With Valentine’s Day around the corner, it is more than just coincidence that we are continuing with our wedding theme from last month.

Community News mobility to keep in touch and become more involved with their local community. streetlife.com launched in Surrey in September, and hundreds of local people, including residents, community groups, councillors and businesses, have taken to the local social network to discuss the issues that matter in their communities.

Surrey’s New Social Neighbourhood Network streetlife.com, the local social network, has a simple aim: to help people make the most of where they live by connecting with their neighbours.

Hello again to you all This time I want to tell you about how you can meet and talk to your local Councillor.

We have regular “Meet your Councillor” sessions in various locations on certain Saturday mornings. These are advertised on the Council notice boards in the town and on our web site (www.horleysurrey-tc.gov.uk). Please have a look at our website this has recently been extensively redesigned and updated so that local information is available quickly and easily.

If you have any suggestions for further improvement or wish to advertise a local event, please contact the Town Clerk.

On our “Meet your Councillor” sessions, anyone can come along, without an appointment to have a chat with a Town Councillor. Borough and County Councillors are also sometimes available.

We do take notice of what is said at these sessions and either deal with it within the Town Council or pass it on to the appropriate Borough or County Council member or department. We also try to get back to residents who bring up a problem to let them know how things are progressing.

In addition you can contact individual Councillors through contact details on the website or in the Town Guide. I would recommend email as a good way to give your views because even if the appropriate Councillor is not easily available, he or she can pick it up when they next go on their computer or other device and photos can be included.

Community News

The Horley - Balcombe Turnpike 1809 The two choices of roads to the South which face drivers entering Horley by way of the A23, at the Chequers, might both appear on the face of it to have had Roman origins.

Balcombe Road is on the whole straight for a very long way. The two exceptions are, firstly, the kinks between the turn offs to Copthorne and Tinsley Lane - which may have an origin in the fact that this was by a county boundary and, secondly, the dip where the road snakes down across the modern route of the M25 and up the other side.

In fact, for centuries anyone who wanted to get to Balcombe by going south along the Balcombe Road would turn left at Pound Hill and take a short distance along the road

eastwards before resuming the southern route along Church Road and down the steep hill from Worth.

Since it is generally agreed that Worth Church pre-dates the Norman Conquest we cannot be too sure which particular paths came first!

What we do know is that the Balcombe Road, through the forest to Brighton, became a Turnpike Road by an Act of 1809, from the Brighton Road at the Chequers, through Worth, Balcombe and on to Whitemans Green at Cuckfield, where it rejoined an older Turnpike route. In Surrey, the course of a continuous road over Horley Common does not appear at all on Rocque’s map of 1745.

There are only winding tracks, that do not form a through route. This implies that present long stretches of straight road are of a turnpike origin.

As a final note, we know that the present Balcombe Road south of Worth Church had a new route for some of the journey through Worth Forest.

An article published in the “Sussex Notes and Queries” in 1949 noted that as a result of the 1809 Act a new road (now part of the present road) was actually laid out about 150 yards to the west of an older road which you can still trace for the most part as a ride in Worth Forest.

She commented: “Girls joining Year 7 in 2014 will enter the job market in 2024 and retire in 2077 at least. We can only prepare pupils for a world we don’t yet know, for jobs which do not yet exist, using technologies not yet invented, solving problems we can’t begin to imagine, by giving them the transferable thinking and interpersonal skills that extend beyond paper qualifications.

“To achieve this, we have a unique programme based around our changing economy - whether it be creative, financial or industrial.

All our girls will go on to be involved in some sort of business in their future lives and we believe it is important to prepare them for this.”

The ground-breaking course has been designed by Nicola Wintle, who heads A’ Level Business and Economics teaching at the school.

Of course, we can’t all start from scratch when redesigning our lighting, so if you’re looking for a quick upgrade on a budget, you could just spend a few pounds replacing main light switches with dimmers, and plug in a selection of table or floor lamps at strategic points, enabling you to layer the lighting and emphasise special features.

With these fundamentals in mind, forward planning and creative thinking are the keys to designing a lighting scheme.

Think of it as painting with light, creating washes and filling in with highlights and lowlights. Each room is your blank canvas, but with imagination and a little effort it can become a work of art.

Winter Perfume Plants The winter months can be a little lacklustre in the garden, sometimes even a bit gloomy.

However carefully you plant your flowerbeds and borders, the number of brightly coloured plants for winter performance is rather limited. But one of the most important ingredients in a winter garden is perfume – it’s certainly something which can transform my mood in an instant. So think scent, as there are a few really brilliant winter perfume plants and there’s a good chance that they’ll be readily available in garden centres and nurseries right now.

The Witch Hazels or Hamamelis are one of my favourite winter flowerers.

With their unusual oriental-looking yellow, orange or bronzy-red spidery flowers on bare branches they look stunning. But of course looks are not everything and the perfume of the witch hazels is what really makes them such an asset - sweet, spicy and wonderfully good at wafting around the garden. Various colours are available, in shades of brightest orange through to rich burgundy.

Wintersweet or Chimonanthus is another recommendation. The branches are covered with creamy to yellow coloured multipetalled flowers with a seriously sweet perfume. Like the witch hazel it’s quite slow growing and doesn’t need a huge amount of space. This means it’s a perfect choice for the smaller garden, but make sure you consider carefully where to plant it, so that you can enjoy every aspect of its display.

If you like a bit of variegated foliage then try the Daphne odora ‘Aureomarginata’, which has classic purplepink clusters of flowers, a very strong perfume and leaves which are typically green and leathery but with a bright yellow leaf margin. It can be a little temperamental,but after its first year a Daphne generally settles in well and you won’t regret buying it.

Mahonias with their holly-like leaves can be a trifle spiky but when they are in flower their brightest yellow spikes are really eyecatching and Mahonia japonica produces one of the sweetest perfumes you could wish for right from the middle of winter to early spring. If you prefer one with more upright flowers, go for Mahonia x media ‘Charity’. Mahonias are good in part shade or full sun.

And finally, don’t forget the Sarcococcas or winter box. With their small, pretty but inconspicuous flowers they may not instantly leap out and draw attention to themselves, but the perfume of those tiny flowers is tremendous and really strong, making them a great winter flowering shrub that I’d recommend you try.

The Viburnums may be a shrub you think of as a summer flowering plant, but go for varieties such as Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ and the bright pink, trumpet-shaped flowers not only look good but also provide your garden with a sumptuous perfume. Planted in a
