East Grinstead's Sackville Water Tower

T

he Sackville Water Tower is one of the town’s most prominent Landmarks but do many people know its purpose past or present?

It’s an imposing view for those leaving the Chequer Mead Theatre and can be seen for miles around. East Grinstead builder, Steve Hainge, who owns Town & Country Construction, first set his sights on owning the tower in the early 1990’s when he was just 17-years-old.

Although not in a position to buy it at that time, when the building came up for sale again in 2011, he knew he had the determination and vision to see the project through. The tower was derelict with few windows intact and a leaking roof but Steve has transformed it into a unique family home. Spread across seven floors the interior has been designed to retain much of the original building and industrial character.

Constructed in 1914 by W.Vaux-Graham, who was

engineer to the East Grinstead Gas & Water Company, it was originally known as the Playfield Water tower. Following a fire in 1908, the council was concerned about the medieval buildings along the nearby High Street, which were timber framed. It was decided that a water tower should be built on the nearest open public space.

Built by Burgess Hill Builders, Messrs Norman & Burt, the construction took place on what was known as the ‘Playfield’, now a car park.

The Playfields original purpose was recreation for the town’s folk and whereby they could hang out their washing. The land was first owned by Earl De La Warr’s trustees but was bought by the Urban District Council for £50 in 1908. The water tank on top of the building could hold 30,000 gallons of water and was removed in 1998.

The Grade Two listed tower was used by the Home Guard during the Second World War,

even housing a machine gun which was mounted on the turret. Volunteers would climb the steep steps to the top to keep watch. Some of these ‘look outs’ left evidence in the form of etched initials and dates scratched into the turret wall.

It’s believed that the female volunteers were instructed to wear skirts despite the challenge of climbing the 80 feet up to the roof.

With breathtaking 360-degree views across the Sussex landscape, it is easy to see why it would have been a coveted position. Today, from the top, you can watch as the steam trains puff into town over the viaduct.

Painting the Forest

Ashdown Forest holds a special place in the heart of artist Juliet Murray.

F

or more than 20 years she has been selling her works from her idyllic home studio, which is only a short walk from the place where she gets her inspiration.

Her customers come from all over the country to buy her paintings, prints and cards depicting areas of the forest that are dear to their hearts.

“Some of them have moved to Australia or the US and come back to visit relations, and they want to take a bit of the forest back with them when they leave,” Juliet says. “The forest is such a wonderful, unspoilt, open place in an otherwise crowded part of the country,” she adds.

34years ago, it was initially going to be another step up the property ladder, but in the event, they didn’t want to leave.

Their sons, James and Nick, were born and lived there, although both have now left home.

“It is just an amazing place to live,” Juliet says. “There is nowhere better to see the seasons changing, and it is so quiet and peaceful. I can walk for an hour in the forest and not see anyone.”

Although Juliet enjoyed art at school, she didn’t start painting for a living until she was in her 30s.

She had been working as a bilingual secretary in the power, marine and construction industries when, in 1991, on impulse, she bought equipment and stock from a picture framer who was retiring. In search of customers she joined a local art class run by Royal Academytrained tutor Geoffrey Colbourne and soon realised there was a market for her work. “No one else in my family painted, although I found some sketches my grandfather had done so it must be in the genes somewhere,” she laughs.

Juliet started a bespoke framing business from her workshop, which she continues to run, selling her paintings and prints alongside it. At the last count, she had sold 600 original paintings and several thousand prints.

She says she never runs out of ideas for her paintings. “I go walking on the forest with my camera and a sketchpad.

Sometimes I taken an easel and start off the painting and then finish it back at the studio.”

As for the future, Juliet has no plans to stop painting. “I envisage finding more time for commissions and experimenting with different media,” she says.

“Whatever I do will doubtless be inspired by the landscape on my doorstep.”

An Evening with Terry Waite

I

n 1987 church envoy Terry Waite travelled to Lebanon to negotiate the release of several hostages but was taken captive himself and spent nearly five years incarcerated.

Following his release, he has devoted himself to writing, lecturing and working for charities and this month will be visiting East Grinstead’s Chequer Mead Theatre for the first time to talk about his life and experiences.

Before his appearance, he gave RH Uncovered an idea of what the audience can expect: What will your evening at Chequer Mead feature?

I have long experience of working in difficult situations. I have negotiated with General Amin in Uganda, Revolutionary Guards in Iran, Colonel Ghadaffi in Libya and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

It was in Beirut that I was captured and spent almost five years in total solitary confinement.

I’ll recount some of these experiences and also discuss the current situation in the Middle East, and stories about my life.

Will there be audience participation?

