Songs from the heart

If you enjoy singing, an East Grinstead choir is the place to make your voice heard

S

inging makes you feel good, and one place where anyone can enjoy its benefits is in a choir.

In the past few years, many people have chosen to become members of inChoir, which has 13 branches in this area stretching from Shoreham to Oxted, and Crawley to Tunbridge Wells.

Musical director Mark Heppell sets the music across all 13 of the choirs so that everyone is singing the same repertoire.

He also runs six of the inChoirs, including one in East Grinstead, which meets at the Jubilee Community Centre in Charlwoods Road, on Tuesdays.

Mark started inChoir in February 2009, “I’d been involved in am dram for a while and thought it would be nice to have a singing group where everyone could be involved,” he says.

“I liked the idea that people who liked singing could, if they wanted to, bring their mum, sister, husband, anyone in the family, to something that they would all enjoy.’

“When you sing it makes you feel good – if you’ve had a tough day at work or with the kids you can came and sing and it improves your mood.”

The choir’s repertoire focuses on popular songs from the 1950s to the present day. “Some of the songs we’ve been singing recently include I Only Want to Be with You, Heatwave, Thinking Out Loud and Moon Dance,” Mark adds.

During the past seven and a half years, the East Grinstead choir has played with other inChoirs at many venues, including at the London Bridge City festival and Brighton Dome.

The choir has also performed locally at the town’s midsummer market and will be appearing at East Grinstead Live on August 7.

They also get to go further afield. “We’ve just returned from Tuscany where we all put on several pounds with the pasta!” Mark says. “We sang there with a local choir, which was an absolute joy.”

Other visits have included a trip to Disneyland in Paris and a cruise in Norway to see the Northern Lights.

Being part of the choir is also a way of making new friends.

“Many friendships have been forged although we’ve not had a marriage yet!” Mark says.

“During the summer, we are busy performing at summer fetes and shows. We run along school terms and have August off so we will be getting back together again in September.

“It is an extraordinary privilege to stand in front of a group of people and to teach and conduct them. When they all sing together it sounds amazing. It washes over your and I defy anyone standing where I am not to get a real buzz out of it.

“The key is that everyone enjoys it. What we do transfers itself to the audience and everyone has a great time.”

Check out hotel’s stylish history Alexander House Hotel in Turners Hill has links to the poet Shelley and the Queen Mother

O

ne of the most exclusive hotels in the South-East, Alexander House, has a fascinating history that reflects a bygone age when country house living was the epitome of elegance and style.

These days, the Alexander House Hotel and Utopia Spa, as it is now known, is a luxury, five-star boutique hotel. Set in 120-acres of beautiful parkland, just outside Turners Hill, it welcomes guests from all over the world.

However in earlier times the house had other functions, being used mainly as a private home and once as a retirement home for clergy.

While the early history of the property is a little unclear, there are connections to Roman times with coins from the era being found nearby.

In the 14th century, the area where the hotel stands today was a flat and boggy piece of land known as Fenland.

The area didn’t get drained until ponds were dug to serve Fen Place Mill nearby.

The oldest part of today’s house, facing the south lawn, appears to have once been a farmhouse dating from the 17th century. A stone marked 1608 sits in a boundary wall and is

believed to have been a lintel from an earlier building.

The house can also claim to have links with the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, having once been the home of his grandmother, Helen. The daughter of Roger Bysshe, she married John Shelley of Horsham thereby uniting the two names.

Tithe records of 1842 show that Fen Place was owned by Sir Timothy Shelley before later in the same century, belonging to the Oxley family, who had connections in the City.

When a Wren church in London was demolished the family rescued oak panels and carvings, which they installed in the property. Two panels remain in the hotel’s Chalfont Room.

Further additions to the house, including the fireplace in the hall, were made by William Campbell, a former governor of the Bank of England, who bought the estate in 1909.

After he died in 1920, his widow put the house – which included 10 bedrooms for domestic servants - up for sale at £30,000. The estate that came with it included 740 acres of land with six farms.

