Crawley’s Community Festival returns

K

nown as a festival organised for the community, by the community, we’re thrilled to see Crawley Festival return this month!

For two weeks, the town will host an array of amazing events bringing together residents, local groups and organisations.

The first event, High Street Live will take place on Sunday, June 12 and sees two stages at opposite ends of the High Street, with performances from local bands and musicians between 2.00pm and 9.30pm. The High Street will be closed from traffic, allowing tables from bars and restaurants to spill outside and customers to enjoy the music!

“With no traffic, the cobbled High Street becomes a great place to sit and enjoy some free entertainment and some great food,” organiser Tony Witton, who lives in Crawley, explains.

On Saturday, June 18, Crawley Festival’s Mainstage event will take over the town! Based in the Memorial Gardens, between 12.00pm and 5.00pm, workshops including art, singing and DJ skills will be in action, along with bands, singers and dancers from all over Crawley performing routines. Food stalls, craft beer, ice creams, bouncy castles and street theatre will be keeping residents refreshed and in the festival spirit!

“We also have the Cultural Kitchen where local people cook traditional dishes to celebrate their heritage,” Tony tells us. “They demonstrate the recipes and then people get to taste the food.

Crawley Festival’s Mainstage has been running since 2006 and High Street Live for the last six years and aims to showcase Crawley’s talent.

“I got involved because I wanted to do something to make the town a more interesting place to live; to give people an opportunity to learn new skills by taking part in some creative activity; as well as enable talented performers to show people what they can do and develop their stage skills,” Tony, who works hard to organise these annual events says.

“I hope it makes people a little bit proud of living in Crawley to see what local people can do when they work together! Come along and enjoy the summer by celebrating Crawley’s wealth of talent!”

Supporting Youth Community Football: Maidenbower Football Tournament On June 18 and 19, keen footballers are invited to take part in an exciting two day tournament in Maidenbower Park!

The third annual sporting event has been organised by Crawley Panthers Football Club and Maidenbower United Football Club to develop children’s football within Crawley.

“The first aim of the tournament is to provide a safe environment where young players of both sexes can get together and enjoy a day doing what they love - playing football!” Andy Roscoe, dad of two and manager for Crawley Panthers’ under 11’s says.

“The second aim is to raise money for both clubs to enable us to continue to create the

1,400 boys aged from the under 7’s to 18 and for the first time; over 300 girls aged under 9 to 16, get stuck into playing the beautiful game. right environment for learning and development and also to support young children in building confidence and developing social skills. All money raised ensures both clubs can continue to support children interested in football from the Crawley area.”

This year’s two day tournament (running from 9.30am - 5.30pm on both days), will see up to 1,400 boys aged from the under 7’s to 18 and for the first time; over 300 girls aged under 9 to 16, get stuck into playing the beautiful game.

Copthorne Carnival is back!

ancel your plans for Saturday, June 25 – Copthorne Carnival is back and promises to be bigger and better than ever! We chatted with the chair of the carnival committee Graham Casella to find out all you need to know about this year’s community fun day...

Now in its 52nd year, the hardworking carnival committee have been working tirelessly for the last 12 months to make this event - the biggest and best yet, with more and more community groups, performers and fun events planned throughout the day.

Kicking-off with an exciting procession of vehicle and walking floats from Knowle Drive at 1.30pm, the event arrives, well and truly with a bang, on the Village Green at 2.00pm, for the start of the festivities – which saw more than 1,500 people join in last year!

So, what can we expect to see on Copthorne Village Green this year?

“We’ve four live bands, a bar, a barbecue and 46 stalls providing lots of different items of enjoyment for everyone,” the carnival’s chair explains. “We have an arena packed with live entertainment, all afternoon – including a bird of prey display. Why not come and enjoy yourself?!”

The fun-filled day’s finale will be a spectacular fireworks show, ending the event on a high.

This year’s theme is Tales of the Seven Seas, so start creating your fancy dress outfits and fantastic floats and get involved with this truly feel-good community event.

