ontinuing our look back to 10-years-ago and the launch of Mantra Magazines, do you remember the tech trends of 2006? Here is some of the techy news hitting the headlines way back then.

Notable releases of the year included Play Station 3 from Sony and the Nintendo Wii – both released in the month of November in the all-important run-up to Christmas and peak sale period.

The Japanese tech giant Nintendo was busy back in 2006, as well as the Wii they also released the Nintendo DS Lite – a slimmer, lighter version of their popular original Nintendo DS.

The First Tweet Ever Other tech news in 2006, Twitter, do you tweet?

In July, the first tweets were sent with the launch of the 140-character blogging service. Today, more than 400 million Tweets are sent every day.

In tech business news the popular search engine Google acquired what was then a newcomer to the video sharing market YouTube for around $1.65billion – just imagine its network today!

The Caribbean comes to Horley Cricket Club!

Forget visiting the Caribbean this summer, as Horley Cricket Club’s hosting a very special seasonal event, bringing the idyllic islands vibe to the town. With reggae, BBQ jerk chicken and of course; cricket – things are looking hot, hot, hot this month at Horley Cricket Club!

On Sunday 12th June, Horley Cricket Club will be welcoming their members for their annual Reggae Cricket event, where they will pay no entry for a fantastic afternoon’s entertainment!

Watch a fantastic match and enjoy a traditional Caribbean BBQ, along with drinks and music.

Whatever the weather; the Caribbean atmosphere will most certainly be heating things up in Horley!

“The aim of our Reggae Cricket event is to have a bit of a party in the sun!” Paul Woodburn Secretary for the historic Horley Cricket Club, explains. “We also want to raise money for charity.”

“There will be plenty of cricket action, with an emphasis on fun! We hope that there will be lots of sunshine, good cricket and Caribbean food!”

Founded in 1792, Horley Cricket Club is a longstanding group which not only focuses on encouraging community members to play sport in a welcoming and safe environment (the club has cricket as well as hockey and squash sections), but also provides a thriving social calendar with events such as quiz nights, cheese and wine nights, beer festivals and days like the Reggae Cricket celebration throughout the year.

The Club who have been running the event for the last few years hope that members new and old, will join them for another afternoon of relaxed vibes, delicious food and cricket!

Caring for Horley’s environment

By Shelley Baker To celebrate World Environment Day on Sunday 5th June, we uncover just what one Horley environment group gets up to conserve our town. Find out exactly how we can get hands-on ourselves...

T

he Horley Conservation Group manage Tanyard Meadows and many other open spaces throughout the town, aiming to conserve them for future generations to enjoy.

The voluntary group was set up in 2014 by the Gatwick Greenspace Partnership (GGP), with support from Horley Town Council and Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, to improve the existing green spaces in and around Horley and to help manage the Riverside Green Chain.

“There is a growing army of volunteers up and down the country who are generously donating their time to help manage their local green spaces,” Kevin Lerwill, People and Wildlife Officer, from Gatwick Greenspace Partnership says.

“Not only do volunteers help our native wildlife by improving and managing those green spaces, but there are also many benefits for the volunteers themselves, such as regular exercise, regular social contact with like-minded people (which often creates strong friendships), a sense of job satisfaction and a chance to learn more about the wildlife that they are helping.

“Volunteers are essential (especially in a time of economic cuts for local authorities) for all sorts of tasks, such as coppicing, hedge laying, planting new trees and removing human rubbish, and these tasks are carried out on a regular basis to ensure that we all still have the local green spaces that we treasure and enjoy and allows our wildlife to still have a home and a place in our lives” Over the next few months, the group will be meeting monthly at Church Meadow (Sunday 12th June), Riverside Garden Park (Saturday 16th July) and Burstow Stream (Sunday 14th August) to help to conserve the area.

“The monthly volunteer tasks are open to anyone in Horley (and beyond) and it would be great to see some new faces helping out this summer!” Kevin adds.

What’s it like to be a Radio Presenter?

Many of us dream of being a radio presenter; interviewing the stars and playing our favourite tunes... but what’s it really like to be a DJ? We had a chat with presenter Chris Oxlade from newly launched local station Runway Radio to uncover all…

Hi Chris!

How did your career start?

I was a member of Hospital Radio Crawley in the mid 80’s as a teenager and got the radio bug. I gained work experience at Radio Mercury during my A-levels for two weeks and then worked on their outside broadcast rig, working in promotions and the Ultimate Request Show for a year, then at the end of my A-levels I was offered a full-time job. I’ve now been a DJ for 27 years.

