Crawley Author Reaches For The Skies With New Book Unto The Skies: A Biography Of Amy Johnson, by Crawley author Karim Lalani is the compelling story of the lone British flyer who set out to break a record and then became the icon for a generation. By Jacob White

A

uthor Karim Lalani, who lives in the Pound Hill area of Crawley and who is currently between jobs has been writing and submitting material to publishers since his early twenties. He says he enjoys the free rein writing gives him and his imagination and that at school English was his best subject. Karim’s newest book is a biography of pioneering British aviator Amy Johnson, who was the first female pilot to fly alone from Britain to Australia. Flying solo or with her husband, she set numerous long-distance records during the 1930s, and in the Second World War she was a part of the Air Transport Auxiliary. The inspiration to write about the remarkable life of Amy Johnson began for Karim whilst he was still at school. He says that in an assembly in the 1980s his head teacher was talking glowingly about a former typist turned flier who embarked on a solo flight to Australia 50 years earlier. Time passed and the inspiration lay dormant, before in late 2000, Karim saw a news item on BBC South East about

an attempt to establish what happened to Amy Johnson after her plane ditched into the Thames Estuary in January 1941, veering off course in adverse weather conditions. That BBC news item sowed the seed for Karim, and he began to believe that the book was one he was destined to write. However, despite a huge admiration for Amy Johnson, and her phenomenal aviation achievements the writing and publication of the biography was far from an easy ride. Karim, said: “The biggest challenge to me in writing Unto The Skies was the necessary research whilst being employed full-time. I took a lot of Fridays as annual leave to immerse myself in a project that took from start to finish over five years, the challenge since has been securing publication.” On his writing, Karim, says: “I always find time to write even for just half an hour a day.” His advice for aspiring writers is simple, he says: “Be prepared for the disappointment of rejection and although it’s a cliché, whatever project you’re working on, get it written. Go back and edit later to get it right.”

Magic Johnson

As well as Karim’s work, Amy Johnson has appeared in dozens of pieces of popular culture, including: In 1942, a fi lm of Johnson’s life, They Flew Alone, starred Anna Neagle as Johnson. The fi lm is known in the US as Wings and the Woman. Amy Johnson inspired the song Flying Sorcery by Al Stewart. Queen of the Air by Peter Aveyard is a musical tribute to Johnson. In 2013, Doctor Who Magazine ran a comic story entitled A Wing And A Prayer, where the time-travelling Doctor encountered Johnson in 1930.

COMMUNITY Spotlight:

COS Musical Theatre

For 60 years a Crawley group has been staging award-winning entertainment for the town and surrounding area – in its 60th birthday year I spoke to Charlotte Cosh, a member of COS Musical Theatre to find out more about the group and its diamond anniversary celebrations.

S

By Jacob White

ince 1957 COS Musical Theatre, previously known as Crawley Operatic Society, has been entertaining audiences with some of the greatest musicals of all time. These shows have featured numerous Crawley residents, and those from surrounding towns and villages. Many members have grown up with the group, joining as children and now welcome their own children to the group, meaning it is a real family. The group started life thanks to Carl Wilmott, the first headmaster of Sarah Robinson Secondary Modern School in Ifield. After a great success with the production of Trial By Jury at the school, featuring pupils and staff, he invited a cross section of people he felt would be interested in forming a group to put on future shows, and from this the Sarah Robinson Group was formed in 1957. Rehearsals for the group started on a Monday night and this has not changed in 60 years of the group’s birth. In 1964 the group decided to change its name to Crawley Operatic Society, after a comment in an article stating – ‘Crawley now has an operatic society to be proud of ’. The group performed at Sarah Robinson for 15 years before moving to venues at Northgate and Hazelwick School before settling at Thomas Bennett School from 19771987. One of the group’s proudest