“The Copthorne Carnival is a great day of entertainment, starting from 1.30pm with the procession through to fireworks at 10.20pm.

It is non- stop fun!”

“The aim of the event is to enable village organisations to raise funds, but has become the big annual, social get-together for Copthorne,” according to Graham, who has been part of the community event for more than 20 years, says.

Raising funds for kids in Crawley Down

I

n the last year, Crawley Down School’s fundraising parents have raised more than £10,000 – to benefit the lives of the school’s students! I spoke with chairperson Mel Martinez to talk Parents’ Association power, fun fundraising and to find out how the amazing total has been spent...

Since 2008, Crawley Down Village School Parents’ Association (also known as The Fundraising Team), have been working hard to raise money for the school to give treats to pupils that government budgets just don’t stretch to.

Events such as summer and Christmas fairs, ‘secret’ shopping and school discos have helped the team to raise almost £10,300, with all money going back into the school and improving the learning and enjoyment for all children.

These ‘treats’ have included £1,000 worth of new digital cameras for each of the eleven classes, £2,500 worth of new books for the school library and new toys for both playgrounds to entertain the children during break time.

Most recently the fundraisers have also paid for the refurbishment of the outdoor play area for reception-aged children, the installation of the popular climbing wall and new sports kits for the school’s various sports teams.

As many busy working parents will know, though, having spare time to help out at school, can be difficult. So how, and why does Mel who is mum to Sophia, aged 10 and 7-year-old Sienna and her team do it?

“I have always helped out but three years ago, I felt I wanted to do more so went to a meeting and ended up becoming chairperson - which I have grown to love! We have an amazing team and work so well together, but I could not do the role without secretary Jane Summers and treasurer Karen Pearman. The three of us complement each other so well and it just works.” Mel told us.

“I also try and help in the school one day a week whilst my girls are little, as this precious time goes too quickly when they actually want you there!”

COMMUNITY A Girls’ Night Out

With A Difference!

For most of us, many a girls’ night out sees us tucked up in bed with a cuppa, before midnight. But this month, one local charity asks us to grab our girlfriends and take on a magical walk during the witching hour, all to raise funds (and have fun!) for their cause.

W

e caught up with Copthorne resident, Lisa Jarvis to hear why she’ll be shunning bedtime, in favour of taking a midnight stroll in memory of her mum…

“My mum was cared for by St Catherine’s Hospice and I’ll be taking part in the Midnight Walk as part of the team ‘Rita’s Ramblers’, aptly named after mum,” she says.

“I remember, at first, mum felt scared about going into the hospice, as I’m sure a lot of people do.

She was terrified of being alone and one of her biggest fears was she might die at night.

But at St Catherine’s no patient is ever alone; we were allowed to sleep right next to mum’s bed, holding her hand.

“When the nurses had settled all the patients and could quite easily have taken a well-earned rest themselves, they didn’t.

They were still there for me and my family.

They talked to us, reassured us, cuddled us if we needed it and above all, made us feel that we weren’t alone as we went through the most difficult time of our lives.

“One of the best things about the care St Catherine’s gave was being able to go back to being mum’s daughter, not her carer.

I was given the chance to say all the things I wanted to and spend quality time with her during those last few days without worrying,” Lisa continues.

“Taking part in the Midnight Walk is a fantastic way to give something back to the hospice for the amazing care they gave, not just Mum, but everyone they care for.

“On the night, there’s an incredible atmosphere and a strong sense of empowerment and collaboration. It’s great to see so many women coming together to raise money and help the hospice and it’s pretty special being a part of that!”

St Catherine’s Midnight Walk starts on July 2 in Horsham Park and walkers can choose between a 7, 13 or 20 mile route – so grab your trainers, the girls and get walking!

Five fab reasons to get involved this Volunteers Week

etween June 1 and June 12, it’s Volunteers Week 2016, volunteers and the amazing roles they play in our communities will be celebrated.

