s we take a nostalgic look back to 10-years-ago when we launched Mantra Magazines, we realised just how much times have changed! Do you remember the tech trends of 2006? Here is some of the techy news that hit the headlines way back then...

Rotary club of Reigate

W

riting these articles is such an eyeopener for me.

All I previously knew of the Rotary Club of Reigate was their wonderful festive singing around the Morrison’s and Old Town Hall Christmas trees every December, when their carolling cheers weary shoppers, supports charities and reminds us of the real meaning of the season.

However, I now realise that a Rotary Club is for life, not just for Christmas!

The organisation was started in Chicago in 1905 by an attorney called Paul Harris, who wanted to create a forum where professionals could exchange ideas and form friendships. The unusual name refers to the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member. Their motto is ‘Service Above Self ’, and today over 1,000,000 Rotarians worldwide fulfil this sentiment as they generously and selflessly serve their communities.

Since 1979 the Rotary International has played a huge part in the fight against polio.

Now, along with The World Health Authority and The Bill

and Melinda Gates Foundation (which matches each dollar raised with two dollars), their fund-raising has helped eradicate polio from all but three countries (Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria). Jeff Raikes, the CEO of The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation said, “When Rotarians combine the passion for service along with the power of a global network, you are unstoppable, and the Gates Foundation is proud to partner with you. Let’s make history and End Polio’’. What an incredible endorsement from such a small beginning.

The Rotary Club of Reigate is one of the larger in the country with 50 members. They meet for lunch each Tuesday at 12.30pm at The Reigate Manor Hotel where they listen to a speaker. They make a wonderful contribution to the local area especially supporting schools and youth work in various ways - promoting literacy, supporting youth clubs, organising competitions, and also encouraging children to raise funds for good causes themselves - Rotarians in the making maybe.

Community projects are also a large part of their work – there’s the Christmas carolling, which last year raised £5,000, and other community events include an annual auction at the Methodist Hall, quiz evenings at Park Church (URC), theatre productions and international evenings. All these occasions are great fun and an enjoyable way to raise funds for local and international causes. Charities like Loveworks, Canine Partners and Sparkfish are just three of the many local charities which have benefitted from their endeavours.

In 1905 Rotary was a men-only club, not so in 2016!

New members are very welcome at the Reigate Club and if you aren’t able to commit to something regular there is the opportunity to join ‘Friends of the Rotary’, and don’t worry if you can’t sing – it’s not compulsory.

A ‘Piece’ful Pastime

I

n this hi-tech age of online gaming (when just dodging invites to play Candy Crush Saga is a game in itself) you might think that jigsaw puzzles have had their day, but in this fast and frenetic modern world, many people are looking to quieter pursuits to help them unwind and relax. The recent craze for adult colouring books bears testimony to this but when it comes to creating beautiful pictures, a jigsaw beats colouring-in hands down! You don’t need coloured pens, nor to worry about keeping in the lines, and you can do it over and over again.

It is true to say that Mary Hyde and her husband, John, are jigsaw puzzle fanatics. John is an expert who gives regular talks on the subject and owns a museum-quality collection, many dating back to the 19th Century. Mary admits that it took her a while to succumb but the old adage ‘if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em!’ proved true and she herself now has over 600 wooden jigsaws, all of which are available through her ‘Wray Park Jigsaw Library’.

Mary’s library idea began when neighbours asked to borrow the puzzles that she brought to her mother in sheltered housing. Mary realised the puzzles were a form of therapy by promoting dexterity (wooden pieces are easier to handle than cardboard), stimulating the mind, and helping to pass the time. Although initially intended for the housebound and elderly, Mary’s scheme now welcomes members from all walks of life.

One lady, Jenny, borrows puzzles regularly to share with her daughter and she can’t speak too highly of the service Mary provides.

‘I just love her jigsaws!’ Jenny enthuses.

Her particular favourites are ‘Wentworths’.

These are modern and generally very colourful jigsaws with unique ‘whimsies’ - pieces shaped like animals, flowers, etc., according to the subject matter. ‘They are so different - ordinary jigsaws just aren’t enough of a challenge’.

Membership costs £5 and a colour catalogue is provided. Borrowing costs are £5 and this includes either one large puzzle (more than 600 pieces) or 2/3 smaller ones, along with door-to-door delivery and collection. Sizes range from 50-1,000 pieces and the selection includes over 100 of the popular Wentworth jigsaws. Some puzzles were donated by a now defunct jigsaw club and each of these contains a little comment book inscribed by members in the 1950s. They make delightful reading and there are even comments from Princess Margarita of Denmark and Lord Mountbatten! The latter was obviously a man of few words when it came to puzzling - ‘Complete’ is all his Lordship was prepared to divulge about one jigsaw he did.

