Sandra Corcoran

By Shelley Baker In our latest Community Hero article, we’re featuring the fantastic achievements of Sandra Corcoran who has been nominated for her services to local Brownie groups.

S

andra is believed to have been one of the youngest Brown Owls in history (she became a Brown Owl at just 18) and now, in her sixties, she is still head of the roost, encouraging young girls in Crawley to be adventurous and helpful!

The Community Hero, who lives in Furnace Green and is Brown Owl for the 2nd Furnace Green St Andrew’s Brownies, joined the Brownies in 1960, aged seven and 56 years later, has never left!

At 12 she joined the Guides and had her first taste of becoming a Pack Leader, when visiting a local Brownie group.

By 18, Sandra became one of the youngest Brown Owls in Surrey history. She’s since settled in Sussex, where she became Snowy Owl and now a Brown Owl.

Her style is structured but always fun and her Brownies love her. The imagination Sandra stirs in her girls is remarkable 6

One of the many reasons Sandra was nominated, was for her sheer enthusiasm to excite and educate young girls.

“Sandra has worked tirelessly, enthusiastically and largely without recognition since her teens, running Brownie packs and offering young girls unusual opportunities,” Anne Blackburn, who nominated our latest Community Hero says. “If the truth be known, Sandra gets as much joy from her Brownies as they do from attending.

Parents have no idea how much she puts into making their daughters’ Brownie experiences meaningful and informative.”

The Brown Owl – a PA in her working life – plans exciting speakers and trips, full of inspiring opportunities for her pack consisting of summer holiday camp trips, visits from the mayor and the fire service, a trip aboard a flight simulator… the list goes on!

Sandra is a reliable and much loved Brown Owl. She always has a waiting list for places in her smartly run pack, and she makes sure that her girls have a wide variety of opportunities to experience new things from

beekeeping to a flight simulator ride, Anne continues “her Brownies are a real credit to her.

She sets high standards for herself and expects the same from her girls. On several occasions during panto trips, I have witnessed complete strangers commending her pack members on their exemplary behaviour in public, something she shares with them with real pride.”

A snapshot of Crawley’s past

Crawley is well-known for being a one of eight “New Towns” dotted around London which was developed to accommodate the over-flow from an over-crowed capital post-war. Yet its place in history pre-dates as far back as the Stone Age.

M

ay is Local and Community History Month.

Its aim is to increase awareness and promote local history in the community so what better time to discover the past on our doorsteps?

To find out why knowing more about our local history is so important, we asked Helen Poole, museum officer at Crawley Museum to share her thoughts.

“Knowing about our local history is very important in giving people a sense of pride in their locality. We did an extensive public consultation and the overwhelming view was that people were proud to live in Crawley and wanted others to share their enthusiasm” Helen explained.

Keen to emphasise that Crawley isn’t simply a New Town created in the postwar reconstruction of the

1940s and 1950s, Helen says that Crawley’s history can be dated back to the Stone Age and saw several key stages of development including rail travel and the building of Gatwick Airport.

“It is important to let people know that Crawley didn’t just materialise after the war, but that this New Town was the third phase, in a continuous line stretching back. The coming of the railways had led to the expansion of the town with

the influx of people who could commute up to London.’

“Happily all three phases of Crawley’s existence are part of the fabric of The Tree (Crawley Museum’s new home, opening later this year!), which is perfectly placed to illustrate the growth of Crawley from a small village to the bustling New Town we see today” Helen says.

Worth Park Wanders

Love walking and enjoy nature? Why not join a FREE organised “Worth Park Wander”, a fun monthly walk for all ages and abilities, each time with a difference.

W

orth Park Wander’s offer you the opportunity to learn about different aspects of Worth Park’s beauty and heritage – from nature and wildlife, through to the history of the fascinating Montefiore’s family who once resided there.

This month, as part of the walk, you can even try your hand at croquet on the lawns.

We caught up with Edwina Livesey, the park’s Participation Officer, to uncover more:

now but we felt we’d like to organise walks at a slightly slower pace that allowed people to learn new things about wildlife and heritage as well.

What are the aims of the walks?

We all love getting out in the fresh air but often nowadays we may not feel we do it enough.

These walks offer a chance to do that whilst meeting new people and learning new things.

Fortunately, we have some lovely friendly knowledgeable volunteers who are now trained to lead the walks. Our first walk was in February this year and was really successful.

People think of Crawley as a new town but it’s incredibly green with lovely parks and gardens and has a fascinating history as well.

be a brief introduction to the topic of the walk. Then off we’ll go! The walks last for about an hour with various stops on the way to learn more about the things we see, and there is also lots of time for chatting and getting to know people and talking to our volunteers.

