Age UK West Sussex –

For people who love later life Age UK West Sussex is a charity dedicated to improving the lives of older people, ensuring that they love later life.

They share the vision and the mission of Age UK nationally and are one of 160 local partners across the UK.

he charity offers services to older people across West Sussex including five activity centres with a range of activities; two sets of community clubs; Home from Hospital and Take Home and settle services from the main hospitals in the county; Help at Home and an information and advice service plus a Trading company that sells age-related insurances.

In Haywards Heath, Age UK West Sussex has an activity centre in the heart of the town – The Redwood with great opportunities to socialise, learn new skills, keep active and enjoy delicious home-cooked lunches.

The centre is open to both the public and members from Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 4.00pm with an annual membership costing £25; alternatively a day membership costs only £2.

If you fancy a cup of tea and a natter, pop along to the café in the centre and try one of their delicious homemade cakes and fresh sandwiches, which are prepared daily and will surely tickle your taste buds! At 12.30pm every day, there is a two course, home-cooked meal available at a set price of £4.50. As well as enjoying the meal it is an excellent opportunity to meet new people.

The Redwood has a jam-packed timetable incorporating activities such as art and dance classes, Tai Chi, Zumba, bingo, computer lessons, bowls and much more. As well as group activities, the centre provides individual and professional

services to improve health and wellbeing including hairdressing, chiropody and massage therapy.

Door-to-door transport is available through Bluebird Community Transport.

Respite for carers is also available on two Saturdays a month at the Redwood Centre. The Elderberry Club provides an opportunity for carers to enjoy an activity, go out shopping or simply relax knowing that a dedicated team are caring for their spouse, relative or friend. The club meets on the second and fourth Saturday of each month from 10.30am to 4.30pm and costs £40 for the day, including a two-course hot meal.

Remember, remember the 5th of November

B

onfire Night’s fireworks painting the sky with a kaleidoscope of colours commemorate the attempts by 17th-century Catholic conspirators to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

On 5th November 2016, the Lindfield Bonfire celebrations will start at 6.30pm with a fancy dress competition at the King Edward Hall, followed by the famous torchlight procession through the village. On the Common, there will be a reading of the Bonfire Prayer and the lighting of the 135th bonfire in the village will take place, before ending the evening with a grand firework display.

The history began with the events on 5th November 1605, when Guy Fawkes, a Catholic member of the Gunpowder Treason Plot, was arrested. He had been guarding 36 barrels of explosives that had been placed underneath the House of Lords in hope to assassinate King James I. Thirteen plotters eventually were arrested, trialled and killed for their crimes against the staunch Protestant King.

As a result, people lit bonfires around London to celebrate the ongoing reign of the monarchy and since that day, it has become a predominately English state memorial that is particularly popular in Sussex.

The Lindfield Bonfire Society prides itself on its long-standing tradition to celebrate Bonfire Night, adding to the rich, historical heritage. The earliest records of the 5th November Bonfire Night celebrations date back to 1881, and it’s fair to say that some of the village people were very enthusiastic! Every year the quaint, medieval village of Lindfield was transformed into a fire-breathing hub of celebration as the townsfolk would light huge, memorial fires in remembrance.

There were customary street fires, torchlight processions; men would celebrate the Tar Barrel tradition that was customary after the Gunpowder Plot. They dragged burning, tar barrels through the High Street and on the 5th November riotous behaviour was regarded as ordinary to the townsfolk. For many years, there were three main bonfires: one on the Common, one outside the Bent Arms pub and a third, in front of the Red Lion pub.

These fires were fed by the

boisterous ‘bonfire’ boys, who wore Smugglers’ dress and who would burn just about anything that they could get their hands on including the Tollhouse gates, causing havoc for the local authorities!

During the patriotic celebration at the end of the Siege of Mafeking in 1900, things got out of hand when a wagon loaded with wood passed the bonfire outside the Bent Arms and the horses were set loose, resulting in the wagon itself and the wood being fed to the fire and destroyed.

The paintwork on the pub was left scorched and ruined, and about 20 men were fined half a crown each.

In 1894, the Lindfield Bonfire Society was formed with the aim of holding an organised display in the village every 5th November and has been run by volunteers ever since.

The society is non-profit making, relying on support from their members and the local community to help keep the free and family-friendly celebrations going.

