Balance your body and mind

Mindfulness is a mental state that is achieved by focusing on the present moment while acknowledging thoughts, feelings and sensations within the body.

therapeutic technique has been proved to relieve stress, anxiety and is used as a form of pain management, ultimately by practicing mindfulness it can contribute to a better quality of life.

Anyone can do mindfulness; children, young people and adults can all benefit and it’s simple, you can practice it anywhere and the results can be life changing – well, they were for me!

Earlier last year I was taking high doses of medication to manage chronic pain and after immersing in a pain management course I decided to stop my medication and to use mindfulness instead.

There are different ways to develop an understanding and how to practice it.

Mindfulness can be learnt through a course or one of the many books you can learn through self-directed practice.

Being mindful while exercising increases breathing efficiency and also makes the experience more enjoyable.

The Koorana Centre in Ardingly hosts a variety of courses.

YogaZest in Burgess Hill offers mindfulness and yoga classes to children and teens in schools. They use ‘mindful’ movement, relaxation and storytelling to balance the body and mind.

In Sussex we are blessed with countryside walks, National Trust properties and gardens such as Wakehurst Place. A walk around grounds is a sensory joy, with exotic and native plants to enjoy.

As you walk around the gardens, try focusing your attention on the soles of your feet and how they feel as they touch the ground - notice the noise your feet make as they step on winter ground.

Focus on your breathing, the in breath and the out breath.

Look up at the trees and observe the texture of the bark and branches. Are there any birds? Can you see the sunlight through the foliage?

Try and find beauty or wonder and take a moment to appreciate it. It is scientifically proven that introducing mindfulness practice into your day contributes to a healthier and happier lifestyle.

I believe that by setting aside time to focus on ourselves and appreciate our surroundings we will not only be able to cope with stress better but we will prioritise what is important in our lives.

Holly’s Awash With Colour Holly Sellors is an accomplished artist, musician and psychology graduate from Burgess Hill and goes under the name ‘Project Lumino’.

rom the age of 15 Holly has been in bands as a bass and guitar player and has released music as a solo artist after being influenced by ambient electronic music.

After doing an online drawing course, Holly started doing landscape paintings and painted a portrait of a family friend’s dog for a birthday present and from then on, she hasn’t looked back.

Holly is a keen photographer and the first painting she sold was a seagull she photographed on Brighton Beach in 2012.

She joined an art club and found that she was being inspired by other local artists and said yes to any opportunity leading to attending exhibitions and networking with more artists.

At first, Holly found it disheartening as she didn’t sell a lot but she learnt from more experienced artists and has never forgotten what they taught her.

“I was always quite shy but always knew I wanted to achieve more and as an adult,

I’m much more focused and confident in myself.’

“I have a creative mind and a lot of motivation to achieve – I love to learn and improve my skills” Holly said.

Currently, Holly is a member of three art groups and sits on the committees, designs their websites and is involved in planning exhibitions and events.

“I really like to do animal drawing workshops in the community and have done demonstrations at schools and art clubs” Holly expressed.

Holly mostly works with water colour but likes to experiment in different mediums, so her portfolio also includes acrylics and incredibly detailed pencil-drawings.

Holly, says: “I find inspiration from the world around me and from the people I meet.

I love painting animals – they have such unique personalities and expressions.”

Positive thinking and motivation is integral to her work because

Holly works full time, she spends most of her free time doing art and because she really loves it, it never feels like work!

Holly finds painting animals a cathartic and therapeutic process, regardless of life stresses – ‘when I paint, I completely tune out.’

Holly’s favourite piece she has painted is of a group of chimpanzees because they are so intelligent and have human-like expressions.

She is critical of her work however she can appreciate the skill that others enjoy and its great knowing that she can provoke emotional responses from people through her artwork.

Building presence on social media gave her a big confidence boost and although it took a lot of time and effort, she receives the most commissions through social media like Twitter.

Every year Holly takes part in the Adventures Art Club, this year it’s in August at King Edward Hall, Lindfield and the Weald of Sussex Art Club.

Life-changing dog gives Sally a new lease of life

Sally Whitney was just 17 when she was struck down by a mystery virus making her unable to leave her bed other than to go to the toilet.

he was diagnosed with Lupus, a severe autoimmune condition and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome which affects her connective tissues and causes mobility problems.

Sally’s health worsened and since 2013 the previously fit and active woman has been confined to a wheelchair and unable to be left alone in a room in case she has a seizure or a medical emergency.

Since Ethan a golden retriever cross black Labrador who was trained by the Midhurst-based registered charity Canine Partners has come into her life, things have been on the up and they are inseparable.

The organisation provides assistance dogs that transform the lives of disabled people and now the 29-year-old from Brighton can be in her bedroom with no one but her four-legged best friend.

“He constantly monitors me, identifying when my normal movements turn into the jerky movements of a seizure and he calls for help” Sally said.

Ethan has learnt how to help with everyday tasks like fetching water, picking up anything Sally drops, opening doors and he even knows how to use Sally’s contactless credit card when they are shopping.

