Sanremo Product Manager Zamprogno

Let’s lighten the mood, turn off the air conditioning, grab some water, and remind ourselves that this is just a friendly chat on a hot June afternoon. So, let’s begin!

Zamprogno Andrea Zamprogno

Sanremo Product Manager

What wild animal best represents you? – I ask, mimicking the opening question of interviews by a well-known Italian journalist on the RAI network. Andrea looks at me in surprise, yet still searches within himself for an answer. … Wow! An animal?!

Silence. Laughter.

I was only joking, but let me ask you…

As opposed to the ibex, the company’s symbol, what animal would you represents you?

Ah! That’s a good comparison, and I can say that, just as the ibex strives to reach great heights, I see myself as ambitious and determined. Not selfishly, but in the sense of wanting to do things well — for the group, the company, or, more broadly, for the people around me. The ibex lives in groups, is loyal and helpful, yet also highly solitary. I can relate to that. Aside from moments of sharing, I am very happy on my own — I need solitude. I love being alone… and besides, I’m a Capricorn.

Tell us how you got here and what your role is within the company.

I joined Sanremo six years ago to replace the electronics engineer who had just left, so my work initially focused on the electronic development of the machines. The first projects I worked on were the X-One grinder and the Brave machine. Over time, I combined my purely technical role with the service and customer support, an area where I already had ten years of experience. I enjoy this part of the work because it allows me to express my relational and empathetic side. This wouldn't have been possible without the trust and support of CEO Carlo de Sordi and Danilo Llopis, who was Head of R&D at the time.

They believed in me, took me out of the technical office, sent me travelling across Italy and abroad (patiently waiting while I refreshed my English), and gave me the opportunity to engage directly with suppliers and later with customers at trade fairs.

I genuinely enjoy explaining our products’ features, highlighting their quality, and connecting with customers on an emotional level by sharing the story of our brand, who we are, and how we operate. I like to create an empathetic flow with customers, to truly understand their needs.

Let’s talk about machines and design. When does your expertise come into play?

I am involved in the project right from the very beginning. In the past, my contribution was more focused on the electronic side: determining the product’s initial features, detailing how the machine operates from the moment it is powered on, writing the technical specifications, involving the laboratory team and external experts to initiate the development process, straight through to the testing phase. I also engaged with distributors, taking the customers' needs into account — an invaluable opportunity to consider diverse requirements from across the globe.

It's a complex process within a constantly growing company, now managed by an even larger team. The electronics and connectivity division is now overseen by Marco De Gregorio [interview in Highlights #17], who is doing an outstanding job, while I have taken on the role of Product Manager. It's a more strategic role, less specific than before.

Today, my task is to define the product’s characteristics in terms of functionality and performance, with a keen eye on market trends, to propose products and improvements based on specific needs or trends that I identify at international trade fairs or among distributors, and to help shape the company’s five-year vision, in terms of both products and new market sectors.

What is the most significant innovation you have seen here?

The D8 machine was a remarkable innovation that continues to give us great satisfaction, but I would also include the Brave and the X-One grinder not merely because they were my first projects, but because they are products that appear to be simple, but are actually quite complex from an engineering perspective. The Brave has not yet entered the market, as the current context differs from when it was launched; however, it still holds many unexplored technologies that we hope to revisit soon.

Innovation. Tell us about a moment when courage was needed.

Innovation and courage go hand in hand, at least at this company, but if I had to choose, I would still say the X-One it is a truly unconventional product.

When we began in 2015, Sanremo had no experience designing grinders, but we had clear ideas and goals. We sought help from an external consultant, but it proved unproductive. So, we started from scratch, facing countless technical challenges, further complicated by the Covid pandemic, which completely reshaped the market and forced us to rethink the product. Learning from our setbacks, we began again and, thanks to Diego Salin and a dedicated team, we finally found the right path that led to its completion.

The story of this product reminds me of the Apollo 11 mission and the many obstacles encountered along the way; in the sense that the X-One’s tenacious design process taught us a great deal, united the team, showed us how to fight and persevere, and encouraged us to keep moving forward in the face of adversity. It was a formidable challenge that demanded immense courage.

What they say about him

He’s incredibly kind.

He’s always ready to help; anyone with a problem turns to Andrea, and he’ll respond at any hour.