There was another change of ownership in 1953 when Fen Place was opened as a retirement home for the clergy by the Queen Mother.

30 years later the mansion was bought and restored by new owners who opened it as a hotel, renaming the venue Alexander House after its chairman, Earl Alexander of Tunis.

With its splendid décor and furnishing, works of art and offering classic and French style cuisine the hotel became known for combining tradition with modern-day comforts.

Today, it continues to maintain that fine reputation as a luxury hotel and spa with a feeling of a time gone by.

‘Hollow Dog’ – It’s never too late to change!

harpthorne based film maker, Clive Martin has recently completed a project on celebrated sculptor, Maurice Blik. The resulting documentary, Hollow Dog, was Premiered at the end of June at The Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square and will be submitted to The Raindance Festival this September and the Sundance Festival in January 2017.

The initial idea came about after Clive was asked to edit some film about ceramist, Bob Washington. Although at that time, Clive was working as a teacher at Ardingly College, he had studied and attained his first Degree in Film and Video.

He suggested to Bob’s wife, Sue, that due to the quality of the film clips, rather than just edit, he could produce a new short film. During the making of ‘Out of the Tub’, Clive visited some of Bob’s work at Deborah Blik’s gallery in Tiptree, Essex. Whilst here, Clive began chatting to a man in overalls he assumed to be the caretaker, who was standing outside. It turned out they shared something in common in their careers in the teaching profession. After chatting for almost half an hour on the subject, in the final few minutes of their conversation, the man announced he was a sculptor and invited Clive to see his work. Maurice led Clive through nearby double garage

doors in to his workshop. Clive was impressed by the high quality of the large sculptures he found inside and felt strongly that Maurice had a story to tell. Clive found the contrast of the power of the work, against Maurice’s calm, understated demeanour intriguing.

Maurice told him he studied sculpture at Hornsea College of Art but went on to Teacher Training College and left his art work behind to help provide for his young family. His wife was an artist working in clay and also a commercial artist, producing work for large companies such as Heals. Maurice occasionally found himself helping out with orders. At one point, she got a commission to produce a ‘Horses Head’ trophy and whilst the client was with his wife, Maurice went away and knocked one up out of clay on the spot. As a result, the client was so impressed, they commissioned Maurice to produce the work. It was then, in his 40’s, that he left his teaching job and simultaneously his marriage broke down.

This change of career struck a parallel in Clive’s own life.

Clive, also in his 40’s said; “Spielberg talks about listening to your inner voice and I knew teaching was not a long term path for me and it was around this time that I began to look for something else.”

In the summer of 2014, Clive finished teaching and approached Maurice with a phone call. In order to art fund the project, Clive raised £6000 through Crowd Funding website, Kickstarter. This was how a number of local people first got to hear about the idea.

Maurice had, in fact already had a film made about him previously but this was more of an abstract art film and focussed on the fact that he was a holocaust survivor. Clive was keen that ‘Hollow Dog’ would show that was a part of the story rather than the whole picture. Born in Amsterdam in 1939, Maurice was taken, at age 4, with his family to Bergen Belsen and witnessed first-hand the atrocities of the concentration camp. He stayed silent about his experiences for 40 years until he changed his career path and began creating the series of horses’ heads. He has been prolific in his work ever since.

Over the next year, Clive interviewed other artists and people who commissioned Maurice’s work, rising at dawn to film the magnificent, ‘At First Light’ commissioned

by entrepreneur Sir Peter Michael for the Donnington Valley Hotel in Newbury. He accompanied Maurice to the Holocaust Memorial day at City Hall. In the event, Clive decided against using footage from the day as he didn’t want it to envelope the film. Maurice appeared on BBC News talking about his experiences and the bronze resin ‘Every which way’ was commissioned by the Evacuees Reunion Association. In Hollow Dog, Maurice and his sister talk about their life during the war and the influence that has had on his work. He makes the very poignant observation that after a terrifying encounter with German soldiers, once you have faced death and survived, there is very little else to be afraid of in life.

