Returning for its fourth year, Crawley’s STEMfest, which aims to enthuse the next generation of scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians (STEM), will be holding a day of exciting activities in Crawley on Saturday 16th May. Stem in the Square, will be held between 10am-4pm in Queen’s Square and will feature entertaining hands-on activities, workshops and interactive displays staged by scientists, engineers and technologists from local companies,

universities and colleges and other organisations, intending to inspire young residents to study and follow successful careers in STEM subjects. www.crawleySTEMfest.co.uk

VE Day Street Party Celebrations On 9th May 1945, communities up and down the nation joined together to hold street parties, celebrating VE Day. Now, seventy years later, many of us will be planning on commemorating VE Day with our very own street parties.

But what do you need to know?

- Planners must submit an e-form to the council to close their road to vehicles. If you live on an A road, due to requiring emergency vehicle access at all times, it may be unlikely to be granted permission.

Serving Crawley The General Election is on Thursday 7th May. I’m seeking re-election to ensure further tax reductions – only with a strong, growing economy can we have the public services that we all need and use.

Since 2010, there are an additional 200 doctors and nurses serving Crawley patients.

Conservatives in government have ensured that the NHS budget has increased year-on-year over the course of this parliament. Services are also returning to our town.

Local youth unemployment recently hit a record low, and is down by more than three quarters since 2010. Overall Crawley unemployment is down by 60% at 1.7%.

This is happening, in part, because local firms are benefiting from the £2,000 Employment Allowance, and Crawley companies are being created as a result of the Start-Up Loans scheme.

Pound Hill Resident to Swim the

English Channel!

F

or many of us, the thought of doing a few laps in K2 is enough to tire us out, so spare a thought for Pound Hill’s Kelvin Davies and his relay team, who, in August, will be taking on miles of open water – to raise money for a good cause; spinal injury charity, Aspire.

The swim is expected to start (weather permitting) on 8th August and Kelvin and his fellow five swimmers will be expected to swim two miles in the hour, each one is in the water – with some participants swimming three times during the challenge!

Driven Kelvin, who has been training for the English Channel Swim event since last October, will be swimming for three hours, totalling a distance of up to seven miles but just why is he doing it?

“We want to try and swim about two miles in the hour, in order to meet or beat the tide - if we don’t go fast enough we could literally swim for an hour gaining no distance!” Kelvin explains.

“I started swimming four years ago after frustration with running injuries and have gradually progressed from my first open water event of one mile to my first 10 KM race which I completed last year in 3hrs 52 mins,” the local dad tells us. “I used to do marathons and triathlons often for charity; Children with Cancer and have always been driven to challenge myself to the next level.

“I thrive on testing my own personal limits and am looking forward to being part of the team where we all have different strengths and weaknesses, so we will all help each other through our fears,” the fundraising swimmer continues.

“However, I’m least looking forward to the cold, swimming in the dark, being stung by jelly fish and sea sickness!”

“When I saw an opportunity to join a Team Channel challenge, it seemed the natural next step. Having had back injuries in the past and with my brother also suffering from a serious injury following a motorbike accident, I was drawn to Aspire.”

hen was the last time you did something that frightened you?

Next month, Pound Hill’s Jayne Archer will be climbing the 02 in London to raise funds for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research – a huge feat alone, but especially if you’re petrified of heights!

We caught up with Jayne to hear about her latest fundraising challenge and find out just why this self-confessed acrophobic will be climbing 52 metres above her comfort zone: “I am terrified, just planning this from the sofa makes my heart race and fills me with fear. I’ve yet to see in my loft as I’m not able to even go up a ladder!” Jayne, who tragically lost her husband Mark Henry Archer within just forty days of a blood cancer diagnosis, tells us.

The Crawley resident has raised £5,200 for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research in the last year, through dog walks, pub quizzes, music gigs and football tournaments, and hopes that her latest challenge will help to raise money towards her £50K target, by time she is fifty, in just four years.

Supported by eighteen family members and friends, who will also be climbing 52m above London on Friday 5th June, Jayne is hoping to raise between £1,000 -£1,500 for the cancer charity so close to her heart.

“On the day, I know Mark will be there with me. He’ll be smiling down wondering what on earth I am doing but proud. I’m doing it for him!”

When asked what she’s looking forward to the most about the challenge, Jayne replied: “Raising a glass of Prosecco afterwards with everyone..! Seriously, I’m looking forward to having dear friends around me and us taking this on together, as well as being able to say that I’ve done this for Mark to build his legacy and memory, knowing how proud he would be.”

