f you have an appetite to play tennis, whether competitively, for the first time or returning after a break this is a club which might just be game, set and match for you all at a reasonable price tag.

Membership Secretary Alan Davies said: “We’re a small, friendly club with a strong social play focus.”

Dating back to the Second World War the club’s philosophy is simple - get out and enjoy playing tennis in a friendly ambience which is bolstered by events held throughout the year for members.

“Our club social events bring a buzz to the membership. In December we are going to the Royal Albert Hall for the end of season tournament there, a trip subsidised by our social fund” Alan says.

Current active membership stands at around 250 competitive players can take part in the Horam League for men’s, ladies and mixed doubles matches, played at home and away starting at 6.30pm.

One of the annual highlights is a junior tournament, open to all junior members, grouped by age.

The tournament takes place in a single day and according to Alan, juniors are vital to club success.

The club has a proud and thriving junior set-up which runs all day on a Saturday each week, with young players totalling more than 60 each week playing against each other whilst having fun.

Alan said: “Rob Jones, our coach has done a great job building the club up. We’re keen to get as many youngsters involved as possible, and we hope our membership structure will help this.”

I have worked in Horticulture all my adult life having served as an apprentice at Brighton Parks and Gardens. I was even helping to train gardeners for them at the Sussex Parks Training Centre.

The gardens here at the Temple are some 28 acres excluding the buildings, and are a traditional English country garden with wonderful walks through the parkland. These walks vary from a small stroll around the Temple itself where we have traditional flower beds with spring and summer bedding displays to the magnificent Rhododendron walks which are breath taking when in flower in May. We have woodland walks that have Bluebells, Wood Anemones in, not to mention the trees, Oaks, Atlantic Ceders, Lime Trees, and Yew Trees the list goes on. Spring flowers include Daffodils, Tulips, and Forget-me-nots to name a few and if you know where to look little surprises like the Snake Head Fritillaries.

Because the garden houses the Temple it is a garden for quiet meditation, a place for prayer, a place to come and think through life’s challenges, a place to find peace and comfort. For this reason pets are not welcome here and we invite our visitors to respect the quiet space of others, also enjoying the garden and the peace and tranquillity found here. Families are always welcome and it is to be noted that uniting families is one of the main reasons for a temple.

Haywards Heath’s Dancing Queen Dozens of dancers from across Mid Sussex are dusting-off their dance shoes and showing a clean pair of heels thanks to one very passionate dance teacher from Haywards Heath.

Emily Barnes has been teaching for a little more than a year but is already teaching several groups and is now encouraging more of us to take to the floor to get fit and have fun!

he twinkle-toed mum of two is currently readying her dancers for a performance at the Firle Vintage Fair in August, which will is a tremendous accolade for Emily and her troop.

Emily said: “I was contacted by the event organiser to see if we could perform a demonstration which I jumped at the opportunity to do! It’s going to be a great event for the ladies.’

“There will be 12 ladies, including myself performing two routines – the first to ‘Sing, Sing, Sing’ and the second to ‘All That Jazz’ – a couple of the ladies had not previously tapped.”

The 37-year-old mum from Haywards Heath teaches adult classes in classical, ballet, tap and jazz for all levels at venues across Mid Sussex.

She was trained in dance and musical theatre at Laine Theare Arts and taught dance to both adults and children in her hometown of Worcester before running her own specialist dance retail store in Scotland which had an onsite clinic and pointe fitting service.

Emily said: “Juggling being a mum to two children under the age of three and a dance teacher can at times be a challenge, but it is most definitely not a chore – I love it!”

As her classes grow in popularity, Emily is keen to promote the benefits of dance to health and wellbeing, with the latter not always recognised by prospective students.

“The hard work I have put in to get the classes up and running is starting to pay-off, one great way of spreading the word and engaging with potential dancers is Facebook.’

“I get lots of people of all abilities and experience contacting me – some, who have never danced, and some who may not have danced for some 30 or 40 years,” Emily said.

Before a new student joins a class Emily contacts the student to decide which class would best suit them – based on needs and experience.

“Dance is a discipline as well as an art form and as such it teaches you a lot about your body” Emily adds.

Anne Powys-Lybbe an SOE hero

A

fter the fall of France in 1940, a new fighting force was hastily improvised by Churchill to a wage a secret war and to ‘set Europe ablaze’.

The character of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) was dare-devilish - the agents underwent intense training, learning how to kill silently, how to survive torture and how to use explosives and weapons.

