Out with the old and in with the new – a guide to charity shop shopping in Mid Sussex As High Street prices continue to rise, have you thought that there might be a cheaper way to get your fashion fix closer to home?

’ve been an avid fan of shopping in charity shops ever since I developed an interest in vintage clothes and stepping into them is like embarking on a voyage of discovery that leads to acquiring all sorts of gems.

Whether it be a British Heart Foundation shop or an Oxfam shop - both of which call Haywards Heath home, I step through the door and it doesn’t take long for the ‘shopper’s desire’ to take effect.

I look at the collection of Fairtrade chocolate, the miscellany of second-hand books, vinyl and rails upon rails of clothes.

Charity shops embody a sustainable fashion ethos, and essentially they recycle or upcycle clothes and homeware.

It’s an ethical way to shop, and there is a sense of self-satisfaction from knowing that your money is donated to good causes.

Trends are forever being reincarnated, whether on the catwalk, in Topshop or your local Cancer Research shop, so if you like to keep up-to-date with the latest styles it’s an accessible and affordable way of staying on trend.

However, if you’re like me and like to dress with a sense of individuality, rummaging through rails of second-hand clothes could be your ticket to expressing your creativity and uniqueness.

If you visit frequently, you are more likely to experience the ‘EUREKA!’ moment when you find a Dolce & Gabbana dress in your size or walking out of the door with a vintage 1940s day dress for which you only paid a pound.

Charity shops can sometimes be overwhelming places to shop in because of the range of products, so grab your friends and head into one of the many across Mid Sussex with these three tips in mind and you’ll become a connoisseur in no time!

1) Leave your preconceptions about buying from charity shops at home.There is nothing downmarket about buying from a charity shop and if you find it icky touching second-hand clothes, just remember that we were blessed with washing machines for a reason!

2) Be creative and adventurous.

I’ve found that this concept is easier to grasp when you are with your friends as they might find a piece that you would never think about wearing, but could, in fact, look absolutely fabulous.

Sometimes clothes require a pair of creative hands to make them look great.You could customise a pair of jeans with vintage fabric patches or if you find a top that is too big you

could ask yourself: Could I crop this? Could I belt it? Remember, anything your size and up is your size.

3) Don’t play it safe. Charity shops are full of the deliciously bizarre and the affordable chic, so use them as an opportunity to find those hidden gems. If you have difficulty imagining yourself in something, take it out of context and imagine it on a mannequin in Zara or Mango.

Two of my vintage coshoppers, Sara and Lucy, have been at my side in many a-charity shop expedition. As one of them has said, “its hugely satisfying being thrifty, you can get three or four outfits for under £50 – and it’s ethical as well.” So go forth and be charitable – happy thrifting!

Haywards Heath Author’s Acclaimed Debut A childhood ambition to write stories has led to a Haywards Heath mum-of-two reaching the top of the charts with her debut novel, Into the Shadows.

T

eaching assistant and keen photographer, Marie Jones, has been writing and developing characters from an early age.

When she was eleven years old, she was hugely inspired by best-selling author, Barbara Taylor Bradford OBE, and received a personal letter back from the writer.

This experience motivated her to write, and later that year her teacher read out a story to the class Marie had written - her first steps to becoming a writer.

Marie studied a three-year course in writing, before becoming a teaching assistant and has learnt so much about the writing and publishing industry in the production of her self-published novel.

“I invested in professional help to make sure the editing was thorough with constructive feedback” Marie explained.

“Writing is a discipline, and I adopt a daily writing routine while being a mum and having a job. I have a limited slot each day to write, so I have to be motivated. It’s easy to give up at times, but your personal creative flow will come if you persevere every day. I treat writing as a form of escapism and enjoy doing it.”

The novel tells the story of Lily Crossways’ mysterious journey that begins after a strange encounter with a long-lost woman on a beach.

Marie admits her inspiration came from a seaside holiday she went on with her family in Dingle, Ireland.

Transform your life at the Koorana Centre The Koorana Centre is a tranquil space in Ardingly that hosts an exciting programme of health and wellbeing activities including yoga, tai chi, pilates and meditation led by experienced practitioners.

