At Maple Bear, our mission is to prepare students to become responsible, adaptable, and compassionate global citizens.
We believe that educating the next generation extends beyond academic subjects to include personal growth, character development, and global awareness. By integrating both soft skills and academic rigor, we help students build the skills necessary to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
BUILDING RESPONSIBILITY AND GLOBAL AWARENESS
From the earliest years, Maple Bear students learn personal responsibility as part of their daily routines. In addition to fostering responsibility within the classroom, we cultivate global awareness by connecting learning with real-world issues. Skills like empathy, collaboration, and resilience are embedded in our curriculum, making character-building just as essential as academic achievement.
Our program emphasizes the importance of tolerance, mutual respect, and leadership. As students grow, they engage in community service and social responsibility initiatives, developing a deep sense of empathy and social commitment that will guide them as they become future leaders.
Our program emphasizes the importance of tolerance, mutual respect, and leadership
A CURRICULUM ALIGNED WITH THE FUTURE-READY SKILLS
Canada has been a pioneer in adapting its educational system to emphasize on the FutureReady Skills. Since 1994, Canadian education has focused on equipping students with the skills needed for future success, a model that Maple Bear embraces wholeheartedly. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) identifies key competencies, organized into three main groups: Life Skills, Learning Skills, and Literacy Skills.
THE MAPLE BEAR CURRICULUM IS DESIGNED TO EMPOWER STUDENTS WITH:
Life Skills: Flexibility, leadership, productivity, risk-taking, and social skills.
Learning Skills: Critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication. Literacy Skills: Proficiency in information, media, and technology. These skills foster adaptability and prepare students to navigate a rapidly changing envonment.
Our emphasis on future-ready skills also encourages innovation and creativity, which are vital for addressing complex challenges and driving progress across all fields.
EMBRACING FUTURE-READY SKILLS
With the rapid pace of technological advancements and shifts in the job market, future-ready skills like critical thinking and problem-solving are essential. Maple Bear’s approach equips students with digital proficiency, including data analysis, coding, and digital communication, which are increasingly in demand. But perhaps most importantly, we foster a mindset of continuous, independent learning. This lifelong learning attitude is crucial for students to stay competitive and adaptable in their careers and lives.
Our emphasis on future-ready skills also encourages innovation and creativity, which are vital for addressing complex challenges and driving progress across all fields. By cultivating these skills, Maple Bear prepares students not just to succeed academically but to lead, create, and make a positive impact in the world.

High School Students Enhance Life at School
Maple Bear Valinhos
The Junior Councilor Club at Maple Bear Valinhos (Brazil) is tasked with finding ways to improve the life of their school community.
Choosing to focus on recycling due to the substantial amount of paper consumption within the school, the group aimed to enhance the existing recycling program. While the school already had a recycling initiative, it needed to be more robust.
The implemented changes included redirecting kitchen leftovers to the compost used for the school vegetable garden, which is maintained by Year 1, 3, and 4 students.
Paper recycling boxes were introduced in every classroom, and the pages from the Student Learning Materials (SLMs) were repurposed as draft papers for students or printables. Students also recycle binders from their SLMs and repurpose boxes.
The Young Councilor Club students have also taken on the responsibility of informing the student body through assemblies and monthly updates.
What began as a project to strengthen the recycling program has evolved into a more extensive endeavour, contributing to the sustainability of their learning environment.
Entrepreneurship that Aims To Serve Others
Maple Bear Chihuahua
Maple Bear Chihuahua (Mexico) has created a unique initiative called Programa Emprendedor Social (Social Entrepreneurship Program). It helps reinforce their entrepreneurship program and foster the values of generosity and gratitude in children.
During this event, the students, with the help of their parents, create a mini-company, determine their product offering, set the prices and then sell their wares (a selection of food or toys they have made) to their classmates at the Entrepreneur Fair.
The unique thing about this initiative is that all profits are used to support social causes or charities. This year, all donations went to CRIT Chihuahua, an organization dedicated to children and teens with disabilities, cancer and autism.
What an exceptional educational experience for these students that goes beyond theory, instilling entrepreneurial skills and a genuine commitment to the well-being of others.
CANADIAN CAMPS SUMMER & WINTER
Nurturing Minds and Embracing English Fluency
How do you combine the benefits of travel, the thrill of adventure, and the essence of Canada while building your English language fluency?
The concept of holding summer camps in Canada was born out of a desire to provide a unique student experience that integrates the benefits of travel and adventure with a cultural and immersive English experience. In previous years, a range of ages from elementary to high school students participated in camps located at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia and at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario. Interacting with students from around the world and immersing themselves in Canadian culture while improving their English fluency is such a rewarding experience.
We are looking at creative ways to build camp programs in both winter and summer months that meet a variety of interests and hobbies, offer specialized courses and excursions, and, of course, provide English language fluency opportunities.
The benefits of blending travel with distinctive Canadian adventures, interesting courses, entertaining activities, fun games and tours truly contribute to an enriching and memorable experience for all participants!
In July 2024, Maple Bear is excited to offer a specialized camp for over 50 high school students that sold out within weeks.