Coping with Exam Stress M

any parents are concerned about the increasing levels of anxiety and stress they see in their children.

Typically teenagers approaching exams may experience this to the greatest extent. Their bodies are experiencing profound change at a time when the level of pressure placed upon them can seem intense. Living in a highly stimulating world certainly can heighten the feelings of overwhelm. The increased use of technology and high expectations certainly add to this and when there is little opportunity for respite, the mind, body and spirit begin to manifest a variety of symptoms associated with stress.

Learning ways to relax and ‘let go’ of tension are positive steps forward, especially for teenagers. Exercise and breathing techniques can certainly help and developing a simple practice of mindfulness will help them to fully engage with their feelings so they can adjust their thoughts and behaviors before things reach a critical point.

Here are a few tips I feel may help.

By starting to follow a gentle and nurturing routine, in advance of exams, teenagers will feel better prepared to cope with any feelings of anxiety that arise.

• Pay attention to routine. Create a plan to follow, including times for revision and times for other activities that allow the mental body to recover. Introduce time each evening to ‘wind down’ before bed (without stimulation). Eat an evening meal early and have a bath with Epsom Salts (magnesium is proven to lower stress).

Listen to gentle music rather than watch TV or follow a guided meditation such as ‘Relax and Destress‘ produced by Relax Kids.

• Avoid caffeine in drinks and too much refined sugar, which can make the brain feel ‘foggy’. Chamomile tea can be very relaxing and it combines well with warm cherry juice to make a comforting bedtime drink that aids sleep.

• Make time for relaxation including massage, yoga, Reiki and meditation.

They release serotonin (the feel good hormone). Essential oils can help too and lavender is relaxing and safe.

Add a couple of drops to the bath or onto a tissue, placed under the pillow when sleeping. Healthlines also produce a great range of natural sprays and drops to use in the daytime.

‘Confidence Indigo’ is great for exams.

• Limit time in front of a computer screen, especially exposure to social media and bring in other rewards like meals out with friends or healthy treats that lift the spirits.

Introduce affirmation cards and inspire creative activities. Taking time out to be in nature or to do some photography, painting or cooking will help the right side of the brain to function and provide a healthy balance. Yellow is also a great colour to support study and build confidence.

It is possible to have a beautiful bathroom without spending a fortune. Katherine Sorrell outlines her top tips.

• Choose simple white bathroom fittings in standard sizes. Simply use tiles, taps and accessories to create an elegant and upmarket effect. Remember that not all whites are quite the same shade however so make sure they match.

• Try www.gooddealdirectory.co.uk for factory shops, seconds shops and permanent discount outlets nationwide; for listings of shopping villages, outlet stores and factory shops, go to www.shoppingvillages.com.

• Plan carefully so that you avoid moving existing plumbing. By putting the bath, basin, WC, shower and any radiators in the same position you can keep installation costs down. The same applies to existing doors, windows and built-in features such as cupboards or radiators.

• Fitting a new shower? Know your water supply system and make sure you choose a shower that will work with it. If your water pressure is low, for example, you’ll need to choose a type that can cope with this; otherwise you’ll have to install a pump as well.

• A radiator that doubles as a towel rail will save you buying the two items separately, or simply attach a towel holder (such as a plain chrome pole from any DIY retailer) above your existing radiator.

• To avoid the labour cost of removing old tiles and re-plastering the wall, it is often possible to tile over the existing tiles.

• When putting in new tiles, save by only covering specific areas: perhaps up to half-height around the room, or else just the splash backs next to the bath and basin.

Use paint everywhere else.

• Instead of pricey stone or marble wall or floor tiles, find a look-alike made from ceramic or porcelain. They are widely available, attractive, stain-resistant, light (and therefore easy to lay) and should cost noticeably less than the real thing.

• If you love expensive mosaic tiles, limit them to small areas, or else combine them with plainer tiles as a border or insets.

• Rather than installing a blind or having your windows sandblasted, use glass etching spray or stick-on film to ensure your privacy. These days, the latter comes in a wide range of patterns, from plain frosted to your own bespoke designs.

• Custom-built, fitted storage can be expensive. Instead, choose standard-sized, off-the-peg units or else combine a simple set of shelves with free-standing storage such as trolleys, chests, cupboards or baskets.

