Hello and Welcome to our October issue You may have noticed that in recent months our community content has grown considerably – this is partly because more and more community groups have approached us to feature them, but also there have been so many new community groups being formed in the local area which is fantastic news! Many of these groups support families in times of need, or provide a respite for people caring for others with illness or disabilities.

So we talked to Community Matters a charity organisation that supports of 300 grassroots community groups across Sussex and Surrey and more than 1000 groups in the South East to gather some top tips for anyone wanting to start a new community group.

Becky Wells, our Health guru also gives some great advice on stopping smoking during “Stoptober” and with the new law regarding not smoking in cars when children are in them coming into effect on 1st October, this is certainly a timely reminder.

As always we have lots of community news, What’s on events and of course our other regular columns this month.

Can You take on the Aquathlon?

R

eturning for the second time this year (due to popular demand) East Grinstead’s Triathlon Club will be holding an invigorating Aquathlon, guaranteed to be a fun challenge for all of you fitness fanatics!

On Sunday 25th October, participants will swim 500m and then run 5KM around the town, for the ultimate test of multi-sport skill.

We caught up with the group’s Pete Holley to find out all you need to know about this exciting event and hear a few motivational quotes to take it on!

Can anyone take part or do you have to be physically fit?

The event consists of 20 laps of The Kings Centre pool followed by a 5 km run and we have a whole range of abilities taking part.

The beauty of the event is that everyone can take part together, making it very inclusive.

We assume that anyone entering will be able to swim the 20 lengths using either crawl or breast stroke and can travel around the 5km run (3 miles) we always wait for the last person to arrive at the finish regardless of how long it takes.

As long as people come with a sense of humour and enthusiasm they will be welcome, for some it was their first taste of multi-sport and they have gone on to compete in triathlons. For others it was the culmination of a new year’s resolution, but for everyone it’s for the fun. Ability doesn’t matter, it’s the taking part that counts for us Which seems to challenge most participants most - the 20 laps or the 5km?

Most first timers actually find the transition between the run and the swim the hardest as this is the bit they probably have not experienced. The feeling of “jelly legs” when starting to run after swimming can be quite disconcerting the first time!

And finally, do you have any inspirational words to encourage us and our readers to take part?

The first step is always the hardest: entering an event is much, much harder than the training!

It isn’t a race against others it’s a completion with yourself to be the best you can… and you are always going to beat the people sitting on the couch!

Local Global: Bringing the Community Together

O

n Saturday 24th October, East Grinstead’s Jubilee Centre will see a variety of community groups take part in an exciting Local Global event.

This will be the fifth Local Global meet-up and the first time that so many diverse groups, such as; the Filipino-British Association of East Grinstead, Hispanic Belly Dancing Group and East Grinstead Folk Dance Club, as well as so many more, will come together in the town, for an event that has previously seen up to five hundred people, of all cultures and backgrounds, get involved.

“Local Global aims to bring the diverse community of Mid Sussex together,” Johana Manalus, Chairman of the Mid Sussex Diversity Forum who organises the event explains. “Different cultures and experiences offer a lot of interest and teaching, and knowing about them gives us inspiration to build a better world for all of us.

“In this event we also believe we can help people learn about other cultures, adapt to new ones, while also maintaining their own traditions.”

This year, Local Global will be celebrating One World Week, bringing our diverse and colourful community groups together, to enjoy traditional dances, entertainment and delicious food from throughout the world. There’s even the chance to learn how to make a mouthwatering meal from simple, staple ingredients!

“Each one of us is unique, which makes us interesting to each other,” Johana continues.

“We always have something to share and something to learn. Let us be one as we explore our differences, and together inspire a culture of hope to build a more equal and peaceful world…

There is unity in diversity.”

Local Global will take place at Jubilee Community Centre, Charlwoods Road between 2-5pm on Saturday 24th October and is FREE to attend!

Girl Guide Volunteers Honoured

R

ecently, local Guiding volunteers were honoured in an awards ceremony, celebrating long-standing service to the community.

All local Rainbow, Brownie and Girl Guide leaders, assistants and helpers spare their time for free, each week to continue these vital groups for young girls – which have a community focus, at its core.

Five year awards were presented to assistant leaders; Katie Riley (1st East Grinstead Rainbows) and Helena Whibley, from the 4th East Grinstead Guides, while ten years of service was celebrated by the 2nd East Grinstead Rainbows’ helper, Janine Taylor.

Louise Tucker, leader of the St Johns Brownies, Rainbows and Guides, Jo Lee (a helper at 1st EG Guides) and July Roxburg, an assistant leader with the 6th East Grinstead Brownies, all received awards for over twenty years of dedicated service! Well done ladies!

