Welcare in East Surrey ‘A stitch in time saves nine’

or non-sewers out there, the phrase means doing a small repair ‘in time’ prevents a bigger tear and more stitches later, and centre manager Julie Mitchell, thinks it sums up the work of Welcare.

Life can be hard at the best of times but when a family has no means of accessing help and advice issues can spiral out of control unless someone or something steps in to help Welcare comes in.

The charity was established more than 120 years-ago, yet the need to support families is as high as ever. A worryingly increase in poverty and need, and vulnerable families means a need for charities like Welcare, who can provide a lifeline to those struggling to cope.

Their services are available to families with at least one child 0 -13, or with a baby on the way, and the range of provision they offer is varied and flexible.

They work in partnership with families to help with practical needs as well personal support, encouraging and empowering parents and

children by building their confidence and self-esteem.

They provide parenting and children’s groups, crèche support and workshops, social activities, outings, one-to-one support, clinics, a toy library and first-aid courses, in fact, anything that a family might need Welcare will do its best to provide it.

Funding for this vital work comes from churches, charitable grants, local businesses, individuals and the County Council, and manager Julie hasn’t given up hope of finding a secret (or not-so-secret) millionaire!

Welcare in East Surrey is the designated Sure Start Children’s Centre for Redhill, and they work in conjunction with Social Services and other agencies.

Anyone can call into the Centre in Warwick Road, Redhill and in a typical month they might see over 300 children and 300 adults.

One past case involved a mum, who hadn’t adequate beds for her children. A call to Welcare resulted in bunk beds being sourced, her son

getting a good night’s sleep and consequently, improving his behaviour which had been challenging due to fatigue.

Another mother who had health problems and four children to support in a damp and poorly equipped flat was helped when Welcare advocated on her behalf and as a result, she was re-housed in much healthier accommodation.

Multiply these examples by hundreds and it becomes clear just what an important and life-enhancing work Welcare is involved in.

So many people are thankful for the work they do and can testify to the difference this charity has made to their lives.

In May there was a Service of Thanksgiving which brought together families and workers (and the Mayor and the Bishop) in one big, happy, grateful group.

No passport required

There’s nothing like preparing for a long anticipated holiday, is there? Navigating the torturous online booking websites where a careless ‘click’ of the mouse can result in additional charges. Forking out £70-odd quid for a new passport. Enduring jabs against those exotic diseases (ouch!) and trying on last year’s swimsuit only to discover that it’s mysteriously shrunk (how did that happen?) Surely there must be an easier way, and there is - HOLIDAY AT HOME!

I

don’t mean actual ‘home’, of course - if you’re anything like me that wouldn’t be a holiday at all, surrounded by the ironing pile and last night’s washing up, but from August 2 - 7, St Mary’s Church organises a holiday right here in Reigate.

During this time this popular scheme based in the Chart Lane Community Centre provides trips and activities of all sorts, and ‘holiday-makers’ can join in with as many or as few as they choose.

This year there will be a trip to The Watercress Line for lunch on a steam train, and a river cruise on the Solent launching from the pretty town of Emsworth.

Closer to home there will be the chance to go on local guided walks, and have a

go at line dancing, and if all that sounds far too energetic there will be a fascinating talk entitled, ‘Round the British Isles’ which won’t involve listeners taking a step.

Other Centre-based activities planned for the week include painting, woodcraft, cake decoration, card making and even conjuring!

The cost is minimal – lunch at the centre is £5 and although there is a charge for the outings, activities in the centre are free.

St Mary’s has been running this scheme for several years and it is immensely popular with locals and is open to people of any age, and when different generations socialise together in joint pursuits, it benefits everyone, meeting new people and sharing ideas.

For the very young, St Mary’s is also running an Olympicthemed Holiday Club during the following week for children of primary school age.

From August 8 - 10 (9.30am2.30pm) there will be games, drama, cooking, arts & craft, and lots more. Children are supervised throughout so it can mean a ‘holiday’ for parents as well as their children!

One regular, Dorothy, has been coming along to Holiday at Home for years. She loves it all but says what she values most are the friendships she has made. It’s great to make friends when we go away but St Mary’s has something to offer that a 5 Star hotel on the Mediterranean may not – friends who are nearby for the rest of the year, and maybe for the rest of our lives.