moments was being the first show at the Hawth Theatre in 1988. The performance of Hello Dolly in 1988 was performed once again on the same stage some years later for the group’s 50th Anniversary, with a number of cast proudly laying claim to having performed in both productions despite several intervening years apart. COS Musical Theatre has evolved through the decades, presenting not only the famous and well-loved musicals – My Fair Lady, Oklahoma, Carousel, but bringing new and vibrant musicals to Crawley such as Hairspray, The Wizard of Oz, and Monty Python’s Spamalot. With lots of competition from other entertainers and professional touring companies who perform at the Hawth Theatre, COS Musical Theatre prides itself on remaining the foremost amateur company in the area – it is now firmly not just about entertainment for audiences but a place for all to come together to enjoy performing or helping in a pastime they all love. The next production will be a celebration of musicals throughout COS 60 years – featuring shows performed throughout the years, at the Hawth Theatre, Wednesday, October 25 2017 – Saturday, October 28 2017. Tickets are available from the Hawth Box Office, for more details, call: 01293 553636.

60 Years Young! COS Musical Theatre is always ready for a celebration – to celebrate this year’s special birthday the group held a diamond anniversary party for members past and present at Tilgate Golf Club, with entertainment from members as well as lots of reminiscing with photographs, programmes and even an awards ceremony!

A Small Joint Replacement that makes a Big Difference

By Oliver Harley, Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon MBBS, BSc, MBA, FRCSEd(Plastic Surgery)

D

id you know that it is possible to do joint replacements for fingers? You probably know at least one person who has had a hip or a knee replacement for arthritis. Similar technology, on a much smaller scale, is available for finger joints which become painful as a result of arthritis. The hands are a very common place to get arthritis due to them consisting of 27 bones each separated with cartilage. The most frequently affected joints are those in the fingers. However, a finger joint replacement is much less common than hip and knee replacements due to the miniature size of the of finger joints. Despite this, the pay off for a patient suffering from severe arthritis can make this a very worthwhile option for treatment. There are three joints in each finger - the joint at the base of the finger, the joint in the middle of the finger, the joint closest to the fingertip. Arthritis can affect any of these three joints, it can affect a single joint on a single finger or several joints and fingers. It will cause various combinations of pain, deformity and loss of movement. This pain and loss of movement can have a serious impact on everyday life and make simple tasks such as making a cup of tea or writing very difficult. Arthritis is typically easy to diagnose based on the symptoms and the appearance of the finger. X-rays help to confirm the diagnosis. Arthritis pain is often noted for the first time after a minor knock or sprain which takes longer than expected to settle down. Before considering surgery painful finger joints may respond to painkillers applied as creams or taken by mouth. Pain killing injections (steroids) may be given directly into joints in clinic when you see a hand specialist at The McIndoe Centre or The Horder Centre. If pain persists despite the use of painkillers it may be time to think about an operation which offers long term pain relief in at least 90% of cases. The decision to get a finger joint replacement is largely down to the level of pain caused and how much this impacts on everyday life.

18

There are two types of operation which are helpful for arthritic fingers: Fusing the joint (arthrodesis) or joint replacement (arthroplasty). These are day case operations which can usually be done by ‘awake surgery’ using local anaesthetic. The artificial joint is made of silicon plastic is similar to a miniature artificial knee joint in appearance. Some patients will have more than one finger joint replacement in a single operation. A small incision is made in the finger and the damaged joint is removed. The artificial joint is inserted and cemented into place. It functions in the same way as a healthy joint, a bit like a hinge on a door, although, the movement is typically about half the range in a healthy joint. Alternatively, fusing the joint means that it is set in a fixed position and no further movement is possible. Both types of operation reliably remove the pain from arthritis but of course have different results regarding the freedom of movement in the hand. After surgery, some hand physiotherapy is necessary for several weeks and protective splints are often required during this period but typically these may be removed at times to do light activities as well as physiotherapy exercises. After about 8-10 weeks patients should be able to resume usual activities including golf, tennis and gardening, for example. Mr Oliver Harley is a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon specialising in both cosmetic and hand surgery. He has clinics at The Horder Centre in Crowborough (hands) and at The McIndoe Centre in East Grinstead. How Can An Osteopath Help Your Sporting Life?