He chooses her underwear - with a penchant for the pink and lacy!

Sally, said: “Ethan has given me freedom and a positive outlook about being in a wheelchair, and we have a very close relationship.”

Ethan and Sally are one of Canine Partners’ 378 partnerships. These lifechanging dogs provide practical, physiological and psychological help, increasing independence and confidence.

“I am a smiley person and people would often come and

ask me about my bright pink wheelchair but also my health.’

“Now the first thing they ask about is Ethan and what he does for me which I love.’

“My poor health and disability are not the focus of the attention anymore” Sally said.

Each partnership costs the charity £20,000 - the charity receives no government funding and therefore relies on sponsorship and donations from members of the public to continue training its dogs.

Canine Partners aim to train dogs to meet the needs of people with the most complex of disabilities and the dogs are matched to the applicant’s needs.

Canine Partners host a calendar of events every year including its recent Pedal for Paws cycling challenge which saw more than 100 cyclists pedal across the South Downs raising more than £4,000.

Doing our bit for a local good cause!

Continuing our year of tenth birthday celebrations, this month we’re remembering how since 2006 we’ve been doing our bit for a local good cause!

ntegral to what we do at RH Uncovered is the local community and how we can best support it and no better way for us to demonstrate this is our commitment to local charities and good causes.

Most recently, in November a team from RH Uncovered took part in the Santas vs Elves Fun Run at Tilgate Park, Crawley for St Catherine’s Hospice to raise much needed money for the organisation.

The team of employees and their families had great fun dressed as either Santa or an elf and at the same time did it for a good cause so important to many families across our distribution area.

This is just one example of our charity-giving, in the past our Managing Director Matthew has taken part in a superhero-themed abseil and staff, past and present have done all manner of fundingraising!

Flatley’s legendary Lord of the Dance comes to Brighton Following the phenomenal success of its 2015 UK tour, Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games show is returning to the Brighton Centre next month to wow the crowds!

unning from Friday, February 10 – Sunday, February 12 Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games continues to thrill audiences around the world – recent venues include Brussels and Prague.

The stage show offers an intoxicating mix of dance and music that fuses the traditional with the contemporary in a classic tale that showcases an exceptionally talented young cast of performers.

Celebrating 20 years since the debut of the show Lord of the Dance, Flatley’s UK tour will present his protégés James Keegan, Morgan Comer and Matthew Smith in the role of the Lord of the Dance.

The show is produced, choreographed and directed by the Chicago-born Irish dance legend Michael Flatley who found huge fame across the UK and globally in the Irish dance show Riverdance.

In 1994 Flatley changed the art of Irish dance forever with

his breath-taking creation of Riverdance – a high energy take on a centuries-old cultural icon that would find fans as far afield as Australia.

The show first made the stage as an interval act at the Eurovision Song Contest being staged in Dublin almost 23-years-ago, but it soon proved popular enough to become a full-length show.

As well as Flatley, the show featured Irish dancing champion Jean Butler, going on to visit more than 450 venues worldwide and be seen by more than 25 million people and win numerous awards.

Flatley went on to create Lord of the Dance in Dublin in 1996, and it has since become synonymous with spectacular artistry and grand scale productions which mesmerise audiences in attendance.

With all the precision and thrills of the original, Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games features new staging, cutting edge technology, new costumes, choreography and world champion acrobats.

Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games premiered at the Palladium Theatre in London’s West End in 2014 before moving to the Dominion Theatre in 2015 as well as other UK venues.

The show has now gone on to Broadway in New York, and it was in the theatre district that Flatley opened a section of the city’s famous 42nd Street Flatley Way in his and the show’s honour.

Flatley embarked on his final tour in 2016, before suitably for the man associated with all things Irish performing on stage one last time in Caesar’s Colosseum in Las Vegas on St Patrick’s Day last year.

Flatley’s plan to make Brighton rock will again be a truly visual display of upper body movement and edgy rhythm patterns – for 2017 the show features new elements for a new audience.

New music is composed by Gerard Fahy, combining the best of tradition with all the excitement of new music and 40 of the world’s most outstanding young performers all directed

by Michael Flatley.

PET CARE Itchy Skin? Ear infections? Redness?

All Signs Your Beloved Pet Could Have An Allergy We all know us humans can suffer from allergies when it comes to our furry friends but what about when our pets are suffering?

ere’s all you need to know to help your pooch or puss combat their allergies, which can cause them so much discomfort.

How do I know if my pet has an allergy?

When we have allergies; it can be easy to spot. We may have sickness, dry itchy skin or generally feel out of sorts but whilst we can speak up to friends, family and our doctors to get a diagnosis, our four legged friends, sadly can’t. This means that as pet owners we need to look out for signs that our furry pals may be suffering.

Just like us; the main types of allergies that affect our pets are food and environmental allergies (the latter including seasonal itches and sniffles). The main sign that your pet could be suffering is itchy skin. So, if your furry friend is scratching more than usual, biting parts of their body or rubbing themselves against anything they possibly can to relieve the itch, chances are they are suffering from an allergy. If left untreated, this can lead to inflamed, red, raw skin, along with fur loss, sores, scabbing and become a life-long problem.

