COMMUNITY MANDEL JEWISH

CENTER OF CLEVELAND

ANNUAL REPORT 2018-2019

A MESSAGE FROM MINDY DAVIDSON

In a city that is home to some of this country’s most exceptional and respected Jewish organizations, why is the Mandel JCC such a treasured asset? It is at The J where the beautiful diversity of our community – both Jewish and secular – comes together to experience an outstanding array of social, cultural, educational, fitness and recreational offerings. All feel welcome and everyone can find a home here.

The J provides parents a safe and nurturing place for their children. More than a pool or gym or classroom, through our Early Childhood and Family Place Programs, J-Day Camps and Camp Wise, Playmakers Youth Theatre and Kids Club afterschool care, The J is dedicated to the positive development of babies, children and teens.

We give hope and help to people who are striving to get healthy. Through our robust fitness and aquatics services and our Arts, Ideas and Jewish Life events, we support active and fit lifestyles for people of all ages.

Our Lunch Plus daily kosher meals and our dynamic adult programs, such as the ever-popular Jerry Graham and Terry Pollack lecture series, help to address important needs of adults. And we offer a sense of community and connection to older adults who might otherwise be isolated.

We Believe in the Power of Partnerships.

We strengthened existing relationships and forged new ones to broaden our reach and better serve our community. This year we:

• Launched with University Hospitals, Rock Steady Boxing, an internationally-recognized non-contact boxing program aimed at helping to ease the tremors and movement problems of Parkinson’s disease.

• Continued offering Multiple Sclerosis Society –sponsored MS aquatics classes three mornings a week.

• Marked our third year partnering with Facing History and Ourselves to bring outstanding Jewish-themed films to teen audiences of over 600 as part of our Cleveland Jewish FilmFest Teen Screen.

• Presented our 19th annual Cleveland Jewish Book Festival with our Cuyahoga County Public Library partner and began a new chapter with Cleveland Public Library. We also worked with five area temples and synagogues to bring some of the most compelling and fascinating authors to Cleveland.

• Introduced, in collaboration with the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, James Beard award-winning chefs and best-selling authors, Michael Solomonov and Steven Cook, to Cleveland.

• Partnered with JNF, PJ Library and Gross Schechter Day School to present a community-wide Tu B’Shevat Celebration that attracted hundreds of all ages.

• Celebrated 21 years serving as a host site to CEVEC students (Cuyahoga East Vocational Educational Consortium). Thirty-five students, ages 16-22 with moderate to severe disabilities, received daily vocational training at The J.

• Collaborated with NCJW and the Chagrin Documentary Film Festival to bring the important film Roll Red Roll to Cleveland.

• Packed our gym, every Wednesday night throughout the school year, with Jewish teens blocking, shooting and scoring on our basketball courts through our longstanding BBYO partnership.

• Cheered on 30 JFSA Horvitz YouthAbility clients as they ran, swam, biked and rowed to victory at our 12th annual Indoor Triathlon and Biathlon and Kids Tri. This year’s sold-out event attracted 192 serious and casual athletes of all ages.

• Partnered with UH Rainbow Suburban Pediatrics and Senders Pediatrics to present enriching programs for families and parents.

• Forged a new business partnership that will have lasting benefits for our members, staff and guests for years to come. We have entered into an agreement with Traction Rec, a national software company built around the Salesforce platform. We will be overhauling all of our software and online functionality which will better support members and staff and improve the member experience.

There is Strength in Numbers.

Today, we are 11,000 members strong which includes 3,300 young members ages birth to 18. We engage and interact with an additional 20,000 community members and foot-traffic in our building each month is a remarkable 40,000. And while we are on the subject of numbers:

• Group Fitness attracted 6,800 participants at one or more of our 85 weekly classes.

• Pilates and Pilates Loft stretched 500 monthly participants.

• Personal Training strengthened 1,050 members annually.

• Small Group Training created a close-knit tribe of 30 members.

• Aquatics provided more than 1,000 participants life-saving swim lessons.