“All those awarded give up their time to volunteer each week, during term time, so that girls aged five years upwards can have fun and learn new skills,” Janet Templeman, East Grinstead Guides Division Commissioner, tells us. “Girlguiding offers many opportunities to all of the girls. I am not sure parents realise that we don’t get paid and it is a big commitment on behalf of our volunteers!”

As well as awards for those that already lead groups, girls aged 14-16, who would like to become leaders when they turn eighteen, also received recognition with a Young Leaders Qualification.

Young Leaders; Charlotte Hawksworth (7th EG Rainbows), Charlotte O’Neill (3rd EG Brownies) and Sophie Allen (6th EG Guides) were all presented with their qualifications by County Commissioner Deborah Phillips.

The ceremony was a real celebration, as not only were all of these fantastic volunteers and young leaders commended for their hard work, but also five of our guides (Amelia Thomas, Antonia Major and Hannah Ridges, all from the 4th East Grinstead Guides and Katie Allen and Jenny Thompson, from 6th East Grinstead Guides) obtained the highest award you can possibly receive as a Girl Guide – the prestigious Baden-Powell.

rees are beginning to change into their Autumnal colours and at this special time of year we are lucky to be surrounded by beautiful countryside where we can take advantage of nature’s magical spectacle.

The Great Gardens of Sussex; High Beeches, Borde Hill and Sheffield Park are particularly impressive now and a walk around will be a real treat for the senses. However, If sitting back and letting the countryside come to you is more your style, take a trip in the Bluebell Railway’s 1913 built Observation car during their Autumn tint Specials on weekdays during October.

Booking is essential. The Giants of Steam also take centre stage this month so it will be a busy time on the tracks this month.

Collectors of Coins, postcards, stamps and ephemera should head to the Mid week collectors Fair at the Chequer Mead Community Arts Centre Weds 21st October. While there, Check out the program at the theatre. There is a very impressive line-up of performances booked to entertain you, truly something for everyone and don’t forget to book for the Panto. It will be a fantastic show. Oh no it won’t..OH YES IT WILL! Singing Success: East Grinstead Choral Society

F

ounded in 1952, East Grinstead’s Choral Society has gone from strength to strength, regularly performing seasonal concerts and boasting a varied social calendar for its 80+ local members.

The society aims to give residents the opportunity to learn and perform a variety of works from the choral repertoire, led by a professional music director and accompanist, and joined by professional musicians and soloists at concerts – with such high concert standards, this also means that those living locally, no longer need to venture far to hear this type of music performed!

Over the next few months, the professional group are gearing up for both their Autumn (Sunday 15 November, from 6pm, at St. Mary’s Church, East Grinstead) and Christmas (Saturday 12 December, venue still to be confirmed) concerts, which they hope residents will attend and enjoy: “Our Autumn Concert will be lovely,” Isabella Barton from East Grinstead Choral Society, says. “They’ll be serene and beautiful sacred music, scored for choir and organ, performed in St Mary’s Church, East Grinstead, which has a warm yet peaceful atmosphere perfectly suited to the music we’ll be singing. It’ll be a time to enjoy some calm on a late autumn evening before the season gives way to Christmas madness!”

Speaking of Christmas, the group’s festive soiree, will see both the choir and audience singing all-time favourite carols – so make sure you go along and join in!

As Isabelle, who joined the group eight years ago, when she and her partner moved to East Grinstead, explains, everyone is welcome!

t is common knowledge that dying without a Will usually causes problems for those who are left to sort things out at an already very upsetting time.

Top Tips for Starting a Community Group W

e are lucky to have a thriving community, made up by many great groups who aim to support, advise and connect like-minded residents with regular meetings and fun events.

If you’re yet to find a community group that you would like to join, why not start up your very own? As we UNcovered, it is easier than you may think…

“Community groups serve many purposes, but perhaps the most important is that they can become the hub of the community it serves by providing services, activities, social events, a place to meet socially or to discuss issues of concern. A place to hold mother and baby sessions, a lunch club for older people, indoor and outdoor sports or club nights for young people, yoga, pilates, judo, dance, film club, can all happen here,” Graham Willmington, chief executive of Community Matters – a charity organisation that supports over 300 grassroots community groups across Sussex and Surrey, and more than 1000 in the South East, explains.

So, just what do you need to start your local group? We asked Graham to share his top tips: 1. If you are starting a new group you need a reason or a cause to bring people together – it could be to save the local park or playing fields, to bring a building into community owner-ship to serve as a local facility, to start an activity.

2. If you just feel that there is the lack of community coming together you need to know what people want or it won’t get off the ground – carry out a survey in the high street or local shopping centre to find out.

3. You need a place to meet – somebody’s home is fine for a core group to get things started, but a community organisation needs to be open to the community and to hold your meet-ings in a place where you can advertise the time and activity or agenda such as a community centre, village hall or sports pavilion.

