Express Yourself – With Paper! By Sarah Ballingal

Y

ou’re a crafty lot in Horley - I don’t mean sneaky, of course, just extremely creative. My most recent brush with some of the town’s artisans was at the inaugural session of Lorraine Castellari’s Papercraft group held at Aztec Threads Studio12. Lorraine, a crafter with 20 years experience, is the first to admit that she is obsessed with all things paper, and it was a happy band of like-minded members that greeted me as I joined them around the table and saw the template for the ingenious two-way greeting card that they were starting to create. Each was working to the same design but the colours, patterns and embellishments chosen were all different. Lorraine explained that one of the wonderful things about crafting of any kind is that although the product and process may be the same an individual’s creativity will make each piece truly unique, and is a wonderful way of self-expression. This new group is an offshoot from a mixed-media class hosted and run by Karen, owner and manager of Aztec Threads in Smallmead House. All these ladies are obviously gifted when it comes to crafts -

6

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

one member had made the most beautiful bag. However, Lorraine stresses that people of all abilities are very welcome. Her equipment is especially user-friendly, even for those with dexterity issues. For any members with specific needs, materials can be prepared for them in advance so that they have the maximum opportunity to produce their desired piece during the class. It is Lorraine’s aim to provide a safe and supported place for

local people to be creative and engage with new friends. There is a charge of £10 per session which includes materials. For each item made a duplicate will be reproduced to be donated to a charitable concern. There is definitely a therapeutic element to the classes - creating something lovely while in the company of others is a wonderful way to forget the stresses of life, build confidence and interact socially – Lorraine refers to it as ‘Papercrafting Yoga’!

New members are always welcome whatever ability, and a membership scheme is in the pipeline to offer discounts. If you fancy giving it a try yourself the following projects will be covered this month at Studio 12 on Tuesdays at 7.00pm: African Kente-style weave paper weaving (October 4th) Life and Times Scrapbook Workshop – part 2 (October11th) Birdbox Gift Box (October 18th) Organiser Wallets (October 25th) The venue is conveniently situated for transport links. Other day and evening groups are run there, see below for contact details: Papercrafting: www.madebylorraine.com/papercraft-workshop---horley.html Lorraine Castellari: 07760878276 Aztec Threads: www.aztecthreads.com

Wild in the country Horley Young Wildlife Rangers By Sarah Ballingal

I

n these days of social media, it’s not surprising to hear of youngsters using Twitter to interact with the world around them, but it’s refreshing to hear that it’s twitter of a different sort birdsong - and other wildlife behaviour that is encouraging young locals to engage with the natural world! As part of their school curriculum, pupils are bombarded with information about the negative impact that humankind is having on the planet; from climate change to species extinction, and loss of habitat to name a few. Consequently, anything that heralds hope and encourages the next generation to turn the tide is to be applauded, and Sussex Wildlife Trust is doing just that. A member of The Wildlife Trusts, the umbrella organisation for 47 local wildlife conservation charities covering the whole of the British Isles, the Sussex Wildlife Trust manages more than 30 nature reserves across the county.

Their work involves research and the protection of wildlife of all kinds. They aim to inspire and educate residents, especially the young, by creating opportunities to learn about the natural world around them and what it needs to survive. The Sussex branch already has young Wildlife Rangers groups in Brighton, Seaford and Crawley and it is currently establishing a new one closer to home in Horley. This group meets during school holidays (except Christmas) at Trinity Oaks School in Broadfield Drive. The sessions (10.30am – 2.30pm) cost £10 each (first session free) and are for young people aged 12-16 years. The next scheduled meeting is during half term on October 26th. The Wildlife Rangers are taught to observe and identify local wildlife and discover the survival issues facing so many of our native creatures. The sessions are informal, and activities are varied such as live-trapping small mammals, finding reptiles, pond-dipping, coppicing, sowing wildflowers and identifying and recording insects - my method of identifying Lepidoptera ranges from ‘Good grief!’ to ‘Aaaargh!’ I have a moth phobia.

Our familiar, much loved childhood stories often anthropomorphise animals, and as cute and charming as this can be, it’s important that in the real world children learn to appreciate the wildness of wildlife. As Rangers they learn that the natural world functions in very particular ways and has very specific needs, and what a wonderful way for them to learn. Out of the classroom and into the Great Outdoors - it’s not only wildlife that benefits, the children themselves thrive by getting fresh air and exercise as they work together, making friends and improving the natural environment and its inhabitants, not to mention the epicurean delights of campfire cook-ups, hot chocolate and biccies. Thanks to groups like this the future looks brighter for all creatures, no matter how many legs they have!