Anne Powys-Lybbe, a late Horsted Keynes resident, was born into a Dutch Naval family and spent her childhood in Saint Kitts in the West Indies.

When she was eight years old, her family moved to England.

In September 1939, aged 18 Anne was doing a secretarial course in French Shorthand, had many friends and loved her adventurous youth.

On September 4 1939 Neville Chamberlin announced that Britain was at war with Germany and from that day onwards her life changed forever.

Anne joined the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service, was issued with an unflattering khaki uniform and found herself

in trouble for not polishing her buttons!

She was sent to Edinburgh for military training and had to undergo arduous exercises, marches and lectures.

Once completed, Anne was posted across Britain and ended up working as a War Correspondent.

She conducted talks in cinemas and halls, encouraging women to join the service, and did background checks on people to make sure that they hadn’t had past involvement with enemy nations.

Realising that Anne could communicate in French, a colleague asked her to sign the Official Secret Act, and offered her a job in the Special Operations Executive.

Her first assignment was skydiving into Germanoccupied France and staying in safe houses provided by brave French families.

She was a courier with a fake identity and taught the Maquis how to blow up trains, shoot to kill, make explosives and to boost morale in the troops.

In Paris, her job was to deliver coded messages to Allied soldiers, these operations would be carried out with the highest level of secrecy.

One night Anne was captured by German soldiers and narrowly escaped death when RAF bombs started to fall nearby.

They ran for their lives and didn’t look back. - leaving

France was another matter. At nightfall, the SOE would light flares to guide the Lysander ‘Lizzie’ planes to their hiding spot.

Anne had a tremendous depth of gratitude to the brave pilots who risked their lives to rescue them while being shot at from German Flak towers.

Anne remembered thinking ‘Will we ever see London again?’ They did, but many lost their lives in the SOE. Soon the British Air Force infiltrated further into Germany; the Russians were advancing from the East and the British Army fought from Italy.

The SOE missions had played an important part in the liberation of Paris, Brussels and ultimately the final victory of the Second World War. Anne lived to see these liberations, but without the strength and remarkable courage of those who served in the SOE, our victory would have been far harder to achieve.

Anne’s attitude to working for the SOE epitomises her: ‘I don’t want to fight, I hate killing as much as the next person. But I’ll fight an idea like Nazism.’

Phil Payne – Postmaster turned marathon master!

P

hil Payne is a postmaster in the Ardingly Post Office and describing him as a ‘tough guy’ is something of an understatement.

Phil played football at a professional level for six years before he changed direction.

In 2010, a friend offered him a last minute place as a contender in the Brighton marathon on the 18th April.

Most competitors had started their training months in advance, but Phil didn’t have the time. He blundered in at the deep end, competed and absolutely loved it! With the crowd cheering him on, Phil managed to run a respectable time of 3hrs and 47 minutes.

Six years on and Phil owns nineteen scrapbooks filled to the brim with mementoes of his achievements which remind him that he can succeed if he puts his mind to it.

When Phil is not working at the Post Office, he is either training or competing in races all over the world.

His favourite race was the ‘Maratona di Roma, 2013’ running through the old city and passing incredible sights like the Vatican and finishing by the Colosseum.

Another memorable event glued into his scrapbook was the Athens Authentic marathon in Greece with an ancient course established after the Battle of Marathon in 490BC. Phil decided to use this event as a training exercise and with a bag that weighed 8 kilos Phil ran to success and proudly crossed the finish line.

In 2015, Phil undertook his greatest challenge yet. Along with 1,400 other runners he ran a staggering 156 miles across the Sahara desert in searing 54-degree heat (129ºF!) ‘The temperature was off the scale, we were just trying to survive!’ Phil said.

He kept on running despite suffering from severe blisters and relentless weather conditions including sandstorms.

rescuing his kit from the thick clouds of sand, he confessed that he nearly gave up, ‘It takes a lot to break me, but I found it incredibly tough. I always listen to my body and it will tell me if I need to stop, but I will keep running as long as I physically can.’

Phil managed to defy his mental barriers and he kept running through the barren desert alongside his idol, Sir Ranulph Fiennes OBE, who, at age 72, is recognised as the

greatest living explorer, and holds many awards including climbing Mount Everest and The Artic Solo Exhibition.

