Pablo Felices-Luna We are thrilled to start 2019 with the premiere of a brand new play and a reimagined classic. The process of bringing a new play to production is complicated and exciting. Over the course of two years, the three playwrights for Torn Through Time have turned an idea into a story, into words, action, and now finally, into a play to be performed for you. At first, new works are unknown to both the artists who create them and the audiences who will experience them.

This can be scary, but the result is well worth the journey.

On the other hand, when you take a classic like Romeo and Juliet, you are building on the comfort of a known story. You are creating a new execution of it, or, as is the case with DynamO’s version, using it to challenge some of our foregone conclusions about that iconic tale.

And while only Torn Through Time involves time travel, both plays look to the past to set a path forward. In Torn, Jess searches the past for inspiration for herself in the present day. In What If Romeo & Juliet… the classic tale is dissected to help us answer some of the questions we are wrestling with here and now.

I guess we do like matching and juxtaposing our offerings at MTYP… Nous sommes ravis de commencer l’année 2019 avec le lancement d’une toute nouvelle pièce et d’un classique revisité. Le processus consistant à amener une nouvelle pièce au stade de la production est complexe tout en étant stimulant. Sur une période de deux ans, les trois dramaturges de Torn Through Time ont transformé une idée en histoire, en mots, en action et enfin, en pièce qui vous sera présentée. D’un côté, les nouvelles œuvres ne sont connues ni des artistes qui leur donnent vie, ni du public qui les découvrira. Cela peut être angoissant, mais le résultat en vaut bien la peine.

D’un autre côté, lorsqu’on prend un classique comme Roméo et Juliette, on opte pour le confort que procure une histoire connue. Soit on en fait une nouvelle adaptation, soit, comme dans le cas de la version de DynamO, on s’en sert pour contester certains dénouements inévitables de ce célèbre conte.

Alors que seule Torn Through Time englobe la notion de voyage dans le temps, les deux pièces puisent dans le passé pour tracer la voie à suivre. Dans Torn Through Time, Jess explore le passé à la recherche d’une inspiration pour le présent, et dans Et si Roméo et Juliette…, le conte classique est disséqué pour nous aider à répondre à certaines des questions avec lesquelles nous sommes aux prises ici et maintenant.

Thanadelthur. Rose Fortune. Helen Harrison. Each of these Canadian heroes were real people who accomplished amazing things. But have you heard of them?

I hadn’t, until I started working on Torn Through Time. Each of these trailblazers are true Canadian heroes, making a great impact on Canada in their own way, and we should know about them, but still they remain relatively unknown.

That’s a situation that Carrie Costello, Frances Koncan and Cherissa Richards wanted to rectify when they set out to write about lesser-known Canadian heroes. But instead of putting a history lesson onstage (which is seldom all that interesting), the writers decided to look at what these three trailblazers were like as children — before they discovered their heroic potential. How did they think about themselves? What skills did they have but hadn’t yet discovered? What barriers did they need to overcome? How did they handle the challenges they encountered? And, by showing these unique, spunky, and still relatively ‘unheroic’ kids, maybe children in the audience (like Jess) can begin to recognize that they too have qualities within them that, if harnessed, could change the world.

I’d like to thank Carrie, Frances and Cherissa for giving me the opportunity to be a part of telling the story of three young women who grow into such inspiring and heroic Canadians. Thank you to the actors who were involved in workshops of the script over the past couple of years. Thank you to the designers and the wonderful team at Manitoba Theatre for Young People who work so hard to make magical theatre for young audiences. A huge thank you to the cast you see today, whose creativity added so much to putting our production on its feet. Thank you to Pablo whose commitment to developing new Canadian plays for young audiences has resulted in the premiere you are seeing today. And thank you, for supporting this gem of a company. You are all heroes in my books!

THANA, HELEN & ROSE: HISTORICAL HEROES In Torn Through Time, Jess summons Thanadelthur, Helen Harrison and Rose Fortune out of the pages of a book as their 10-year-old selves. These three important but relatively unknown women were real historical trailblazers.