Come fly with me By Sarah Ballingal

T

here was no foreign holiday booked for me this summer, yet in late August I boarded a plane at Gatwick that transported me far away – not in miles but years! The time machine in question was an Avro Shackleton, one of the main attractions at the newly refurbished Gatwick Aviation Museum in Charlwood. As we were shown around this spectacular aircraft by ex. Shackleton pilot, Squadron Leader Mike Rankin, it wasn’t difficult to imagine what conditions were like for the 10-man crews that kept these beasts in the air as they protected the seas for 40 years from the 1950s to 1991. Mike’s vivid descriptions and reminiscences meant it was some time before our imaginations came back down to earth.

Squadron Leader, Mike Rankin

Whilst its neighbour Gatwick Airport is a place where visitors want to pass through as quickly as possible on their way to more exotic destinations, Gatwick Aviation Museum is a destination in itself, somewhere to linger and learn. The impressive Shackleton has many fascinating stable-mates on display, and it was the task of museum manager, Ashley Colella, to show us around the rest of the exhibits.

Museum Manager Ashley Colella

Ashley is the only paid member of staff at the museum, every other enthusiast working on site is a passionate volunteer who loves planes - their history, engineering, performance, and just their sheer beauty. I chatted to one young volunteer, Cameron, who helps out between his aerospace studies at Kingston University. His pleasure at being able to work alongside these icons of flight was evident, and it’s the sort of enthusiasm that would have delighted the museum’s founder, Peter Vallance. By collecting and preserving as many aircraft as he could Vallance aimed to encourage just this sort of passion in the next generation. Peter Vallance started the museum in 1991 but died in 2013 having made arrangements for the museum to be run by a charitable trust. The very first plane that Peter collected was a Sea Hawk, which stood as Gate Guardian to the estate and is now the first aircraft that greets museum visitors on entry. Previously Peter’s aircraft were outside at the mercy of the elements and consequently, there is a massive on-going restoration/conservation programme. Manager Ashley’s favourite is a Buccaneer which he is looking forward to helping restore next year. Nicknamed The Flying Coke Bottle due to its shape, it is one of only 4 Buccaneers in museums worldwide, and is the only one to have an engine that still runs!

Other highlights on show are the Lightning (AKA ‘The Homesick Angel’ due to its ability to climb at tremendous speed), the Harrier Jump Jet, the Hunter T7, The Gloster Meteor (oldest plane on display and known as ‘The Meat Box’ due to its tendency to kill off its pilots!). The Sea Vixen, Sea Prince and the Venom. The bulk of the aircraft and artefacts were collected by Vallance and others are on loan. Many are currently out of sight and will go on show as the museum develops. This wonderful museum is a hidden gem, a must-see, and don’t worry - if you don’t think you’re very interested in planes - like me, you’ll discover that you are! The museum is open from Friday – Sunday (10.00am – 4.30pm) Entry by donation - suggested £5 adult, £2.50 child (Pre-arranged tours for groups/clubs/schools, etc. are free) T: 01293 862417 Gatwick Aviation Museum, Lowfield Heath Road, Charlwood RH6 0BT W: www.gatwick-aviation-museum.co.uk E: office@gatwick-aviation-museum-co.uk

Music News in 2006

ontinuing our look back to 10-years-ago and the launch of Mantra Magazines, do you remember the music news hitting the headlines in 2006? Here is some of the music news you with way back then. The year was termed the Year of Mozart, marking the 250th anniversary of the birth of the legendary Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Salzburg with celebrations held throughout the year. In February The Rolling Stones give a free concert to two million people in Rio de Janeiro and the one billionth song was downloaded on iTunes.

The one billionth song? Speed of Sound by the band Coldplay. History was made when James Blunt, with You're Beautiful, became the first British artist to top the US Billboard Hot 100 chart since Elton John with Candle in the Wind in 1997 - almost nine years earlier. On July 30, further history was made when the last ever weekly edition of the BBC TV chart show, Top of the Pops, was broadcast after more than 42 years on the air bowing out with dwindling viewing figures. And finally… The UK Christmas number one in 2006 was Leona Lewis’ A Moment Like This.