• J-Day Camps, this summer, will engage more than 500 children and teens at Playland Day Camp, Anisfield Day Camp, Anisfield B’ivrit and/or Francine & Benson Pilloff Family Performing Arts Camp.

• J-Day Camps will also provide companion counselors so that 26 children with special needs can fully participate in camp this summer.

• Camp Wise will be the Home of Happiness for 615 campers this summer.

• Playmakers Youth Theatre produced six full-scale shows featuring 200 talented cast members. Ensemble Theatre provided our teen casts the experience of performing in a professional theatre environment.

• Cleveland Jewish FilmFest and Cleveland Jewish Book festival attracted more than 10,000 attendees.

• Early Childhood nurtured 110 young children at our preschool and child care program and attracted more than 4,000 visitors to Family Place programming including the popular Tot Shabbat.

• J-Kids Club provided a safe, relaxing afterschool space for 50 grade school kids to connect with friends, do homework or take an enrichment class.

• Lunch Plus served over 11,600 meals six-days-a-week to 150 senior adults.

Thanks to the charitable support of individuals, corporations and foundations, more than 400 families and individuals in need received financial assistance totaling more than $420,000 to help defray the costs of J-Day Camps, Camp Wise and membership. One hundred percent of every dollar donated stayed at The J and was invested directly back into the lives of kids, families, and adults.

These Numbers are Just a Small Part of Our Story.

The real stories lie in the generations of families who have been personally impacted by The J. Over the next few pages you’ll meet just a few of them.

As we reflect on our successes and look forward to the year ahead, we are reminded that these accomplishments were only made possible thanks

to our dedicated Board of Trustees, generous donors, hard-working staff and enthusiastic partners. We give special thanks to the Jewish Federation of Cleveland whose support and encouragement has been vital to all that we do. Thank you, especially, to our valued members for playing such an important role in helping us deliver on our mission every day.

A MAGICAL

Robin and Aaron Taylor agree, the Mandel JCC offers everything they hoped for –and more. Their two children attend The J’s Early Childhood program, Robin is an active participant in The J’s Small Group Fitness program, and the strong, supportive community at The J makes them feel right at home.

As the energetic mother of Ryan, 4½, and Adelyn, 2½, Robin is a tireless supporter of The J’s Early Childhood program. She serves as the outreach chairperson of JPO (The J’s Early Childhood Parent Organization), a dedicated group of preschool parents who help to fundraise, organize teacher-appreciation activities and sponsor social programs. She volunteers at Sing Into Spring, an annual fundraiser supporting teacher-development programs and collaborates with Jessica Robins, Director of Early Childhood Services, on a newsletter for preschool families.

“She’s always available to lend a hand –whether it’s to set up our intergenerational Seder or to match new Early Childhood families with established ones,” Jessica says. “When we send out a request for help, I know Robin will be the first one to volunteer.”

Robin says one of the reasons she and her husband, Aaron, are so committed to the preschool is because they are both former schoolteachers. When his schedule permits, Aaron, who is completing a surgical residency, takes advantage of the preschool’s open-door policy by being the mystery reader in Ryan’s class or helping with drop-off and pick-up. But beyond their backgrounds in education, the couple truly believe The J’s Early Childhood program is a magical place for the entire family.

“The staff provide emotional support for kids and parents,” Robin says. “When my son was potty-training, Talya Sterling, his teacher at the time, sat with Ryan and me in the bathroom for 25 minutes because she could see how frustrated I was – and it was on her own time, not class time.”

The J’s Early Childhood program consists of 23 loving teachers and an administrative staff of three, guiding 110 students, ages 18 months through Pre-K, through a variety of activities that build social skills and lay an academic foundation for achieving success in kindergarten – all within a rich Jewish framework. Additionally, children participate in a variety activities unique to The J including gym,

4

PLACE

mindfulness (yoga), music, gardening, community Shabbat celebrations on Fridays and swimming

Robin says The J represents much more than a building that houses Early Childhood. “In October 2017, a group of preschool moms decided to take a Small Group Training class and we all got hooked,” says Robin, this year’s overall female winner in the Mandel JCC Indoor Triathlon and Biathlon. “I love that I can drop off my son at preschool and my daughter at Kid Kare babysitting at 9 am, so I can attend a 9:15 am fitness class. It’s nice to have it all in one building. The money I spend on Kid Kare is the best investment because I believe in self-care, and my kids see the benefit of a parent who keeps herself healthy and happy.”

