Colouring isn’t just for kids!

T

he craze for adult colouring is not a new one. It has long been used in establishments with special needs adults as a way of helping to calm and control stress and anxieties.

‘Mindfulness’ has become this year’s buzzword and has seen the sale of Zen and Anti-stress colouring books soar. Colouring mandalas and patterns can be used as a form of active meditation, focussing attention on simple, repetitive motion. Concentrating on this gentle activity helps to focus the brain, blocking out intrusive thoughts, which in turn, can contribute to reducing stress.

An idea for a social colouring club in Crawley came about after Jilly Ebers wanted to raise some money for the Alzheimer’s Society. Over the years, she has raised funds through various events after her Father was diagnosed with the condition.

“It all started with my Father who had Alzheimer’s for about 15 years and my mother and myself looked after him

for many years until he went into a home. I saw so many people with it that I felt I needed to do a bit of fundraising. For many years I made cakes, sweets, held Christmas fairs and parties, all trying to bring in a little money.”

With the rising popularity of adult colouring books in recent years, Jilly saw a possible opening for another way of raising funds while relaxing and making new friends.

“I then decided to try and run an adult colouring club for people with the same interests and roughly similar ages so I found a venue at the Emerald Sports and Social Club in Southgate. The members are around the same age and tend to be 50+, but no one is

excluded, although we do ask that people are over 14 years old. This isn’t because we have anything against children but the club is aimed at adults and relaxation. We have a good old chat with each other, and I have about 14 members on the books at the moment but we would like a few more as it is a very friendly and happy environment and all the profit goes to the Alzheimer’s Society.

In turn, the Alzheimer’s Society help me through the year with banners and badges to put on my table at various fetes and fairs.”

There is an entrance charge of £5 which includes tea, coffee or cold drink, home-made sandwiches, cakes and scones with jam and cream. Once a month there is a free raffle.

Crawley Leukaemia Research group get quizzical!

S

et up as a locally based charity to support research into this disease, Crawley Leukaemia Research has its roots as a branch of the charity that is now named Bloodwise.

Marc Calloway, group Secretary, explained, “We recently converted to a fundraising group, which means that we have the flexibility to specify where the funds raised are allocated, such as local research projects, say at the Royal Marsden or the University of Brighton.

The group is run by a small committee of five people directed by Chairperson Jackie Bowers. Our main aim is to raise funds by running events, including collections and quizzes, at venues such as Haskins Garden Centre, Snowhill and St Edwards, Pound Hill both to whom we are very grateful for their support.”

The charity aims to transfer 100% of funds raised to research. A fundraising quiz is taking place at St Edwards on 16th September, which members of the public are invited to come along to.

Asked how the group was initially set up, Marc said,

“As with most charitable groups, people become involved because they have been touched in some way.

Within our group, this has been due to some of us having close relatives who have been struck down with the illness and have had to go through the existing gruelling treatment regime that involves chemotherapy, radiation treatment and bone marrow transplants, which are not always successful. The aim of the research is to find more successful and less invasive treatments.”

Leukaemia is a cancer of blood-forming cells. The origins of the word derive from a Greek word for ‘white blood’.

With Leukemia, the cancerous cells in the bone marrow spill out into the bloodstream. There are many different types of leukaemia, and the treatment and prognosis vary for each different type. There are two main types of acute leukaemia, Acute Myeloid and Acute lymphoblastic. There are also three main types of chronic leukaemia, Chronic Myeloid, Chronic Lymphocytic and a rare type called Hairy Cell leukaemia. Generally speaking, chronic leukaemia’s are slowly developing, long-term conditions.

There are a number of ways you can help Crawley Leukaemia Research Group apart from joining the committee. They are always in need of helpers at collection days when they have a day or weekend of collecting at a venue and require several volunteers to fill the rota.

Also, they sometimes help with other Leukaemia fundraising events like sponsored walks where they require help with registration and marshalling.