Miss Pole Dance UK 2016 People with a passion for Pole Dancing! By Rachel Whitlam

T

he Hawth, Crawley will host the official UK National Pole Dance Professional Championships on Saturday 8th October. Focussing entirely on athletic skills of dance and fitness, there will be high-flying gymnastics and breathtaking performances. This year sees the celebration of 16 years of events as the UK’s Number one Pole performers compete for the title of Miss Pole Dance UK. Crawley based, international business woman, health and fitness expert, Kay Penney explains how dispelling some of the ‘myths’ around Pole Dance has been no easy task. Mother of three, Kay has dedicated the last fifteen years to getting her pole programs into the gyms of Crawley and far beyond. She currently has more than three thousand active students, spreading around the globe from Russia, Hungary, China, Germany, Turkey and most recently, Romania. Kay created Pole Passion and Miss Pole Dance UK in an attempt to educate and change public perception in this sometimes misunderstood sport. “It’s not as easy as it looks. However, anyone can do it with dedication and practice and no prior dance fitness or acrobatic experience. Naturally, those elements help. However, they are not important to join a class and succeed. Each hour-long lesson is never the same and each

student’s journey is different depending on their flexibility, confidence, determination and passion.” Kay has been offering classes since 2004, when she set up in Brighton with a view to empowering women, initially for fitness, confidence and a fun way to keep fit. She identified the fitness potential early on when she was searching for something new and exciting to get her pre-baby body back in shape. This led to her developing new techniques on and around the pole, also inspired by her love of music and the arts. Since that time, Kay has mentored over 800 instructors and thousands of students, which have included able-bodied people as well as disabled students. Kay said, “Both mentally and physically, I do see the pole as a rehabilitation tool as well as a dance partner and the use of the pole far surpasses any piece of gym equipment.” After two years of research in the early 2000’s, inspired by exotic dancers and performers of London’s gentlemen’s clubs, she opened her pole school and beauty salon in Brighton. Four years later, Miss Pole Dance UK was born. Initially promoting ambitious and talented performers, there was an increase in the younger clientele including gymnasts and circus acrobats followed by ‘normal’ everyday women who began to be

attracted to the pole. Initially viewed as a ‘female’ interest, it seems that men are now getting on board also. Fitness and strength conditioning enthusiasts, care workers, mechanics, lawyers to airline pilots, there is no stereotypical person as the fitness environment has made it acceptable to everyone. Kay said, “It’s still very much a female friendly atmosphere although there is an increase in demand from male students and instructors who seem to have that initial strength to spot and support students through the more challenging techniques.” Despite the extreme nature of hanging from extremities and flying through the air at competition level, unlike similar sports of gymnastics and trampolining, there are very few injuries. Kay and her team are excited to be returning to the Hawth for the fourth year. “It is the perfect theatre to display the seven-hour long

competition with its high energy, and upbeat ‘Britain’s got talent’ type performances. The competition starts at 3pm and will include Mr Pole Fitness UK, Miss Pole Dance UK Doubles and Miss Pole Dance UK Singles. Tickets are now on sale from the Hawth Box Office and Miss Pole Dance UK website. www.misspoledance-uk.com and www.hawth.co.uk For more information and lessons, please visit www.polepassion.com

Charity begins at home Sullivan’s Heroes

Sullivan’s Heroes charity was set-up in 2014 by husband and wife Richard and Fiona Smith who live in Turners Hill, with the charity’s website officially launched and operational in February this year. By Jacob White

F

iona and Richard set-up the charity after going through the process of adapting their house for their disabled son Sullivan, and discovering there was little in the way of financial assistance towards this, where the costs are in excess of a Disabled Facilities Grant awarded. Tragically, after subsequently fundraising efforts themselves through various fundraising initiatives to meet the costs required for their home adaptations, Sullivan passed away in January 2015 shortly before the adaptation work on their home was completed. Despite their loss, Fiona and Richard decided that they would set-up the charity to help and support other families going through the very arduous adaptations process for a disabled child and requiring to fundraise to meet the costs, and having nowhere to turn to for help. Fiona, said: “There are numerous families in the UK with disabled children, needing to adapt their homes to meet the child’s care and health requirements.’ “Whilst council grants may be available, in many cases these don’t fulfil the needs and additional

funds, often quite substantial, are required for the building project.” Sullivan’s Heroes offers fundraising support specifically for vital home adaptations – raising funds to provide a support platform and financial grants to help families create the optimal environment to continue to care for their disabled child at home, safely and with dignity. “If you know an individual, or a company, who is looking for a worthy cause to raise funds for, then please let them know about Sullivan’s Heroes.’ “Perhaps you know a family with a disabled child seeking to adapt their house who could benefit from the charity’s support?” Fiona added.

Can you help Sullivan’s Heroes? In addition to donating, attending a fundraising event or one of the charity’s events you can help spread the word about the work the charity does. For more information about the charity, or to make a donation please visit: www.sullivansheroes.org or, the charity’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/Sullivans-Heroes Charitable donations can be made online or by texting HERO23 £1, £2, £3, £4, £5 or £10 to 70070.