Acquisition of Bilingualismculture
More than learning a language, students are exposed to a multicultural environment with significant cognitive development gains
For Canadian educators, the term bilingualism means more than just learning a second language. Bilingualism is an approach, not an end in itself. It is about an opportunity for students to learn while being completely immersed in a second language. This gives them exposure to a multicultural environment, naturally developing the ability to think in another language and enhancing the capacity to adapt quickly and comfortably to different contexts.
THIS IS WHY THE NATURE OF CANADIAN EDUCATION
is built upon a multicultural approach. Since its foundation in 1867, Canada has had two primary languages, English and French. The country has also welcomed immigration and diversity. During different migratory movements, the government took measures to receive and integrate these new Canadian families. Education is this process's primary tool, always seeking to understand the families and students' needs and by adopting strategies focused on practical learning using perception, experimentation, and sharing. This is the

fundamental difference from "learning English" to "learn in English."
At the end of the 1960s, while establishing the obligation for all Canadian Federal Organizations to offer support to its citizens in both French and English, The Official Languages Act helped spread the concept that bilingualism means not just developing fluency in a second language, but having two officially recognized native languages.
MAPLE BEAR'S METHODOLOGY AIMS TO CREATE CONNECTIONS
and a favourable environment for the student's development. "When being immersed in an environment where a new language is used, children gradually adopt the language. They do this not only by memorizing vocabulary and grammar structures but by truly assimilating the nuances and subtle meanings of the language in an effective and definitive form", explains Cintia Sant'Anna, Maple Bear Academic Director.
One of the experts of this method is the Canadian lecturer, writer, and educator Michael Fullan. He highlights the importance of the 6C`s: Character Education, Citizenship, Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, and Critical Thinking. Fullan, the author of Deep Learning, states that the anticipated result from this model is that students care more for school and for life. They also learn to think about how to make a difference and how to help humanity.
Maple Bear takes bilingualism to another level, going beyond linguistic teaching. Maple Bear provides an education focused on research, citizenship, and entrepreneurship. These skills can make all the difference in a child's life.
Many Multiculturalism viewpoints
We live in a borderless world. People from many different backgrounds and cultures interact, build relationships and work in a collaborative way. They make use of this richness and variety to innovate and to create outstanding solutions. In this way, knowledge from different cultures is used to benefit other societies.
Since the country’s birth, multiculturalism is one of Canada’s foundations. Among several other aspects, Canada has one of the world’s most inclusive educational models in the world, according to PISA – Programme for International Student Assessment. This approach is influential in preparing children for the challenges and opportunities they will meet during their lives.
STUDENTS IN CANADA LEARN FROM AN EARLY AGE TO PRACTICE EMPATHY and to value the differences in others - two fundamental socio-emotional abilities that enable them to become successful students and promising professionals. Along with learning traditional subjects, children get the world view that every person has different abilities, knowledge and perspectives. Most importantly, they understand that everyone can make a positive contribution to society.
Maple Bear schools teach these concepts in different ways. Starting with appropriate questions for each age range, the students research cultural expressions

in both national and international communities. At the same time, they develop curricular strategies and competencies.
Maple Bear complies with the national curriculum requirements of the countries where it operates; however, it doesn’t limit itself to these requirements. The schools are connected to a more global vision and present-day values. Canada’s effort in research and in methodology development is an opportunity for students around the world. The school integrates and widens the curricula of each country.
Maple Bear prepares immersion programs for every regional reality, implementing a customized version in every situation. More than a successful classroom model, the school prepares its students for the world, personally, professionally and emotionally.
Safety Security at all levels
Safety” and “Security”. In English, the word “secure” is related to an almost intangible, conceptual perception of security, whereas “safe” has a more concrete connotation. The word safe is used to describe an environment that follows safety standards, without putting the people within the environment at risk. At the Maple Bear schools, “safety” and “security” hold the same importance and are complementary.
THE GOAL OF THE SCHOOLS IS TO CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT FREE FROM DANGER or threat to the physical health of the children, while also creating a sense of comfort so that, inside the school, the children are protected and are free to experiment, learn and develop. We do this by constantly planning, supervising and organizing all the spaces in the school to ensure ideal conditions are set for learning activities and games to happen.
At Maple Bear, physical safety and emotional and intellectual security are various aspects with the same focus
At Maple Bear, physical safety and emotional and intellectual security are various aspects with the same focus: help students develop their highest potential with autonomy. This is possible because every student is unique, and the school understands their individual needs. Our students do not only need to be in a physically secure environment
that provides them with the supportive conditions to study and play safely, free from accidents, but above all, our students need to feel emotionally comfortable, safe, happy and welcome within our school.
To make safety a priority, everyone actively participates in ensuring standards are maintained.
Non-verbal language”, for example, is a commonly used term to describe the way our body moves and sends a particular message, where words are not necessarily expressed.
The acquisition of language by children is influenced by multiple factors, ranging from genetic to interactional and environmental aspects. There is also a consensus that children go through the same stages of acquisition at approximately the same periods in their lives. We, as human beings, are social beings. We thrive while living in community.
Children who are placed in a community that uses a specific language for communicating will naturally be exposed to learning and will consequently develop their skills in this language. The immersive environment provides the platform from which language becomes an important tool for participation.
CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT CONDUCIVE TO BILINGUAL LEARNING IS ESSENTIAL since this will encourage children to use all the competencies they have already acquired. The role of teachers is crucial in this regard. They are the ones who build a safe and stimulating environment that positively influences the degree of involvement and motivation of the students, in addition to regulating their levels of anxiety and self-confidence.
The foundation, especially for young children, is establishing a context of immersion, so that English is learned in a way that is similar to the native language –the students’ mother tongue. Experiencing
real learning situations, consequently life situations, in two different languages, is the major strong point of a program that is consistent and aligned with Canadian educational principles, a bilingual nation in its makeup.
AT MAPLE BEAR, READING IS NURTURED STARTING AT A YOUNG AGE
- 6 months of age in a fun and pleasant way. The content presented to the children is thematic and combines knowledge and skills related to language, mathematics, science, technology, social studies, music, and the arts.
Through specific techniques, and seeking to work on specific skills, it is possible to develop critical thinking in children from a very early age. This is because, even with the few abstraction skills that young children have, they can already make connections between stories told by teachers and their own lives, for example. Over time, as they mature, the ability for abstraction increases and the connections become more complex.
The development of critical thinking
stems from the possibility of participating, interacting and contributing to problem solving. These challenging situations are considered ideal for learning the necessary skills and competencies to work in collaboration with others. Analytical capacity and the ability to actively participating in solving problems, by identifying them and coming up with hypotheses, is not limited to learning languages, but also relates to other subjects, such as mathematics and science. So, students develop the ability to communicate adequately, under various circumstances, adapting to be understood.