From the Tudors to the Tsars:

The incredible history of Rowfant House Rowfant House is a historical gem buried in the Sussex countryside, surrounded by twenty-two acres of idyllic grounds and woodland with its own private lake.

ntil recently the house was used as a venue for conferences, weddings and other events and ran a care home within the estate, which has now sadly closed and is up for sale.

Rich in history, it has been host to many important figures in the past. Built in the 15th Century, Rowfant House is an Elizabethan manor house, originally built from locally sourced Horsham stone.

As you walk into the grand entrance hall, there is a panel of three original portraits belonging to Henry VIII, his father Henry VII and his daughter Elizabeth I, providing a slice of Tudor history.

From 1848 -1962 the Rowfant Estate was owned by the colourful Locker-Lampson family.

Frederick Locker Lampson had five children from two marriages, and he made his home in Sussex.

He was a bibliophile, poet and had a passion for book collecting. Chronic illness prevented him from living an active life, but his love of books enabled him to accumulate a library within the house.

He promoted the style of ‘cabinet book collecting’ and catalogued his own collection of rare books, first editions, prints and manuscripts in a volume named after Rowfant.

Frederick’s son, Commander Oliver Stillingfeet Locker-Lampson also had a literary-driven career

in journalism before being elected to the House of Commons as a Conservative Unionist in 1910.

In 1914 Oliver received a commission in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve during World War One, and he served on the Western Front and in Russia, commanding the Russian armoured car squadrons.

During his escapades in the Great War, Oliver became entangled in Russian politics, and there are stories to suggest that he was asked to participate in the assassination of Rasputin.

Becoming close to the Tsar of Russia, he agreed to help smuggle him to safety in the West after abdication; however he swore to Oliver that he would not leave his wife and children and as a result of this, they died.

After the war, Oliver fought against fascism in both Britain and Europe, serving with the Home Guard in the Second World War and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order.

He was one of the few Conservative politicians to support Churchill during the 1930s and they developed a personal and trustworthy friendship.

While Oliver was in service, the Ministry of Defence requisitioned Rowfant House and Churchill spent many hours there.

After the war, the Latvian Lutheran Church in London started to lease the empty Rowfant House from the Locker-Lampson family.

Britain recruited Latvian people as European volunteer workers before this, Latvian people had fled their country before its occupation by the Soviet Union and were living in Germany as displaced persons.

Volunteers revamped the property, it was then used for living in and community events.

In 1962 the Latvian Church bought the property from the Locker-Lampson family and Rowfant House Ltd was set up.

Henry Smith’s message to commuters

T

he Prime Minister has appointed a new Rail Minister; Paul Maynard and I have already welcomed him to Three Bridges Station in one of his first ministerial visits to personally make him aware of the necessity of resolving the unacceptable level of service on Southern and Thameslink routes.

As I told the Minister; while the £6 billion Thameslink upgrade programme with its new 12 carriage trains each carrying up to 1,750 people is welcome, the ongoing disruption we are suffering is untenable.

Govia Thameslink Railway (who deliver both Southern and Thameslink services) continue to provide an unacceptable level of performance, which has not been helped by trade unions, whose strikes and continued levels of staff ‘sickness’ have only added to the chaos.

GTR have taken on more than 200 extra drivers, however we simply are not seeing anything

resembling an improved service due to ongoing industrial action. As I write, the RMT are again calling a ballot for their staff to take industrial action.

I continue to work alongside Members of Parliament from all parties in calling for GTR and the unions to work alongside the Department for Transport to ensure a resolution.

I am also supporting a campaign from consumer champions ‘Which?’, calling for clearer information for passengers on how to claim for a refund due to rail delays, and for all train operators to offer cash as a default for refunds.

Please be assured of my continuing attention with regard to this issue.

Take to the skies for St Catherine’s Hospice Want to try something daring? St Catherine’s Hospice is looking for thrill seekers to fly 10,000 feet through the clouds at speeds of up to 125 miles per hour to support their local hospice.

