Wardrobe Wizards

B

By Sarah Ballingal

eing more of a diner than a designer, when I heard that Wardrobe Wizards sewing club meets between 11.30am and 3.00pm on Wednesday afternoons, my first thought was ‘What do they do about lunch?’ Thankfully, even the most dedicated dress makers need to take a breather, and it was during their lunch break that I was able to chat with these delightful ladies and discover what it is about the club that keeps them returning each week. Despite the name, it seems no magic is involved, just expert tuition from the group’s founder and leader, Penny Loveday and her right-hand woman, Sandra Bass. Having first met at an Adult Education sewing class many years ago, Penny and Sandra started up Wardrobe Wizards which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Since its inception, the club has occasionally had to relocate to accommodate growing numbers, but it is now happily ensconced in the Albert Rooms

6

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

in Albert Road, Horley. This newly refurbished Victorian hall is perfect - light and spacious with a large cutting table for fabric and plenty of room for all the members who come along with their sewing machines and their enthusiasm. Some joined several years ago while others more recently. Reasons vary from wanting to brush up on rusty sewing skills to having a one-off project to work on. Members’ supply their own materials and skills can range from expert to beginner, yet whatever their level each one benefits from Penny’s expertise and patient instruction. Tanya, who joined two-years-ago, originally came to learn how to use her new sewing machine with its unfamiliar functions. Now she and her ‘Janome’ are firm friends, and she is currently making a yellow dress – a very ‘on trend’ colour according to fashionistas! Two other members, Janet and Linda, happily told me of projects they have worked on during their membership, and it’s easy to see what a cheerful and friendly club this is. Wardrobe Wizards is currently at full capacity with 14 members on the register and other hopefuls on a waiting list. However, it is possible to come for a one-off tutorial at

RH Uncovered

@RHUncovered

£12 per session, and Penny can squeeze a lot of instruction and advice into those three hours! Classes and workshops are also run at nearby Aztec Threads in Smallmead House where a lot of Penny’s members buy their supplies. Owned by Karen and Alan, this is an Aladdin’s cave of all things to inspire creativity.... threads of all kinds, craft fabric, fat quarters, buttons and beads, etc., and pride of place is given to their Millennium longarm for quilting. Television programmes like the BBC’s Great British Sewing Bee have helped to popularise craft and dressing making in recent years, but it’s not just that. Groups like Wardrobe Wizards and Aztec Threads demonstrate just how ‘close-knit’ and welcoming the craft fraternity is - and where friendships can to be found amongst the fabrics! Super Soprano By Sarah Ballingal

B

eautiful, talented and charming – no, sadly not the start of my autobiography but a description of nightingale - Joanna Forest - AKA Mrs Selby, new bride of James Selby an experienced performer and director himself having been involved with Horley’s Archway Theatre. At an age when many little girls dream of being princesses and mermaids, Joanna already had her feet firmly on the ground – or rather the stage and knew very early on that she wanted to be a performer. It was only a matter of time before she was accepted at The Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London where her talent flourished. Acting was her first ambition and she has appeared in various roles, however, she eventually focussed on singing as it gave her the versatility and freedom she desired. Actors spend their time being someone else - Joanna wanted to perform as Joanna! Her singing style is known as ‘crossover’ soprano which means she has the best of both worlds – putting a classical twist on more modern artists like The Stone Roses.

8

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

She has won numerous singing awards and is now regarded as one of today’s most talented upcoming sopranos. She performs nationally and was even in Reigate’s Priory Park to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday in June. She is currently working on an EP accompanied by the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, which includes a cover version of Slade’s ‘How does it feel?’ and a song written especially for her by songwriter Danny Demers. Joanna’s repertoire has something to appeal to all tastes. At first glance, Joanna has it all but at just 21-years-old her life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, a condition unusual in one so young. Thankfully, she made a full recovery and with her ‘glass half full’ personality she has used her own experience and talent to help others in a similar position. In 2014 along with The Sun Newspaper, Joanna devised, produced and performed at “Busting to Sing” a huge concert held at London’s 1,400-seat Palace Theatre in aid of the charity ‘CoppaFeel!’ This perspicuously-named charity aims to encourage women to examine their

RH Uncovered

@RHUncovered

breasts regularly in order to detect any changes that might indicate that treatment is required. Young women especially need to hear this message as it doesn’t always get through to that age group. Joanna knows the risk only too well and is now one of the charity’s ambassadors known affectionately as ‘Boobettes’! When I asked this particular Boobette what her plans were for the future, her reply was instant: ‘To keep singing!’ So for anyone who has yet to hear Joanna sing live there is plenty of time. Mind you, if the wind’s in the right direction and she hits that high C, wherever she’s performing you might just hear her in Horley!

Community Car Share Schemes/Good Neighbour Groups By Sarah Ballingal

I

can’t hear the term, ‘Car Share’ without thinking of Peter Kay’s BBC sitcom of the same name (put it on your DVD wish-list, its hilarious). However, with the urgent need for more car sharing, transport schemes and Good Neighbour groups is not so amusing. Our elderly population is increasing, and many people have mobility issues for a variety of reasons. The need for low cost reliable door-to-door transport is a growing concern. For those of us who have our own transport, it can be easy to take for granted the ready convenience of jumping into a car and getting where we need to go without a second thought. Yet to those who don’t have this luxury, life can be a real struggle. Getting to hospital and doctors’ appointments, shopping trips, visiting family and friends, attending regular clubs and social events – all these activities are an intrinsic part of everyday life and with many elderly people becoming more isolated and house-bound such outings are an essential means of helping them to feel they are still a valued part of society. Unfortunately, in March of this year funding for the borough’s ‘Dial-a-Ride’ and ‘Buses for You’ service ended, and these two schemes have reduced their provision to shopping-only trips at a cost of £50 per year for subscribers. In addition to this, the council also provides a taxi voucher

