Well hello summer!

July’s here and brings some fantastic summer community events, read all about these family-friendly goings-on across the next few pages. As well as uncovering feel-good events, I’ve also been chatting to Horley Library about their summer reading challenge that promises to keep the kids busy over the school holidays and of course, our community section wouldn’t be complete without news from our man-in-the-know, Town Mayor, Richard Olliver. Have a great month and enjoy the sunshine! Your community feature writer, Shelley shelley@mantramagazines.co.uk, 01293 824 088

Skittles Tournament Set to be a key event in the local calendar, Charlwood’s Skittle Tournament returns on Saturday 19th on the village’s recreation ground. “Skittles, a traditional lawn game, has been played for centuries in rural villages throughout England so it is only fitting that it should be played in our medieval village,” organiser Penny Shoubridge says. “Charlwood Skittles Tournament is open to all - a fun event for all the family. Teams can be made up of friends, family groups, work colleagues, sports teams etc. “With a licensed bar and BBQ, this is a great opportunity to pit your 'skittling skills' against friends and family; an afternoon to be enjoyed by everyone.” Teams can register either beforehand by downloading a form from

www.charlwoodandhookwood.co.uk or on the Recreation Ground on the day from 3pm. Entry costs £18 per team of 6.

We’re now working on our August and September issues (August copy deadline is 4th July, while September’s is 1st August), so do get in touch as soon as possible with your news, events and Community Hero nominations! 4 - COMMUNITY PAGES

Town Mayor - Richard Olliver This month I want to talk about becoming a parish or town councillor. Do you want to make a difference locally? Why not consider becoming a parish councillor? Local councils are looking for people like you who have local knowledge and want to do something worthwhile for the local community.

Looking back, one can see the fruition of projects you have been involved in. Everyone moans about what is or is not happening locally, if you think you can do it better, prove it and become a town or parish councillor.

We have elections for parish councils in May 2015. Don’t leave it. Express an interest now to the clerk at your local It doesn’t matter what your background town or parish council. We need YOU! is. Richard Olliver, Town Mayor

To get an idea of what it was like to live in our area up until 250 years ago is not too difficult to imagine. For centuries there had been a large open area, referred to as Horley Heath.

Both those on foot and those on carts or coaches had to travel across a very boggy area which was not particularly easy, neither for foot passengers nor animal-drawn vehicles.

Once a good road could be built, and later a railway company succeeded in constructing its almost level routes, Reigate became a wealthy focus for both North-South and East-West journeys.

How the county boundary came to be defined is not easily answered. Hazelwick and Gatwick had connections with Washington, some miles to the south, and Charlwood, Burstow and Worth were mainly outlying lands of Merstham to the north.

In railway terms nowadays, Redhill has captured the most usage and Reigate has reduced its usage. Whether this is a good thing or not probably depends on where you live and how much you depend on the railways!

Local Routes in Horley

The roads which led southwards from London, heading for the South Coast, passed through Reigate and after the energy spent crossing the North Downs, the smaller ridges - such as that met with at Salfords - were not too difficult to manage.

What is known is that the east-west The road from Merstham which passes routes following the North Downs through Redhill en route to Crawley, was were for centuries well-used. not so well-used, when it was a local road.

Summer Reading

Community News

This summer, it’s estimated 750,000 children across the UK will take part in the annual Summer Reading Challenge which aims to encourage children to build their reading confidence and skills. Running at our local libraries from mid July - September, this year’s exciting theme ‘Mythical Maze’ hopes to get 4 – 11 year olds stuck in some good books for the long summer break. Taking on six borrowed library books in six weeks (from a wide range of genres), the challenge rewards all participants with a sticker for every book completed

6 - COMMUNITY PAGES

and a certificate for all children who finish their six books. Best of all, it’s FREE to do too. “Get down to your local library or visit www.surreycc.gov.uk/libraries and take part in our Summer Reading Challenge,” Horley librarian Jemma Cotterill says. “All children need to do is read six books of their choice over the summer holidays, collecting gifts and stickers along the way. For those that complete the challenge, you receive a certificate and medal!

The challenge, devised by the Reading Agency in 1999, has been proven to help children keep up their reading whilst away from the classroom for the summer, with a record number of children (over 800,000) taking part in last year’s successful summer read. To get involved, head down to your local library and sign up. The challenge is free for all to join and will certainly help to keep those cries of “ I’m bored” at bay!

