Sackville Sisters Set Their Sights Sky High! In recent years, trampolining has become something of a national past-time with families having a trampoline in their garden. For most it is a hobby and a form of exercise, but for a few, it goes much further, and since 2000 it has been recognised as an Olympic sport.

T

rampolining was invented by George Nissen in the early 1930’s when he had observed trapeze artists performing tricks as they bounced off the safety net. He made what is now recognised as the first modern small scale trampoline in his garage before forming a company to build trampolines for sale to the public. Using a variant of the Spanish for the diving board - trampolin, he entertained audiences and allowed them to participate in his demonstrations as part of his marketing strategy. From this, a new sport was born - trampolining was fast introduced in the USA, and into mainstream sports programmes in schools and leisure centres. However, after a series of injuries and resulting lawsuits, mostly caused by inadequate training, the sport is now largely conducted in specialist centres with certified trainers. As a result, this has led to a reduction in competitive athletes in the USA but the sport was keenly adopted by European countries and the Soviet Union, and since then

6

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

By Rachel Whitlam has become a popular sport in many more countries. Two East Grinstead sisters from Sackville School are making great leaps in the world of trampolining. Jordi Crowther, 17, who competes at intermediate level nationally, trampolines at Synergy Club at The Kings Centre East Grinstead, where her coach is Lynda Munday. Younger sister, Heidi, is in the elite group for under-14’s, she competes nationally and has recently been to Prague in competition, winning a silver medal. She trampolines three to four times a week at Sky High Club based in Uckfield. Four girls at the club have been awarded prestigious Great Britain tracksuits, and Heidi qualified for the English Championships in Sheffield where she carried out a set routine of 10 bounces-a-round. The girls put in up to 12 hours training a week and began trampolining when they were

aged four and six years-old. Their father Paul explained that Sackville School has been very supportive of their sporting activities. The girls have recently competed in the National Schools Finals in Gateshead, this was their first time in the National Finals and saw Jordi finish in second place. From beginner to Olympian, every competition comprises of a set and a voluntary routine - set routine is performed by all competitors, while the voluntary is a higher difficulty and adds to the score. At elite level and above, there is also a score given for the time spent in the air rewarding brave and highbouncing performers. Once competitors reach the elite level, an additional World Age Games (WAG) routine is sometimes added. The WAG routine places the performer according to their age and ability across the world.

The Lingfield Runners Doing Their Bit For Charity Runners from the Lingfield Running Club will be doing their bit for charity on Sunday, September 3, as the popular annual Dry Hill 10 and Greathed Gallop 5 running events make a return to the village. By Jacob White

T

he Dry Hill 10 is a 10 mile multi-terrain race organised each year by Lingfield Running Club it has been a popular feature of the running calendar for many years and it attracts up to 200 mixed ability runners each year. In 2012, the Greathed Gallop 5, a 5 mile multi-terrain race was introduced and is now growing hugely in popularity, again attracting competitors from fun-runner to seasoned runner. The running events traditionally take place on the first Sunday in September – 2017 is no different with runners tackling the courses on Sunday, September 3. The races both start at 10.00am from the Young Epilepsy Centre in St Piers Lane, Lingfield, entry to both races is reasonably priced and you are able to enter races in advance at www.eventbrite.co.uk or on the day at the race venue headquarters. The race course takes runners through spectacular Surrey and Kent countryside, and is designed so that it is predominately off road, in fact, runners are more likely to meet a horse than a car during their run. However, both races are extremely well-signposted and marshalled so runners need not worry about getting lost, and

Going For Gold! There are prizes for race and category winners, plus all participants receive a medal. The prizes are sponsored by Greathed Manor Nursing Home, Dormansland, and each year, Lingfield Running Club supports local or regional charities from the profits of the Dry Hill 10 and Greathed Gallop 5 races.

there are will be refreshments for starters, finishers and spectators. Last year, Lingfield Running Club donated £500.00 in support of two local charities, Lingfield Scouts and Lingfield Marathon Minibus. The club is hoping to do the same this year for its designated charity, Jigsaw (South East) which offers grief support to children and young people who have experienced the death of a significant family member through illness, accident, suicide or murder. A community focus has been at the heart of the club since

its formation in 1983 and it has been an integral part of village life. The club operates from the Lingfield Victoria Sports and Social Club in the heart of the village and has an even ratio of 200 male and female members, aged from 20 years-old to more than 70 years-old. The club offers guidance and coaching to new and current members whether their aspiration is to run short distances socially or if they are planning or contemplating taking part in longer, gruelling distance events such as a 10K, marathon or even an ultra-marathon.