We asked the three playwrights to tell us something that inspired or excited them about these heroic women. Here’s what they had to say: Frances Koncan on Thanadelthur: “I was really intrigued by Thanadelthur’s ability to navigate between multiple cultures and multiple worlds during a time of tremendous cultural upheaval, industrialization, and increasing globalization. Her community and traditional teachings provided her with an enormous and inspiring power to stay afloat and push forward as the world changed around her. That’s something all my favourite people — fictional and real — have in common: being able to adapt. I’m terrible at it myself, and admire that quality hugely in others!”

Carrie Costello on Helen Harrison: “I am fascinated by her determination to do what she loved, flying. And fun fact, during the war, she had a little blue book.

Because the women who flew in the ATA [Air Transport Auxiliary] changed the type of planes they flew frequently they kept their blue book with them. This contained about 100 cards, one for each aircraft with information on how to fly it.

Because time was of the essence, these pilots would take off and then while the plane was in the air, they would start reading up on how to land the thing!”

Cherissa Richards on Rose Fortune: “What inspired me the most about Rose Fortune is how much of an entrepreneur she was. She was a self made woman who hustled hard to make her way in this world from a slave in the States, to a business woman, and then the first black female police officer in Canada in a time where that seemed like a near impossibility!”

BIOS • ARTIST BIOS PLAYWRIGHT CARRIE COSTELLO • Carrie loves adapting stories into theatre for young audiences. She is inspired by a book or a historical event and she begins figuring out the theatrical way in. She has adapted seven children’s books into plays for various ages, including The Paper Bag Princess, The Velveteen Rabbit, The Snail and the Whale, and There’s a Mouse in My House.

The latter was produced by Carousel Players in 2009 and toured Niagara schools.

In 2010 the play was remounted and brought to Young People's Theatre and Theatre Direct in Toronto. Carrie’s next play, Water Under the Bridge was her first historically inspired work, which she co-wrote with Michaela Washburn. Each of the two writers researched the history and lives of a people. They used that information to bring the two main characters to life. This process created a depth and individuality to each journey that was unique and rang true to members of many different communities. Water Under the Bridge was produced in 2012 and toured for 2 years throughout Southern Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan.

Carrie has a BFA in theatre from the University of Victoria.

PLAYWRIGHT FRANCES KONCAN • Frances Koncan is a writer and director of mixed Anishinaabe and Slovene descent. A 2014 graduate of the City University of New York Brooklyn College’s MFA Playwriting program, she has been writing plays for 6 years now and is ready to transition from broke emerging playwright to broke established playwright! Plays include: Women of the Fur Trade (Winner: Toronto Fringe Best New Play Contest), Riot Resist Revolt Repeat, zahgidiwin/love (Winner: Harry Rintoul Award for Best New Manitoba Play), How to Talk to Human Beings, Little Red (Winner: Himan Brown Playwriting Award), The Dance-off of Conscious Uncoupling (Shortlisted: Tom Hendry Award). Next up: writing and directing Hedda, Reimagined and Assistant Directing A Doll’s House Part 2 at IbsenFest, and writing and directing Trendsettlers at Winnipeg Fringe. She is the Artistic Director of Vault Projects, a Winnipeg-based performance company focused on decolonizing theatrical practices and developing new protocols that hold space for under-represented perspectives. She is an advocate for marginalized voices, for Keanu Reeves’ underrated acting ability, and for the misunderstood genius of David Lynch’s Dune. This has been an incredible, whirlwind learning experience and Cherissa is so excited to have had the chance to work with such an incredible team all along the journey! Here’s to many more!

Cherissa’s year has been filled with theatre and movie making; from acting in shows at MTYP and RMTC, directing with Sarasvàti Theatre, Vancouver’s Bard on the Beach and a few Hallmark movies shot in between. You can catch Cherissa as Mayme in Winnipeg Jewish Theatre's (WJT) Intimate Apparel from February 2-10, and then she’s off to the Shaw Festival for the Apprentice Director program for their 2019 season.

DIRECTOR ANN HODGES • Ann is a Winnipeg-based director who directs plays, musicals and operas across Canada. For MTYP, Ann recently directed Danny, King of the Basement and Jabber.