Adults and teens we also have a scheme for you too, so pop in and see us!”

Lofty ideals Converting your loft can be the ideal way to gain extra space without the expense and hassle of moving house. Katherine Sorrell outlines the dos and don’ts.

Dark, pokey and inaccessible, lofts can often be, literally, a waste of space, useful for a bit of dusty, long-term storage and nothing else. Turn that space into one or two useful rooms and – ta da! – not only might you have added real value to your property, but you’ve got extra living space that could make all the difference to a happy family life.

You should have a proper lobby area when you come up the stairs, there should be sufficient head clearance, it should be properly insulated, you should have a dormer window rather than a Velux. It’s also important to think about how a loft conversion affects the house as a whole, as they can make them top heavy, with too many bedrooms and, in comparison, too few reception rooms.

The simplest loft conversion might just involve strengthening and boarding out the floor, adding a light and sticking in a pull-down loft ladder – giving you a good-sized storage area that’s accessible on a regular basis, at a cost of probably only a couple of thousand pounds. Bear in mind, however, that Building Regulations may apply to even a simple conversion – see more at www.planningportal.gov.uk. Such a basic project may be a good idea in practical, everyday terms, but if it’s added value you’re after, you’ll have to be more ambitious, say the experts, and put in at least one ‘real’ room.

Check out other properties nearby which have been similarly extended to see what has been done and what they’re worth.’ When doing your research, it’s always a good idea to ask a local estate agent for advice, and you could also go to a website such as www.nethouseprices.com to find out how much properties in your area have sold for recently.

‘It’s a false economy to cut corners,’ says Jeremy Leaf, RICS housing spokesperson (www.rics.org). ‘To maximise your return the conversion has to be designed properly from the very beginning. 14 - Homes

A word about space planning. If you have room, adding a bathroom to a loft conversion makes sense both practically and financially, and shouldn’t cost any more than adding a new bathroom anywhere else in the house – in other words, anything from around £3,000 for a plain fit-out. Costs will be minimised if you place the bathroom above one on the floor below, keeping plumbing work simple,

but Hugo Tugman of Architect Your Home (www.architect-yourhome.com) points out that you should always keep your options open. ‘It’s folly to put the bathroom in the wrong place, just because that’s where the drains are,’ he says. ‘The same goes for staircases – most people think that there’s just one place where a staircase can be fitted in a loft conversion, because Building Regulations require two metres of head room above it, but you can end up squashing your accommodation just because the best bit of loft is taken up with a staircase. It’s really worth considering the possible alternatives when doing your planning.’ And finally, if overall head height is an issue in your potential loft conversion, don’t try to get away with cramped, uncomfortable rooms. Hugo points out that lowering the ceilings of the rooms below is often a possibility, and can make all the difference to the success of a project. ‘It sounds like it would be a massive expense,’ he says, ‘but in fact the additional costs are really only plastering and decorating the rooms below, and it would probably add no more than about three or four thousand onto a simple job.’ By Katerine Sorrell To advertise call - 01293 824088

Dry Weather Gardening After all those weeks in early summer when it seemed unable to stop raining, many plants will have been lulled into a false sense of security. And those of us who look after the plants are also likely to have become a little too used to not worrying about what and how to water to best effect, and how to minimise the effects of dry weather. So if you’re now finding yourself battling with the effects of a more text-book summer, here are my tips for coping:

Mulching really does help to keep the moisture in the soil. It’s important to make sure the soil is really well watered BEFORE you apply the mulch, so water well or wait until after there has been a heavy rainfall. Then around the area, covering the roots of the plant (or preferably a bit further) shovel on well-rotted manure, composted bark or garden compost. Don’t forget that vegetables as well as flowers benefit from mulching.

