Grab your friends and head up the hill to McCain Auditorium for the Taste of Home Cooking School. This is an interactive event hosted by culinary expert Jamie Dunn, demonstrating 10 new recipes that are easy for you to take home and recreate. Tickets are $10-$25, and all attendees will leave with a gift bag including products, coupons, and two Taste of Home magazines. VIP ticket holders will receive an autographed, hardcover Taste of Home Dessert cookbook.

22nd Annual Yard Art Classics Show Love antiques? Classics? Collectibles, modern vehicles, crafts, and BBQ cook offs? Even if you only love one of those categories, you should head out to Tuttle Creek State Park Saturday, May 12, for the 22nd Annual Car Show, hosted by the Yard Art Classics Car Club. Registration takes place from 8:00 am to noon, and judging from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Awards are given at 3:00 pm and registration is $15.00. Call 785-341-7302 for details.

Celebrate Mother’s Day at Sunset Zoo

As high schools across Kansas wrap up their baseball and softball seasons, they give it their all, hoping to make it to Manhattan to play for a state championship. We, are proud to host the regional winners as they battle for 3A state high school baseball and softball championships! The Northeast Kansas Officials Association directs the baseball tournament, and game play starts Friday May 25 at 11:00 am, in Tointon Family Stadium. Semi-final games and championships will be played Saturday, May 26. The Manhattan Parks and Recreation sponsor the softball tournament with games played at Twin Oaks complex beginning Friday evening, May 25 and semi-final and championship games on Saturday, May 26. Aside from using this as a reminder to pick up a Mother’s Day card… use it as a great outing on Sunday, May 13th! Mothers will receive free admission to the zoo with a paid $2 child’s admission. Child admission is 12 and under. Zoo hours are 9:30 am-5:00 pm. Contact Ella Casey at 785-587-2737 if you have questions about events at Sunset Zoo.

Interested in volunteering for Baseball? Contact the CVB. Ticket-taker positions are open at any of 5 time slots throughout the day. Shifts are two hour increments between 9:30 am and 7:30 pm. Saturday’s shifts begin at 8:30 am and end at 6:30 pm. Call 785-776-8829, or email cvb@manhattan.org.

Get On Your Bikes and RIDE!

Sunset Zoo presents their annual Wine in the Wild Event! The date has been set as Saturday, June 2 from 6:30-9:00 pm, guests are invited to join zoo staff and the animals for a relaxing and beautiful evening of hand-selected wines, paired hors d’ouevres, live music and good company. Ticket information will be released closer to the date, so keep an eye on our calendar at visitmanhattanks.org for those details to be posted, or, sunsetzoo.com. Congratulations to Emily Chapman, the winner of the latest CVB giveaway! Emily attended the Great Escapes expo at Fort Riley in March. A collaborative effort celebrating Manhattan the K-State Insect Zoo, Sunset Zoo, Manhattan Parks and Recreation, Tuttle Creek State Park and the Flint Hills Discovery Center represented Manhattan. Emily won a “My Kansas” book, perfect for her collection which includes a descriptive piece from each town her family lives in. Emily’s husband serves in the military.

In addition to all the other fun outdoor activities that are going on, Big Poppi Bicycle Co is hosting bike rides nearly every night of the week! Grab your bikes, grab your kids, your wife, your friends, or go solo for some soothing sounds of evenings in Manhattan. Trail lengths and difficulties vary, but most rides begin at Big Poppi’s in Aggieville, and are led either by K-State cycling team members, or Big Poppi staff.