Why is volunteering so beneficial and why should you get involved? Here are five good reasons to give something back to your community: 1. Meet new people For both young and old alike, loneliness is an issue affecting thousands of us throughout the country. Volunteering presents the opportunity to meet and form friendships with other people, whom you may not have otherwise met. Whether a fellow volunteer or with those you meet in your new role.

Socialising with others can bring confidence and an injection of fun as well as new possibilities into your life!

2. Learn new skills and increase employability A recent survey of leading UK businesses found that 73% would employ someone who has volunteered over someone that hasn’t. This could be down to the diverse range of skills gained from volunteering – including; leadership and team building, communicating, problem-solving, adaptability, time management and so much more. So, if you’re looking to add more to your CV, volunteering could be a wonderful step!

3. Make a difference to the lives of others One of the main benefits and focuses of volunteering is the positive impact it has to other people. Regardless of whether you’re part of a charity fundraising team or if you’re directly involved in helping others, your actions will be improving the lives of other people!

4. It’s flexible Unlike work and other commitments we have, volunteering is completely flexible, and you shouldn’t be put off, worrying that you don’t have the time. Each of us can most likely spare a few hours

per month, be that in one go, or at varied times. Just explain your situation and availability and the role will work around you!

5. It makes you feel good!

Study after study has proven that volunteering makes people feel happier and better about themselves. It’s even suggested that volunteering can help you live longer, lower your stress levels and giving you life satisfaction. For all of us who have to-do lists as long as our arms, volunteering our time is thought to increase our perceptions of how much time we do have available – thus doing more in the process!

There are more than 100 different roles currently available in the Crawley area with Crawley Community and Voluntary Service.

ontinuing our look back to 10-years-ago and the launch of Mantra Magazines, do you remember the tech trends of 2006? Here is some of the techy news hitting the headlines way back then.

Notable releases of the year included Play Station 3 from Sony and the Nintendo Wii – both released in the month of November in the all-important run-up to Christmas and peak sale period.

The Japanese tech giant Nintendo was busy back in 2006, as well as the Wii they also released the Nintendo DS Lite – a slimmer, lighter version of their popular original Nintendo DS.

The First Tweet Ever Other tech news in 2006, Twitter, do you tweet?

In July, the first tweets were sent with the launch of the 140-character blogging service. Today, more than 400 million Tweets are sent every day.

In tech business news the popular search engine Google acquired what was then a newcomer to the video sharing market YouTube for around $1.65billion – just imagine its network today!

EU Referendum There are only a few weeks to go until the referendum on our membership of the European Union on Thursday 23rd June.

As readers may be aware I will be voting to leave.

Europe has changed enormously since the UK joined the then Common Market in 1973. There was a referendum in 1975 on whether we should stay in – which the UK voted to do because the agreement was then about free trade.

Over the past 43 years, the European Union, as it is now, has grown to take control over more and more areas which do not have anything to do with trade – such as our borders, our public services, and even demanding that prisoners should have the right to vote.

The EU currently has too much control over our economy. Only 5 per cent of businesses export to the EU, however, they are all caught by its red tape. By taking control, we can run our economy in the interests of millions of small businesses and entrepreneurs up and down Great Britain as well as taking a global view using our unique links.

Europe is the world’s only shrinking market.

Staging a show in the medieval grandeur of the Garden of England

What better than going-out and picking your own? The best of the fruit this month is cherries and berries...

Last year, scientists at the Oregon Health and Science University in the US claimed eating cherries helped athletes recover from exercise pain.

55 runners were found to experience less pain after training if they had drank cherry juice. Good to know! Cherries, should be picked when they are of maximum size, if they are picked before they are fully mature they will not ripen off the tree.

Cherries keep longer if the stems remain attached and can be stored in the refrigerator to be enjoyed for two to three days after.

Blueberries A true favourite of our American cousins, the fruit which is so often deliciously served in a muffin or with a pancake, is only ripe when easy to pick – if they show resistance, they simply aren’t ready. Another tell-tell sign if the blueberry isn’t ripe is a red ring around the top of the berry where the fruit is attached to the stem. After picking, cool blueberries as quickly as possible to around or 1.5°C or 35°F.