On the whole, plants with silvery or densely hairy leaves are pretty drought tolerant, as are those whose names imply that they are of Mediterranean origin. Some of my favourite drought-resisters include: Convolvulus cneorum: stunning silvery leaves and miniature white flowers, often with a touch of pink, which resemble those of morning glories. A bit of temporary shading, perhaps in Rosemary: this shrub has great purple the form of some shade netting (available flowers and wonderfully aromatic foliage, A slow but steady supply of water is generally from garden centres) or some large, leafy perfect for cooking. more use and more appreciated by plants branches driven in to the soil, will help to than intermittent heavy drenching. Newly keep things a little cooler during the hotter Senecio maritima: a pretty divided leafed planted trees and shrubs establish better and weather. It may not look great, but it could plant with dense hair on the leaves making it suffer drought stress less if the soil is never save you a packet in replacing plants. look silvery. allowed to dry out completely. Installing Vegetable plants can be covered with netted Gazanias: with their large orange, brown and some perforated or permeable pipe beneath cloches (like the Giant Easy Net Tunnels burgundy flowers and silvered leaves, they look the soil surface or on the surface but beneath available from my website) to achieve the a treat in patio pots of summer borders. the mulch provides just what they need. same effect – and these will also help to keep Lavenders:aromatic leaves and perfumed blue, off many potential pests too. lilac purple or white flower spikes, this cottage If you’re making any new plantings for the patio right now, don’t risk them becoming drought Siphoning water out from the bath is a great garden favourite is also a magnet for bees. stressed before their moment of autumn or way to re-use domestic water. The usual tiny Geraniums and their cousins, Pelargoniums, are winter glory comes. 24 - Children and Education

Less will be lost by evaporation and there will also be less likelihood of plants suffering scorching. However much you’ve taken a fancy to a gorgeous looking plant in your local garden centre, don’t buy it right now. In hot, dry conditions it is much harder for a plant to become established and much more likely that it’ll suffer stress.

If you’re planning on sending your children to enjoy organised outdoor activities over the summer holidays, thanks to an initiative from local charity Myfanwy Townsend Melanoma Research Fund, they are more likely to stay sun safe. The East Grinstead-based charity devised and funded www.oksunsafetycode.com a free online resource to promote sun safety for those that work outside with children, after discovering that 80% of lifetime sun exposure occurs during childhood and one bout of blistering sunburn can double the risk of developing melanoma later on in life.

Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code

“Clubs and individuals will be required to follow a code to gain an official accreditation mark; verifying that specific sun protection measures have been met. A downloadable toolkit provides promotional materials, designed to keep guidelines active and ensure that good practice is supported by parents.”

“Whilst nothing is better than the great outdoors, we want to ensure kids understand the importance of staying safe in the sun” says the charity’s founder, Harry Townsend; “targeting attitudes and behaviour at “So far, the support has been a young age, especially phenomenal,” Michelle Baker through respected coaches, from Myfanwy Townsend teachers, instructors and Melanoma Research Fund explains, “with a raft of national leaders, will encourage governing bodies of sport and good habits which will last outdoor groups agreeing to back a lifetime. We are delighted the initiative, including The Pony that so many organisations want to be part of this Club, The Scouts Association important legacy.” and England Athletics.”

“I am a lover of the outdoors but also aware of the harmful effects of the sun; so I am delighted to be part of the creation of the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code. We owe it to all children to do our best to make sure they are safe in the sun.” For further information on the sun safety code and to check if your child’s activities are accredited visit: www.oksunsafetycode.com.

The Bully Inside

I have met many individuals Have you ever considered yourself a bully? Most will not. in positions of authority whose inner bully prevented them from admitting Let me put that question weakness and seeking help. another way. Have you ever Some of these were Directors talked yourself out of being of companies, high level able to do a particular thing, telling yourself you’re not good sporting professionals as well as the young school kids enough, that you're never working through exams. going to be that good? Would you stand by and watch someone else put a friend or family member down? I suspect your answer would be no! In the first year of setting up my business I would probably have to admit I sabotaged myself. I spent the year telling myself I wasn’t going to succeed and to just enjoy the experience for as long as it lasted. Now luckily I realised what I was doing and took steps to prevent it stopping me from achieving my goals.

32 - HEALTH AND BEAUTY

My internal voice stopped me from having the confidence to stand and up talk to people. I’m not just talking about on stage but to my potential clients. I lucky enough was able to spot the signs and symptoms with some help from friends. Now there really is no stopping me.

The internal bully does not distinguish between young, old, professional or school child. What I have found when speaking to individuals is that they feel like the only one in their situation and that nobody else can help.

There are no limits this year. I’m involved in raising money by driving a car around for some fantastic charities. Have a look at where taming those bullies led me www.lemons365.co.uk/ the-drivers/becky-wells/

What therapists, coaches and other wellness specialists can do is to help you take control back of that bullying dialogue.

I challenge you to show your bully the front door. Even if it means knocking on one of our doors for the initial help.

Let me just ask you another question? How would you feel if those controlling thoughts weren’t there?