St Catherine’s is appealing for anyone to skydive on a date of their choice this autumn in aid of their local hospice and to help St Catherine’s celebrate 33 years of supporting the terminally ill.

If you are feeling brave enough to give skydiving a go, you will take on the challenge at the Old Sarum Airfield in Salisbury where you will be strapped to an experienced instructor from GoSkydive.

Last year, Michelle Hanley skydived for St Catherine’s. She said: “I am scared of heights so it was a huge challenge, but it was nothing compared to the bravery that St Catherine’s patients and families face.”

Whether you’ve taken to the skies before, or want to experience the thrill of trying something new, everyone is welcome. Organisers say all that is required is a dare devil attitude!

The gardens here at the Temple are some 28 acres excluding the buildings, and are a traditional English country garden with wonderful walks through the parkland. These walks vary from a small stroll around the Temple itself where we have traditional flower beds with spring and summer bedding displays to the magnificent Rhododendron walks which are breath taking when in flower in May. We have woodland walks with Bluebells, Wood Anemones, not to mention the trees, Oaks, Atlantic Ceders, Lime Trees, and Yew Trees, the list goes on.

We are happy to cater for local school groups, youth organisations, senior citizen organisations, W.I’s, horticultural/gardening clubs, religious groups and any individuals with an interest of the above.

Fostering means temporarily supporting a child who cannot live at home while adoption involves a legal process by which you become a permanent parent to the child.

However for either of these you will need a spare room and desire to make a difference to a child’s life.

The smell of the oil, the sound of the iconic race engines and the sights of the vintage fashion of the 1940s, 50s and 60s – it’s time to get revved-up for the Goodwood Revival 2016!

The three-day festival held each September since 1998 is a unique celebration of the glory days of Goodwood Motor Circuit and the halcyon days of motor racing. Here’s your guide to the best of the festival with a list of the highlights – whether you’re a petrol head, or not be sure to get into top gear with the Goodwood Revival 2016 – Sussex’s biggest and best motor parties!

The sartorial element of the Revival has now become as important to the event as the cars whizzing around the track and each day of the Revival a group of fashion experts choose the people with the finest outfits to be entered into a daily Best Dressed Competition.

Wit and improvisation are just some of the qualities that the judges are looking for!

This year the Revival takes place between Friday, September 9 and Sunday, September 11 and it’s all the drama of wheel-to-wheel racing and de-rigueur period dress. Be ready to watch hundreds of rare and priceless cars driven

Runner beans Be full of beans for this age-old favourite – long, coarse and crunchy, runner beans are synonymous with late summer when they’re piled on a plate and butteredup with the addition of some cracked black pepper, or as an accompaniment to a home cooked roast dinner.

Courgettes Go green! The courgette is very versatile and easy-to-cook, so it’s little wonder that this humble vegetable is so popular.

It’s dark green sheen, firm cream flesh and sweet flavour are enjoyed from late August into September – so, however, you serve it, this vegetable is most definitely in this season!

Quick & Tasty Tip Try adding a handful of blackberries to an apple crumble or for a sweet treat, warm-up some blackberries in a pan with a little good French brandy and some sugar - delicious served with ice cream and sprinkled with toasted flaked almonds.

Festival fact file Harvest celebrations pre-date Christianity and traditionally symbolic corn dolls were made out of the last sheaf of the harvest – thought to contain the spirit of the corn.

The harvest festival in Judaism is called Sukkot, an eight-day holiday the first of which is a full festival celebration with special prayers and holiday meals.

Harvest celebrations are not just about agriculture. In October there are festivals giving thanks for the fishing seasons, including at Billingsgate in London.