Afterwards, Sam our Head Gardener puts the kettle on and we all have well-earned coffee and biscuits at our visitor centre in Ridleys Court.

Can anyone join or do you need to be able to walk a certain distance?

The walks are open to everyone, whatever their level of fitness. If you feel an hour is a little too long for you at this stage, just mention this to our volunteers and you will be

helped to do a shorter walk before a nice sit down back at the centre.

May’s event includes croquet - can you tell us more about this?

The theme for the May walk is croquet so this will be a little different to our other walks.

Instead of going back to Ridleys Court afterwards, drinks will be served on our croquet lawns where you may try your hand at this fun game.

It’s one of those pastimes which anyone can join in with regardless of their level of fitness - and it may look very gentle but it’s surprisingly

competitive! All equipment will be provided.

Calling all art lovers!

On 28th - 29th May, local art-enthusiasts are invited to enjoy an impressive two day exhibition at The Glebe Centre, in Crawley Down.

T

he exhibition is the first of its kind to be held at the community centre, which opened three years ago and will showcase just how talented the village’s residents are.

“The aim is to celebrate art in Crawley Down by exhibiting sculptures, paintings and applique, created by artists living in the village, plus art by children of Crawley Down Village School,” the organiser, Reverend Jon Hale, vicar of All Saints Church explains.

The free amateur art event will see stunning work from locals, including renowned mouth painter Jacky Archer and outstanding sculptor Lorraine Kelly who uses materials from the forest floor in her creations.

Six specially-made frames, totalling 33 square metres of space, will display the finest works from artists, sculptors, and school students, during the weekend.

Some pieces will be available to buy too – so if you fancy an original for your home produced by a local artist, don’t forget your wallet or purse!

“Some works in the exhibition will be for sale with 80% of the sale being received by the artist,” Reverend Hale

says. “The 20% commission taken by The Glebe Centre will cover the cost of expenses and use of the building.”

Not only does the exhibition bring together art lovers, but also highlights the importance of creativity too. “Art in school is essential to give children a sense of self-worth: it introduces them to colour, form, design and pattern; this lets children engage directly with their world and it stimulates a sense of wonder,” the vicar continues.

“A child’s painting is something to cherish and to be proud of. At the same time, more adults than ever

before are buying and enjoying colouring books - many people paint and draw. Lots of people mess about with stuff to make things that are fun, decorative and sometimes practical.

Imaginative and well executed works of art are a delight and source of inspiration in the home. And on the last weekend in May, in The Glebe Centre, these will have been produced by people in Crawley Down.”

12 Marathons in 12 Months

When many of us think about celebrating a ‘special’ birthday, most of us would hope for a relaxing break, lots of cake and perhaps a glass or two of fizz.

Not Crawley resident Mark Barrett. He has decided to celebrate his milestone 40th birthday by running 12 marathons in just 12 months!

M

ark, who lives in Maidenbower and is a personal trainer, turns 40 on May 20 and plans to mark the occasion by pushing himself to the limit; taking on gruelling marathons across the world, all for local charity Home-Start CHAMS. The Crawley-based charity aims to offer support and help to families across Crawley, Horsham and Mid-Sussex.

“I wanted a different and special challenge to mark my 40th year,” Mark told us.

“I wanted something that required a big commitment and something that would not only challenge me but also raise awareness and money for a very deserving local charity.”

“I have run marathons before and also completed triathlons but I really wanted a big challenge to keep me going throughout the year not just a one off - something to really mark the occasion and do something for a worthy local cause at the same time.

Doing something throughout the year will hopefully push me to my limits and make a big positive contribution for Home-Start CHAMS.” Mark has already run three marathons, over the last few months; Barcelona, Brighton and London and has nine to go between now and the middle of November – including the

Reykjavik, Amsterdam and Athens marathons. He’s hoping to raise £4,000 for the charity.

As a personal trainer and an experienced runner, Mark is clearly fit enough to take on such a challenge, however, as he explains, there’s a lot of on-going training to do, and he’s even started a running group, so inspired residents can join him:

“Being a personal trainer; I have a high level of fitness and run regular classes and boot camps at MBT Fitness, but to step this up to the level it needs to be at I have started training three to four times during the week plus a long distance run on weekends.”

“To further support my running I have created a

running club; Black Dog Runners, in association with MBT Fitness. Anyone wanting to join me in any of my events throughout 2016, or to kickstart their running is welcome to get in touch, we welcome anyone of any ability.”

