Gatwick TravelCare -

Helping Passengers Help Themselves Gatwick TravelCare is an independent registered charity that has served alongside Gatwick Airport’s terminals since 1986, assisting troubled passengers - in June last year they celebrated their 30th Anniversary.

n 2015, the office helped more than 1,250 clients with travel-related problems in person and more than 800 enquiries by telephone. Based in Gatwick’s South Terminal, the charity operates seven days a week, all year round (with the exception of December 25, 26 and January 1).

A team of five duty managers and 24 volunteers rely on the co-operation and goodwill of everyone in the airport community.

Each day the Gatwick TravelCare team helps to resolve a wide range of issues including financial difficulties, missed flights and passport irregularities.

The team also works in conjunction with airlines, handling agents, embassies, social services and the police to provide their passengers with the best service. Often, passengers only need the use of a telephone, email or some basic support.

If necessary, the charity has clothing and toiletries that can be used in the showers at the airport. Family and friends are usually the first stop for financial help if this is not possible the charity may be able to assist funding clients to their countries’ embassies or consulates for help.

The team has built up a wealth of knowledge over the years and often has to play detective by tracing phone numbers, tracking down relatives and ensuring the safety of passengers.

Another important part of the charity’s work is part of the airport emergency call-out team.

Staff and volunteers participate in regular training with an exercise taking place every 18 months. In September 2001, they played a part in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks in by assisting stranded passengers and matching them with local temporary accommodation.

Other emergency help has included returning passengers from the Bali and Sharm-el-Sheikh bombings, countries hit by the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami and countries affected by the Arab Spring and an aircraft which made an emergency landing with passengers leaving personal belongings behind.

“Looking after the welfare of passengers, even in traumatic circumstances, is all in a day’s work” said a member of the team.

Volunteering with TravelCare could give you a glimpse into lives from around the world and be incredibly rewarding. You can become part of a caring network stretching throughout Gatwick and beyond.

Crawley’s answer to Bridget Jones –

Adam’s Bachelor Rules

Meet Adam, a divorcee in his early forties who did not expect to be single and finds he no longer knows the rules of dating.

M

eeting a number of unsuitable women Adam draws up rules that he hopes will improve his chance of finding the right partner but they are also designed to stop him from getting into challenging situations.

The rules are based on his experience and philosophical logic, which Adam believes are more pragmatic than simple emotion and impulse. Will his head rule his heart as he rejoins the dating roller coaster?

Adam Bachelor is the creation of Crawley writer, Nelson Brooks - a writer of poetry and short stories for more than 20 years, Rules for a Born Again Bachelor is his first novel.

Drawing on his experience of living and working in the City of London to write this male-take on the Bridget Jones Nelson Brooks, the pen name for author Dave Brooks explains how he arrived at this novel.

“I have been writing poetry for more than 20 years and a member of the National Poetry Society for the last eight.

Although I had been drawn to poetry first, over the last few years, through both work and spare time activities I have produced an increasing amount of prose.’

“I have lived in Crawley for over twenty years and I am a huge fan of the town,

The idea was born five-yearsago when he was asked to produce the first two chapters of a novel for a part-time English and History degree.

A year later he produced a draft of Rules for a born-again bachelor.

Dave said: “Starting out as a novelist is about juggling a life and a day job until some form of income starts to flow. Train seats and tables willing, I have done a lot of my writing on the train over time. I am looking at more innovative ways to expand my readership. I tried a tie up with a football club mentioned in the book for instance.”

Not keen to rest on his laurels, after completing several part-time degrees and publishing his first novel, in addition to his full-time job Dave can be found blogging on information security through story telling on www.theanalogiesproject.org and also about horse racing on www.hoofing-it.com,

which is an attempt to visit every horse race track in the UK and Ireland over 5 years.

He is currently at 21 out of 90!

“My second novel is written and currently being edited. It is not a sequel, but rather a murder and is entitled “The Perry Gene”. My intention is to write one book a year going forward (plans are already in place for some) and use the rest of my time on poetry and short stories.”

His biggest supporters and harshest critics are his wife and three children, who, he claims to challenge his every written word, which is exactly what every writer needs.

Mindfulness is a mental state that is achieved by focusing on the present moment while acknowledging thoughts, feelings and sensations within the body.

t is a therapeutic technique that has been proved to relieve stress, anxiety and is used as a form of pain management.

Ultimately, practicing mindfulness it can contribute to a better quality of life.

Anyone can do mindfulness; children, young people and adults can all benefit. It is simple, you can practice it anywhere and the results can be life changing – well, they were for me!

Last year I was taking high doses of medication to manage my chronic pain and after immersing myself in a pain management course I decided to stop my prescribed medication and to use mindfulness instead.

There are different ways to develop an understanding of it and how to practice it. It can be learnt through a course or one of the many books where you can learn through self-directed practice at home.

Swimming is a great way to reconnect with your body and increase fitness levels simultaneously.