Jill Stovsky, Group Fitness and Small Group Training Supervisor, says Robin inspires all participants – not just the preschool moms – to achieve their personal best.

“She always has a positive attitude and energy, is caring and considerate to members and trainers, has a smile on her face and is ready

to give 110% to every workout,” Jill says. “Just as importantly, allowing herself the time to exercise makes her a better mom.”

Whether she’s helping in the Early Childhood program or at a fundraiser, Robin is a cherished volunteer. But Robin insists what she gets from The J is as valuable as what she gives. She says the Mandel JCC family’s unwavering support will become even more important in the fall, when Adelyn enters the program for three-year-olds and Aaron begins an out-of-state medical fellowship.

“The J’s Early Childhood program is like nothing I ever could have expected,” says Robin, stressing that the sense of kinship and community extends to every aspect of The J as well as to relationships that have blossomed from her family’s association here. “I feel so fortunate to have such a village to help raise my children.”

There is something to be said about the power of food and good company to bring people together and build a caring community. And that is what the Mandel JCC’s popular Lunch Plus program excels at.

Lunch Plus offers a well-balanced, hot

kosher lunch six-days-a-week for senior adults in our community. But the delicious lunch is just the appetizer. The program also provides a variety of daily activities at Warrensville Community Apartments in Cleveland Heights, including bingo, exercise, live entertainment, speakers,

shopping trips, and health screenings. It is around the lunch table that strong, enduring Lunch Plus friendships have formed.

Ruth Goldstein, 102, and a 15-year Lunch Plus veteran gives rave reviews about the program.

“Sitting with friends around our lunch table is

WE’RE MORE THAN FRIENDS,

6

the highlight of my day,” she says. “We discuss politics, the weather, children and current events. Because we know each other so well we are more than friends, we are family.”

For Mary Marie Thomas, 97, the Lunch Plus van that picks her up at her Schnurmann House

The strong affection Yolanda Nixon, Lunch Plus Adult Services Supervisor, has for the participants who walk in the door is evident by her warm and joyful interaction throughout the day. “Each year we provide 11,600 nutritionally balanced hot kosher lunches to nearly 150

apartment is her lifeline. “I don’t drive, and the free door-to-door transportation lets me get out of my apartment for the day,” she says. “No one likes to be alone and coming here makes me feel like I am part of the world. I think I would shrivel up and die without my Lunch Plus friends.”

“It’s okay to be old, as long as you are not old alone.”

Lunch Plus newcomer Shirley Abrams, 86, who lived in Pennsylvania before moving to Cleveland, received a warm welcome from the moment she became a Lunch Plus regular. “My first day here Ruth Goldstein invited me to sit at her table and in a short time I made true friends, not just acquaintances,” she says. “As you get older, some of your friends pass away and Lunch Plus has given me a whole new community.”

elderly adults six-days-a-week. By providing such outstanding services and stimulating programming we help this precious population age in place,” said Yolanda “These seniors led full and productive lives and Lunch Plus allows them to continue to experience life’s pleasures surrounded by new – and now dear – friends.”

A retired plumber Elliot Herzog, 89, says coming to Lunch Plus gives him a reason to get up in the morning. “It’s easy to fall into the habit of sleeping late and just sitting around your apartment,” he says. “When I come to Lunch Plus I know people care about me and look forward to seeing me each day. Just like a close-knit family, when someone is not here or gets sick we all worry about that person.”

Ruth, with her lifetime of wisdom, sums it up best, “It’s okay to be old, as long as you are not old alone.”