The finished film is a major achievement as the production process is entirely independent, hence the burden of pre-production, funding, producing a trailer, sound, lighting and editing falls on Clive alone. Even the accompanying musical tracks by Silver Honey were written specifically for the film with some inspiration from Tom Waits.

Clive commented that it was important for him to feel that Maurice considered the film to be a fair representation of his life and work.

Maurice and his wife Debra were pleased with the end results and found it very emotional.

Prior to retirement Ian Waller was a professional genealogist with over 30 years’ experience in English research. He is a former Chairman of AGRA (The Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives) the body which represents professional genealogists throughout England and Wales.

He is a Fellow of the Society of Genealogists and formerly a Trustee and chairman of the Education Comittee. He has puclished several books in the Society’s “ My Ancestor” series including My Ancestor was an Argricultural Labourer, My Ancestor was a Mormon, My Ancestor was in the Royal Navy snd My Ancestor was a Leather Worker.

He currently serves as a Family Search Support Missionary for the LDS Church.

Gone But Not Forgotten…

Since we first starting hitting your doormats ten years-ago several popular and much-loved High Street names have been lost, they may have gone but they’re not forgotten.

1) Woolworths – Perhaps the biggest and saddest loss in recent times, the store giant closed in 2009.

2) MFI – A furniture mainstay for many years, the brand folded in 2008 before being revived in 2011 as online-only retailer before collapsing again in 2015.

3) Comet – Electrical powerhouse hit hard times in 2011 before closing completely in 2012.

4) JJB Sports – The big sportswear brand disappeared from British High Streets in 2012.

5) Blockbuster – The ever-present video-rental chain and firm family favourite closed-down in 2013.

The Red Arrows Return!

The Red Arrows will return this year to the world’s biggest free seafront airshow to be held in Sussex. Attracting crowds of thousands, Airbourne: Eastbourne International Airshow boasts a two-mile flying display line along the Sussex resort’s seafront and is a weekend not to be missed!

eaturing the best in military and civilian aviation with display teams including the much-loved Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, better known as the Red Arrows once again taking to the skies this year those in attendance in Eastbourne will be treated to some show-stopping displays between 11 - 14 August.

Airshow visitors will also have the chance to see the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight on all four days, in a year which marks the 80th anniversary of the Spitfire and the 75th year of the Lancaster Bomber. The Red Arrows will take to the skies on Friday and Saturday much to the delight of event organisers.

Eastbourne Borough Council Lead Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Enterprise, Cllr Margaret Bannister said:

“We are delighted to hear that airshow favourites, the Red Arrows have chosen to return to Airbourne for two great displays this year, which will no doubt attract many thousands.”

The King Air, a multi-engine pilot trainer, part of No. 3 Flying Training School and based at RAF Cranwell, will fly on the Saturday and Sunday with Saturday being what organisers have called as Super Saturday - last year it celebrated its busiest ever day with thousands of spectators visiting the event.

In 2015, the culmination of the 12-hour Super Saturday extravaganza was a twilight pyro-aerobatics, Scouting For Girls on stage and a firework display. 12,000 people watched the chart-topping band from the beach stage alone, with thousands more lining the seafront to see the firework spectacular.

COVER STORY Eastbourne Borough Council Senior Head of Tourism and Enterprise, Phil Evans said: “ It was fantastic to see so many families enjoying the show and many more around town dining into the evening. The atmosphere on Super Saturday was amazing; we’ve never seen the seafront look so vibrant.”

Now in its 24th year, the event is celebrating a recent haul of national awards including Tourism Event of the Year 2015/16 at the Beautiful South Awards and the UK’s Best FREE Airshow by Airscene.

The event isn’t just about scooping national awards; As in 2015 this year will see more than 200 volunteer bucket collectors out in force, with collections by the Rotary Clubs of Sovereign Harbour and Hailsham, along with support from the clubs of Eastbourne, Eastbourne AM, Eastbourne Sovereign and Beachy Head.

