Having A Ball In Reigate

F

ollowing the success of the inaugural Reigate Charity Ball in 2015, tireless fitness trainer and ball organiser, Helen Delaney, is doing it all over again in 2016. Last year’s event with its theme of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ was held at The Old Reigatians’ Rugby Club and raised an incredible £23,500, every penny of which went to support Pancreatic Cancer UK, The Royal Marsden, and St Catherine’s Hospice.

Most of us will have been affected in some way or other by cancer, either personally or through someone close to us and when Helen’s motherin-law died from pancreatic cancer, Helen was determined to do something in her memory that would benefit other sufferers and help increase awareness. When Patrick Swayze died of the same disease in 2009, it went some way to raising its profile but it remains less well known than other cancers like breast and prostate.

Helen, realising the practical and financial resources available in a town like Reigate, decided to utilise these in a fun and profitable way to highlight the condition

and generate funds, and so The Reigate Charity Ball was born!

As well as running her own successful business, The Fitness Room in Reigate, Helen and her committee of 5 other local ladies, are working hard to organise this year’s event which takes place on Saturday July 2.

Robert Leech and Devine Homes plc, along with Metis Wealth, Createselect and Panaseer are sponsoring the ball and other local companies are donating their services.

The theme this summer is ‘Show Time’ and the venue is Reigate Priory School where a marquee will be erected in the grounds and revellers will dance the night away to the strains of the brilliant band ‘The Blue Rinse’.

As with most good ideas – this one is simple but effective. People love an excuse to dress up and go dancing, to eat, drink and be merry, and will give generously for the privilege. Even at £75 each, the 250 tickets sold out in four minutes (that’s not a misprint, I do mean ‘four’ minutes), such is the enthusiasm and support for this event.

However, for those not quick enough to snap up a ticket, it’s not too late to get involved. Donations can be made via the Virgin Money Giving website, and donated prizes for the raffle, auction and silent auction are very welcome. If you did miss out on tickets this year, make sure you keep an eye on the ‘Reigate Charity Ball’ Facebook page ready for when next year’s tickets go on sale. This is an event set to run and run…. (or should that be dance and dance?).

A Taste Of Honey Oh, what a wonderful thing to be, A healthy grown up busy, busy bee…

n recent years bees and their welfare have created a buzz in the news.

A recent statement from the UN-backed body, IPBES (The Intergovernmental Science Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) said: “Many wild bees and butterflies have been declining in abundance, occurrence and diversity at local and regional scales in Northwest Europe and North America.” The report stressed the importance of protecting pollinators to ensure stable fruit and vegetable output amid concerns over the challenge

of feeding the world’s growing population in the coming decades.

What can we do in the face of such news? I am ashamed to say that until recently, I rarely gave bees or their honey much thought. I bought the occasional jar to spread on toast or add to yogurt, and I’ve signed an online petition about bee welfare, but that’s about it. Not anymore, though!

The Reigate Beekeeping Association was founded in 1917. Its President in the

1930s was Jeremiah Colman of Colman’s Mustard fame (Honey & Mustard – tasty!).

It is one of 8 divisions in Surrey and has more than 200 active members. It’s an activity that brings together enthusiasts of all ages (8 years old to 90+) and abilities (beginners to Master Beekeepers). They have a main training apiary on a 2 ½ acre site just south of Dorking where members meet each Wednesday at 6.30pm from April to the end of August. It’s a beautiful site with 20 bee colonies, a pavilion as an education centre, and when hives are inactive during the winter months lectures are given.

Reigate Beekeepers reach out to the wider community too providing a much-needed swarm collection service. Members also visit schools, fetes and shows to help educate the public.

The Association’s website is full of information, advice, events and recipes, but if you’re really keen to find out more about beekeeping, there will be a Taster Training Day on Saturday, June 16 2016. Visitors will gain an overview of beekeeping and be able to see inside a hive. All equipment and protective clothing

will be provided on the day, but do come in stout trousers and wellies. Admission is £50 per adult/£25 per child.

One member, Suzy, a very passionate beekeeper, went to a Taster Day five-years-ago and now she has four hives in her garden with bee colonies in three of them. She says it’s an addictive hobby as there is always something new to learn. Is there a downside? Yes, she says - getting stung! However, I’ve tasted the honey that Suzy’s bees produce and it is well worth it.

On Your Bike

‘MAMIL’. Any guesses? It stands for ‘Middle-Aged Men in Lycra’, and having heard it, I can’t get the image it conjures up out of my head!

I

hasten to add that there was a perfectly innocent reason why I was discussing men in Lycra I was chatting with Antonia Rees-Brown, founder and Chair of ‘BikeFit Surrey’, to whom men (and women) in Lycra are just part of a day’s work.