Fun and games with Jaques

I

’m becoming increasingly nostalgic with age - joining groups whose members grew up in the same area and era as I did, and lingering over family photographs I find when tidying cupboards (those cupboards never do get tidied). My sister and I even returned to our hometown recently visiting old haunts and sharing childhood memories including the games we played.

Now, I’ve discovered that I share my current hometown of Reigate with the man whose family invented those very games! For along with his cousins, Emmett and Ben, ‘Joe of Reigate’ is Director of ‘Jaques of London’, the oldest sports and games manufacturer in the world.

Jaques (pronounced ‘Jakes’) was founded

by Joe’s great, great (plus a few more ‘greats’) grandfather Thomas Jaques, a farmer’s son of French Huguenot descent. He was apprenticed to Mr Ivy, a bone and ivory turner, and mixing business with pleasure Thomas married his boss’s niece.

When Mr Ivy died, Thomas took over and established ‘Jacques’ in 1795. His son, John (JJ I) continued in his father’s footsteps, as did his son, another John (JJ II), and in turn, his son (JJ III) and so on until John V and his brother, Christopher (Ben and Emmett’s father).

Now Ben, Emmett and Joe are the 8th generation of Jaques boys to run this enduring company which has created games enjoyed the world over for more than two centuries – and it’s unlikely to stop there as Joe’s children one-yearold Otto and Evie, three are already game playing experts!

The instantly recognisable Staunton Chess Set was created in 1849 by John Jaques (I). This iconic design (based on The Elgin Marbles) was endorsed by Chess Master, Howard Staunton, who gave his name and signature to the set.

Joe in the workshop Product design is in the Jaques genes and John Jaques II invented ‘Happy Families’ commissioning ‘Alice in Wonderland’ illustrator, Sir John Tenniel, to produce the famous comical characters.

Not one to rest on his laurels, JJ(II) also invented Tiddley-Winks, Ludo, Snakes and Ladders, and most famously of all won a gold medal at the Great Exhibition of 1851 for introducing croquet to England.

In 1901 John Jaques (III) turned their littleknown parlour game, ‘Gossima’, into Ping Pong - today, better known as Table Tennis – now the world’s most popular racket sport; and such was their fame that Queen Mary commissioned JJ IV to make a miniature chess set for the doll’s house in Windsor Castle – a minute game within that magnificent toy!

Their work took a serious turn during the Second World War when M19 commissioned Jaques to create specially adapted games in which maps, money, compasses, etc. could be smuggled to prisoners of war right under the enemy’s nose.

Incredibly, 35,000 men escaped in this way.

Jaques itself was directly affected by the war when their Head Office was destroyed in the Blitz. Thankfully, the safe survived and its contents - the original pattern book - was restored and still exists to this day.

Director Joe loves to point out that their game sales number in millions yet provide happy hours in billions!

Whatever this British summer may throw at us there is a Jaques game to suit all weathers and tastes – indoor games for rainy days, outdoor games for when the sun has his hat on and wants to play too and best of all, no wifi required!

Through his eyes

T

homas Blumire is an extraordinary young man - a gifted photographer, musician and naturalist. Nothing so very extraordinary in that as such, but the fact that Thomas does all this from his wheelchair is what makes this artist so exceptional.

In fact, where his work is concerned, Thomas sees his wheelchair not as a disadvantage, but as an advantage for it gives him a perspective on the world which enables him to notice things that others may overlook.

Many artists suffer for their art but Thomas was suffering long before he picked up a camera or wrote a musical score.

At the age of six, he was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a muscle-wasting disease for which as yet, there is no cure, and for which Thomas needs full-time care.

Yet, his positive attitude to life belies the strain of his daily struggles that are part and parcel of this destructive condition.

Thomas first took up photography when he was 12-yearsold. He says it was a revelation to him and became a way of detracting from his disability and focussing on his ability. Though his movements are severely restricted, with the help of technology and an obliging assistant - his mum! Thomas manages to produce stunning images.

I first became aware of his work when I saw his exhibition ‘Through My Eyes’ at Holy Trinity, Redhill, in May. Thomas is a Christian and his choice of subject matter is influenced by what he sees as God’s creation in the natural world. I am ashamed to say that I wasn’t expecting too much from an amateur exhibition in a modest church hall but my prejudices were blown away when I saw his work!