COMPOSER MARIE-JOSÉE DANDENEAU • MJ Dandeneau is of Anishinaabe/Métis ancestry, born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in a French-speaking family. Over the past 14 years, MJ has created a multi-faceted and diverse musical career that includes Professional Touring & Recording Bassist, Composer, Booking Agent and Producer. Her tours and studio work have literally taken her all over the globe and she has been nationally recognized with awards including a Canadian JUNO, WCMA Award and CFM Award. Her unique style of bass playing and versatility have given her the opportunity to tour and play with international musicians such as Buffy Saint-Marie, The Violent Femmes, Xavier Rudd, The Good Lovelies, Pete Murray, Leela Gilday, Don Amero, Sierra Noble and Rose Cousins, just to name a few. MJ made her theatre debut in RMTC’s production of the musical Bitter Girls and then went on to play Frieda in MTYP's production of the musical A Charlie Brown Double Bill. She has been composing for the last five years for the National Film Board and various projects along the way. Dandeneau is very excited and honoured to be part of this production.

LIGHTING DESIGNER DEAN COWIESON • Dean is happy to light the world premiere production of Torn Through Time. Dean has performed as the resident lighting designer for both Théâtre Cercle Molière and Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers beginning in 2005 and 2006 respectively. Dean has had the opportunity to design lighting for various companies in Winnipeg as well as in Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa among other cities. In addition, Dean has designed sets for RMTC, PTE and Théâtre Cercle Molière. Previous lighting designs for MTYP has included The Big League, The Power of Harriet T and Routes. Enjoy the show.

ROSE REENA JOLLY • As a fifth year arts student at the University of Manitoba, Reena has been keeping herself very busy with theatre. She has been involved in several projects within the Winnipeg theatre community. From August to December of 2018, she had the privilege of leading Sarasvati Productions' forum theatre touring show titled Home 2.0. Although touring is always challenging, Reena is excited and ready to be on tour again with MTYP. Playing the character of Rose Fortune, she gets to bring to the stage an important portrayal of the first black police woman in North America. Reena feels very blessed to be surrounded by such talented and inspiring performers. When she is not saving the world one smile at a time, Reena enjoys hanging out with her family, singing in the shower and being a proud mother to her cat, Juicebox.

THANA KATHLEEN MACLEAN • Kathleen is a Métis artist from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. A fresh graduate from the National Theatre School of Canada (NTS), this is Kathleen’s first full production post school and she is so excited to be here. Recent credits include working with Weesageechak Begins to Dance at Native Earth Performing Arts in Toronto, Mrs. Peachum in Threepenny Opera and Moretta in The Rover both at NTS. JESS HERA NALAM • Fresh graduate of the University of Winnipeg Theatre Honours Program, Hera Nalam is extremely excited to be part of MTYP for the very first time! She was last seen on the stage in Shakespeare in the Ruins' (SIR) production of Timon of Athens, and the University of Winnipeg’s productions of Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead, Concord Floral and Time & The Conways. Also an aspiring singer-songwriter, Hera has successfully written and recorded her original music, which are all available on soundcloud.com.

HELEN ALISSA WATSON • Alissa is a Winnipeg born artist and educator whose passions include physical comedy and “clowning around”. She is the co-founder of The Red Nose Diaries (Maple & Sticky’s Amazing Olympic Race and The Polka Dots of Death: The Making of a Supervillain) and is a proud founding member of Winnipeg’s only all-female Bouffon Ensemble, The Talentless Lumps. Alissa holds a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Education from Brandon University and has studied theatre at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama in England, The Manitoulin Conservatory for Creation and Performance, and is an alumna of the Professional Training Ensemble at Prairie Theatre Exchange (PTE@PTE). The 2015 Recipient of the Reg Skene Award for Emerging Theatre Artist, she is also the percussionist for the sweet and cheeky, Fu Fu Chi Chi Choir. Recent stage credits include: Dib & Dob and the Journey Home, Night Light (MTYP); Sense & Sensibility (RMTC); Mission Munschpossible, Magical Mystery Munsch (PTE); Stripped Down Midsummer Night’s Dream (SIR). What if Romeo & Juliet ...

For several years now, I had dreamed of adapting the masterpiece of William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet, through a creative process that favours acrobatic movement. I also wanted to offer young spectators access to the universe of this great author.

So I invited Shakespeare to have tea. We talked about his play, its content, the characters and especially about Tybalt. We also discussed the repressed anger, the buried frustrations that are almost forgotten, but that are always unexpectedly revived. It was also about the elegance of words, the beauty of the narrative, the juxtaposition of romance and fighting, love and hatred.

