Sing for a Cure Following the success of Sing for a Cure 2015, Sussex police officer Matt Cowling decided to organise another jam-packed evening of musical performances with a talented company of performers ranging from 10-54-years-old.

ing for a Cure ‘Timeless’ 2016 will be a night of classic songs from Stevie Wonder to Coldplay and much more, all performed with by talented live band called ‘Too many Charlies’ and a company of singers.

The event will take place on October 2 at the Capitol Theatre in Horsham. Tickets are £14 per person and are available at the box office or online at www. thecapitolhorsham.com/whatson/allshows/sing-for-a-cure/.

Matt has received sponsorship from Martin & Co, a local letting agent for the evening and every penny raised will be donated to the JDRF charity.

Matt’s son was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at seven years old and since, has had to manage this challenging condition by himself with the help of his parents. Matt once told him that he must control

the condition and not let it control him.

Type 1 Diabetes is a condition where the pancreas ceases to produce insulin, the causes of which are being researched by teams supported

by JDRF. A ‘hypo’ occurs when the blood sugar is too low whereas, a ‘hyper’ happens when the blood sugar raises too high which can lead to serious health conditions if not treated.

Matt likened blood sugar control to watching his son walk a tightrope, “he can’t afford to lose his balance and fall off.

Otherwise there will be serious consequences.’

In his professional career, Matt likes to be in control, and he expressed how helpless he feels and how difficult it is for a parent to watch their child struggle with a condition that can’t be cured.

to take control and fundraise for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, a charity in which his son is an ambassador for.

In 2015 the Sing for a Cure exceeded their fundraising goal and raised £4,500for JDRF as well as awareness for Type 1 diabetes.

Within the company, there are members who also suffer from type 1 and like Matt’s son, have learned to manage the condition independently.

A saddening misjudgement is that they have type 1 diabetes because they eat too many sweets and have an unhealthy diet – this is far from the truth and Matt hopes that by raising awareness, it will discourage misinterpretation.

Sing for a Cure is an organisation that Matt is passionate about, and he holds weekly rehearsals with the company in order to make the show as best as it can be! On the night, all the hard work is worth it.

The event provides a platform for talented performers to showcase their work through an eclectic selection of songs that will get everyone up onto their feet!

Everyone who takes part either backstage or on stage are voluntary professionals and Matt is really grateful for the continuous dedication and support they have given.

Prior to retirement Ian Waller was a professional genealogist with over 30 years’ experience in English research. He is a former Chairman of AGRA (The Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives) the body which represents professional genealogists throughout England and Wales.

He is a Fellow of the Society of Genealogists and formerly a Trustee and chairman of the Education Comittee. He has puclished several books in the Society’s “ My Ancestor” series including My Ancestor was an Argricultural Labourer, My Ancestor was a Mormon, My Ancestor was in the Royal Navy snd My Ancestor was a Leather Worker.

He currently serves as a Family Search Support Missionary for the LDS Church.

He has taught Family History at both basic abd advanced levels at various adult education centres in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire and currently lectures and runworkshops at amany family history societies, U3A Groups and other organisations interested in local, social and family history.

Those identities emerge when we use the challenges and successes our forebears experienced to overcome our own challenges and create our own successes.That could mean we learn from their mistakes and improve ourlives, or that we learn from their success and model their lives, or that we do both.

NHS Chat Health

he school nursing service has recently introduced a new way for children and young people to contact them with any problems they may wish to discuss.

Chat Health is an award-winning textmessaging service for people in education aged 11-19 years. It is an accessible way for young people to get advice and support about health related issues.

Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust is always seeking ways of improving the service that they provide, and they became aware of the Chat Health service after attending a professional conference last year.

School nurses who are qualified nurses with training to support the health needs of children and young people decided to make the Chat Health service available in Brighton and Hove and West Sussex.

School nurses are aware that more and more young people use mobile phone devices to administrate their daily lives. So they wanted to use that medium that was familiar to young people for them to contact their school nurses with any questions or advice. As well as this service, school nurses still visit schools where there is an opportunity for young people to talk to them face to face if they so wish.

The help that is provided ranges from medical and health concerns, sexual health, emotional health and wellbeing, bullying and relationships, healthy eating and any other general concerns.