His artist’s eye captures familiar subjects (flowers, leaves, birds, etc.) in such a way that the viewer sees them in a new light; flowers cropped by the camera, leaves encased in ice, feathers photographed through perspex forming wonderful abstracts... and the colours! Vibrant, contrasting, stunning.

I found it impossible not to be moved by his innnovative and alternative work.

Thomas graduated from Farnham University last year and this exhibition served to launch his website, T J Blumire Photography, and to see how commercial his work could be.

Before the show Thomas was uncertain: “To be honest, I wasn’t sure how well the event would be received, but any expectation I had was completely outdone!”

During the one-day exhibition, more than 200 people came, many ordering prints and almost depleting his stock of greetings cards.

All this bodes well for the artistic future of this young photographer who attributes his talent and inspiration entirely to God. Many may wonder how a person in his position can retain such faith, but that is a subject for a different type of magazine altogether...

Living with dementia

T

he term ‘dementia’ is used to describe the symptoms that occur when the brain is affected by specific diseases and conditions.

There are many different types of dementia, both inherited and non-inherited. The most common forms of dementia include Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, frontal lobe dementia and Lewy bodies.

People living with dementia can experience many different symptoms, including loss of memory, confusion, problems with speech and understanding.

These symptoms can differ from person to person depending on the type of dementia they have.

It is important to create a safe and supportive environment where people with dementia can live comfortably, maintain their independence and not feel restricted. As one of the symptoms of dementia can be confusion, it is a good idea to make everything easily recognisable. Colour contrasts are often a quick and effective way of helping areas stand out.

Surrounding a person with photos or images to trigger some of their favourite memories may also help them feel more comfortable. Reminiscence can be a great tool for therapy to help someone feel relaxed, safe and connected with the people around them.

Access to the outside space is also important as it provides the opportunity for exercise, fresh air, relieves tension and anxiety and offers personal space for reflection and privacy. Spending time outside in a garden has been shown to positively affect a person’s emotions and improve their sense of well-being.

If a person’s dementia means that they need specialist care or support and no longer wish to live independently in their own home, there are a lot of different care options available designed to meet their changing needs.

Loud and proud for Pride 2016!

Widely recognised as the biggest and most popular Pride event in the UK, the Brighton Pride Festival is a spectacular, fun event set in the city’s beautiful Preston Park fueled by pride, love and campaigning.

he first contemporary Brighton Pride took place in 1992 and since 1996 the Pride Festival has been based at Preston Park this year, the event promises to be bigger and better than ever before!

On Saturday, August 6 the streets of Brighton and Hove will come alive as the city unites to celebrate Brighton Pride’s Carnival of Diversity with community groups, charities and performers coming together.

A day filled with world-class entertainment, community and celebrations – the word of the day is flamboyance! This year’s list of performers includes Carly Rae Jepson, Fleur East and Sister Sledge.

In the past three years alone, Pride has raised more than £210,000 for community good causes and this year there are hopes that previous records will be smashed with sights on the global Pride movement.

The theme for 2016 is Uniting Nations, a once in a lifetime opportunity to celebrate the global Pride movement and the worldwide LGBT community – Brighton will be embracing foreign flavours.

There will be sights and sounds from the salsa-laden São Paulo’s Brazil Pride, the stylish Berlin Pride of Germany and the exuberant Sydney Mardi Gras from Australia – three countries collide in one day!

Mediterranean Magic

I

f you can’t get away this year, how about creating your own Mediterranean hotspot in your garden? Even if you do manage to escape to the sun for a week or two this year, you’ll still have the rest of the summer at home and a little slice of Italy, France or Greece outside your back door will bring happy memories flooding back.

The first thing to do is to choose the sunniest spot available – it’ll not only make sitting out there more enjoyable, but will also mean that you can install some serious sun-loving plants too.

Painting the nearby house, shed or garage wall with white masonry paint will help to create the right atmosphere.

At the same time it will help to reflect our sunlight – often a bit washed out compared to more southern climes - so providing a stronger light for the type of plants that appreciate it.

Mediterranean gardens often make full use of the walls and any other vertical surfaces, so put up hanging baskets, pots and wall baskets and cram them full of plants.