The ‘give a quid’ initiative is something organisers have launched - by asking for donations to Airbourne, which helps keep the event free, and in addition, 30% of all donations go to local charities with last year’s event final total raised by Rotary Club volunteers amassing an impressive £36,415.82.

arlier this year, I had the honour of being elected as the Chairman of the new All-Party Parliamentary Group on Blood Cancer.

The Group will bring together MPs and members of the House of Lords, and will promote awareness of blood cancer and highlight the needs of patients with the Government, Parliamentarians, as well as NHS and charity stakeholders.

This is a personal issue for me as four years ago I lost my own mother to a form of leukaemia, I see it as my duty to do all I can to help raise awareness of this disease. There are around 230,000 people in the UK living with blood cancers, and research from the charity Bloodwise has shown that public awareness of blood cancer is low, and that patients often feel isolated and believe these cancers are seen as ‘separate’ from other cancers.

Every 14 minutes in the UK, someone is diagnosed with blood cancer or a related disorder. This is almost 38,000 people every year.

There are 137 types of blood cancer and related disorders. Blood cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the UK. The initial meeting of the group was very productive – over the coming weeks and months, there will be work done behind the scenes to push forward with the aims of the Group. Fun awaits in the great outdoors The school holidays are upon us, and it’s time to let the kids embrace the great outdoors!

hen we were young, summer holidays were spent outside playing with friends, learning to ride our bikes and having adventures away from the stuffiness of the classroom. However, with a recent government survey finding that 74% of the 5-12-year-olds asked are spending less than 60 minutes outside per day, it’s clear that school holiday activities have sadly changed somewhat.

But, what hasn’t changed are the benefits of being outdoors. From developing a love of nature to increased health and wellbeing to developing problem-solving skills and creativity, getting out and about is just as good for your child as it was for our generation –if not more important now we’re in such a technology-reliant world.

A picnic has been a staple summer’s day fixture for years.

Go Gluten Free A dietary revolution spurred-on by both medical reasons and healthy living.

R

ecent research has revealed that freefrom food sales have rocketed in the UK with sales in 2016 expected to reach £531 million – many Brits are changing their diet habits and going against the grains, are you?

Awareness of gluten allergies and coeliac disease (an autoimmune disease which affects 1 in 100 people in the UK) has been raised over the last few years. The popularity in gluten free cooking from fashionable foodie bloggers Deliciously Ella, Madeleine Shaw and Livia’s Kitchen, thankfully means being on a gluten free diet has never been easier.

In fact, in just the four years since I was diagnosed with coeliac disease, 2.6 million homes in the UK now have at least one family member avoiding gluten AND 60% of adults have knowingly bought a free-from gluten product.

Demand for a gluten free diet has become so high that since 2014, all packaged foods must display gluten containing ingredients in bold.

Furthermore, The Food Information Regulations have enforced that when eating out, food businesses must provide allergen information for the meals they serve.

What exactly is gluten and why do people cut it out?

Gluten is a protein found in cereal grains such as wheat, oats, barley, rye and spelt. In a nutshell: it gives food the elasticity to rise. For people, like me, with coeliac disease; the proteins cause our bodies to not only attack these proteins but also attack an enzyme in the cells of the digestive tract, ultimately damaging the intestinal wall. Bloating, fatigue and anaemia are common amongst undiagnosed coeliacs and those with a wheat allergy or gluten intolerance.

Of course, many people without the autoimmune disease or an allergy have chosen to be free from grains commonly associated with gluten because of other benefits including weight loss and a reduction in skin conditions such as eczema and headaches.

What can I eat?

If you’re anything like I was before going g-free, you’ll probably never have paid too much attention to food labels.

However, when cutting gluten from your diet, it’s a must, as you’ll be surprised just what the grainy stuff finds its way into.

HP Brown Sauce is the thing that still shocks me.

Carbohydrate-heavy food favourites such as bread, cakes, pastries, pasta, pizza, porridge,

breaded products, soy sauce and beers are just a few of the things to throw out (although you can buy delicious-can’t-taste-the-difference-free-from options in supermarkets and shops locally!).

In come rice, eggs, fresh fruit and veg and meat!