This year marks the 25th anniversary of your release from captivity in Beirut.

Do you still think about that period in your life?

I often think about it, but not in a negative way.

I have taken many positive learnings from the experience and will share some of them with the audience.

What did you learn most from those months held hostage and can it relate to what is going on in the world today?

This ground will be covered in my talk.

Through Hostage UK (which I jointly founded some years ago) we are currently working with many who have been seriously affected by the current situation. I will share some of my experiences on the night.

What else are you doing at the moment?

I have just returned from New Zealand where I have completed the sequel to my comic novel, The Voyage of the Golden Handshake. I believe that it is essential that we do not lose our ability to laugh even in the most terrible of situations.

This book was written to amuse myself and is similar to many of the stories I told myself when in captivity. It is a humorous novel and totally different from the serious subject of my address although I shall also speak about the role of humour. I have a book of poetry and prose ready

for the publisher. Taken on Trust, my first book which was written in my head during captivity, is going into the Hodder Classic editions this year and I have written a new chapter for it. I do a lot with Hostage UK, YCare working for young deprived people overseas, Emmaus for the homeless and many other things. I do not take money from the charities but earn my living by writing and lecturing. In the past week, I have given a speech to a sell-out lunch in Jersey, chaired a seminar for Hostage UK in London and lectured to 200 therapists in Liverpool. I am now en route to Japan to lecture aboard the QM2.

A taste of Italy

C

ooking and eating are two of life’s great pleasures… So what if you could do both and learn another language at the same time while exploring the tastes of another country?

That is what Anna Rigano offers at Kitchen Lingo, where lovers of good food can learn how to speak Italian while preparing and then eating delicious regional dishes.

It’s not just Italian – Anna, who has a degree in languages, offers similar courses in French, Spanish, German and even English from the kitchen of her Hammerwood home in East Grinstead. She has also just started classes for children to give them more skills.

Italian-born Anna, who has a daughter Isola, aged 16, started Kitchen Lingo two-years-ago.

“It was an idea I’d had for a long time,” she says.

“I took a degree in languages in Italy then lived in France for seven years before moving to London and then Hammerwood in 2002.

“I thought cooking was a good way for people to start learning a language, through the recipe and in an environment where they could pick up words and phrases one at a time.’

“I try to make it a bit cultural too, so we often read and talk about the region where the recipe comes from, learning more about its history, art, literature and music.’

“For instance, recently we were cooking tagliatelle and reading about Lucrezia Borgia.

Apparently a chef who was cooking for her, loved her long, curly, blonde locks so much that he created tagliatelle just for her, so that is where that pasta comes from.”

Small groups meet on a Tuesday for the threehour course, which involves cooking the recipe of the day and eating it for lunch afterwards.

“It doesn’t matter if people can’t speak any Italian. I have absolute beginners and I can make them understand and read instantly!” Anna says.

“It is all about the vowels – if you can pronounce vowels and syllables you can read and speak Italian.

The first word you learn when introducing yourself is ‘piacere’ which means ‘pleasure to meet you’, so you start immediately.”

Then there is the food, of course. “People come to learn how to cook and speak but eating together afterwards is a lovely social event and produces a great atmosphere.”

Anna is hoping that children will get as much out of the courses as adults. “At the moment I have children aged from 12 to 16 coming along,

but it is open to children from four upwards.’

“It is great fun for them and I am really pleased with the way it is going.”

Green Fingered and Creative in West Hoathly and Sharpthorne

H

ave you ever seen a handkerchief size garden or witnessed the true beauty of medieval costumes first-hand?

Well these are just some of the many delights you can experience on the third Garden and Art Trail in Sharpthorne and West Hoathly this June.

Following two successful years, the organisers are more ambitious and have a host of exciting artistic additions to keep both the green fingered and creative happy. With more than 20 gardens to visit, several of which are new, you won’t be disappointed. Marvel at the intricate designs of herbal knot gardens or the vast fruit orchards that span acres of land. There will also be an abundance of tea and cakes on offer to enjoy along the way!

Among the features to look out for will be wood turning at Highcroft Rd, a woodland walk at Leam’s End, a plant sale at Maytrees on Top Rd, an open Pottery Studio at Providence Cottage on North Lane and a totem pole at the end of one Hamsey Road garden. The 8ft plus sculpture illustrates the garden owner’s life and is carved from green oak by local carvers at The Woodland Centre. There will also be some stained glass pictures and other artwork created by the homeowner alongside a stall promoting Dementia awareness. The Sussex Archaeological Society will also be opening the Priest House and Garden, one of West Hoathly’s hidden gems.