Winnie The Pooh

Ashdown Forest’s World Famous Bear Over the years, the honey-loving bear has proved to be a success for Disney, becoming one of its most popular franchises. The cute, loveable bear and friends have starred in a series of animated productions and have provided countless merchandising opportunities for the corporation.

A

fter buying Cotchford Farmhouse in Hartfield as his weekend retreat, Pooh creator, A.A Milne found inspiration in the surrounding Ashdown Forest, and using his son’s Teddy as a starting point, the idea of Pooh Bear was born. Pooh Bear first appeared on Christmas Eve 1925 in the London Evening News in a story called The Wrong Sort of Bees. Many locations on Ashdown Forest became the setting for the subsequent two books that closely followed, notably Five Hundred Acre Wood became Hundred Acre Wood. Pooh first appearance in colour was 1932, when he first acquired his now distinctive red jumper, and in 1947, Pooh and his friends were spotted in the corner of the living room at the author’s home by A.A Milne’s

Since that time, the toys have returned just twice, the first occasion to mark E.H Shepard’s 90th birthday and the second time in 1976 to celebrate Pooh’s 50th birthday. Originally, people in the quiet village of Hartfield found the sudden onslaught of Winnie tourists difficult but now you can pick up maps showing all the key locations on Ashdown Forest from the Forest Centre and you can find refreshments at Piglet’s Tearoom at Pooh Corner in Hartfield. They sell a selection of Pooh related paraphernalia including a fully-illustrated booklet guide and snacks such as Kanga’s crumpets and Hunnycombe. They also have an online club with an interactive Pooh Country Tour.

How To Play Poohsticks

Competitors drop small sticks from the bridge into the stream below and watch as the sticks race against each other, seeing whose twig will cross the predetermined finish line first. First, competitors select a stick and show it to your fellow competitors. Check which way the stream is flowing - competitors need to face the stream on the side where it runs in, under the bridge, upstream. Choose someone to go first this can be either the oldest or the youngest competitor. All the competitors stand side by side facing upstream. Competitors hold their stick at arms-length over the stream, taller competitors should lower their arms to bring all the sticks to the same height over the stream as the shortest competitor’s stick. The starter calls – ready, steady, go! and all the competitors drop their sticks. At this point in the game all the players must cross to the downstream side of the bridge. Look over the edge of the bridge for the sticks to emerge the competitor with the first Stick to float from under the bridge, is the winner.

RH NEWS

YOUR LOCAL NEWS UNCOVERED Dedicated RAF Nurses Fundraise For Local Hospital And Museum Military nurses from East Grinstead, Birmingham and Oxford donned their combats for a day of fundraising in July in aid of the Queen Victoria Hospital (QVH) Charity and the East Grinstead Museum. The nurses based themselves at the QVH, washed cars, sold homemade cakes and encouraged staff at the hospital to buy raffle tickets. The activities were arranged by RAF nurses who work at the hospital. Their efforts raised £700.00, to be split between the QVH Charity and the East Grinstead Museum. The charity helps the hospital provide better care, and a better quality of life, for patients and their families. The charity also helps fund research and educational work, enabling the hospital to continue to develop new and innovative treatments for patients. The museum, houses the Rebuilding Bodies and Souls exhibition which celebrates the story of Sir Archibald McIndoe, reconstructive surgery at the QVH and the Guinea Pig Club. Sgt Caroline Maynard-Burrows, an RAF nurse at the QVH, said: “As members of the RAF it’s important that we support the local community and what better charities to support than the QVH Charity and the museum. Being based at the QVH enables nurses like myself to update our training and develop highly relevant skills for RAF duty. It’s a pleasure to be able to support the hospital’s charity.” New Designs For Arts And Crafts Classic Designers Peter Thwaites and Rebecca Aird have been commissioned to create a collection of modern hand-printed fabrics and wallpapers for the National Trust’s Arts and Crafts house, Standen as part of the National Trust’s contemporary arts programme, Trust New Art. The project will see the designers create a collection of three wallpapers and fabrics that will be used as bespoke furnishings for parts of the house, reflecting the ethos of Standen’s architect Philip Webb and textile designer William Morris. The commissioned wallpaper will be hung in the newly refurbished Servants’ Wing, an area where there is little-to-no historical information regarding decoration and furniture. Textiles will be placed in various rooms throughout the house. Ben Dale, house manager at Standen House and Garden, said: “We’re looking forward to seeing how Peter and Rebecca bring the Servants wing spaces to life as they undergo refurbishment.” From Saturday, September 9, visitors will be able to trace the design journey of The Standen Collection, and view the final designs until April next year.