Whether you are an athlete or cricketer drawing the season to a close, or a footballer or rugby player gearing up for the new season, how can an osteopath help make sure that you are match-fit and ready to go? Also, what can they do to help you post-match to make sure you feel a sense of wellbeing? By Jacob White

P

laying sport and doing regular exercise is good for your health, but sometimes sport can result in injuries caused by a fall or heavy blow, not warming up properly, using inappropriate equipment or poor technique or pushing yourself too hard. Almost any part of the body can be injured including the muscles, bones, joints and tissues such as tendons and ligaments. The most commonly affected areas vulnerable to both summer and winter sports injuries are the ankles and the knees. What Is Osteopathy And How Can Osteopaths Help? Osteopathy is a way of detecting, treating and preventing health problems by moving, stretching and massaging muscles and joints based on the principle that health and wellbeing is based on bones, muscles, ligaments and tissues working together. An osteopath’s aim is to: • Increase the mobility of joints • Relieve muscle tension • Enhance blood supply to tissue • Help the body heal An osteopath can help with: • Lower back pain • Neck pain • Shoulder pain • Arthritis • Problems with the pelvis, hips and legs

20

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

RH Uncovered

Does osteopathy work? Many patients argue that it does work and it is especially effective in treating persistent lower back pain and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends the treatment for those with the condition. Who can treat me in osteopathy? Osteopathy is not widely available on the NHS but your GP should be able to tell you whether it is available in your area but most patients pay for osteopathy treatment privately with treatment costs varying for different sessions. You do not need to be referred by your GP to see a private osteopath, a top tip is that most private health insurers provide cover for osteopathic treatment but do see your policy for more details. Importantly, when you are looking for an osteopath, only practitioners registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) are allowed to practise as osteopaths or call themselves osteopaths.

Breakthrough treatment for nerve pain Keith Atkinson, local Horsham therapist is offering a new method of pain relief called external neuromodulation. Labelled ‘a breakthrough for nerve pain relief ’, Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London did a clinical test and noted a ‘dramatic reduction in pain’. In 19 of 35 cases, the hospital reported a 100% improvement with pain reduced to zero. All these patients were suffering from chronic neuropathic pain.* “ I started having pain in my hip in July 2015; being 74 I thought perhaps I might eventually have a hip replacement. In August, whilst on holiday in Cornwall, I was woken with excruciating pain down my leg from the hip to the ankle. My ankle felt like it had a vice around it and painkillers did nothing to help. Fortunately I was able to see a local GP who after examination confirmed that I had a trapped sciatic nerve and prescribed Naproxen and Co-codamol. After my holiday, still experiencing agonising pain at night and not sleeping, I saw my own GP. He prescribed Amitriptyline and Co-codamol. A friend then recommended her Chiropractor who confirmed there was nothing sinister and agreed with the trapped nerve diagnosis. However, after 12 sessions working on my back I still had no relief from the leg pain. I returned to my GP in desperation and he told me to stop the Chiropractic treatment and referred me to a pain clinic, but there was a long waiting list! While waiting for this appointment to come through my daughter read an article in the AAH magazine about a young woman who had experienced exactly the same pain as I was having and had been taking the

22

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

same drugs. She had been recommended to see Keith Atkinson at Horsham Nerve Clinic and after three sessions she had been able to lead a pain free life. On reading this article myself I immediately made an appointment to see Keith. Within a few hours of my first appointment my pain was reduced and two days later I was pain free, although my back still felt a little stiff and sore. During my second appointment with Keith, he concentrated on my back and the relief was noticeable almost immediately. Two days after my second appointment I felt normal again. After 11 weeks of awful pain and horrible strong drugs, Keith had put me right and eradicated my pain in just two sessions! I cannot recommend him highly enough.” Judy Whittaker Steyning, West Sussex (November 2015) ‘The big advantage to external neuromodulation is that the treatment can give a very immediate effect. Treatment programs are on average three sessions but this is dependent on individual circumstances. Whilst Judy initially thought she may have a hip problem, it was classic sciatica with pain travelling down the nerve from the buttock to the ankle. It was pleasing to see how the treatment removed her pain and settled everything into place very quickly. I am often asked how long the treatment lasts. In the case of Judy, she remains pain free 19 months after treatment. If the nerve sits happily within the spinal space without been entrapped or inflamed then the person will remain pain free.