So, for the opportunity of enjoying a jigsaw once done by a Peer of the Realm, why not join Mary’s library? With her user-friendly service, it’s a ‘piece’ of cake!

A walk on the wild side

H

ere in Reigate, in the heart of the Surrey countryside, we are very privileged to live surrounded by wildlife.

Along with parks and gardens aplenty, we don’t have to go far to see nature at work, rest and play. It is often quite literally on the doorstep (if our garden newts are anything to go by), yet because of this, it can be easy to take it for granted and assume that it will always be with us, without realising quite what a detrimental impact our human activities can have on our furry, scaly, and feathered friends.

One person who knows this all too well is TV presenter, Simon Cowell, well-known for his promotion of needy wildlife creatures. No, not that Simon Cowell (although the description is surprisingly applicable), but Simon Cowell MBE, presenter of Discovery Channel’s ‘Wildlife SOS’,

and Founder and Managing Trustee of The Wildlife Aid Foundation. Simon says, ’For thousands of years there has been a very delicate balance between Man and Nature, but in the past century that balance has shifted decisively in Man’s favour, to the detriment of the Natural world. We must redress that balance.’ ’ Simon’s Leatherhead based Wildlife Aid Foundation was started in the 1980s as a small wildlife rescue charity, but it has since become one of the UK’s leading environmental and animal welfare organisations, dedicated to the rescue, care and rehabilitation of sick, injured and orphaned British wildlife.

Simon and his team deal with over 20,000 incidents each year and have a 70% success rate for returning rescued animals into the wild.

No wild animal or bird in need is ever turned away.

All this is made possible by 300 dedicated volunteers who devote their time and energy to this essential work. The charity receives no government funding and despite their TV coverage on ‘Wildlife SOS’, very little income is received

through this exposure. Running costs amount to £1,000 a day, so donations and support from the public are crucial to the charity’s survival and consequently, for the survival of the animals in its care.

There is a huge amount of information on the charity’s website but to enable people to really get a sense of what the work is all about there will be an Open Day on June 19.

This event provides a unique opportunity to get a behindthe-scenes look at this leading wildlife hospital.

All you need is Loveworks

I

first met Linda Sourris, Loveworks’ founder, 8 years ago. At that time the charity was just a twinkle in her eye but Linda is such a force of nature that it soon gave birth to something much bigger.

Linda says, ‘I knew I wanted to set up an organisation that linked people willing to help with local people in need. I was burning with the desire to do a homeless banquet, and treats for single mums’.

During a visit to a friend’s church in Florida Linda noticed they ran a scheme called ‘Loveworks Local’ which provided among other things, ‘a homeless banquet, and treats for single mums’. Linda felt it was too much of a coincidence to be a coincidence!

With the church’s permission she borrowed the name, returned home and ‘Loveworks’ was born. The rest, as they say, is history.

Actually, it’s not history it’s very much in the present. Although Linda is no longer involved, Loveworks has four trustees and 450 volunteers who continue to serve the local community.

They run pamper sessions for single mums, food banks for the homeless and needy, afternoon teas for the elderly and for carers, and Christmas gift bags for those struggling to make ends meet. Loveworks co-operates with agencies like Age Concern and local hostels to help identify particular needs.

Interestingly though, it’s not just what they do that’s important, it’s the motive behind it.

Loveworks’ Chair, Uthim Hatari, puts it like this:

It’s not what we give, but how we give what we give that counts Loveworks’ aim is that all their recipients, no matter what they’re going through, feel valued and appreciated. One grateful girl says, ‘It’s hard being a single mum and when someone just comes along and says “Here, this is for you” it makes you feel cared for’. Another young woman was in tears following a pampering session.

She had never seen herself in makeup before and she was amazed at how good it made her feel.

All this of course, comes at a cost but Loveworks employs just one salaried member of staff.

New volunteers are always needed and there is currently an urgent need for food bank supplies as stocks are very low.

Monthly collection points for food donations are detailed on social media and any contribution, no matter how small, will help make a difference.

Fundraising is a constant need and can be great fun.

There is a Charity Golf Day at Bletchingly (June 28), the Prudential Ride London (July 30/31) and the Royal Parks Half Marathon (October 9). Even if you aren’t able to support in these ways, new ideas of how and who to help are also valuable.