4. Be inclusive – the spirit of a community group is that it is open to all in the catchment area, not a private club. And don’t let a strong personality rule the roost!

5. Talk to your local councillors, talk to the local press, use social media, set up a website – it isn’t expensive to do. Make sure people know you are there.

6. Join Community Matters – you can get an enormous amount of free help for a very small annual membership fee!

Steven Kirupai from East Grinstead Meridian Rotary Club also offered some great advice for other groups starting up, including giving everyone a role and why communication is key: “Help everyone to feel part of the group by giving them a role - even if it’s as a support to another member or something they only do occasionally (helping at events),” Steven suggest. “Ensure there is delegation of roles - one or two people doing everything is not a ‘group’!”

“Everyone needs to know and understand the aims and ambitions of the group. If there are certain things that happen at meetings or during the year of the group at particular times, make sure all are aware of these and what is expected.

The most important thing is communication. No one wants to feel excluded,” the local resident continues.

“Finally - listen to ideas. You might have tried things before and ‘it didn’t work’ but times change and enthusiasm from a new member can sometimes make a difference to success!”

his year marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, a work filled with magic and wit that continues to entrance audiences of all ages!

Now in its fourth year, the AMF (under the Directorship of Reinoud Ford, professional cellist who grew up in the area) is staging a phenomenal FIVE concerts over THREE days! The Festival runs from Friday 6th November to Sunday 8th November and TWO of the concerts will be dedicated to celebrating Carroll’s children’s classic!

The large-scale work (for adults) will form part of a special Cellophony-focused concert on Saturday 7th November at 2.30pm in the Christian Community Church, Forest Row. Local renowned narrator Ashley Ramsden will cover the entire Alice in Wonderland story (necessarily abridged) through nine mini movements, with the cellos performing a dual role as musical commentators and as stand-alone stars. This Alice will delight both committed and casual concert goers alike (spot the recurring A-C-E chord sequence in the Prologue derived from the musical letters in Alice’s name, or the skittish White Rabbit motif in the “down the rabbit hole” movement). The fourth movement (Pool of Creatures) reimagines Carroll’s eclectic animals falling into the pool of tears by blending echoes of famous animal-related themes: listen out for The Trout, The Cat, The Swan, The Bat and more thanks to Schubert, Prokofiev, Saint-Saens, Strauss and others for their inspired contributions!

Birchall’s Alice in Wonderland Children’s Workshop will take place on Saturday 7th November at 11am in the Christian Community Church, Forest Row. Written for children aged 5-10, a narrator and the cello ensemble will envelop the young audience in the musical world of Wonderland.

The Workshop will give children a real sense of the Alice story, while also allowing them to participate in songs and words and exposing them to many aspects of the cello as musical instrument. Birchall has made his musical language accessible to young people by linking Carroll’s Wonderland characters to recognisable melodies and enlivening memorable scenes with fun and engaging sounds and effects.

One of the greatest strengths of Carroll’s text is its universal appeal to readers of all ages.

The Ashdown Music Festival’s double dose of Alice-inspired concerts will be sure to cater to concert-goers both young and old!

Over the last year alone, 49,000 young people took up apprenticeships in the South East, according to the National Apprenticeship Scheme. Clearly a popular option for school and Sixth Form leavers alike, apprenticeships offer on-the-job training whilst receiving a small wage. This earning-while-learning mindset, has undoubtedly proved successful, with many schools, including Oriel High School in Crawley, seeing pupils opt for a placement: “Apprenticeships are becoming a more popular option with young people leaving Oriel after their GCSEs or A levels,” Ryan Sallows, business manager for the school, explains.

“Apprenticeships are becoming an attractive alternative to university for Sixth Form leavers, in particular. We have had students go onto very successful apprenticeships in engineering, accountancy and horticulture, for example.

Young people like the ‘earn while you learn’ ethos of apprenticeships.”

While apprenticeships have become a great option for those wanting to get stuck into a practical career, straight from school, there are still record numbers of pupils hoping to go to college and then on to university.

This year saw over 400,000 young people be accepted onto university courses, through-out the UK – a rise by 3% compared to 2014.

Recently, a government report on The Impact of Further Education Learning found that almost a third of students who participated in further education courses, gained better employment than those who didn’t. The same report also found that 58% of people who completed their course, had high job satisfaction, while 80% said that further education had improved their self-confidence.

Using pattern to perfection From the subtlest of stripes to the boldest of modern floral prints, pattern offers infinite choices to suit any space.

P

attern, like colour, can be a wonderful addition to a home, providing character and vitality, from an complex scheme, to simple touches such as a wallpapered wall or a set of cushions. Pattern can create a focal point, for example by recovering a chair; or subtle interest through a few simple pieces featuring understated designs. Or it can be an entire room, a complex combination of patterned walls, rugs, fabrics and accessories.