He’s sincere, and if he scolds someone, it’s only with their best interests at heart.

He’s very shy.

Beneath his cuddly Winnie the Pooh appearance :) lies an extraordinary amount of determination and expertise.

When he goes to international trade fairs, he’s known for carrying a bag with a change of clothes for his morning run everywhere he goes, but the only running he ever ends up doing is when he gets out of bed in the morning. He has an infectious laugh.

He’s a diamond in the rough.

Are you athletic? What kinds of sports activities do you do?

You wouldn’t think it to look at me, but I’m an avid sportsman. When I was younger, I played basketball, and later I took up running for many years. I would set off at midnight to run through the Treviso hills, between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. Now I can’t run at night anymore, but early in the mornings I like to head out to the Montello hills near my home.

Running allows me to switch off, clear my head, focus on my breathing, or simply look ahead. While I run, I think more calmly. Sometimes I start with one perspective and finish with another, and that’s a good thing.

I played tennis regularly for about seven years. I really enjoy it because it’s a sport of resilience. It’s difficult to learn, but once you master the posture and find the right push, when you start placing your shots and thinking "this one goes here, that one goes there", you feel a sense of lightness and at the same time complete control.

It’s a bit like life. There's a strong psychological element with your opponent: the way they approach and look at you, the way fortunes shift from one moment to the next; you can play two brilliant sets and then collapse in the third, yet it’s still all you. You own all your shots! Tennis is fantastic.

Now that I work at Sanremo, I don’t have enough time to play, but I’m thinking about taking it up again because I really enjoy it and it’s a fun way to relieve stress and stay in shape. Having a tennis court here… would be wonderful!

Any other passions?

Mountain trekking, especially on long routes that take more than a day to complete.

For example, I’ve been to Mount Rasta in the Pasubio group, the Pederü and Sennes refuges in Val Badia, Malga Federa in the Ampezzo Dolomites, Mount Cervino, the Gorges du Verdon in Provence, and the heavily wooded Pyrenees in the Basque Country.

When I think back

Any plans for the future?

To get a new car and build a self-sustaining house in the middle of the Montello countryside, where I can keep a dog and perhaps other animals too. Here at Sanremo, I certainly want to help the company grow even more and raise awareness of the quality it can deliver. My dream? To bring the Brave to life!

Before I started working at Sanremo, when I would go to the bar for a coffee, I had no idea of the complexity of the product — the mechanics, the electronics, the communication, and even the strategy behind an espresso. It’s truly a fascinating world!

If you had to sum up Sanremo in just a few words?

…Hmm. So many things have to be condensed… instinctively I would say "my home, where I feel good" and "my refuge, where I find fulfilment". Both are places of free expression and are filled with wonderful people I can rely on.

How do you take your coffee?

Before I came to Sanremo, I used to take it with "pannetta" [single-serve cream], but now I take it black, bitter, and natural.

Stories to be discovered over a cup of coffee

Everest The growing mountain

The Tibetans call it Chomolungma, "Mother Goddess of the Universe". The Nepalese call it Sagarmatha, "Forehead of the Sky". Names that speak of a sacred and ancient bond with the highest mountain on Earth. The name "Everest", by contrast, comes from the West: in 1865, the Royal Geographical Society named it after George Everest, the British geographer who oversaw the great topographical surveys of India.

The first expedition dates back to 1921, led by Colonel Charles Howard-Bury. For decades, however, the summit remained unreachable: storms, avalanches, and oxygen shortages defeated more than ten expeditions, leaving behind tales of courage and tragedy

It was only on 29 May 1953 that Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay finally reached 8,848 metres, aided by oxygen tanks and equipment that today seems primitive: heavy boots, canvas tents, and hemp ropes. Almost twenty years later, in 1978, Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler accomplished the impossible: they summited Everest without breathing apparatus, proving that the human body could adapt to such extreme altitudes.

Meanwhile, the mountain has never remained still: tectonic plate movement continues to lift the Himalayas by about 4 millimetres per year. Today, Everest is officially measured at 8,849 metres – one metre higher than when this human adventure began. Climbing it means testing not only your own limits, but also those of a silent and unyielding mountain that relentlessly continues to grow.

Nature inspires us, Performance defines us.