Plants in pots are a must and if possible choose stone or terracotta containers.

If you want to make brand new pots look more weathered

try painting them with a solution of plain yoghurt as this will help to encourage rapid colonisation by mosses, algae and lichens.

Any new hard landscaping such as wall, paths or patios and terraced surfaces will look best in natural stone and there are now also terracotta tiles available for use in the garden.

Terracotta tiles can also have a storage-heater effect too – after a long, hot day they will have absorbed heat and this will then be released gradually in the evening.

Add interest to a vertical surface by planting a vine. They have attractive leaves and there are plenty to choose from that will fruit well in our climate.

You may not be able to create your own vintage but the vines will look particularly authentic when draped with a few bunches of grapes.

Glazed tiles, wall-hangings and the odd ornament or two can also add to the Mediterranean look, but make sure you choose items that won’t be instantly bleached by the sun.

Try growing your own oranges or lemons. With our generally milder winters some gardeners are even managing to keep these plants outside all year round with only the

minimum of protection.

Growing your citrus tree in a good-sized terracotta pot means that you can move it into a more protected spot if necessary.

With their wonderful silvery grey leaves and their often rather untidy or gnarled shape, olives too are a plant well worth considering.

Olives are best grown in a large container unless you have a warm garden and a very well-drained soil as they hate winter wet.

Some plants just spell out Mediterranean Magic – try geraniums and pelargoniums, aeoniums and sempervivums, rosemary, thyme, oregano and pretty well anything with silvery foliage.

Go for the brightest coloured flowers and your new holiday destination will also benefit from a subtle Mediterranean aroma too.

Summer Pests The Unwelcome Houseguest!

Summer is a time for entertaining, but some houseguests are never welcome – we’re talking fleas!

By Jacob White Pets can catch fleas from just about anywhere including already infested areas or other animals.

They leap onto them and feed on their blood, and within 24 hours they can lay up to 200 eggs a day.

They won’t all hatch on your pet either, after 2 - 3 weeks some will hatch on your sofa or carpets, in your pet’s bed or in your garden, and the cycle starts again!

What are the signs my pet has fleas?

You may see one on your pet – if you do, there will be more!

There might be dark coloured specks in their coat when you groom – these may be flea droppings Scratching or itching needs investigation Bald patches are another sign (though other conditions can cause this too) Flea bites on family members

If you suspect a flea problem, then a visit to the vet is always a good idea - they’ll be able to prescribe the correct treatment for your pet and also help with products to treat your home.

A two-pronged approach is vital to stopping the hatching cycle. Treat all of your cats and dogs and your home, otherwise, if they have eggs, these will still hatch and will start the cycle over again!

It’s important to keep up the treatment on a regular basis as a preventative measure, or you may get more unwelcome houseguests than you bargained for this summer!

Fruity Cocktails Ginger gin & rhubarb fizz Preparation time: 5 minutes Serves: 2 Ingredients 60ml gin 1 tsp grated root ginger Ice cubes 330ml can Cawston Press Sparkling Rhubarb

Mango sorbet float

Preparation time: 5 minutes Serves: 2 Ingredients 200g strawberries, hulled and chopped 1 tbsp caster sugar 2 scoops Waitrose Alphonso Mango Sorbet 330ml can Cawston Press Sparkling Rhubarb

Method 1. In a jug, stir the gin and ginger together, then cover and chill for up to 24 hours until ready to serve.

2. Strain the gin into 2 tall glasses and add a scoop of ice cubes to each. Top up with the sparkling rhubarb and serve.

Method 1. Place the strawberries and sugar in small pan and heat very gently for 10 minutes until the strawberries are very soft and pulpy. Press through a fine sieve and leave to cool until ready to serve.

2. Place a little of the strawberry sauce and a scoop of sorbet in long-stemmed glasses. Pour in the sparkling rhubarb, drizzle over a little more sauce, and serve with straws and long-handled spoons.

Furever Friends: How Your Pet Improves Your Child’s Development

e’ve all heard the saying; “a dog is man’s best friend”, but in fact it seems that they, along with other pets such as cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters, form meaningful and firm friendships with our children, that can be completely life-enhancing.

As we ‘Aah’ (and reach for the camera!) while they play or take naps together, their cute bond has a deeper, positive effect on their emotional, social and physical wellbeing.