Funding for Lunch Plus comes from the Cuyahoga County Department of Senior and Adult Service, Jewish Federation of Cleveland, Western Reserve Area on Aging and the Mandel JCC.

A PLACE FOR

Over the years, Karen and Douglas Katz and their 16-year-old twins Amelia and Abe, have sampled a full menu of Mandel JCC activities and services, including summer camps, workouts and arts and cultural activities. “From soup to nuts, there is a place for everyone at The J,” says Doug, Chef Proprietor of fire food and drink.

Just mention Camp Wise and the twin’s faces light up. The J’s overnight camp has been a home away from home for eight summers for Amelia and six summers for Abe. “At camp everyone is family, and I love how close and connected I feel about my Camp Wise friends,” says Amelia, a junior at Hawken School. “Even though we keep in touch throughout the year, it’s still so exciting when we see each other again at camp each summer.”

Abe, who will be a junior at University School in the fall, says attending Camp Wise gives him the freedom to be himself. “I can do things that are fun and goofy that I wouldn’t normally do during the school year, like wearing crazy clothes to lunch, creating skits with my cabin mates and singing and cheering loudly during meals,” he says. “I also like that Camp Wise gives me a chance to make friends with a whole new group of kids.”

Abe and Amelia have set their sights on becoming Camp Wise counselors in a few years. This summer they are participating in the Camp Wise ILS (Israel Leadership Summer) Program. They both agree their Camp Wise experience has strengthened their Jewish pride and knowledge, “without question,” says Amelia.

“One of the great things about Camp Wise is the freedom we give kids to be individuals and to grow as people,” says Rachel Felber, Camp Wise Director. “It’s so rewarding to see returning campers like Abe and Amelia develop as leaders and share their enthusiasm for camp. I know their ILS trip this summer will be an extraordinary experience and they’ll return to Camp Wise with stronger ties to Israel and their Jewish identity.

Doug and Karen have also actively connected with The J. Karen, an artist and Director of Exhibits at the Children’s Museum of Cleveland, can be seen many mornings at one of The J’s fitness classes, like Barre and 3-2-1. This year she’s working with Brandon Colon, one of The J’s personal trainers, to build her strength and optimize her workouts.

“I joined The J when the twins started going to Camp Wise,” said Karen. “The fitness classes have

been so good for me and have opened the door to a whole new community of friends.”

As a professional chef and restaurateur, Doug was recently called on to interview chefs and best-selling authors, Michael Solomonov and Steven Cook, at last year’s Cleveland Jewish Book Festival. He can also be counted on to drop Amelia off at BBYO meetings and Abe for pick-up basketball games at The J’s gym.

“My connection to The J goes way back to when I was a counselor at Playland Day Camp,” says Doug. “I’ve always viewed The J as a melting pot, bringing people of all ages, backgrounds, abilities and interests together. The best tip I could give anyone is to become a part of this warm and welcoming Mandel JCC community.”

THE JOYS OF

Sandy Zieve is determined to make sure children can spend summers at Camp Wise, regardless of their family’s ability to pay. Sandy and her late brother Richard were not able to attend camp as kids and that’s in large part why she’s so passionate and committed to making a difference for children in our community.

“My dad was a blue collar worker who dropped out of high school to support his family,” explains Sandy. “And my mom got up at 6 am every morning to catch a bus for her job downtown. We had enough money for the basics, but continuous medical bills prevented any possibility of attending summer camp.”

In 2014, Sandy, a retired teacher, established the Richard and Sandy Zieve Camp Wise Scholarship Fund at the Mandel JCC. The fund provides scholarships for two campers, preferably a brother and sister, to have a meaningful Jewish summer camp experience at Camp Wise.

Sandy recalls spending summer vacations in her South Euclid neighborhood. “The sidewalks were our playground. We played hopscotch, jacks and jump rope and gathered blackberries in the open fields behind our house where wild turkeys

10

GIVING

roamed. But I know my brother and I would have benefited from an overnight camp like Camp Wise. To this day I’m sorry we never had that experience.”