10

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

service; allocation is limited but based on an application process for those residents that are in most need. This situation of dwindling resources has put more onus on the voluntary sector to step-in and provide transport and assistance for residents in need, and some community groups and charities are already doing this. However, more schemes are needed borough-wide as towns like Horley and Reigate have nothing in place. ‘Councils for Voluntary Service’ (CVS) is a body which exists to serve voluntary, community and faith groups in their work. CVS can provide a wide range of services to support organisations and groups, including funding advice, training and information on areas like human resources and finance. A meeting was held in June with representatives of the Borough Council, CVS and charities like Merstham Neighbours and Surrey Community Action with a view

to developing new independent voluntary car share schemes/ Good Neighbour groups in the borough. Vicki Turton from Surrey Community Action is heading up this project and she would appreciate hearing from any RH Uncovered readers who have relevant ideas and/ or resources, or who would like to be involved in getting a scheme off the ground. They need local people for decisionmaking committees in their neighbourhood. It’s very early days yet and these plans will take time to formulate and put into practice, however, it is hoped that more schemes will be up and running within next 18 months or so; and it’s important that they are - to many people they are a lifeline. As a grateful recipient of the Merstham Neighbours transport scheme once told them: ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you. I don’t know where I’d be without your service. Please don’t stop – you mustn’t give up’.

Glorious Gatton

By Sarah Ballingal ike those who live on the coast but never go to the beach, I have lived just four miles from Gatton for years without once setting foot in this beautiful park. However, judging by the Guardian Newspaper’s recent survey, I am not alone, for Gatton Park features in their worldwide list: ‘10 of the best gardens you’ve probably never heard of ’. If you too are a Gatton virgin, then 2016 is the perfect time to visit as it marks the 300th birthday of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, the 18th Century landscape gardener who transformed estates and who was commissioned by Sir George Colebrooke to work his magic at Gatton. Gatton’s origins are at least Saxon and featured in The Doomsday Book. However, it is ‘Capability’ Brown’s influence that remains most evident today, along with modifications by Jeremiah ‘Mr Mustard’ Colman.

L

In the early 20th century Colman, Gatton’s then owner, worked with landscape gardener, H E Milner, adding the Edwardian features of a Japanese Garden, Rock Garden and Rose Garden to Brown’s earlier creation. Jeremiah - an authority on orchids – also added magnificent orchid houses to display his extensive collection. Sadly, Gatton Hall was gutted by fire in 1934 but rebuilt incorporating the original Corinthian portico - the only feature to survive. Following the rebuild, Gatton never returned to its former glory. Troops from the Canadian Army were stationed at the house during the Second World War, using the lake for D-Day practice. In 1948 the house was acquired by the Royal Alexandra and Albert School. Neither the army nor school considered maintenance of the parkland a priority. For nearly half a century the parkland was largely neglected, and it wasn’t

until the mid-1990s that a real effort was made to restore it. Along with volunteers, the late Pat Pay, Gatton’s Landscape and Heritage Officer, started this Herculean task using a combination of restoration and conservation techniques. Over the years, archives have been studied, and features gradually rediscovered and restored, often with methods as basic as prodding the undergrowth with forks! It was a project very similar to The Lost Gardens of Heligan and in 1999 Channel 4 featured Gatton’s Japanese garden in Monty Don’s series ‘Lost Gardens’. On my visit in May, our guide was Pat’s husband, David Pay, who knows Gatton like the back of his green-fingered hand. David was a former teacher at the school and in his free time helped his wife with her work.

£4 entry, children free. Open to the public February – October on the first Sunday of each month, 1.00pm - 5.00pm Also Heritage Open Day (September) Weekly tours take place Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2.00pm (£6)

His tour was a delight, and he regaled us with Gatton tales past and present - we spent several engrossing hours, and there’s not space enough here to do justice! We saw - spectacular views, unusual plants and trees, expansive lake, pleasant walks, incredible wildlife and a historic church... the list goes on. and on! A guided tour is a wonderfully informative way to explore - a buggy is available for those with mobility issues.

Volunteer at Gatton

However, a hands-on way to experience Gatton is to become a volunteer. The Education Team, Park Warden and Head Gardener all value voluntary help, and along with discovering the park, you may just find you’re a modern-day ‘Capability’ Brown yourself!

Who let the dogs out? By Sarah Ballingal ‘WALKIES!’ Famously adopted by Barbara Woodhouse - the 1980’s version of The Dog Whisperer - is guaranteed to fill any dog’s heart with joy, and this autumn thousands of dogs will prick up their ears to the cry of ‘BIG WALKIES’ when the RSPCA will be staging this fund-raising event at venues all around the country. Originally inspired by Australia’s ‘The Million Paw Walk’ which has more than 250,000 dogs taking part annually, the UK version – RSPCA Big Walkies - was launched in 2015. Although on a slightly smaller scale, its popularity is already growing and last year’s total of 20 walks has doubled to 41 in 2016, one of which is to be held in our own Priory Park, Reigate on Sunday, September 4. The RSPCA is made up of 162 branches nationwide, each with its own board of independent trustees and fund raising targets. Sara Kortenray, trustee the Surrey East branch, told me excitedly of their own Big Walkies event in Reigate. Setting off at 11.00am from The Pavilion there will be two routes available on the day - either 3km or 5km depending on the stamina of owner and pet. Registration can be done on the day although ideally should be done online. The cost is £10 plus £5 extra for any additional dog, and this includes a T-shirt for the 2-legged participant and a bandana for the 4-legged one. On completion of the course, a goodie bag with certificate and rosette will be awarded (who has which is up to owner and pet!). Participants walking without a dog are welcome; they are asked to pay £10 to take part.

