Editor's letter
As we welcome the warmer weather, it’s time to ditch the knitwear, and splurge on a new summer wardrobe. We’ve covered everything you’ll need to get you through the season ahead, including swimwear and accessories to dresses and separates to keep you cool and comfortable through the summer months.
Our editorial, Summer Sensation, was shot by Mark Stephenson at The Atlantic Hotel. Andreia Magalhaes models the perfect holiday wardrobe, showcasing the latest in swimwear, coverups and dresses.
Moving on from fashion, the annual kids feature is a bumper this year, covering everything from fertility issues, playtime pieces, and communication when a relationship breaks down. For me, this felt like a very personal feature, having had my own fertility struggles (which I shared in issue 7, and can be found online), I was keen for Jessica to write about the things you can do to help support your fertility journey, Jessica’s article ‘Fertility-Friendly Foods’ can be found on page 36.
I am very fortunate that my co-parenting experience is a good one, however, that is not the case for a lot of separated families, so I welcomed an article offering advice and tips for communication, written by Kate Donohue and Jamie-Lee Morgan from Corbett Le Quesne.
As we move onto lifestyle, we’ve featured everything you need for outdoor entertaining, be it a picnic brunch, an afternoon BBQ, or a movie night.
Joelle Wallser shares her knowledge in ‘Embracing the Magic of the Moon’ which can be found on page 57, whilst Chloe Bowler shares an easy-to-do ‘Walking Workout’ on page 58.
New for this issue is an Arts and Culture section – which includes upcoming exhibitions with ArtHouse Jersey and a feature on The Merchants – a space combining coffee, art and music.
As always, I hope you enjoy reading this issue.

JERSEY MEMORY MAKER
Jersey Memory Maker started life as Freddie’s Footprint in 2011, named after the Founders son, whose footprints were the first to be captured. The business was taken over by Emma in 2022 and rebranded as Jersey Memory Maker, to reflect Emma’s love of making memories, not only through her creative work but also with her daughters, Callie and Olivia.
Casting of hands and feet can be done at any age, but is especially popular with parents of young babies. Capturing the tiniest of hands and feet is especially precious, knowing that they will never be this tiny again. It is a beautiful thing to look back at the tiny hands and feet months or years later and remember just how tiny they once were. They also make a gorgeous addition to any nursery or family home.
Casts can also be taken of siblings, “Mummy and me” hand clasps, complete family frames or other bespoke multi-generational items. Every idea is worked on in consultation with the family and built uniquely from scratch for that truly personal experience.
The most recent offering from Jersey Memory Maker is breastmilk and memorial jewellery. While
memorial jewellery has been around and loved for many years, breastmilk jewellery has risen dramatically in popularity in recent years as mothers look to create a personal keepsake from the magic of their natural liquid gold. The pieces are subtle and stunning, marking the memories of the mothers breastfeeding journey.
While castings and personalised jewellery are the primary focus of the business, Emma is also keen to support charity work and promote maternal mental health. Bump, Baby and Beyond was the first pregnancy and postnatal baby fair from Jersey Memory Maker bringing together professional services, antenatal and postnatal support, baby friendly businesses and groups with all proceeds donated to Philip’s Footprints. This event was hugely successful and a second, bigger version is already in the works for later this year.
For more information on capturing your own precious memories, you can contact @jerseymemorymaker on social media or review more of Emma’s work online at www.memorymaker.je
Fertility-Friendly Foods
With 1 in 6 couples affected by infertility, Jessica Pinel shares her top 5 fertility-friendly foods to help you on your journey.
Fertility is so much more than just 'having a baby'. Did you know... A woman already has all of her eggs at birth? Men may produce a total of 80 to 300 million sperm per ejaculation? The egg appears to choose the lucky sperm in the race's finale? Around 1,000 eggs are lost in each cycle? 1 in 6 couples suffer with infertility?
INFERTILITY
Yes, you read right, 1 in 6! So, can we stop and take a moment to look around at all the couples we may know and acknowledge behind closed doors some of them may be fighting a silent battle with infertility. Infertility is defined as a disease wherein a person fails to conceive a pregnancy after one year or more of regular unprotected sex. Infertility can be physically, emotionally, and sometimes financially exhausting.