Emotional Benefits As a 14-year-old, Michael Jackson sang about his pet rat, Ben; “With a friend to call my own, I’ll never be alone, and you, my friend, will see, you’ve got a friend in me.” Family pets provide our children with a genuinely meaningful friendship that stands the test of time. Recently, a study from the University of Warwick found that 85% of children thought of their pet as a friend.

It also found that 40% of those asked would seek out their pet if they felt upset.

This could be because they can turn to their furry friend, without fear of being judged or their problems being repeated, the Pet Health Council say.

“Children often find them easier to relate to (the world of grown-ups is often quite confusing!) They know that animals will not judge them, will not ‘break friends’ with them, and will not tell tales,” they explain.

Social Development Don’t be worried if you think your child is shunning other forms of friendships in favour of talking to your pet. The chances are that your pet has helped them to connect with others! Children are more likely to approach and get involved with another, if they are playing with an animal as it bridges the socially awkward gap and shifts the focus from them.

The American Center for Research explored the link between companion animals and childhood anxiety (which can significantly hinder social experiences) and found that it can be eased. The study saw lower blood pressure measures, lower heart rates and reduced behavioural distress. With anxiety now affecting 290,000 children and young people in the UK (according to mental health charity Young Minds), a pet could play a powerful part in combatting the impact it has on your child.

Physical Improvements As well as the obvious exercise benefits of walking or playing with pets, there are plenty of other reasons that they improve physical health. From hand-eye coordination (which can happen when your child scoops food into feeding bowls, for example) to reducing the risk of allergies, your pet may be helping your child’s physical development more than you think.

The Medical College of Georgia in America found that having pets decreases a child’s risk of developing certain allergies such as hay fever and house dust mites by 75%.

The theorist behind the study believes this is because animals can transfer bacteria and in the process, builds a child’s immune system.

European Driving Tips

he summer holidays are on their way and with many choosing to jump in their cars and drive rather than fly, here’s some top tips to help you on your way: Map reading is a dying art these days, thanks to sat navs and mobile phone apps. but it’s a good idea to have a detailed map stashed in the car.

If you’re taking children and they are 12-yearsold or younger, or 135cm in height they’ll need to be sitting in a suitable child seat.

Don’t forget your driving licence, if you get pulled over abroad, the police will want to see it - you’ll also need it if you plan to hire a car.

In France, you are legally required to carry your own breathalyser (probably a good idea if you’re going near one of France’s wine regions!)

Do your research and learn the road rules for an area that you are travelling through.

Also, remember that the road signs are all in metric, and as such the speed limit is displayed in KMPH, not MPH. If you look after your car, it’ll look after you, so get it serviced before you depart as it’ll give you the peace of mind before you set-off.

It’s also worth making sure your breakdown cover extends to Europe. If not, it’ll save you a lot of grief should your car let you down.

Call your insurance company - most cover you for a trip to Europe, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

It is the law that you carry a spare bulb kit in France, so make sure you’ve got one of those.

You’ll also need a hi-vis jacket and a warning triangle.

It’s good practice to make sure you have an inflated spare wheel (not all cars have them these days) and a jack.

I have worked in Horticulture all my adult life having served as an apprentice at Brighton Parks and Gardens. I was even helping to train gardeners for them at the Sussex Parks Training Centre.

The gardens here at the Temple are some 28 acres excluding the buildings, and are a traditional English country garden with wonderful walks through the parkland. These walks vary from a small stroll around the Temple itself where we have traditional flower beds with spring and summer bedding displays to the magnificent Rhododendron walks which are breath taking when in flower in May. We have woodland walks that have Bluebells, Wood Anemones in, not to mention the trees, Oaks, Atlantic Ceders, Lime Trees, and Yew Trees the list goes on. Spring flowers include Daffodils, Tulips, and Forget-me-nots to name a few and if you know where to look little surprises like the Snake Head Fritillaries.

Because the garden houses the Temple it is a garden for quiet meditation, a place for prayer, a place to come and think through life’s challenges, a place to find peace and comfort. For this reason pets are not welcome here and we invite our visitors to respect the quiet space of others, also enjoying the garden and the peace and tranquillity found here. Families are always welcome and it is to be noted that uniting families is one of the main reasons for a temple.