Acquainted with grief Cruse Bereavement Care

L

By Sarah Ballingal

ittle is taboo in our modern society when it comes to discussing controversial issues, yet death remains one of the few subjects that people can find hard to talk about, especially when personally affected by it. Through the media our lives are filled daily with images of death and although it is the ultimate statistic inasmuch as 1:1 of us will die, when death moves from our screens into our own lives it has the power to surprise and wound like nothing else. Such is the devastating effect that a loved one’s death can have on someone it is sometimes hard for them to know where to turn. However, caring friends and family are, their involvement is sometimes just too personal and a more neutral confidant is needed. Last year 100,000 people in the UK turned to Cruse Bereavement Care. Cruse is a nationwide organisation founded in Richmond in 1959 with the aim of promoting the well-being of the bereaved and enabling them to understand and cope with their grief. The unusual name originates from a Biblical reference in 1 Kings and refers to a widow’s cruse (a jar) which miraculously never ran out of oil. Thus the name ‘Cruse’ was chosen to signify that support would be given as long as it was needed and there would always be a drop of comfort available.

However, the charity is a non-religious organisation and support is available to everyone, regardless of belief, background or age. Support specifically for children and young people can be found on the website www.hopeagain.org.uk With Her Majesty the Queen as Patron Cruse employs 5,000 volunteers working across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The charity’s frontline is made up of fully-trained bereavement supporters who work one-to-one with clients. Also essential are those working behind the scenes with managerial, fund-raising and administrative skills. As with many charities, Cruse is dependent on funding from a generous public. Cruse makes no charge for its service; but on average it costs £180 to support one client – a relatively small sum making such a big difference. They help many clients annually, many of whom are referred by their GP, although many more learn of the service by personal recommendation from friends. The service is completely confidential and available in clients’ homes, and links are made with other charities, agencies and resources as appropriate. For further information on Cruse nationally and in your local area visit www.cruse.org.uk

The Cranston Library A 21st century home owner moves into a Reigate cottage and discovers a dusty old book in the attic. Conscientiously he tries to return it:

‘I’ve found this library book...’ ‘At last! That’ll be a £20,000 fine’. By Sarah Ballingal

T

his image crossed my mind when I visited The Cranston Library in St Mary Magdalene Church, the first ever lending library in England, which opened its doors - or rather, door - in 1701. Three centuries later that very door is still in situ bearing the initials of its founder, Andrew Cranston, and proclaiming ‘Animi Alimentum’ (Nourishment of the Mind) which was the reverend’s intention for his small but perfectly formed bibliotheca. Cranston, a magnanimous Scot, was vicar of St Mary’s at the time. He started the library with 70 of his books, gradually adding more and

16

persuading others to do the same, along with financial donations. He kept meticulous records and so successful was his acquisition that six years later the library boasted 1,500 titles covering theology, travel, history, geography, science, medicine, music, mathematics and more. His original plan was a resource for clergy, but there was a keen readership amongst his parishioners, and it became available to the public. Lenders tended to be from the middle classes (the upper classes could afford books, the lower orders were often illiterate). Cranston died in 1708 but in a sense, he hasn’t left as his tomb is below it under the vestry floor. Currently hidden by carpet it bears the inscription, ‘He does not cease to speak publicly, even after death’! Just before his demise, the library became a charity with 44 trustees including gentry and humble tradesmen (Cranston was no snob). Many AWOL titles were traced and cataloguing completed. There still exists a complete list of borrowers/books from 1711 – 1920. The lending aspect ceased in the 1920s when the County Library Service was established. However, occasional donations continued, and the library is now full to bursting with 2,350 books. The earliest dates from 1200s and there are manuscripts donated by Cranston’s supporters. There is a Polyglot Bible, The Great Bible of King Henry V111 and The Bug Bible; the majority are 17th and 18th century printed books.

is on Monday 17th October, St Mary’s Church, Chart Lane (7.00pm for 7.30pm) After the Second World War, the future of the library was uncertain, but a group of concerned locals rekindled the original charitable trust and thankfully, the books were saved. The trustees did a sterling job, but it was a struggle and eventually in the 1990s the local branch of NADFAS became involved and enlisting the help of expert bookbinder, Nick Cowlishaw, they have followed a programme of cleaning, repair and cataloguing securing the library’s future!

Pre-Paid Funeral Plans – Peace of mind for you and your loved ones It goes without saying that losing a loved-one is an incredibly stressful and emotional time, with considerations such as funeral expenses often causing further concern and stress.