Forty-eight hours later, a battered and bruised Phil crossed the finish line and stood as a symbol of tireless effort, stamina and the breaking of physical and mental barriers. ‘It was pure grit and determination that got me through it. I felt incredible as I hobbled across the finish line. I had survived the hardest race in the world.’

Phil runs to raise money for the NSPCC and St Peter and James Hospice and has raised around £20,000 overall. ‘I can’t express how much I appreciate all of the support I have had in the past six years’ he says.

At the end of November 2016, Phil will be cycling thirty hours on a bike at the Dolphin Leisure Centre in Haywards Heath to help fundraise for the NSPCC.

Vivien Leigh: Public Faces, Private Lives

A

new exhibition that explores the life of one of Britain’s most iconic and beautiful actresses, Vivien Leigh, has opened at the National Trust’s Nymans, the family home of her favourite costume designer, Oliver Messel.

The exhibition includes over 100 pieces on loan from the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Vivien Leigh archive, from costumes and sketches to photographs and scripts.

A 1943 letter from Leigh to the designer shows the bond between them: “I have of course told Pascal (Gabriel Pascal, director of Caesar and Cleopatra) that nobody in the world must do the costumes except you.”

One of the highlights of the exhibition is the magnificent headdress Messel made for Leigh’s performance as Cleopatra in the film. Messel was considered the greatest theatre designer in the world but the strict wartime rationing of materials tested his creative skills to the limits. The result is a masterpiece on screen, but is created mainly from wax, wire, glass, beads and leather. The headdress is on show alongside Leigh’s Cleopatra costume, both of which have never previously be displayed.

This is the first exhibition created to showcase both the professional and personal life of Leigh, who was immortalised in the film Gone with the Wind (1939). Amongst the correspondence to Leigh is a letter from Judi Dench at the start of her own career: “It [a letter from Leigh] has been read and re-read at least three hundred times and is one of my most treasured possessions.” In contrast, private love letters sent to Vivien Leigh by Laurence Olivier can also be seen.

Theatre costumes worn by Vivien Leigh are a particular focus, including a stunning red Christian Dior gown from Duel of Angels (1958) and the headdress from her role as Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1937).

Keith Lodwick, V&A curator of the exhibition said: “I am delighted that the exhibition is being hosted by Nymans, the Messel family home. Leigh and Messel were great friends and their creative work resulted in two of Leigh’s most celebrated roles. Vivien Leigh remains an enduring icon of stage and screen and the objects on display provide a fascinating insight into her personal life and career.”

Living with dementia

T

he term ‘dementia’ is used to describe the symptoms that occur when the brain is affected by specific diseases and conditions.

There are many different types of dementia, both inherited and non-inherited. The most common forms of dementia include Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, frontal lobe dementia and Lewy bodies.

People living with dementia can experience many different symptoms, including loss of memory, confusion, problems with speech and understanding.

These symptoms can differ from person to person depending on the type of dementia they have.

It is important to create a safe and supportive environment where people with dementia can live comfortably, maintain their independence and not feel restricted. As one of the symptoms of dementia can be confusion, it is a good idea to make everything easily recognisable. Colour contrasts are often a quick and effective way of helping areas stand out.

Surrounding a person with photos or images to trigger some of their favourite memories may also help them feel more comfortable. Reminiscence can be a great tool for therapy to help someone feel relaxed, safe and connected with the people around them.

Access to the outside space is also important as it provides the opportunity for exercise, fresh air, relieves tension and anxiety and offers personal space for reflection and privacy. Spending time outside in a garden has been shown to positively affect a person’s emotions and improve their sense of well-being.

If a person’s dementia means that they need specialist care or support and no longer wish to live independently in their own home, there are a lot of different care options available designed to meet their changing needs.

Care homes like Greenacres and Ridgemount in Banstead, for example, can provide specialist care for residents living with dementia.They have a range of distinguishing features such as additional staff with advanced dementia training and dementiafriendly design elements within the home.

Do something incredible this year!

One local charity would like to give you the opportunity to do something incredible this year – not only will it give you a great sense of achievement but will help an extremely worthy cause.

Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity based in Billingshurst is organising a walk on Saturday, September 17 to raise money for the charity’s work supporting babies and children with cerebral palsy.

There will be two sponsored walk distances – one of 35km (taking around

8 – 9 hours) and one of 12km (taking around 2 – 3 hours) – so the choice is yours as to which is most suitable.