VILLAGE LETTS

W

hen Toby Carrington made the decision to move from Brighton to Cuckfield with his wife Alison there were no rural specific letting agents available and this thought stayed with him for many years and resulted in him starting Village Letts, a new letting agency specialising purely in the letting of residential and commercial property in villages, hamlets and market towns.

Village Letts allows those looking to rent a property in one of the many villages and hamlets or market towns in Sussex to see what they have to offer in terms of the schools, bus and train links, local pubs, dog walks and so on via a comprehensive website.

“The information we wanted when we moved was down to ourselves to find out,” Toby explained.

“We were lucky as my wife Alison grew up in the neighboring village of Balcombe, but, for those who don’t know the areas, finding out more about the villages they are interested in can take up a lot of precious time. We hope to reduce that by supplying as much information on the villages as we can.”

Toby has been in the sales and letting industry for 30 years and lectures in Housing Law and Regulations to both

landlords and agents all over England and Wales - Toby’s expertise has led to some high profile appointments.

He was interviewed by Kate Falkner, one of the country’s leading independent property experts, on repairing obligations in letting and he trained the two deputy mayors under Boris Johnson, the course that all landlords and agents have to take if they want to work with the London local authorities.

He is currently part of a team training landlords and agents in Wales for the National Assembly under the Rent Smart Wales Scheme, so he certainly knows the business of letting inside and out.

“I understand what it is like to be a landlord,” Toby continued “I am one myself. I also know the importance of getting it right which is why we not only credit check every tenant, but we insure all of our rents throughout the term of the tenancy for free.”

Toby has had the idea of starting a rural specific letting agency for some time, but since he launched the company in May he tells us they have gone from strength to strength adding new villages as they go.

“It’s been really amazing how the business has taken off as well as being very interesting and good fun doing the research for the website. You find yourself driving through a

village or hamlet and suddenly you’re saying to yourself ‘I could live here’ and I think that’s how it starts for a lot of people when they realise they want that village lifestyle.”

Village Letts is obviously into the village scene and looks to promote activities and businesses on their site.

Toby explained: “We love the idea of villages telling us about what’s on, the history and encourage their involvement, we will happily publish their photos and write ups. We have listed a number of villages so far, and are expanding on it on a daily basis. We also want businesses to send in information about themselves and they’ll get listed for free, but obviously we are also looking for landlords. I hope that any landlords reading this will understand what we are trying to achieve, like what we are doing and want to use us.”

Tulleys Shocktober Fest Each October West Sussex comes alive with gloriously gruesome entertainment courtesy of Tulleys Farm’s award-winning Shocktober Fest, and this year, fans will not be disappointed!

Changing Rooms – Accessorise for the Season If you’re the type of person who quickly becomes bored with your living space, then accessorising for the seasons is perfect for you, and your bank balance. From bright and airy for spring and summer to warm and cosy for autumn and winter, here’s a look at how to create the perfect atmosphere for your home by ringing the changes with accessories.

By Nikki Relffe-Arnold Colour The simplest way to start is to choose a colour for each season. For spring think fresh colours such as bright greens, yellow or lemon shades.

Summer hues include blue, stripes in nautical or ice-cream colours, as well as pinks and corals. For Autumn go for rich oranges, greens and browns and moving into Winter choose whites, reds and burgundy, golds and silver.

Soft Furnishings For the speediest update to a room, change the cushions on your soft furnishings. Not only colour, but the texture will have an impact here. Move from lighter weight fabrics for spring and summer such as silk, cotton or linen, to heavier fabrics such as chenille or wool for the autumn and winter months.

Similarly, with throws, light cotton throws are perfect during spring and summer when the sun goes down, and you need to take off the chill off of the evenings. Once autumn arrives swap them for sumptuous chenille, crocheted, or cable knit throws to snuggle under.

Embracing Evergreens If you love your garden but don’t have the ability, time or inclination for tending it, then designing an evergreen garden is the perfect solution. Evergreens are a lot more versatile and considerably more attractive than you may have realised.

here are many reasons that might lead us to consider a low maintenance garden; with increasingly busy lives, or as we get older, we don’t have the ability to do quite as much in the garden. It’s worth looking at how we can adapt them to give just as much pleasure, but without the back-breaking work of maintaining them.

An evergreen garden will give you year-round colour, as well as adding structure to your garden. Plants can be used as hedging, edging, screening or specimen plants to create a garden for every occasion.

