Eggciting Spring Events It’s the real big start to the spring with the Easter holidays kicking off the month, and there will be lots of special events as all the local tourist attractions unveil what’s new for this year. At our National Trust property of Standen, there’s a programme of holiday family fun on selected days, and a Cadbury’s Easter Egg trail over the Easter weekend.

Also for garden lovers , there’s a chance Simon Kerr, to come and admire the colourful spectacle Town Promotions of 10,000 blooming tulips as they carpet Manager the terraces and borders. I’ll be there counting them!

All services will serve the Bluebell station at East Grinstead, so really handy for us here.

The giant Deltic Diesel locomotives will also be rolling in to Bluebell Railway Hopefully the weather will be fair for us and on the 18th and 19th of April. we’ll all get out there and enjoy ourselves.

All Aboard: Vintage Bus Day Returns Waiting for a bus can annoying can’t it?

Especially when three turn up at once…

However, for those of you who have been waiting almost a year for the return of the annual Vintage Bus Running Day; we’ve got some good news for you – the collection of classic buses will be returning to East Grinstead on Sunday 12th April!

The town’s historic High Street will once again be filled with an array of vintage buses– all giving FREE rides to surrounding villages.

Driven by their loving owners, the restored vehicles will be transporting residents back to the local routes of yesteryear and is a firm favourite day out for all ages alike.

Rotary Club to give Children a Day to Remember!

Now in its 25th year, the Kids Out event aims to give disadvantaged children a fun day out that they’ll hopefully remember forever. It’s estimated that 25,000 children across the UK will enjoy an annual Kids Out day.

We can all look back on happy sunny days from our childhoods, filled with love and laughter, but do you have that one day that you remember the most?

Perhaps you can vividly reminisce about a day spent playing outdoors, or a family trip to the seaside, or even a trip to a theme park – whatever your fondest childhood memory, our local Rotary clubs are teaming up to give schoolchildren the same unforgettable day out experience!

This year, the Rotary clubs of East Grinstead Meridian, Crawley and Storrington are once again joining forces to take 100 children from Crawley’s Manor Green School to Chessington World of Adventures on Wednesday 10th June.

The clubs have fundraised (and are still fundraising!) to give the schoolchildren a completely cost- free day out; including transport, entry to the theme park, a packed lunch and t-shirts and hats to take home as a memorable keepsake.

However, volunteers are still required, so if you can lend a hand on the day – don’t hesitate to get in touch with the East Grinstead Meridian Rotary Club!

Taking the Plunge for Charity

Dig out those swimming costumes, grab those goggles and make a splash in this year’s Swimathon, taking place at East Grinstead’s Kings Centre on Saturday 18th April.

and is supported by the England team’s 2014 Commonwealth Games coach Jolyon Finck, Olympic Gold medallist (and Swimathon President) Duncan Goodhew and TV presenter, Linda Barker.

Swimmers of all aged and abilities will take on either distances of 1.5K, 2.5K or 5K in sessions throughout the weekend – all going that extra length for a good cause.

Founded in 1986, Swimathon is the world’s biggest fundraising swim and has raised over £40 million for charities, so far, including; Comic Relief, Macmillan Cancer Support, NSPCC, The British Heart Foundation and The Prince’s Trust.

“We’re looking for swimmers who are up to the challenge to help make this the biggest and best Swimathon yet,” Marie Curie Community Fundraiser Fiona Dodd says. “In previous years, lots of swimmers have taken part in East Grinstead and combined with other pools in Sussex raised a brilliant £82,465.15 for Marie Curie – a really fantastic achievement that we hope to smash this year!”

“Swimathon provides motivation and a personal challenge to swimmers nationwide,” Duncan Goodhew explains.

This year’s event will be raising funds for Marie Curie, which every year cares for 40,000 people facing terminal illnesses

Fundraising with Flowers Now in it’s 9th year, the popular St Mary’s Plant Sale will be back again this month, raising further funds for the church’s restoration projects.

Originally devised in 1983 to provide transport for elderly and disabled residents, the great group have now bought their fifth vehicle (costing £3,000 each year to run) and enable clubs and organisations such as the Derby & Joan Club and our local Scouts group to get about – so grab your trusty team and head to the Victoria Sports & Social Club, from 7:30pm, to help keep this marvellous community minibus running!

Grow Your Own Veg As the new gardening year is upon us, why not have a go at growing your own veg because it doesn’t need to be difficult and has the potential to be one of the most productive and fun things you’ve ever done.

Home grown food tastes better, uses little if any air miles, can save you a packet and is enormously rewarding because you’re getting the top end of the market produce.

Getting A Grip The tyres on your car are the only points of contact between you and the roads that you drive on. Those four small patches of rubber have got plenty to deal with too. Safety in accelerating, braking, steering and cornering all depend on those four footprints. So it goes without saying that it’s important to make sure that your tyres are in good condition at all times.

The first, and probably most obvious, area to keep an eye on is how much tread your tyres have got left. The tread is there to give you good grip on wet roads. The grooves in the tread clear water away from the contact patch that your tyre has with the road, and so the shallower these grooves are (as the tyre wears down) the less water will be cleared and the more likely you are to aquaplane.

So take the time to look at the sidewalls, checking for tears or bulges. Don’t run your hands along areas that you can’t see, in case any of the tyres structural metal cords are hanging out. They are sharp!

When was the last time that you checked your tyre pressures?

You’ll find the information on a sticker somewhere on the car, or in your car’s handbook. These suggested pressures take many things into account and are vital for maximum safety, braking, grip and good tyre life.

The law states that they need to be a minimum of 1.6mm deep across the middle ¾ of the tread. But it is widely recognised that once your tyres have worn down by over 50%, the amount of grip that they provide in the wet drops off rapidly. Less grip means longer stopping distances, and it’s fairly obvious what longer stopping distances mean.

It’s simple to check your own tyres. All you need is a 20p coin.

Slot the coin into the main grooves of your tyre. If the outer band of the 20p coin is obscured when inserted, your tread is above the legal limit. If you can see any of the outer band, your tyres may be illegal.

If you drive around with under-inflated tyres for a long time, it will weaken the sidewalls, the car won’t handle as it should and the shoulders of the tyres will wear out rapidly. You’ll also use more fuel.

On the other hand, if you over-inflate your tyres your car will be a lot stiffer, it will have less-grip and the middle of your tyres will wear out faster. Plus, if you do hit one of the many local pot-holes, it’s more likely that the tyre will become damaged.

It’s good practice to check your pressures at least twice a month and do it before you drive the car so that they are cold (pressure increases when they get warm).

Paying it Forward in life can create a ripple much further than you realise.

April 30th 2015 is ‘Pay it Forward Day’, a day that encourages us to highlight actions that are already happening on a daily basis around the world.

I have the privilege of helping to promote this ripple effect around the world. I help run one of the groups in the UK www.payitforwardUK.net that encourages others to share their experiences of kindness and demonstrates how its reach can spread globally.

To put a ‘pay it forward’ into a visual image, how about using a social media demonstration?

One person posts a positive picture or quote, their friends and then their friends share this. Before you know it, many people have been positively influenced by the post. They then go on to help others as they become more positive and the ripple expands.

They will appreciate the gesture and they may well act more positively throughout the day themselves.