Sometimes it can be embarrassing for a young person to seek the help of a health professional in a school and by using the confidential texting service it allows them to stay anonymous.

Chat Health went live on April 11 this year, and the service has been a huge success so far. In the first five weeks, the team received, and replied to, six hundred and fifteen messages from students across West Sussex.

According to the Office for National Statistics almost one in five young people suffers from anxiety and depression in the UK. There are many different causes of mental health problems,

and they are often complex and not necessarily attributable to one particular cause.

However, seeking help and advice can be the first step towards feeling good and confident. The school nurses are very well equipped to support people with emotional health difficulties and can provide the appropriate advice and can signpost to other suitable services if they feel that this is necessary.

Chat Health has been promoted widely throughout West Sussex, including school assemblies, posters and leaflets. At present, a text message will be charged at the rate of your current network provider.

However, there are plans to create a Chat Health smartphone app that will enable young people to send instant messages within their existing data plan at no additional cost.

Combining the use of a medium such as text messaging with the skills of school nursing staff is an innovative way to meet the mental and physical health needs of young people.

The contact number for West Sussex is 07480 635424. And young people can message the service at any time, and the message will be read and answered by a school nurse between Monday and Friday from 9am to 4:30pm.

The Somme and Sussex 100 years on…

The First World War, the Great War, the war to end all wars, left a lasting legacy of loss which touched communities the length of the country.

Sussex was no different and with the centenary of the outbreak of the Battle of the Somme commemorated last month, here’s how you can learn more.

he booming sound of artillery at the Battle of the Somme is said to be heard clearly on the Sussex coast - the noise of the guns routinely crossed the channel and the loudest was on July 1, 1916.

The day is now viewed as the single worst day in the history of the British Army. On that day by sunset, more than 57,470 men had become casualties, of which more than 19,240 were dead.

Whether keeping the memory of the conflict alive or bringing the reality of war to the attention of a new generation, as the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme arrives, it has never been easier.

The key collection at the West Sussex Records Office is that of the Royal Sussex Regiment an extensive collection consisting of documents and photos, which was donated by the Regimental Museum.

If you are trying to trace an officer or soldier who served in the Royal Sussex Regiment during the First World War, here are some of the main sources available at the West Sussex Records Office:

Making waves in Haywards Heath

By Jacob White s the Olympic Games get under way in Rio de Janeiro, there’s never been a better time to get involved in sport whatever your age and ability, and one group in Haywards Heath that is dedicated to getting us more involved in sport is the Dolphin Ladies Swimming Club.

Swimming has a rich history at the Olympics and is one of the most popular events.

Britain has enjoyed its fair share of success in the pool too with stars of games-gone-by including medallists Rebecca Adlington, Anita Lonsbrough and David Wilkie.

Should you be thinking of learning to swim as an adult, improving your swimming strokes or build-up stamina and technique, the Dolphin Ladies Swimming Club will help you achieve your aim - whether you’re a mum, working parttime or retired.

There is a class for all abilities at the Dolphin Leisure Centre on Tuesday mornings with

members encouraged at each level, with shallow water for beginners, moving-on to lengths for the more proficient - and the club boasts many who are.

Founded in 1977 by Jeanne Izod initially only 12 ladies signed-up to join the first class at the Dolphin Leisure Centre in Haywards Heath but as time went by swimmers themselves trained as teachers and the club went on to welcome new members.

Stephanie Wilson, of the club, said: “Membership increased rapidly during the early years.

Swimmers were encouraged to take the ASA Swimming Teachers qualification, thus helping us to hire extra pool time and shorten the waiting list.”

The 1980s and 1990s saw the club open branches in both Burgess Hill and Ardingly, sadly the Burgess Hill branch folded in 2002 but the Ardingly branch goes from strength to strength and according to Stephanie it’s the sense of difference that stands out.

“We differ from many swimming clubs for adults in that it is for ladies only, something our founder thought necessary due to many women not wishing to swim in a public session. We are a unique club to which all our teachers are committed” Stephanie added.

The club has now taught nearly 2,000 ladies since 1977, with more than 80 members qualifying as swimming teachers and currently 20 continue to teach on a regular basis. The club supports local charities by raising money at its AGM and swimathons.