Create Privacy To create a living screen or fence for your plot then Conifers, Yew, Juniper, Holly, Boxwood, Photinia (and if you have lots of space), Rhododendrons are perfect plants choices.

If you want (or need!) an instant hedge it is now possible to buy boxwood plants, clipped in a rectangular or square shape, which give a mature hedge instantly when planted!

‘Atropurpurea’ (Dark purple-flowered periwinkle) which bears beautiful deep purple flowers to give a burst of colour to your borders.

Make an Entrance Junipers planted on both sides of your gateway or access to your path will give a bolder, more formal feeling. They will, however, need annual pruning! If space is limited, define your doorway or path with containers planted with Bay laurels.

Add Colour Of course, many evergreens also bear flowers!

To add more colour to your garden throughout the seasons, mix in Camellias, Pieris, Rhododendrons, Abelias and Daphne with your non-flowering structural plants to add interest and drama.

Add Fragrance For year round foliage with the added bonus of fragrance choose aromatic herbs such as Rosemary, Thyme, Marjoram, or Lavender.

Go to Ground To minimise the need for weeding plant evergreen ground covering plants and shrubs such as Euphorbia, Hebe ‘Pagei’ or Vinca minor

What to expect? A first appointment will last around 45 minutes to an hour, which will allow the osteopath to ask questions about your condition, your medical history and any medication you may be taking. They will then carry out a thorough examination, including asking you to make simple movements and stretches to assess your posture and mobility.

From this appointment, they will determine any ongoing treatment plan with you.

Treatments are hands-on involving skilled manipulation of the joints and spine and massaging of the soft tissues. They may recommend self-help exercises and offer advice to prevent recurrence or worsening of the symptoms.

Podiatrist/Chiropodist What do they do? A podiatrist treats a varied range of conditions of the feet and lower limbs. They also assist people to keep active and mobile, relieve pain and treat infections.

What to expect? At your first appointment, your podiatrist will take a full medical history, check your blood circulation and feeling in your feet. They may also ask you to walk so that they can assess the way you move your lower leg joints, before making a diagnosis and discussing a treatment plan with you.

Audiologist What do they do? An audiologist can diagnose, manage and treat hearing, tinnitus or balance problems by using technology and procedures to determine the extent of any hearing damage and identify the underlying cause.

What to expect? The audiologist will begin with taking a full medical history from you. They will then conduct a comprehensive test of your ears before carrying out other tests with audiometers, computers and other devices to assess the extent of hearing loss. There are many causes of hearing loss from a build-up of wax in the ears to age-related hearing loss, and the audiologist will be able at the end of your appointment to discuss their findings and decide on a treatment plan for you. This may be as simple as arranging for you to have wax removed from your ear canals, to fitting hearing aids.

Spiced orange & almond cake

This moist cake is gluten and dairy free and makes a lovely alternative to Christmas cake.

Ingredients

• 8 essential Waitrose Easy Peelers • Vegetable oil, for greasing • 5 medium Waitrose British • Blacktail Free Range Eggs, separated • 200g caster sugar • 250g ground almonds • 2 tsp Waitrose Signature Spice (ground) • 2 tbsp clear honey or maple syrup, to serve • A little icing sugar,for dusting

Method

1. Put 4 of the easy peelers in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to the boil and simmer for 25 minutes, then drain and cool slightly. Whizz to a purée in a food processor.

2. Preheat the oven to 180C, gas mark 4. Brush the base and sides of a 23cm springform cake tin with a little oil and line the bottom with baking parchment. In a large bowl, whisk the egg yolks and half the caster sugar until pale and fluffy. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites until they form stiff peaks, then whisk in the rest of the sugar.

3. Fold the puréed easy peelers, ground almonds and spice into the egg yolk mixture. Fold a quarter of the egg whites into the mixture to loosen it, then carefully fold in the rest. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 55-60 minutes, until a skewer inserted comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin.

4. Turn the cake out onto a serving plate. Peel the rest of the easy peelers and cut them into slices. Arrange on top of the cake and drizzle over the honey or syrup. Dust with icing sugar and serve.

It’s not just our dogs that benefit from the interaction, but us too, especially on days when we’re feeling stressed at work, as studies have shown that playing with or petting an animal can increase levels of the stress-reducing hormone oxytocin and decrease production of the stress hormone cortisol.