FACTORS AFFECTING FERTILITY
For us to support those couples going through infertility, it is crucial that we understand the factors that can optimise fertility and promote healthy pregnancy outcomes. Unfortunately, there are some factors we simply cannot control, including our age, family history, medical history and genetics. On the plus side, there are some factors we can control, such as physical activity, environmental exposure, smoking, drug use, alcohol intake and diet and nutrient intake.
In recent years nutrition has come to the forefront of preventative health as we begin to understand its critical role in many health conditions, including infertility. We can use nutrition to support our hormones, cycle health, egg quality, semen parameters, implantation, the outcome of assisted reproductive technologies and the health of our future baby - It's that powerful!
OPTIMISING THE HEALTH OF YOUR FUTURE BABY
Even if you're not suffering with infertility, don't you want to have the healthiest baby you possibly can? I am excited to say I see some couples who are looking to achieve just that. I recommend reaching out to a registered fertility nutritionist six months before trying to conceive. This gives you three months to build good habits and address any menstrual cycle issues or hormonal imbalances. Then three months of optimal nutrition to support egg quality, semen parameters and implantation, as it takes three months to make a positive impact on your egg and sperm health.
5 TOP FERTILITY-FRIENDLY FOODS TO INCLUDE
DISH UP THE FULL-FAT DAIRY
Full fat is not to be feared. Research has consistently shown that women who incorporate full-fat dairy into their diet are more likely to get pregnant than those who consume skimmed or reduced-fat alternatives. Even a small amount of full-fat dairy can have substantial benefits! Swapping low-fat milk, butter, cheese, and yoghurt with their full-fat is well worth considering for the potential advantages for your fertility and the growth of a developing baby.
PLATE UP ON PLANT PROTEIN
There is a body of evidence suggesting that eating fewer animal sources and more plant sources of protein helps improve ovulatory infertility. One study on 18,555 women observed that intakes of plant protein reduced the risk of ovulatory infertility by a whopping 50%. This is not me telling you to go away and become vegan but simply for you to explore some of the less processed plant-based proteins such as tofu, beans, lentils, chickpeas, nuts and seeds.
GRAB THOSE WHOLE GRAINS
Whole grains such as oats, brown rice, quinoa, whole wheat, and barley are rich in vitamins and minerals
that help support reproductive function. They are slowly digested by your body, helping regulate blood sugar. They are also an excellent source of B vitamins, including B9, also known as folic acid. B9 is crucial to developing your baby's brain, spinal cord, and nervous system and preventing spina bifida.
GET YOUR DAILY DOSE OF VITAMIN D
Research suggests that vitamin D plays a crucial role in fertility, as receptors are found in the ovaries, placenta, endometrium, testicles, and sperm. While dietary sources of vitamin D include oily fish, egg yolks, fortified foods, and plant milk for those on plant-based diets, it is important to note that vitamin D is not easily obtained through our diet alone. Therefore, it is advised that everyone considers taking a daily ten-microgram vitamin D supplement, especially during autumn and winter when sunlight exposure is reduced. If you regularly use sun cream or cover your skin, consider taking a vitamin D supplement throughout the year. Maintaining adequate vitamin D levels has been linked to positive pregnancy outcomes in women undergoing assisted reproductive technology.
ADD IN ANTIOXIDANTS
Let me introduce you to the 'super foods' of the fertility nutrition world. Antioxidants are powerful compounds found in foods that protect our cells from oxidative stress caused by harmful molecules called free radicals. Antioxidant-rich foods include berries, pomegranates, green tea, dark chocolate, peppers and tomatoes. A lower dietary intake of antioxidants has been found to be associated with reduced sperm quality. Diets rich in antioxidants have been associated with greater pregnancy success in women.

IMPROVING communication
We are repeatedly told that communication is key. Whether with your children, your partner or your ex. Kate Donohue and Jamie-Lee Morgan share their top tips on improving communication with an ex.
Say what? “People may hear your words, but they feel your attitude.” John C Maxwell. We are repeatedly told that communication is key. Whether with your children, your partner or your ex. Communication may be key but what if the lock is broken?