The Red Arrows Return!

The Red Arrows will return this year to the world’s biggest free seafront airshow to be held in Sussex. Attracting crowds of thousands, Airbourne: Eastbourne International Airshow boasts a two-mile flying display line along the Sussex resort’s seafront and is a weekend not to be missed!

eaturing the best in military and civilian aviation with display teams including the much-loved Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, better known as the Red Arrows once again taking to the skies this year those in attendance in Eastbourne will be treated to some show-stopping displays between 11 - 14 August.

Airshow visitors will also have the chance to see the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight on all four days, in a year which marks the 80th anniversary of the Spitfire and the 75th year of the Lancaster Bomber. The Red Arrows will take to the skies on Friday and Saturday much to the delight of event organisers.

Eastbourne Borough Council Lead Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Enterprise, Cllr Margaret Bannister said: “We are delighted to hear that airshow favourites, the Red Arrows have chosen to return to Airbourne for two great displays this year, which will no doubt attract many thousands.”

In 2015, the culmination of the 12-hour Super Saturday extravaganza was a twilight pyro-aerobatics, Scouting For Girls on stage and a firework display. 12,000 people watched the chart-topping band from the beach stage alone, with thousands more lining the seafront to see the firework spectacular.

The King Air, a multi-engine pilot trainer, part of No. 3 Flying Training School and based at RAF Cranwell, will fly on the Saturday and Sunday with Saturday being what organisers have called as Super Saturday - last year it celebrated its busiest ever day with thousands of spectators visiting the event.

Eastbourne Borough Council Senior Head of Tourism and Enterprise, Phil Evans said: “ It was fantastic to see so many families enjoying the show and many more around town dining into the evening.

The atmosphere on Super Saturday was amazing; we’ve never seen the seafront look so vibrant.”

Now in its 24th year, the event is celebrating a recent haul of national awards including Tourism Event of the Year 2015/16 at the Beautiful South Awards and the UK’s Best FREE Airshow by Airscene.

The event isn’t just about scooping national awards; As in 2015 this year will see more than 200 volunteer bucket collectors out in force, with collections by the Rotary Clubs of Sovereign Harbour and Hailsham, along with support from the clubs of Eastbourne, Eastbourne AM, Eastbourne Sovereign and Beachy Head.

Roast Cod with Cucumber and Radish Salad Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 10 minutes to 12 minutes Total time: 25 minutes to 27 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients ½ x 235g bag Waitrose Ready Washed Spinach 4 x 150-175g Fresh Icelandic Prime Cod Fillets (skinless) 2 tbsp Cook’s Ingredients Toasted Seasame Oil 2 tbsp seasame seeds ½ large essential Waitrose Cucumber, sliced into matchsticks 75g essential Waitrose Radishes, thinly sliced 3 tbsp whte wine vinegar 1 medium avocado

Method

Preheat the oven to 220ºC, gas mark 7. Spread the spinach over a large non-stick baking tray.

Place the cod fi llets on top and drizzle with 1½ tbsp of the sesame oil. Season with cracked black pepper then place in the oven and bake for 10–12 minutes until the fish is just cooked through and opaque.

Meanwhile, place the sesame seeds in a frying pan and toast for 2–3 minutes until golden. Set aside.

In a bowl, mix the cucumber and radish slices with the vinegar and the remaining sesame oil.

Peel and slice the avocado.

Divide the avocado and spinach out between the plates.

Grow your own take-away

e all know that home-cooked food is better for us than a stream of takeaways, but then we all deserve a little self-indulgence from time to time. So why not save yourself the guilt (and some cash) and grow your own Chinese takeaway right here in your own garden?

No I haven’t turned cookery writer, but you can easily grow some of those tasty and crunchy vegetables that make the backbone of many a Chinese stir-fry... and the great thing is that oriental vegetables do well from late summer sowings, so it’s off to the garden centre (not the takeaway) you go!

Bean sprouts are so easy to grow you could almost do it with your eyes shut. The common types are sprouted mung-beans, and you can either buy packets of seed or a small packet of the beans themselves from your local health food store. They’ll come with easy cultivation instructions and before you know it you’ll have the beginnings of a stir-fry.