One of my favourite (and filling) recipes is paella – which should be naturally gluten free, just double check your stock cube ingredients.

Heat a tablespoon of oil in a large frying pan. Add a chopped onion and soften for 5 mins. Stir in a teaspoon of smoked paprika add 300g of paella rice, allowing to cook for a minute. Stir in a 400g tin of chopped tomatoes and 900ml of chicken stock. Cook for 15 mins, stirring occasionally until rice is almost tender.

With liquid still in the pan, add a 400g bag frozen seafood. Stir and cover with a lid and allow to simmer for 5 mins, or until the prawns are cooked through and the rice is tender.Then serve with a little lemon juice!

Eating Out We’re lucky to have a plethora of brilliant restaurants nearby who can cater for our gluten free diet, without fuss, including chains such as Pizza Express, Ask, Bella Italia, Prezzo and Chiquito.

Many pubs throughout the Uncovered region are also free-from friendly including; The Plough and Furrow (Horley), The Duke’s Head (Crawley Down), Old House Inn (Copthorne), The Wiremill Inn (near Lingfield) and The White Hart (Buxted).

For a special occasion, Haywards Heath’s Jeremy’s Restaurant is a must!

Love fish and chips? Fear not, the Master Fryer in both Crawley and East Grinstead offer gluten free chip shop treats on the first (Crawley) and third (East Grinstead) Saturdays of the month!

Roast Cod with Cucumber and Radish Salad Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 10 minutes to 12 minutes Total time: 25 minutes to 27 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients ½ x 235g bag Waitrose Ready Washed Spinach 4 x 150-175g Fresh Icelandic Prime Cod Fillets (skinless) 2 tbsp Cook’s Ingredients Toasted Seasame Oil 2 tbsp seasame seeds ½ large essential Waitrose Cucumber, sliced into matchsticks 75g essential Waitrose Radishes, thinly sliced 3 tbsp whte wine vinegar 1 medium avocado

Method Preheat the oven to 220ºC, gas mark 7. Spread the spinach over a large non-stick baking tray.

Place the cod fi llets on top and drizzle with 1½ tbsp of the sesame oil. Season with cracked black pepper then place in the oven and bake for 10–12 minutes until the fish is just cooked through and opaque.

Meanwhile, place the sesame seeds in a frying pan and toast for 2–3 minutes until golden.

Set aside.

In a bowl, mix the cucumber and radish slices with the vinegar and the remaining sesame oil.

Peel and slice the avocado.

Divide the avocado and spinach out between the plates.

Coconut-ty Conditioning While most of us may have used ‘coconut’inspired haircare products in the past to moisturise our tresses, our new favourite beauty must-have is proven to not only condition locks, but also prevent breakage and even promote hair growth! Make the most of this mighty oil by creating an overnight mask! Melt up to four tablespoons of the coconut oil (depending on hair length and thickness) between your palms and massage into wet hair. Then cover with a towel/ shower cap and leave overnight. Wash off and style as normal to reveal stronger sexy hair.

Long Luscious Lashes and Eyebrows Just as with your hair; coconut oil is fast becoming a must-use product on eyelashes and eyebrows as the oil is gentle enough to use around the sensitive eye area and it helps lashes/ brows to grow and look volumised.

Method: Pour two tablespoons of coconut oil, castor oil and sweet almond oil into a container and mix well. Using either a cotton bud or clean mascara wand, apply the serum to the lashes and brows, before going to bed.

In just a few weeks’ time, your brows and lashes should look thicker, fuller and healthier!

Cooking With Coconut Oil Whether you replace your current cooking oil with this super oil when frying or roasting, or choose to get creative and use it instead of butter on toast, adding it to smoothies and coffees (for an energy boost!) or even using it when baking ‘healthier’ snacks, the options are endless!

Must try recipe:

Vegan chocolate orange truffle bites.

First, grease a small rectangular glass dish with a small amount of coconut oil and line with baking paper. Heat 200g of coconut oil until melted and then add in 100g of cocoa powder, whisking until smooth. Stir in 6tbsp of maple syrup, 2tsp of vanilla extract, 1tsp of orange extract and a pinch of salt until combined, then stir in almost all of the 60g of goji berries, leaving a small handful for decoration. Pour into the glass dish and finish with the remaining goji berries and refrigerate for an hour.