O

ver recent years there has been huge coverage in the media about funeral costs, which, for the last two decades, have consistently risen far in excess of the annual rate of inflation. Average funeral costs have increased from £1,230 in 1997 to over £4000 today – an increase of over 225%*. Taking out a pre-paid funeral plan fixes the cost of the funeral director’s fees and services at today’s prices, meaning whatever they cost in the future, there will never be anything additional for your family or estate to have to pay towards them. In the current period of low interest rates, many people now see the huge benefit in ‘investing’ capital into a pre-paid funeral plan instead of conventional savings accounts, given they’re a far more effective and robust means of budgeting for what is, alongside taxes, life’s only inevitable expense. In addition to helping your loved-ones in the financial sense, taking out a funeral plan also allows you to dictate the precise format of a funeral, thus alleviating any uncertainty amongst those left behind as to what you’d like the service to include. At Good Wills, we work in partnership with Safe Hands – one of the UK’s leading providers of pre-paid funeral plans.

Safe Hands Funeral Plans offer a range of five different plans to suit different tastes and budgets. Ranging in price from £1695 to £3700, all can be tailored for either cremation or burial. Safe Hands also offer a host of affordable payment terms, with interest free options available if you spread the cost over 12 or 24 months. In common with all funeral plans, the monies you pay for your Safe Hands Funeral Plan are held securely in a ring-fence trust fund, where, over the course of your lifetime, they are invested by independent, specialist, trust fund managers. Then when you pass away, the monies (including interest generated) are released from the trust and paid to a local, reputable, funeral director who then will conduct your funeral in accordance with the instructions contained within your plan. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for more information, or call Safe Hands Funeral Plans direct on 0800 917 7099 quoting Good Wills.

The Trees are magnificent and the grounds are very well kept!” - East Grinstead Horticultural Society I was even helping to train gardeners for them at the Sussex Parks Training Centre.

CHILDREN

Time to Step Up

Preparing for the next step: a parent’s guide for teenagers considering their options for further education or employment. By Shelley Welti

I

s your child leaving school next year? Are you both unsure which path to take next? We uncover all you need to know about higher education, voluntary work and employment options open to teenagers, along with some tips for creating CVs and personal statements!

Higher Education Going to university is a popular option – with over 30% of 18-year-olds being accepted onto a full-time course (according to UCAS). But just how can you choose the right course and university for your child? From personal experience, finding the perfect fit comes from researching

24

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

courses (and inspecting the structure of the course; does it cover all that you and your child want it to?) and attending open days. Go armed with plenty of questions and make sure you leave loads of time to explore the surrounding area, if your child is moving away from home. After all, university is not just about the learning but lifestyle too, and this needs to work harmoniously for your child to well and truly bloom! Before going to uni, though, your child will need A Levels or BTEC’s under their belt. Choosing where to go to get them – college or sixth form – can be challenging too. Many of our local schools have a sixth form centre, which is a fantastic option for those who don’t want too much of a change. Colleges, however, are a must for those looking for more vocational courses and provide hands-on work-related qualifications. By changing the learning environment and the people that they are socialising with after years of the same friends and routines can make them more adaptable for the challenge of university or work-life a few years later.

Voluntary Work Volunteering is a brilliant way of developing skills for the future – be it during a gap year or alongside studies or work. Many young people are understandably attracted to carrying out volunteering placements abroad, to make a difference and experience another way of life. Organisations such as Project Trust (which provides gap year opportunities for 17-19-year-old school leavers in Africa, Asia and the Americas) and the International Voluntary Service can provide information on amazing life-changing roles overseas. Closer to home, our local volunteer bureaus are a fantastic first port of call (as is do-it.org) for placements nearby.

 01342 718348

Employment Options Is your child ready to make the jump into the world of work? Help them to tailor and distribute their CV and covering letters to companies that interest them – whether there’s a vacancy or not! This keeps them one step ahead of the crowd and helps them to get their name known by a potential future employer. Online job searches and employment agencies will bring up a plethora of entry-level jobs, which could see them starting at the bottom and working their way up. If your child knows that university isn’t for them, but they still need training for their dream career, an apprenticeship is the place to start. Not only can they earn while they learn (and not require student loans to study!), but also gain all the experience they need to qualify and climb the career ladder!

5 Things to include in your CV or Personal Statement 1. It may sound simple, but don’t forget to include your name and contact details so that interested parties can get in touch! 2. Explain WHY you want to get a place on the course or why you’d be a perfect fit for the job. This tells higher education institutions and potential employers a little about you and your motivation, setting you aside from other candidates. 3. Write about not only what you’ve learnt from school, but also the things you’ve learnt outside of the classroom too! Have you volunteered? Are you part of a group or organisation? Shout about your team-working and personal skills! 4. What’s your dream role? How can your course or job that you’re applying for get you there? Explaining the bigger picture and what you’re aiming for shows that you’re determined and ready to work and achieve it! 5. Don’t just list your skills (e.g., good communicator) – expand on them, giving an example from projects or assignments you’ve completed or any part time jobs/ volunteering you’ve done. This will give the reader a full picture of your strengths.