Sanremo UK launches Barista Hub –an event celebrating the art of the barista

Barista Hub is a collective event designed to give baristas a voice and create a stronger, more connected community through training, sharing, and collaboration.

Collaboration and Creativity

Last August in London, the aroma of freshly ground coffee and the hiss of steam wands set the stage for the first Barista Hub event at the Sanremo UK showroom, where around 30 baristas brought the evening to life. It was a gathering designed not for managers or salespeople, but for the true protagonists of our industry: the baristas who prepare coffee every day.

The event was more than just a simple meet-up. It was a tangible response to a long-standing need on London’s vibrant coffee scene. The idea for Barista Hub arose from a simple truth: for many baristas, opportunities for professional growth often end at the doors of their own venues. There are few training facilities, and those that exist are often expensive, while major industry events tend to focus on high-level business issues, leaving baristas on the sidelines. Barista Hub has flipped this pattern on its head, creating an open and collaborative space where baristas can experiment, make mistakes, and learn from each other without pressure.

Industry support fuels creativity

The evening was powered by strong support from the industry. Heartlands Coffee Roasters, based in North Wales, provided an outstanding selection of single-origin beans: from a lively natural anaerobic Colombian to a heat-shocked bean, giving participants the chance to explore various flavour profiles and preparation techniques. Minor Figures, pioneers of oat milk, stocked the fridges so that the practice of latte art would be able to reflect actual bar conditions. Their premium product allowed the baristas to feel, taste, and perfect the subtleties of texture and elasticity. Meanwhile, Islands Chocolate added a sweet touch, offering hot chocolate tastings and inviting the baristas to broaden their understanding of coffee culture.

Collaborative learning

What made the event truly special was the spirit of genuine exchange and the presence of experts eager to share their knowledge, such as Nathan from Heartlands, who guided participants through the nuances of the products while sharing his professional journey in roasting and specialty coffee. It’s not every day that a barista gets the chance to chat with the CEO of a major roastery in such a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere! There was also Josh from Minor Figures, who gave hands-on demonstrations and tips on oat

milk consistency and pouring, while Gus and Jonas from Islands Chocolate were as eager to learn as they were to teach.

Stew and Zoë from Sanremo UK were there to answer technical questions about the machines, but most importantly, to listen. What challenges do customers present to baristas? What frustrations arise behind the counter? This dialogue created a virtuous cycle of feedback with the potential to shape products, training, and industry priorities.

The Community in Action

Moments of genuine collaboration followed one after another.

Gathered around a Sanremo D8 Pro, applause erupted when a barista successfully drew a “Bunny” in latte art under the watchful eye of a teacher he had only met an hour earlier.

A shared whiteboard became a canvas of learning: a living document of shared knowledge filled with pour-over diagrams, latte art sketches, and notes on techniques that evolved in real time.

The Sanremo UK team encouraged contributions with posters, pens, and post-it notes, giving baristas a way to share their ideas and feedback directly. This initiative encouraged baristas to take ownership of the event, leaving suggestions and proposals for future gatherings. The feedback will be used to make future Barista Hubs more closely aligned with what baristas truly want and need, ensuring they are more engaging and valuable for everyone involved.

" The evening left a lasting impression and gave me a real boost of motivation, which I carried with me into my internship and my days at Well Grounded."

More than a training session

Overall, the event was a resounding success. It was a space where coffee was poured without judgement, countless lattes were created in the name of progress, and V60s were brewed just for the fun of it. By the end of the evening, it was clear that Barista Hub had become more than just a workshop: it was a celebration of the art of the barista.

The message is clear: London’s coffee community yearns for a space like this, and Barista Hub has proven that when the industry invests directly in baristas, the result is not just improved skills, but a stronger, more connected, and more conscientious community

Be Real. Do Better. Waste Less –Surface Coffee Roasters leads the way

Surface Coffee Roasters has a clear mission: Be real. Do better. Waste less. And they demonstrate it every day, with courage and determination, as they work to become the first roaster in the world to achieve zero waste from single-use packaging by the end of 2026

Based on the Devon coast since 2024, but present in cafés all across the UK, Surface Coffee Roasters has combined ethical sourcing, meticulous roasting, and mindful business practices to create something truly exceptional. It’s not just about coffee, but about culture, creativity, and connection.

