The History Boys

I’ve long had a keen interest in the old things of Horley, although admittedly this has mainly taken the form of scouring charity shops for second-hand bargains. However, when I lift my eyes beyond the shop fronts I see architecture that hints at an intriguing past...

T

he Original Factory Shop is housed within a Victorian train shed, and the Jack Fairman pub still boasts the art deco facade of its namesake’s car showroom where beer swiggers now replace gas guzzlers.

Whose famous footsteps might I be following as I pound Horley’s streets? Baden-Powell, Prince George, father and son speed freaks Malcolm and Donald Campbell, and the aforementioned Jack Fairman, himself a successful Grand Prix racing driver in his time - yes, all these famous folk once lived within Horley and the locality.

The Horley Local History Society was formed in the early 1950s by residents who had a keen interest in such things and who wanted to provide a forum where information from the town’s earliest beginnings to the present day could be gathered and discussed.

More than 60 years later it is still going strong and has a wealth of information about this fascinating town, its inhabitants and its past - and they don’t keep all this knowledge to themselves!

Twice a week society members can be found at Horley Library where they are on hand to answer questions and provide information about the town’s history.

They assist those researching family trees and encourage the collection of historical data, information and photographs. They also hold details of the family history and wills of notable residents along with film and microfiche records.

Some members have produced publications including ‘Men of Horley 1914-18, Lest We Forget’ which details the 122 men named on the War Memorial.

There is also a collection of maps dating back several centuries, along with parish and census records which make fascinating reading (I once discovered that the tiny Wimbledon house in which my husband, baby son and I jostled for space in 1995 housed a family of 14 in 1911!).

Meetings are held the fourth Thursday of each month at 7.30pm in the Methodist Church Hall, Victoria Road, with guest speakers and members giving regular talks, visitors are very welcome (£1 entrance fee).

In an age when technology and ‘progress’ urge us to look continually ahead, it is tempting to ignore the past or so disregard how our predecessors have shaped our towns and so consequently, shaped us.

Horley is no different; it has a long and colourful history which deserves a closer look...

From Fear To Friend

‘Never work with children or animals’ said the late W C Fields, but Ann Cook and the team of ‘From Fear to Friend’ happily ignore the old comic’s advice by working with both at the same time, and proving that it is in fact, rewarding, effective and fun!

nn has been a successful dog trainer for many years and in 2015 she started ‘From Fear to Friend’ - a voluntary group which helps children overcome their fear of dogs.

I remember my own childhood fears when visiting my elderly great-aunts who owned an irascible corgi with ankle-level jaws which closely followed my nervous path across their sitting room. Sadly there were no ‘Fear to Friend’ groups in the 1960s!

Ann runs 10-week programmes which are aimed at children between five and eleven-years-old. The venue is in Horley town centre on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month (5.00pm – 6.00pm).

All the team are volunteers, and no fee is charged, however donations help cover costs.

There are other similar groups in Essex and Kent and recent scientific research has shown that this system works.

The dogs come in all shapes and sizes from small spaniels to large German shepherds - each one is a Qualified Assistance Dog which has passed a 28

point assessment, and each is re-tested annually to ensure their continued suitability.

The handlers introduce them to the children sensitively, the level of contact between children and dogs is gradual and progress is made entirely at the child’s chosen pace.

Nothing is forced on them and they remain in control of their own participation at all times. Coping strategies regarding how to react around dogs are taught from the outset.

There is no limit to the number of sessions a child can attend ‘as many it takes’ is the maxim.

Throughout Ann’s sessions parents and carers remain at one end of the hall and initially the children are encouraged to play together before the dogs are brought in on their leads.

Activities like grooming the dogs with a brush (where the brush itself provides a distance between child and animal) and reading to dogs (when the child can focus on the words rather than their anxiety) all help to build confidence.

A safe dog-free zone is available at all times.

they are enrolled as ‘helpers’ and can participate in more lively activities with the dogs which further encourages them.

Every child makes good progress and many families testify to transformed lives as their children, once debilitated by anxiety and fear, can now go for walks, enjoy a holiday, visit dog-owning friends - even have a dog of their own.

One mother, whose daughter used to run into the road at the sight a dog, describes the team as ‘Life-changing people’, and they are! From Fear to Friend, an organisation which will make you paws for thought!

