Planning for the Perfect Wedding The average wedding takes up to 250 hours to arrange It’s every girls dream to have their fairytale wedding, but getting it right takes time! It has been said that the average wedding can take up to 250 hours to arrange, and costs anything up to £15,000. Whatever budget you have for your wedding, it pays to start planning early. There are endless points that need attention. You should, however, find that once you break up the tasks into smaller easily achieved tasks that it won't seem so daunting. Set a timetable to see what really needs doing, and when, to see how much of an issue it will be. As well as asking your Mum, also approach trusted friends to help you - planning your wedding should be an enjoyable time, not a period of suffering! One of the most important details of the wedding is the actual wedding date itself.

The key, is to start organising and planning as soon as possible. This is usually the detail that is taken care of first. Factors in choosing a date include the availability of the venue where the wedding will take place and availability of friends and family on the assigned date. Saturdays are always popular so you'll need to fix it well in advance. For similar reasons book reception venue and/or caterers at the same time, even if you don't know guest numbers. Deciding how many to invite is the next step and should be taken jointly by both families. TheTact and diplomacy are needed where one 'side' wants to import a coachload of thirsty, distant relatives but is unspecific about who's going to pay; likewise when a divorced parent declares: "If she's coming, I'm not". Don't forget to arrange your honeymoon early too, as making do with your second choice can be a lasting disappointment. Confirm the booking in writing and re-confirm close to your departure date.

Planning the perfect wedding, continued

“ Except for her spouse, the photographer is arguably the most important wedding decision a bride will make With the book-ahead basics done, it's time to choose your bridesmaids, best man, ushers and page boys - and to spend time on one of the nicest tasks; shopping for dresses and accessories for yourself and your bridesmaids. Once this is done you can forge ahead with booking your other service providers - remember that the best service providers are booked well in advance. Except for her spouse, the photographer is arguably the most important wedding decision a bride will make. The flowers may be fabulous, the setting may be romantic, and the entire gathering may be moved to tears by the proceedings, but your own and your families' memories of the whole celebration will begin to fade even before the flowers do unless you hire a professional to record this momentous occasion for you to enjoy for years to come.

Planning the perfect wedding, continued Book the florist. The bridesmaid's outifits will set the trend for the colours of the flowers, so keep this in mind when choosing the colour theme. These can range from the most flambouyant bouquet to the simplest white lilies. The most important being the bride's bouquet, as this will feature in most of the wedding photographs. Choose a florist who will spend time with you and be as creative as you want them to be! When ordering your wedding cake remember that this is another important feature, as it will appear in the "cutting of the cake photographs", another staple of the wedding album. Don't feel pressured to stick to the traditional fruitcake though as there are endless fillings to choose from! Make sure you have your slot written in red indelible ink at the hairdressers! Get a picture of your gown and headdress if possible this will help your hair stylist. Most importantly, don't just make the one appointment with your hairdresser - have a couple of "practice runs" so that you can experiment with styles and have a good idea of the amount of time you are going to need to put by on your Big Day! 12

If you're planning a church wedding, see the vicar again, confirm the banns and consult him, or her, about music, flowers, confetti, bells and the order of service.

“ Draw up a wedding gift list - this is one of the most enjoyable chores, so make the most of it Arrange wedding stationery, including invitations and order of service sheets. Allow four to six weeks for this. Send out invitations (at least six weeks before the big day), and remember to keep a list of who has accepted and who has refused. Book a hotel for the wedding night, if applicable. Draw up a wedding gift list - this is one of the most enjoyable chores, so make the most of it. Choose your wedding ring and going-away outfit. Organise floral arrangements for the church and reception. Order bouquets, buttonholes etc. Ssend out gift lists to those who request one.

