Pablo Felices-Luna A while ago, I was trying to explain to my daughter why certain song covers felt uninteresting to me, because I want to hear something new in that familiar tune. But I also know that for some of us, any significant change in the arrangement of the song feels strange, unfamiliar, wrong. Why am I talking about songs and covers, you ask? Well, The Very Hungry Caterpillar & Other Eric Carle Favourites is a very faithful adaptation of three beloved stories. If you listen carefully, you can almost hear the pages turning underneath Gordon Pinsent or Jean-François Casabonne’s beautiful readings. On the other hand, Rick Miller and Craig Francis’ adaptation of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea uses modern technologies and current environmental concerns to open up the story for us here and now. So, really, how do you like your stage adaptations? Il y a quelque temps, j’essayais d’expliquer à ma fille pourquoi certaines reprises de chansons ne m’intéressaient pas, car je voulais entendre quelque chose de nouveau dans cet air familier. Mais je sais aussi que pour certains d’entre nous, tout changement significatif dans l’arrangement d’une chanson semble étrange, inconnu et faux. Vous vous demandez pourquoi je vous parle de chansons et de reprises? Eh bien, La chenille qui fait des trous et autres trésors d’Eric Carle est une adaptation très fidèle de trois histoires tant aimées. Si vous écoutez attentivement, vous pouvez presque entendre les pages tourner sous les magnifiques narrations de Gordon Pinsent ou Jean-François Casabonne. Par ailleurs, l’adaptation de Vingt mille lieues sous les mers par Rick Miller et Craig Francis s’appuie sur des technologies modernes et des préoccupations environnementales actuelles pour nous présenter l’histoire ici et maintenant. Jim Morrow I’ve loved the books written by Eric Carle since first reading them to my four children when they were very young. Eric is perhaps the best at capturing complex ideas simply through the elegant use of language and exquisite illustrations. As a result, his books are quite magical and full of possibility. He has an extraordinary ability to connect with children as young as two years old, feeding their imagination as they interact with the iconic characters that appear on the pages of his many books. All of the plays produced at Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia take their inspiration from existing children’s storybooks and incorporate elements of puppetry, object movement, recorded narration, and original music. We strive to make our shows detailed, elegant adaptations that honour the author’s original intent and provide a gentle theatrical experience for children who are often coming to the theatre for the very first time. My favourite moment is watching young children enter the theatre clutching their favourite books to see their favourite characters come to life on stage. Once inside and seated, the show’s gentle pace allows the mind of the child to interact appropriately with the action onstage, and puppets are used to heighten the playfulness of the storytelling. Although children respond positively to the bright colours, the playful action, the recognizable characters and imagery, and the beautiful music, mostly they are happy simply to be with friends and family, in the theatre, to laugh and shout and be entertained, and, for some, perhaps to be inspired.
J’ai beaucoup aimé les livres d’Eric Carle dès que j’ai commencé à les lire à mes quatre enfants quand ils étaient très jeunes. Eric est sans doute le meilleur à s’emparer d’idées complexes simplement par l'utilisation élégante du langage et d’illustrations exquises. En conséquence, ses livres sont tout à fait magiques et pleins de possibilités. Il a une capacité extraordinaire d’établir la communication avec les enfants, et ce, dès l’âge de deux ans, nourrissant leur imagination lorsqu'ils interagissent avec les personnages emblématiques qui apparaissent sur les pages de ses nombreux livres. Toutes les pièces de théâtre produites au Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia s’inspirent de réels livres d’histoires pour enfants et incorporent des éléments tels que marionnettes, mouvements d’objets, narration enregistrée et musique originale. ABOUT THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR & OTHER ERIC CARLE FAVOURITES Mermaid’s compilations of five Eric Carle stories have generated remarkable statistics and earned considerable praise from audiences on several continents. In 2014, the production celebrated its fifteenth year of continuous touring and welcomed its two millionth spectator. Featuring innovative black-light puppetry and evocative original music, the fifty-minute production includes three beloved stories: The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Little Cloud and The Mixed-Up Chameleon. Born in Syracuse, NY, he spent his youth in Germany where he studied fine art in Stuttgart prior to returning to the US in 1952 to work as a graphic designer for The New York Times and later as art director of an international advertising agency. His delightful books, which combine stunning collage artwork with an imaginative approach to learning, have sold more than 110 million copies worldwide. In 2002, The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art opened to the public in Amherst, MA. ERIC CARLE STORIES CREATE ONSTAGE MAGIC If you’ve ever read an Eric Carle story to your children or grandchildren, you will already know how delightful these tales are. The Very Hungry Caterpillar & Other Eric Carle Favourites features three of Eric Carle’s favourite stories performed with black light puppetry. Here’s a little background on each book: Eric Carle's trademark collages will make every reader want to run outside and discover their very own little cloud. In Little Cloud, the clouds drift across the bright blue sky – all except one. Little Cloud trails behind. He is busy changing shapes to become a fluffy sheep, a zooming airplane, and even a clown with a funny hat. The Mixed-Up Chameleon has a pretty boring life, always sitting about predictably changing colour. One day it discovers it can change not only its colour but its shape and size too. When he sees the wonderful animals in the zoo, he immediately wants to be like them — and ends up like all of them at once — with hilarious results. In Eric Carle's classic story, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, the author tells the story of a hungry little caterpillar's nosh through an amazing variety of foods. The caterpillar nibbles through apples, strawberries, chocolate cake, a slice of Swiss cheese, salami, a pickle, a lollipop and a whole lot more. Full at last, he creates a cocoon around himself, goes to sleep, and wakes up a few weeks later transformed into a butterfly! MTYP hopes you enjoy Mermaid’s production of these three magical tales and that they open the door to discovering more stories to read to your children and grandchildren.