Entrants are encouraged to seek individual sponsorship and all money raised will be divided between the RSPCA National Society and the Surrey East Branch. Priory Park is a favourite haunt for dogs on any day of the year but on ‘Big Walkies’ day it promises to be something quite special. There will be a real buzz in the park, and as well as the walk itself there will be stalls selling dog-related items and refreshments for everyone. There are still opportunities for commercial stall holders to book a pitch (£25), and if you are interested in having a stall, please contact the branch directly (email details below). Volunteers will be needed for a variety of roles, and anyone interested in participating in this way should visit www.rspca.org.uk to register. Bearing in mind our temperamental British weather entrants and onlookers would be wise to bring wellies and waterproofs as well as sunscreen and sunglasses, but as dogs and their owners are well-used to daily walks in all weathers it promises to be a fantastic day come rain or shine. You’d be barking mad to miss it! Website: www.rspca.org.uk/bigwalkies Email: contact-us@rspca-surreyeast.org.uk

Anyone for tennis? By Sarah Ballingal

It’s an old joke but it certainly applies to me... The only exercise I get is jumping to conclusions. Consequently, along with my total lack of hand-eye coordination, this sadly means that my participation at Reigate Lawn Tennis Club can only ever be as a spectator. Happily though, for their Open Tournament being held in August, spectators are as welcome as players at this friendly club in Manor Road, Reigate.

W

hether playing or watching, participants are in for a treat this summer as once again, RLTC along with its sponsor, Morrisons Solicitors, will be holding ‘The Friendly Tournament’ between August 8 and August 13. Sanctioned by the Lawn Tennis Association this event is a Grade 4 County Tour Event at which ratings and rankings are available for both Adult and Junior competitors. There will be junior events for all age groups and for the first time a Men’s 50+ Singles competition. The prize fund for the adult events is £650 but whether a winner or a runner-up, competitors can be sure of having a fantastic time at this annual event which attracts players of all standards from a wide area. Last year’s event attracted more than 200 competitors and one enthusiastic entrant commented on Twitter afterwards: “Great club, great tournament, great referee, they made us feel so welcome.” Since its foundation in 1906, the club has had a tradition of hosting tournaments and this year marks the Club’s 110th anniversary. Members old and new have joined the club for its family-friendly ethos and atmosphere which welcomes players of all abilities.

Throughout the year, the Club enters teams in men’s, ladies’, mixed and veteran leagues. It also has a large number of junior members who have designated court times with free coaching. In the Club’s early days the grass courts were kept in top-tip match condition by a horse-drawn roller but today, facilities have naturally improved somewhat since then and now include top of the range tennis spaces: • • • • • • •

There are plenty of opportunities for ‘play’ of a different kind too, as off-court RLTC has a very active social side with barbeques, quiz nights and themed evenings throughout the year, along with games and bridge evenings during the winter, and of course, Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The Club really does have something for everyone, even the athletically challenged like yours truly. So whether you’d rather be holding a racket or a rosé, do come along to this year’s tournament and help make it the best year ever!

Gone But Not Forgotten…

Since we first starting hitting your doormats ten years-ago several popular and much-loved High Street names have been lost, they may have gone but they’re not forgotten. 1) Woolworths – Perhaps the biggest and saddest loss in recent times, the store giant closed in 2009. 2) MFI – A furniture mainstay for many years, the brand folded in 2008 before being revived in 2011 as online-only retailer before collapsing again in 2015. 3) Comet – Electrical powerhouse hit hard times in 2011 before closing completely in 2012. 4) JJB Sports – The big sportswear brand disappeared from British High Streets in 2012. 5) Blockbuster – The ever-present video-rental chain and firm family favourite closed-down in 2013. By Jacob White

6) Phones 4U – One of the earliest mobile phone retailers, the store closed in 2014. 7) Virgin Megastore – The famous music store was rebranded as Zavvi in 2007. 8) Abbey National – The bank was taken-over and rebranded by the Spanish bank Santander in 2011. 9) Somerfield – Popular supermarket was taken-over by food retailing competitor Co-Op in 2009. 10) BHS – The most recent name we’ve lost, the High Street stalwart went into administration this year.

Do you have fond memories of some of the brands lost since 2006? We’d love to hear your memories! Share your thoughts on our Facebook page RHUncovered or on our Twitter feed @RHUncovered

The Red Arrows Return!

The Red Arrows will return this year to the world’s biggest free seafront airshow to be held in Sussex. Attracting crowds of thousands, Airbourne: Eastbourne International Airshow boasts a two-mile flying display line along the Sussex resort’s seafront and is a weekend not to be missed! By Jacob White

F

eaturing the best in military and civilian aviation with display teams including the much-loved Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, better known as the Red Arrows once again taking to the skies this year those in attendance in Eastbourne will be treated to some show-stopping displays between 11 - 14 August. Airshow visitors will also have the chance to see the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight on all four days, in a year which marks the 80th anniversary of the Spitfire and the 75th year of the Lancaster Bomber. The Red Arrows will take to the skies on Friday and Saturday much to the delight of event organisers. Eastbourne Borough Council Lead Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Enterprise, Cllr Margaret Bannister said:

“We are delighted to hear that airshow favourites, the Red Arrows have chosen to return to Airbourne for two great displays this year, which will no doubt attract many thousands.” The King Air, a multi-engine pilot trainer, part of No. 3 Flying Training School and based at RAF Cranwell, will fly on the Saturday and Sunday with Saturday being what organisers have called as Super Saturday - last year it celebrated its busiest ever day with thousands of spectators visiting the event. In 2015, the culmination of the 12-hour Super Saturday extravaganza was a twilight pyro-aerobatics, Scouting For Girls on stage and a firework display. 12,000 people watched the chart-topping band from the beach stage alone, with thousands more lining the seafront to see the firework spectacular.