‘After 11 weeks of awful pain and horrible strong drugs, Keith had put me right’ Suggested Applications for upper body

• Shoulder and neck pain • Frozen shoulder • Facial Pain and TMJ • Bell’s Palsy • Tension headaches • Thoracic back pain • Repetitive Strain injury • Tennis / golfer’s elbow • Osteoarthritis and other joint pain • Sporting injuries • Post-operative pain • Phantom and Stump Pain (for amputees) • Complex Regional Pain syndrome • Other nerve related pain

What To Do If You Did Not Make The Grade The exams have been sat and the results are in. After weeks of exams, months of revision and years of studying the hard work is over but the tough choices about the future are only just beginning and those choices can become a lot tougher if you did not get the exam results you were hoping for but we a handy guide to what your next steps should be if your exam results are more “argh!” than A*. By Jacob White

F

or those who have just received their GCSE exam results and fallen short of expectations or the necessary grades needed to gain entry into a chosen school sixth form or further education college: Talk To Your Teachers About Re-marking If your grades are not what you expected and you think there is a mistake, speak to your teachers about re-marking. They can advise you on whether it is the right thing to do – you will need to make a re-marking request through your school. There is a charge for re-marking, this is refunded if your grades are changed, but remember your grades could go down as well as up. If you have requested that your exams are re-marked, some sixth forms and colleges might allow you to start your studies pending the outcome of your request – call them and explain the situation as soon as possible. Talk To Your Sixth Form Or College If you did not get the grades needed, they might still be able to accept you or they may offer you a place on a different course at their institution. They may also be in the position to recommend other local colleges elsewhere which have entry requirements that would suit your exam results better. Re-sit Your GCSEs While it might be difficult to come to terms with doing the work you have already completed, if you need certain grades to get the job or university place you want, your best option could be to re-sit your GCSEs. This does not have to mean re-doing them in school – you can take online GCSE courses that will allow you to fit them around work, A Levels, or other commitments.

There are online GCSE courses, but bear in mind some have strict deadlines just like at school. If you are planning on working or taking A Levels at the same time as studying for GCSEs, it is best to find a flexible course with no deadlines. This allows you to work at your own pace, making sure you will not get overwhelmed. Re-doing your exams will demonstrate dedication, and this can be beneficial in future applications. However, if you have a particular university or course in mind, you should check that they will accept re-sits, and if the entry requirements are higher when re-sits are involved. Look At Vocational Courses If you found your exams particularly difficult, it could be that an academic career is not for you. Think about taking a vocational or professional qualification which could suit you better - it will prepare you for work in a more practical way. There will be some hands-on learning as well as some time studying. There are vocational courses both online and available at colleges which offer accredited professional qualifications in fields including PR, accounting, marketing and management. Think About An Apprenticeship Rewarding and well-paid careers can come out of apprenticeships – they allow you to study for your qualification while gaining practical experience working in your chosen industry. Typically, you work four days and study one. Some require certain grades at GCSE, check which apprenticeships you are eligible for. For more information, visit: www.gov.uk/topic/ further-education-skills/apprenticeships

With many possibilities at your fingertips, missing out on your expected GCSE grades does not have to be a disaster. Whether you re-sit your exams to get back on track, or take a new route, you are bound to find something that suits you and your abilities, results day is the beginning of future you, not the end.

Smartphone Apps To Save You Money On Your Car Insurance

Ever get the feeling that you are being watched? If you have got a smartphone, you probably are! That is a conversation for another day, however, thanks to technology, younger drivers are now able to get apps on their phone to help reduce their insurance premiums.