Choosing Your Wedding Venue Picking the perfect wedding venue is an important part of planning your wedding and one that should not be taken lightly. The venue of the wedding will be a large factor in determining your theme and decorations and it should therefore be done carefully. Some things to consider when picking a wedding venue are listed below T r u s t . First and foremost you want to trust your instincts when picking a wedding venue. It pays to take time and visit as many different venues as possible. Compile a shortlist and make arrangements to visit the sites with your fiancĂŠ ahead of time. It can help to keep a list of the venues that you visit and jot down a few notes about each one. This will help jog your memory after you have visited 10 or 15 sites it can become difficult to remember each one. Take your time and absorb the surroundings. Imagine your wedding in your mind and see if it fits with the place. Most of all trust your instincts. You will know when you have found a good potential site it will just feel right. S p a c e . You want to carefully consider the amount of space available at the wedding venue. Is it large enough to hold your entire wedding party? Or if you are planning to have a smaller intimate wedding you do not want a site that is too large either. R e s t r i c t i o n s . Check with the person giving you a tour of the site if there are any restrictions. Sometimes there can be restrictions about the amount and type of wedding decorations that can be used and you will want to know this beforehand. Sometimes there can also be restrictions on noise and this is something you will want to know when making your plans. If you know what the restrictions are but really love the wedding venue it can be fairly easy to adapt the decorations and wedding plan to fit the venue and its restrictions. P a r k i n g . This is something to think about when you visit the venue. Is there enough parking space for everyone who is attending the wedding. Expecting guests to park far away and walk can really be a lot to ask. You want the event to be as easy as possible and ample parking can really help your guests feel welcomed. This is especially true of those guests that arrive fashionably late to the event!! By visiting potential wedding venue sites beforehand you can really learn a lot and then make an informed decision based on your findings. The most important thing to consider is how you feel about the site. Again trust your instinct in this and make sure the venue is something that speaks to you. It should be a place where you can easily imagine either getting married or holding your reception.

Relax into Reiki

Reiki is an ancient form of healing believed to have spread through Tibet, China and India a few thousand years ago. It was rediscovered in the late 19th Century in Sanskrit teachings from the days of the Buddha by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Christian minister and theology teacher. The word Reiki is Japanese, where "Rei" means "Universal" and "Ki" means "Life Energy", the same as the Chinese "Chi" or the Indian "Prana". Reiki is the vital life energy which flows through all living things and which can be activated for the purpose of healing, working on all levels - spiritual, physical, mental and emotional.

The Reiki healer acts as a channel for this life energy which the recipient of a Reiki treatment draws via the healer, activating the body's natural ability to heal itself. Reiki goes to the deeper levels of a person's being, where many dis-eases have their origin. It works wherever it is most needed within the body, mind and spirit, releasing blocked energies, cleansing the body of toxins and working to create a state of balance. Channelling Reiki does not deplete the healer's own energy. It energises and revitalizes. Reiki is helpful, wherever there is a will to get well, in treating any disease, even chronic ailments, and will complement and increase the effectiveness of other kinds of

20

treatment and medication. It is a complete safe, natural and holistic method of hands-on healing. Most people think of healing as just getting rid of physical symptoms, but Reiki can be applied to all aspects of daily life. You can heal plants, animals even the earth, and send Reiki to resolve a situation. Reiki is healing energy in the truest sense. A Reiki treatment affects each individual in a very personal way. The results are determined by the needs, which are not always obvious, of the person being treated. It is a great tonic, and if you are well, Reiki will help you stay that way! Receiving Reiki treatmet is a very simple, non-intrusive and extremely powerful process. A treatment session lasts between one to one and a half hours. It is usually done with the recipient lying down, fully clothed and covered with a blanket, on a massage table.. The therapist gently places her or his hands in various positions over the body enabling the recipient to draw the energy where it is needed. Each position is held for a few minutes. There is no pressure, making it ideal for treating the very young and the elderly, pregnant women and those recovering from surgery. Most often the whole body is treated, not just an isolated area. This enables the energy to go right to the source of the imbalance and not just to the manifesting symptoms.

Call 01293 824 088 to advertise in RH10 Uncovered

During a treatment you will generally feel a pleasant sensation of warmth or gentle tingling in the area being touched. As the energy comes into balance, stress and tensions are released and there is a deep sense of relaxation and a feeling of wellbeing. You may even fall asleep! Anyone can channel Reiki even children. The beauty of Reiki is its simplicity. You do not learn Reiki, you accept Reiki. It enhances and increases your natural ability to heal. Working with Reiki increases your self-awareness and accelerates your spiritual growth. To be able to channel Reiki you need to attend a First Degree workshop which usually takes place over a weekend. During the workshop you will receive four attunements which clear the healing channels and enable the Life Force Energy to flow through you. The empowerment is there for life. If you have any questions or enquiries about treatments, attunements and teaching, please do not hesitate to call Patricia Arnold who is a Reiki Master, Teacher and practitioner who has monthly Reiki shares and attunement week-ends. Spring into a Game of Golf

Spring is well and truly upon us, maybe its time to venture out into the fresh air, blow away the cobwebs and meet new people. So why not try Golf?