The atmosphere on Super Saturday was amazing; we’ve never seen the seafront look so vibrant.” Now in its 24th year, the event is celebrating a recent haul of national awards including Tourism Event of the Year 2015/16 at the Beautiful South Awards and the UK’s Best FREE Airshow by Airscene. The event isn’t just about scooping national awards; As in 2015 this year will see more than 200 volunteer bucket collectors out in force, with collections by the Rotary Clubs of Sovereign Harbour and Hailsham, along with support from the clubs of Eastbourne, Eastbourne AM, Eastbourne Sovereign and Beachy Head. The ‘give a quid’ initiative is something organisers have launched - by asking for donations to Airbourne, which helps keep the event free, and in addition, 30% of all donations go to local charities with last year’s event final total raised by Rotary Club volunteers amassing an impressive £36,415.82.

PET CARE

The importance of grooming By Jacob White

Regular grooming keeps your pet looking in tip-top condition and helps keep their skin and coat healthy it also helps you to find lumps or other conditions that should be checked by your vet.

I

t is possible to carry out basic but important grooming, such as bathing, brushing and combing in the home yourself, as is brushing your pet’s teeth and checking to ensure their ears are clean. You might be quite happy to trim their pet’s nails at home, others prefer to leave this job to the experts, and a professional groomer will usually include this service in a grooming session. They will also be able to clip your pet to suit their breed and remove any mats that may have formed - when choosing a groomer ensure that the facility is well-equipped, well-lit, and clean. Groomers should treat all pets with care, paying particular attention to those that may be frightened or uncooperative and the salon will ideally have separate kennelling areas for dogs and cats. Some pets may resist at first – after all, this is a new experience for them, but most will settle fairly quickly. If your pet finds it stressful going to a groomer, consider employing the services of a mobile.

Questions to ask: • Do they appear knowledgeable? • Do they have any references from current or past customers that they would be willing to share? • How often does the groomer monitor the pets in their care?

FOOD AND DRINK

Go Gluten Free A dietary revolution spurred-on by both medical reasons and healthy living. By Shelley Baker

R

ecent research has revealed that freefrom food sales have rocketed in the UK with sales in 2016 expected to reach £531 million – many Brits are changing their diet habits and going against the grains, are you? Awareness of gluten allergies and coeliac disease (an autoimmune disease which affects 1 in 100 people in the UK) has been raised over the last few years. The popularity in gluten free cooking from fashionable foodie bloggers Deliciously Ella, Madeleine Shaw and Livia’s Kitchen, thankfully means being on a gluten free diet has never been easier. In fact, in just the four years since I was diagnosed with coeliac disease, 2.6 million homes in the UK now have at least one family member avoiding gluten AND 60% of adults have knowingly bought a free-from gluten product. Demand for a gluten free diet has become so high that since 2014, all packaged foods must display gluten containing ingredients in bold.

28

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

Furthermore, The Food Information Regulations have enforced that when eating out, food businesses must provide allergen information for the meals they serve. What exactly is gluten and why do people cut it out? Gluten is a protein found in cereal grains such as wheat, oats, barley, rye and spelt. In a nutshell: it gives food the elasticity to rise. For people, like me, with coeliac disease; the proteins cause our bodies to not only attack these proteins but also attack an enzyme in the cells of the digestive tract, ultimately damaging the intestinal wall. Bloating, fatigue and anaemia are common amongst undiagnosed coeliacs and those with a wheat allergy or gluten intolerance.

RH Uncovered

@RHUncovered

Of course, many people without the autoimmune disease or an allergy have chosen to be free from grains commonly associated with gluten because of other benefits including weight loss and a reduction in skin conditions such as eczema and headaches. What can I eat? If you’re anything like I was before going g-free, you’ll probably never have paid too much attention to food labels. However, when cutting gluten from your diet, it’s a must, as you’ll be surprised just what the grainy stuff finds its way into. HP Brown Sauce is the thing that still shocks me. Carbohydrate-heavy food favourites such as bread, cakes, pastries, pasta, pizza, porridge,

breaded products, soy sauce and beers are just a few of the things to throw out (although you can buy delicious-can’t-taste-the-difference-free-from options in supermarkets and shops locally!). In come rice, eggs, fresh fruit and veg and meat! One of my favourite (and filling) recipes is paella – which should be naturally gluten free, just double check your stock cube ingredients. Heat a tablespoon of oil in a large frying pan. Add a chopped onion and soften for 5 mins. Stir in a teaspoon of smoked paprika add 300g of paella rice, allowing to cook for a minute. Stir in a 400g tin of chopped tomatoes and 900ml of chicken stock. Cook for 15 mins, stirring occasionally until rice is almost tender. With liquid still in the pan, add a 400g bag frozen seafood. Stir and cover with a lid and allow to simmer for 5 mins, or until the prawns are cooked through and the rice is tender. Then serve with a little lemon juice!

Eating Out We’re lucky to have a plethora of brilliant restaurants nearby who can cater for our gluten free diet, without fuss, including chains such as Pizza Express, Ask, Bella Italia, Prezzo and Chiquito. Many pubs throughout the Uncovered region are also free-from friendly including; The Plough and Furrow (Horley), The Duke’s Head (Crawley Down), Old House Inn (Copthorne), The Wiremill Inn (near Lingfield) and The White Hart (Buxted). For a special occasion, Haywards Heath’s Jeremy’s Restaurant is a must! Love fish and chips? Fear not, the Master Fryer in both Crawley and East Grinstead offer gluten free chip shop treats on the first (Crawley) and third (East Grinstead) Saturdays of the month!