Plaque Honouring The Chequer Mead Friends Committee Unveiled In July, to thank them for their efforts in the past 20 years a plaque was unveiled at Chequer Mead Theatre in East Grinstead for the theatre’s friends committee. The plaque was unveiled by the general manager, Will Perkins, alongside the chairman of the trustees, Rex Whittaker. The scheme disbanded in September 2016 having spent many years supporting the growth of the theatre. Mr Perkins said: “We wanted to show a lasting recognition of thanks for all the hard work and valuable support that the ‘friends’ have given to Chequer Mead over the years.” Former Chequer Mead Friends chairperson, Ginnie Waddingham said: “We are delighted to have been presented with the plaque, and to be Laurence Proves He Is Picture Perfect honoured with thanks for all the hard A member of East Grinstead Camera Club has scooped top prize in a county-wide competition. Dunkirk (1958): Screening On The Beach This September, commemorate the enduring British wartime spirit of heroism amid severely chaotic conditions as STUDIOCANAL brings a very special late summer event to Sussex, a restored showing of Leslie Norman’s 1958 epic Dunkirk as allied forces evacuated France in the face of great adversity. By Jacob White

T

he special event on the beaches of Camber Sands on Wednesday, September 20 and Thursday, September 21 will be the premiere screening of a new restoration of the 1950s classic starring John Mills, who also appeared in Ice Cold In Alex, Goodbye Mr Chips, and Great Expectations, Richard Attenborough star of Brighton Rock, and The Great Escape, and a cast of genuine army officers. Directed by Leslie Norman, whose other work includes The Long, The Short And The Tall, Dunkirk is acclaimed as one of the most authentic representations of conflict, and was filmed on the exact beaches of Camber Sands that the screening will take place. The event is in association with The Luna Cinema and The Vintage Festival, and is part of the BFI’s Britain On Film Collection: Coast and Sea As well as the screening, event-goers will enjoy an evening of themed 1940s entertainment including food and drink of the era, 1940s dance

classes and set dressing, music and re-enactments. Gates open at 5.30pm, and the screening begins at 7.30pm. The screening will be preceded by archive films, including a montage of footage from the local coastal area at the time of the production. Dunkirk follows the events leading up to Operation Dynamo, where the British Army attempted to rescue fellow soldiers and allied troops from Nazi occupied France. Seen from the dual perspectives of a jaded journalist in search of propaganda and a weary soldier desperately trying to give his troop some hope, Dunkirk never shies away from the brutality of war and the bravery of its soldiers. The new restoration of Dunkirk is released on DVD, Blu-ray and EST, with new extras on Monday, September 25 2017 from STUDIOCANAL as part of their Vintage Classics Collection – showcasing iconic British films, fully restored and featuring new content. The Fallen Hard and Heavy Tidings Before the Dunkirk evacuation operation was completed, the prognosis had been very gloomy, Prime Minister Winston Churchill warned the House of Commons on May 28 to expect “hard and heavy tidings”. Subsequently, Churchill referred to the outcome as a miracle, and the British press presented the evacuation as a disaster turned to triumph so successfully Churchill had to remind the country, “we must be very careful not to assign to this deliverance the attributes of a victory. Wars are not won by evacuations.” .

The British Expeditionary Force (BEF) lost 68,000 soldiers (dead, wounded, missing, or captured) from May 10 until the surrender of France on June 22. Heavy equipment had to be abandoned, leaving behind in France 2,472 guns, 20,000 motorcycles, and almost 65,000 other vehicles. Six British and three French destroyers were sunk, along with nine other major vessels. In addition, 19 destroyers were damaged. More than 200 British and allied sea craft were sunk, with a similar number damaged. The Royal Navy’s most significant losses in the operation were six destroyers The RAF lost 145 aircraft, of which at least 42 were Spitfires, while the Luftwaffe lost 156 aircraft in operations in the nine days of Operation Dynamo.

