Go-Go-Glamping Getting close to Nature, but in luxury

G

lastonbury and Glamping have several things in common, not just their first three letters. After the initial flush of adulthood, many people want creature comforts when braving the fresh air, to get the best of both worlds, to have their cake and eat it….. the metaphors could go on, but will glamping? It certainly looks set to stay, weather permitting.

Glamping doesn’t feature in my 1998 Oxford English Dictionary, where it would come between glamour puss and glam rock, but now it is part of the established vocabulary.

Those who each year face the music and endure mud near the famous Glastonbury Tor have an enviable resilience, but most lack access to a tree house, yurt, geodesic dome, double decker bus, ex-Army lorry, bell tents, log cabins or shepherds’ huts, all of which can be found at one or more ‘glampsites’, though often at a cost in some cases approaching that of a good hotel!

In East Sussex glamping is available near Robertsbridge (Woodside Yurt and Tipi) and at Glottenham Castle and Farm where the accommodation suggests a Huguenot influence: de Glottingyngham, de Etchyngham, Bodichon Yurt and – for a hint of Italian – Rossetti.

There are nine glampsites within fifteen miles of Heathfield alone and one is near Waldron – Dernwood Farm (http:// dernwoodfarm.co.uk/).

Its home-produced meats put it into the top five camp site farm shops in England according to the Rough Guide (which calls it “carnivore heaven”) and the Cool Camping Guide voted it one of the top 10 camp sites in England.

There are nine glampsites within fifteen miles of Heathfield alone The Field of the Cloth of Gold (Camp du Drap d’Or) was in Balinghem, between Ardres in France and Guînes, in the onetime English Pale of Calais.

Here King Henry VIII met King Francis I in 1520, to cement their friendship following the AngloFrench treaty of 1514.

The site shimmered with tents and costumes woven from golden cloth and the two kings also tried to outdo each other with the lavishness of the food, music, and games.

Nowadays, neighbouring France is an obvious destination for glamping, which has gone global; with European destinations such as Hungary and Portugal and further afield, Mexico in Central America which all have their own versions, if you don’t fancy Powys, Devon or the Dordogne.

All would agree that if you want cosy camping - go glamping! Weather permitting...

Food and wine The Wealden Way, Sussex Style

ussex has a rich foodie scene! With marvellous cheeses - from cows, sheep or goats and in Jevington, the banoffee pie was first created at the Hungry Monk, marked in the village with a blue plaque.

Though, sadly the famous restaurant no longer exists and nor does Waldron’s St George’s Vineyard. You can read about St George’s it in A Vine Romance

Happily, wine making lives on in this region, think; Biddenden, Bluebell, Bolney, Breaky Bottom, Carr-Taylor, Nutbourne, Ridgeview, Ticehurst, and Sedlescombe Organic.

The Wealden Food and Wine Festival returns - this year, it’s at Pevensey Castle on Saturday, July 16 and Sunday, July 17. Pevensey, you may recall, is where the Normans landed 950 years ago so living history will entertain the children with workshops relating to the Bayeux Tapestry.

There will also be cookery demonstrations and wine from the Bluebell Vineyard, live music, science workshops, street entertainment, craft stalls, vintage bicycles with period costume, and guided walks.

On Saturday, the Pirates of Pevensey will invade, and on Sunday there will be displays of falconry. What a weekend!

Last year’s Food and Wine Festival, at the Bentley Wildfowl and Motor Museum, was attended by nearly six thousand people.

I have worked in Horticulture all my adult life having served as an apprentice at Brighton Parks and Gardens. I was even helping to train gardeners for them at the Sussex Parks Training Centre.

The gardens here at the Temple are some 28 acres excluding the buildings, and are a traditional English country garden with wonderful walks through the parkland. These walks vary from a small stroll around the Temple itself where we have traditional flower beds with spring and summer bedding displays to the magnificent Rhododendron walks which are breath taking when in flower in May. We have woodland walks that have Bluebells, Wood Anemones in, not to mention the trees, Oaks, Atlantic Ceders, Lime Trees, and Yew Trees the list goes on. Spring flowers include Daffodils, Tulips, and Forget-me-nots to name a few and if you know where to look little surprises like the Snake Head Fritillaries.

Because the garden houses the Temple it is a garden for quiet meditation, a place for prayer, a place to come and think through life’s challenges, a place to find peace and comfort. For this reason pets are not welcome here and we invite our visitors to respect the quiet space of others, also enjoying the garden and the peace and tranquillity found here. Families are always welcome and it is to be noted that uniting families is one of the main reasons for a temple.

Toad in the hole – a Sussex delight!