Classy Conservatories

Though made popular in Victorian times, mainly as a space to grow plants, conservatories have certainly come a long way since then! Gone are the days when conservatories were high maintenance – today you can have a virtually maintenance free conservatory with self-cleaning glass and tiled roofs! A popular choice for an extension to a home’s living space it will also add value to your property.

T

By Jacob White

he main reason most of us invest in a conservatory is to expand the living space within our home and it’s important to remember that if it can provide enough room to enable us to stay put, rather than moving, then it’s a worthy investment that can help save stress and money.

An addition of a conservatory can help create a tranquil space between your home and your garden -helping you enjoy views of the outdoors from the comfort of your extended home and don’t forget a conservatory is a great hub for a house party! If a party hub isn’t quite your thing, how about it being the perfect portal between your home and your garden?

Whether it’s gardening or painting, your favourite pastime will need little inspiration if you’re doing it in a well-lit room with outdoor views. A conservatory also makes for a perfect dining space, from early morning summer breakfasts with views out to the garden, to almost “al-fresco” evening dining without the midges! continued on page 34

Choosing your Blinds I caught up with Sarah and Brian from Interior Blinds UK Ltd to find out more about how you can dress up your conservatory with blinds. Sarah said: “Blinds help create a peaceful sanctuary; they transition well from summer to winter making them the perfect window covering choice.’ “Both warm and cool shades and border design introduce an aspect of nature into your home” Sarah added.

Performance fabrics include: 1) Advance solar control –

3) Anti-static –

The fabric acts as a barrier to heat loss and offers protection from UV rays

Repels dust ensuring the blind stays fresh

2) Blackout –

Prevents the collection of dampness stopping mould from forming

For when additional light control is required

4) Moisture resistant –

HOMES

How much does a conservatory cost you? There are many elements that go into the pricing with prices ranging from £5,000 - £100,000 and more. Importantly, know what you want the space for and with a budget, discuss your options with a consultant. By selecting a quality installer of conservatories you will only have to do it once in your entire life and the financial benefits can be worth it. Homeowners with conservatories add a potential 108% after spending an average £5,300, according to Zopa.com*.

The materials used for the construction of your conservatory will, as with most things, come down to budget. UPVC is a good choice for those on a budget, is easily maintainable and will be suitable for most (with the exception maybe of period) properties. For period properties, or if you have a bigger budget hardwood is another option. Though not as maintenance free as UPVC, looked after it will be just as long-lasting.

Whichever material is used for the construction, new technology means you aren’t just restricted to glass for your roof either, tiled roofs on conservatories are now growing in popularity making a seamless transition from original building to your new living space.

The Benefits of a Tiled Conservatory Roof If you find that your conservatory isn’t being used as much as you had envisaged because of excessive heat in the summer months and excessive loss of heat in the winter then a tiled roof might be the solution! Traditionally conservatories have had glazed or polycarbonate roofing, but modern technology means that you can now have a highly insulated tiled roof on your conservatory – the benefits are many too! • Significantly cooler in the summer and dramatically warmer in the winter, making it a room that can be used every day of the year. • A tiled roof will also help with Energy Saving costs, due to its superior insulation over glass or polycarbonate roofs. • It will protect your furnishings from UV rays, meaning your furniture won’t fade or bleach – and you’ll be able to watch TV comfortably without the glare from direct sunlight. • Reduces maintenance time and costs – glass or polycarbonate roofs need much greater regular maintenance • Noise reduction – a solid tiled roof will reduce the noise levels inside the room from rain, wind, and other outside noise. • With the benefit of a plastered ceiling, you will not only reduce noise but will also mean that you are not restricted to your choice of lighting.

HOMES Will you need planning permission? In most cases, the answer is no, but there are checks you can make to see if permission will be needed. If your new conservatory is likely to take up more than half of the land surrounding your house, or if the roof will exceed the highest point of your existing roof you’re likely to need to obtain planning permission.

TOP TIP

Are there any downsides? If your conservatory is going to be south-facing you are going to need to think about how to keep out the heat and glare of the midday sun! There are plenty of options ranging from window tinting by a specialist who can install a protective film to your glass, to blinds which will both help enormously. Conversely, a north-facing conservatory is going to get chilly during

the autumn and winter months, so it would be worth considering installing some heating. A conservatory will also reduce the footprint of your garden, but you can more than make up for this with the additional living space it will provide!

Renubath… Bringing Bathrooms Back to Life! In an age of fastmoving trends & disposable designs it’s comforting to know that you don’t necessarily have to throw the bath out with the bathwater! Help is at hand… an expert team of specialists will lovingly restore your bath, basin, indeed your whole suite to look better than new (and even a different colour if desired!) Renubath apply their transformative resurfacing skills to a wide range of sanitaryware, from cast-iron enamel baths to more contemporary porcelain and even, in some cases, to modern acrylic fittings. Freestanding pieces such as classic rolltop baths and smaller items such as original taps can be restored in their workshops. Most of their work however is done but they will also on site to avoid upheaval. From salvaging antique treasures that may once have seemed beyond repair, to a simple spruce up of a chipped, scuffed or ‘tidemarked’ surface, Renubath can save time, money, hassle and landfill waste by bringing a more sustainable approach to the business of bathroom refurbishment. A refreshing anti-dote to the throwaway culture of “new, new, new,” this hands-on service from a dedicated and highly experienced family run operation is very much in tune with the zeitgeist in its attitude of authenticity and renewal.