Local artist and musician, Caz Greenwood, who is responsible for organising the art at this year’s event will be showcasing her work and etchings of local village scenes. One of which was chosen to be displayed at the Royal Academy’s 2015 Summer Exhibition.

Margaret Watson, the well-known local harpist, took everyone by surprise last year when she displayed her impressive collection of historical costumes in her garden in Sharpthorne. This year, she will be moving them to St Margaret’s Church to get the full effect of the medieval surroundings.

For anyone interested in this period of history or any aspiring costume designers, this is well worth a look.

Ploughman’s Lunches will be served in the church from 12.30pm – 2.00pm and teas will be served all day at Hoathly Hill (profits to Hoathly Hill Trust), The Vicarage, Duckyl’s Holt and The Willows, 15 Hamsey Road (profits to Neil’s Club for Young Onset Dementia).

Tickets with a map will be available in advance from Sharpthorne Café, Cost Cutters, The Cat Inn and on the day from the gardens and the church.

Admission price, £5 with accompanied children, free. The monies raised from this event will go to St Margaret’s Church Building Fund, Pericles and other local organisations.

Parking is available in West Hoathly School Playground, Finch Field, Hook Lane Car Park and at some gardens and minor roads.

19th May 2016, Thursday, 10.30am-3.30pm New Horizon’s Garden and Produce Fair St Catherine’s Hospice To take place in the grounds of Cuckfield Park.

The prestigious fair has become known as West Sussex’s mini ‘Chelsea’, bringing together wide-ranging traders, specialist plants, garden products and local food.

Last year’s fair attracted more than 800 visitors browsing stalls. Since 1989, the appeal has raised more than £2.5 million for St Catherine’s. Entrance £4 and a stall preview ahead of public entrance, from 8:30am £12.50.

Mantra Magazines, originally named RH10 Uncovered, started life in May 2006 on a dining room table, before a spare room, then a garden shed, which eventually was out-grown too.

They expanded from just one title covering the RH10 postcode to now six titles and the company has worked out of offices in Rowfant since 2010.

Community and family are core values at the heart of the business. In the early days, it was staffed exclusively by family members; alongside Nikki and Matthew were Nikki’s niece Nadine and Matthew’s brother David. Nikki’s late aunt Theresa even came trans-Atlantic from Vancouver to help sell the vision of the magazine to local businesses for six months!

Making Memories: Nikki and Matthew laugh as they recall the time Matthew was ‘rescued’ whilst taking a photo for the launch issue’s front cover. He was lying on his back in a flower bed at Snowhill Garden Centre, trying to get the perfect shot of some blossom when an elderly couple thought he had collapsed! Nikki chuckles as she recalls “They rushed to his aid but in fact he was simply trying to find an angle of the blossom so as to get the sky in the background. Certainly a memorable moment for me.

Still makes me laugh ten years-on!”

The number of staff has since grown from just two in 2006 to 12 in 2016. In addition, there are a further eight community writers.

4Sight Ramblers (Mid Sussex South) Celebrate their 5th Birthday Next month is the fifth birthday of 4Sight Ramblers (Mid Sussex South), a 30-strong member group of walkers who are blind, partially sighted or volunteers.

Leaders Anne Tomlinson and Jane Aston came together when they recognised blind and partially sighted people had difficulties getting out in the countryside.

The group meets on the first Monday of the month at a chosen venue and walks for

Everybody who needs one gets assistance from a volunteer guide who helps with the walk and the post-walk lunch, volunteer drivers also provide transport.

With summer hopefully around the corner, there are a few basic checks that can be done to help keep you on the road.

Coolant Believe it or not, the same stuff that prevents your engine from freezing during the long winter nights also helps stop it overheating during long summer days.The biggest reason for summer breakdowns is overheated vehicles. So check your coolant level weekly, also get your local garage to test the strength of the coolant mix if your car hasn’t been serviced recently. Check the condition of the auxiliary drive belt (also known as the fan belt), too. If your car does overheat, wait at least an hour for the engine to cool down before attempting to remove the radiator/ coolant tank cap.

Fans/Air Conditioning It’s unlikely that you’ve used the air conditioning during winter, so check it still blows cold. It might

also be worth having your pollen filter changed – a blocked filter puts extra strain on the electrical system.

Tyres Check your pressures regularly, especially before setting off on a long journey.

Remember these are your contact patch for the road. The minimum legal tread depth requirement is 1.6mm, but you should look at changing for new when you get to 3mm.

Lights We use our lights less during the summer months, so it’s easy to miss a blown bulb.

The last thing you want is to be caught out in the dark with no lights. Take some spare bulbs and do a quick check regularly.