Mizuna has got to be one of the most attractive leafy vegetables you can grow. Its green leaves appear soon after sowing the seed in a pot or in open ground, and they add a great spicy flavour to your stirfry and also add a zing to salads and sandwiches.

Pak-choi

And where would your Chinese meal be without that delicious Oriental veg, pak-choi.

It’s another easy vegetable to grow late in the summer: just sow the seeds in a well-forked soil, water, and wait. Thin out as per the instructions of the seed packet (you can eat the thinnings too), then just pinch off the roots and pop the plants into the wok. Pak-choi also grows well in a container of multi-purpose compost.

Radishes add heat as well as crunch, and there are some lovely oriental varieties such as Mantanhong, which is a Britishbred Chinese variety with a superbly crunchy bright red-topink inner flesh and spherical white roots – great for colour and texture and with a sweet almost nutty flavour. Sow in open ground or pots from now until early September for cropping in a few weeks’ time.

Garlic is another essential ingredient. It’s not really the right time of year to plant garlic, but for an unexpected little extra take a few spare cloves and pot them in trays of compost. Keep the compost slightly moist and in a week or two the cloves will start to sprout. What you’re after here are the bright green foliage which adds a definitely garlicy flavour to stir-fries and a touch of colour as well.

Spring onions are another stir-fry component.You won’t get a fully mature crop for harvesting this year unless you’re extremely lucky; but what you will get is a super-young onion that will add both colour and intense flavour to the contents of your wok.

And finally, mushrooms will add a meaty texture to your home-grown vegetable stir-fry.

Kits for growing both oyster and field mushrooms are available in many garden centres or by mail order. It’s not always easy to get right, I know, but the challenge is definitely worth it when you have exotic mushrooms growing in your cellar, garden frame, greenhouse, or shed.

any people take their feet for granted, but our feet contribute massively to our quality of life - if you suffer from poor foot health, it’s less likely that you will engage in physical activity.

The less you do, the less you will be able to do. As a result of inactivity the following problems can arise; a loss of muscle mass, reduced physical strength and a decreased endurance.

All these lead to a higher risk of illness and injuries related to a sedentary lifestyle such as diabetes and heart disease but according to osteopath Ben Barker, there are easy daily exercises.

Ben, who is an osteopath to Aston Villa Football Club says: “There are exercises you can do each day to strengthen the muscles in the feet and ankles to prevent injuries, enhance mobility and strength.’

“Alternating for one minute, walk on your toes and then your heels and picking up small items with your toes are some of the easiest along with sitting with your feet flat and tapping your toes.”

Research from the College of Podiatry illustrates that 9 out of 10 of us experience some element of foot problem with 1 in 5 admitting to suffering from foot pain often or consistently.

One question often asked is, what’s the difference between podiatry and chiropody? The short answer is nothing – they mean the same thing! The words are interchangeable.

The UK is largely playing catch-up with the rest of the world by adopting the phrase podiatry. Traditionally chiropody has been seen as routine work but is, in fact, much broader.

Podiatrists treat all lower limb pain which can include sports injuries such as shin splints and joint pain, and can carry out diabetes checks as well as ‘foot MOTs’ including toenail and skin conditioning.

Here are our top tips for keeping your feet in good condition: 1. After washing feet, make sure you dry them thoroughly, especially between your toes.

Fungal organisms thrive on moisture and not having perfectly dry feet is an invitation for a fungal infection.

2. Regularly check your feet for any signs of peeling or scaling, which might be an indication of athlete’s foot.

3. To avoid ingrown toenails, be careful to cut your nails straight across, avoiding rounding the corners. If you notice any change in your toenails such as discolouration, this could signal a fungal infection.

4. Wear shower shoes in public areas such as swimming pools, gym showers or locker rooms – all of which are potential breeding grounds for fungi, resulting in foot infections.

5. Don’t hire footwear at sports venues, wear your own – which should ideally be breathable.

They should also fit well. Tight-fitting shoes are another cause of long-term foot problems.

6. Contrary to popular belief, cotton socks aren’t the best when it comes to sweaty feet – a better choice is a sock made of 60-70% wool and 30-40% man-made fibre, or wool socks with a specialist liner sock inside.