Their services have been sought from royal palaces to piedaterres and from a broad and highly appreciative clientele of homeowners, developers, hoteliers, designers and even the odd rock star for good measure – no matter what your budget, the appeal of avoiding waste and saving something that still has value is universal. Renovating your bathroom does not have to be a costly investment anymore. Renubath prices start from £195 exc VAT for re-enamelling basins and shower trays, and £350 exc VAT for reenamelling baths. Tap reconditioning and re-plating or finishing in polished brass start from £180 inc VAT. About your local Renubath representative: John Moffat is the local Renubath technician. He restores baths in Brighton, Hove, Tunbridge Wells and throughout Sussex, Midsussex and parts of Kent.

John is our Head Technician. If any of the other technicians have a problem they can’t solve on a job they contact John. If you book John you are getting the best! John has been working as a bath resurfacer for over 20 years. John has a particular interest in restoring antique items that other companies have been unable to restore. He particularly enjoys meeting new clients in their homes and takes great pride in his work About Renubath: Renubaths office is managed by Teresa Kane. The office is based in Sussex but enquiries from al over the country are dealt with here. Renubath also have a dedicated workshop in Surrey for people who wish to have their items restored off site. GARDENS

Grow your own take-away By Pippa Greenwood

W

e all know that home-cooked food is better for us than a stream of takeaways, but then we all deserve a little self-indulgence from time to time. So why not save yourself the guilt (and some cash) and grow your own Chinese takeaway right here in your own garden? No I haven’t turned cookery writer, but you can easily grow some of those tasty and crunchy vegetables that make the backbone of many a Chinese stir-fry... and the great thing is that oriental vegetables do well from late summer sowings, so it’s off to the garden centre (not the takeaway) you go! Bean sprouts are so easy to grow you could almost do it with your eyes shut. The common types are sprouted mung-beans, and you can either buy packets of seed or a small packet of the beans themselves from your local health food store. They’ll come with easy cultivation instructions and before you know it you’ll have the beginnings of a stir-fry. Mizuna has got to be one of the most attractive leafy vegetables you can grow. Its green leaves appear soon after sowing the seed in a pot or in open ground, and they add a great spicy flavour to your stirfry and also add a zing to salads and sandwiches.

Pak-choi

And where would your Chinese meal be without that delicious Oriental veg, pak-choi. It’s another easy vegetable to grow late in the summer: just sow the seeds in a well-forked soil, water, and wait. Thin out as per the instructions of the seed packet (you can eat the thinnings too), then just pinch off the roots and pop the plants into the wok. Pak-choi also grows well in a container of multi-purpose compost. Radishes add heat as well as crunch, and there are some lovely oriental varieties such as Mantanhong, which is a Britishbred Chinese variety with a superbly crunchy bright red-topink inner flesh and spherical white roots – great for colour and texture and with a sweet almost nutty flavour. Sow in open ground or pots from now until early September for cropping in a few weeks’ time.

Garlic is another essential ingredient. It’s not really the right time of year to plant garlic, but for an unexpected little extra take a few spare cloves and pot them in trays of compost. Keep the compost slightly moist and in a week or two the cloves will start to sprout. What you’re after here are the bright green foliage which adds a definitely garlicy flavour to stir-fries and a touch of colour as well. Spring onions are another stir-fry component. You won’t get a fully mature crop for harvesting this year unless you’re extremely lucky; but what you will get is a super-young onion that will add both colour and intense flavour to the contents of your wok. And finally, mushrooms will add a meaty texture to your home-grown vegetable stir-fry. Kits for growing both oyster and field mushrooms are available in many garden centres or by mail order. It’s not always easy to get right, I know, but the challenge is definitely worth it when you have exotic mushrooms growing in your cellar, garden frame, greenhouse, or shed.

MOTORING

Buying a used car? By Ben Morley

T

his month I’ve been asked to discuss a survey carried out by webuyanycar. com, which revealed that around 250,000 used-car buyers don’t bother to test drive their potential purchase before handing over their hard earned pennies. A statistic in itself that is slightly ironic as neither do they, but that’s another story entirely. They reckon that 10% of the 1000 car buyers involved in their survey said that they didn’t even turn the key to hear the car running. An interesting approach, but actually it sounds about right. We often see customers that have just bought themselves a nice second hand car and then find they are coming in to see us a couple of days later because it’s got a noise, or a light on the dash, or worse. Perhaps something that could have been avoided in the first place by a quick spin around the block. If you’re buying a car, it’s no one else’s money that you’ll be handing over, so it makes sense to at least do a few basic checks before shelling out the cash. Kicking the tyres isn’t these days considered a thorough enough inspection. There’s plenty of information on the internet with regards basic checks to make, but in terms of actually driving the car, there’s a few things you should always do. Always hear the car running. Ideally you want to hear it start up from cold as certain problems can lessen when the engine is warm. Before you turn the key, check the temperature gauge shows cold and just feel the top of the engine and make sure it hasn’t been given a quick run-up to clear the issue before you got there.

48

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

RH Uncovered

When you do start it, listen for unusual rattles, squeals or rotational noises that are in time with, or half the speed of, the engine idle. Also, a quick look rearwards is a good idea, as we don’t want to be seeing a massive amount of smoke, blue or white. Take the car for a drive. Try and do some around town driving and at least one run up a dual carriageway. You need to be paying attention to how the clutch feels (if it has one) how the gears feel, whether there is any form of wobble through the steering, if there is any strange behaviour under braking, if you can hear any strange noises in the car. Granted you can’t be expected to know what you’re listening out for, but you can get a feel for the car in general. Look out for any warning lights on the dash coming up, too. If you are unsure about anything, either ask your local garage to look it over before you buy it, or walk away. It’s easier to find another car that you like than explaining to the bank manager why you need more money for the car that you only just bought.

