80 Years young

and attempting to beat his own skydiving world record

W

riting for RH6 Uncovered, I’m lucky to meet some truly inspirational residents. One Tuesday morning chat that will stay with me forever is the one I had with Cllr David Powell – Mayor for the Borough of Reigate and Banstead, fearless fundraiser and octogenarian.

Through laughs about his latest adventure (skydiving 30,000 ft. and falling at 300 mph), young at heart David proved you are never too old to do anything you set your mind to.

Throughout life, we can get set in our ways – especially as we get older, but that couldn’t be further from Cllr Powell’s outlook, as he attempts to beat his own world record, next month.

The 80-year-old will be once again heading to Memphis to retain his title of being the oldest person to skydive from 300,000 ft. with oxygen.

But to ‘challenge himself further’, David – also known as Percy - has decided to jump at night.

What exactly does that feel like? Of course, I just had to ask the man himself. After all, this will be his fourth skydive!

“It feels very violent,” he laughs, “There’s quite a bit of turbulence, and you freefall for two

minutes, with the air feeling like it’s trying to rip your shoulders off! It will be a full moon, so I’ll be looking at the earth through the moon!”

The adrenaline-junkie and former soldier has raised more than £10,000 for Surrey Care Trust, the Royal British Legion and YMCA through skydives and other events including rowing the Channel on a rowing machine and abseiling down Guildford Cathedral at the launch of the Poppy Appeal. He has being presented with the Top Individual Fundraiser Award by the RBL. As well as the skydive on August 18 for the RBL, our inspirational octogenarian will be abseiling down Portsmouth’s iconic Spinnaker Tower on August 27 and ‘rowing across the Channel’ again on a static rower in September there’s no signs of slowing down for David.

“When you get to 80, you need to pack it all in. I’d love to do a bungee jump, but my family and friends are sponsoring me not to do it,” the mayor of the borough laughs.

“Don’t tell my wife but, I hope to do it again in 2018 to mark the end of the First World War! You’ve got one life; you’ve got to live.”

PTA Power!

ach year across the UK, Parent Teacher Associations raise a huge £9,000 on average for their school. As school fete season is in full swing, I caught up with one Horley ‘Friends’ group to uncover all about their fundraising and how they fit in raising funds alongside a family.

Between 2014 and 2015 alone, the Friends of Horley’s Trinity Oaks C of E Primary School (known as FOTO) have raised £4,668.93 – a very impressive total for a school of just 30 pupils! This year, the charity are aiming even higher (£14,000) to raise funds for playground equipment.

“Our fundraising efforts last year included movie nights, a fish and chips quiz night, Mother’s Day pop-up shop, selling ice lollies during the summer, an Easter egg hunt and our hugely successful summer fair!’

“We have used this money to buy play equipment which includes our wooden tractor,

our wooden train, our oak leaf table and chairs and our new football goal posts,” mum of two and Chair of FOTO, Emma Connelly explains.

“This year we are aiming to raise money for a large climbing frame for the playground. To do this we are working together on our hugely popular events from last year and we’re also working on a torchlight treasure hunt around The Acres, a dads’ and kids’ camping night on the school field, a parents’ outdoor movie night, having a stall at Horley Carnival and not forgetting our hotly anticipated circus themed Summer Fair on July 2.”

This year’s fundraising fair, taking place at the school between 12.00-3.00pm, will see stalls, circus skills area, pony rides, an inflatable assault course, a visit from Dave the Minion and so much more.

“Last year’s first ever summer fair was a highlight for me,” Emma says. “It was an amazing event to organise and participate in. The parents, staff and local community all came together and made it a pleasure to work on. The sun shone, and we raised a lot of money on that day which the children are benefitting from daily!”

With jobs and families to juggle, it can understandably be difficult to do everything.

However, as Emma explains – she wanted to be able to use her professional skill set to do her bit for her children’s school: “My oldest son started the school when it first opened in September 2014, and I wanted to be involved in helping to make the school an outstanding and exciting place for the children to learn. In my job as a personal assistant, I am responsible arranging meetings, event organising and managing budgets which has all come in very helpful in Chair the FOTO. My second son starts there in September this year so I’ll have double the pressure to put on a good show!”

“I enjoy working with my amazing committee. They work morning, noon and quite literally through the night at times to make things happen and I couldn’t be prouder of what we are achieving together with the school.”