In recent years, he has been involved with the Théâtre Denise-Pelletier in l’Orangeraie and l’Avare, the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde (TNM) in Roméo et Juliette, L’histoire du roi Lear and Christine, la reine-garçon, as well as with the Théâtre Jean Duceppe in Oslo and Le Diable rouge, and with Espace GO in Projet Andomaque (three productions by Serge Denoncourt), and Vie pour deux. He also appeared at the Théâtre du Rideau Vert in Le repas des fauves, as well as in Vassa Geleznova and Marie Stuart, two productions by Alexandre Marine. At the Théâtre de l’Opsis, he has taken part in the cast of several plays in the Tchekhov cycle, namely Je suis une mouette (non, ce n’est pas ça), (Oncle) Vania and La Cerisaie, and in the American cycle, that is Under Construction and Réveillez-vous et chantez! In 2019, he will partake in Coriolan (TNM), La Société des poètes disparus (Théâtre Denise-Pelletier) and Strindberg (Espace Go). The Cole Harbour native was first initiated in the #theatrelife in grade 11 when he played Roberto in Auburn Drive High School’s dinner theatre Santa Baby (2009). From there he went on to continue his love affair with theatre by attending The Fountain School of Performing Arts, where he performed in such shows as: The Good Soul of Szechuan (2014), The Birds (2014), Our Country’s Good (2014), and The Seagull (2015). His most recent production was also with Mermaid Theatre, when they toured to China with The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Eric Carle Favourites (2018). Ben would like to thank the entire creative team at Mermaid for being an absolute dream to work with and hopes everyone enjoys the show! Ben est enchanté de rejoindre le Mermaid Theatre à l’occasion de cette tournée nordaméricaine. CREATORS' NOTES I read Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea as a teenager in Montreal, and like so many kids before and since, I became hooked by Jules Verne’s extraordinary imagination. When Craig Francis and I talked about creating far-reaching new shows that cross barriers between media, cultures and languages, this classic sci-fi novel seemed a perfect fit. My work and my life have always informed each other, like intertwining strands of DNA. As a father of two children, I’m intensely driven to create entertainment that enlightens, educates, and empowers young people. Our daughters are hearing more and more about water issues and conflicts as they grow older, so anything we can do to raise awareness becomes a top priority. Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea was created out of this impulse, and we hope that our play and outreach will contribute to a necessary global discussion. Thanks for diving into the maelstrom with us. We hope to see you on the other side, with bright eyes, a big smile and a renewed sense of connectivity. co-creator/director

I remember being engrossed by Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea – not only was it a great adventure story, it was Science Fiction on the cutting-edge. Okay, the Victorian cutting-edge, but still. Jules Verne's excitement at the latest scientific discoveries is palpable. Discovery through visual storytelling is what drives me to create works that help us connect with each other, our environment, and ourselves. Or maybe that's one definition of art? I hope you will enjoy our Captain Nemo, as he comes to life onstage, and continues his animated machinations online, through his Nautilus Leaks and our animated series with Jerry, Billy, Ethan, and other New Atlanteans. This is the greatest thing about archetypal characters like Nemo, they only expand; they take on meanings, absorb the world around them, and generate stories. They never stop moving. ABOUT THE SHOW Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea is the theatrical adaptation of the classic undersea adventure. Here you’ll meet Jules — named after Jules Verne — a multimedia artist. He tells about when he was a graduate student, stuck in a maelstrom of despair over the state of the oceans. He escapes into his favourite story, in which his idol, Captain Nemo, has cut himself off of all humanity and civilization. But such isolation comes at a cost, as Jules discovers. Now, after his adventure, he’s fueled by a new hope, and using his storytelling skills to help us feel the same way. One theme of the show is connection: do we use our talent and our tools to connect, or to disconnect? Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea was developed in association with The 20K Collective and was commissioned by PANAMANIA, the Arts and Culture Festival of the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, presented by CIBC. A series of workshops took place between 2012 and 2015 at Young People’s Theatre in Toronto, Manitoba Theatre for Young People in Winnipeg, Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto, and Ex Machina’s La Caserne in Quebec City. The show premiered in 2015 for five performances at Ada Slaight Hall in Daniel’s Spectrum, Toronto, as part of PANAMANIA. It has since gone on to a run Off-Broadway at The New Victory Theater in New York, and presentations from coast to coast to coast.