The Royal Navy claimed the destruction of 35 Luftwaffe aircraft during the period from May 27 to June 1 and damage to 21 other aircraft. For every seven soldiers who escaped through Dunkirk, one was left behind as a prisoner of war. The majority of these prisoners were sent on forced marches into Germany. Prisoners reported brutal treatment by their guards, including beatings, starvation, and murder. Many of the prisoners were marched to the city of Trier, with the march taking as long as 20 days. The prisoners were then sent by rail to prisoner of war camps in Germany. The majority (those below the rank of corporal) worked in industry and agriculture for the remainder of the war. Today, the missing dead of the BEF are commemorated on the Dunkirk Memorial.

Sussex Tuition Centre

A

new tuition centre is opening in Haywards Heath in September for the start of the new academic year, and we have spoken to Sarah and Carol, co-founders.

What is the inspiration behind Sussex Tuition Centre (STC)? “We were inspired to launch the centre based on our experiences living overseas in Asia and the Middle East where there is more of a culture of supportive tuition based in a centre. We have seen first-hand how targeted tuition increased our children’s confidence and competence in a subject. Upon moving to Sussex, we became aware of the difficulty finding reliable tutors – we therefore decided to use our combined experience to create our concept of a centre that caters for all tutoring needs. Sarah is a UK qualified teacher with more than 25 years’ experience in education in the UK and overseas, and Carol has lecturing experience and has a business background.” How can STC help students? “Our aim is to help students achieve their full potential in their studies. This might be preparing for exams, scholarships, or simply to give students greater confidence to succeed in a subject at school. We don’t advocate an overreliance on tutors but extra help can be very effective in some circumstances. Confidence breeds confidence; our tutors can give students the tools and confidence to tackle all subjects with more enthusiasm and to make progess with more ease in subjects they may previously have found challenging.” Why should parents choose STC? “We offer tuition classes in a safe and comfortable environment in central Haywards Heath and we cater for all your tutoring needs under one roof so you no longer need to hunt for tutors in each subject you require. The centre offers bespoke tuition based on an analysis of each student’s needs and

requirements. We also favour tuition in small groups of a maximum of four which is often preferred as many students are more at ease with their peers rather than on an individual basis with a tutor. We have a rigorous selection process for tutors including DBS checks, qualification checks and safeguarding training. To make sure that you get the best value out of the tutoring, we provide regular feedback on your child’s progress and use up-to-date resources matched to exam boards and subject specifications.”

What can STC offer that other tutors cannot? “What makes STC different is that it offers a one-stop shop for all your tutoring needs - a wide range of subjects and tutors, a selection process for tutors that ensures the safety of your child, and the competence of the tutor, as well as administrative support using a professional web based tutor scheduling for booking and easy payment through our website. All this in a convenient location to drop children off for tutoring while you can run errands in Haywards Heath.” When is best to consider tutoring for your child? “There a many occasions when tuition could be appropriate for your child; to provide on-going support; to increase confidence in a subject; to prepare for exams by helping with exam technique and learning strategies,; or to prepare for academic entrance exams and scholarships.” Speaking with co-founders Sarah Lawrance and Carol Toye Woodroofe

CHILDREN

Private Schools In Focus

Choosing a school for your child is likely to be the most important decision you will make as a parent. Choose the right school and you can put your child on the path towards enjoying learning and in the future, a successful career – but, where do you start? By Jacob White Independent schools, private schools and public schools are essentially the same – whatever you call them, they have no funding from government and rely on tuition fees, gifts, endowments and charity-backing. There are many good private schools locally and the private education sector is proving to be an increasingly popular choice for parents, gone are the days when private schools were just for an elite few. Why choose a private education for your child? Higher standards of education, more chances in life, strong discipline, smaller classes and, better results are some of the reasons. Whatever the reason, the most important thing is to choose the right school for Of the reasons parents choose a private education, excellent sporting facilities, the opportunity to study classical subjects like Ancient Greek and Latin and networking opportunities are some given.

your child - what is a good school for one child may not be right for yours. Choosing is a process of elimination, it is vital to view several. If the first school you visit feels right make sure you see others to confirm this, create a list of what you would like when you start looking at all the schools locally.