JOIN THE COLLYER’S A-TEAM! COLLEGE OF RICHARD COLLYER EDUCATES FOR EXCELLENCE

H

orsham’s College of Richard Collyer, widely known as Collyer’s, was founded in 1532 and is one of the country’s leading sixth form colleges. As a top performing institution, the college enjoys Beacon status and an “Outstanding” rating from Ofsted. In 2016, Collyer’s once again achieved excellent exam results. Principal, Sally Bromley said: “We are extremely proud to be a high achieving Sixth Form college and I’m delighted that Collyer’s continues to provide a free

and outstanding educational platform for young people across the region. We warmly welcome students from Horsham, Crawley, Dorking, Haywards Heath and the surrounding areas.” With a superb reputation across the South of England, Collyer’s continues to build on success and boasts new cutting edge facilities in sport and a state of the art performance venue. An upgrade of the Library was completed in August and the new £2m Graham Baird Building opened last May.

Sally Bromley added: “A quality education remains a top priority and our teachers and support staff continue to serve the region admirably. It is no surprise that we attract students from across the south east of England and internationally!”

HOMES

Changing Rooms – Accessorise for the Season If you’re the type of person who quickly becomes bored with your living space, then accessorising for the seasons is perfect for you, and your bank balance. From bright and airy for spring and summer to warm and cosy for autumn and winter, here’s a look at how to create the perfect atmosphere for your home by ringing the changes with accessories. By Nikki Relffe-Arnold Colour The simplest way to start is to choose a colour for each season. For spring think fresh colours such as bright greens, yellow or lemon shades. Summer hues include blue, stripes in nautical or ice-cream colours, as well as pinks and corals. For Autumn go for rich oranges, greens and browns and moving into Winter choose whites, reds and burgundy, golds and silver.

Soft Furnishings For the speediest update to a room, change the cushions on your soft furnishings. Not only colour, but the texture will have an impact here. Move from lighter weight fabrics for spring and summer such as silk, cotton or linen, to heavier fabrics such as chenille or wool for the autumn and winter months. Similarly, with throws, light cotton throws are perfect during spring and summer when the sun goes down, and you need to take off the chill off of the evenings. Once autumn arrives swap them for sumptuous chenille, crocheted, or cable knit throws to snuggle under.

draughts out and the heat in – go for velours, velvets or damasks. Flooring While laminate or wooden flooring is perfect for the Spring and Summer months on its own, the addition of a cotton rug will always brighten up the room. To ring the changes for the autumn and winter seasons, swap it out for a luxuriously deep pile rug for instant cosiness (and warmer toes!)

Windows Light floaty curtains made from voile or very sheer cotton will give light and an instant lift a room as Spring arrives and moves into summer, but Autumn and Winter will demand fabrics which will keep

Lighting Nothing beats natural light, but even in the spring and summer months, you’ll need some artificial light in the later evenings. Use table lamps with shades in pale colours to maximise light. For the autumn and winter months, just change the shades to darker, more luxurious hues to create an atmosphere of opulence and warmth. Bits and Pieces Candles are a year-round favourite, but can still be themed to conjure up the fragrance of the season. Some of our favourites are made by Heyland & Whittle, (www.heylandandwhittle.co.uk)

a local company who make candles with exquisite fragrances such as Green Tea, Clementine & Prosecco, Neroli & Rose, Olive & Fig or the Orient Range to take you right through the year.

Fill vases with fresh flowers throughout the year – every season has an abundance of flowers to offer from daffodils in spring to poinsettias in deep reds for the festive season. If fresh flowers aren’t in your budget every week, then scour meadows or hedgerows for wildflowers, fruits or fresh foliage for your displays. For little expense you can create a seasonal set of accessories, which should last you for years and as they’re only used for one season a year you’re much less likely to get bored with them. For more inspiration, Pinterest www.pinterest.com has endless ideas for seasonal décor.

GARDENS

Embracing Evergreens If you love your garden but don’t have the ability, time or inclination for tending it, then designing an evergreen garden is the perfect solution. Evergreens are a lot more versatile and considerably more attractive than you may have realised. By Nikki Relffe-Arnold

T

here are many reasons that might lead us to consider a low maintenance garden; with increasingly busy lives, or as we get older, we don’t have the ability to do quite as much in the garden. It’s worth looking at how we can adapt them to give just as much pleasure, but without the back-breaking work of maintaining them. An evergreen garden will give you year-round colour, as well as adding structure to your garden. Plants can be used as hedging, edging, screening or specimen plants to create a garden for every occasion. Create Privacy To create a living screen or fence for your plot then Conifers, Yew, Juniper, Holly, Boxwood, Photinia (and if you have lots of space), Rhododendrons are perfect plants choices. If you want (or need!) an instant hedge it is now possible to buy boxwood plants, clipped in a rectangular or square shape, which give a mature hedge instantly when planted!