Et si Roméo & Juliette…

Depuis plusieurs années déjà, je rêvais d’adapter le chef d’œuvre de William Shakespeare, Roméo et Juliette, via un processus de création qui privilégie le mouvement acrobatique. J’aspirais aussi à offrir aux jeunes spectateurs un accès à l’univers de ce grand auteur.

J’ai donc invité Shakespeare à prendre le thé. Nous avons parlé de sa pièce, de son contenu, des personnages et surtout de Tybalt. Nous avons discuté aussi des colères refoulées, des frustrations enfouies presque oubliées, mais qui toujours se ravivent inopinément. She has also been involved in various writing workshops since 2006. She directed workshops at the National Theatre School of Canada and Cirque du Soleil and has been teaching clowning at Cégep Lionel-Groulx College since 2004. She is a founding member of DynamO Théâtre and its co-Artistic Director since 1989. She was a performer, an acrobat and a writer in all of the company’s productions. She directed Lili and Ghosts and Ladders and also wrote and directed Thrice upon a time… , Misstart, a production for stage clowns, The big bad wolf, Inner Migrant and What if Romeo & Juliet…. She is actively involved in the Documents of poverty and hope project that brought together six companies from five countries. PERFORMER / INTERPRÉTATION ROSALIE DELL’ANIELLO • Rosalie Dell’Aniello graduated from the Option-Théâtre acting school of the Collège Lionel-Groulx College. She was featured in À la prochaine chicane! a masked summer 2017 touring production. She also cofounded the Home Run festival, an artistic event performed in Villeray neighborhood apartments and the Théâtre du Portage Company. In 2017, she worked with the Flamant collective, a production and web marketing platform for artists exploring movement.

Rosalie Dell’Aniello est diplômée de l’Option-Théâtre du Collège Lionel-Groulx en interprétation. On a pu la voir dans À la prochaine chicane ! spectacle de jeu masqué en tournée à l’été 2017. Elle a aussi cofondé le festival Home Run, événement artistique qui se déroule dans les appartements de Villeray ainsi que la compagnie le Théâtre du Portage. PERFORMER / INTERPRÉTATION MARIE FANNIE GUAY • Both an actress and a creator, Marie Fannie stands out for her sparkling and radiant energy. Since graduating from the UQÀM University École supérieure de théâtre theatre program in 2015, she has been involved in projects appealing to her areas of interest, i.e. physical theatre, feminist playwriting and creating.

As a physical-theatre performer, she has been featured in Crossing over (directed by Laurence C-Emery and Anne Sabourin, Zone Homa, 2015) and more recently in Visage de feu, produced by the up-and-coming Territoire 80 Company and presented at Théâtre Prospero space in 2017. She will also be part of the new Théâtre I.N.K. production directed by Marilyn Perreault. In 2016, she was cast in Lieu(x) possibles, a feminist dramatic poem by Marie-Claude Garneau. In addition, she is interested in creative endeavors and directed her first project with the Dans un FOOD COURT production co-created with Solo Fugère and presented at UQÀM University in 2015

and later at Espace La Risée space in 2017. On screen, she was cast in two short films both directed by Anne-Marie Denault: Pasty and Les Filles du Roy. With experiences both as a gymnast and a contemporary dancer, she developed a strong interest in movement theatre during her years at the École internationale de théâtre Jacques Lecoq theatre school in Paris and with DynamO Théâtre, with which she continues to explore physical acting and clowning.

PERFORMER / INTERPRÉTATION MARC-ANDRÉ POLIQUIN • Marc-André Poliquin is a multi-talented graduate of the Cégep de Saint-Hyacinthe Theatre School. He was cast as the Corporal in The Caucasian Chalk Circle at Théâtre Prospero and Theo Sarapo in Piaf (Rougemont Theatre production). He joined the Secours Rires organization in 2011, flew to Haiti and took part in a clown production raising awareness on cholera: Klou Tribò Babò Kont Kolera. For the past nine years he has been broadening his abilities as a physical actor and dancer by training with various teachers. With DynamO Théâtre he played Jack in Ghosts and Ladders for the 2013 European tour and began the year touring Jackie Gosselin’s most recent work, What if Romeo & Juliet… He was also featured in a number of choreographies, including Les Installations mouvantes by Mandoline Hybride and Duels (at Agora de la danse space) by Cas Public. He was cast in Symphonie Dramatique and more recently he took on the character of Narcisse in Noyade(S) by Samsara Theatre Company and M. PERFORMER / INTERPRÉTATION RÉMY SAVARD • Rémy Savard did competitive gymnastics at an early age. He also had a passion for performing aside from his love of acrobatics. At 12 years old, he had to make the difficult decision of dropping gymnastics and focusing on his theatre career while promising himself to one day combine the two. During his years at the professional acting school of Collège Lionel-Groulx, he discovered DynamO Théâtre through clowning teacher Jackie Gosselin, co-Artistic Director and a founding member of the company. A few years after graduating and taking advantage of the physical-actor training program offered by the company, he finally made his dream come true by combining acting and acrobatics thanks to a chance of substituting in I on the sky.