BUCKET LIST

Things to tick off your bucket list this summer By Shelley Baker

How many times have you said “we’ll do that, or go there in the summer?” If you’re anything like me you’ll have spent many a winter and spring day wishing for the warm weather to arrive. However, summer days seem to pass by in the blink of an eye and before you know it, it’s autumn again and you’ve ticked almost nothing off your summer wishe list. Sound familiar? Let’s not let it happen this summer. Instead, hold on to those summer ideas and get them pencilled in and enjoy them! Here’s a few bucket list ideas to inspire you: A Traditional Picnic Ah, the quintessential English picnic – is there anything more summery than to get out and eat in the great outdoors? Whether you go all out with a tartan rug, wicker hamper, strawberries and fizz or simply decide to dine alfresco rather than aldesko during your lunch break, a summer picnic is an easy thing to accomplish. Or it should be, providing the great British weather is on our side! Host a Family BBQ The delicious waft of a BBQ filling the warm air really epitomises summer, just as much as the smell of suntan cream and freshly cut grass. As does getting everybody together to eat, drink and be merry, for no other reason apart from the fact it’s summer! This year, invite the family over, dust the BBQ off and get making some Pimms for a magical evening spent with your nearest and dearest. Impromptu Jet-away No plans for a trip away yet but have time when you could jet-off? A weekend in Barcelona, a late deal to a gorgeous Greek island or fly up to Edinburgh for a few days! Not only is getting away from it all good for focus, it also helps you to connect with your loved ones and think more creatively too. With Gatwick on our doorsteps, jetting away couldn’t be simpler! Grab that passport and go! Beach Getaway Don’t want to travel too far? Living where we do, we’re spoilt for choice for beautiful beaches! In Sussex alone, there’s plenty of sandy or stony spots to spend a sunny summer’s day on. Head for busy, bustling Brighton for some seaside nostalgia, laid-back West Wittering or to the picturesque Camber Sands. Sussex’s coastal resorts are also known to be the sunniest places throughout the UK.

Where and what is on YOUR bucket list? We’d love to know! Tell us by emailing: Featuresdesk@mantramagazines.co.uk You could find your dream experience featured in a future issue! 52

CHILDREN

Fun awaits in the great outdoors The school holidays are upon us, and it’s time to let the kids embrace the great outdoors! By Shelley Baker

W

hen we were young, summer holidays were spent outside playing with friends, learning to ride our bikes and having adventures away from the stuffiness of the classroom. However, with a recent government survey finding that 74% of the 5-12-year-olds asked are spending less than 60 minutes outside per day, it’s clear that school holiday activities have sadly changed somewhat. But, what hasn’t changed are the benefits of being outdoors. From developing a love of nature to increased health and wellbeing to developing problem-solving skills and creativity, getting out and about is just as good for your child as it was for our generation –if not more important now we’re in such a technology-reliant world.

54

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

So this summer holiday, ask your kids to step away from Snapchat, put down their PlayStation and stop bingewatching on Netflix and embrace the great outdoors instead! A picnic has been a staple summer’s day fixture for years. It’s uncostly (just grab a few homemade sandwiches and head outdoors) and the perfect way of introducing your child to nature. Shockingly, though, according to a study (by the Eco Attractions Group), half of young children have never been on a picnic apart from in their back garden. If like 8 out of the 10 parents surveyed, you’ve been meaning to spend more time with your child outdoors but just haven’t got round to it, start packing up that picnic rug, grab those

sarnies and get outside; there are some seriously stunning scenic spots to uncover. Our favourites include the National Trust’s Nymans (near Haywards Heath), Bateman’s (Burwash) and Standen (East Grinstead). Being iconic National Trust properties means there’s plenty of wildlife, flowers and history to discover – giving an educational day out experience, far removed from a day spent on the sofa.

Does your child enjoy sports? The chances are that apart from the necessary once-aweek PE session at school, your child isn’t getting the one hour A DAY (yes, a day – quite a surprise isn’t it?) of aerobic exercise they need. If you’ve got a sporty child, why not enrol them in an outdoor football or netball camp for a few days over the holidays? Or, host your very own sports day! Invite your friends and their children for an afternoon of games in the garden. Not only will this get healthy hearts pumping but also see children communicating with others and utilising those problem solving skills too.

Did you know there are almost 8000 hectares of wildlife conservation in Surrey and 30 nature reserve sites in Sussex, just waiting to be explored?

The Surrey Wildlife Trust manages Hedgecourt (an ancient mill pond with the largest body of semi-natural open water in East Surrey) in Felbridge and Newdigate Brickworks (a reserve located on the site of a former claypit and brickworks), whilst the Sussex Wildlife Trust runs nature-based holiday camps in Tilgate Park, Crawley and reserves such as Old Lodge (in the Ashdown Forest), the beautiful Ditchling Beacon, Malling Down (with its rare flowers and butterflies) and many, many more. Whatever you do this summer – get outside and explore, the great outdoors is waiting for you!

HEALTH

Putting your best foot forward! Are your feet happy? Happy feet are healthy feet. On average our feet take 7,000 steps a day and are often the most overlooked and overworked parts of our bodies. Now’s the time to think happy feet!