Antonia originally started BikeFit Surrey as a small group getting together to exercise in an easy, relaxed way, but this refreshing approach to cycling soon attracted interest and her group is now an official club with a membership of over 40 riders. It serves as an entry point for social and club cycling offering led cycle rides of one to two hours around beautiful South East Surrey. It’s a great way to encourage anyone thinking of returning to cycling after a long break, or those just looking for some friendly company as they ride.

The social aspect of BikeFit is as beneficial as the fitness it develops; the ride pace is mostly ‘conversational and leisurely’, no one is left behind, and all routes are planned to include tea shop and pub stops. It is not competitive and whatever a cyclist’s skill level, there are suitable routes using a combination of quiet roads,

bridle-paths, fields, woodland and hidden tracks. All that is required of new-joiners is that they are able to ride for an hour on the level. This ensures they have the necessary stamina.

Rides take place during the week (8-12 riders on each).

There are one or two weekend rides a month, and three levels to choose from: 1. Ride Easy - to help to build confidence and ability 2. Ride Steady - for those who are ready to push themselves a little to increase fitness 3. Ride Well - for those ready to take on more of a challenge No membership commitment is required initially; there is no charge for the first two rides, and a bike can be loaned for the first ride if necessary.

Even so, a whole year’s membership is just £20, so if you ride once a week, that works out at less than 40p per ride! No gym membership can offer that value for money.

I should add that Lyra is not compulsory, but comfortable, brightly-coloured clothes with a waterproof top are advisable, and a helmet essential. Bikes must be mountain/hybrid (road bikes are not suitable).

As for me, I can’t ride a bike at all, but there is one piece of advice on BikeFit’s website that I will take on board: ‘It’s a good idea to keep a chocolate bar around in case you feel a bit tired suddenly’.

Food Glorious Food!

hen Philippa Ratcliffe suggested that we meet in TEA, the retro café in Reigate High Street, it seemed strangely appropriate as ‘TEA’ just happens to be an anagram of ‘EAT! - the festival we were meeting to discuss. Coincidental or not, it was an ideal setting to chat about this forthcoming event dedicated to food and drink at its best, whilst we enjoyed our perfectly brewed cuppas and tasty tea cake.

Philippa is the irrepressible new Chair of The Reigate Business Guild. The Guild was set up in 1991 as a local voluntary voice from within the business community. Today around 100 organisations both large and small, from in and around Reigate work together to promote commerce, safeguarding the environment, and plan and support activities and events for the benefit of the town. Philippa’s own events company ‘Root & Prosper’ is organising ‘EAT! Food Fest’ -

Last year’s festival was a fantastic success and 10,000 visitors came to Priory Park to enjoy delicious food and drink from local food traders and producers. Glorious weather, beautiful surroundings and a buzzing atmosphere it was like an enormous family picnic but without the inconvenience of having to bring any food as Reigate’s culinary best were there on hand to provide it.

This summer’s festival is on Saturday, July 23 (11.00am-6.00pm) and it promises to be even better than before, with more traders taking part. Set in the beautiful sunken garden of The Priory, oodles of traders will be offering delicious food to buy and sample, and in the Demo Kitchen experts including Chef Tony Tobin, Robert Holden (Barbeque Chef) and Rob Hewitt (butchery) will be giving demonstrations and advice.

There will be 50 stalls - a gourmet’s (and gourmand’s) paradise and when you’ve had your fill and just want to relax there will be music to chill to, art to admire and games to play. Take a wander over to the croquet lawn and you can play a game with the man whose family invented it! Reigate resident, Joe Jacques, helps to run the family business ‘Jacques of London’ which has been in existence for 6 generations and has been creating games

since 1795 (I can feel another article coming on…).

Somehow or other, I missed out on last year’s EAT! Food Fest. Quite how that happened, I don’t know, as my husband can usually smell meat cooking within a 5 mile radius, and I can sense the presence of chocolate in a neighbouring county.

It certainly won’t happen again though, and July 23 is firmly in my diary.

Pugs In The Park P

UGS! The word alone makes me smile.

Although more of a cat than a dog person (I’m too lazy for the daily walks, and too squeamish for poo disposal duties), when I met Peggy the Pug she was so friendly, snuffly, surprisingly soft to the touch, and ohso-cute wiggling her bottom with pure joie de vivre, I was smitten.