H

owever much effort you make with your garden, you can be sure that there will still be a few things that look awful. You may have made (or hope to make) beautiful borders, sensational shrubbery and lots more besides, but how do you cope with those things you just cannot seem to hide?

A washing line may be essential but rarely adds to the appeal of the garden. If yours consists of two large poles with a line in between, try growing a pretty climber up the poles. If you use a self-clinging plant such as variegated ivy it won’t need any additional support. Alternatively make a chicken wire, trellis ‘box’ or frame around the posts and then allow the climber to scramble up, using plant ties if necessary.

Summer flowering clematis or sweet pea will look great too. If you do use a more vigorous climber then be prepared to do some intermittent pruning.

Decrepit sheds or moth-eaten garages can be a real eyesore. Sometimes a thorough scrub of the walls will do the trick, or why not make a feature out of the shed or garage and re-paint it. Consider erecting a trellis on one or more of the vertical surfaces and grow a selection of favourite climbers up it to make an even more attractive feature.

If the garden can be a little gloomy then it helps if you paint any surfaces such as garage or shed walls with a paler colour.

If your heating is fuelled by gas from an unattractive and enormous cylinder or oil from a large green tank, you will know that they have to be sited in an accessible position. You can use hazel wattle hurdles to hide them which are perfect as they also match with the adjacent boundary fence.

Try using standard fence panels in the same way and again planting them with climbers or scramblers will help. Whatever you do, make sure that you check on it from time to time and remove excessive climber growth so that the tank remains accessible.

Is it the neighbouring garden that harbours the eye sore which makes you want to retreat back into your house?

Something nasty next door is of course even harder to conceal but why not add a layer of trellis to the top of your existing fence and then use climbers once it is in position.

Hold the trellis in position using batons of wood attached to the existing fence posts or special post-joining metal sleeves that you can buy from your fencing supplier or garden centre. Trellis is available in a range of shapes and need not be straight edged so you can create a range of different looks to suit your gardening style.

Another option is to erect a pergola or arch to obscure or break up an unsightly view or the eyesore in the neighbour’s garden and adding plants will help to add a bit more height and soften the outline.

If you combine some of your favourite flowering climbers with some evergreen planting too, you should even achieve good effects during the seasons when the leaves have fallen from many plants.

Fuel forThought...

n spite of fuel prices recently dropping slightly, it’s no secret that the cost of motoring is on a perpetually upwards spiral. Car ownership was once the reserve of the rich, and there is merit in being of the opinion that one day it will go full circle. The cost of cars is higher than ever, they are more complex than ever and so can prove costly when things go wrong and then there is that burning sensation in the wallet that comes with every visit to the pumps.

4. Plan your journey in advance. Sitting in traffic and getting lost obviously uses more fuel than you need to.

Whilst there’s not much you can do about any of the above prices, I can offer a few tips on increasing your car’s fuel economy and as such increase the amount of time between petrol station visits.

6. You aren’t Lewis Hamilton, yes you might get up the road quicker if you drive fast, but lets face it, you’ll soon have to slow down again and nine times out of ten, the person behind you that was changing gears between 2000/2500 rpm and accelerating and braking gently will catch up to you at the next set of traffic lights, and will have used less fuel in doing so.

With me having a hobby in motorsport that involves burning fuel and rubber like it’s going out of fashion, I’ve learned to be as frugal as possible in every-day driving. I’d like to say it’s to balance my carbon footprint, but the truth of the matter is that it’s to be kind on the bank balance. Here are a few simple tips and techniques that anyone can use to drive more fuel efficiently.

1. It’s quite obvious, but remove any excess weight. It’s not uncommon for a car to become an extension of your storage facilities, but bear in mind that every extra Kg that your car has to move, requires more fuel to do so.

2. If you use roof or bike racks, take them off when you aren’t using them. They affect how the air flows over your car, which means the engine has to work harder, which means it will use more fuel.

5. Switch the air-conditioning off. In fact, switch off anything electrical if you don’t need it on.

7. On a similar note, research shows that when on the motorway a car doing 80mph will use up to 25% more fuel than a car doing 70mph. That’s a lot of fuel to get there five minutes, or so, earlier.

8. It may sound silly, but look far ahead when you are driving. What you want to avoid is accelerating and braking unnecessarily. If you a can keep your car’s momentum by easing off the throttle rather than braking hard and then accelerating again, you’ll use less fuel.