Language Much more than what is spoken
Reading Introduction to... Reading with Concrete Results
Reading is taken seriously at Maple Bear from an early age. The introduction to reading occurs gradually, with a priority placed on language. Children learn to read and develop a passion for reading, which is the gateway to learning throughout life. The Maple Bear program is child-centered, and language is a priority, with reading and writing at the core of the curriculum.
It is no coincidence that, during their early school years, the children read a book a day in the classroom. Teachers guide small children into the magical world of books and, little by little, introduce topics such as the names of authors, illustrators, publishing houses, literary genres, and others. The main strategies adopted by Maple Bear to nurture young readers are interactive, shared, guided and independent forms of reading. They provide support for students to achieve comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and vocabulary.
THESE STRATEGIES ARE USED PERIODICALLY, COMBINED WITH THEMES AND PROJECTS
from the Canadian teaching methodology. This variety enables students to participate in oral reading sessions with proficient readers, shared reading with classmates and individual reading, according to each one’s ability.
As they become more mature readers, the teacher’s approach changes, but the main goal is to
continue to encourage reading. The more children acquire complex thinking skills, the easier it is for them to consolidate what they have learned and to apply this knowledge in a more sophisticated way. Although thinking skills on their own are not enough to make a child an effective reader, they are essential for the reading process. Complex thinking is what enables children to reach the necessary cognitive level for reading.
Even though it is the responsibility of teachers to promote reading in the classroom, in every age group, the roles of parents at home is crucial. The family is an extremely important partner in this reading journey. Children, first of all, learn through example, so parents and guardians should read to children, read with children and be seen reading at home.
Maple Bear takes bilingualism to another level, going beyond linguistic teaching.
SINCE PARENTS ARE NOT ALWAYS AT HOME, IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THEIR GUARDIANS (uncles/aunts, nannies or grandparents) take on the role of readers to instill a joy for reading. A story can turn into a play, in which each person becomes a character; you can change the beginning or end of the story, change the names of the characters, or make up your own book. The possibilities for strengthening the habit of reading are countless.
Teaching mathematics at Maple Bear occurs gradually starting with preschool. Students are encouraged to recognize elements from objects found in their daily lives and make connections with the content presented in the classroom. At first, they are introduced to math in a tangible and fun way, through objects they can handle. Little by little, as the students’ ability for abstraction increases, they are introduced to mental and more complex math.
This process of teaching math in the Maple Bear classrooms starts off by establishing connections between what students bring from their personal experiences and what is addressed in class. As children’s thought processes change, moving from the concrete to abstract realm, the subject of math is continuously redirected, moving from the handling of materials, whether structured or not, to graphic forms, until achieving the sophistication of mathematical language.
AT THE ELEMENTARY EDUCATION LEVEL, THE CHILDREN CONSOLIDATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE
of the decimal number system and how it works and start using different strategies and expanding their repertoire to solve challenges that are presented.
A challenge that is skillfully handled by educators is making math something stimulating for children. First, it is important to make it relevant and relatable to their daily lives. For example, with small children, we can count parked cars on a street and discover whether the result is even or odd. Another way of doing this is to encourage learning math at home.
Families can encourage mathematical learning by helping the children apply what they learn at school to day-to-day life at home. Counting toys before putting them away, adding or subtracting socks while folding laundry, or dividing fruits among family members, are some examples of making mathematics an active and fun element in children’s lives. Organizing toys in sequence or putting together the family’s event calendar are other activities that make learning math more meaningful.
A key ingredient in learning math is the challenge. The more students feel challenged to solve a problem, the stronger the desire to do it. For this reason, math

classes are always based on challenging situations. And the activities are done in groups. Thus, the children can tap into their previous knowledge and, by discussing and sharing information with other students, they are able to arrive at conclusions. Math is not a question of ready-made rules, but is presented as a discovery, the building of knowledge that teachers help create and mediate.
As they learn math, students become more confident, since they achieve new levels of logical reasoning and learn to relate to situational problems in a more natural way, with the goal of solving them.
A source of fun and learning Mathematics
Science A breeding ground for young scientists
The study of sciences will always be important for children to help them observe the world in a totally new, more comprehensive and richer way, understanding every detail and being able to perceive concepts in practically everything. Taking advantage of the precise and attentive outlook of young children is a mission that Maple Bear educators love to embrace.
From the Early Toddler level, there are initiatives to spark the scientific curiosity of students. The units of the program encourage observation of facts and phenomena from

nature. Children learn, from an early age, to use observation as a scientific exercise. They conduct experiments to identify physical and chemical changes, as well as learn about the behavior of living creatures in various current and ancient environments.
Empirical knowledge, that which is experienced in practice through experiments that the children themselves carry out, evolves gradually and makes way for knowledge based more on scientific theories.
EVERYTHING IS DONE IN A STEP-BY-STEP PROCESS so that the children do not lose their genuine curiosity for science.
The setting for the classes is always inspiring. From libraries to labs, and comfortable recreational areas to classrooms, every space is designed to facilitate collaborative projects and activities.
In this setting, teachers play a very active role in that they must also have an inquisitive nature in order to engage the children’s attention, at every stage of development.
Canadian Education foster lifelong student success
Q: How does Canadian Education foster lifelong student success?
A: On a consistent basis, the Canadian education system is proving to be amongst the most successful and resilient in the world. According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), fifteen year old students consistently demonstrate outstanding results in reading comprehension, math and science. Thus Canada is ranking among the top five performing countries in the world and number one among the English speaking countries.
The Canadian curriculum is designed so that all students are able to achieve their greatest potential and become lifelong learners. The “Learn – to – learn” method is the most commonly used rather than simple transference of information, which can quickly become outdated or irrelevant.
Canada is a pioneer in implementing education strategies that focus on developing specific competencies which collectively fall under the 21st century skills. The objective is to build capacity in areas that promote a resilient society capable of effectively adapting to rapid change. It represents a shift in emphasis from the instruction of facts to a model which focuses on competencies such as critical thinking, character building, creativity, innovation, as well as digital and computer literacy.
Acquiring these qualities starts at a very young age. They are essential to be successful in today’s competitive international job market and prepare the children for success in the future, which brings unprecedented pace of social, economic and technological changes.