Blackberries Pick blackberries as they become soft - it is best to pick early in the day because the berries do not spoil as quickly as those picked in the afternoon. Not many people know that!

Blackberries that are picked at the proper time of day and season, handled carefully, and then stored in a cool place will stay in good condition for several days after.

Strawberries Often-ranked as Britain’s favourite fruit, the strawberry is synonymous with the month of June - a staggering 27,000 kilos of strawberries are eaten at the Wimbledon Championships alone, together with 7,000 litres of cream! It is best to pick strawberries in the morning when the berries are cool and the berry should be picked with the stem attached by grasping the stem between the thumb and forefinger and pinching it off of the main plant.

For best storage, keep strawberries at a temperature below 4.5°C or 40°F.

National Smile Month, organised by the independent charity Dental Health Foundation is a chance to take a refreshed look at our oral health, learn more about why a healthy smile is so important and share tips on how to improve and maintain a healthy smile which will make you feel and look good.

Dentists say there are three key principles to developing great oral health; brush your teeth at least twice a day, visit your dentist regularly and limit your intake of sugary foods and drinks - these are a very good starting point for a healthy smile.

Maintaining good oral health is a fairly simple task.

Failure to maintain good oral health over a long period of time can sometimes lead to unnecessary, invasive and expensive treatment. Poor oral health can lead to direct problems such as gum disease and tooth decay as well as indirect problems such as an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes.

The benefits of developing and maintaining a healthy smile are clear. By following some simple rules you can bring about some remarkably positive differences to many aspects of your life - from improved self-confidence to career and relationship success, a healthy smile can truly transform you!

We often have conversations in the office about how useful it would be for potential customers to have a point of reference, where they could have access to a database of tradesmen who have not carried out works to an acceptable level or have not perhaps worked with the customers best interests at heart.

A good builder will be able to advise you on this during your initial discussions, and may also offer you alternatives that you hadn’t thought of.

• Always obtain more than one quote – this is an obvious one but needless to say, having a point of comparison is crucial. This doesn’t mean you should always go with the cheapest option, it is a way of comparing the look and feel of the company too and how they operate behind the scenes.

• Request a site visit to a previous customer who has had similar work carried out. Ask if they would have done anything differently, or if there were any minor issues along the way.

This way, you can anticipate and avoid any niggles that may come along.

Plotting a vegetable garden

Even the smallest garden can find space to grow vegetables. Start now and you can enjoy delicious home-grown salads all summer long.

P

roducing useful quantities of your own vegetables doesn’t take up as much space as you might imagine. There’s a lot you can plant out or grow from seed right now that will give you some super-tasty, succulent, and top-quality salads in just a few weeks’ time.

Before you get sowing or planting, choose the right containers. Big ones are easier to maintain than small ones; and of course bigger pots mean more produce. Go for something of at least 30cm (12in) in diameter, larger if possible.

As salad crops tend to be pretty short-term there’s no need to spend a fortune on compost.

Ideally choose a good-quality multi-purpose compost but you can get perfectly acceptable results with the contents of a growing-bag.

I find the quality of the compost in these isn’t all that brilliant, but if it’s well-fertilised, it will be adequate.

If you grow your own salad leaves you can get precisely the mix you like best. There are plenty of eye-catching lettuces such as the frilly Lollo or the gorgeous burgundy-tinged Lollo Rosso. Treat them as cut-and-come-again crops, snipping off the leaves as you want them but not cutting into to the base, then they’ll put out new shoots and keep cropping for longer.

Baby beet leaves are a popular salad ingredient too. Choose a variety like Bull’s Blood for the prettiest leaves or grow any of the standard varieties, and you’ll also get a great-tasting root crop later on. I generally harvest the young leaves a few at a time but let the plant produce a root too.

When buying tomato plants, hunt carefully to find the ones that are still in top condition. Outdoor varieties can be grown in their own pot - if you have a big enough container you can grow some other salad ingredients around the edge of the container.