A Right Royal Revelry

BOGOF! It’s not a term I would usually use in reference to royalty but Buy-One-Get-One-Free always comes to mind when I think of the Queen and her birthdays. She has a regular one like the rest of us (hers being April 21), but then she has an extra one thrown in for free in June. It must be rather nice receiving two lots of birthday treats but then the downside is having to write all those thank-you letters, of course.

Reigate is to mark Her Royal Highness’s extra ‘official’ birthday this year with ‘A Very British Reigate Party’ in Priory Park on June 12.

Partnered with and supporting The British Legion, Reigate Business Guild have stepped up and taken on the task of organising a day of royal revelry in honour of our amazing monarch as she celebrates her 90th birthday.

Events will kick off loudly at midday with The Surrey and Sussex Drum and Bugle Band parading through the town from the Town Hall in Castlefield Road down into the Priory.

The park will be a riot of colour on the day with a liberal spread of Union Jacks and Chelsea Pensioners. Although the Queen herself won’t be making an appearance, local nonagenarians have been invited to join in the birthday celebrations. They have lived through every stage of her reign and can reminisce, comparing memories as they enjoy their well-deserved free tea and cake. We youngsters of 89 and under will have to pay for our refreshments, of course, but there will be a wonderful choice from various local traders including street food and beer, and rather more genteel Pimm’s and afternoon tea. If you enjoy cooking yourself, there will be a competition to make ‘A Cake for a Queen’.

Entertainment throughout the afternoon will be varied and glorious with live music from local favourites Eddie Smith and the 507 (named the UK’s best Unsigned band of 2015), with their mix of soulful blues and melodic pop.

At the other end of the musical spectrum, award-winning soprano, Joanna Forest will be performing on stage. I wonder which act would get Elizabeth’s foot tapping if she were in the audience?

Other entertainment will include a vintage fair, a display of military vehicles, face-painting and a 1970s-themed fun sports event with sack, wheelbarrow and egg & spoon races. The afternoon will finish at around 6.00pm and for those with enough puff left after all that exercise, excitement and eats, the grand finale will be a rousing proms-style sing-a-along.

Some readers may have had the honour of attending one of the Queen’s garden parties at Buckingham Palace, but for the rest of us, the next best thing is A Very British Reigate Party in The Park.

Festival Welcomes All Bard None …which bars a thousand harms and lengthens life.”

‘To be, or not to be? That is the question…’ and in the year which marks the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death, the answer is ‘Yes!’ Reigate Community Festival is again ‘to be’ with Shakespeare as its theme throughout the day in Priory Park on Saturday July 2 (10.30am – 10.30pm). However, another of the great man’s quotes ‘Put money in thy purse’ (Othello) is less applicable as so much of the festival’s 12 hours of entertainment will be FREE! Following the success of Armed Forces Day in Priory Park 2009, a group of local people including current chair Collette Barber, set up Reigate Events Collective with the aim of encouraging and establishing local events of which Reigate Community Festival has become the flagship. The purpose was to create entertainment for families that didn’t require them to take out a small mortgage.

As a mum herself, Collette knew from personal experience just how expensive taking children for a day out can be, and she has ensured that this festival remains a ‘not-for-profit’, fun occasion without breaking the bank whether you are a family of 1 or 21!

Staging a show in the medieval grandeur of the Garden of England

Borrow a field, a playground or use the beach, split your guests into teams and host a series of Olympic events, something similar to adult circuit training you will be familiar with from your visits to the gym.

Developing children’s creativity, this party is all about capturing fun. Borrow some digital cameras, phones with cameras or, ask the kids to bring their phone or iPod with them.

Encourage them to collect things as they go - but nothing to the detriment of the environment! The collected items can be used to make a collage on your return home – time to get creative.

However, for fun turn this Olympic Party on its head make the guests run the 100 metres in wellies or some other novel way of turning the average Olympic sport into something more whacky for fun!

Split the guests into two groups, give them a camera and under adult supervision provide them with a list of landmarks or items you would like them to photograph.

What better than going-out and picking your own? The best of the fruit this month is cherries and berries...

Last year, scientists at the Oregon Health and Science University in the US claimed eating cherries helped athletes recover from exercise pain.

55 runners were found to experience less pain after training if they had drank cherry juice. Good to know! Cherries, should be picked when they are of maximum size, if they are picked before they are fully mature they will not ripen off the tree.

Cherries keep longer if the stems remain attached and can be stored in the refrigerator to be enjoyed for two to three days after.