Additional resources and well-trained staff are offered for students with learning exceptionalities and challenges.
Q: How does the Canadian approach create world leading results, regardless of a students’ country of origin, socio-economic status, or cultural background?
A: According to British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), as well as other publications, Canadian students are among the best educated in the world, and far ahead of the US and European countries. The inclusive and equitable education model based on child centered approaches, that leaves no one behind, allows students to develop their skills and achieve high results on a consistent basis.
In Canada, newly arrived children from immigrant families, including those that do not speak or have limited English, integrate with no major adjustment issues and perform at the same level as their classmates within a three-year period. This result is achieved by providing equal and fair opportunities to all children. Additional resources and well-trained staff are offered for students with learning exceptionalities and challenges. As a result, the system supports all learners from a variety of cultural backgrounds and facilitates smooth transition into the job market and broader society.
Q: How does Maple Bear differ from other schools and the education system at large, and what value can it bring to its students?
A: Maple Bear brings the best of the Canadian methodology and bilingual education. It is based on discovery, experimentation and solving problems. On the basis of these principles, traditional teaching methods, are replaced by thought-provoking education, which encourages students to explore the environment around them to find answers to questions that are truly relevant to their daily lives.
Maple Bear offers the most modern approach in education available world-wide today. It is child-centered, supplemented with a project-based approach. It incorporates themes of social responsibility and community service so that students feel a sense of commitment to their local settings. By using hands-on experience, it better prepares them to be critical thinkers and future leaders.
Maple Bear schools around the world benefit from our large Canadian academic faculty, including trainers, curriculum writers and quality assurance personnel.
The Maple Bear program is a living, breathing curriculum that is constantly being updated.
Joining the Maple Bear global network means receiving constant support, sharing best practices in eduction and creating great opportunities for local teachers.
Maple Bear doesn’t just prepare children for their next grade; it prepares them for life.
At Maple Bear, we believe that education should prepare children for the future, and bilingualism is a significant part of that. For Turkish families, the combination of a high-quality Canadian curriculum delivered in both English and Turkish offers the best of both worlds. Children not only develop strong communication skills in two languages but also benefit from a global perspective, which is essential in our interconnected world. Moreover, the Maple Bear methodology emphasizes immersion. This means children naturally learn English in a way like how they acquire their first language. It’s not just about speaking another language; it’s about thinking and problem-solving bilingually. This ability can open countless doors for Turkish students in their future education and careers.
We focus on a holistic approach to education. At Maple Bear, we teach children how to think, not what to think. Our classrooms encourage critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving—skills that are crucial for the jobs of tomorrow, many of which don’t even exist yet.
THE IMPORTANCE OF FOSTERING CREATIVITY AND CRITICAL THINKING IN YOUNG LEARNERS

how to analyze information, evaluate options, and make decisions. These skills are built into every subject we teach, from science to arts to language learning.
For example, in a science class, instead of memorizing the parts of a plant, students might be asked to grow their own plants and observe how different conditions affect growth. This hands-on, inquiry-based approach not only deepens their understanding but also fosters curiosity and independent thinking.
FAMILIES HAVE HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Academic excellence is indeed a priority for Maple Bear. Our curriculum is created in Canada and aligned with global standards, ensuring students achieve high levels of competency in core subjects like mathematics, science, and literacy.
At the same time, we go beyond traditional academic metrics. We focus on developing well-rounded individuals who excel not only academically but also socially and emotionally. Emotional intelligence, leadership, and empathy are integral to our teaching approach, as we believe they are as important as academic skills for success in life.
Another key advantage of Maple Bear is our global network. With schools in over 39 countries, our students and educators benefit from an international exchange of best practices and ideas.
Turkish families can take comfort in knowing their children are part of a worldwide community of learners, with opportunities for cross-cultural interactions and collaborations. This network helps students develop a truly global mindset while staying rooted in their local culture.

confidence, and a love for learning that lasts a lifetime. I would also encourage parents to visit a Maple Bear school, observe the classrooms, and speak with our educators. Seeing our approach in action often provides the best insight into how we help children thrive.
MAPLE BEAR VISION IN TURKEY
Our vision is to become a trusted partner for Turkish families in providing world-class education. We aim to expand our network of schools across Turkey, making Maple Bear accessible to more communities. At the same time, we will continue to adapt and innovate to meet the evolving needs of Turkish students and families.
We’re not just building schools; we’re building bridges to the future. I’m excited to see how Maple Bear can empower Turkish children to achieve their fullest potential.
Global Connections for Sustainability
Global Sustainability Goals and Student Collaboration Come Together to Create a Unique Education Program
The Maple Bear methodology features the best of the Canadian curriculum. And the long-standing Canadian attitude toward multiculturalism is infused within our Maple Bear curriculum, providing our students with these Canadian cross-cultural skills.
This attitude, along with Canada's approach to world security, created the foundation of peacekeeping to emerge in 1956. This connection between the Canadian value of multiculturalism and Canada’s role in the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping efforts is a hallmark of the multicultural approach to teaching and learning.
We at Maple Bear are bringing that connection between multicultural peace and understanding and the work of the United Nations together in our newest curriculum innovation – the Maple Bear Global Connections for Sustainability Program (GCP).
HOW CAN WE NURTURE CROSS-CULTURAL CONNECTION AND ENHANCE AWARENESS WHILE EXPLORING THE BIGGEST ISSUES THAT FACE THE LIVELIHOOD OF OUR PLANET TODAY?
Through the GCP, Maple Bear seeks to connect students virtually around the world and facilitate exploration, discussion and collaboration centred around the 17 United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
A digital platform incorporating the latest online learning approaches, the GCP seeks to have Maple Bear students travel the world without ever leaving the classroom.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) will be the basis of their exploration. These goals are aimed at achieving peace and prosperity worldwide by addressing key global issues like climate change, quality education and poverty.
The students with the guidance of our teachers will look at the SDG topics and unearth the critical issues around a specific goal as it relates to their country.
Action research will be an important step in this one-of-a-kind program, as students make decisions about actions they can take to improve the specific goal in their area.
THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR REAL-WORLD WORK AND CHANGE ARE NOT ONLY ENGAGING BUT ALSO TRANSFORMATIONAL. Students will not only be cultivating their
collaborative and inquiry skills, but also their social justice and advocacy skills. The excitement of improving one’s own home and having the power to do so is inspiring and builds a sense of eagerness to learn and to be empowered to make change.
THROUGHOUT THIS PROJECT, STUDENTS WILL BE CONNECTING with similar-aged students in countries like Brazil, India and Vietnam. Paired with classes who are studying the same SDG from their own regional perspectives, students will present their
findings to one another through video conferences.
Ultimately Maple Bear students will be making the UN sustainability goals a reality in their communities and sharing their research and results with their partner school on the other side of the globe.
This one-of-a-kind program will develop lifelong inquiry skills about topics that matter in our modern world while at the same time instilling a multicultural approach to collaboration and problem-solving.
Maple Bear students worldwide will set a new standard for what it means to be a global citizen.