You’ve had a long and varied career spanning almost three decades and interviewed many celebrities.

Who has been the most memorable?

I interviewed Take That when I started at Mercury in 1991.

They were really nice guys and really young! I’ll never forget getting a package in the post with a woman’s tooth in to give to Robbie Williams! Dawn French is also absolutely lovely – she’s exactly as you imagine. Ruby Wax is a laugh too!

How has the role changed over the last 27 years?

The basics are the same; you’re still in a small room, just chatting. But technology has come a long way!

When I started, vinyl was just coming out and there were ten different machines all running different programs, now everything’s done on a computer. Celebrities also had to come into the studio with you, but now there’s the internet allowing you to do interviews/live links instead.

When and why did you join new station Runway Radio?

I joined Runway Radio from the start and was lucky enough to be the first presenter on air on February 1st this year.

Crawley and the surrounding areas has sorely missed having its own radio station since Mercury went in 2010 and it was an ideal chance to go back to do what I love.

What sorts of things do you do in a normal day as a presenter?

I get up at 4:45am and I’m in the studio for 5:30am.

I’ll do a little more prep (I start this at home) and then I’m on air between 6am – 10am. It goes really quick! I’ll then write blog posts for the website, before heading off to my own office (I run a social media company, as well as being a councillor for Bewbush and Ifield West and Chair of Crawley Open House). Every day is really different, it’s just about learning to be flexible!

What can we expect to hear during your programme?

We’ll give you all the news and travel information to get your day started. As a station focusing on Crawley and the Gatwick areas, you can’t get much more localised information about what’s going on where you live!

What has been your career highlight so far?

My highlight at Runway has to be being the first presenter on-air, it was a great morning launching the station.

What do you enjoy most about being a DJ? Runway is at the heart of the community. Being born and bred in Crawley, it is great to once again support local community events, charities and groups by pushing them on-air.

What’s the worst thing about it?

The early starts!

And finally; what would you say to those who want to become a DJ? Any top tips?

Get as much experience as you can and keep at it! It’s a difficult industry to get into, but well worth it when you do.

Charlwood’s right royal knees-up

By Shelley Baker On Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th June, Charlwood residents will be putting up the bunting and throwing a knees up, fit for the Queen - to commemorate Her Majesty’s 90th birthday!

T

he celebration is for all Charlwood and Hookwood residents and their families to enjoy and has been largely funded by the John Bristow and Thomas Mason Trust – a registered charity covering Charlwood, Hookwood and Lowfield Heath.

Lucky RH6 residents can expect to see a living memorial be unveiled in the Millennium Field, a history display of Charlwood from the past ninety years, along with a flower festival in St Nicholas’ Church, plus entertainment for the kids (and big kids amongst us!) including a Teddy Bear’s Picnic andtraditional summer fete games, Music can be enjoyed from 1920 (when the Queen was born) right up until the present day,with live bands continuing to play into the evening. A commemorative church service will be held on the Sunday (in St Nicholas’) and will end on a high with a sharing lunch – with localsaged 90 and over being special guests.

So if you live in the parish, put your other plans on hold and join in with the community spirit!

One thing’s for sure; Charlwood most certainly knows how to put on a ‘do’!

“The event will start with the unveiling of a living statue before processing along The Street to The Glebe for a Teddy Bear’s Picnic, games and races before a musical review of 90 years and live music to round off the day,” proud local resident and event organiser Penny Shoubridge, explains.

Charlwood most certainly knows how to put on a ‘do’!

“Sunday will see a special church service followed by a lunch with invited guests of honour – all of those in our parish aged 90 and over!”

During the weekend-long festival of fun, a beacon will also be lit in The Glebe, as part of the national celebrations throughout the country. Lighting the sky and communities, beacons have been traditionally lit to mark royal jubilees, weddings, coronations and special birthdays, for hundreds of years and will really add an extra sense of occasion to Charlwood’s proceedings.

“With so much happening in one weekend, it’s a celebration not to be missed. Come on, join the fun - it’s a right royal ‘do’ - Charlwood style!”

Horley’s Community Carnival Returns

Cancel your plans for Saturday 18th June – Horley Carnival is back and promises to be bigger and better than ever! We went behind the scenes with Councillor Mike George to find out all you need to know about this year’s FREE community fun day!