RH10 Uncovered looks into the benefits of playing the game of golf. We have interviewed a succsessful golfer from Copthorne who is currently representing England in the Senior Amateur Team. There are also some amazing reader offers on golf equipment offered by our sponors from Golfmad Ltd. There are also some terrific money saving vouchers provided by Burstow Golf Club. Golf has always been a popular sport among many different people. It is often associated with executive businessmen and while it is true that golf is a particularly popular choice with many businessmen, it is also popular in other walks of life. You will also be humbled by the process of learning HOW to golf.

22

Like any project you approach in life your attitude and expectations will determine your enjoyment of the game. There are a number of good reasons to take up golf but the only real way to find out if it is a good choice for you is to give it a go. You should be able to borrow or rent some clubs in order to play a couple of rounds of golf because a set of clubs can prove fairly expensive if you only use them a couple of times before putting them in the attic.

“ Playing a round of golf every week is a very good way of helping to prevent heart disease and other illnesses Golf is a healthy sport. As well as getting you out in the fresh air it also exercises the heart, the lungs and many muscles when you are walking round the course. It may not seem much, but playing a round of golf every week is a very good way of helping to prevent heart disease and other illnesses.

“ Should you take lessons from a golf professional? You will learn that the road to a low handicap is earned through countless bad shots, bunkers, water hazards and triple digit scores. You will invest a lot of time in practice. Welcome every hook, slice and three putt as a learning exercise. Remember even the most horrendous mistake is a learning opportunity. How much golf equipment do you actually need? Golf is a very expensive game but there are affordable options. A high-end brand name set of clubs can set you back several hundred pounds but there are quality and affordable alternatives. Before buying clubs you should visit several golf stores and club pro shops. Test different types of clubs, determine which club length is best for you, get to know the different types of grips and the difference between graphite and steel shafts.

Take time to learn about the different types of golf balls, gloves, shoes and tees. Golf bags are available in a range of materials, make sure to choose one that is suited to your local climate. Golf shoes are important; make sure they are comfortable and waterproof. Should you take lessons from a golf professional? The answer to this question should be yes, but it depends on your budget. Golf lessons can be expensive but will make learning the sport more enjoyable, and you will also be playing good golf in considerably less time. A more affordable alternative is to purchase one of the many training aids and/or programs available on dvd. The modern golf game is based around perfect shots, scientific practice and ability Gone are the days of wearing plus fours and cloth caps and in are the days of larger heads, metal woods and graphite shafts. While talent and ability are the most important factors, there are certainly a lot of training aids and equipment around that will help to improve different aspects of your game. How to Warm Up Before Your Golf Game

How many times have you seen a player park his car, grab his bag, hurry into the pro shop, sign in and then dash to the first tee without any warm up at all? Chances are you've seen it a lot because that's pretty much a common routine for many players. It's not a good routine, but it does happen quite often. Now if you happen to be one of those types of players, try these tips and see if you don't improve your overall score. First, get to the course 30 to 60 minutes before your tee time. Simply getting to the course early enough that you don't have to rush around will improve your score. Not only will this extra time allow you to warm up physically, but it will also allow you to calm down emotionally. It will help you get 'grounded', so to speak, and that's very important before hitting that first ball. Now that you're at the course early and have some time, take care of business first. Sign in, change shoes, etc. You should immediately feel the comfort of not having to rush. And this does feel good!

“ get to the course 30 to 60 minutes before your tee time 28

Many players want to head straight for the driving range to warm up, but perhaps try the practice green first. Putting is a major part of your game and you should spend at least 5 minutes just putting to a coin or tee stuck in the green. This gives you a chance to get that smooth stroke motion back into your memory banks, but it also gives you a great opportunity to check how the greens/grass are playing today. Once you feel you understand how the greens are playing for the day, putt a few balls from various distances into a cup. Take your time, enjoy it. You've got plenty of time today! Keep in mind that on a well cared for course the practice green is almost always cut by the same mower that cuts the course greens. What you see and feel on the practice green is what you can expect to see and feel when you get out on the course itself. Before you leave your putting practice warm up session, do yourself a very big favor. Putt a dozen balls or so from 6 inches into the cup. You should be able to make just about every one of these and seeing those balls drop will increase your confidence in your putting immensely. Never mind that it's only a 6 inch putt...the trick is to "see" those balls drop. Try it, it works!