Then cut into slices and enjoy!

Are your feet happy? Happy feet are healthy feet. On average our feet take 7,000 steps a day and are often the most overlooked and overworked parts of our bodies. Now’s the time to think happy feet!

any people take their feet for granted, but our feet contribute massively to our quality of life - if you suffer from poor foot health, it’s less likely that you will engage in physical activity.

The less you do, the less you will be able to do. As a result of inactivity the following problems can arise; a loss of muscle mass, reduced physical strength and a decreased endurance.

All these lead to a higher risk of illness and injuries related to a sedentary lifestyle such as diabetes and heart disease but according to osteopath Ben Barker, there are easy daily exercises.

Ben, who is an osteopath to

Aston Villa Football Club says: “There are exercises you can do each day to strengthen the muscles in the feet and ankles to prevent injuries, enhance mobility and strength.’

“Alternating for one minute, walk on your toes and then your heels and picking up small items with your toes are some of the easiest along with sitting with your feet flat and tapping your toes.”

Research from the College of Podiatry illustrates that 9 out of 10 of us experience some element of foot problem with 1 in 5 admitting to suffering from foot pain often or consistently.

One question often asked

is, what’s the difference between podiatry and chiropody? The short answer is nothing – they mean the same thing! The words are interchangeable.

The UK is largely playing catch-up with the rest of the world by adopting the phrase podiatry. Traditionally chiropody has been seen as routine work but is, in fact, much broader.

Podiatrists treat all lower limb pain which can include sports injuries such as shin splints and joint pain, and can carry out diabetes checks as well as ‘foot MOTs’ including toenail and skin conditioning.

Here are our top tips for keeping your feet in good condition: 1. After washing feet, make sure you dry them thoroughly, especially between your toes.

Fungal organisms thrive on moisture and not having perfectly dry feet is an invitation for a fungal infection.

2. Regularly check your feet for any signs of peeling or scaling, which might be an indication of athlete’s foot.

3. To avoid ingrown toenails, be careful to cut your nails straight across, avoiding rounding the corners. If you notice any change in your toenails such as discolouration, this could signal a fungal infection.

4. Wear shower shoes in public areas such as swimming pools, gym showers or locker rooms – all of which are potential breeding grounds for fungi, resulting in foot infections.

5. Don’t hire footwear at sports venues, wear your own – which should ideally be breathable.

They should also fit well. Tight-fitting shoes are another cause of long-term foot problems.

6. Contrary to popular belief, cotton socks aren’t the best when it comes to sweaty feet – a better choice is a sock made of 60-70% wool and 30-40% man-made fibre, or wool socks with a specialist liner sock inside.

How much does a conservatory cost you?

The Benefits of a Tiled Conservatory Roof If you find that your conservatory isn’t being used as much as you had envisaged because of excessive heat in the summer months and excessive loss of heat in the winter then a tiled roof might be the solution!

If your new conservatory is likely to take up more than half of the land surrounding your house, or if the roof will exceed the highest point of your existing roof you’re likely to need to obtain planning permission.

Are there any downsides?

If your conservatory is going to be south-facing you are going to need to think about how to keep out the heat and glare of the midday sun!

There are plenty of options ranging from window tinting by a specialist who can install a protective film to your glass, to blinds which will both help enormously. Conversely, a north-facing conservatory is going to get chilly during

the autumn and winter months, so it would be worth considering installing some heating.

A conservatory will also reduce the footprint of your garden, but you can more than make up for this with the additional living space it will provide!

No I haven’t turned cookery writer, but you can easily grow some of those tasty and crunchy vegetables that make the backbone of many a Chinese stir-fry... and the great thing is that oriental vegetables do well from late summer sowings, so it’s off to the garden centre (not the takeaway) you go!