Traditionally, harvest festival is held on the Sunday nearest the harvest moon – the full moon occurring closest to the autumn equinox (22 or 23 September)

Your guide to encouraging your child to do their homework – it’s about the right environment, setting boundaries and understanding the benefits

e’ve all heard those groans about homework from our children: ‘but it’s not due in until next week,’ ‘can I do it at the weekend instead?’ and the infamous ‘what’s the point?’

But with homework playing an important part in our child’s lives and development, it’s time to get into a healthy homework routine. If you’re struggling now we’re into September, and the new school term is in full swing, here’s some handy tips:

Allocate a space – be it a room or just a small area in the living room, kitchen or their bedroom, which is a peaceful place to absorb information.

Set up a desk or table, stocked with a homework diary, pens, notebooks, a calculator and a dictionary, away from all distractions to keep your child focused during the designated time. If possible, have a homework chart, showing their progress and achievements to keep them engaged!

Create an inspirational environment You know your child best – how do they learn? What makes them tick? What gets their creative juices flowing?

Do they absorb more by reading or through getting hands-on? By teaching and supporting them in a way that encourages the natural way in which they learn, it makes the homework experience a whole lot easier. Expand on this by creating a relaxing, yet stimulating working environment to encourage them further – it needn’t be difficult either!

Set those boundaries All parents know that children need boundaries, and it’s even more necessary when it comes to homework. It takes an average of 21 days to get into a new routine, so it’s key to enforce the homework boundaries as soon as you can so that it becomes almost second nature. If children know that after coming home, having a snack and chat about their day, that it’s then homework time, the routine can be quickly established. Be on-hand to help them, should they get stuck but also encourage them to learn, or to problem solve, by themselves.

Reward work well done Whether it’s doing an activity that they love or organising for a friend to come over for dinner, acknowledging the efforts and hard work put into homework time will further spur your child on!

Pets are much more than just animals to millions of us Brits; in fact they’re part of the family! What is the relationship between the family and the pet all about?

We asked 14-year-old Jasmine, who joined the magazine for a week’s work experience for her thoughts about why we love our pets so much.

G

rowing-up without pets, I don’t meet a lot of domestic animals, and looking after them does not come naturally.

However, through friends with dogs, cats and other pets, I can see how much pets mean to their owners and the deep connections.

Ater meeting my friend’s pets I begin to love them almost as much as their owners do - their eager acceptance of a stranger is a quality in animals, I love.

Pets have been a topic of conversation for so long, and I hear the age old argument: ‘which are better, dogs or cats?’ almost all the time.

To me, which you prefer comes down to your character - cat lovers that I have met are creative, interesting people, who appear reclusive at first but are actually warm and caring.

On the other hand, dog people are usually fun, energetic, optimistic, and very social. I will

always be on the fence as to which I prefer.

Cats are independent - I find them easier to understand because their outlook is something I can relate to.

Liking exotic pets says a lot about personality my friends with animals such as parrots and snakes are the ones who like travelling the most.

People who like exotic species often have a sense of adventure and freedom. Owners of birds such as parrots, are expressive.

Looking at my friends’ families and their relationship with their pets, having a pet seems to create a bond between them.

Joining one of their families ‘cat watching’ as their cats play, it’s great to see how they all bond laughing at their antics.

This is could be why viral ‘cat fail videos’ are popular – as they serve as a good way to avoid doing things that need doing!

Also, taking a dog with my friends to the park is a lot more fun than going without one, and walking dogs does seem to bring a family together.

The relationship between children and animals is an adorable one, and there is nothing more endearing than seeing how fascinated my friends’ younger siblings are with animals.

Even though I do not have much experience with them, I will always love and care about animals because I can talk to an animal like I would to a close friend and they always

listen without question, even though they do not understand completely.

I think pets do wonders for coping with stress and sadness; they are caring and serve as amazing companions to the people who are lucky enough to own them.

Beautiful bathrooms on a budget

Big ideas, small budget? Don’t despair it’s easy to create a luxurious looking bathroom without spending a fortune.

f your bathroom is looking tired or oldfashioned, there is plenty you can do to bring it bang-upto-date on a budget!