A Not-So-Silent Night

Legend tells of Orpheus, a Greek musician and poet whose melodious songs had the power to charm all who heard them, and just maybe those in the vicinity of St Mary’s Church, Bletchingly on December 5 will be drawn in by the music of Orpheus once again!

any readers will know of The Orpheus Centre, an independent specialist college in Surrey that specialises in performing and visual arts, and makes dramatic improvements to young disabled adults’ lives. It was opened in 1998 by Sir Richard Stilgoe following the success of his musical workshops run with the aid of neurologist Dr Michael Swallow.

Sir Richard realised that the performing arts could have a positive impact on the lives of disabled youngsters so he started a full-time residential course with just five students who learnt not only music and how to perform on stage but also practical skills that would enable them to perform well in day-to-day life too.

These first few students helped pave the way for the hundreds who have followed them to the Godstone centre which was once Sir Richard’s family home. There is a holistic learning programme, supported housing scheme and domiciliary care service.

The students’ ages range from 18 – 25 and the usual length of their stay is three

years during which time they can study for City and Guilds qualifications and nationally accredited Arts Awards.

Orpheus students entertain audiences all around the country and past events have included Glastonbury, the London Paralympics in 2012 and even Buckingham Palace!

Every aspect of the education is focussed on maximising lasting independence - and it works!

One parent describing the difference that the Orpheus Centre had made to his son said: “Orpheus has provided a safe place for him to grow in maturity and uncover abilities which may have remained hidden. As parents, we are immensely grateful.”

This carol concert is yet another demonstration of how talented and confident these youngsters can become.

year’s carol service, the staff and students felt they were ready to take things up a notch and pull out all the stops this year.

This concert will feature carols by candlelight, musical performances by Sir Richard and the students, seasonal readings by celebrity guests, along with St Mary’s Church Choir who will add their voices to the swell.

If all that singing is thirsty work, there will be mulled wine and mince pies to follow.

Could there be a more perfect way to start the Christmas season? I doubt it!

Santa is arriving early at Mitchells Ho! Ho! Ho! Santa is arriving early to bring a free gift to every child this year.

He’ll be meeting, greeting and listening to the Christmas wishes of children at Horley’s Mitchells Building Centre in Station Road, on Saturday 10th December, from 10am to 12 noon.

As part of the festivities, there will also be free mince pies for every visitor.

Established since 1900, Mitchells says Santa’s visit has become a tradition at the store.

A spokesperson at Mitchells says: “Santa makes a special stop to us every year, and last year Mitchells gave away over 100 free gifts to local children! It’s wonderful seeing so many happy, smiling faces eagerly waiting for Santa’s special appearance.”

Get Your Skates On!

What better way to celebrate mid-winter than getting your skates and taking to the ice? Back once again for this Christmas season is the annual Reigate on Ice and it is bigger and better than ever!

D

o you fancy yourself as the next Jayne Torvill or Christopher Dean?

The duo that melted hearts on St. Valentine’s Day in 1984 at the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo has inspired millions to get their skates on and to take to the ice.

Whether it was their perfect performance 32-years-ago set to Ravel’s Boléro or through their involvement in the hugely popular Sunday evening ITV reality TV show Dancing on Ice which ran for nine series between 2006 and 2014.

Well, don’t worry you needn’t be either an Olympian nor be ready to appear on national television to have fun at Reigate on Ice.

Back for 2016 with new features and the return of old favourites the event is bigger and better than ever!

Officially opening on Thursday, December 1 with a visit from the Mayor of Reigate and Banstead. This is followed by a public launch party two days later including a spectacular firework display and a performance by Shane Richie’s band.

If you’re looking for a wintery wonderland look no further!

Besides the ice, there will be entertainment from magicians, singers, fairground rides and – new for 2016 Santa’s Grotto.

So, whether on ice on not get set for full-on family festive fun!

There are so many ‘Tips for Surviving Christmas’ in magazines such as ‘two weeks before Christmas – now is the time to ice your Christmas cake’.

However, what do you do when the Christmas cake has been iced, and considerable inroads have been made into the fruity creation?

Let’s be honest, even for those of us that love the Christmas season, it can become so stressful, that by mid-December we wish it was all over!

or many people who already suffer from anxiety and depression, Christmas only serves to make matters worse - with the expectations to be the perfect host or hostess, families being thrown together for days on end, not to mention the never-ending Christmas shopping.

Christmas adverts on TV show happy families, laughing and joking while they meander from shop to shop, piling their arms full of beautifully wrapped gifts, before arriving home to the perfect house made all the warmer by the obligatory log fire.