Their hope is to empower young people to work together to protect the earth and become New Atlantians. New Atlantians try to find solutions to our water problems, and fight for our blue planet. Two Canadian scientists have a couple ideas of what YOU can do to help!
Dr. Imogen Coe, dean of science at ryerson university: “Everybody can learn more about water, and how to conserve it, and how to use it properly, and how to keep it clean. I think kids can really help to teach their parents. I think they can work in their communities. They can look after their own little watersheds, they can find out where their streams are coming from and where they’re going. And they can just get really engaged with the environment and try and find ways to help make it a healthy environment for everybody.”
Dr. Eva Pip, professor of toxicology and water quality at the university of winnipeg: “We need young idealism to take us back to some measure of hope. Without hope there is no possible chance even. BIOS • ARTIST BIOS CO-CREATOR/DIRECTOR RICK MILLER • Rick is a Dora and Gemini award-winning writer/director/actor/musician/educator who has performed in five languages on five continents and who Entertainment Weekly called “one of the 100 most creative people alive today”. He has created and toured solo shows such as the hit sensation BOOM, MacHomer, and (w. Daniel Brooks) Bigger Than Jesus and HARDSELL. With Robert Lepage, he has collaborated on Geometry of Miracles, Zulu Time, Lipsynch, and on the film Possible Worlds. As the artistic director of WYRD Productions and co-creative director of the Kidoons Network, Rick has most recently developed BOOM and BOOM X, and (w. Craig Francis) Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea, GAME of CLONES, Jungle Book, and (w. Craig Francis and Paul Van Dyck) Frankenstein; as well as animated series that educate, enlighten, empower and entertain young people. He often teaches an interdisciplinary class at the University of Toronto called The Architecture of Creativity. Rick is from Montreal, and lives in Toronto with his wife Stephanie Baptist and their two daughters. CO-CREATOR / STAGE MANAGER CRAIG FRANCIS • Craig is a writer, illustrator, performer, and multi-disciplinary creator, whose works are enjoyed by millions of people worldwide. A founding member of the 20K Collective, he is the co-author and co-director with Rick Miller on the productions Jungle Book and GAME of CLONES, as well as their Stage Manager. He's also the co-author and Stage Manager of the stage adaptation of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea (directed by Miller), and a producer, designer, and Stage Manager for Miller's solo productions BOOM and BOOM X. Craig is co-creating reimagined adaptations of Frankenstein (with Rick Miller and Paul Van Dyck), Wizard of Oz, Rose Red, and an Animazia animated series. Craig illustrates the cartoon characters for the Kidoons Network videos (as well as writing and voicing them), which are on display at museums in four provinces, with millions of views. Craig performed TheatreSports and improv comedy internationally for 12 years; stage credits include The Refugee Hotel (Teesri Duniya/Segal Centre). He lives in Montreal, where he has illustrated several books, and been a commentator on radio and TV. continued on next page

BIOS • ARTIST BIOS CAPTAIN NEMO RICHARD CLARKIN • Richard has been an established presence on Canadian stages and screens for thirty years. Recently he starred as John A. MacDonald in the Confederation plays for VideoCab at Soulpepper, for which he received a Best Actor Dora nomination. For Mirvish Productions he starred as Scar in The Lion King, Biff in Death of a Salesman and appeared in The Heart of Robin Hood. Richard originated the role of Jacob Mercer in David French’s Salt-Water Moon and has performed in numerous productions for Toronto’s most innovative theatre companies including the Company Theatre and Necessary Angel. Richard is a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada and a co-founder of the landmark theatre group Primus. He has performed across Canada, especially in Winnipeg for RMTC, PTE and MTYP. He recently starred in the film adaptation of The Drawer Boy, for which he received a Best Actor ACTRA Award nomination. Richard is best known onscreen as Gord Ogilvey from the Goon hockey films. He appears regularly in Murdoch Mysteries as Chief Inspector Davis. PROFESSOR ARONNAX KATIE MELBY • Katie is a bi-coastal theatre and puppetry artist originally haling from South Dakota. She is co-Artistic Director of 3 Sticks, a physical theatre company dedicated to making new work, that she co-founded after graduating from the Lecoq-based London International School of Performing Arts in 2005. Their work has been presented across the US, Canada, and Japan. Her credits include Rite of Spring (Lincoln Center), Sister's Follies (Abrons Art Center), La Davina Caricatura (La Mama), The Cat Who Went to Heaven (Brooklyn Academy of Music), l’Arbre Enchanté (Fire Island Opera Festival), Firebird (Chilean Tour), American Weather (HERE Arts Center), Cabaret (Barn Arts Collective), The Disappearing Man (Musical Theatre Factory) and numerous productions with Back Room Shakespeare Project. She is also a co-founder of Cloud City, a multi-disciplinary art space in Brooklyn, and a graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy.