By simply using plain white sanitary ware as your starter, we’ve got lots of ideas to help you to create that elegant and up-market look all without breaking the bank, but still giving you the wow factor!

If you already have a white bathroom suite, there’s absolutely no reason to replace it. If you haven’t, and can budget for one then, it will give you a great base from which to begin your bathroom makeover.

Replacing the taps on your bath and basin with quality fittings will instantly give your suite that much-needed lift the choices are endless from Art Deco or old brass to chrome or brushed steel.

A radiator that doubles as a towel rail will save you buying the items separately.

A cheaper option would be to attach a towel holder above your existing radiator or lean a towel ladder against the wall.

If you’re fond of the shabby chic look and have the room, a step ladder with towels stacked neatly on the rungs, is a fun way to display them.

Instead of pricey stone or marble wall or floor tiles, find a look-alike ceramic or porcelain one widely available from good tile shops, which are attractive, stain-resistant, light and therefore easy to lay.

When putting in new tiles save by only covering specific areas; perhaps up to half height around the room, or else just the splash backs next to the bath and basin. Use paint everywhere else.

If you can’t afford to replace your current flooring – a washable rug will give an instant luxurious lift. Invest in some good quality towels to match and these can be changed with your rug to reflect the seasons.

Although a fully-mirrored wall might not be in your budget, it will give a sense of light to your bathroom. Otherwise, look for mirrors to fit with your theme and place them above the basin and the bath.

Instead of installing a blind or having your windows sandblasted, ensure your privacy cheaply and quickly by using glass etching spray or stick-on film which these days comes in a wide range of patterns.

Finally, to make the room truly original, go for storage that suits your style. Custom built, fitted storage can be expensive so choose standard-sized off-the-peg units or combine a simple set of shelves with free-standing storage such as trolleys, chests, cupboards or baskets. If you scour auctions, car boots sales and antique and collectable stores you may grab not only a bargain but also add a fashionably vintage vibe and heaps of personality.

Do you DIY or get someone in?

If you do some of the work yourself it will save money but know your limitations.

Tiling and painting are straightforward and even some plastering and flooring can be tackled by a competent DIY-er.

If necessary top up your skills by buying a good book, checking out online tutorials or signing up for an evening class. If in doubt, however, call someone in.

Remember, that there are strict safety regulations controlling what work may be carried out by a non-professional, for instance with electrical work. Check with your local building control officer if you need more details.

Fitting a new shower? Know your water supply system and make sure you choose a shower that will work with it. If your water pressure is low, for example, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll need to choose a type that can cope with this.

Otherwise, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have to install a pump as well. Fit a water-saving shower head at the same time, and you will save money and help the environment every time you use it.

T

hough these are the dictionary definitions of a weed, ask any gardener, and you will get a different answer about their definition of a weed, but all will agree that they are a menace!

In my garden, for instance, my Alchemilla Mollis, left unchecked, does indeed become a troublesome plant, especially when it overtakes and overshadows other plants in my beds. As can my wild geranium – but neither are traditionally classed as weeds! I occasionally, therefore, have to wage war on them to keep the peace in the beds!

On the other hand, both plants help with keeping other weeds at bay because of their spreading nature – the geranium, in particular, is also good ground cover.

But how do you deal with those other plants (weeds) that if left to their own devices will not only make your garden look untidy but may also be causing your other plants to suffer?

There’s no one-size-fitsall answer, unfortunately, but

applying a multi-pronged attack will help: Weeds set seeds and multiply at an alarming rate unless they are dealt with promptly. The best way to do this if you are limited for time is to cut off its head before it has time to set seed.

Be vigilant before planting, buying plants from a nursery, or moving plants from around the garden, make sure you don’t have any small seedling weeds on the surface of the compost or soil when planting.

Failure to remove these tiny seedlings will multiply your weed problem in the coming weeks, months and years and will cause you no end of annoyance.