Introduction to Early Childhood Education
At Maple Bear, we believe every child deserves the best possible start in life. Early childhood, especially the years from birth to five, is a time of rapid development, with experiences during this period laying the groundwork for a child’s future learning and development. Our curriculum for is designed to support each child in reaching their full potential by providing a foundation for successful progress through school and life. We set high standards to ensure each child is fully prepared for elementary school.
IMPORTANCE OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
The period from birth to age five is critical for brain development, with significant growth and the acquisition of foundational skills. During the first 1000 days, the child’s sensory and emotional systems develop, while the next 1000 days support advanced cognitive and social skills, like decision-making and planning. Early childhood is also the time for acquiring essential cultural tools, including language and numeracy.
Our Guiding Principles
There are three fundamental aspects of the Maple Bear approach to Early Childhood Education, and they are:
Incorporating eight developmental areas into curriculum and daily plans.
Identifying and striving to achieve the learning outcomes by the end of Kindergarten.
Assessing and reporting achievement.
THE ROLE OF PLAY IN LEARNING
Play is an essential part of Maple Bear’s early childhood curriculum, as it promotes language, thinking, and emotional development. Maple Bear Middle School Program
Welcome to our Program
At Maple Bear, we are committed to educating the whole child – academically, emotionally, socially, and physically. Our Middle Years Program is designed for students aged 10 to 14, a period of significant growth and development. Building on the foundation established in our Elementary Program, we offer a curriculum grounded in the Canadian educational approach, with a focus on hands-on, challenging, and relevant learning. Our goal is to equip students with essential skills in literacy, math, science, and technology, alongside fostering critical and creative thinking to prepare them for high school and beyond.
UNDERSTANDING THE MIDDLE YEARS LEARNER
Students in their middle years are seeking independence, yet they still require guidance and a sense of belonging. Research shows that students are more successful academically and socially when they feel connected to their school environment. Our Middle Years Program creates a learning community that values and respects each student’s unique developmental stage, empowering them to grow confidently and succeed.
OUR EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
We believe in fostering the whole child by encouraging students to explore their interests and develop their talents in a balanced, supportive environment. Language development is central to our approach. Core subjects like English Language Arts, Math, and Science are taught in this second language, while History, Geography, Physical education, and the arts are taught in the student’s native language. This structure strengthens students' linguistic skills while enhancing cultural understanding.
INSTRUCTIONAL APPROACH
The Maple Bear Middle Years Program combines direct instruction with inquiry-based learning in core areas like math, science, and English Language Arts:
Direct Instruction: This foundation provides structured teaching for essential skills and concepts, fostering critical thinking and communication. In math, students gain a strong grasp of number sense, algebra, geometry, and data management. Science instruction covers core topics in biology, chemistry, physics, and earth sciences, while ELA instruction focuses on grammar, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills.
INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING:
Once students have mastered foundational skills, we encourage active, exploratory learning where they can apply their knowledge to real-world problems. In math, students engage in problem-solving and practical applications; in science, they conduct hands-on experiments to use the scientific method; and in ELA, they explore various texts, express their interpretations, and communicate ideas creatively.
By blending these approaches, students develop essential skills and gain the critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving abilities they need as they prepare for high school.

Maple Bear Sofia Celebrates the Spirit of Giving
The 2024 Maple Bear Terry Fox School Run in Sofia, Bulgaria, was a resounding success, uniting students, teachers, families, and the community in a heartwarming celebration of empathy and support for those in need. The event brought together Maple Bear School, Maple Bear Kindergarten, and Maple Bear CEE, highlighting our commitment to values that extend beyond academic achievement.
On a sunny autumn day, over 350 participants, aged 2 to 80, came together for a vital cause: raising funds for cancer research and honoring Terry Fox’s legacy. No matter the distance or obstacles, the spirit of solidarity was palpable. Together, we raised funds for the Bulgarian Joint Cancer Network, the Terry Fox Foundation's partner in Bulgaria for cancer research.
A LEGACY OF HOPE
The Terry Fox Run symbolizes hope and the strength of the human spirit, serving as a powerful reminder that there are no limits to what we can achieve. Each year, students and staff from Maple Bear Schools around the world participate in this cherished fall tradition, raising essential funds for cancer research. This year, our Sofia community not only honored Terry Fox’s vision of a cancer-free world but also embraced lessons in resilience, humility, and solidarity. Through participation, students learn that every step contributes to a larger cause and that education extends beyond academics to include the significance of social responsibility.

THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND THE RUN
As Carl Jung wisely said, "Children are educated by what the grown-up is and not by his talk." This philosophy shapes our educational approach, emphasizing that students learn the importance of compassion and giving back through our actions. At Maple Bear Sofia, we believe empathy, courage, and perseverance are crucial skills for future leaders. Terry Fox exemplified these qualities, which we strive to instill in our students.
EDUCATION FOR IMPACT
Our educational philosophy at Maple Bear Sofia empowers students with critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability. We believe education should also instill a deep sense of responsibility, preparing students to succeed personally while positively impacting their communities. We emphasize thinking globally and acting locally, helping students understand that their success is intertwined with the well-being of others.
SHAPING COMPASSIONATE LEADERS
In the 21st century, leadership extends beyond knowledge; it encompasses empathy, inclusivity, and social responsibility. At Maple Bear Sofia, we blend academic rigor with a strong commitment to social impact, equipping students with the tools they need to thrive in a world that values contribution alongside intelligence. By fostering a culture of giving back and instilling these essential values, we prepare our students for the future and empower them to shape a better world.
Together, we are building a legacy of hope and compassion that will inspire our current and future students and the wider community. We look forward to continuing this tradition in the years ahead!

Our parents about us:
I am a happy parent of a happy Maple Bear toddler student! I can not thank more the whole Maple Bear team for all the cares, all the hard work and dedication to the children. Thank you for being such a positive influence in the life of my kid. I am extremely happy that my child has the opportunity at that early age to be already speaking in two languages, to discover the world in a bilingual, stimulating and safe environment which challenges all senses. I am convinced that choosing the Canadian methodology was the best choice for my kid. I see her grow in her development with each day, i see her handling life situations with an ease and in a positive attitude. Keep the great job you are doing!

KATOWICE, Poland
Celebrating the School and Kindergarten’s First Anniversary
On September 2, 2024, Maple Bear Katowice School and Kindergarten celebrated its first anniversary. Established in September 2023, it became the first Maple Bear school in Poland. “A year ago, when we ceremoniously cut the ribbon alongside children, parents, Maple Bear guests from around the world, as well as our investors and city officials, we hoped Maple Bear would become a place where children from Katowice and the region could develop their talents and passions in an inspiring, bilingual environment,” said Grzegorz Esz, co-founder and CEO of Maple Bear Schools Poland. “Today, I am proud to say we have achieved this. Our school is growing and evolving, the children are enthusiastic about their classes, and parents recognize the importance of bilingual education in fostering future skills.”
FULL IMMERSION AND FUTURE-READY SKILLS
The school has built a strong reputation as an institution that upholds high teaching standards and places students at the center of the educational experience. Grzegorz Esz emphasized, “Improving our teachers’ skills is one of the key factors in delivering the highest quality education in our institutions. Thanks to international cooperation and ongoing academic support from the global Maple Bear network, the school in Katowice benefits from some of the best educational practices worldwide. What matters most to us, however, is that through full immersion, our students learn English in natural situations, becoming truly bilingual in a relatively short time.”

A unique environment built on mutual understanding
WHAT MAKES MAPLE BEAR KRAKÓW STAND OUT?
Q: How was the school received by parents?
MP: From the outset, the response to Maple Bear Kraków has been overwhelmingly positive. Parents are increasingly drawn to the values we promote: bilingualism, global awareness, and innovative teaching methods. Our school not only provides a strong academic foundation but also fosters emotional and social growth. Maple Bear Kraków is a community where respect, empathy, and cooperation thrive, creating an inclusive space that celebrates cultural diversity.
THE CANADIAN METHODOLOGY IN KRAKÓW
Q: What are the key elements of the Canadian approach implemented at Maple Bear?**
MP: At Maple Bear, our teaching philosophy emphasizes the skills essential for the 21st century— critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving. We encourage active, hands-on learning, fostering children’s natural curiosity and independence. Our goal is to help students develop a mindset that allows them to acquire knowledge and apply it in real-world contexts, empowering them to think critically and innovate.
Interview with Marta Pszczoła,
Director Maple Bear Krakow
We encourage active, hands-on learning, fostering children’s natural curiosity and independence.
Maple Bear Kraków, which opened in September 2024, currently operates as both a nursery and a preschool. Starting in September 2025, the school will expand to include a primary education program at its Saska Street 25 location. At the same time, construction will commence on a cutting-edge campus in Kraków’s Podgórze district. The driving force behind this ambitious project is Marta Pszczoła, the director of Maple Bear School and Kindergarten. An experienced and highly regarded educator, Marta has been instrumental in bringing Maple Bear’s globally recognized educational approach to Kraków.
We
Q: Do you use a curriculum from Canada?
MP: We blend the Polish core curriculum with elements of the Canadian education system, creating a program that meets local requirements while offering an international perspective. This dual approach inspires students to explore the world, appreciate the possibilities of science, and prepare for life in an ever-changing world. We are committed to providing a forward-thinking education that equips students for the future.
NURTURING YOUNG LEARNERS
Q: What activities are offered at the Maple Bear nursery?
MP: Our nursery activities are designed to support children’s holistic development. In addition to traditional subjects like literacy and numeracy, we focus on art, music, and movement, ensuring a playful and engaging learning environment. Art and music stimulate creativity and fine motor skills, while physical activities develop gross motor skills. A standout feature of our preschool is the custom-designed garden, where children enjoy outdoor learning and play, reinforcing their connection to nature.
EXPANDING INTO PRIMARY EDUCATION
Q: What will the transition to primary school look like?
MP:This is a milestone for us as we extend our offering to primary education. The primary school will continue operating at Saska Street 25, while construction of a modern campus in Podgórze will also begin, with completion expected in September 2027. The primary school will uphold the Maple Bear teaching philosophy, blending bilingual education with immersive, interactive learning. Our approach ensures a smooth and natural transition for children from kindergarten to primary school, gradually introducing advanced topics and methodologies.
This refined text maintains a professional tone, emphasizes Maple Bear’s innovative approach, and ensures clarity and engagement for prospective parents and stakeholders.
WHAT CURRICULUM WILL THE PRIMARY SCHOOL FOLLOW?
MP:While our primary school will adhere to Poland’s non-public school regulations, it will integrate the Canadian curriculum’s best practices. This hybrid model combines the Polish core curriculum with Canadian standards, emphasizing critical thinking, social skills, and digital literacy. Students will not only acquire knowledge but also learn how to analyze, evaluate, and solve problems. Additionally, our robust extracurricular programs provide opportunities for students to explore their interests and talents.
CHALLENGES AND FUTURE GOALS
Q: What challenges does Maple Bear Kraków face?
MP:One challenge is promoting the value of bilingual education, which is still uncommon in Poland. Many parents are unfamiliar with the benefits of the Canadian education model, which fosters creativity, critical thinking, and independence. Another challenge is ensuring continuous professional development for our teachers. As part of a global network, we provide regular training led by Canadian experts, enabling our staff to deliver the highest standards of education.