When asked what he’s looking forward to most, Mark told us that he was looking

forward to pushing himself and helping Home-Start CHAMS: “I am most looking forward to challenging myself while making a real impact and difference to a charity which really make positive impacts to vulnerable young children within the local community.”

Like to think you’ve still got the moves? Love having a boogie?

Whether you’re an experienced mover or more a freestyle groover Pound Hill resident, Jayne Archer wants you to join her for a 12-hour dance challenge, for a cause close to her heart.

R

egular readers will know that we are closely following Jayne’s personal quest to raise £50,000 for charity Bloodwise (previously known as Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research). Not only a staggering target but one which she aims to reach by the time she turns fifty – in just three years’ time!

Bloodwise hopes to beat the 137 types of blood cancer – something Jayne feels very passionately about, as she sadly lost her husband Mark Henry Archer, suddenly to a rare

blood cancer in 2010. So far she has raised more than £16,000 but still has a long way to go.

Her 12-hour danceathon, taking place in Tesco Gatwick Extra’s Community Room, from 9.00am on Saturday, June 4, is the latest novel fundraiser planned and she’d love dancers of all abilities to get involved!

“I do a personal challenge every year,” Jayne says. “Last year despite having a fear of heights I, along with 22 others, climbed the O2 raising £5,002.

Relief, I was bitten. I knew 24-hours without the support network of the BBC would be a step too far, but 12 hours feels more achievable. I love dancing, and music is a huge part of my life as it was Mark’s. 12 hours will be a huge challenge.”

“During the day I would love dance classes, clubs, theatre and keep fit lovelies to come along and take over for a stint.

I will still be dancing, but it will give me and the public some variety. While it’s just me and my supporters we will alternate between disco, line dancing and salsa.”

“I am looking forward to hearing all the great songs I love over the day, this will hopefullykeep me going,” she laughs.

“Sharing this adventure with my dear friends and the thought of dancing the last hour with everyone at the party will be a great memory to hold - hopefully raising lots of much needed awareness of the Mark Henry Archer Tribute Fund at Bloodwise.”

EU Referendum

I

n May 2015, I was honoured to be re-elected as Crawley’s Member of Parliament.

A key manifesto pledge that I campaigned on has now been delivered – a referendum on the UK’s membership of the EU, which will take place on Thursday, June 23. I will be voting to leave because I believe it is time to restore British freedoms, self-determination and our global outlook.

I have been pleased to work alongside other local MPs to press the Government on the issue of school funding. West Sussex currently is one of the lowest funded areas under a more than decade-old unfair formula.

A new, national funding system will be introduced and I am pleased that the majority Conservative government are keeping this election commitment – work continues on this matter as the public consultation comes to a close.

Work also progresses on ensuring there are more than three million new apprentices across the UK by 2020. Earlier this year I was pleased to host the Crawley Apprenticeship & Jobs Fair to help local students be a part of this.

From April 2017, the tax-free Personal Allowance will increase to £11,500 – a tax cut for 31 million people across our country, meaning that a typical basic rate taxpayer will be paying over £1,000 less in income tax compared to 2010.

Mantra Magazines, originally named RH10 Uncovered, started life in May 2006 on a dining room table, before a spare room, then a garden shed, which eventually was out-grown too.

They expanded from just one title covering the RH10 postcode to now six titles and the company has worked out of offices in Rowfant since 2010.

Community and family are core values at the heart of the business. In the early days, it was staffed exclusively by family members; alongside Nikki and Matthew were Nikki’s niece Nadine and Matthew’s brother David. Nikki’s late aunt Theresa even came trans-Atlantic from Vancouver to help sell the vision of the magazine to local businesses for six months!

Making Memories: Nikki and Matthew laugh as they recall the time Matthew was ‘rescued’ whilst taking a photo for the launch issue’s front cover. He was lying on his back in a flower bed at Snowhill Garden Centre, trying to get the perfect shot of some blossom when an elderly couple thought he had collapsed! Nikki chuckles as she recalls “They rushed to his aid but in fact he was simply trying to find an angle of the blossom so as to get the sky in the background. Certainly a memorable moment for me.

Still makes me laugh ten years-on!”

The number of staff has since grown from just two in 2006 to 12 in 2016. In addition, there are a further eight community writers.

With summer hopefully around the corner, there are a few basic checks that can be done to help keep you on the road.