Bindweed, nettles or couch grass have far-reaching underground stems, docks and dandelions have very strong roots that are hard just to pull-out.

The only sure-fire way to get rid of all of these types of weed is to dig them out, which can be back-breaking work.

It’s far better, than opting to use a rotovator to turn the ground over.

This will only result in the roots being chopped up and flung far and wide to resettle and re-grow.

The hoe is still the gardener’s friend, keep it sharp and use on your plot regularly.

If you have a large weedy area, cover with a couple of layers of wool carpet - it will need to be placed face down on the weeds and left for 18 months so that the weeds will die from lack of light.

Unfortunately, the old gardener’s saying “One year’s seed is seven year’s weed” contains more than a grain of truth. So, unless you’re prepared to de-head, de-flower and de-root weeds, it’s probably best not to compost them; as you may find you could just be recycling them!

Tyre Health Check As the only points of contact between you and the road, the condition of your tyres is vital so it’s important to check them regularly.

By Ben Morley Tread Depth: Legally they need to be minimum of 1.6mm deep across the middle ¾ of the tread. But it is widely recognised that once half worn, the amount of grip that they provide in the wet drops off rapidly.

Checking your tyres is simple - all you need is a 20 pence piece. Simply slot the coin into the main grooves of your tyre and if the outer ring of the coin is obscured when in place your tread is legal. If you can see any of the outer band, your tyres may be illegal.

Sidewalls: Visually checking your tyres regularly for any signs of wear is imperative, as hitting potholes and mounting or rubbing against kerbs can take its toll. Take the time to look at the sidewalls, checking for bulges and tears.

Don’t run your hands along areas that you can’t see, in case any of the tyres structural metal cords are hanging out. They can be very sharp!

Pressures: Driving with under-inflated tyres for a long time weakens the sidewalls, the result is your vehicle won’t handle as well, and the shoulders of the tyres will also wear out quickly.

You’ll use more fuel too.

If you over-inflate your tyres, your vehicle will be a lot stiffer, meaning road grip will be lessened, and the centre of your tyres will wear out much more quickly.

Are you getting enough Zzzzz’s?

We all know that getting enough sleep is vital to how we function in our daily lives, but despite most of us spending over a third of our lives asleep, for many lack of sleep is a worrying issue.

ccording to the National Sleep Foundation (www.sleepfoundation.org) the advice that we have all been given throughout our lives that eight hours sleep a night is the optimum, still stands for adults.

Underlying causes of insomnia may be psychological or neurological, or just the byproduct of a busy or chaotic life, according to the London Sleep Clinic.

Short-term insomnia is often triggered by a lifestyle change or event; but many things will contribute to the quality of your sleep including your diet, exercise levels and any stress levels.

Stimulants such as tea and coffee will also have an effect, especially if taken just before bedtime.

The National Sleep Foundation recommended sleep ranges are: Newborns (0-3 months) 14 – 17 hours per day Infants (4 – 11 months) 12 – 15 hours per day Toddlers (1 – 2 years) 11-14 hours Preschoolers (3-5 years) 10 – 13 hours School-age children (6 – 13) 9 – 11 hours Teenagers (14-17) 8 – 10 hours Younger adults (18 – 24) 7 – 9 hours Adults (25-64) 7 – 9 hours Older Adults (65+) 7 – 8 hours)

Around 30-40% of us will have difficulty sleeping at times, but what if you aren’t getting enough sleep on a regular basis?

Does counting sheep work? Probably not, here are some tips that might:

• Make sure your bedroom is cool – 60 – 67 degrees is an optimal temperature • Don’t nap during the day if at all possible.

• Try to get some exercise every day. Vigorous exercise is best, but even a gentle walk is better than no exercise at all.

• Make sure you have a supportive mattress and pillows. If your mattress is over nine years old, invest in a new, good quality one.

• Regulate your body clock by going to bed and getting up at the same time, even on weekends.