(But maybe not what you might think…)

hat do you think of when you hear ‘Toad in the Hole’?

A helping of sausages in batter accompanied by vegetables and gravy? Those of a literary bent might imagine a goggledhero, the Jeremy Clarkson of the amphibian world, emerging from a crashed sports car outside Toad Hall.

Either way, in East Sussex you would be on the wrong track, for here Toad in the Hole is a game played in pubs, largely in and around Lewes, where brass coin-like discs, the toads are thrown at a lead topped table with a hole in the middle.

A variant of pitch penny, this Sussex game has itself given way to the vastly more popular darts. The rules may be unfamiliar so please read them carefully, as they’re a bit complicated and go as follows:

Scoring starts at 31 for each game and decreases by the points scored; one for each toad landing on the lead, and two for each one going through the hole until reaching zero, which wins the game (to that extent resembling darts).

Matches consist of the best of three games, or five in the final. A coin is tossed to determine who begins and at the start of each game the first player in each team uses two toads, the next player uses three toads, and the next player (and those after that), use four toads.

Where a score of less than four is needed to finish a game, then only that number of toads may be used. Got it? Or would you prefer darts?

Variants of this game are played worldwide. In France it’s the game of the frog - jeu de la grenouille, which not only sounds better – if more difficult to pronounce - than crapaud, but frog has more meanings (at least three, quite distinct).

Toad-in-the-hole is juego de la rana in Spain, and in the Basque Country, it is igel jokoa.

It is widely played in South America where in different countries it is called variants of rana and saop .

In Miami, in the United States, players are warned that ’it is prohibited to approach, distract, or cross in front of the player while he/she is tossing.’

An international competition is now held in Lewes every year, run by Lewes Lions Club. East Sussex has the only known league in this country, with three divisions involving more than twenty teams in the county’s pubs.

For the last two years, the league has been won by the Laughing Fish, Isfield but make no mistake – it’s getting a lot more serious!

Pubs outside the county are also trying to compete with Sussex’s finest, but as with stoolball, Sussex is proud to lay claim to primacy and long history.

Paws in the Park

Dog owners come in all shapes and sizes, as do their canine companions, but the owner’s desire to include their dogs as a very treasured member of the family seems to be universal.

T

he Paws in the Park show is not only a great family day out but also showcases activities that you and your dog can enjoy. More than that, it highlights all the areas where a canine can enhance the daily life of people everywhere.

Fun things to do include, Dash and Splash, (the clue is in the title), which is open to all dogs who enjoy having fun jumping into water.

A champion dog jumper/ball chaser who suddenly refuses to jump for any enticement can be very entertaining and of course involves a stooge who is the trainer, a very wet man called Jim. Better still it is competitive for visitors. Everyone thinks their dog is the best, so it gives them a chance to prove it.

If your dog loves to run with you, then Cani-Cross might be for you - it involves cross country running with your dog attached to you, not by a handheld lead, but at your waist so that you have both arms free to enhance your running style.

It looked very energetic but clearly with the right dog and the right owner, great fun.

Maybe you have watched Crufts and wondered about the Agility Clubs? If so, at the show you can watch clubs competing.

Agility training again is open to all breeds but certain breeds excel at that.

Fly Ball seems to put the dogs into a frenzy of excitement, again open to all types of dog breed but some breeds are more adapted to the speed than others.

There is a show ring that enables entertaining displays everything from Duck Herding to Dancing with Dogs.

The latter demonstration being given by Richard Curtis made teaching your dog to dance almost too easy, and is also excellent training to increase the emotional bond between dog and owner.

I tried one of his tips and to my surprise, the Lab picked it up instantly.

There were more types of dog food; not to mention the many herbal supplements.

Beauty for some dogs is essential as their fur just keeps growing, but apparently doggy dressing is on the increase.

I showed my Labrador the tutu, strangely not interested, but was very keen on the fully fitted dog fleece that dried in an instant after a muddy walk.

Also represented are the many charities that support dogs and the relationship between dog and human.

Search and Rescue Dogs and Sussex Caring Pets, a charity providing therapy dogs to hospitals, nursing homes and reading assistance in schools were on hand.

Furever Friends: How Your Pet Improves Your Child’s Development

e’ve all heard the saying; “a dog is man’s best friend”, but in fact it seems that they, along with other pets such as cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters, form meaningful and firm friendships with our children, that can be completely life-enhancing.

As we ‘Aah’ (and reach for the camera!) while they play or take naps together, their cute bond has a deeper, positive effect on their emotional, social and physical wellbeing.