B

etween 12-5pm, Horley Recreation Ground will once again become a hub of activity, as the big community get-together gets underway.

In-keeping with Carnival tradition, a procession from Victoria Road will start proceedings with a big and colourful bang!

“The parade promises to be the biggest so far with up to twenty-one organisations and groups already signed up to take part including four bands,” the organiser told us.

“It will set off from the Victoria Road car park at 12:30pm travelling along the same route as previous years. It is planned to increase the number of awards for the best floats in the fancy dress competition (which will be judged at the same time as the floats). Another change will see two of the bands performing, before the arrival of the parade, in front of the Jack Fairman and the pedestrian precinct!”

This year’s theme is Through the Ages and Beyond - giving plenty of scope for floats and fancy dress ideas!

On arrival at the Recreation Ground, the Carnival will really get underway; with a packed programme of events including workshops from Berekaz Circus, a birds of prey display, Punch and Judy shows and a fairground (open from Friday evening).

Stalls from local groups and organisations will also add to the atmosphere and for the first time in the community Carnival’s four year history; a prize will also be awarded for the best decorated stall!

“The Carnival is the result of the hard work over many months by several community groups and we hope that the residents of Horley and the surrounding areas continue to show their enthusiasm and support for their Carnival,” Cllr Mike George, said about the event that normally sees up to 7,000 visitors attend.

Five fab reasons to get involved this Volunteers Week

Between 1st – 12th June, local volunteers and the amazing roles they play in our communities will be celebrated, throughout Volunteers Week 2016.

But why is volunteering so beneficial and why should you get involved?

Here’s five good reasons to give something back to your community: 1. Meet new people For both young and old people alike, loneliness is an issue affecting thousands of us throughout the country.

Volunteering presents the opportunity to meet and form friendships with other people, whom you may not have otherwise met. Whether that’s with a fellow volunteer or with those you meet in your new role, socialising with others can bring confidence and an injection of fun as well as new possibilities into your life!

2. Learn new skills and increase employability A recent survey of some of the UK’s leading businesses found that 73% would employ someone who has volunteered over someone that hasn’t.

This could be down to the diverse range of skills gained from volunteering – including; leadership and team building, communicating, problem solving, adaptability, time management and so much more. So, if you’re looking to add more to your CV, volunteering could be a fantastic step!

Taking centre stage…

Staging a show in the medieval grandeur of the Garden of England

Taking place in the A23 Horley Recreation Ground, on Saturday 18th June, Horley Carnival will again be free to enter, thanks to the very generous support from our Borough Councillors and Gatwick Airport Ltd., and will run from 12.00 pm to 5.00 pm.

Judging of the fancy dress and the carnival floats will be carried out by the Mayors of Reigate & Banstead and Horley.

For the first time there will be a prize for the best stall supporting the Carnival theme.

A new attraction will be Bezerkaz Circus who will be running two workshops for children as well as doing a display in the arena.

There will be the usual selection of community and commercial stalls along with a range of catering outlets.

Returning by popular demand will be the Owls about Town, the Punch and Judy and the miniature railway whilst the fairground will be open from the Friday evening.

There will be a full programme of arena events starting at 12.00 pm.

A limited amount of space will be available on the ground for disabled parking but the car park will not be available from the previous evening and Saturday whilst the Carnival is underway.

The Carnival is the result of the hard work over many months by several community groups and we hope that the residents of Horley and the surrounding areas continue to show their enthusiasm and support for their Carnival.

What better than going-out and picking your own? The best of the fruit this month is cherries and berries...

Last year, scientists at the Oregon Health and Science University in the US claimed eating cherries helped athletes recover from exercise pain.

55 runners were found to experience less pain after training if they had drank cherry juice. Good to know! Cherries, should be picked when they are of maximum size, if they are picked before they are fully mature they will not ripen off the tree.

Cherries keep longer if the stems remain attached and can be stored in the refrigerator to be enjoyed for two to three days after.

Blueberries A true favourite of our American cousins, the fruit which is so often deliciously served in a muffin or with a pancake, is only ripe when easy to pick – if they show resistance, they simply aren’t ready. Another tell-tell sign if the blueberry isn’t ripe is a red ring around the top of the berry where the fruit is attached to the stem. After picking, cool blueberries as quickly as possible to around or 1.5°C or 35°F.