• Make sure your bedroom is quiet and dark.

Blackout blinds, an eyemask and earplugs can help as will turning off all electrical appliances before you tuck-in.

What if you still can’t sleep?

Chronic insomnia can be linked to depression or a medical condition. If you are concerned that your inability to sleep is an ongoing issue it is advisable to seek professional help, especially if you are experiencing other symptoms such as:

We asked Katie Farmer from Katie Farmer Counselling for advice for when you just can’t sleep: “Stress and sleep deprivation are closely linked.

A good bedtime routine can help you to self-soothe and begin to unwind. I like to start with a warm bath and my favourite Dead Sea bath salts (which are my secret magic cure for reducing anxiety due to the skins absorption of magnesium which calms the nervous system).’

“Avoiding all stimulating activities, and unwinding with a book or relaxing music, turning off phones, emails, etc. Taking a few minutes each night before bed to write down your worries and the things you need to do the next day, then gently reminding yourself that you will return to the list in the morning.’

“If you find yourself waking in the night and worrying (normally including about lack of sleep!) get up and do something boring or my favourite trick is to take the time to meditate (something which I always want to do but struggle to find the time in daily life) it doesn’t take long for me to find my zen (and sleep) and I see this as a win-win”

If you just don’t know where to start, here’s our handy checklist, written by our resident bride!

rom my experience of planning our recent summer wedding, organising ‘the best day of your lives’ is filled with plenty of highs, a few lows and general confusion about what to do and when! If, like me, when I got engaged, you’re not sure how to start preparations, here’s a few tips and tricks I learnt along the way…

As soon as you get engaged Once you’ve celebrated your amazing engagement, start thinking about your budget, theme and what style of wedding you’d love. This will impact the time of year you tie the knot, the type of venue and your chosen wedding colours.

For example laidback, bohoinspired weddings conjure up ideas of pastel, hazy summer celebrations held in barns, while elegant and traditional big days are perfect for magical winter ceremonies in country homes or hotels.

Once you know what type of wedding gets you (and your partner’s!) heart a-fluttering, get viewing venues and set your date! It’s also advisable to think

about your guest list, to make sure the venue is suitable (i.e. not too big or too small) for the number of people you want to party with!

As soon as you’ve found the venue/s (if having your ceremony and reception at different places), book!

Don’t forget to buy your wedding insurance too!

For many of us excited brides – the moment we’ve been waiting for has arrived too; dress shopping! Going a year before (as if we needed an excuse!) allows you to find your dream dress style, without stress!

A year before If you haven’t already been eyeing up potential wedding photographers / videographers, 12 months beforehand is the time to start researching, after all those are the memories we’ll be able to look at again and again. It’s also the perfect time to book your wedding DJ (this was one thing that shocked me during my planning process! I thought it would be one of the last things to do!), transport and wedding catering.

Send out those Save the Date cards so that guests don’t book holidays or trips away and are available for your big day. Also, decide on your chosen wedding party and ask your bridesmaids, maid of honour, best man, groomsmen and ushers to play a part in your special day!

Six months before Decide which florist you want to create your big day blooms and the types and styles of flowers you would like. Research the professional make-up artist and hair stylist/s who will make you look and feel your best – and if possible organise a trial for a month or two before the big day so that you can be sure you will look picture-perfect! It’s also time to talk cake with your baker – which usually involves tasting!

As proud cake connoisseurs, this was most definitely one of our favourite parts of the whole planning process! Having a DIY wedding or planning on making lots of decorations?

Get crafting! You’ll be surprised just how quickly the next few months fly by!

Three months to go Send out the invitations and ask everyone to confirm their attendance. Choose and order your wedding rings, get those wedding party outfits sorted (and make sure the groom has everything too!).

Brides, don’t forget your accessories; underwear, shoes, jewellery and any hairpiece and veils should be ticked off the to-do list.