A Stunning Stomp Through Surrey

How many times have you thought about climbing to the top of Holmbury Hill, Leith Hill or Box Hill and taking in the view?

This month, you can make your thoughts a reality and conquer all three with the Surrey Three Peaks Challenge on Saturday, July 23!

iving in the area for many years, I am shocked and a little ashamed to say that I’ve only ever seen the beautiful view of sprawling Surrey countryside from Box Hill.

If like me, you’ve wanted to tick all of the county’s infamous hills of your bucket list and marvel in not only accomplishing a challenge but that breathtaking landscape too, it’s time to take on the Three Peaks Challenge.

Starting from the beautiful village of Holmbury St Mary, the walk will take in the stunning sights of the county, through ancient woodland, past rivers, ponds and waterfalls and of course; the views across our picturesque county.

Choose between 7 mile, 13 mile or 26 mile routes – the 7 mile route explores Holmbury Hill and Leith Hill, whilst the 13 mile and 26 mile routes takes on Holmbury Hill, Leith Hill and Box Hill – to really uncover the

beauty of the countryside on our doorsteps. Not only that, but you’ll be raising money for charities too.

This year’s Surrey Three Peaks charities include autism charity The Jigsaw Trust, Challengers (a disability charity based in Guildford), White Lodge Centre (a voluntary organisation supporting disabled people of all ages), the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (focusing on saving endangered species, also based in Surrey), Sight for Surrey, Woking and Sam Beare Hospices and Deaf Plus.

The longstanding event – ran

by Advocate Events for the last three years – will see up to 100 walkers of all ages and

abilities, along with dogs too, head for the Surrey Hills for a memorable day out.

“The aim is to raise as much money for local charities as possible while giving participants a tough challenge,” organiser Martyn Paul explains.

“The best thing about the Surrey Peaks are the wonderful views, the friendships made on the event and the thrill of conquering a tough challenge.

The highlight of the course/s have to be the beautiful countryside and views from Holmbury, Leith and Box Hills!”

So, if you’re inspired and ready for a stunning stomp through Surrey for a good cause, get your walking boots on and I’ll see you at the top of Box Hill!

Making Sweet, Sweet Music Didn’t get tickets to last month’s Glastonbury festival? Don’t worry music lovers, as on July 22, 23 and 24; bands of all genres will be performing in picturesque Charlwood for a music event like no other!

harlwood may be a small, quiet and tranquil village for most of the year, but for one weekend each summer, the village transforms itself into an electric and eclectic musical hub.

Whether you’re into jazz, blues or folk, the Charlwood Music Festival is most definitely the place to be. Who can resist a sip of something cool, in the sunshine, while enjoying some toe-tapping tunes?

Now in its fourth year, the three-day festival will offer something for all music tastes, as organiser Peter Barclay (known locally as PB) explains: “The rock/pop event on Friday night was so successful last year that we have to have it back!’

Our daytime concert event on Saturday in the churchyard with BBQ, cream teas and bar will be on again, and this is where our local performers can

be seen doing their individual things. On Saturday night we’ll have the Anne Odell Quartet; international jazz musicians, giving us our concert in the church itself which has fantastic acoustics!”

The event will focus on shining the spotlight onto our local bands, such as; Anne Odell Quartet, Rawbones (bluegrass), Allan Bailey’s Band (rock) and Martyn Wyndham Read (folk), spanning all musical tastes.

Understandably, this is one of the key factors that inspired PB and the other six

committee members to first host the event and still plays an important part of proceedings.

“We started the festival because we realised that we had an amazing collection of musical talent in the parish so we decided we could showcase the talent and raise some funds for community projects,” PB continues. “My favourite thing about the festival is the community coming together and recognising how much local talent we’ve got!”

If we didn’t know it already; Charlwood has most definitely got talent!

Bonjour Vimy, Horley Calling!

In 1991 Horley teacher Edith Dermaux and a like-minded French resident created the Horley-Vimy Twinning Association, with the hope of bringing people together.

By Shelley Baker ow, 25 years-on firm friendships have been formed and there’s been many visits across the channel – including one two months’ ago to celebrate the anniversary!

“The idea was to bring English and French people together, give them a chance to stay in each other’s homes to see how they live and to forge friendships, some of which have continued to this day,” President Gill Partridge, who was on the inaugural committee, says.

“But the main aim of the Twinning Association are to create a liaison between social clubs, organise children and company exchanges, unite penfriends and provide education.”