K2 leisure centre in Crawley have great facilities including an Olympic sized swimming pool and they hold regular classes and open swimming sessions suitable for all ages and abilities.

Walking is another gentle but effective exercise perfect to pair with mindfulness practice and there are many beautiful walks, parks and National Trust gardens to explore.

Flatley’s legendary Lord of the Dance comes to Brighton Following the phenomenal success of its 2015 UK tour, Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games show is returning to the Brighton Centre next month to wow the crowds!

unning from Friday, February 10 – Sunday, February 12 Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games continues to thrill audiences around the world – recent venues include Brussels and Prague.

The stage show offers an intoxicating mix of dance and music that fuses the traditional with the contemporary in a classic tale that showcases an exceptionally talented young cast of performers.

Celebrating 20 years since the debut of the show Lord of the Dance, Flatley’s UK tour will present his protégés James Keegan, Morgan Comer and Matthew Smith in the role of the Lord of the Dance.

The show is produced, choreographed and directed by the Chicago-born Irish dance legend Michael Flatley who found huge fame across the UK and globally in the Irish dance show Riverdance.

In 1994 Flatley changed the art of Irish dance forever with

his breath-taking creation of Riverdance – a high energy take on a centuries-old cultural icon that would find fans as far afield as Australia.

The show first made the stage as an interval act at the Eurovision Song Contest being staged in Dublin almost 23-years-ago, but it soon proved popular enough to become a full-length show.

As well as Flatley, the show featured Irish dancing champion Jean Butler, going on to visit more than 450 venues worldwide and be seen by more than 25 million people and win numerous awards.

Flatley went on to create Lord of the Dance in Dublin in 1996, and it has since become synonymous with spectacular artistry and grand scale productions which mesmerise audiences in attendance.

With all the precision and thrills of the original, Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games features new staging, cutting edge technology, new costumes, choreography and world champion acrobats.

Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games premiered at the Palladium Theatre in London’s West End in 2014 before moving to the Dominion Theatre in 2015 as well as other UK venues.

The show has now gone on to Broadway in New York, and it was in the theatre district that Flatley opened a section of the city’s famous 42nd Street Flatley Way in his and the show’s honour.

Flatley embarked on his final tour in 2016, before suitably for the man associated with all things Irish performing on stage one last time in Caesar’s Colosseum in Las Vegas on St Patrick’s Day last year.

Flatley’s plan to make Brighton rock will again be a truly visual display of upper body movement and edgy rhythm patterns – for 2017 the show features new elements for a new audience.

New music is composed by Gerard Fahy, combining the best of tradition with all the excitement of new music and 40 of the world’s most outstanding young performers all directed

by Michael Flatley.

PET CARE Itchy Skin? Ear infections? Redness?

All Signs Your Beloved Pet Could Have An Allergy We all know us humans can suffer from allergies when it comes to our furry friends but what about when our pets are suffering?

ere’s all you need to know to help your pooch or puss combat their allergies, which can cause them so much discomfort.

How do I know if my pet has an allergy?

When we have allergies; it can be easy to spot. We may have sickness, dry itchy skin or generally feel out of sorts but whilst we can speak up to friends, family and our doctors to get a diagnosis, our four legged friends, sadly can’t. This means that as pet owners we need to look out for signs that our furry pals may be suffering.

Just like us; the main types of allergies that affect our pets are food and environmental allergies (the latter including seasonal itches and sniffles). The main sign that your pet could be suffering is itchy skin. So, if your furry friend is scratching more than usual, biting parts of their body or rubbing themselves against anything they possibly can to relieve the itch, chances are they are suffering from an allergy. If left untreated, this can lead to inflamed, red, raw skin, along with fur loss, sores, scabbing and become a life-long problem.

Another symptom to look out for is ear issues.

This is especially common in dogs. Ear canals become itchy and inflamed, as a response to allergies, and bacteria can develop and grow. If your ‘paw-ly’ pet has an infection, there may be an odour and discharge.

‘Pawfect’ tips for being allergy-free Now you know what to be checking for, how can you ensure your pet’s pesky allergies are kept under control?

• Give your pet regular baths and foot soaks Not just TLC treatments, baths and soaks can soothe the skin and also remove allergens that your pet may bring into your home.

• Clean and be chemical-free Vacuum and keep floors and their bedding areas clean (using non-toxic cleaners) to prevent allergies from starting and/or spreading.

• Have regular vet check-ups There’s a reason vets recommend seeing your pet regularly; to make sure they stay healthy!

Don’t forget to take them for a trip to keep them in tip-top condition.

The last symptom to look for is redness.

With the new year upon us and I am sure one of the most popular resolutions for 2017 is saving money or at the very least budgeting what you do have better – we’ve got help at hand for cutting your energy bills!

Play a game of draughts It might sound simple (and it is!) but by stopping heat escaping through unwanted gaps around the house you can save money on your heating.

An easy fix is to use some draught-proofing strips around windows, door frames and loft hatches and draught excluders for the bottom of doors.