The walk takes in the beautiful South Downs, starting at Arundel Castle before concluding at Devil’s Dyke, just outside of Brighton and is open to anyone who likes walking or a challenge.

The charity has organised an exclusive mystery prize draw for fundraisers who reach the £100 target.

Summer Pests:

The Unwelcome Houseguest!

Summer is a time for entertaining, but some houseguests are never welcome – we’re talking fleas!

By Jacob White Pets can catch fleas from just about anywhere including already infested areas or other animals.

They leap onto them and feed on their blood, and within 24 hours they can lay up to 200 eggs a day.

They won’t all hatch on your pet either, after 2 - 3 weeks some will hatch on your sofa or carpets, in your pet’s bed or in your garden, and the cycle starts again!

What are the signs my pet has fleas?

You may see one on your pet – if you do, there will be more!

There might be dark coloured specks in their coat when you groom – these may be flea droppings Scratching or itching needs investigation Bald patches are another sign (though other conditions can cause this too) Flea bites on family members

If you suspect a flea problem, then a visit to the vet is always a good idea - they’ll be able to prescribe the correct treatment for your pet and also help with products to treat your home.

A two-pronged approach is vital to stopping the hatching cycle. Treat all of your cats and dogs and your home, otherwise, if they have eggs, these will still hatch and will start the cycle over again!

Mediterranean Magic

I

f you can’t get away this year, how about creating your own Mediterranean hotspot in your garden? Even if you do manage to escape to the sun for a week or two this year, you’ll still have the rest of the summer at home and a little slice of Italy, France or Greece outside your back door will bring happy memories flooding back.

The first thing to do is to choose the sunniest spot available – it’ll not only make sitting out there more enjoyable, but will also mean that you can install some serious sun-loving plants too.

Painting the nearby house, shed or garage wall with white masonry paint will help to create the right atmosphere.

At the same time it will help to reflect our sunlight – often a bit washed out compared to more southern climes - so providing a stronger light for the type of plants that appreciate it.

Mediterranean gardens often make full use of the walls and any other vertical surfaces, so put up hanging baskets, pots and wall baskets and cram them full of plants.

Plants in pots are a must and if possible choose stone or terracotta containers.

If you want to make brand new pots look more weathered

try painting them with a solution of plain yoghurt as this will help to encourage rapid colonisation by mosses, algae and lichens.

Any new hard landscaping such as wall, paths or patios and terraced surfaces will look best in natural stone and there are now also terracotta tiles available for use in the garden.

Terracotta tiles can also have a storage-heater effect too – after a long, hot day they will have absorbed heat and this will then be released gradually in the evening.

Add interest to a vertical surface by planting a vine. They have attractive leaves and there are plenty to choose from that will fruit well in our climate.

You may not be able to create your own vintage but the vines will look particularly authentic when draped with a few bunches of grapes.

Glazed tiles, wall-hangings and the odd ornament or two can also add to the Mediterranean look, but make sure you choose items that won’t be instantly bleached by the sun.

Try growing your own oranges or lemons. With our generally milder winters some gardeners are even managing to keep these plants outside all year round with only the

minimum of protection.

Growing your citrus tree in a good-sized terracotta pot means that you can move it into a more protected spot if necessary.

With their wonderful silvery grey leaves and their often rather untidy or gnarled shape, olives too are a plant well worth considering.

Olives are best grown in a large container unless you have a warm garden and a very well-drained soil as they hate winter wet.

Some plants just spell out Mediterranean Magic – try geraniums and pelargoniums, aeoniums and sempervivums, rosemary, thyme, oregano and pretty well anything with silvery foliage.

Go for the brightest coloured flowers and your new holiday destination will also benefit from a subtle Mediterranean aroma too.

Ingredients 60ml gin 1 tsp grated root ginger Ice cubes 330ml can Cawston Press Sparkling Rhubarb

Ingredients 200g strawberries, hulled and chopped 1 tbsp caster sugar 2 scoops Waitrose Alphonso Mango Sorbet 330ml can Cawston Press Sparkling Rhubarb

Method 1. In a jug, stir the gin and ginger together, then cover and chill for up to 24 hours until ready to serve.

Method 1. Place the strawberries and sugar in small pan and heat very gently for 10 minutes until the strawberries are very soft and pulpy.

Press through a fine sieve and leave to cool until ready to serve.

COOKS TIP

2. Strain the gin into 2 tall glasses and add a scoop of ice cubes to each. Top up with the sparkling rhubarb and serve.