An Inspiring School in an Inspiring City
Maple Bear Wrocław opened on September 2, 2024, as the third Maple Bear school in Poland, joining the campuses in Katowice and Kraków. The international teaching team uses Canadian educational methods, providing children with full language immersion and the highest teaching standards. The ribbon-cutting ceremony welcomed parents and children, Maple Bear Polska investors, as well as city officials and community guests.
A NEW SCHOOL IN THE HEART OF WROCŁAW –FRIENDLY AND SAFE
The new Maple Bear school in Wrocław occupies a beautifully renovated historic building in the city’s heart, providing an excellent environment for both learning and play. True to Canadian teaching methodology, play is integrated as an essential part of education. The facility includes modern equipment, its own playground, and a gymnasium to support children’s holistic development. “Maple Bear Wrocław is more than a school – it’s a community that unites people from diverse cultures and backgrounds, built on mutual respect and understanding,” said Grzegorz Esz, co-founder and CEO of Maple Bear Poland. “We want our facilities to welcome everyone seeking knowledge in an atmosphere of cooperation and respect.”
“The opening of this school is not only an innovative educational offering for the people of Wrocław but also a symbol of openness, international cooperation, and cultural exchange,” emphasized Grzegorz Esz at the inauguration ceremony. “We believe Maple Bear Wroclaw’s presence in the city will enrich the local community with new perspectives and growth opportunities.”
Aligned with Canadian educational methods, teachers prioritize students’ multidirectional development.
FULL IMMERSION, DUAL CORE CURRICULUM, AND EXCELLENT EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
The curriculum blends Polish and Canadian educational standards in a hybrid model that combines local and global perspectives. English language learning is conducted through full immersion, where children learn language contextually rather than through traditional memorization. This approach enables them to become confident and comfortable with English naturally and intuitively.
Aligned with Canadian educational methods, teachers prioritize students’ multidirectional development. Children have numerous opportunities to explore their talents and grow into well-rounded, motivated learners. Teachers utilize Canadian textbooks, manipulatives, and inspiring extracurricular activities, including yoga, ballet, climbing, introductory robotics, chess, and encounters with exotic animals. Parents also appreciate the exclusive swimming sessions at one of Wrocław’s top pools.
Maple Bear’s network in Poland now includes three schools in Katowice, Kraków, and Wrocław, with more planned to open soon in Warsaw and Gdańsk. In Kraków, construction of a modern campus is underway, with a new primary school being built alongside the existing kindergarten and preschool facilities.

Our Maple Bear parents about us!
?What made you choose Maple Bear as the school for your child?
Claudie B.: Our main reason was to give our daughter a place where English would become a natural part of her daily life. We also wanted to make sure she gets the best education for her growth.
Jakub Š.: We have been studying the schools in Brno for a long time and still none of them fit 100%. Until we came across Maple Bear, which was just starting in the Czech Republic. It was a step into the unknown in a way, because this year's class is the first in Brno and the Czech Republic. However, we were reassured by the more than 20 years of history of this brand and also by the great plans for the future both in the Czech Republic and in neighbouring countries. In retrospect, we are very happy that we made this step because we see in our son how he goes to school every day with enthusiasm and in the afternoon we have to persuade him to go home. He has great friends at school, the teachers are amazing beings and great professionals because the kids love them, plus we are seeing how much new knowledge and skills our son is taking home.
Miroslava Ž.: The reason for choosing Maple Bear Preschool was mainly the professional approach to education and upbringing, which the director pleasantly surprised us with. We had really high expectations for both the education and the teaching of English, but also for the development of the child in his native language. As with only one of the many nurseries, we became convinced after the first close acquaintance that this was the right nursery for our offspring.
Julia O.: We were looking for a school with Czech roots but in-depth learning of English, so MB attracted our attention firsthand. The more we learned about the school, the more we got attracted to the child-oriented system and inspired and experienced teachers.
Vlastimil S.: There were more reasons. Respectful upbringing, great MB team, friendliness, foreign language (English), modern environment and no old stereotypes. In my opinion, it is the best that can be found in the Czech Republic.
Аctivities tailored to each child’s strengths and needs
Marissa, could you explain the Maple Bear approach to bilingual education and how it integrates the Canadian and Czech curricula?
M: Absolutely! At Maple Bear, we take a bilingual approach, meaning our students learn in both Czech and English. However, it’s not just about having classes in two languages; it’s about blending them in a way that feels natural and effective. We have both Czech and English teachers who collaborate closely, building lessons that complement each other. This way, when students have English lessons, they’re reinforced by related activities in Czech and vice versa.
Our curriculum is structured so that each language is used about 50% of the time, allowing students to develop strong skills in both languages. This seamless transition between Czech and English creates a rich learning environment where students feel comfortable and confident as they navigate their lessons.
Zuzana, could you explain how do Maple Bear teachers support young children in their transition from home to kindergarten, ensuring they feel comfortable and confident in this new environment?
Z: For children to feel safe, comfortable, and confident in kindergarten, they need trusting relationships with teachers and classmates - a process that can be challenging at first. To support this, Maple Bear teachers integrate social and emotional learning into daily routines and play, fostering a positive attitude toward school. Through activities tailored to each child’s strengths and needs, they ensure every child feels safe, accepted, and valued.
Many parents worry about how children transition between grades, especially in a bilingual environment. How does Maple Bear Brno handle this?
M: Yes, transitioning from kindergarten to elementary or from grade zero to grade one can be a big leap, but we’re prepared for it. For example, in grade zero, we focus on preparing children for elementary school by gradually introducing more structure while maintaining an engaging, play-based environment. Maple Bear provides us with a “roadmap” for each year, so we know where students should be by the end of the