What is important to you and your child? This includes location, before and after school provision, sport facilities, help with learning difficulties, support for gifted and talented children, after-school clubs available or its religious outlook. Continued on the next page

I have three girls at Burgess Hill Girls, all having moved from a good state school. CHILDREN “We encourage children to be aspirational, tenacious, courageous, curious and independent both within and beyond the classroom. We want our pupils to love learning and acquire the resilience, confidence and creativity which will allow them to seize the opportunities their futures bring.” Mr Mark Tottman, Headmaster at Dunottar School

Private schools do not have to follow the National Curriculum, however, like state schools, they are inspected to ensure they are up to standard. Reports are published online by the organisation who inspects them including - Ofsted, the Independent Schools Inspectorate, the Bridge Schools Inspectorate or the School Inspection Service.

Contact schools and arrange a personal visit or go to an open day, take your child with you – they will see things from a child’s perspective. Talk to the children at the school – are they happy and motivated? Do not forget to talk to parents – they can give you an honest opinion of what day to day life is like in the school but most of all, go with your

gut instinct – did your child feel at home there?

Do you consider boarding? If you are considering boarding there are additional things to consider, do you choose full or flexi-boarding? How much contact do you get with your child and how many boarders the same age and gender stay?

Did you leave feeling positive? You need to also consider finances, what will you be expected to pay? Consider, also, routine and family life, do they offer Saturday school and do school holidays fit in with your life?

If you decide to apply and can pay the fees, what next? Most senior schools use the Common Entrance exam, those at prep schools are coached to sit these exams but you can get a tutor to help your child.

Did you know? A private education is now available from just 12 months-old! Many prep schools offer baby rooms. Those educated wholly in the private sector can typically attend nursery until they are four, pre-prep from four to eight and prep school from eight to either 11 or 13 followed by senior school through to 18 and off to university.

PET CARE

Back To School

It is not just us who have enjoyed summer – our furry friends have too! Long, lazy days fi lled with petting, snacks and walks have been fun for our four legged pals, but now as we all head back to work and school, how do we keep our pets happy when we are not at home? By Shelley Welti

A

s pet owners, we feel the guilt as we leave our furry friends at home on their own, and probably never more so than after long periods of time spent at home with them, like the summer holidays. To help us all combat those feelings of guilt, here are a few top tips: Walkies and Playtime The morning routine may be hectic enough, but getting some playtime in with your puss or pooch is well worth setting the alarm clock earlier for. Not only will an early morning walk or play session benefit your pet, and tire them out for a few hours, but it will also be great for you too, with health benefits, including reducing your stress levels – exactly what we all need ahead of another busy day. Pop Back at Lunchtime Dog owners know that leaving your pooch for more than four hours is not recommended, in fact most animal charities advise that dogs left regularly for more than four hours can become agitated, unfit and unenthusiastic. If you are in a position to pop back and check on them, do so. If you are not able to make the round trip in an hour, ask a friend, family member or neighbour to give them some company.

Get Them a Play Pal Dogs are pack animals, so they enjoy being in the company of other dogs. Even aloof cats can become more homely with the addition of a new friend. Whether you choose to add a new pal to your brood or partner up with a friend who has a pup who loves to play, giving your pet a pal can stop them getting bored and pining for you. Get a Pet-Sitter If you are out all day and have no-one else to drop in and check on your pet, getting a pet-sitter is a great way of ensuring that they have attention and gives you peace of mind. There is a range of services that most sitters offer – from feeding to walking, petting to playing. Meet with them to talk through your pet’s needs and relax, knowing they are getting the fuss they deserve while you’re at work. All Day Doggy Day Care Doggy day care has become so popular with so many of us working 9am - 5pm. It gives our dogs a full day of playing and walking while socialising with other dogs too. Either drop your dog off on your way to work or many day care providers will usually pick up dogs in the morning. They will then be treated them to an action-packed full day of walks, games and play with other pups, before you return home for the final walk of the day!

Rediscover the love of your life Unless you are a single parent, you will be left with your partner and this can be a difficult time if you discover that there is a problem with your relationship you had not faced because having the children around helped to cement your relationship. If your children were the only bonding force in your relationship, you and your partner may need to work on your relationship. Acceptance that this is a difficult time of transition can allow both of you to forgive the uncertainties and messiness of growing together as a couple without children again, this as an opportunity to rediscover each other. Focus On The Positives

Focus on the positive changes - although, this does not remove the importance of your sadness and the transition you and your children are going through, it does help you to see things positively. Some of the positives include – the fridge will not need filling so frequently, romance with your partner may increase, there will be less washing and ironing to do, lower water and electricity bills, you can run across the landing naked, join the National Trust and most of all, enjoy the sense of accomplishment that you have raised a child who is capable of going out into the world!