SOME SUGGESTED GOALS THAT SEPARATING PARENTS SHOULD HAVE IN RELATION TO COMMUNICATION:
• Commit to supporting your children in having a free and uncomplicated relationship with the other parent.
• Keep whatever feelings you have about each other separate from your co-parenting relationship.
With children we need to be more present and leave our phones alone. With difficult exes our constant access to mobile phones can be deeply stressful. When you separate there is often already some level of mistrust, sadness, anger and frustration with the other person. Reducing the opportunity to antagonise each other, even accidently, is a good thing.
IMPROVE COMMUNICATION WITH AN EX:
1. Imagine someone else will read all the messages you send.
2. Imagine you are speaking to a colleague to neutralise the emotion and remain professional.
3. Focus on how you want your relationship to look like in the future, for example at your child’s wedding.
4. Write whatever you want but do not send that message. Delete it, breathe then start again.
5. Read the message before you send it and imagine how you would feel if you received it.
So when communication breaks down, what can you do? You can employ technology to help. OurFamilyWizard is an App for just this purpose. It monitors language, records messages including times messages were read and protects a party from abusive behaviour. A common issue between most couples is changing arrangements.
With the best will in the world, as children get older, school events and parties and friends etc. etc. affect your plans. Communicating what is happening when, especially if you have more than one child, can be stressful at the best of times. OurFamilyWizard has a colour coded shared calendar as well as an approval process you can use to assist with arrangements without direct contact.
Some parents only realise how they speak to each other and to their children when it is reflected back at them by their children. Sometimes with hilarious results. However, every interaction with a child, or that a child sees, is a form of communication. The words, the tone, the expressions and the physical contact. All of these things teach your children how to respond to others and how to build their own relationships.
Investing your energy in good communication techniques is an important way to help your children develop. So focus on the benefit to your children in maintaining good communication and not on your ex’s challenging behaviour.

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy
Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy, also known as 'the vampire facial', is now available with Chloe Taylor at Confidence Aesthetics
This summer, Confidence Aesthetics are bringing you PRP therapy – Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy. The treatment is also known as the "vampire facial" and has received so much attention that it may seem like we've finally found the fountain of youth.
PRP is a minimally invasive treatment using the patient's blood to stimulate cell growth and regeneration. The blood is drawn, processed in a centrifuge to extract the plasma, which is enriched with platelets and growth factors, and then it is injected into the scalp or facial skin. Orthopaedic surgeons use PRP to help athletes recover more quickly after an injury.
At Confidence Aesthetic, Chloe Taylor (Facial
Aesthetic Practitioner) provides PRP treatment for hair regeneration and as a preventative treatment for ageing skin.
PRP for hair is a treatment that helps to restore hair growth in individuals with hair loss or thinning. By injecting the PRP into the scalp, it promotes natural hair growth by stimulating stem cells and encouraging blood flow to the hair follicles. The growth factors in the plasma stimulate the hair follicle cells to promote new hair growth and repair damaged hair. PRP for hair is a safe and effective treatment. It suits people with early hair loss or thinning, hair loss due to stress, genetic factors, and alopecia.
PRP for the face is designed to boost your skin's natural healing process for a more youthful appearance. The plasma from the patient's blood is injected or micro-needled into the facial tissue, stimulating collagen production and cell renewal. This results in firmer, tighter, and smoother skin. It is also effective in reducing fine lines, wrinkles and improving the skin's overall texture.
PRP for the face can help to reverse the damage caused to the skin due to environmental factors, sun exposure, and unhealthy lifestyle choices. It is best suited for people with visible signs of ageing, such as fine lines and wrinkles, dull skin, age spots and pigmentation, and acne scars.
PRP THERAPY FOR AGEING SKIN
1. BLOOD DRAWN: You would have a small amount of blood (about 2 to 4 tablespoons) drawn from your arm.
2. BLOOD TAKEN TO LAB: The test tube containing your blood would be placed in a medical device called a centrifuge, which separates your blood into layers. One of these layers contains a high concentration of platelets.
3. BLOOD INJECTED: Facial Aesthetic Practitioner injects the blood that contains the high concentration of platelets into your face or scalp, using a syringe. Afterwards, the practitioner will use micro-needling to promote cell renewal.