Coolant Believe it or not, the same stuff that prevents your engine from freezing during the long winter nights also helps stop it overheating during long summer days.The biggest reason for summer breakdowns is overheated vehicles. So check your coolant level weekly, also get your local garage to test the strength of the coolant mix if your car hasn’t been serviced recently. Check the condition of the auxiliary drive belt (also known as the fan belt), too. If your car does overheat, wait at least an hour for the engine to cool down before attempting to remove the radiator/ coolant tank cap.

etween May 30 and June 5 it’s National BBQ Week, so there’s never been a better time to grab the grill and enjoy the Great British summer al fresco style!

Now in its 20th year, organisers of the week hope to encourage us all to celebrate the warmer, drier days (let’s hope they are!) and lighter evenings with great food and drink. While most people stick to chicken, burgers and sausages, this is the time to be experimental…

Seafood is great on the barbie wrapped in foils and covered with herbs and lemon juice to make them extra delicious. If you do stick with the usual meats you can always marinate them.

Of course vegetarians are not excluded from the summer foodie fun with tasty baked potatoes to gorgeous vegetable kebabs. Summer food is all about fresh flavours.

Don’t forget the dessert options too…

You can’t go wrong with barbecued pineapple or bananas with a huge dollop of ice cream!

Once the food is sorted remember there’s a perfect drink to complement every dish: a taste of Spanish holidays with a jug of sangria or traditional English Pimms and some nonalcoholic tropical drinks should do the trick.

All you need now is to plan a get-together, grab some friends and finally the most important aspect - the sun (in Britain of course this cannot be guaranteed but a barbecue is always guaranteed fun!).

Barbecues are a great way to spend your summer leisure time but they have their own set of risks It’s all too easy to be distracted but some common sense preparation can ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience. To avoid injuries or damage to property, follow these simple precautions:

General Safety: • Make sure your barbecue is in good working order • Ensure the barbecue is on a flat surface, well away from a shed, trees or shrubs • Keep children, garden games and pets well away from the cooking area • Never leave the barbecue unattended • Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby for emergencies • Ensure the barbecue is cool before attempting to move it

Charcoal Barbecues: • Use only enough charcoal to cover the base to a depth of about 50mm (2 inches) • Only use recognised fire lighters or starter fuel and only on cold coals – use the minimum necessary and never use petrol • Never put hot ashes straight into a dustbin or wheelie bin – they could melt the plastic and cause a fire • To safely extinguish the charcoal you must prevent oxygen from reaching it. Close the lid of the grill or smoker, as well as any vents or draft doors.

Gas Barbecues: • Make sure the tap is turned off before changing the gas cylinder • Change cylinders outdoors if possible or in a well ventilated area • If you suspect a leak to the cylinder or pipe work, brush soapy water around the joints and watch for bubbles – tighten to fix but do not overtighten • After cooking, turn off the gas cylinder before turning off at the controls to ensure any residual gas in the pipe work is used up

Preparation time:10 minutes + marinating Cooking time: 25 minutes Total time: 35 minutes + marinating Serves: 4 Ingredients ½ x 568ml bottle Stella Artois Cidre 4 tbsp maple syrup 4 cloves garlic, halved 8 sprigs thyme 420g essential Waitrose British Pork Fillet, cubed 2 courgettes, thickly sliced 8 shallots, halved 1 red pepper, seeded and thickly sliced Olive oil spray

Method 1. Place the cider in a large glass bowl and stir in 2 tbsp of the maple syrup, the garlic cloves and half the thyme sprigs.

Add the pork and leave to soak for at least an hour or overnight.

Barbecue, grill or griddle the skewers for 15–20 minutes, turning regularly until cooked through.

Strip the leaves from the remaining thyme sprigs and stir into the remaining maple syrup. Brush onto the skewers and continue to cook for a further 5 minutes until shiny and nicely browned.

Serve with leafy salad and a chilled glass of the remaining cider.

Lift out the pork, discarding the marinade. Thread the meat and vegetables alternately onto 8 skewers.

Spray lightly with the oil.

Viewing a property can be a very daunting prospect! Picture it; you’re in someone else’s house, with a total stranger whose job it is to convince you to buy probably one of the most expensive things you’ll ever own.

aking a decision about a property is not something to take lightly, don’t let your manners get the better of you – ask questions about your potential dream home!

Here is our guide to the 10 questions you should be asking your estate agent: 1. Why are they selling?

It might sound simple but can be forgotten! The seller may be moving because there’s something wrong with the property, for example, noisy neighbours.

Listen for clues about whether their reason for moving might have a positive effect on any offer you may make.

A homeowner wanting a quick sale to move abroad may accept a lower offer than one moving to the other side of town!