At home, in front of the fire adoring parents’ cosy-up without a care in the world, having deposited all the gifts which were bought in one trip, under the perfectly decorated tree. Sound familiar in your house? No, mine neither and therein lies the problem.

We can get disappointed that life isn’t like it is made out to be in the adverts. Christmas shopping trips are fraught with frequent arguments, screaming kids, and hordes of people also stressed to the eyeballs - unless you are organised and shop online weeks ahead.

Imagine, feeling stressed or anxious all of the time, let alone just at Christmas, when all it does is make you feel worse because you know that you really should be enjoying this time of the year.

What can you do to get through without things getting out of control?

Most importantly and top of the list, keep appointments with your therapist, counsellor or doctor – yes it’s a busy time, but your treatment and wellbeing should still be at the top of your gift list to yourself.

Try to minimise stress by shopping online where possible - do this throughout the year, or in periods when you are feeling less anxious or stressful.

Better still – opt for gift cards from stores that your family and friends love. Order them online, plus they don’t need gift-wrapping!

Send greeting cards online either electronically or physical cards from www.moonpig.com or similar – the great thing about these sites are that you can often ‘organise’ your cards months in advance and just book the date in when they should be sent.

Don’t offer to ‘do’ Christmas for the family ~be honest and tell them you don’t feel up to it. This can also help alleviate the pressure on decorating the house. If you feel like doing the decorations then fine, but if you don’t no one is going to be disappointed.

If you are celebrating elsewhere and are expected to contribute food, buy it, don’t stress yourself further by making dishes. If you want to see family and friends, make arrangements under your terms – if you only feel up to an hour or so,

arrange to have morning coffee or a walk.

A good idea is to get out of the house, rather than have people visit you; this puts you in control of when you arrive and leave.

Finally, make sure you also treat yourself. Have a massage, manicure or pedicure, take walks in the fresh air, or buy a new book to treat yourself.

Hopefully some of these suggestions might ease some of the pressure we all feel at this time of year, helping to control those things we can, and getting extra help with those things we can’t.

COOK’S TIP

Ingredients 600ml double cream 200ml semi-skimmed milk 6 medium Waitrose British Blacktail Free Range Egg yolks 30g caster sugar 4 tbsp Baileys Irish Cream 3 tbsp demerara sugar If you have a cook’s blowtorch, use it instead of the grill to melt the sugar on top of the brûlées as it’s much easier to control the heat.

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 150ºC, gas mark 2.

Pour the cream and milk into a saucepan and heat until almost boiling.

Remove from the heat and set aside for 10 minutes.

2. In a heatproof bowl, whisk the egg yolks and sugar together with a balloon whisk until combined.

Horley-Twinning Association 25th Anniversary Weekend

ast weekend the Horley-Vimy Twinning Association played host to 24 visitors from Vimy, in Northern France, as the second leg of their 25th Anniversary celebrations. These began on Saturday with a trip to London for a tour of the Houses of Parliament and a whistle-stop tour of the city. On their return to Horley the evening entertainment took place at Oakwood School.

This entailed a welcome drink and canapés when the French and English were able to mingle and be introduced to each other whilst being entertained by the Roger Hind jazz trio. Next, three members of the Horley Singers sang a variety of English traditional songs and a Franglais song, with full audience participation in the choruses. The Horley Mayor, Mike George, gave a speech in English and French and presented the Vimy Mayor, Jacques Lariviere with a framed certificate and badge. The evening continued with a sit-down meal followed by barn dancing to the music of Two In Accord, two local accordionists.

A barn dance had been specifically requested by the French and allowed for fun-filled interaction between the two groups. The following day was spent shopping and touring the area with their hosts before all meeting together again at the home of Shirley and Elfrid Silcock for a buffet lunch. Elfrid had been the Horley Mayor at the time of the Twinning between Horley and Vimy and was part of the original group that set up the Twinning Association. During the weekend many longstanding friendships were cemented and a few new ones begun. Everyone agreed that it had been a wonderful weekend celebrating 25 years of twinning, in spite of ‘the elephant in the room’.

Big Ideas for Small Living Rooms If you long for more space (who doesn’t at Christmas with all those houseguests?), but lack the funds for a move or extension, there’s still plenty you can do to create space in your living room.

hether you have just moved and are finding your belongings just don’t fit, or have gradually accumulated too much furniture and too many accessories to fit comfortably into your space, there’s plenty you can do to regain that light and airy feel to any room with a little bit of effort.

Try to use objects and ornaments that will reflect light, so anything made of metal, glass or other light reflecting materials will only help to enhance the feeling of space.