Emotional Benefits As a 14-year-old, Michael Jackson sang about his pet rat, Ben; “With a friend to call my own, I’ll never be alone, and you, my friend, will see, you’ve got a friend in me.” Family pets provide our children with a genuinely meaningful friendship that stands the test of time. Recently, a study from the University of Warwick found that 85% of children thought of their pet as a friend.

It also found that 40% of those asked would seek out their pet if they felt upset.

This could be because they can turn to their furry friend, without fear of being judged or their problems being repeated, the Pet Health Council say.

“Children often find them easier to relate to (the world of grown-ups is often quite confusing!) They know that animals will not judge them, will not ‘break friends’ with them, and will not tell tales,” they explain.

Social Development Don’t be worried if you think your child is shunning other forms of friendships in favour of talking to your pet. The chances are that your pet has helped them to connect with others! Children are more likely to approach and get involved with another, if they are playing with an animal as it bridges the socially awkward gap and shifts the focus from them.

The American Center for Research explored the link between companion animals and childhood anxiety (which can significantly hinder social experiences) and found that it can be eased. The study saw lower blood pressure measures, lower heart rates and reduced behavioural distress. With anxiety now affecting 290,000 children and young people in the UK (according to mental health charity Young Minds), a pet could play a powerful part in combatting the impact it has on your child.

Physical Improvements As well as the obvious exercise benefits of walking or playing with pets, there are plenty of other reasons that they improve physical health. From hand-eye coordination (which can happen when your child scoops food into feeding bowls, for example) to reducing the risk of allergies, your pet may be helping your child’s physical development more than you think.

The Medical College of Georgia in America found that having pets decreases a child’s risk of developing certain allergies such as hay fever and house dust mites by 75%.

The theorist behind the study believes this is because animals can transfer bacteria and in the process, builds a child’s immune system.

By Shelley Baker Exfoliating all-over skin scrub Buff away dry skin and dare to bare your bikini body with a selfmade scrub! An oatmeal, sugar and honey mixture is perfect for dry and sensitive skin, leaving skin feeling sumptuously smooth!

Mix 6 tablespoons of brown sugar with 4 tablespoons of ground oatmeal and slowly add 2 tablespoons of clear honey with 6 tablespoons of sweet almond oil (olive oil is a great alternative) for a sweet-smelling scrub that costs pennies!

Refreshing facemask Rejuvenate, revive and revitalise your glow with the ingredient of the moment; the avocado!

Instead of spreading it on your toast or making guacamole, mash half of this superfood with a tablespoon of olive oil and apply it to your face for twenty minutes. You’ll have moisturised skin in no time!

Soothing after-sun Even those of us that slather ourselves in suntan cream can end up feeling flushed and red, after a day spent in the sun. For the ultimate cooling and soothing after-sun lotion, raid your kitchen cupboards for 4 teaspoons of aloe vera, 4 teaspoons of olive oil, 1 teaspoon of coconut oil, 2 teaspoons of shea butter and 5 drops of lavender essential oil. Simply mix them together for a healing lotion that will reduce redness and that painful sunburn sting!

Cracked heels cream Dry, cracked heels that have been hidden all year? It’s time for them to strut in summer sandals! Give your heels the TLC treatment they deserve with one wonder ingredient: the humble lemon! Rub half a lemon over your feet, (squeezing it slightly) for five minutes.

Then using a brush or face cloth, gently scrub your heels and soles and wash with water. If you have more time for pampering, soak your feet in a bowl of warm water with the juice of a whole lemon, and repeat a few times a week. Not only will this leave your tootsies looking healthy, but also smelling fresh too!

Dry hair repair Sunshine and swimming may be fantastic for our mental and physical health, but sadly not for our tresses! Stripping oils and frazzling our locks, calming moisture needs to put back into hair – and this can easily be done with just three household ingredients! All you need is to combine an egg yolk, 2 tablespoons of coconut oil and a tablespoon of honey and apply to damp hair, making sure to soak damaged ends. After 30 minutes, wash your homemade mask off to reveal shiny and luxurious locks!

Widely recognised as the biggest and most popular Pride event in the UK, the Brighton Pride Festival is a spectacular, fun event set in the city’s beautiful Preston Park fueled by pride, love and campaigning.

he first contemporary Brighton Pride took place in 1992 and since 1996 the Pride Festival has been based at Preston Park this year, the event promises to be bigger and better than ever before!

On Saturday, August 6 the streets of Brighton and Hove will come alive as the city unites to celebrate Brighton Pride’s Carnival of Diversity with community groups, charities and performers coming together.

A day filled with world-class entertainment, community and celebrations – the word of the day is flamboyance! This year’s list of performers includes Carly Rae Jepson, Fleur East and Sister Sledge.