Avoid a heatwave Worryingly, more than half the money spent on fuel bills goes towards providing heating and hot water – by turning down your thermostat by just one degree can save between £85 and £90 a year.

It all comes out in the wash A simple fix, make the switch from 60 degrees to 40!

Try washing your clothes at 40 degrees rather than 60, and when you do always put in a full load. If you can’t fill a load, make sure you use the correct setting for small loads and when your clothes are washed hang them rather than using a tumble dryer.

The heat of the kitchen Do you oven cook? Try to avoid opening the oven door when cooking, every time you open it the temperature drops by about 15°c.

However, an easy way to bring warmth to your home once you have cooked is to leave the door open to help heat the kitchen.

If you’ve been with your current energy supplier more than 12 months, there’s a strong possibility that you could save some money by switching supplier.

In the past it could take up to six weeks to move supplier but thanks to pressure from the regulator and government, it’s now a much speedier process.

Now, on average it takes up to 17 days which includes a ‘cooling off ’ period if you change your mind and according to research it can save you money!

Feathered Friends

Looking after garden birds this winter For many of us, watching garden birds play in the winter morning’s dew is a cute sight but the romantic image doesn’t come without us playing our part to help our feathered friends out.

atural food sources are in short supply, the weather is colder, and, with it being colder, they need extra food to keep their energy levels up to stay warm. This is where we can all help, by following a few simple tips – we will also be able to enjoy watching (happy) garden birds at play this winter.

Do Offer them a variety of food, especially fatty food high in protein, fat balls are a good choice – they can contain lard or beef suet giving our feather friends plenty of energy in the cold months.

These can be purchased from most garden centres or large stores or why not try making your own at home? This can be a fun activity that you can enjoy doing with your children or grandchildren.

However, do not use chicken, turkey or vegetable fat as these fats can be transferred onto the birds feathers during preening, clogging feathers and hindering flight.

Don’t Feed garden birds bread, especially white bread, it will not give them the energy they require to survive and it is likely to bloat them, making them feel full so they no longer look for quality food.

Avoid milk too, which can upset their tummies and make them ill as can mouldy or stale food. Salty food should be avoided as it can dehydrate and desiccated coconut can swell in birds’ stomachs.

Do Feed on a regular basis, birds rely on it – pick a time each day you will be free to top up those feeders, then your birds won’t waste precious energy visiting and hunting for food.

Don’t Use plastic net feeders, the plastic nets around fat balls for example, can be dangerous for birds - they can get tangled up.

Most garden centres offer wire cages at little cost to you.

Do Think about bird planting like us, birds look for shelter to keep themselves warm.

Evergreens are a good source of shelter and will offer them some comfort in the cold weather so think about shelter.

Hearty Beef & Beetroot Stew Thousands of recipes can be found at www.waitrose.com Ingredients 400g essential Waitrose British Diced Braising Steak 3 Oxo Beef Stock Cubes 1 tbsp plain flour 1 tbsp olive oil 2 onions, sliced 2 carrots, thickly sliced 1 cinnamon stick 180g pack Waitrose Sweetfire Beetroot Wedges, cubed 450g pack Waitrose Cheddar Mash, to serve

Method 1. Tip the beef into a large bowl then crumble over 1 of the Oxo cubes.

Add the flour and toss together well until the meat is evenly coated.

2. Heat the oil in a large saucepan and cook the meat over a high heat until nicely browned.

Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside.

Add the onions to the hot pan and cook for 5 minutes until softened and golden.

then crumble in the remaining 2 Oxo cubes.

Bring to the boil, cover and simmer gently for 2–2½ hours until the meat is very tender.

3. Return the meat and any resting juices to the pan. Add the carrots, cinnamon stick and 500ml water

4. Stir in the beetroot and cook for 5 minutes or so until heated through.

Serve with the mash.

Taxing Times

It has been a couple of years since the way that cars are taxed changed but many people are still struggling to get to grips with the new system.

The previous method of checking to see if your vehicle was taxed by taking a quick glance at the corner of the windscreen was a simple one but no more.

t worked well for more than 90 years but times, they are a-changing, and much like most things in life, the internet has replaced this task.

Since the scrapping of the paper disc, a large number of cars have been clamped or towed because of confusion over whether or not a car is taxed.

Gone are the days where you could sell a car with twelve months tax - these days, when you buy a car it automatically becomes un-taxed.

For some, it’s a cunning way of the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) getting more revenue. If you sell a car mid-month not only have you paid tax for that month, it is now

the responsibility of the new owner of the vehicle to pay tax from the start of that month.

To their credit, the DVSA send out reminders - they have to, after making the visual reminder in the windscreen redundant.

But if you want to be 100% sure, you can visit their website www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax to check for yourself.

The knock on effect that we, as an MOT testing station are seeing is that some motorists are speeding past their MOT due-date.

We’ve seen cars that are eight or nine months out of date because the owner is used to the MOT at the

Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) will also do this, but charge you for this service.