Between May 6 - 8, 20 Horley residents visited the lovely farming town, located in Northern France to celebrate the group’s longstanding connection.

Staying with French hosts, members explored Lille, enjoyed a grand soiree, attended by more than 100 people and relaxed over a buffet lunch, sharing jokes.

Sounds fantastic, doesn’t it?

Vimy residents will be travelling to Horley between October 7 - 9 to continue the anniversary festivities. Already the Horley members are planning their trip to perfection – with a tour of the Houses of Parliament, a traditional English meal and buffet lunch, all organised for the weekend.

So, what do guests from Vimy like most about Horley?

“There are usually 20-30 guests from Vimy, and they say they enjoy getting to know English families. They also like our pubs and shopping!” chair Sue Cowell says.

“Usually, they come over on a Saturday and stop somewhere en-route for us to meet them, such as Hever

Castle, Chartwell, Brighton or London. They then spend the evening with their host families.

We all meet up for Sunday lunch before their return journey. In the past when they have arrived on a Friday, they have taken part in local events like the Horley Carnival, the fireworks and Veteran Car Rally!”

“The best bit about being part of the Horley-Vimy Twinning Association is making long-lasting friendships in England and in France,” Gill, tells me.

“Everyone is welcome.

You don’t need to be able to speak French,” Sue adds.

“We would particularly like families with children to become involved.’

“Anything is Achievable.

You Just Need To Believe You Can Do It…”

hen mum of one, Ruth Warren turned 40, she decided she wanted to push herself. Bringing together her passion for Girlguiding and giving herself the ultimate challenge.

The Brown Owl from Horley, embarked on the 100km London to Brighton route, with the hope of raising funds for a cause close to her heart - we caught up with her, just before her big adventure.

Between May 28 and May 29, while most of us were enjoying a relaxed Bank Holiday weekend, Ruth was pushing herself on the gruelling London to Brighton challenge.

However, with the firm goal of raising money towards the rebuilding of the Girlguiding Surrey East’s activity site at Faurefold at Westcott, near Dorking - the Brown Owl for 5th Horley Brownies was determined to do her bit.

“You wouldn’t look at me and think I could do it, but I really want to do something to help raise money needed for the repairs,” Ruth says.

“Faurefold is a very important part of the future of Girlguiding in this area as it provides young people with the opportunity to gather together and enjoy challenges, work as a team, learn new skills through activities as members of Girlguiding and other youth organisations who use the site throughout the year.”

than 45 years and has seen many visits from Brownies and Guides, along with meetings and other activities.

However, to continue being able to host members, £400,000 is required to start the rebuild and development. £300,000 has already been raised, leaving £100,000 outstanding. Our brave Brown Owl hopes her fundraising will help towards this total.

Ever since June 2015, Ruth has been in training; getting up at 4.00am most weekends and taking on hill treks. But just how has the mum of one, who also runs a business with her husband and of course, is a busy Brown Owl, managed it? We asked her for her words of wisdom for those of us who want to challenge ourselves but are concerned about time-restraints.

“Stop what you’re doing and look at what you can achieve,” she says. “Being a mum everybody else comes before you, but you can be there – it just takes a little bit of organising! Pick something and find a way to achieve it, you can become happier, and it does get easier.’

“Never feel guilty about challenging yourself; it shows your children and others that you can achieve anything you set your mind to!”

Living with dementia

T

he term ‘dementia’ is used to describe the symptoms that occur when the brain is affected by specific diseases and conditions.

There are many different types of dementia, both inherited and non-inherited. The most common forms of dementia include Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, frontal lobe dementia and Lewy bodies.

People living with dementia can experience many different symptoms, including loss of memory, confusion, problems with speech and understanding.

These symptoms can differ from person to person depending on the type of dementia they have.

It is important to create a safe and supportive environment where people with dementia can live comfortably, maintain their independence and not feel restricted. As one of the symptoms of dementia can be confusion, it is a good idea to make everything easily recognisable. Colour contrasts are often a quick and effective way of helping areas stand out.

Surrounding a person with photos or images to trigger some of their favourite memories may also help them feel more comfortable. Reminiscence can be a great tool for therapy to help someone feel relaxed, safe and connected with the people around them.

Access to the outside space is also important as it provides the opportunity for exercise, fresh air, relieves tension and anxiety and offers personal space for reflection and privacy. Spending time outside in a garden has been shown to positively affect a person’s emotions and improve their sense of well-being.