The company's founder, Brandon Hargrave, brings a musician’s perspective to the roasting process. With a background in sound and composition, Brandon approaches roasting as though he were crafting a great record: balancing rhythm, harmony, and emotion. This musical mindset influences everything from the roasting profiles to the partnerships, which are carefully designed, collaborative, and always soulful.

Alongside Brandon, co-founder Daisy Peacock is not only a professional coffee expert, but also a yoga teacher. Her grounding in mindfulness and body awareness shapes the way they communicate, train, and support partners with balance, presence, and purpose Daisy also spearheads the sustainability mission, implementing circular systems, customer education, and community engagement initiatives.

Surface Coffee has a bold and adventurous spirit. This is how it discovered Sanremo Coffee Machines and became its distributor, recognising the brand’s drive for innovation, excellence in design, and commitment to relationships… and as Daisy and Brandon put it, "whether it’s a Café Racer in a bustling bar or a YOU machine in a more intimate venue, Sanremo lets you deliver quality and consistency in every cup."

But Surface Coffee’s commitment extends far beyond great coffee. As ocean lovers and surfers, the co-founders are proud members of 1% for the Planet and corporate partners of the Marine Conservation Society, donating a portion of their profits to protect the UK’s marine ecosystems. They also organise and fund collective beach clean-ups, turning profit into action, and values into measurable impacts.

Surface Coffee Roasters doesn't want to be the loudest voice in the industry, but rather one of the most responsible, creative, and authentic

" Whether it’s a Café Racer in a crowded bar or a YOU machine in a more intimate venue, Sanremo delivers quality and consistency in every cup."
––– Brandon and Daisy (Founders)

Surface Coffee is a partner of the Marine Conservation Society, the UK’s leading charity for marine conservation. Over 170 beach clean-up initiatives are in the works across the country.

Brandon and Daisy are building something that's meant to last, with a passion for people, respect for the planet, and a profound love for the art of coffee. We will certainly be hearing more from them, and we join them in their call to: Be real. Do better. Waste less!

Specialty coffee arrives at the Auckland university campus

NEEDO, well-loved for its generous pasta and pizza portions at studentfriendly prices, has long been a favourite among students at the University of Auckland

While coffee has been on the menu at some of their other locations, this is the first time it’s being introduced at their university site — and it’s arrived in style. Having recently moved into a larger space on campus, NEEDO saw the opportunity to expand their offering, and coffee was the natural next step.

To help them make the leap, we chose the Sanremo D8 — a machine known for delivering consistent quality while remaining easy for teams to operate. Fully customised in NEEDO signature colour scheme, the D8 doesn’t just perform well — it looks right at home, perfectly reflecting the brand’s bold identity.

For us at Sanremo New Zealand, it’s incredibly rewarding to see one of our machines play a part in a customer’s growth. The D8 has empowered NEEDO to confidently launch a new service stream, and we’re proud to support them on this journey.

Turns out, coffee and pasta make the perfect pair after all.

Since its installation, the D8 has been a game-changer

" NEED O is now the go-to coffee spot on campus. Students swing by to fuel up on their favourite brews, and coffee has quickly become a staple of the daily NEEDO experience."

Tradition meets design at Forefathers in Hyderabad

Inaugurated in January of this year, the Forefathers Restaurant in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, combines South Indian tradition with contemporary design

The Sanremo India distributor fulfilled the client's request: to create a warm and visually striking space that reflects the idea of "fusion" at the heart of the restaurant.

The centrepiece of the restaurant is the "Clay Court" chandelier, an installation made up of 90 elements including Telangana Dhurries rugs, Telia Rumal fabrics, leather puppets, coloured satin-finished glass, Corten steel and Ikat fabrics. The Corten steel blocks add depth, while the satin-finished glass and neutral fabrics balance the space, creating an evocative and beautifully lit atmosphere.

Designed by Baaya Design, this spectacular piece is not only decorative, but also a storytelling medium that narrates the cultural heritage of Telangana, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow — from bright and lively to warm and intimate helping to define the restaurant's distinctive identity.

On the preparation desk, surrounded by the green plants that adorn the restaurant, a Sanremo F18 coffee machine complements the fusion experience with style and precision.