Blackberries Pick blackberries as they become soft - it is best to pick early in the day because the berries do not spoil as quickly as those picked in the afternoon. Not many people know that!

Blackberries that are picked at the proper time of day and season, handled carefully, and then stored in a cool place will stay in good condition for several days after.

Strawberries Often-ranked as Britain’s favourite fruit, the strawberry is synonymous with the month of June - a staggering 27,000 kilos of strawberries are eaten at the Wimbledon Championships alone, together with 7,000 litres of cream! It is best to pick strawberries in the morning when the berries are cool and the berry should be picked with the stem attached by grasping the stem between the thumb and forefinger and pinching it off of the main plant.

For best storage, keep strawberries at a temperature below 4.5°C or 40°F.

This cold-weather pudding has been transformed into a sunshine treat with these sweet, fruity summer flavours.

Preparation time:15 minutes Cooking time: 45 minutes Total time:1 hour Serves: 6

Ingredients 400g Waitrose Cooks’ Ingredients Forced Rhubarb, cut into 3cm lengths 400g essential Waitrose British Strawberries, hulled and halved 2 star anise 75g Waitrose Light Brown Soft Sugar Grated zest and juice of 1 large orange For the topping: 150g porridge oats 100g plain flour 100g chilled butter, diced 2 tbsp clear honey 100g Waitrose Light Brown Soft Sugar 50g Waitrose Roasted Chopped Hazelnuts Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180ºC, gas mark 4.

Place the rhubarb, strawberries, star anise, sugar, orange zest and juice in a large ovenproof dish.

2. Place the oats, flour and butter in a bowl then, using your fingertips, rub in the butter until it resembles breadcrumbs.

Add the honey, sugar and hazelnuts then rub together to form small clumps.

3. Scatter the oaty crumble over the fruit.

Sit the dish on a baking sheet in the oven and cook for 45 minutes until the fruit is tender, bubbling around the edges and the top is crunchy and golden brown.

National Smile Month, organised by the independent charity Dental Health Foundation is a chance to take a refreshed look at our oral health, learn more about why a healthy smile is so important and share tips on how to improve and maintain a healthy smile which will make you feel and look good.

Dentists say there are three key principles to developing great oral health; brush your teeth at least twice a day, visit your dentist regularly and limit your intake of sugary foods and drinks - these are a very good starting point for a healthy smile.

Maintaining good oral health is a fairly simple task.

Failure to maintain good oral health over a long period of time can sometimes lead to unnecessary, invasive and expensive treatment. Poor oral health can lead to direct problems such as gum disease and tooth decay as well as indirect problems such as an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes.

The benefits of developing and maintaining a healthy smile are clear. By following some simple rules you can bring about some remarkably positive differences to many aspects of your life - from improved self-confidence to career and relationship success, a healthy smile can truly transform you!

Plotting a vegetable garden

Even the smallest garden can find space to grow vegetables. Start now and you can enjoy delicious home-grown salads all summer long.

P

roducing useful quantities of your own vegetables doesn’t take up as much space as you might imagine. There’s a lot you can plant out or grow from seed right now that will give you some super-tasty, succulent, and top-quality salads in just a few weeks’ time.

Before you get sowing or planting, choose the right containers. Big ones are easier to maintain than small ones; and of course bigger pots mean more produce. Go for something of at least 30cm (12in) in diameter, larger if possible.

As salad crops tend to be pretty short-term there’s no need to spend a fortune on compost.

Ideally choose a good-quality multi-purpose compost but you can get perfectly acceptable results with the contents of a growing-bag.

I find the quality of the compost in these isn’t all that brilliant, but if it’s well-fertilised, it will be adequate.

If you grow your own salad leaves you can get precisely the mix you like best. There are plenty of eye-catching lettuces such as the frilly Lollo or the gorgeous burgundy-tinged Lollo Rosso. Treat them as cut-and-come-again crops, snipping off the leaves as you want them but not cutting into to the base, then they’ll put out new shoots and keep cropping for longer.

Baby beet leaves are a popular salad ingredient too. Choose a variety like Bull’s Blood for the prettiest leaves or grow any of the standard varieties, and you’ll also get a great-tasting root crop later on. I generally harvest the young leaves a few at a time but let the plant produce a root too.

When buying tomato plants, hunt carefully to find the ones that are still in top condition. Outdoor varieties can be grown in their own pot - if you have a big enough container you can grow some other salad ingredients around the edge of the container.