Peggy belongs to Helen West, Park Officer for Reigate and Banstead Council. Helen found her at ‘Many Tears Rescue Centre’ and she brings Peggy to work with her at the Priory Park Office. Helen soon realised how sociable these little dogs are, and how much they love other pugs; so she started a regular Meet. Since then, a growing number of pugs and owners rendezvous in Priory Park on the last Sunday of every month. Whatever the weather, they gather between 2-3pm at the Pavilion, take a short walk (pugs can’t walk very far) and finish at ‘Pistachios

in the Park’ for a well-earned rest and refreshments.

There are Pug Meets all around the country - nearby Caterham also has one - and they can include cross-breeds like Chugs (Chihuahua/Pug) and Jugs (Jack Russell/Pug). Helen’s group has a Facebook page, ‘Redhill, Reigate and Merstham Pugs’, where photos and news are shared, along with information about the meets.

There is a great sense of fun in the group and dogs are often dressed in festive outfits. A summer picnic is planned but the two-legged members will need to keep a tight hold on their sandwiches as apparently, pugs eat anything on ground level!

Groups like these are great and demonstrate just how this breed has been conquering the world and our hearts in recent years, even infiltrating Hollywood. In ‘Men in Black’ Frank the alien uses a pug disguise. In ‘Kingsman’ special agent, Eggsy chooses a pug

thinking it’s a bulldog and will grow! In the real world, of course, owners make informed choices and it’s easy to see how pugs have become a hugely popular pet - they have such charm, and their compact size makes them very user-friendly.

Crufts says this: “A dignified dog, very intelligent, goodnatured and sociable… robust and self-reliant, with great character and personality.

An adaptable companion for both young and old, and one who integrates himself very closely with family life. He can talk with his eyes, has his mischievous moments, and usually lives to a ripe old age.”

Interestingly, Crufts adds: “The Pug arrived in England when William III came to the throne… once very popular with royalty and the aristocracy.”

Maybe when our next King William is crowned, the pug will become a royal dog once more. How fantastic would that be?! (no offence, corgis)

Allotment Life

aaah! The fragrant aromas of approaching summer waft gently over on the breeze. Sweet Pea, Roses, Lilac….and horse manure! A steaming pile of it, freshly delivered to nearby allotments where its arrival is welcomed enthusiastically by tenants; and their benefactor, a local stable owner, is given produce in return for his generosity.

According to The National Allotment Society, trends show that in times of recession people turn back to the land, desiring to reconnect with something tangible - a sense of satisfaction is felt from producing home-grown food which is both cheaper and healthier. In the 1970s with the 3 day week and trade union unrest, the BBC broadcast ‘The Good Life’. Today, with economic uncertainty on a global scale, the desire for more space to grow food locally and experience life’s simple pleasures has reignited the call for more allotments.

Our borough has 24 sites (6 within Reigate), some with waiting lists and others without.

There are plots available immediately at the Weldon Way site in Merstham, and also at the Riding School site in Woodhatch. Half plots (125sq metres) cost £41 per year, and in certain circumstances full plots (250sq metres) are available at £82.

Allotment folk are a friendly bunch, and along with their love of fertiliser they share a passion for better tasting, abundant fruit and vegetables – flowers too, of course; and although tenants take different approaches to the cultivation of their own plot, there is mutual respect and a great community spirit.

and shared, interest is taken in neighbouring projects, and barbeques, picnics and regular cuppas are a perfect way to take a break with friends old and new. One seasoned couple, Jo and Kate, say they chat more to their neighbours as they pass them on site than at home where a high fence separates their gardens.

It’s not all roses though (excuse the pun), tenants do have their ‘bug’ bears (and that one). Insect, rodent and bird pests can make the work difficult and frustrating; and there is a more sinister pest at work too - theft is a common problem. The Police call allotments ‘soft sites’ as they are easy to access, deserted and unlit at night, and victims rarely

report their losses thinking that a missing watering can is hardly the stuff of Crime Watch.

However, Eddie, steward on the Park Lane site and himself a victim, stresses the importance of reporting every theft however ‘minor’.

Yet even these things cannot deter the really dedicated ‘allotmenteer’. There is a deeply satisfying, timeless quality - a connection with our horticultural heritage - when cultivating one’s own plot of land, using tools not so different from those of our ancestors. In this technological age there are great rewards for those who put down their phones and pick up a fork!

Mantra Magazines, originally named RH10 Uncovered, started life in May 2006 on a dining room table, before a spare room, then a garden shed, which eventually was out-grown too.

They expanded from just one title covering the RH10 postcode to now six titles and the company has worked out of offices in Rowfant since 2010.

Community and family are core values at the heart of the business. In the early days, it was staffed exclusively by family members; alongside Nikki and Matthew were Nikki’s niece Nadine and Matthew’s brother David. Nikki’s late aunt Theresa even came trans-Atlantic from Vancouver to help sell the vision of the magazine to local businesses for six months!