‘Atropurpurea’ (Dark purple-flowered periwinkle) which bears beautiful deep purple flowers to give a burst of colour to your borders. Make an Entrance Junipers planted on both sides of your gateway or access to your path will give a bolder, more formal feeling. They will, however, need annual pruning! If space is limited, define your doorway or path with containers planted with Bay laurels. Add Colour Of course, many evergreens also bear flowers! To add more colour to your garden throughout the seasons, mix in Camellias, Pieris, Rhododendrons, Abelias and Daphne with your non-flowering structural plants to add interest and drama. Add Fragrance For year round foliage with the added bonus of fragrance choose aromatic herbs such as Rosemary, Thyme, Marjoram, or Lavender.

Go to Ground To minimise the need for weeding plant evergreen ground covering plants and shrubs such as Euphorbia, Hebe ‘Pagei’ or Vinca minor

40

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

With your low maintenance garden created it’s time to sit back and relax, and enjoy your garden from the comfort of your chair safe in the knowledge that it is (almost) looking after itself!

PET CARE

Doggy Daycare By Shelley Welti ll dog owners know that leaving our ‘best friends’ for over four hours is not recommended. This is not just for their safety – or to prevent your home becoming a giant chew toy – but for their well-being too. So what can we do to make sure our canine companions stay happy and in perfect health?

A

Doggy Date Lunch Break One easy way to ensure our pooches aren’t left alone all day is by popping home at lunchtime, for a quick walk. It’s not just our dogs that benefit from the interaction, but us too, especially on days when we’re feeling stressed at work, as studies have shown that playing with or petting an animal can increase levels of the stressreducing hormone oxytocin. Pooch-Friendly Neighbour If getting home during an hour-long lunch break just isn’t an option, ask a neighbour or family member, who loves your dog to drop-by for

walks or interaction! For those who are retired or living alone, this social communication can add a spring to their step! WALKIES… with a dog walker There’s been a surge in the rise of professional dog walkers and sitters. The walkers/sitters will come to your home, check up on your pooch and take them on a walk; giving you peace of mind. All Day Care Once a luxury, doggy day care has become more and more popular with us dog-lovers who want the best for our pets! Care providers usually pick up pooches in the morning (or you can drop them off on the way to work!) and then treat them to an action-packed full day before you return home for the final walk of the day!

MOTORING

Are You Winter Ready? The nights are beginning to draw in meaning only one thing – winter is on its way. Ensure your car is winter-ready by making, or asking your local garage to make these checks. By Ben Morley Battery In the winter, batteries are the most common reason a car won’t start. Once five-years-old, they can often struggle to turn the engine over for long before giving up. Ask your garage to test the battery and, if necessary, get it replaced. Screen Wash This should be around 50% concentrate during the winter to stop it freezing, and it’s worth making sure that what’s used is good quality. It’s surprising at how fast you can get through screen wash in the winter. Windscreen and wipers Keep them clean on the inside and the outside and make sure that the wiper blades are in good condition, too. Winter sun can dazzle.

Tyres While the legal limit is 1.6mm, you want at least 3mm of tread on your tyres for winter. Consider a switch to winter tyres - these are designed to work in lower temperatures and do. Locks and door seals If you’re still using a key rather than a push of a button, it’s worth giving your locks a squirt with some WD-40 to help stop them freezing. It’s also worth making sure you’ve always got at least quarter of a tank of fuel in the car. Also, have a rug, some carpet or cardboard to stick under the wheels should you get stuck in the snow, a reflective jacket, a torch, extra screen wash, some de-icer, some snacks, and even a tow rope. It’s better to be safe than sorry!

HEALTH

Healthcare at Home

Whether you are recuperating, don’t have transport or just prefer to receive treatment at home, many healthcare providers will now visit you at home. The range of healthcare providers and alternative therapists that now offer the opportunity for you to receive treatments at home has grown in recent years – you are no longer restricted to just having a mobile hairdresser, whatever service you require there’s probably a provider who will visit you rather than you having to venture out. By Nikki Relffe-Arnold Osteopaths What do they do? Osteopaths treat a large range of health problems, from back pain and postural problems caused by work strain or driving, to minor sports injuries and issues with arthritis or pregnancy. What to expect? A first appointment will last around 45 minutes to an hour, which will allow the osteopath to ask questions about your condition, your medical history and any medication you may be taking. They will then carry out a thorough examination, including asking you to make simple movements and stretches to assess your posture and mobility. From this appointment, they will determine any ongoing treatment plan with you. Treatments are hands-on involving skilled manipulation of the joints and spine and massaging of the soft tissues. They may recommend self-help exercises and offer advice to prevent recurrence or worsening of the symptoms. For more information visit www.osteopathy.org.uk