Ceremony-wise, discuss your service with your vicar, registrar or celebrant. If you haven’t already, book your honeymoon and create your guest and gift list Organise your hen and stag dos!

One month to go Confirm final numbers with your venue and caterers, so everything runs smoothly on the day. Pay your final balances with other suppliers too. Have your final wedding dress fitting and start writing speeches and thank you’s. For ultimate comfort on your wedding day, get wearing those shoes around your home too – no bride wants blisters! Enjoy your hair and makeup trial and party the night away on your hen do!

One week to go Now the wedding’s in sight it can be a bit full on. Confirm everything with all of your suppliers and if possible, send

them a day plan with time scheduling. Make sure you know what time they are all arriving too! Discuss all plans with your wedding party (don’t forget to buy gifts for them!) and let them know what you need them to do. Collect your wedding outfits and treat yourself to some TLC time with a spray tan, manicure and pedicure. If you are jetting off on honeymoon shortly afterwards, pack those suitcases, locate your passports and pick up your travel money.

All that’s left to do is to gave fun and try to take in every moment. From one bride to another, the day really does fly by!

Bridge Contract bridge or simply bridge is a playing card-based game using a standard 52-card deck played by four players in two competing partnerships with partners sitting opposite each other around a table.

The game is popular with millions playing worldwide as part of clubs, in tournaments and also online, although the version online is a far cry from the game which first became popular in Britain in the 1890s.

The history of bridge stretches back to the 19th century and evolved through the 20th century into that which we understand to be the present day game – it departed from the traditional game of whist and Biritch.

Consisting of several deals with each progressing through four phases, the game of

bridge entails dealing the cards, the auction, or bidding, playing the cards, and finally scoring the results of the bridge contest.

Bowls There are many indoor bowls venues locally; it’s played similarly to lawn bowls with the objective being to get as close to the jack as possible – the jack is a smaller ball which players take turns to aim for.

The earliest known forms of bowling date back to Ancient Egypt and today it’s a popular sport throughout Britain and across the world as far afield as Canada, New Zealand and Malaysia.

Played on strips of replica green often called a rink which is 40m long and 100m wide – it can be played in singles, doubles, triples and there also games in which teams of four players take part.

One of the big attractions of indoor bowls is its accessibility – it’s a game that can be played by all ages, gender and, with modest adaptions, wheelchair users and the blind and partially sighted can also play.

Minimum equipment is required to play, just bowls and a pair of good quality bowling shoes! Inspired to get involved in bowls?

Badminton The modern game first played in the 19th century, developed in what was British India, and is now an international sport very popular in Asia with international competition dominated by Chinese athletes.

The sport, part of the Olympic programme since the Barcelona games of 1992 is most commonly played in either a singles or doubles format and all you require are a shuttlecock and racquet, and away you go!

The sport demands excellent fitness from players. You’ll need a good level of aerobic stamina as well as good agility, high-end physical strength, fast-rate speed, great precision and hand-eye-co-ordination.

Points are scored by striking the shuttlecock with the racquet and landing it in the opposition’s

half of the court – each side may only strike the shuttlecock once before it passes across the net in play.

Play ends once the shuttlecock has struck the floor of the court, or a fault is called by either an umpire or by the opposing team. Inspired to get involved in badminton? If you like high-energy hobbies, it’s for you!

ontinuing our year of tenth birthday celebrations, this month we’re remembering the locations of our magazine from the very outset of publishing back in 2006 to the present day.

In 2006 the magazine had very humble beginnings, the magazine started-out on the dining room table of co-founder Nikki Relffe-Arnold before being relocated to a spare bedroom.

As the magazines grew from one title covering the RH10 postcode to now six titles the business moved-on firstly into a garden building at Nikki’s home.

In 2010, as the business outgrew the office, affectionately known as “The Shed” the decision was taken to move to a suite of offices at Rowfant Business Centre, just outside of Crawley Down, and six-years-on we’re still there and happily settled.