It’s worth considering that if you’re going on holiday in your car, save yourself any dramas and get it serviced by your local garage before you head off.

Dog Chipping

S

ince April, 6 it has been a legal requirement for every dog owner in England to have their pet microchipped and the details of their animal registered on an authorised database. Owners have to comply with the new legislation or risk facing a penalty of up to £500.

The microchips will be coded with owners’ details and the police and local authorities will be issued with microchip reader scanners. Owners of dogs found not to be microchipped being served with a notice requiring them to have the dog chipped.

Pet owners will have 21 days to get their dog chipped after which time a £500 fine for failing to comply will be issued. The process of

microchipping and registering to an approved database must be completed by the time the dog reaches 8 weeks of age.

Government figures reveal that more than 100,000 dogs are dumped or lost each year, costing £57m to the taxpayer and welfare charities and it is hoped the change will reduce the number of lost pets and ease the burden on animal charities and local authorities.

National BBQ Week

etween May 30 and June 5 it’s National BBQ Week, so there’s never been a better time to grab the grill and enjoy the Great British summer al fresco style!

Now in its 20th year, organisers of the week hope to encourage us all to celebrate the warmer, drier days (let’s hope they are!) and lighter evenings with great food and drink. While most people stick to chicken, burgers and sausages, this is the time to be experimental…

Seafood is great on the barbie wrapped in foils and covered with herbs and lemon juice to make them extra delicious. If you do stick with the usual meats you can always marinate them.

Of course vegetarians are not excluded from the summer foodie fun with tasty baked potatoes to gorgeous vegetable kebabs. Summer food is all about fresh flavours.

Don’t forget the dessert options too…

You can’t go wrong with barbecued pineapple or bananas with a huge dollop of ice cream!

Once the food is sorted remember there’s a perfect drink to complement every dish: a taste of Spanish holidays with a jug of sangria or traditional English Pimms and some nonalcoholic tropical drinks should do the trick.

All you need now is to plan a get-together, grab some friends and finally the most important aspect - the sun (in Britain of course this cannot be guaranteed but a barbecue is always guaranteed fun!).

Barbecues are a great way to spend your summer leisure time but they have their own set of risks It’s all too easy to be distracted but some common sense preparation can ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience. To avoid injuries or damage to property, follow these simple precautions:

General Safety: • Make sure your barbecue is in good working order • Ensure the barbecue is on a flat surface, well away from a shed, trees or shrubs • Keep children, garden games and pets well away from the cooking area • Never leave the barbecue unattended • Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby for emergencies • Ensure the barbecue is cool before attempting to move it

Charcoal Barbecues: • Use only enough charcoal to cover the base to a depth of about 50mm (2 inches) • Only use recognised fire lighters or starter fuel and only on cold coals – use the minimum necessary and never use petrol • Never put hot ashes straight into a dustbin or wheelie bin – they could melt the plastic and cause a fire • To safely extinguish the charcoal you must prevent oxygen from reaching it. Close the lid of the grill or smoker, as well as any vents or draft doors.

Gas Barbecues: • Make sure the tap is turned off before changing the gas cylinder • Change cylinders outdoors if possible or in a well ventilated area • If you suspect a leak to the cylinder or pipe work, brush soapy water around the joints and watch for bubbles – tighten to fix but do not overtighten • After cooking, turn off the gas cylinder before turning off at the controls to ensure any residual gas in the pipe work is used up

Preparation time:10 minutes + marinating Cooking time: 25 minutes Total time: 35 minutes + marinating Serves: 4 Ingredients ½ x 568ml bottle Stella Artois Cidre 4 tbsp maple syrup 4 cloves garlic, halved 8 sprigs thyme 420g essential Waitrose British Pork Fillet, cubed 2 courgettes, thickly sliced 8 shallots, halved 1 red pepper, seeded and thickly sliced Olive oil spray

Method 1. Place the cider in a large glass bowl and stir in 2 tbsp of the maple syrup, the garlic cloves and half the thyme sprigs.

Add the pork and leave to soak for at least an hour or overnight.

Barbecue, grill or griddle the skewers for 15–20 minutes, turning regularly until cooked through.

Strip the leaves from the remaining thyme sprigs and stir into the remaining maple syrup. Brush onto the skewers and continue to cook for a further 5 minutes until shiny and nicely browned.

Serve with leafy salad and a chilled glass of the remaining cider.

Lift out the pork, discarding the marinade. Thread the meat and vegetables alternately onto 8 skewers.

Spray lightly with the oil.

If you’re using wooden skewers, ensure you soak them in water for 30 minutes before using so they don’t burn on the grill.

o know if they are friendly or not you need to keep an eye them. There are certain changes to the areas that need to be watched and if any of these happen you should contact your GP or skin cancer specialist straight away and explain what you have noticed.