T

he centre, once a chapel, has been refurbished from one quiet space into another. It’s a hub where people can reconnect and nurture themselves - becoming mentally, emotionally and physically balanced.

Throughout the week there are regular classes and workshops. The therapy rooms offer a range of treatments and is open every Friday 3.00pm 6.00pm for the Vitali-Tea events, including a free talk or class.

The centre hosts vitality days and wellbeing markets too, so if you’re craving a bit of relaxation time, away from your busy schedule, it’s the perfect place to go.

The origins of the word ‘Koorana’ are aboriginal, and means to ‘bring forward the children’. It inspires visitors to connect to creativity, spirituality and wellbeing.

Gabrielle Anya Rafello, a specialist in sensitivity who has run the centre for the past five years, says that individuals who are particularly sensitive may struggle with challenges that face them.

She launched the Koorana Foundation this year, which aims to empower vulnerable children and young people and provide the tools they need to develop confidence and self-esteem and feel happier and healthier.

Her programme includes a weekly creativity session for parents and carers with teenagers and also a three-day course for parents, carers and teachers, creating an environment where young people can thrive.

“Sensitivity is a gift, which can be extremely challenging if not managed properly. The expectations of the education system are making it increasingly difficult for children and young people to stay in balance.’

“Creative practices are also being removed from the curriculum, and this will result in children and young people becoming unbalanced in many ways” Gabrielle said.

“The tools that participants take away from the centre are very easy to learn and help them to feel relaxed, calm and at ease in any situation.”

at the Hawth Theatre The stage is set, it’s time for the curtain to rise – it’s panto season once again with boos, hisses and cries of “he’s behind you!!” and this year the Hawth Theatre has something to get you hooked!

rawley’s Hawth Theatre boasts an offering of lively and diverse shows throughout the year but without a doubt, a family highlight is the annual pantomime and this year it’s Peter Pan featuring EastEnders stars Shaun Williamson (Barry Evans) and Emma Barton (Honey Mitchell).

It’s a show not to be missed as Williamson takes on the role of the menacing Captain Hook.

With the same creative team behind last year’s record-breaking smash hit, Jack and the Beanstalk there’s fun and frolics guaranteed for the entire family – young and old alike!

Alongside Williamson, Barton appears as Tinkerbell with Cook and Line, the hilarious pirate duo from CBeebies Swashbuckle onboard ship and Hawth favourites Hilary O’Neil as Mrs Darling and Big Chief Sitting Cow and panto dame extraordinaire Michael J Batchelor.

From Albert Square to the Jolly Roger – Five Minutes with Shaun Williamson Ahead of his performance at the Hawth, I caught up with EastEnders legend Shaun Williamson, who for more than a decade played the loveable fool and car salesman Barry Evans in the popular BBC soap.

How do you feel about appearing as Captain Hook?

“I am very excited about playing Captain Hook in the Hawth’s forthcoming production of Peter Pan. I’ve played several panto baddies, but it’s my first Hook. He’s a classic villain from my childhood memories.

I loved the Disney fi lm, and I’ll have a lot of fun putting my own spin on it.”

How does stage compare to screen for you as a performer?

“If I am honest I prefer stage to screen.

Screen acting is so technical, and there are always long delays to allow for technical problems. You can’t beat hearing the feedback from a live audience. They’ll soon let you know if you’re doing it right!

The schedule suits me; no 6am calls!”

Have you done panto before?

It must be difficult to be away from loved ones at Christmas.

“It’s my fifteenth panto. I’ve played Abananzar in Aladdin more than four hundred times! Also, King Rat, the Sherriff of Nottingham, Buttons, Idle Jack and many more. My loved ones are used to it now.

It’s just the way Christmas is, and if I had a normal one I wouldn’t know what to do!”

What is your message to our readers thinking of attending the panto?

“What I can say to readers who are undecided which panto to go to is that Evolution (the production company behind Peter Pan) are renowned for their fabulous pantomimes. The scripts are freshly written every year; the costumes are lavish and the cast looks forward to seeing you.”