If a person’s dementia means that they need specialist care or support and no longer wish to live independently in their own home, there are a lot of different care options available designed to meet their changing needs.

Care homes like Greenacres and Ridgemount in Banstead, for example, can provide specialist care for residents living with dementia.They have a range of distinguishing features such as additional staff with advanced dementia training and dementiafriendly design elements within the home.

Greenacres Home manager, Simanti Nadi says: “We have colleagues trained as dementia friends, including our support staff. This helps us to support the person and their symptoms as their needs continue to develop. We also hold the Forget Me Not Café on the 3rd Thursday of every month which is open to the public and allows people affected by dementia to socialise with the local community and specialists.

Our laughing yoga club and mindfulness sessions have been extremely popular activities which provide productive engagement of residents living well with dementia. It is important for us to offer a wide range of activities, and we use our customers’ life stories, likes and dislikes to help plan these.”

e’ve all heard the saying; “a dog is man’s best friend”, but in fact it seems that they, along with other pets such as cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters, form meaningful and firm friendships with our children, that can be completely life-enhancing.

As we ‘Aah’ (and reach for the camera!) while they play or take naps together, their cute bond has a deeper, positive effect on their emotional, social and physical wellbeing.

Emotional Benefits As a 14-year-old, Michael Jackson sang about his pet rat, Ben; “With a friend to call my own, I’ll never be alone, and you, my friend, will see, you’ve got a friend in me.” Family pets provide our children with a genuinely meaningful friendship that stands the test of time. Recently, a study from the University of Warwick found that 85% of children thought of their pet as a friend.

It also found that 40% of those asked would seek out their pet if they felt upset.

This could be because they can turn to their furry friend, without fear of being judged or their problems being repeated, the Pet Health Council say.

The American Center for Research explored the link between companion animals and childhood anxiety (which can significantly hinder social experiences) and found that it can be eased. The study saw lower blood pressure measures, lower heart rates and reduced behavioural distress. With anxiety now affecting 290,000 children and young people in the UK (according to mental health charity Young Minds), a pet could play a powerful part in combatting the impact it has on your child.

Physical Improvements As well as the obvious exercise benefits of walking or playing with pets, there are plenty of other reasons that they improve physical health. From hand-eye coordination (which can happen when your child scoops food into feeding bowls, for example) to reducing the risk of allergies, your pet may be helping your child’s physical development more than you think.

The Medical College of Georgia in America found that having pets decreases a child’s risk of developing certain allergies such as hay fever and house dust mites by 75%.

Preparation time: 5 minutes Serves: 2 Ingredients 200g strawberries, hulled and chopped 1 tbsp caster sugar 2 scoops Waitrose Alphonso Mango Sorbet 330ml can Cawston Press Sparkling Rhubarb

Method 1. In a jug, stir the gin and ginger together, then cover and chill for up to 24 hours until ready to serve.

2. Strain the gin into 2 tall glasses and add a scoop of ice cubes to each. Top up with the sparkling rhubarb and serve.

Method 1. Place the strawberries and sugar in small pan and heat very gently for 10 minutes until the strawberries are very soft and pulpy. Press through a fine sieve and leave to cool until ready to serve.

2. Place a little of the strawberry sauce and a scoop of sorbet in long-stemmed glasses. Pour in the sparkling rhubarb, drizzle over a little more sauce, and serve with straws and long-handled spoons.

European Driving Tips

he summer holidays are on their way and with many choosing to jump in their cars and drive rather than fly, here’s some top tips to help you on your way: Map reading is a dying art these days, thanks to sat navs and mobile phone apps. but it’s a good idea to have a detailed map stashed in the car.

If you’re taking children and they are 12-yearsold or younger, or 135cm in height they’ll need to be sitting in a suitable child seat.

Don’t forget your driving licence, if you get pulled over abroad, the police will want to see it - you’ll also need it if you plan to hire a car.

In France, you are legally required to carry your own breathalyser (probably a good idea if you’re going near one of France’s wine regions!)

Do your research and learn the road rules for an area that you are travelling through.

Also, remember that the road signs are all in metric, and as such the speed limit is displayed in KMPH, not MPH. If you look after your car, it’ll look after you, so get it serviced before you depart as it’ll give you the peace of mind before you set-off.

It’s also worth making sure your breakdown cover extends to Europe. If not, it’ll save you a lot of grief should your car let you down.