I would say that about 90% - 95% of our business all comes directly from the RH Uncovered magazines! Good Wills and Estate Planning are local Estate Planning Practitioners and first advertised with us in 2009. We asked Naz why she first chose RH Uncovered and what sets us apart from other local publications. “Our business is quite transient, so we are constantly looking for new clients, which is why we need to advertise for new business on a regular basis. We chose the RH Uncovered magazines because they are a local publication and they are very established, the previous owner of our business would use them to advertise and recommended them to us. We advertise every month and we have done consistently since January 2009, which is really important for our presence and brand awareness. We would never drop our advertising in RH Uncovered magazines, we will carry on consistently doing it, because we see such a good return from running it. We ask every single client that comes to us how they found us. The majority of the time they have either come directly from one of the RH Uncovered magazines or it has been a referral from an existing client - but then a majority of our referrals have then come from clients which have initially come from the RH Uncovered magazines so I would say that about 90% - 95% of our business all comes directly from the RH Uncovered magazines.

We advertise every month and we have done consistently since January 2009, which is really important to maintain our presence and to raise our brand awareness. I think the main difference with advertising across the RH Uncovered magazines, is that they are filled with informative articles that are interesting to our target audience, so every month people pick them up and they will read them. I find the guys at Mantra Magazines are always really friendly and always eager to help out. If we ever want any tweaks to our adverts – they will always do them for us. If we have any issues or need any customer service there is always somebody there to speak to us on the phone or reply to an email. We would never drop our advertising in RH Uncovered magazines, we will carry on consistently doing it, because we see such a good return from running it. We consider it great value when you work out the cost per thousand for the amount of magazines that are going out to people and delivered directly to their homes. I find the guys at Mantra Magazines are always really friendly and eager to help out! I have no doubt in recommending advertising across the RH Uncovered magazines for any local business looking to expand or get new customers coming in.” Hear more from Naz, and other customers, on our website at www.mantramagazines.co.uk/customer-testimonial-videos

We don’t have any problems recommending the RH Uncovered magazine to other local businesses because we find it so successful! Interior Blinds UK Ltd are local manufacturers, suppliers and installers of made to measure bespoke blinds and are based in Crawley Down (RH10). They started advertising in our first RH Uncovered magazine soon after we launched in 2006. They have since increased their campaigns and now appear in three magazines, so we met with Andrew and asked why they chose our RH Uncovered magazine to start their campaign all those years ago and how it has worked for them... “We were looking for a magazine that was going to be distributed locally. The beauty of using RH Uncovered really comes down to the fact in is going into local homes and distributed by the Royal Mail, and has articles as well as advertising inside it.

By advertising regularly and consistently, we find we get a very good return for the investment of the advert! We started off with using one of the magazines and now we use three of them on a regular basis so we get a large distribution throughout the whole of the local area.

We have built up this beautiful working relationship between our staff and their staff, to the point that they let us know what articles they are running so we can tailor our adverts to suit. What we do find is that more often than not somebody will walk in clutching a copy of the RH Uncovered magazine, or once we have asked them how they have heard us we find out that they have seen our advert. We have built up this beautiful relationship between our staff and their staff, to the point that they let us know what articles they are running so we can tailor our adverts to suit. HOMES

C’est Chic!

Are you planning to revamp your home? We have some inspiration for you with innovative ways to beautify your home in true vintage style. Simple changes can add value to your home through décor projects. Did you know that you could use a collection of vintage mirrors of different shapes and sizes to accessorise a blank wall and brighten your living space? Or geometrically shaped lights could lift the ambiance of your room to a new level? Remember, vintage is the new modern, so say chic! By Jacob White

T

rends in interior design are in constant change, here is our list of vintage looks hot right now!

Comfort Seat Create a living room that pampers you and your guests – bring in comfort and style with a cosy sofa and add a comfy and luxurious faux fur throw to increase the grandeur of your daily living space.

44

Mirror Image You do not want to place your plush sofa against a bland wall, instead, try adding an assortment of vintage mirrors – different shapes adds a cutting edge look and makes the wall come alive.