Sanremo stands for top–quality coffee in India too

Cafe Kappu

Starting in the summer of 2025, the Indian coffee scene has been enriched with three new coffee shops, all ofwhich have chosen Sanremo machines to set themselves apart on the specialty coffee scene. Thanks to the Indian distributor, these openings mark a significant step in spreading the culture of high quality coffee across the subcontinent.

In Bengaluru, Cafe Kappu stands out for its blend of exceptional coffee and distinctive design. The star of the counter is a Sanremo D8 Pro, featuring a custom colour scheme, dedicated lighting and leather panels, creating an ambience that seamlessly combines elegance, aroma and technology.

Cafe Lento

In Goa, on the other hand, Cafe Lento welcomes guests beneath a ceiling of lush climbing plants. Designed by Ayaz Basrai, the café is an oasis of calm and contemplation. A striking Sanremo D8 Pro stands proudly amongst the greenery, perfectly suited for a venue described by Architectural Digest as "the greenest spot in Goa".

Here, the Sanremo Opera 2.0 delivers outstanding performance, becoming the beating heart of a place where every cup is a moment to be cherished.

Cafe Neon Market –an atmosphere and a community

Inaugurated in September in Bengaluru, Neon Market is more than a café. It's more than a boutique. It's a revolution. A neon paradise where culinary art fuses with the most daring style. The chef crafts bold, surprising flavours while DJs spin beats that make the whole place come alive.

On the ground floor? This is where you indulge in gravity-defying pancakes and sip coffee that could wake the dead — which is why a Sanremo coffee machine is essential: a Black&White Café Racer Naked sits proudly on the preparation desk. On the mezzanine, step into a streetwear paradise: a curated selection of cutting-edge garments, from daring local designers to the most sought-after international brands. Here you can finally find those limitededition Nikes you've been dreaming of!

At Cafe Neon Market, you get a taste of the future. The neon lights do more than illuminate the night — they're a beacon for the bold, the creative and the unapologetically unconventional. Not just food, not just fashion… but a whole world to be discovered.

The Friendly Benji's Coffee

Inaugurated in June, Benji's Coffee in Bengaluru is a warm, pet-friendly café that combines minimalism with authentic flavour, serving specialty coffees enhanced by creative aromas — all prepared with the highperformance Sanremo Café Racer coffee machine. An ideal spot to savour refined blends in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

The café becomes even more inviting on Sundays with its special events: artist-led workshops, conversations over coffee, networking sessions, slow living experiences, and pop-up activities. Community-focused moments, rich with creativity and connection, where people come together to create something truly special.

A Café Racer to launch a new coffee

SIGEP Asia

Sands Expo & Convention Centre Singapore

During SIGEP Asia, the region's leading trade fair for the F&B and HORECA sectors, Kaffa Kaldi, in partnership with Sanremo, proudly unveiled its new variety of Robert Timms coffee beans. Introducing a new coffee demands a stage worthy of its character, which is why a Café Racer Naked (Red/Black) was chosen — a machine that not only ensures flawless extraction, but also captivates with its bold design.

The event drew considerable interest. Numerous promising connections were made with clients in the bar and hotel sector. All visitors admired both the rich, refined taste of the new coffee and the exceptional performance and design of the Café Racer machine. It was an event that marked the start of a partnership with Sanremo, with a promise of many more stories to come.

The Alternative Championships –Franchise Edition

JM Barista Skills unleashes the potential of baristas

It has become a tradition. Boasting a rich history in coffee roasting, the Viennese company Julius Meinl has been organising the JM Barista Skills championship for professional baristas for several years. It's more than a competition; it's a large-scale festival that brings together baristas from across Russia, giving them the opportunity to showcase their skills, creativity, and originality in coffee preparation.

This year, the championship will be held across six qualifying rounds in six cities: Yaroslavl on 22 May, Kazan on 3 July, Irkutsk on 24 July, Krasnodar on 14 August, Moscow on 4 September, and Ekaterinburg on 18 September. The winners will meet in the final in Moscow on 24 October 2025

The qualifying rounds have been thrilling, each offering unforgettable excitement and impressive performances. The success of JM Barista Skills is not only due to the talent of the participants; the equipment also plays a key role. This year, Julius Meinl chose the versatile Sanremo D8 PRO, highlighting the uniqueness of its hybrid hydraulic system with a stainless steel boiler (AISI 316L), ensuring excellent thermal stability.