“The Richard and Sandy Zieve Camp Wise Scholarship Fund keeps the campfires burning bright for children who might never experience the joys of overnight camp,” states Traci Felder, Mandel JCC Senior Vice President of Development. “This summer more than 600 children and teens will be attending Camp Wise and approximately 20% rely on financial assistance to do so. Because of the generosity of Sandy and other donors, The J is able to provide more than $200,000 in financial assistance to help families defray the cost of attending Camp Wise and J-Day Camps.”

A self-starter and dedicated teacher, Sandy graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelors Degree in Education and began her 31-year career with the Richmond Heights Elementary School. She later supervised student teachers at John Carroll University after retiring to care for her ailing mother.

Since her retirement Sandy has not stopped giving back. For many years she donated blood and platelets in recognition of her brother’s death

to leukemia when he was in his 20s. When her aunt

Estelle Zieve was a resident at Montefiore, Sandy established The Estelle Zieve STNA Commitment to Care Fund in honor of the wonderful aides who cared for her aunt, as well as The Sandy Zieve Discretionary Fund to support Montefiore’s Mandel 3 employees and residents. Sandy is an active volunteer at The Temple-Tifereth Israel, where she established The Sandy Zieve Visiting Scholar Fund, and is also past president of The Temple’s Women’s Association and currently serves on The Temple Board.

Sandy’s motivation to give back to the community was sparked by her “brother by choice”, community philanthropist Barry Feldman. “Barry

opened my eyes to the joy of giving back and the need to fill a void whenever possible,” she shares. In 2017, Sandy and Barry together donated a fire truck to Israeli fire and rescue squads in Rehovot, Israel under the auspices of JNF. She also donated a Medicycle to American Friends of Magen David Adom in memory of her brother, Richard.

When Sandy is not thinking of her next tzedakah project, she enjoys reading, gardening, and Torah study. Her commitment to Jewish continuity is unwavering.

“Both The J’s Camp Wise and J-Day Camps strengthen Jewish identity and pride, foster a sense of community and build a connection to Israel for children and teens,” said Traci Felder. “We are so thankful to Sandy for her generosity and support. Her fund is an invaluable investment in not only children, but our Jewish community and our Mandel JCC”.

THE J IS OUR

When Darby and Jon Steiger moved to Beachwood 18 years ago, after spending several years in Washington, D.C., Darby was immediately drawn to the Mandel JCC.

“I saw this place and knew I needed to belong,” she says “It is my home. I spend almost every day here, sometimes I’m here two or three times a day, and I’ve always been excited about helping to make it such a vibrant place.”

Since joining The J, the Detroit native has immersed herself in almost every aspect of the organization. When she’s not at her job as a social science researcher, Darby is an exercise enthusiast who works out in The J’s Fitness Center five times a week, including weekly sessions with her personal trainer, Shari Barnes. She has co-chaired the Mandel JCC Cleveland Jewish Book Festival, helped at the annual Play at The J benefit and serves on the Board of Trustees. As if that weren’t enough, the energetic and creative volunteer founded Between the Lines, a book club for women in their 30s, 40s and 50s; taught a book-folding class; and will lead a monthly crafting class beginning this fall.

“Darby is enthusiastic, creative and supportive – the kind of volunteer every staff member dreams of working with because she understands all

the different aspects of our community and is so passionate about The J,” says Deborah Bobrow, Director of Arts and Culture.

Darby’s family shares her devotion to The J. Her husband Jon, who grew up in Cleveland and now works as a consumer-protection attorney, has fond childhood memories of taking science classes and playing volleyball and racquetball at The J’s former location in Cleveland Heights. He recalls making friends and strengthening his Jewish identity as a camper at Camp Wise, The J’s award-winning overnight camp in Chardon. Those transformative experiences followed Jon to adulthood: He chaired and now continues to serve on the Camp Wise committee and is a former member of The J’s Board of Trustees.