Bean sprouts are so easy to grow you could almost do it with your eyes shut. The common types are sprouted mung-beans, and you can either buy packets of seed or a small packet of the beans themselves from your local health food store. They’ll come with easy cultivation instructions and before you know it you’ll have the beginnings of a stir-fry.

Mizuna has got to be one of the most attractive leafy vegetables you can grow. Its green leaves appear soon after sowing the seed in a pot or in open ground, and they add a great spicy flavour to your stirfry and also add a zing to salads and sandwiches.

Pak-choi

And where would your Chinese meal be without that delicious Oriental veg, pak-choi.

It’s another easy vegetable to grow late in the summer: just sow the seeds in a well-forked soil, water, and wait. Thin out as per the instructions of the seed packet (you can eat the thinnings too), then just pinch off the roots and pop the plants into the wok. Pak-choi also grows well in a container of multi-purpose compost.

Radishes add heat as well as crunch, and there are some lovely oriental varieties such as Mantanhong, which is a Britishbred Chinese variety with a superbly crunchy bright red-topink inner flesh and spherical white roots – great for colour and texture and with a sweet almost nutty flavour. Sow in open ground or pots from now until early September for cropping in a few weeks’ time.

Garlic is another essential ingredient. It’s not really the right time of year to plant garlic, but for an unexpected little extra take a few spare cloves and pot them in trays of compost. Keep the compost slightly moist and in a week or two the cloves will start to sprout. What you’re after here are the bright green foliage which adds a definitely garlicy flavour to stir-fries and a touch of colour as well.

Spring onions are another stir-fry component.You won’t get a fully mature crop for harvesting this year unless you’re extremely lucky; but what you will get is a super-young onion that will add both colour and intense flavour to the contents of your wok.

And finally, mushrooms will add a meaty texture to your home-grown vegetable stir-fry.

Kits for growing both oyster and field mushrooms are available in many garden centres or by mail order. It’s not always easy to get right, I know, but the challenge is definitely worth it when you have exotic mushrooms growing in your cellar, garden frame, greenhouse, or shed.

Buying a used car?

By Ben Morley This month I’ve been asked to discuss a survey carried out by webuyanycar.com, which revealed that around 250,000 used-car buyers don’t bother to test drive their potential purchase before handing over their hard earned pennies. A statistic in itself that is slightly ironic as neither do they, but that’s another story entirely. They reckon that 10% of the 1000 car buyers involved in their survey said that they didn’t even turn the key to hear the car running.

An interesting approach, but actually it sounds about right. We often see customers that have just bought themselves a nice second hand car and then find they are coming in to see us a couple of days later because it’s got a noise, or a light on the dash, or worse. Perhaps something that could have been avoided in the first place by a quick spin around the block.

If you’re buying a car, it’s no one else’s money that you’ll be handing over, so it makes sense to at least do a few basic checks before shelling out the cash. Kicking the tyres isn’t these days considered a thorough enough inspection.

There’s plenty of information on the internet with regards basic checks to make, but in terms of actually driving the car, there’s a few things you should always do.

Always hear the car running. Ideally you want to hear it start up from cold as certain problems can lessen

when the engine is warm. Before you turn the key, check the temperature gauge shows cold and just feel the top of the engine and make sure it hasn’t been given a quick run-up to clear the issue before you got there.

When you do start it, listen for unusual rattles, squeals or rotational noises that are in time with, or half the speed of, the engine idle. Also, a quick look rearwards is a good idea, as we don’t want to be seeing a massive amount of smoke, blue or white.

Take the car for a drive. Try and do some around town driving and at least one run up a dual carriageway.

You need to be paying attention to how the clutch feels (if it has one) how the gears feel, whether there is any form of wobble through the steering, if there is any strange behaviour under braking, if you can hear any strange noises in the car. Granted you can’t be expected to know what you’re listening out for, but you can get a feel for the car in general. Look out for any warning lights on the dash coming up, too.

If you are unsure about anything, either ask your local garage to look it over before you buy it, or walk away. It’s easier to find another car that you like than explaining to the bank manager why you need more money for the car that you only just bought.