He was delighted to join the cast of What if Romeo & Juliet… in the fall of 2017, which proved to be a great opportunity to keep doing the two things he loves the most.

Gymnaste de compétition durant son enfance, Rémy nourrissait déjà une passion pour le jeu parallèlement à son amour pour l’acrobatie. C’est au jeune âge de douze ans qu’il doit prendre la déchirante décision d’abandonner sa pratique acrobatique pour se concentrer sur son choix de carrière, le théâtre, se promettant d’arriver un jour à concilier les deux. Durant ses études à l’école de théâtre professionnel du Collège Lionel-Groulx, il découvre la compagnie DynamO Théâtre par le biais de son enseignante de jeu clownesque, Jackie Gosselin, co-directrice artistique et membre fondatrice de la compagnie. Quelques années à peine après sa sortie de l’école, profitant du programme de perfectionnement de l’acteur physique de DynamO Théâtre, il réalise enfin son rêve de réunir jeu et acrobatie grâce à un

SHAKESPEARE’S VOICE CHRISTOPHER GAZE • Christopher is best known as the Founding Artistic Director of Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival. He hosts the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s ever popular Tea & Trumpets series and has hosted their annual traditional Christmas concerts for 26 years.

Christopher plays a leading role in British Columbia as an advocate for the arts in general, and his passionate dedication to Bard on the Beach has fueled its growth into one of the largest Shakespeare Festivals in North America, drawing more than 1.8 million patrons since its inception in 1990. His many honours include Canada’s Meritorious Service Medal, Honorary Doctorates from UBC & SFU, the Mayor’s Arts Award for Theatre and the Order of British Columbia.

Christopher est surtout connu en tant que directeur artistique fondateur du Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival. Il est l’hôte de la très populaire série Tea & Trumpets de l’Orchestre symphonique de Vancouver, dont il organise chaque année, depuis 26 ans, les traditionnels spectacles de Noël. TOUR AND STAGE MANAGER / DIRECTION DE TOURNÉE ET RÉGIE MARIE-CHANTAL BONIN • Marie-Chantal Bonin graduated from Collège Lionel-Groulx in management and stage technique in 2017. She was in charge of the theatrical productions with the students of Théâtre Côte à Côte from 2012 to 2014, and then worked with the troupe Les Farfelus in 2015 for which she was the Assistant Director and Stage Manager.

In the summer of 2017, she was in charge of Technical Coordination at the Théâtre du 450, and did the lighting design and technical direction of the show Salut Claude! created with the Théâtre Omnivore. This show, a tribute to Claude Léveillée, continued on next page

TECHNICIAN / TECHNICIEN PHILIPPE SAUCIER • Philippe graduated in May 2016 from the National Theatre School of Canada in production. Since then, he has held the positions of stage manager, technical director, light and sound designer and sound manager for many companies namely Espace La Risée theatre and the collective Les Belles. Since 2016, he has worked as a technician for the Just for Laughs Festival, at the National Monument and the Théâtre Quat’sous, Tangente and Agora de la danse.

Philippe obtient son diplôme en production de l’École nationale de théâtre du Canada en mai 2016. Par la suite, il occupe les postes de régisseur plateau, de directeur technique, de concepteur lumière et son et d’ingénieur du son pour de nombreuses compagnies de théâtre, notamment l’Espace La Risée et le collectif Les Belles Bêtes. Depuis 2016, il travaille comme technicien pour le Festival Juste pour rire au Monument-National, ainsi que pour le Théâtre de Quat’sous, le Théâtre la Tangente et l’Agora de la danse.