The Mandel JCC has also figured prominently in the lives of the couple’s children, Lily, 19, and Max, 16. Lily, a student at the University of Rochester, attended the Francine and Benson Pilloff Family Playmakers Performing Arts Camp, J-Day Camps and Camp Wise, where she will serve as the Lacrosse Specialist this summer. Max, a junior at Beachwood High School, has participated in Playmakers Youth Theatre, J-Day Camps as well as Camp Wise and will be working as a

companion counselor at Anisfield Day Camp this summer. Following in his dad’s footsteps, Max is a member of the David Berger Chapter of BBYO, which meets at The J, where the teens compete in a basketball league colloquially (and lovingly!) known as Jew Ball.

Jon is delighted that spending time at The J is a family affair. “It’s all about k’lal Yisroel (the Jewish people),” he says. “For me, it started at Camp Wise as the one place where people from across the Jewish community came together and it continues at the Mandel JCC which serves as a welcoming place for all Jews regardless of denomination, age or socioeconomic backgrounds. So much these days can be about focusing on what divides us but The J continues to be a place where we all unite as one family – and one community!”

Amber’s first contact with the Mandel JCC was as a high school freshman enrolled in the Cuyahoga East Vocational Education Consortium (CEVEC) that teaches vocational skills and helps students with special needs transition from school to adulthood. Amber is just one of 35 students, ages 16-22 who

receive daily vocational training at the Mandel JCC, all under the watchful supervision of CEVEC instructors. CEVEC, located at the Mayfield Heights School District, provides vocational and work training to high school students with moderate to severe disabilities from 16 districts in the eastern

Cuyahoga County area.

“CEVEC students like Amber get the whole package at The J”, says Jeremy Pilloff, CEVEC Transition Coordinator. “The J has been a host site for CEVEC students for more than 20 years. When the program first began here, students’ assignments

included light housekeeping and clerical duties. As the partnership has grown, students have been able to take on more challenging assignments such as setting up the gym for preschool activities, folding and stacking towels, recycling materials, assembling mailings and filling goody bags for special events.”

using The J’s Family and Accessible Locker Room.

“The J offers a true quality-of-life experience for our students,” says CEVEC Principal Robert Ross, who admits to being envious of the students’ opportunity to exercise during the day. “Students are not just learning how to be a conscientious

FABRIC OF THE J

In addition to receiving valuable vocational training, students learn problem-solving strategies and gain social skills as they interact and form relationships with The J’s staff and members. “Students can walk through the hallway and interact with someone who is 90, and 15 yards down the hall they can be interacting with a three-year-old,” Jeremy says, adding that many CEVEC students have developed relationships with staff members, security personnel, preschool teachers and members. “Everyone at The J is so accepting and inviting. We know we are an integral part of The J and it’s a nice feeling for both sides.”

The typical day begins with a group huddle before students begin their tasks. At lunchtime, some students leave for their home school districts, while others remain at The J and participate in a midday program, which may include working up a sweat in The J’s Drums Alive class, exercising in the Fitness Center or refining life skills, such as showering and grooming following a workout

workers they are also learning invaluable skills such as communication, socialization and the importance of staying fit and active. There’s a commitment to our collaboration at every level of the Mandel JCC. Everybody’s all-in and making sure our students are integrated into the fabric of The J.”

“Everyone at The J is so accepting and inviting. We know we are an integral part of The J and it’s a nice feeling.”

Building and strengthening community is a driving principle of the Mandel JCC, confirms Michael Hyman, The J’s President and CEO. “That’s what makes the CEVEC-Mandel JCC relationship so extraordinary,” he says. “The students are such an asset to our organization. We are as enthusiastic

about greeting them every morning as they are about immersing themselves in The J’s classes, programs and people.”

Four years later, and now a senior, Amber has built on the skills she learned through the CEVECMandel JCC partnership, and is now proud to be working in the afternoon at another CEVEC job site. Through her work at The J, Amber discovered a passion for walking and lifting weights that prompted her to join The J. “I’ve learned how to be a leader and how to have a positive outlook,” she says. The skills that she has learned at The J will give her a better chance of employment when she graduates, however Amber insists the allure of The J remains strong: “The J means family to me and I’ll be here often.”