Participants appreciated the machine’s reliability and ease of use, essential in situations requiring fast-paced work. By precisely controlling temperature, pressure, and extraction time, baristas were able to unlock the full potential of the coffee, producing beverages with perfect balance and flavour.

The final is yet to come, and bold experiments await!

Stories to be discovered over a cup of coffee

Hibakujumoku Trees

that survived the atomic bomb

The story of the Hibakujumoku began on 6 August 1945 in Hiroshima, when the atomic bomb generated a thermal intensity of around 5,500 degrees Celsius within a radius of 3 km. It was as if the Sun had touched the Earth for a few brief seconds. Yet just a few months later, some trees began to sprout again from their charred trunks and deep roots, thanks to their extraordinary cellular plasticity.

Today, over 160 trees in Hiroshima and Nagasaki are officially recognised as Hibakujumoku. Declared natural monuments, they are marked with small yellow signs identifying them as “trees exposed to nuclear radiation,” showing the species and the distance from the hypocentre of the explosion.

They belong to more than 30 species, including Ginkgo biloba – the most renowned – Aphananthe aspera, Cinnamomum camphora (several of which still stand near Hiroshima’s hypocentre), Diospyros kaki (some still bear fruit), Holly–Ilex rotunda, Platanus orientalis, Paeonia suffruticosa, and Salix babylonica, which survived less than 400 metres from the hypocentre.

Living symbols of nature’s ability to regenerate even under the harshest conditions, Hibakujumoku are a unique case of ecological resilience to nuclear devastation, and are the focus of international projects that distribute their seeds and seedlings across the globe.

A new partner for the Latin American market

Exigí Buen Café, Argentina’s most important coffee industry event, gathers leading roasters and major international brands of espresso machines and coffee grinders.

For this edition, Sanremo Coffee Machines and Macchiato announced their partnership for the Latin American market, aiming to expand Sanremo’s distribution and presence throughout the region.

This marks the creation of a new reference point for the commercial representation and promotion of Sanremo machines in Argentina: a significant step towards strengthening relationships with industry professionals and providing them with outstanding technical solutions for coffee extraction.

Sanremo and Malefatte –the value of solidarity merchandising

The new Sanremo merchandising collection bears the Malefatte brand name, renewing its solidarity partnership with one of the most visionary and tenacious social cooperatives in the Venetian scene: Rio Terà dei Pensieri. We asked Vania Carlot, president, and Liri Longo, project manager, to share the story and philosophy behind a 100% made in prison craft production enterprise.

Tell us about the Malefatte brand.

––– Vania Carlot

The Malefatte brand fully reflects the mission of the social cooperative, which since 1994 has focused on training and work within Venetian prisons.

The first project, launched at the Santa Maria Maggiore Men's Prison, was a leather goods workshop. We didn’t have a formal business plan, but we soon realised there was interest in the products, that a market existed, and that it was slowly growing. This led to the idea of structuring the business and enhancing the design with the help of Fabrizio Olivetti, a renowned Venetian graphic designer (he designed the logo of the City of Venice). This process also prompted the decision to use recycled materials, shifting from traditional leather goods to recycled PVC

Today, Malefatte produces unique bags, backpacks, and accessories from discarded advertising banners — from exhibitions, events, and city celebrations — which are selected, cut, and sewn by prisoners. These are handcrafted, eco-sustainable, fair-trade products that tell a genuine story of redemption.

Vania Carlot President of the Cooperative Rio Terà dei Pensieri

Malefatte is an unusual name for a craft production enterprise. How did it come about?

––– Liri Longo

Yes, that’s true. We wanted a more "commercial" name than that of the cooperative to identify these special products. The idea came from a competition organised in the men’s prison screen printing workshop: inmates proposed several options, and the one with the most votes was "Malefatte". A term that evokes mistakes and faults, but in this case becomes a symbol of rebirth and creativity.

The cooperative also operates at the women’s prison in Venice. What activities does it carry out?

––– Vania Carlot

In addition to the recycled PVC and screen printing workshops at the men’s prison, the cooperative also runs horticulture and cosmetics activities at the Giudecca women’s prison. Here, with the support of experts, organic body and hair care products are created in the cosmetics workshop: face and body creams, shampoos, conditioners, solid and liquid soaps, even including a 100% vegan line.