year and can ensure they’re ready for the next grade.
For children joining us directly in grade one, we use the Canadian method of “differentiation.” This means we tailor our teaching to each child’s academic and emotional needs, so whether they’re new to the school or have been with us since kindergarten, they feel supported. We also regularly assess each student’s readiness and development through tools like the Czech iSophi assessments, which evaluate skills like fine motor abilities, attention span, and visual perception, giving us insight into what each child needs.
Play-based learning is often highlighted at Maple Bear. Can you explain what this means and how it fits into a structured educational program?
M: Play-based learning is indeed at the heart of our approach, especially in the early years. When we talk about play-based learning, we mean activities that are engaging and interactive but also designed with specific educational goals. For example, instead of simply listening to a lesson, children might work in a learning center where they explore materials that help them understand concepts in a hands-on way.
So, let’s say the topic is learning numbers. Rather than only teaching numbers on a board, we might set up a math station where children count objects or play games that involve number recognition. The idea is that they’re physically involved in the learning process, which deepens their understanding and keeps them engaged. This kind of learning builds curiosity, critical thinking, and social skills as they work with their classmates to solve problems.
Some parents might be concerned that play-based learning isn’t academically rigorous enough. How would you address that concern?
M: I completely understand that concern. In traditional settings, we’re used to children sitting at desks and listening to teachers for most of the day, but that isn’t always the best way to help young children learn. Maple Bear’s play-based approach
Our Maple Bear parents about us!
?How satisfied are you and your child with Maple Bear?
Claudie B.: We are very happy with Maple Bear Olomouc. Our daughter really enjoys going to school, and we can see how much she is growing and improving. The school offers many creative activities that have helped her progress.
Jakub Š.: We like Maple Bear’s approach to education, which develops children in every way and prepares them for the future. It was also important to us that it is not a purely international school, but a combination of Canadian and Czech schools and the teaching is half and half in Czech and English. Our family is not bilingual, so we were concerned that English would not be a barrier. However, our fears were not misplaced as our son was able to fit into the program with no problem and after 2 months he understands the basic instructions.
Miroslava Ž.: We are very happy with the school, both us and our children. The nursery has the order that every child needs at an early age, which combined with the amazing teachers is truly perfect. By having native speakers educating the children, my daughters find English language natural and look forward to every day.
Julia O.: For now we are very happy with our son going to Maple Bear Brno. He feels safe enough to open up. He learns a lot at lessons. He has friends and generally good relationships with his classmates. We specifically love all the extra-curricular activity the school organises for the kids. For us the most important fact is that in the morning our son is still happy to go to school.
Vlastimil S.: I am literally excited, together with my son, who looks forward to kindergarten every day and would like to visit it even on weekends.

Parents should actively foster their child’s English language skills and support their cognitive, emotional, and social development.
is intentional—our teachers carefully select activities to ensure they align with academic goals. In fact, research shows that children often learn more deeply when they’re actively engaged in tasks rather than passively listening.
For example, we might have a science unit where students are learning about the five senses. Rather than a lecture, we would set up stations where they can smell, touch, and taste different items, observing and discussing what they experience. This active involvement helps children grasp the concepts in a meaningful way and often makes the learning experience more memorable.
Could you share some tips for parents who want to support their child's bilingual education at home?
Z: Parents should actively foster their child’s English language skills and support their cognitive, emotional, and social development. They can encourage language learning outside of school by providing reading materials, facilitating pen-pal or online friendships, connecting with native speakers, arranging travel, enrolling in summer camps, and watching age-appropriate English videos. Regular communication with teachers about their child's progress is essential, and parents are encouraged to show interest in their child’s

learning journey, be patient, and provide encouragement.
Could you explain how do you assess student progress, and what methods do you use to ensure each child is meeting their individual learning goals?
Z: Assessment is an ongoing process that includes daily observation notes, portfolios showcasing students’ efforts and achievements, and report cards issued twice a year. The focus is on positive assessment that highlights each student's knowledge and capabilities based on their individual learning needs and goals. Parents are informed of students' progress digitally through Kinderpedia or during in-person meetings.
In your opinion, Zuzana, what sets Maple Bear apart from other educational systems, and how do these methods benefit students in the long term?
Z: Education should prepare children for the future. The uniqueness of the Maple Bear education system is rooted in Canadian bilingual teaching methodologies and best practices that align with the expectations of parents and local authorities. By incorporating 21st-century skills, it prepares children to meet tomorrow's challenges and become successful local citizens with a global perspective.

The Importance of Early Childhood Education and Its Impact on Society
Early childhood education (ECE) is a crucial stage in a child's development, shaping their personality, social skills, and foundational knowledge. It is during this period, especially in the first five years, that the brain undergoes rapid growth, forming approximately 1,000 trillion synapses by age three. This stage provides a unique opportunity to foster cognitive, emotional, and social growth through nurturing relationships and stimulating environments.
Research shows that quality early learning experiences are essential for a solid developmental foundation. These experiences, enriched by interactions with parents, teachers, and caregivers, enhance learning potential and mitigate the effects of toxic stress.

Investing in ECE yields significant societal benefits. It not only supports children’s growth but also enables parents to participate more fully in the workforce, boosting economic productivity.
At Maple Bear, we emphasize exploration, play, and interaction, highlight the importance of experiential learning. By integrating play into daily routines, children develop emotionally, socially, and intellectually, ensuring they are prepared for future challenges. Early education isn't just about learning—it’s about building a thriving community and society.