2. How long has the property been marketed and how many viewings have there been?

If it’s only just come onto the market and there have been lots of viewings, this could signal a problem when it comes to negotiating a discount on the price – the more people looking the more likely a bidding war will ensue! If it’s been a while, ask the agent’s opinion about the possible reasons why.

Is the asking price too high or could there be other reasons why it hasn’t sold?

St Catherine’s Hospice New Horizon’s Garden and Produce Fair

On Sunday May, 8 the Worrall family are kindly opening their seven-acre garden, Birchanger Gardens in Handcross to the public in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice.

With displays of azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias and magnolias and a grassy avenue, lake, lily pond, pergola, Etruscan-style temple there will be much to see.

Open 2.00pm – 5.30pm with entrance £5 and children free. Dogs must be on leads. Free car parking and refreshments will be available.

Returning for 2016, St Catherine’s New Horizon’s Appeal Garden and Local Produce Fair is to take place in the grounds of Cuckfield Park on Thursday May, 19.

The prestigious fair has become known as West Sussex’s mini ‘Chelsea’, bringing together wide-ranging traders, specialist plants, garden products and local food.

Last year’s fair attracted more than 800 visitors browsing stalls. Since 1989, the appeal has raised more than £2.5 million for St Catherine’s.

Open 10.30am – 3.30pm, entrance £4, or £12.50 for stall preview ahead of public entrance from 8.30am.

Give Them a Life Skill

You may have given them the gift of life, but what about giving your children an important life skill?

I

n a recent survey*, 49% of parents said that they felt “overwhelmed” by the sheer responsibility of this, and even more than half of those questions also said that they felt there just weren't enough hours in the day to give their children the grounding or life skills they need. Sound familiar?

Don’t panic, here are just a few life skill suggestions, which you can easily slip into your busy days!

Reading It goes without saying that reading is important - each day we need to read to take in a variety of information, be it from medicine bottles, road signs, application forms, the list goes on; all to be able to carry out simple everyday tasks. By starting to read to our children (and continuing to do so!) from an early age improves their understanding of language and vocabulary, making reading second nature. It can also open discussions to feelings and thoughts too. Many reading charities suggest reading out loud to our children, even when they can read for themselves, to improve their skills and motivate them to learn more words, which may be above their current reading ability.

Schedule in reading time once a day, to pass on this life skill to your child - even just fifteen minutes before bed could make a big difference!

Dog Chipping

ince April, 6 it has been a legal requirement for every dog owner in England to have their pet microchipped and the details of their animal registered on an authorised database. Owners have to comply with the new legislation or risk facing a penalty of up to £500.

The microchips will be coded with owners’ details and the police and local authorities will be issued with microchip reader scanners.

Owners of dogs found not to be microchipped being served with a notice requiring them to have the dog chipped.

Pet owners will have 21 days to get their dog chipped after which time a £500 fine for failing to comply will be issued. The process of microchipping and registering to an approved database must be completed by the time the dog reaches 8 weeks of age.

Government figures reveal that more than 100,000 dogs are dumped or lost each year, costing £57m to the taxpayer and welfare charities and it is hoped the change will reduce the number of lost pets and ease the burden on animal charities and local authorities.

By Jacob White ay is National Walking Month and campaigners hope to use the month to promote the benefits of everyday walking and to get everyone on the move, no matter what your level of fitness.

Walking is simple and free as well as being one of the easiest ways to be more active, lose weight and lead a healthier lifestyle. Unfortunately the benefits of walking as a form of exercise are often overlooked.

The advantages of walking range from helping improve your physical and mental wellbeing and by building walking into your day you can also save money and help the environment.

Charity Living Streets is encouraging us all to make simple changes to our days such as walking all or part of our commute, planning a walking meeting or going for a lunchtime walk.

Walking for just 20 minutes a day can transform fitness levels, improve health and reduce stress and anxiety.

Taking a brisk walk can burn up to 110 calories – an easy way to burn calories.

With many of us rushing from the commute to the office, and then eating lunch at our desks before heading home for a night in front of the television, we are unwittingly risking our health.

Evidence shows that physical activity can also be effective in boosting mood. In addition, it is a great way to clear your head at the beginning or end of a stressful day.

4Sight Ramblers (Mid Sussex South) Celebrate their 5th Birthday Next month is the fifth birthday of 4Sight Ramblers (Mid Sussex South), a 30-strong member group of walkers who are blind, partially sighted or volunteers.

Leaders Anne Tomlinson and Jane Aston came together when they recognised blind and partially sighted people had difficulties getting out in the countryside.

The group meets on the first Monday of the month at a chosen venue and walks for