In the past three years alone, Pride has raised more than £210,000 for community good causes and this year there are hopes that previous records will be smashed with sights on the global Pride movement.

The theme for 2016 is Uniting Nations, a once in a lifetime opportunity to celebrate the global Pride movement and the worldwide LGBT community – Brighton will be embracing foreign flavours.

There will be sights and sounds from the salsa-laden São Paulo’s Brazil Pride, the stylish Berlin Pride of Germany and the exuberant Sydney Mardi Gras from Australia – three countries collide in one day!

weekend of family fun is set to whip-up a frenzy in Horam with the village’s annual Fun Day taking place on Sunday, July 10 between 1.30pm and 5.00pm.

There will be music from Wealden Brass Band, a children’s pet show, a collect of classic cars a nd tractors and a display from local dance school, Diamond Dance.

The popular family event, now in its 14th year will be officially opened by East Sussex-born, Harlequins and England international rugby player, Joe Marler.

Living with dementia

he term ‘dementia’ is used to describe the symptoms that occur when the brain is affected by specific diseases and conditions.

There are many different types of dementia, both inherited and non-inherited. The most common forms of dementia include Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, frontal lobe dementia and Lewy bodies.

People living with dementia can experience many different symptoms, including loss of memory, confusion, problems with speech and understanding.

These symptoms can differ from person to person depending on the type of dementia they have.

It is important to create a safe and supportive environment where people with dementia can live comfortably, maintain their independence and not feel restricted. As one of the symptoms of dementia can be confusion, it is a good idea to make everything easily recognisable. Colour contrasts are often a quick and effective way of helping areas stand out.

Surrounding a person with photos or images to trigger some of their favourite memories may also help them feel more comfortable. Reminiscence can be a great tool for therapy to help someone feel relaxed, safe and connected with the people around them.

Mediterranean Magic

I

f you can’t get away this year, how about creating your own Mediterranean hotspot in your garden? Even if you do manage to escape to the sun for a week or two this year, you’ll still have the rest of the summer at home and a little slice of Italy, France or Greece outside your back door will bring happy memories flooding back.

The first thing to do is to choose the sunniest spot available – it’ll not only make sitting out there more enjoyable, but will also mean that you can install some serious sun-loving plants too.

Painting the nearby house, shed or garage wall with white masonry paint will help to create the right atmosphere.

At the same time it will help to reflect our sunlight – often a bit washed out compared to more southern climes - so providing a stronger light for the type of plants that appreciate it.

Mediterranean gardens often make full use of the walls and any other vertical surfaces, so put up hanging baskets, pots and wall baskets and cram them full of plants.

Plants in pots are a must and if possible choose stone or terracotta containers.

If you want to make brand new pots look more weathered

try painting them with a solution of plain yoghurt as this will help to encourage rapid colonisation by mosses, algae and lichens.

Any new hard landscaping such as wall, paths or patios and terraced surfaces will look best in natural stone and there are now also terracotta tiles available for use in the garden.

Terracotta tiles can also have a storage-heater effect too – after a long, hot day they will have absorbed heat and this will then be released gradually in the evening.

Add interest to a vertical surface by planting a vine. They have attractive leaves and there are plenty to choose from that will fruit well in our climate.

You may not be able to create your own vintage but the vines will look particularly authentic when draped with a few bunches of grapes.

Glazed tiles, wall-hangings and the odd ornament or two can also add to the Mediterranean look, but make sure you choose items that won’t be instantly bleached by the sun.

Try growing your own oranges or lemons. With our generally milder winters some gardeners are even managing to keep these plants outside all year round with only the

minimum of protection.

Growing your citrus tree in a good-sized terracotta pot means that you can move it into a more protected spot if necessary.

With their wonderful silvery grey leaves and their often rather untidy or gnarled shape, olives too are a plant well worth considering.

Olives are best grown in a large container unless you have a warm garden and a very well-drained soil as they hate winter wet.

Some plants just spell out Mediterranean Magic – try geraniums and pelargoniums, aeoniums and sempervivums, rosemary, thyme, oregano and pretty well anything with silvery foliage.

Go for the brightest coloured flowers and your new holiday destination will also benefit from a subtle Mediterranean aroma too.

Method 1. In a jug, stir the gin and ginger together, then cover and chill for up to 24 hours until ready to serve.

Method 1. Place the strawberries and sugar in small pan and heat very gently for 10 minutes until the strawberries are very soft and pulpy.

Press through a fine sieve and leave to cool until ready to serve.

2. Strain the gin into 2 tall glasses and add a scoop of ice cubes to each. Top up with the sparkling rhubarb and serve.