RH10:Local People Doug Arnold

aged 58, was born and bred in Copthorne and has been referred to as "one of Sussex Golf's most treasured possessions". He lists amongst his most notable victories as an Artisan golfer: Six National Artisan championships (Junior, Senior, Team, Scratch), and numerous Sussex Artisan Titles. In 1989, Doug joined Copthorne Golf Club and continued his successes with the County Championship in 1990, The English Senior Amateur Championship at his first attempt in 2002 and again in 2003. He also currently represents England at Senior International Level. We went to talk with Doug and find out where it all began….

How old were you and where did you start playing golf? “I was 15 years old and started playing at Copthorne Village Golf Club. The professional at Copthorne at the time, Alf Ashby, encouraged me by giving me my first half set of golf clubs. He had watched me hitting a golf ball and thought I had a talent.” When and how did you first realise you had a special talent for the game? “People say that I was blessed with a natural ability, and within the first year of starting playing I had won 6 or 7 trophies. My first handicap at the age of 15 was 16, and by the end of the following Summer I was playing off a handicap of just 1.” What was the first major tournament you won? “The News of the World Junior Championship in 1963 at Walton Heath Golf Club, Surrey.

Doug , aged 16, winning the News of the World, Junior Championship, 1963 (Colin Arnold, Len Arnold, Doug Arnold)

I won the tournament by 16 shots. That same year, my uncle, Len Arnold, (also a Copthorne golfer) won the seniors championship, I won the juniors, and together, we won the team championship.” What advice do you have for any beginners out there? “There are many things I could say really but I think the most important things, apart from enjoying the game, are: Have self belief and confidence in your own ability. I was very lucky in that I played a lot of golf with my Uncle Len, who was a very good golfer. I used to watch and learn from him, so if you can find someone who is a good golfer, and who is willing to play with you, you will learn a lot from them and it will bring you great benefits and increase your confidence. Alf Ashby had the belief in me, I used to grip the club the wrong way round and his first piece of advice to me was to change my grip. He told me to go away and practice for 3 months. Another piece of advice he gave to me was that if you practice 1 hour on your long game, you must practice 2 hours on your short game. You have to be able to play all the game, but the key to your success will be in your short game. What do you enjoy most about competition play? I never enter a competition and not go out to try and win it, but for me it is really about playing good golf. However, for me it's a bit of a double edged sword as I don't enjoy the limelight my perfect tournament would be to win, to be able to have a cup of tea afterwards and then to go home!

Doug after winning the English Senior Championship, 2003, Frilford Heath. Photograph courtesy of Tom Ward, more details at www.tomward.com What ambitions do you still have for the game of golf? I always wanted to win a National title and also represent my country, and I have achieved both of these things. Now I am coming to the age where my ambition is just to still be able to play a good game of golf, although I would love to win the British Seniors Championship. I hope to play in both the English and British Seniors Championships this year so watch this space!

RH10:VILLAGE COMMUNITY PAGES Every month RH10 Uncovered will be providing a FREE page for each village within its distribution area, for clubs, associations and teams to publiscise their news and events. (the only stipulation we make is that to qualify to have entries on this page you must be a non-profit making organisation or charity)

Do you run a group and need new members? Or perhaps you are holding an event that you would like our readers to know about? Then use your village page to tell everyone about it! RH10 Uncovered is happy to sponsor one page per village, however if you have an article that you would particularly like to have included that is too large for the village page, we can accommodate this in the magazine, but would ask that you approach a local business to "sponsor" your article at a cost of ÂŁ32 per page. The sponsoring company would then get a banner advertisement at the top of the page and also a mention for sponsoring your community event or news. We expect take-up of these pages to be popular so the sooner you book your "space" either on a community page, or by asking a local company to sponsor your article, the more chance we will have to plan ahead to ensure your news is included. If you would like to take advantage of either space on your appropriate Village Community Page, or to book space for a sponsored article, please let us know as soon as possible either by telephoning 0 1 2 9 3 8 2 4 0 8 8 or by emailing us at community@rh10uncovered.co.uk 34