Finally, there was a sensational rumour that Barry might make a return from the ‘dead’ like ‘Dirty’ Den and come back to EastEnders, is there any truth in this rumour?

“There is no truth to the rumour that Barry is being resurrected by EastEnders.

I had ten years of it, thanks!”

Time to Get Back to Basics

Back pain sends millions of patients to GPs each year, more than any condition other than the common cold. According to the Office for National Statistics in 2013 more than 31 million work days were lost due to back, neck and muscle aches.

o who is susceptible to back pain, what can we do to prevent it and what are the treatment choices for sufferers?

With more than a third of the adult population affected each year, there aren’t any ‘typical’ sufferers. Although, stress, economic pressure, and lack of exercise can all contribute, most commonly back pain is due to poor postural habits or lifting objects incorrectly, and is generally not caused by a serious underlying condition.

When to see your GP Of course, there are more serious causes of pain and if your symptoms are persistent (lasting several weeks) or you experience any of the following then a visit to your GP is recommended: • Pins and needles, any numbness or weakness in your legs • Pain which intensifies over a number of weeks • Loss of bladder or bowel control • Difficulty in walking • Unexplained weight-loss Treatment While many instances of back pain can be self-managed with over-the-counter painkillers and perhaps hot or cold compresses, it is also important to try to keep as active as possible -inactivity may exacerbate the issue.

For more persistent or acute pain due to a sport or work injury, your GP may refer you for treatment with a manual therapist such as an osteopath, chiropractor or physiotherapist.

Most back pain will dissipate or disappear within a few weeks of treatment, and only around 1% of all back pain or injuries ever require surgery, but your GP will be able to refer you should they feel this is necessary.

Prevention Prevention is always better than cure, and as we have already seen most back, pain can be prevented with good posture, activities that can reduce stress or adequate manual handling training. Regular exercise, such as swimming or walking will also help as will any movement that encourages the stretching and resulting strengthening of your muscles such as pilates or yoga.

You may be lucky in that you have a fairly neutral colour scheme in your home already, in which case the sky is the limit for you, but if not, we’ve come up with some more ideas, one of which is bound to be a perfect match for your décor.

Planting Trees & Shrubs Arguments rage between gardeners on the best time to plant trees and shrubs. The consensus is that anytime between October and March is a good time.

However, planting in the autumn is preferred by many while the ground still retains warmth and moisture.

bove ground, the autumn season for most trees and shrubs is a dormant one, the leaves have fallen or are in the process of doing so, and therefore the plant doesn’t have the hard work of having to pump water through the roots to the leaves and shoots above.

Planting now gives the shrub the chance to expend their energy on the root system of newly planted trees and shrubs, encouraging rapid root growth, ensuring that the plant will be well-established when the growth explosion in the spring takes place.

If you can find bare-rooted trees, then go for this option every time. A container grown tree will mean that the root system won’t be as healthy and will likely be quite crowded, which will make them difficult to tease out when you want to plant. If you can’t find a bare-rooted specimen, then container grown is fine, but be sure to spend some extra time teasing out the roots to give

them the best possible chance to thrive.

When it comes to planting, begin with a good sized hole, ensuring that it is several inches (or more) wider than the longest of your roots on your tree or shrub. Prepare it with a mixture of good organic matter such as garden compost and well-rotted manure which will help ensure it doesn’t dry out. If you have a heavy soil, add some grit and leaf mould too to help with aeration and drainage around the roots.

You only really need to stake large trees, or if you are planting in a particularly windy area.

Otherwise, the best advice is that if a tree is given a chance to move around a little, it will form a stronger trunk in the long-run. If you are going to stake, use a short stake, at an angle, with a proper tree tie fitted so as not to damage the bark.

Finally, ensure thorough and regular watering is carried out during any dry spells for at least the first couple of years after planting. Bearing in mind that lack of water is the biggest cause of newly planted trees dying, if I only needed one reason to convince me to plant in the autumn, this would be it.