Storage Walls Looking for something elegant and rustic? Why not choose an antique-styled wall unit? When sat alongside modern furniture it provides a smart and stylish contrast but practical too!

Lighten Up! Lights really do set the mood and ambience of a room – try geometrically-shaped lights, especially effective over a dining room table, or in a hallway – when off they still look like a work of art!

Picture Perfect Pictures, whether paintings or photos say so much about us – they are décor and a gallery of our memories. Place in vintage frames and sit back and admire your happy memories.

Work It! Do you work from home? Heavy and robust desks from days gone by are a chic addition to any living room! All you need is to find matching accessories such as a desk lamp, and you are away!

Timing Is Everything Whether in the hallway, over the fireplace or in the kitchen – a classic time piece is essential to bring chic into a home. Metallic works best in living rooms while use wooden for hallways and kitchens.

What Is In Store? Storage is important for any home but storage and style should go hand-in-hand, why not mix old and new? Think about adding a vintage wooden cabinet which makes a real statement!

Book Up! Are you a book lover? Antique bookends are the perfect accessory for your beloved page turners! Heavy and often uniquely designed, bookends are proudly a shout-out chic accessory.

GARDENS

Restore The Lawn!

Is your lawn in need of some TLC? If during the school holidays your lawn doubled up as Wembley, Lords or Centre Court at Wimbledon, how can you revive your lawn with some tender love and care? By Russell Cobley Lawn Feed And Weed Treatment If you have not given your lawn a feed and weed treatment, it is not too late. Lawns need a balanced supply of nutrients all year round to help them look lush and green. You can purchase an autumn lawn feed from garden centres. If you have any weeds present you still have time in early autumn to get rid of them by hand, or by using a dedicated lawn weed killer product. Just be careful not to over apply the feed and weed products, otherwise, you can cause long term lawn damage. Renovation Many lawns have a layer of organic matter on the soil surface, which limits water and nutrients from reaching the roots and encourages moss. If you have more than 2cm of thatch or moss consider raking or mechanically scarifying it out. Water daily if no rainfall is present, and for larger areas, it is advised to use a more efficient petrol scarifier. For moss, use a moss control product before lawn scarification. The soil under the lawn will have become compacted from the summer use. Compaction means the grass roots cannot

for larger areas to repair. You can use a spade to cut and slice out the patchy turf, add top soil to level then lay the new piece of turf. Remember to water daily until the roots establish in a few weeks.

grow very deep, leading to the less drought tolerant lawn as well as decreased overall grass health and appearance. To reduce compaction, it is advised to annually aerate the lawn with a hollow tine aerator machine - forking over the lawn does not relieve compaction. To thicken up the lawn, spread quality grass seed over the lawn, especially after scarification and aeration, then water daily via a sprinkler if no rainfall. In a couple of weeks, you will have lovey green shoots appearing. For smaller patches, thinly spread some top soil, add grass seed, lightly rake over then water daily. For larger areas turf can be a better approach with autumn an ideal time due to the increased rain and soil moisture to get the turf to establish. Great for either a new lawn or

Mowing And Leaves Reduced sunlight and temperatures mean slower grass growth. Time to raise the mower up a height or two and aim to cut off the tops each time. If you have trees nearby, keep any leaves off the lawn as they will cause the grass to turn yellow or kill it off in a few days. Cut back overhanging vegetation blocking the sunlight to the lawn as it will lead to a greener, less patchy area and limit moss appearing. If you are unsure of the DIY approach, or lack time, consider contacting a local lawn care company, who typically offer a free lawn survey and quote to undertake your autumn renovation.

But obviously that it is when they ask if I want to renew – good that they are keeping me more than I say “of course - definitely!” occupied with work. I would recommend Mantra Magazines I would recommend to anyone who wants to get a business Mantra Magazines to anyone up and running or someone who’s got who wants to get a business up a good business who just wants help and running or someone who’s get their name in front of the public got a good business who just eye. The staff are brilliant and all very wants help get their name in front helpful. It’s a no-brainer, I’d definitely of the public eye. recommend them.” I think it’s down to the advert itself. They put a lot of work into the layout of my advert. You always get sent a proof as well, so if there are little bits you want to change, like the font, the colours or maybe adding a picture in – they will always work on it and make changes until it is perfect.

Michael Barker, Copthorne Garden Services