T

he technology means you can get an app that will sit somewhere between Angry Birds and Snap Chat - other apps are available, that will monitor what you are up to behind the wheel and then, taking circumstances into consideration score your driving accordingly. Using GPS technology the Octo U app tracks the driver’s speed, braking, cornering and acceleration. While it is doing this, it keeps an eye on what

By Ben Morley

time of day it is and what the weather and traffic are like, and possibly even what you are listening to on the radio. After 100 hours of driving the app sends your score to your insurance company – the aim of the game, this is what it has become now, is to get a good score. Unlike a real driving game, you do not win by driving fast, the better you drive, the better the score is. A better score helps to reduce your insurance premiums, and Octo U reports that by using this app, drivers could save up to 30% on their annual car insurance premiums.

Quite a lot when you consider that the average under-25-yearold pays around ÂŁ1,700 for insurance. The app is free, however, it cannot tell if it is you or a friend driving, so if you have any mates that are bad drivers, leave your phone at home for that journey. Currently, only three UK insurers take data from the Octo U app, but it could still be worth considering when renewal time comes around for young drivers hitting the roads.

GARDENS

Designing A Child-Friendly Garden For children the summer holidays and the garden go hand-in-hand – a great place for smashing balls around, running about with the dog, or having friends round for fun and games. However, this can be at odds with the view of a garden to parents or grandparents, so, what can you do to help this? By Jacob White

F

or most families, the first area of priority is somewhere to relax, eat or entertain outside - a sitting area where you can put out garden furniture and set up the barbecue is the answer, screened off with a low hedge, or some heavy containers, filled with easy-going plants – herbs are a good choice. Most people make their seating area close to the house, usually right outside patio doors where it is convenient but when the back of the house is in shade for most of the day, it is often better to put the seating area further down the garden, where it catches the sun for the longest amount of time. Think about a dedicated play area which relieves the adult garden of a lot of wear and tear. If you are looking to mark out sports pitches or place climbing frames or a playhouse use a ground surface with hard-wearing rye-grass or bark chippings. A lock-up garden chest is a good idea for garden toys. To prevent balls, dogs or small children in neighbours’ gardens, plant banks of shrubs around boundaries. Choose hardy varieties such forsythia or philadelphus, avoiding prickly ones such as berberis or pyracantha. Other ideas include climbers such as honeysuckle or thornless blackberry. The adult area of the garden is where you can house the more delicate features such as perennial flowerbeds, container garden, raised flowerbeds, greenhouse or decorative vegetable patch. These are best safely separated from the places children play by a soft barrier that is ball and bike proof!

30

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

RH Uncovered

A row of fruit trees, a hedge or an ornamental tree and shrub border makes an attractive and at the same time, practical divider. Alternatively, use ornamental trellis with climbers. If limited for space, a row of woven hazel or heather panels with an arch through into your next area does the trick! A child-friendly garden does not have to remain the same, keep it under review. As the children grow older, you might like to replace the play area and introduce an area for them to find a quiet space for them to complete their homework or meet friends in a relaxed and safe environment.

Play It Safe!

A good place to position a play area is the far end of the garden, but depending on the age of the children you might like the area closer to keep an eye on them. Remember, for their safety to keep gates locked and check for hazards including poisonous plants or garden tools and chemicals. One of the biggest dangers is the much-loved garden pond, however shallow – a toddler can easily fall in.

HOMES

How To Create The Perfect Guest Room The summer holidays are here and the number of guests passing through the home is up, but just how do you create the perfect guest room? Here are some ideas to make your guest feel at home! By Jacob White

W

hether you are hosting friends, your mother-in-law or your parents are spending the summer holidays with you to help with childcare, or if it is your children returning home from university for the summer, what simple additions can you make to a spare room make sure it has a wow factor? Bags of Books One of the most enjoyable pastimes when visiting someone else’s home is rummaging through their book collection. Whether you have wall-shelving or a bookcase, stock with a variety of good quality reading that appeals to all tastes. Do not forget to add some bright bedside lamps or reading lights! Case Closed Add a fold-up luggage stand, this hotel-inspired touch saves guests from having to squat on the floor to rifle through their suitcases for items. Make sure it is accessible and ready at the foot of the bed. Accessorise Whether you put them in the bathroom or in the bedroom, little extras make guests feel special. Taking more inspiration from hotel visits - include toiletries and niceties in case of forgotten items such as mini toothpaste, an extra toothbrush, emery boards and small bottles of hand lotion.