Another symptom to look out for is ear issues.

This is especially common in dogs. Ear canals become itchy and inflamed, as a response to allergies, and bacteria can develop and grow. If your ‘paw-ly’ pet has an infection, there may be an odour and discharge.

‘Pawfect’ tips for being allergy-free Now you know what to be checking for, how can you ensure your pet’s pesky allergies are kept under control?

• Give your pet regular baths and foot soaks Not just TLC treatments, baths and soaks can soothe the skin and also remove allergens that your pet may bring into your home.

Distressed Denim The love affair with denim continues! Already mentioned multiple times, denim is one of the easiest things to wear – as it goes with everything!

This season the focus falls on distressed denim with fraying, ripping and fading filling stores fast.

Find comfort in your food Sounds odd, we’re told to avoid comfort food! However, it’s about the foods we choose. A bowl of porridge topped with fruit is perfect!

Porridge is warming and a source of slow-releasing energy with the oats providing a high fibre addition to your diet which can also help reduce cholesterol levels.

A January state of mind As well as comfort food think about foods which can boost your January state of mind.

Think chocolate! Yes, you might have gorged on chocolates throughout the Christmas and New Year period but now is the time to try some of the raw chocolates on the market which boost mood.

Get outside Fresh air and long walks are vital to a healthy lifestyle. By getting out, you can help stay fit and youthful. January might be colder than other months of the year but don’t be afraid to embrace the outside world just make sure you wrap up in your favourite winter coat, hat, scarf and gloves!

Looking after garden birds this winter For many of us, watching garden birds play in the winter morning’s dew is a cute sight but the romantic image doesn’t come without us playing our part to help our feathered friends out.

atural food sources are in short supply, the weather is colder, and, with it being colder, they need extra food to keep their energy levels up to stay warm. This is where we can all help, by following a few simple tips – we will also be able to enjoy watching (happy) garden birds at play this winter.

Do Offer them a variety of food, especially fatty food high in protein, fat balls are a good choice – they can contain lard or beef suet giving our feather friends plenty of energy in the cold months.

These can be purchased from most garden centres or large stores or why not try making your own at home? This can be a fun activity that you can enjoy doing with your children or grandchildren.

However, do not use chicken, turkey or vegetable fat as these fats can be transferred onto the birds feathers during preening, clogging feathers and hindering flight.

Don’t Feed garden birds bread, especially white bread, it will not give them the energy they require to survive and it is likely to bloat them, making them feel full so they no longer look for quality food.

Avoid milk too, which can upset their tummies and make them ill as can mouldy or stale food. Salty food should be avoided as it can dehydrate and desiccated coconut can swell in birds’ stomachs.

Do Feed on a regular basis, birds rely on it – pick a time each day you will be free to top up those feeders, then your birds won’t waste precious energy visiting and hunting for food.

Don’t Use plastic net feeders, the plastic nets around fat balls for example, can be dangerous for birds - they can get tangled up.

Most garden centres offer wire cages at little cost to you.

Do Think about bird planting like us, birds look for shelter to keep themselves warm.

Evergreens are a good source of shelter and will offer them some comfort in the cold weather so think about shelter.

With the new year upon us and I am sure one of the most popular resolutions for 2017 is saving money or at the very least budgeting what you do have better – we’ve got help at hand for cutting your energy bills!

Play a game of draughts It might sound simple (and it is!) but by stopping heat escaping through unwanted gaps around the house you can save money on your heating.

An easy fix is to use some draught-proofing strips around windows, door frames and loft hatches and draught excluders for the bottom of doors.

By simply switching off your appliances rather than putting them on standby you can save up to £80 a year according to the Energy Saving Trust.

If you replace just one standard bulb with an LED equivalent can save you around £7.50 a year according to moneyplus.com, multiply that by each bulb, annually that’s a great saving!

Avoid a heatwave Worryingly, more than half the money spent on fuel bills goes towards providing heating and hot water – by turning down your thermostat by just one degree can save between £85 and £90 a year.

It all comes out in the wash A simple fix, make the switch from 60 degrees to 40!

Try washing your clothes at 40 degrees rather than 60, and when you do always put in a full load. If you can’t fill a load, make sure you use the correct setting for small loads and when your clothes are washed hang them rather than using a tumble dryer.

The heat of the kitchen Do you oven cook? Try to avoid opening the oven door when cooking, every time you open it the temperature drops by about 15°c.

However, an easy way to bring warmth to your home once you have cooked is to leave the door open to help heat the kitchen.

Change can do you good!

If you’ve been with your current energy supplier more than 12 months, there’s a strong possibility that you could save some money by switching supplier.

In the past it could take up to six weeks to move supplier but thanks to pressure from the regulator and government, it’s now a much speedier process.

Now, on average it takes up to 17 days which includes a ‘cooling off ’ period if you change your mind and according to research it can save you money!