Windows There are two schools of thought when it comes to windows – either do away with curtains and use simple blinds to fit with your existing décor, or to maximise the illusion of space by hanging curtains at ceiling height and the whole width of your wall, no matter what size your window.

Surprisingly, both give an illusion of more space!

Flooring To create maximum light reflection, take up carpeting and replace with wooden or laminate flooring – this will allow more light to bounce around the room giving a sense of more space.

Walls Instead of using small pictures on walls, go BIG. A piece of art (covering around 70% of the wall) will instantly make the wall look bigger.

Light wall colouring will also help create an illusion of space, as will hanging large mirrors, particularly opposite windows and doorways, as these will reflect the space outside of windows and through open doorways.

Finally, if there is any possibility at all, hide that huge 50” TV screen, perhaps in a unit with doors, or maybe ‘hidden’ in among other pictures on the walls. That way, at least if Coronation Street or EastEnders gets boring on Christmas evening, your guests can admire your art!

Choosing a Christmas Tree

Practical advice on choosing your real Christmas tree, tips on how to look after it, and how to recycle once the festivities are over.

t’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas but in most homes Christmas really starts when the tree goes up.

So, if you love the idea of a real tree, but don’t know where to start we’ll take you through the options.

This is now a time for choosing, you’ve dreamt of your ideal Christmas tree, now it’s time to make those dreams a reality!

We’ve picked a fab four of trees which you might like to consider and which will tick your festive boxes: Norway spruce The most traditional looking Christmas tree from Scandinavia with a mid-green colour and fine, delicate foliage and a distinctive ‘Christmassy’ scent.

Lodgepole pine Historically used by Native Americans to hold up tipis, this tree is a cheerful green colour, tinged slightly with yellow, and a sharp fragrance.

Nordmann fir A popular Christmas tree because the needles aren’t sharp and don’t drop as much as other trees with bold green needles with whitish underside.

Scots pine This one is Scotland’s national tree, it’s got a rich fragrance and is easy on the eye, this lovely conifer has bluey-green foliage and soft needles.

Caring is sharing Caring for your Christmas tree and ensuring it looks its best for the festive period really is sharing!

It’s all about sharing the colour, fragrance and also a beautiful centre piece for your decorations!

When you get home, stand your new tree in water and keep it in a cool place - a garage is a good place before you’re ready to take it indoors.

When you’re ready to move the tree indoors, cut off around one inch (2.5 cm) from the bottom of the trunk and shake gently to remove loose needles.

Use a special stand which are available from most garden centres to pot the tree with the trunk in water, but not with soil as this will stop water being absorbed.

Now, it’s down to location, location, location – place your tree in the coolest part of the room, ideally next to a window and don’t forget to water daily.

Post-Christmas recycling

Some councils will collect and recycle your real Christmas tree for you at the same time as they collect your rubbish, if you put it out for collection on your usual bin day from mid-January.

However, with others you cannot leave it on the kerbside, but there are special recycling sites where you can take your real tree for recycling during the month of January.

Christmas and Pets – What you can do to keep them safe If you are the owner of a cat or a dog, there are some ways for making sure your home is safe for your four-legged family members this festive season.

We spoke to Head of Training at Pets Corner, Lucy Ross for her advice.

hristmas may be very exciting for humans but for many animals it can be a source of anxiety and can present dangers with research showing that Christmas Eve typically shows a 20% increase in emergency referrals to veterinary practices compared to other days across the rest of the year.

Keeping decorations out of reach – cats and dogs can be very inquisitive animals and often want to explore new and exciting things.

The dazzle of decorations attracts many pets and animals may be tempted to chew on electric cables attached to lights and glass tree baubles can cause paw injuries.

Lucy, says: “Make sure any loose wires are tucked well out of the way – with special

Keeping an eye on Christmas treats – our furry friends might like to join us as we fill-up on our fancy festive gastronomic goodies this Christmas but chocolate, nuts, grapes and raisins are all extremely highly toxic to animals and can cause serious digestive issues.

Lucy, says: “Avoid the temptation to feed your pets with human treats and keep an eye on them to ensure they

aren’t sneaking a snack behind your back. Keep pets healthy with their regular diet and feed times.”

Protecting pets from the cold winter weather – as the temperatures drop at night make sure your pets are kept warm and given plenty of extra blankets to sleep with.

Lucy, says: “Invest in a goodquality animal coat that is fitted to your pet’s measurements.

This will help protect your pet outdoors.”