Things to look out for:

• If they get lumpier across the surface or change in size • If the border of the area changes in shape • If they itch or bleed

• If they change in colour – particularly turning patchy

2. Slop on the sun cream (remember areas such as ears and neck)

Viewing a property can be a very daunting prospect! Picture it; you’re in someone else’s house, with a total stranger whose job it is to convince you to buy probably one of the most expensive things you’ll ever own.

aking a decision about a property is not something to take lightly, don’t let your manners get the better of you – ask questions about your potential dream home!

Here is our guide to the 10 questions you should be asking your estate agent: 1. Why are they selling?

It might sound simple but can be forgotten! The seller may be moving because there’s something wrong with the property, for example, noisy neighbours.

Listen for clues about whether their reason for moving might have a positive effect on any offer you may make.

A homeowner wanting a quick sale to move abroad may accept a lower offer than one moving to the other side of town!

2. How long has the property been marketed and how many viewings have there been?

If it’s only just come onto the market and there have been lots of viewings, this could signal a problem when it comes to negotiating a discount on the price – the more people looking the more likely a bidding war will ensue! If it’s been a while, ask the agent’s opinion about the possible reasons why.

Is the asking price too high or could there be other reasons why it hasn’t sold?

When was the boiler installed? When was the last time it was serviced and is there a warranty?

St Catherine’s Hospice New Horizon’s Garden and Produce Fair

On Sunday May, 8 the Worrall family are kindly opening their seven-acre garden, Birchanger Gardens in Handcross to the public in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice.

With displays of azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias and magnolias and a grassy avenue, lake, lily pond, pergola, Etruscan-style temple there will be much to see.

Open 2.00pm – 5.30pm with entrance £5 and children free. Dogs must be on leads. Free car parking and refreshments will be available.

Returning for 2016, St Catherine’s New Horizon’s Appeal Garden and Local Produce Fair is to take place in the grounds of Cuckfield Park on Thursday May, 19.

The prestigious fair has become known as West Sussex’s mini ‘Chelsea’, bringing together wide-ranging traders, specialist plants, garden products and local food.

Last year’s fair attracted more than 800 visitors browsing stalls. Since 1989, the appeal has raised more than £2.5 million for St Catherine’s.

Open 10.30am – 3.30pm, entrance £4, or £12.50 for stall preview ahead of public entrance from 8.30am.

The Garth

There will be another opportunity this year to visit the garden of the Garth in Newchapel Road, Lingfield, which will be opening under the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) on Saturday May 7 and Sunday May 8 2016.

Every year under the NGS, more than 3,700 privately-owned gardens across England and Wales are opened to welcome around 750,000 visitors. The NGS was founded in 1927 to raise money for nurses by opening gardens of interest to the public.

Now, the money raised from opening these gardens supports seven charities: Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Help the Hospices, Carers Trust, the Queen’s Nursing Institute, Perennial and the National Trust.

On average more than £2.5 million is raised each year. In 2014 the Garth raised £2,052 for the NGS from entrance tickets.

The Garth dates back to 1729 when Lingfield parish drew up a contract with a local carpenter, Thomas Stanford, to build a new workhouse later divided into cottages.

It was then purchased in 1918 by Stanley Hazell, who employed Godfrey to convert it into a single house and design the garden.

The garden has been altered and simplified in the later 20th century; however, it retains many key features of his design.

David and Lana, the owners will be opening the gardens for The NGS on May 7th and 8th from 2.00 to 5.30 both days, admission £5 with children free.

Give Them a Life Skill

You may have given them the gift of life, but what about giving your children an important life skill?

I

n a recent survey*, 49% of parents said that they felt “overwhelmed” by the sheer responsibility of this, and even more than half of those questions also said that they felt there just weren't enough hours in the day to give their children the grounding or life skills they need. Sound familiar?

Don’t panic, here are just a few life skill suggestions, which you can easily slip into your busy days!

Reading It goes without saying that reading is important - each day we need to read to take in a variety of information, be it from medicine bottles, road signs, application forms, the list goes on; all to be able to carry out simple everyday tasks. By starting to read to our children (and continuing to do so!) from an early age improves their understanding of language and vocabulary, making reading second nature. It can also open discussions to feelings and thoughts too. Many reading charities suggest reading out loud to our children, even when they can read for themselves, to improve their skills and motivate them to learn more words, which may be above their current reading ability.

Schedule in reading time once a day, to pass on this life skill to your child - even just fifteen minutes before bed could make a big difference!