Embrace the Magic of the Moon
Discover the joy of living in alignment with the rhythms of the universe and be amazed at the transformations it can bring to your life.
Words by Joelle WallserIn the fast-paced world we live in, it's easy to lose touch with our inner selves and the subtle energies that surround us. But what if we told you there's a way to tap into the magical forces of the universe, connect with the moon cycles, and create positive change in your life? Welcome to The Rising Signs, your gateway to holistic well-being and esoteric practices from right here in the heart of Jersey.
We believe in the profound connection between the moon and our lives. With its ethereal allure, the moon holds sway over our beings and the world around us. Understanding and aligning ourselves with the moon's ever-changing phases allows us to tap into its energy, manifest our desires, and release what no longer serves us. As the moon begins its celestial dance towards illumination, the new moon emerges as a gateway to new beginnings and manifestation. During this phase, the energy is ripe with potential, beckoning us to set intentions, visualize our dreams, and ignite the spark of creation. With focused intention and alignment, we can sow the seeds of our desires and watch as they blossom into reality.
When the moon reaches its zenith, bathing the world in its luminous glow, the full moon becomes a beacon of transformation and release. It is a time to let go of what no longer serves us, shed old patterns and beliefs, and purify our energetic essence. Engage in rituals of cleansing and renewal, be it through smudging, sacred herbs, or rituals and ceremonies. By embracing the power of release, we make space for new blessings to enter our lives and give our
intentions an extra boost of lunar energy - And if the moon can move oceans, we're confident it has scope with us.
In a world filled with distractions and constant demands, finding solace and reconnecting with our true selves becomes increasingly important. Whether you're continuing or starting out your journey of self-discovery, we're here to offer a helping hand to tap into the magic of moon cycles and much more. The Rising Signs extends beyond our physical presence, embracing the digital realm to reach and inspire as many energy-inquisitive individuals as possible. Our online platform is a hub of knowledge, inspiration, and connection. Delve into our articles, videos, and tips to deepen your understanding of esoteric energy, metaphysical practices, and self-care rituals. Join our growing community of like-minded individuals and tap into the collective wisdom we share locally and beyond.
To support you on your journey, each month, The Rising Signs explores the subtle energetic differences between each moon cycle, depending on its placement in the sky and its connection to the planets. Follow us on social media or sign up for our newsletter to receive our insightful overviews of the energy of each full and new moon as they arise. Gain deeper insights to work with the moon on a profound level.

FEEL YOUR BEST THIS SUMMER
Improve your mental and physical health with Chloe Bowler's Walking Workout.
Summer is finally here! It has been a long winter, and it is time to ditch the jumpers and spend more time outside. Fresh air is so good for mental and physical health, so the improving weather is a fantastic opportunity to socialise and exercise.
Exercise and socialising can go hand in hand. There are many team sports to enjoy, like hockey or tennis, and clubs for all sorts of activities, such as golf, running or even rock climbing, which can provide the perfect way to exercise and meet new people simultaneously.
If joining a club is not for you, grab a friend and go for a walk. It is the nicest way to spend an hour, and you can talk through your troubles as you get a full body workout, some sunshine and fresh air. The perfect combination for mental health as well as improving your physical fitness.
It is essential to ensure you eat nutritious food and drink plenty of water. It is easy to become dehydrated in warmer weather, so make sure to drink at least six glasses of water each day. Eating lots of vegetables with a high water content can also help, so include lots of courgettes in your diet to aid this.
WALKING WORKOUT
1. Walk at a brisk pace for 5 minutes.
2. Stop and do 20 slow squats. Keep your back straight and knees behind your toes as you squat down.
3. Walk at a brisk pace for 2 minutes.
4. Lunge walk for 40 paces, taking a big step into a lunge with your left leg and lowering down into a lunge, then lifting your right leg forward into a lunge position and repeat for 40.
5. Walk at a brisk pace for 2 minutes.
6. Tricep Dips. Find a bench or log, and place your hands on it with your feet out in front on the floor. Bending your elbows, slowly lower yourself to the ground, then push up, straightening your arms as you do. Repeat x 10.