Fresh herbs can make a salad more interesting too. Choose your favourites and either grow them in a dedicated herb pot with extra grit in the compost for good drainage.

Vegetables, like most plants, do best in a relatively warm spot with plenty of sun but sheltered from wind, so site your containers carefully. You may prefer to raise some of your crops in pots and grow them on a bit before planting them out. The garden containers will always be full and looking their best, even while you’re harvesting them. The new plantings will very quickly blend in with the old, and all summer long you’ll have a garden that’s pleasing to the eye.

omeone once said that nothing in life is truly for free, and it’s said that when something seems too good to be true, it often is.

This is worth considering if you find yourself in the fortunate position of buying a brand new car and the keen salesman offers you three years fixed price, or better still – free servicing.

Sounds great - you’re driving out of the showroom in a brand new car, you’ve either paid a fixed amount for your vehicle’s servicing for the next three years, or not paid a penny for said maintenance. But consider this, you’re not getting the chance to shop around, so is that package on offer actually saving you money or is it more expensive than what you’d pay at your local garage?

If it is cheap or free, has the cost already been bundled into the price of the car anyway, giving no transparency over the true cost to you the buyer, or for you to look for better deals.

Also worth considering is that whilst servicing might be ‘free’ or pre-paid, chances are the small print will tell you that things like brakes, tyres and suspension won’t be - the dealership will need to make up the money somewhere.

It could be as simple as a ploy to get you to return to the dealership - they can wave sweet temptation under your nose for the next three years hoping you’ll again succumb to the desire to replace your car and thus start the cycle once more.

Car manufacturers have got to find ways of getting customers to keep coming back and since the warranty clause was scrapped in 2004, they can’t insist you take the car back to them to retain the warranty on your vehicle. You can instead take it to a good independent garage to have work done, usually at a fraction of the cost, without affecting the warranty the car comes with.

So while on the face of it fixed-price, or free, servicing packages seem like a great deal, it’s up to you as a buyer to decide whether the loss of choice and competition is worth it for a simple life.

Family thanks local children’s hospice for their support The Crunden family from Lewes have thanked Chestnut Tree children’s hospice for their continued support.

Theo Crunden is three years old. He was starved of oxygen at birth and suffered a brain injury as a result. He now has quadriplegic cerebral palsy, uncontrolled epilepsy, secondary dystonia, and is registered as blind.

Theo’s mum, Lucy, has spoken about the daily challenges Theo and his family face.

“Theo is up several times a night; he can’t turn himself and gets uncomfortable, so we need to help him.” Lucy explains, “We are up early as it takes around three hours to get Theo ready. He is on nine different types of medication at the moment, and the day starts with his first dose, which has to be given to him slowly through his feeding tube, followed by his breakfast. Then we dress Theo, which is a challenge as he is floppy but spasms frequently.

If Theo is not at nursery, we normally start the morning with a physiotherapy or speech and language programme, followed with some sort of appointment. Then we repeat the process of medication and lunch, a small sleep in the afternoon, more medication, dinner, and eventually helping him get off to sleep.

We first heard about Chestnut Tree through our paediatrician, we were struggling at home, we weren’t sleeping and things were just getting too much. When they first recommended a hospice I was shocked but my mind was soon put to rest when one of the Chestnut nurses, Laura, explained how they could help, and my perception was completely altered.

The first time we visited Chestnut Tree House we thought it was absolutely incredible, the facilities are phenomenal.

We find it really hard to find somewhere for Theo to enjoy, he needs stimulation and Chestnut provides that. What makes it even better is that we can do this as a family Theo’s little sister Mabel can also join in and enjoy playing with her brother. The members of staff are also amazing As well as being able to have weekend stays and use the day care facilities at Chestnut Tree House, we also plan to start using Chestnut Tree’s community team so that we can receive care at home.

I would like to say a huge thank you to Chestnut Tree. We are so lucky to be able to go there, they are absolutely incredible.”