Audiologist What do they do? An audiologist can diagnose, manage and treat hearing, tinnitus or balance problems by using technology and procedures to determine the extent of any hearing damage and identify the underlying cause. What to expect? The audiologist will begin with taking a full medical history from you. They will then conduct a comprehensive test of your ears before carrying out other tests with audiometers, computers and other devices to assess the extent of hearing loss. There are many causes of hearing loss from a build-up of wax in the ears to age-related hearing loss, and the audiologist will be able at the end of your appointment to discuss their findings and decide on a treatment plan for you. This may be as simple as arranging for you to have wax removed from your ear canals, to fitting hearing aids. For more information www.hearinglink.org

FOOD AND DRINK

Christmas Party Planning

Festive food and fizz ideas to make your party go with a bang! By Shelley Welti

T

he most wonderful time of the year is just around the corner and for many of us, one of the best things about the festive period is all the fizz and food on offer! So much so, that us Brits spend £6.4 billion pounds on our supermarket food shopping alone, in the run up to the big day! Whether you’re hosting at home, or planning a spectacular feast for work friends, here are our top tips for making sure your party food starts celebrations in delicious style! Hostess with the Mostess Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year – there are presents to buy, loved ones to see and social occasions to plan, but that shouldn’t put you off opening up your home and hosting a festive get-together. By keeping it simple, you can keep any unnecessary pre-Christmas stress at bay and just enjoy spending time with your nearest and dearest. A buffet, where everyone can help themselves is one of the easiest ways to cater for all and also means that you don’t spend all of your time in the kitchen cooking up a three course feast. Instead, you can mingle, keep glasses filled and be the hostess with the mostess! As well as favourites such as cheeseboards and crackers, vol-au-vents and pork pies, mix up your buffet with new flavours including hummus and carrot sticks, falafels and Spanish-inspired meat platters. Don’t forget that some of your guests may have dietary requirements – perhaps they may be gluten free, vegetarian or vegan? If so, don’t panic! Crudités and homemade dips are a safe option, and you can now pick up a fantastic range of free-from products from most supermarkets too. To save yourself baking and creating lots of desserts, try this month’s delicious recipe (spiced orange and almond cake), which is suitable for most guests (bar those with a nut allergy). Drinks-wise, buy beers in for the boys, and if you really fancy wowing your lucky guests whip up

a refreshing Bellini. No-one need know that it’s as simple as mixing 50ml of peach puree with 100ml of cold prosecco! Aromatic mulled wine and bucks fizz are always favourite festive tipples! Party Planning Extraordinaire Been tasked with planning the all-important office do? It’s time to get cracking! To make sure as many people can attend, discuss a few date options, well in advance so that babysitters can booked and other plans don’t get in the way. Don’t forget to ask for suggestions on where people like to go and focus your restaurant search nearest the area where most party-goers live; guests can then easily attend together and order taxis or arrange lifts to avoid driving. The majority of our local restaurants and hotels have a tempting array of set festive menus and some even offer festive entertainment which help to make budgets and the celebrations - stretch further. However, if an evening do is out of the question (we all know just how busy the weeks leading up to Christmas are, after all), don’t despair. There are plenty of lunchtime options too; be it heading out for lunch (set menus are even more reasonable during the daytime!) or organising a professional catering company to deliver a delicious banquet to the office, there really is a plethora of choices for creating a works party to remember!

Half-Term Spooktacular!

This October enjoy the fright of your life with our list of spookythemed events and ideas to make your Halloween spooktacular! By Jacob White

O

ctober 31st has long been a celebration of the ghoulish and the ghostly, a tradition dating back around 2,000 years with origins in the old Celtic festival of Samhain, which celebrated the end of the harvest. Today, Halloween is a firm fixture in the British calendar after being a long-term mainstay in the US.

The Gaelic people believed that if the crops weren’t harvested on time, then the dead would come back to life to destroy what was left and wreak havoc – if you’re looking for some gruesome events and ideas we’ve got a list of spooktacular events going-on in Sussex and Surrey and things you can do at home.

A terrifying two for you! Arundel Halloween The Wildlife and Wetlands Trust in Arundel, West Sussex is organising some interesting and creepy Halloween events during the half term break. For more information, visit: www.wwt.org.uk/martinmere/

Halloween Shriek Week at Drusillas Park Drusillas Park in Alfriston, East Sussex has some innovative and engaging Halloween activities for children during its Shriek Week. For more information, visit: www.drusillas.co.uk/
