ALL WE CAN BE artistic director

Pablo Felices-Luna

There is a line towards the end of A Year with Frog and Toad that captures one of the core themes of the season. To wildly paraphrase: “Some things change, and that is good. Other things don’t, and that is also good.” It’s good for the soul to know that Frog and Toad will always remain friends, or that Peter Pan will never grow up. But change is also good; life is change and we need to learn how to process it and adjust to it. I worked with playwright Jennifer Overton on the premiere production of Spelling 2-5-5 in 2011. Back then, Jenn was breaking ground with a play for young people that built understanding and appreciation for a neurodivergent character. The play remains relevant today, but in less than a decade, the conversation around voice and inclusion has shifted. Autistic self-advocates have rebranded Autism Awareness month as Autism Acceptance month for instance. So, how do we change? How do we adapt? Our answer thus far has been to bring more representative voices to the table. Having said that, one of the things I love the most about our work is the insight we get from our audiences, the wisdom that is shared candidly in the moment. I am really looking forward to making more discoveries about change and permanence with you and your students this year.

Created by award-winning dance artist Santee Smith, The Mush Hole is a powerful and timely performance that uses song, dance and theatre to explore the lives and spirits of children who were forced to attend Ontario’s Mohawk Institute residential school. The poor quality of the food served to students led to the school’s nickname, The Mush Hole. The Mohawk Institute Residential School was operated by the Anglican Church of Canada and the Government of Canada from 1885 to 1970.