Blueberries A true favourite of our American cousins, the fruit which is so often deliciously served in a muffin or with a pancake, is only ripe when easy to pick – if they show resistance, they simply aren’t ready. Another tell-tell sign if the blueberry isn’t ripe is a red ring around the top of the berry where the fruit is attached to the stem. After picking, cool blueberries as quickly as possible to around or 1.5°C or 35°F.

Blackberries Pick blackberries as they become soft - it is best to pick early in the day because the berries do not spoil as quickly as those picked in the afternoon. Not many people know that!

Blackberries that are picked at the proper time of day and season, handled carefully, and then stored in a cool place will stay in good condition for several days after.

Strawberries Often-ranked as Britain’s favourite fruit, the strawberry is synonymous with the month of June - a staggering 27,000 kilos of strawberries are eaten at the Wimbledon Championships alone, together with 7,000 litres of cream! It is best to pick strawberries in the morning when the berries are cool and the berry should be picked with the stem attached by grasping the stem between the thumb and forefinger and pinching it off of the main plant.

For best storage, keep strawberries at a temperature below 4.5°C or 40°F.

Our teeth help us chew and digest food, they help us to talk and speak clearly and they also help to define our face shape. We’ve got to look after these beauties!

National Smile Month, organised by the independent charity Dental Health Foundation is a chance to take a refreshed look at our oral health, learn more about why a healthy smile is so important and share tips on how to improve and maintain a healthy smile which will make you feel and look good.

Dentists say there are three key principles to developing great oral health; brush your teeth at least twice a day, visit your dentist regularly and limit your intake of sugary foods and drinks - these are a very good starting point for a healthy smile.

Maintaining good oral health is a fairly simple task.

Failure to maintain good oral health over a long period of time can sometimes lead to unnecessary, invasive and expensive treatment. Poor oral health can lead to direct problems such as gum disease and tooth decay as well as indirect problems such as an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes.

The benefits of developing and maintaining a healthy smile are clear. By following some simple rules you can bring about some remarkably positive differences to many aspects of your life - from improved self-confidence to career and relationship success, a healthy smile can truly transform you!

Plotting a vegetable garden

Even the smallest garden can find space to grow vegetables. Start now and you can enjoy delicious home-grown salads all summer long.

P

roducing useful quantities of your own vegetables doesn’t take up as much space as you might imagine. There’s a lot you can plant out or grow from seed right now that will give you some super-tasty, succulent, and top-quality salads in just a few weeks’ time.

Before you get sowing or planting, choose the right containers. Big ones are easier to maintain than small ones; and of course bigger pots mean more produce. Go for something of at least 30cm (12in) in diameter, larger if possible.

As salad crops tend to be pretty short-term there’s no need to spend a fortune on compost.

Ideally choose a good-quality multi-purpose compost but you can get perfectly acceptable results with the contents of a growing-bag.

I find the quality of the compost in these isn’t all that brilliant, but if it’s well-fertilised, it will be adequate.

If you grow your own salad leaves you can get precisely the mix you like best. There are plenty of eye-catching lettuces such as the frilly Lollo or the gorgeous burgundy-tinged Lollo Rosso. Treat them as cut-and-come-again crops, snipping off the leaves as you want them but not cutting into to the base, then they’ll put out new shoots and keep cropping for longer.

Baby beet leaves are a popular salad ingredient too. Choose a variety like Bull’s Blood for the prettiest leaves or grow any of the standard varieties, and you’ll also get a great-tasting root crop later on. I generally harvest the young leaves a few at a time but let the plant produce a root too.

When buying tomato plants, hunt carefully to find the ones that are still in top condition. Outdoor varieties can be grown in their own pot - if you have a big enough container you can grow some other salad ingredients around the edge of the container.

Fresh herbs can make a salad more interesting too. Choose your favourites and either grow them in a dedicated herb pot with extra grit in the compost for good drainage.

Vegetables, like most plants, do best in a relatively warm spot with plenty of sun but sheltered from wind, so site your containers carefully. You may prefer to raise some of your crops in pots and grow them on a bit before planting them out. The garden containers will always be full and looking their best, even while you’re harvesting them. The new plantings will very quickly blend in with the old, and all summer long you’ll have a garden that’s pleasing to the eye.

else’s. We tailor the training to your needs and requirements, on the things you have trouble with or want to know more about.

Our training consist of 1hr sessions and in these sessions we would cover topics like, getting to know your iPAD, arranging apps, folder creation, shortcuts to favourites, sending emails, internet searching, facetime, social media.