Using pattern is not actually as complex as it may seem. It’s best to start by working out your preference. Simple, graphic motifs in muted colours or naturalistic designs in vivid shades? Large scale or small?

Historical prints or modern?

And would you like just a dash of pattern to enliven an otherwise plain room, or a striking combination of patterns for an all-over look? You may own the perfect inspiration already: an antique quilt, a painted vase, a print from an old book or a favourite shirt, perhaps. Borrow ideas from magazines and books, other people’s homes, or even from fashionable bars and restaurants. Wherever you find your patterned fabric, however, try to obtain large samples and, before spending a great deal of money, hang them in place to gain a really good idea of their final effect.

There’s no denying that it’s easier to go down the simple route with pattern, and limit it to appearing in just one or two places.

But combining a variety of patterns, though harder to get right, can be tremendously exciting and full of impact. Whatever items you’re putting together, there are some guidelines that will help make the best of them.

First: colours. When mixing pattern with pattern or, indeed, pattern with plain, a really good colour match is important. This will hang the whole effect together. Stand back and assess which colours are most visible in your patterns, then aim to combine one main colour with two or three highlights.

Second: scale. In bigger rooms, you can afford to use very large-scale patterns, while smaller rooms are generally better suited to medium- or small-scale patterns When combining patterns, aim to vary their scales – to avoid monotony – without going to dramatic changes of size which tend to look strange. Remember very small patterns are only really noticeable close up; from a distance they look like a plain colour.

Third: density. Loose, open patterns give a visual ‘breather’, while intricate patterns with closely placed designs have more drama. As with scale, a variety of densities gives balance and interest.

Fourth: design. Abstract, figurative, retro, traditional, modern – you name it, there’s something for everyone. Avoid an incongruous mix by limiting your pattern combinations to designs that originate from the same era or stylistic aesthetic. Remember that plains and stripes are brilliant at co-ordinating with more intricate patterns.

And finally: cheat! If you love the idea of pattern but are really stuck, check out manufacturers’ wallpaper and fabric pattern books, which show you how to mix and match with ease. Keep experimenting and persevere.

Success with pattern is simply a case of trial and error, putting different things together and changing them around until you’re totally happy with the results – a coherent, confident look that has great pattern panache.

limbing plants, especially those with flamboyant flowers or fantastic foliage can transform a garden and offer a whole new planting opportunity, as your garden literally goes upwards and takes a vertical climb.

Supporting Cast A few climbers are self-clingers and don’t need a special support system when grown against a fence or wall; Virginia creeper and Hydrangea petiolaris for instance. But most need to have a proper support, and it pays to put this in place before you plant. For lighter weight climbers some trellis, perhaps prettily painted will do the trick, but for heavier climbers such as a vigorous clematis, or wisteria, you will need galvanised straining wires.

Easy Access If you use trellis as a support on a wall, it can be attached to wooden battens which are fixed to the wall using rawl plugs. Use a series of hinges to attach one edge of the trellis to the batten, and a few hooks to allow you to raise or lower the trellis for when you need to maintain the wall.

Planting Distance Climbers won’t thrive if they don’t receive enough water at the base. The ‘rain shadow’ created by the house roof and the drying effect of the wall’s foundations can make the soil close-by extremely dry so plant a minimum of 45cm (18in) away from the base of the wall and fork in plenty of well-rotted bulky organic matter before planting too.

Extra Care Climbers planted against a wall will need extra TLC if they’re to look their best. Make watering them top-priority, especially for the first 18 months whilst they’re becoming established. Apply a good, bulky organic mulch to a depth of about 8cm (3in) or so all around the rooting area, but take care to avoid the mulch coming in to direct contact with the stems.

Arches, Arbours and Pergolas Climbers don’t just look good on house, garden and garage walls and fences, they can also be used to great effect over arches and pergolas or to clothe an arbour. You may need to install some supporting wires here too, so go for galvanised wires and sturdy vine-eyes as fixings.

Choosing a scented climber or two will add to the charm of a cosy arbour or archway.

Clever Combinations If the surface that you want to plant up is big enough, try to use climbers that flower in different seasons as, chosen carefully, the plants you use will increase the period for which the arch, pergola, arbour, wall or fence, looks its best.

Bare Ankles Many climbers do have a habit of becoming a bit bare at the base, especially after they’ve been in place for a few years. Try some seasonal bedding plants around the base, or plant a small and attractive shrub a little further away to hide the bare stems.

Train it well If the climber is quite small, it may need to be trained in the right direction. A short bamboo cane or several for a multi-stemmed plant, can be angled from the base of the plant to the vertical surface, allowing you to tie in the stems and edge them towards the support. Once the climber has reached the wall, the enlarging network of stems may become congested if left to its own devices, so actively train the stems to grow in the direction you need them to.