Making Memories: Nikki and Matthew laugh as they recall the time Matthew was ‘rescued’ whilst taking a photo for the launch issue’s front cover. He was lying on his back in a flower bed at Snowhill Garden Centre, trying to get the perfect shot of some blossom when an elderly couple thought he had collapsed! Nikki chuckles as she recalls “They rushed to his aid but in fact he was simply trying to find an angle of the blossom so as to get the sky in the background. Certainly a memorable moment for me.

Still makes me laugh ten years-on!”

Is your mole a friendly one?

We are not talking about the furry mammals that live in tunnels, but more importantly, melanoma which usually presents itself as little brown spots just like moles.

o know if they are friendly or not you need to keep an eye them. There are certain changes to the areas that need to be watched and if any of these happen you should contact your GP or skin cancer specialist straight away and explain what you have noticed.

Things to look out for:

• If they get lumpier across the surface or change in size • If the border of the area changes in shape • If they itch or bleed

1. Slip on a T-Shirt and other clothing to protect bare skin if you feel the heat is too much

• If they change in colour – particularly turning patchy

2. Slop on the sun cream (remember areas such as ears and neck)

ay is National Walking Month and campaigners hope to use the month to promote the benefits of everyday walking and to get everyone on the move, no matter what your level of fitness.

Walking is simple and free as well as being one of the easiest ways to be more active, lose weight and lead a healthier lifestyle. Unfortunately the benefits of walking as a form of exercise are often overlooked.

The advantages of walking range from helping improve your physical and mental wellbeing and by building walking into your day you can also save money and help the environment.

Charity Living Streets is encouraging us all to make simple changes to our days such as walking all or part of our commute, planning a walking meeting or going for a lunchtime walk.

Walking for just 20 minutes a day can transform fitness levels, improve health and reduce stress and anxiety.

Taking a brisk walk can burn up to 110 calories – an easy way to burn calories.

With many of us rushing from the commute to the office, and then eating lunch at our desks before heading home for a night in front of the television, we are unwittingly risking our health.

Evidence shows that physical activity can also be effective in boosting mood. In addition, it is a great way to clear your head at the beginning or end of a stressful day.

4Sight Ramblers (Mid Sussex South) Celebrate their 5th Birthday Next month is the fifth birthday of 4Sight Ramblers (Mid Sussex South), a 30-strong member group of walkers who are blind, partially sighted or volunteers.

Leaders Anne Tomlinson and Jane Aston came together when they recognised blind and partially sighted people had difficulties getting out in the countryside.

The group meets on the first Monday of the month at a chosen venue and walks for

around four miles before stopping for a meal at a nearby pub or restaurant.

Everybody who needs one gets assistance from a volunteer guide who helps with the walk and the post-walk lunch, volunteer drivers also provide transport.

With summer hopefully around the corner, there are a few basic checks that can be done to help keep you on the road.

Coolant Believe it or not, the same stuff that prevents your engine from freezing during the long winter nights also helps stop it overheating during long summer days.The biggest reason for summer breakdowns is overheated vehicles. So check your coolant level weekly, also get your local garage to test the strength of the coolant mix if your car hasn’t been serviced recently. Check the condition of the auxiliary drive belt (also known as the fan belt), too. If your car does overheat, wait at least an hour for the engine to cool down before attempting to remove the radiator/ coolant tank cap.

Fans/Air Conditioning It’s unlikely that you’ve used the air conditioning during winter, so check it still blows cold. It might

also be worth having your pollen filter changed – a blocked filter puts extra strain on the electrical system.

Tyres Check your pressures regularly, especially before setting off on a long journey.

Remember these are your contact patch for the road. The minimum legal tread depth requirement is 1.6mm, but you should look at changing for new when you get to 3mm.

Lights We use our lights less during the summer months, so it’s easy to miss a blown bulb.

The last thing you want is to be caught out in the dark with no lights. Take some spare bulbs and do a quick check regularly.

It’s worth considering that if you’re going on holiday in your car, save yourself any dramas and get it serviced by your local garage before you head off.

Preparation time:10 minutes + marinating Cooking time: 25 minutes Total time: 35 minutes + marinating Serves: 4 Ingredients ½ x 568ml bottle Stella Artois Cidre 4 tbsp maple syrup 4 cloves garlic, halved 8 sprigs thyme 420g essential Waitrose British Pork Fillet, cubed 2 courgettes, thickly sliced 8 shallots, halved 1 red pepper, seeded and thickly sliced Olive oil spray

Method 1. Place the cider in a large glass bowl and stir in 2 tbsp of the maple syrup, the garlic cloves and half the thyme sprigs.