36

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

Pillow Delight Some like them flat, some like them fluffy. Keep a range of pillows ready to satisfy guests’ individual tastes and do not forget to invest in tasteful blankets, you never know with the British weather! Get Hooked Your guests will not have a designated spot in your home to tuck away jumpers, purses and car keys. Make it easy for them by mounting hooks and wall racks on the backs of doors, or in easily accessible areas of their guest room. Remember to have plenty of coat hangers available for outdoor clothes. Say It With Flowers There is nothing as welcoming as freshly cut flowers, keep the arrangement simple though. Stick a few cut blooms from your garden in a jug for a fresh

and vibrant welcome but try to avoid flowers with overpowering scents that can lead to headaches. Do not forget about guests with allergies! Right On Time Ensure that guests do not miss a planned activity, or breakfast by placing a small clock in their room, whether just for them to keep time, or for them to set the alarm for an early morning wake-up call. Mirror, Mirror On The Wall… Hang a mirror, large or small in the room to provide the perfect spot for your guest to comb their hair, touch up makeup or put on jewellery. If space allows, a long dressing mirror is an even better addition for guests who have a sense of style and want to look tip-tip from head to toe this summer.

Do you do extensions? ‘Loft Property’…… We were feeling very pleased with ourselves when we came up with our name! We had been running a building company for years but thought we would look to make the most of the increasing interest in extending upwards. It can be tricky during telephone calls when we are often mistaken for somebody calling about lost property, however, it has generally been very successful.

Here is an example of one of our extensions, some nice before and after photographs, showing a great transformation. This is a double extension, built to create a larger kitchen/diner area and an additional upper bedroom and bathroom. The end result externally is very sympathetic to the original house. An oak porch was added to give character.

Despite our name, our work is a fairly even 50-50 split between lofts and extensions or renovations. Prospective clients so often ask us, “do you do extensions?”, that we thought we would take the opportunity to say to our lovely RH readers… …“yes we do!” . So……if you are interested in extending your property in any direction…. call us for a friendly informal no obligation chat…. Jennie Symes Director

Internally, the living space is transformed and there are now two good sized rooms on the ground floor to accommodate family life. We are in the process of building a new website and I can’t wait to show you the numerous before and after shots which showcase the fantastic and varied work our teams carry out.

We don’t have any problems recommending the RH Uncovered magazine to other local businesses because we find it so successful! Interior Blinds UK Ltd are local manufacturers, suppliers and installers of made to measure bespoke blinds and are based in Crawley Down (RH10). They started advertising in our first RH Uncovered magazine soon after we launched in 2006. They have since increased their campaigns and now appear in three magazines, so we met with Brian and asked why they chose our RH Uncovered magazine to start their campaign all those years ago and how it has worked for them... “We were looking for a magazine that was going to be distributed locally. The beauty of using RH Uncovered really comes down to the fact in is going into local homes and distributed by the Royal Mail, and has articles as well as advertising inside it.

By advertising regularly and consistently, we find we get a very good return for the investment of the advert! We started off with using one of the magazines and now we use three of them on a regular basis so we get a large distribution throughout the whole of the local area.

We have built up this beautiful working relationship between our staff and their staff, to the point that they let us know what articles they are running so we can tailor our adverts to suit. What we do find is that more often than not somebody will walk in clutching a copy of the RH Uncovered magazine, or once we have asked them how they have heard us we find out that they have seen our advert. We have built up this beautiful relationship between our staff and their staff, to the point that they let us know what articles they are running so we can tailor our adverts to suit.