7. Walk at a brisk pace for 2 minutes.
8. Step Ups. Find a bench or step and place your left foot up on it. Keep your left foot still, and lift your right leg up in front of your chest, back to the floor, and then back up your chest again. Repeat x 20, then swap legs for 20.
9. Walk at a brisk pace for 2 minutes.
10. Moving Front Plank. Go down into a front plank on your elbows and feet. Keep your body in a straight line and move your body forward and backwards without letting your body move up or down. Repeat for 10.
11. Walk at a brisk pace for 2 minutes.
12. Cycling. Lie on the floor and bring your knees and feet up into the air. Crunch up with your upper body and start cycling, reaching with your left elbow to your right knee whilst straightening your left leg, then straighten your right leg and reach with your right elbow to your left knee.
13. Walk at a brisk pace for 5 minutes.

We may all yearn for a Home, but this can be charged with political, social and economic realities. Histories and territorial borders fracture and shift, rules change, ecological and climate changes and mass migration can all impact on the intimate and incredibly fragile idea of what we call Home.
Curated by Rosalind Davis and Laura Hudson, No Place Like Home brings both existing and newly commissioned works by artists including Rachel Ara, George Bolster, Sasha Bowles, Justin Hibbs, Ana Cvorovic, Peter Liversidge, Lindsay Rutter, Will Romeril and Lisa Traxler.
SKIPTON BIG IDEAS: HUMAN CONNECTIONS
3 November - 17 December 2023
ArtHouse Jersey at Capital House + various surprise locations across the Island
Generously sponsored by long term supporters Skipton International, this year’s flagship exhibition explores the magic of human connection. The artists featured employ a range of different media to examine these connections; how we occupy spaces together, how we communicate both physically and emotionally and how we empathise with each other's lived experiences.
The artworks, many of which have an interactive element, will seek to draw out and augment these connections looking to engage and provide an opportunity in some cases for the public to actually see themselves represented within the artworks.
The exciting exhibition will take place in ArtHouse Jersey’s Capital House Gallery, the Tapestry Gallery of Jersey’s Maritime Museum and feature a travelling artwork which will make a pop up appearance in a number of cafés across St Helier, making this a truly accessible project promising to delight many an unsuspecting Islander.
Combining coffee, art and music
The Merchants, a community focused coffee shop gallery, is fast becoming the go-to space to hang out.
Born from a love of coffee, art and music, The Merchants is the brainchild of James Grant. Opening its doors in May 2022, the initial concept was to offer a relaxed place to hang out, enjoy good coffee and a space for local creatives to thrive.
When you walk through the doors at The Merchants, you'll first notice the vibrant array of artworks covering the walls. The art you see is all available to purchase, with collections rotating to showcase various pieces from well-renowned international artists and locally based artists. 'When I was growing
up, there wasn't the opportunity to exhibit in Jersey, and even now, unless you're already somewhat established. I want budding artists and musicians to have a platform to showcase their work and provide them with that steppingstone."
Instead of focusing on just coffee, or alcohol, The Merchants has established itself as a space in the middle. "Just around the corner, there's a couple of pubs, a cocktail bar and a wine bar, so we don't want to just focus on alcohol; however, if somebody wants to enjoy a beer whilst their friend sips on matcha, that's cool with us."
Every Saturday night, The Merchants is open until 9pm, where you can hang out, enjoy live music and sample their creative serves - including The Vodka Pip - a blend of Vodka, Pip Juice, Paprika and a secret ingredient!
The Merchants regularly hosts workshops and experiences, allowing islanders to hone in on their creativity. They've hosted poetry readings, VR film experiences, and songwriting workshops in the last couple of months. The Sketch Club has proved very popular and welcomes all abilities.
Not forgetting the kids, the back room is an early development space with the materials to create their masterpieces, including stacks of paper and a giant blackboard wall.
The Merchants has just celebrated its first birthday, but is James happy with what he has achieved so far? "Experiencing speciality coffee shops and galleries across Europe, I had a clear picture of what I wanted the space to be, but with Jersey being such a beautiful and unique place, I was surprised at how that vision has gone. The space is evolving and feeding off what people want, and it's created something so much more enjoyable than I could have imagined."