Fresh herbs can make a salad more interesting too. Choose your favourites and either grow them in a dedicated herb pot with extra grit in the compost for good drainage.

Vegetables, like most plants, do best in a relatively warm spot with plenty of sun but sheltered from wind, so site your containers carefully. You may prefer to raise some of your crops in pots and grow them on a bit before planting them out. The garden containers will always be full and looking their best, even while you’re harvesting them. The new plantings will very quickly blend in with the old, and all summer long you’ll have a garden that’s pleasing to the eye.

Here are three party ideas with a difference which will make for an amazing summer birthday party without costing a small fortune!

Your guests will have a blast on your child’s special day whether they’re a wannabe detective, Olympian, photographer, super-sleuth or the next Bear Grylls...

Just weeks away from the Rio Olympics, why not bring a taste of Brazil closer to home?

If your parties have been more chore than cheer this techy party will shake things up!

Borrow a field, a playground or use the beach, split your guests into teams and host a series of Olympic events, something similar to adult circuit training you will be familiar with from your visits to the gym.

Developing children’s creativity, this party is all about capturing fun. Borrow some digital cameras, phones with cameras or, ask the kids to bring their phone or iPod with them.

Encourage them to collect things as they go - but nothing to the detriment of the environment! The collected items can be used to make a collage on your return home – time to get creative.

However, for fun turn this Olympic Party on its head make the guests run the 100 metres in wellies or some other novel way of turning the average Olympic sport into something more whacky for fun!

Split the guests into two groups, give them a camera and under adult supervision provide them with a list of landmarks or items you would like them to photograph.

At the end of the party, give everyone their collage and a magnifying glass to take home.

Don’t forget to hand out medals at the end for the best or simply the craziest achievements!

S

omeone once said that nothing in life is truly for free, and it’s said that when something seems too good to be true, it often is.

This is worth considering if you find yourself in the fortunate position of buying a brand new car and the keen salesman offers you three years fixed price, or better still – free servicing.

Sounds great - you’re driving out of the showroom in a brand new car, you’ve either paid a fixed amount for your vehicle’s servicing for the next three years, or not paid a penny for said maintenance. But consider this, you’re not getting the chance to shop around, so is that package on offer actually saving you money or is it more expensive than what you’d pay at your local garage?

If it is cheap or free, has the cost already been bundled into the price of the car anyway, giving no transparency over the true cost to you the buyer, or for you to look for better deals.

Also worth considering is that whilst servicing might be ‘free’ or pre-paid, chances are the small print will tell you that things like brakes, tyres and suspension won’t be - the dealership will need to make up the money somewhere.

It could be as simple as a ploy to get you to return to the dealership - they can wave sweet temptation under your nose for the next three years hoping you’ll again succumb to the desire to replace your car and thus start the cycle once more.

Car manufacturers have got to find ways of getting customers to keep coming back and since the warranty clause was scrapped in 2004, they can’t insist you take the car back to them to retain the warranty on your vehicle. You can instead take it to a good independent garage to have work done, usually at a fraction of the cost, without affecting the warranty the car comes with.

So while on the face of it fixed-price, or free, servicing packages seem like a great deal, it’s up to you as a buyer to decide whether the loss of choice and competition is worth it for a simple life.

The North Weald Art Group - is a society of amateur and professional artists, based in Reigate, Surrey. We meet in Reigate every month on the last Monday of the month at 7.45pm when we have demonstrations by professional artists. We also hold workshops and life-drawing sessions, and during the summer we meet at outdoor locations to paint or draw, occasionally with a costumed model. Triratna East Surrey Buddhism and Meditation Group - We meet each Tuesday

evening from 7:30 - 9:30pm at the newly refurbished Lloyd Hall in Outwood. The group is open to all (under 16’s accompanied by an adult). All that is required is an open mind. The evenings are free of charge but any donations received are used for venue hire, equipment and taking people on retreat.

Rotary Club of Reigate - Weekly lunch meetings at 12.30 every Tuesday at The Reigate Manor Hotel. Approx. 50 members organise social and fundraising activities to help local needy people and both local charities and those further afield.

Arthritis Care Support Group - support and friendship to people with all kinds of arthritis. Meet on the 4th Thurs of each month at 2.30pm at the Woodhatch Centre in Woodhatch for a speaker, tea and after the meeting anyone who wishes to can stay on and join in a gentle exercise class, the leader of which is familiar with joint problems and limitations.