Mediterranean Magic

I

f you can’t get away this year, how about creating your own Mediterranean hotspot in your garden? Even if you do manage to escape to the sun for a week or two this year, you’ll still have the rest of the summer at home and a little slice of Italy, France or Greece outside your back door will bring happy memories flooding back.

The first thing to do is to choose the sunniest spot available – it’ll not only make sitting out there more enjoyable, but will also mean that you can install some serious sun-loving plants too.

Painting the nearby house, shed or garage wall with white masonry paint will help to create the right atmosphere.

At the same time it will help to reflect our sunlight – often a bit washed out compared to more southern climes - so providing a stronger light for the type of plants that appreciate it.

Mediterranean gardens often make full use of the walls and any other vertical surfaces, so put up hanging baskets, pots and wall baskets and cram them full of plants.

Plants in pots are a must and if possible choose stone or terracotta containers.

If you want to make brand new pots look more weathered

try painting them with a solution of plain yoghurt as this will help to encourage rapid colonisation by mosses, algae and lichens.

Any new hard landscaping such as wall, paths or patios and terraced surfaces will look best in natural stone and there are now also terracotta tiles available for use in the garden.

Terracotta tiles can also have a storage-heater effect too – after a long, hot day they will have absorbed heat and this will then be released gradually in the evening.

Add interest to a vertical surface by planting a vine. They have attractive leaves and there are plenty to choose from that will fruit well in our climate.

You may not be able to create your own vintage but the vines will look particularly authentic when draped with a few bunches of grapes.

Glazed tiles, wall-hangings and the odd ornament or two can also add to the Mediterranean look, but make sure you choose items that won’t be instantly bleached by the sun.

Try growing your own oranges or lemons. With our generally milder winters some gardeners are even managing to keep these plants outside all year round with only the

minimum of protection.

Growing your citrus tree in a good-sized terracotta pot means that you can move it into a more protected spot if necessary.

With their wonderful silvery grey leaves and their often rather untidy or gnarled shape, olives too are a plant well worth considering.

Olives are best grown in a large container unless you have a warm garden and a very well-drained soil as they hate winter wet.

Some plants just spell out Mediterranean Magic – try geraniums and pelargoniums, aeoniums and sempervivums, rosemary, thyme, oregano and pretty well anything with silvery foliage.

Go for the brightest coloured flowers and your new holiday destination will also benefit from a subtle Mediterranean aroma too.

They won’t all hatch on your pet either, after 2 - 3 weeks some will hatch on your sofa or carpets, in your pet’s bed or in your garden, and the cycle starts again!

What are the signs my pet has fleas?

You may see one on your pet – if you do, there will be more!

There might be dark coloured specks in their coat when you groom – these may be flea droppings Scratching or itching needs investigation Bald patches are another sign (though other conditions can cause this too) Flea bites on family members

If you suspect a flea problem, then a visit to the vet is always a good idea - they’ll be able to prescribe the correct treatment for your pet and also help with products to treat your home.

A two-pronged approach is vital to stopping the hatching cycle. Treat all of your cats and dogs and your home, otherwise, if they have eggs, these will still hatch and will start the cycle over again!

It’s important to keep up the treatment on a regular basis as a preventative measure, or you may get more unwelcome houseguests than you bargained for this summer!

I have worked in Horticulture all my adult life having served as an apprentice at Brighton Parks and Gardens. I was even helping to train gardeners for them at the Sussex Parks Training Centre.

The gardens here at the Temple are some 28 acres excluding the buildings, and are a traditional English country garden with wonderful walks through the parkland. These walks vary from a small stroll around the Temple itself where we have traditional flower beds with spring and summer bedding displays to the magnificent Rhododendron walks which are breath taking when in flower in May. We have woodland walks that have Bluebells, Wood Anemones in, not to mention the trees, Oaks, Atlantic Ceders, Lime Trees, and Yew Trees the list goes on. Spring flowers include Daffodils, Tulips, and Forget-me-nots to name a few and if you know where to look little surprises like the Snake Head Fritillaries.

Because the garden houses the Temple it is a garden for quiet meditation, a place for prayer, a place to come and think through life’s challenges, a place to find peace and comfort. For this reason pets are not welcome here and we invite our visitors to respect the quiet space of others, also enjoying the garden and the peace and tranquillity found here. Families are always welcome and it is to be noted that uniting families is one of the main reasons for a temple.