M

By Jacob White

any people take their feet for granted, but our feet contribute massively to our quality of life - if you suffer from poor foot health, it’s less likely that you will engage in physical activity. The less you do, the less you will be able to do. As a result of inactivity the following problems can arise; a loss of muscle mass, reduced physical strength and a decreased endurance. All these lead to a higher risk of illness and injuries related to a sedentary lifestyle such as diabetes and heart disease but according to osteopath Ben Barker, there are easy daily exercises. Ben, who is an osteopath to

Aston Villa Football Club says: “There are exercises you can do each day to strengthen the muscles in the feet and ankles to prevent injuries, enhance mobility and strength.’ “Alternating for one minute, walk on your toes and then your heels and picking up small items with your toes are some of the easiest along with sitting with your feet flat and tapping your toes.” Research from the College of Podiatry illustrates that 9 out of 10 of us experience some element of foot problem with 1 in 5 admitting to suffering from foot pain often or consistently. One question often asked

is, what’s the difference between podiatry and chiropody? The short answer is nothing – they mean the same thing! The words are interchangeable. The UK is largely playing catch-up with the rest of the world by adopting the phrase podiatry. Traditionally chiropody has been seen as routine work but is, in fact, much broader. Podiatrists treat all lower limb pain which can include sports injuries such as shin splints and joint pain, and can carry out diabetes checks as well as ‘foot MOTs’ including toenail and skin conditioning.

Here are our top tips for keeping your feet in good condition: 1. After washing feet, make sure you dry them thoroughly, especially between your toes. Fungal organisms thrive on moisture and not having perfectly dry feet is an invitation for a fungal infection. 2. Regularly check your feet for any signs of peeling or scaling, which might be an indication of athlete’s foot. 3. To avoid ingrown toenails, be careful to cut your nails straight across, avoiding rounding the corners. If you notice any change in your toenails such as discolouration, this could signal a fungal infection.

56

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

4. Wear shower shoes in public areas such as swimming pools, gym showers or locker rooms – all of which are potential breeding grounds for fungi, resulting in foot infections. 5. Don’t hire footwear at sports venues, wear your own – which should ideally be breathable. They should also fit well. Tight-fitting shoes are another cause of long-term foot problems. 6. Contrary to popular belief, cotton socks aren’t the best when it comes to sweaty feet – a better choice is a sock made of 60-70% wool and 30-40% man-made fibre, or wool socks with a specialist liner sock inside.

The multi-use beauty product of the moment

The hot trend of coconut oil – what’s all the fuss about? By Shelley Baker

C

oconut oil provides a chemical-free, natural moisturiser for head-totoe softness and amazingly you can also use it as a shaving cream, lotion, hair conditioner and lip exfoliator. The hard and hairy coconut’s oil can also be consumed and according to studies it can help to control weight and cholesterol and fights off illness-causing bacteria. So whether you use coconut oil as part of your beauty regime, or whether you use it as a superfood, the range of benefits is amazing! Discover the fuss for yourself! Over the last few years, coconut oil sales have sky-rocketed. In fact, sales at Sainsbury’s alone were up 442% last year – and with the claims of being an all-purpose product for beauty and health, along with famous faces such as Gwyneth Paltrow waxing lyrical about the wonders of the natural oil, it comes as no real surprise. But just how can you incorporate it into your daily routine? We headed to the kitchen to uncover all… Majestic Moisturisation Renowned for hydration, coconut oil can quench thirsty skin, using just a small amount, and makes a fantastic all-over body moisturiser. This oil of the (skin) gods also is believed to be 15 times better for skin breakouts than benzoyl peroxide, thanks to its fatty acids and plethora of antibacterial and antifungal properties. Just dab onto any problem areas and voila; within a few days that niggling spot should be no more! Us ladies of a certain age can rejoice as coconut oil is also packed full of antioxidants (including vitamin E and vitamin A), which can slow down ageing and those dreaded wrinkles. Hooray!

How to use: simply rub a small amount of coconut oil between your fingers and apply to clean skin for a healthy, hydrated glow! Coconut-ty Conditioning While most of us may have used ‘coconut’inspired haircare products in the past to moisturise our tresses, our new favourite beauty must-have is proven to not only condition locks, but also prevent breakage and even promote hair growth! Make the most of this mighty oil by creating an overnight mask! Melt up to four tablespoons of the coconut oil (depending on hair length and thickness) between your palms and massage into wet hair. Then cover with a towel/ shower cap and leave overnight. Wash off and style as normal to reveal stronger sexy hair. Long Luscious Lashes and Eyebrows Just as with your hair; coconut oil is fast becoming a must-use product on eyelashes and eyebrows as the oil is gentle enough to use around the sensitive eye area and it helps lashes/ brows to grow and look volumised. Instead of buying that expensive mascara, make a natural boosting serum for a fraction of the price.

Method: Pour two tablespoons of coconut oil, castor oil and sweet almond oil into a container and mix well. Using either a cotton bud or clean mascara wand, apply the serum to the lashes and brows, before going to bed. In just a few weeks’ time, your brows and lashes should look thicker, fuller and healthier!

Cooking With Coconut Oil Whether you replace your current cooking oil with this super oil when frying or roasting, or choose to get creative and use it instead of butter on toast, adding it to smoothies and coffees (for an energy boost!) or even using it when baking ‘healthier’ snacks, the options are endless!

Must try recipe:

Vegan chocolate orange truffle bites. First, grease a small rectangular glass dish with a small amount of coconut oil and line with baking paper. Heat 200g of coconut oil until melted and then add in 100g of cocoa powder, whisking until smooth. Stir in 6tbsp of maple syrup, 2tsp of vanilla extract, 1tsp of orange extract and a pinch of salt until combined, then stir in almost all of the 60g of goji berries, leaving a small handful for decoration. Pour into the glass dish and finish with the remaining goji berries and refrigerate for an hour. Then cut into slices and enjoy!