All products are made from essences grown in the Orto delle Meraviglie (Garden of Wonders), which are harvested, dried, and transformed into glycerine extracts within the prison. The supply chain prioritises eco-sustainability, respecting the natural rhythms of the seasons and only using what is produced in the garden, with no chemical additives. This process carries not only productive value, but also educational significance: it teaches that no external elements are needed to make a difference, and that like plants, we, too, can endure, adapt, and transform ourselves to remain part of the world.

#workinprison

The Giudecca Women’s Prison houses women serving long sentences and is also home to the Istituto a Custodia Attenuata Madri (ICAM), dedicated to inmates with children. The Santa Maria Maggiore Prison, on the other hand, houses men awaiting trial or serving short sentences, although many remain there for three years or more.

Investing time in awareness and training programmes in prison promotes reintegration into the work force and society, reduces the risk of recidivism, and restores dignity to those seeking a fresh start.

Training, craft production and job placement. How do you fund your activities?

–––

At the beginning, we relied primarily on volunteers and sales at markets and fairs, which were essential for building recognition and establishing national connections. The first point of sale was an old newsstand in Campo Santo Stefano; then in 2016, a meeting with American artist Mark Bradford — who was impressed by the project's social impact — led to the opening of a proper shop in the Frari area, which has been operating for seven years.

Bag Created by Mark Bradford with Berengo Studio in Murano, this edition consists of 30 glass sculptures depicting shopping bags with engraved marks on the surface, symbolising the temporary nature of imprisonment. A reference to both the PVC bags produced at the men’s prison workshops and the shopping bags common at international events such as the Venice Biennale.

At the same time, we participated in numerous public and private funding initiatives, which supported the launch of new training and work activities for inmates. Today, however, the focus has shifted back to direct and structured sales. We are concentrating particularly on customised products and expanding orders from companies such as Sanremo Coffee Machines, Fastweb, Teatro La Fenice, Palazzo Grassi, and the Aman Hotel in Venice.

Where can Malefatte products be purchased?

A few months ago, we opened a new store in Venice, in Salizada San Pantalon. The products are also available online, through the official Malefatte website or the Freedhome – Creativi Dentro network, which collects and distributes products from various cooperatives. Its main store is located in Turin.

Rio Terà

dei

Pensieri, the parent company of the Malefatte brand

Rio Terà dei Pensieri is a social cooperative founded in 1994 with the aim of promoting training and work activities within Venetian prisons. Its creation was inspired by a meeting between retired former director of the Venice airport, Raffaele Levorato — the first president and driving force behind the cooperative — and a trade unionist who was imprisoned following an event that deeply shook the city: the murder of the port superintendent.

In the visiting room of the Santa Maria Maggiore Prison, the two discussed the lack of available activities in prison, the wasted time, and the need to create new forms of support within the criminal justice system

That dialogue gave rise to the idea of putting into practice the principles enshrined in the Italian Constitution, which, under Article 27, establishes the rehabilitative function of punishment.

The first initiative took shape as a craft leather goods workshop. Over the years, the activities expanded, introducing increasingly structured training and work models, leading to actual job placement programmes with training and paid internships, designed to support ex-convicts after they had paid their debts to society.

Today, Rio Terà dei Pensieri operates within Venetian prisons on a daily basis. At the Santa Maria Maggiore Men’s Prison, it runs a screen printing workshop and leather goods and recycled PVC workshops. At the Giudecca Women’s Prison, it runs a cosmetics workshop and the Orto delle Meraviglie (Garden of Wonders), where natural essences used in beauty products are cultivated. Outside the prisons, the cooperative coordinates work reintegration programmes for prisoners serving alternative sentences, such as semi-liberty regimes or community service.

This work requires careful attention to the human aspects, with regard to both the prisoners and the team of operators, based on mutual trust, courage, and flexibility in facing the daily challenges of complex and constantly evolving contexts.

Creating training and job opportunities stems from the belief that, through craftsmanship and creativity, it is possible to embark on a pathway of change: a quiet and progressive journey in which people challenge themselves, discover unexpected qualities and talents, and regain self-confidence and dignity, ultimately reintegrating fully into society.

"It's not a particularly profitable venture, nor is it a model that is easy to replicate. What guides us is the ethical dimension of our work, which is strongly focused on social reintegration and human dignity."