Add the pork and leave to soak for at least an hour or overnight.

Barbecue, grill or griddle the skewers for 15–20 minutes, turning regularly until cooked through.

Strip the leaves from the remaining thyme sprigs and stir into the remaining maple syrup. Brush onto the skewers and continue to cook for a further 5 minutes until shiny and nicely browned.

Serve with leafy salad and a chilled glass of the remaining cider.

Give Them a Life Skill

You may have given them the gift of life, but what about giving your children an important life skill?

I

n a recent survey*, 49% of parents said that they felt “overwhelmed” by the sheer responsibility of this, and even more than half of those questions also said that they felt there just weren't enough hours in the day to give their children the grounding or life skills they need. Sound familiar?

Don’t panic, here are just a few life skill suggestions, which you can easily slip into your busy days!

Reading It goes without saying that reading is important - each day we need to read to take in a variety of information, be it from medicine bottles, road signs, application forms, the list goes on; all to be able to carry out simple everyday tasks. By starting to read to our children (and continuing to do so!) from an early age improves their understanding of language and vocabulary, making reading second nature. It can also open discussions to feelings and thoughts too. Many reading charities suggest reading out loud to our children, even when they can read for themselves, to improve their skills and motivate them to learn more words, which may be above their current reading ability.

Schedule in reading time once a day, to pass on this life skill to your child - even just fifteen minutes before bed could make a big difference!

Viewing a property can be a very daunting prospect! Picture it; you’re in someone else’s house, with a total stranger whose job it is to convince you to buy probably one of the most expensive things you’ll ever own.

aking a decision about a property is not something to take lightly, don’t let your manners get the better of you – ask questions about your potential dream home!

Here is our guide to the 10 questions you should be asking your estate agent: 1. Why are they selling?

It might sound simple but can be forgotten! The seller may be moving because there’s something wrong with the property, for example, noisy neighbours.

Listen for clues about whether their reason for moving might have a positive effect on any offer you may make.

A homeowner wanting a quick sale to move abroad may accept a lower offer than one moving to the other side of town!

2. How long has the property been marketed and how many viewings have there been?

If it’s only just come onto the market and there have been lots of viewings, this could signal a problem when it comes to negotiating a discount on the price – the more people looking the more likely a bidding war will ensue! If it’s been a while, ask the agent’s opinion about the possible reasons why.

Is the asking price too high or could there be other reasons why it hasn’t sold?

9. Have any renovations been done?

How did this change the property and who worked on it – professional builders or DIY-ers?

10. How old is the boiler, and when was it last serviced?

When was the boiler installed? When was the last time it was serviced and is there a warranty?

Ask the estate agent to pop the heating on taking note of how quickly the property warms up.

St Catherine’s Hospice New Horizon’s Garden and Produce Fair

On Sunday May, 8 the Worrall family are kindly opening their seven-acre garden, Birchanger Gardens in Handcross to the public in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice.

With displays of azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias and magnolias and a grassy avenue, lake, lily pond, pergola, Etruscan-style temple there will be much to see.

Open 2.00pm – 5.30pm with entrance £5 and children free. Dogs must be on leads. Free car parking and refreshments will be available.

Returning for 2016, St Catherine’s New Horizon’s Appeal Garden and Local Produce Fair is to take place in the grounds of Cuckfield Park on Thursday May, 19.

The prestigious fair has become known as West Sussex’s mini ‘Chelsea’, bringing together wide-ranging traders, specialist plants, garden products and local food.

Last year’s fair attracted more than 800 visitors browsing stalls. Since 1989, the appeal has raised more than £2.5 million for St Catherine’s.

Open 10.30am – 3.30pm, entrance £4, or £12.50 for stall preview ahead of public entrance from 8.30am.

When creating your very own to-visit list, don’t forget to include all those places and things you’ve wanted to do locally, but have always put off; just because you don’t need to travel far, it still very much counts!

Reader Gill Hudson from Haywards Heath has picked a topical local attraction. This year marks 90 years since the irresistible bear created

by English author A. A. Milne first appeared in print in the book Winnie-the-Pooh and Pooh Corner in the Ashdown Forest and is somewhere that Gill is planning to visit during the birthday celebrations.

I find myself driving through the Ashdown Forest a lot but never seem to find time to stop – one day I will stop and play Poohsticks!

The Milne family lived beside a small stream with their farmhouse laying a short distance from a wooden bridge that they needed to cross to reach the Ashdown Forest; it was on one of these visits that A. A. Milne’s son Christopher and his Nanny played the game of Poohsticks.
