What Do Our Members Need? How Do We Know? Delivering Value for Chamber Members

As you'll read on the following page in this issue of the Current magazine, Chamber leaders and key partners from a diverse set of industries recently committed to two days of intentional information gathering, brainstorming, and strategic thinking as part of our Annual Retreat & Leadership Conference. It was an inspiring weekend during which we used the opening session to share feedback from the Chamber's membership survey on several important questions. The Retreat also allows us to gather useful ideas, suggestions, and insights.

As our Chamber Board and staff team, with the support and expertise of our Chamber committees and task forces, continually assess Chamber programs, initiatives, and member benefits, having your input is so important. Thank you to every member who completed our annual member survey! Here are a few quantitative and qualitative insights:

How Will Our Local Economy Fare Over the Next 12 Months?

• 67% Predict Strong or Moderate Growth/Expansion

• 24% Neutral Growth/Expansion

• 9% Declining Growth/Expansion

What Are Your Hiring Plans for the Year Ahead?

• 53% Increase Our Workforce

• 38% Maintain Our Workforce

• 8% Decrease Workforce or Are Not Sure

Golden Member Celebration

Honoring 50+ Years of Manatee

What Are the Biggest Challenges Facing Your Business?

• Staffing/Hiring/Retention and Pay Scale Pressure

• Recovery from Last Year's Hurricanes

• Impacts of Lack of Affordable Housing

• Economic Headwinds/Uncertainty

• Decreased Revenue/Cuts in Funding

Understanding our members' needs and challenges fuels our delivery of benefits to help them become even more successful. While we celebrate that a full 2/3rds of our survey respondents predict economic growth in the year ahead, what more can we do to support local businesses? How can we bring additional resources to the table that drive solutions?

I am so proud to work for a Board of Directors that prioritizes such a broad program of work and supports our fantastic team in delivering a long list of benefits through programs, committees, initiatives, events, and more. We're close to wrapping up our final "Breakfast with the Chair" member roundtables for 2025. If you didn't participate in one this year, please let me know and I will share the remaining dates with you. These opportunities include meaningful conversations that aim to learn even more about how we can offer even more value. Thank you!

We asked our members "How Likely Are You to Recommend the Manatee Chamber?" The scale was 1 star - would not recommend - up to 5 starsabsolutely would recommend. We're proud to have earned a 4.7 star rating from the members who completed the survey... but our goal is a full 5 stars! Notably, no members selected 1 star.

HCA Florida Blake Hospital has been a loyal member of the Manatee Chamber for 52 years. Thank you for your continued investment in the Chamber's mission and our community.

leadership priorities

Chamber Retreat & Leadership Conference Convenes Thought Leadership on Priority Topics

The Chamber's Annual Retreat & Leadership Conference offered the opportunity for Chamber leadership and key partners to come together for two days of thought leadership. The agenda included topics that are priorities for our Chamber including small business resources, advocacy, young professionals, education and workforce development, infrastructure, redevelopment, healthcare, regional partnerships, and more.

The Retreat was chaired by Justin Phillips, Minuteman Press of Bradenton, who will serve as Chair of Board for the Chamber in 2026. He shared these thoughts, "The value of the Chamber Retreat is all about the people you meet, and the quality of time spent building relationships that last a lifetime. There is no other event held anywhere where you can learn about all that is going on in our community while meeting the community leaders that make it happen. Manatee County is a special place to live, play and work and the Chamber Retreat is an important catalyst in helping our community stay special.”

Through a series of presentations, panel discussions, and breakout sessions, the Retreat agenda offered both an impressive line-up of experts and opportunities to take a deeper dive in small group brainstorming. Attendees included the Chamber's Board, Chamber members serving on committees, Chairman's Circle investors, and key partners whose involvement is critical to the Chamber serving its membership in ways that add value, strengthen our advocacy, and add to our ability to serve as "World Class Connectors" for our members.

Top Left: New Superintendent of the School District of Manatee County Dr. Laurie Breslin shared her priorities at the Chamber Retreat.
Top Right: The breakout session on Apprenticeships, internships, and job shadows as tools to help local employers build their talent pipeline generated lots of discussion and planning.
Bottom Left: One outcome of the Chamber Retreat is stronger connections among leaders.
Bottom Right: Christi Haley helped to capture brainstorming ideas on business/education partnerships.
Chamber Chair-Elect Justin Phillips shared his vision for the year ahead and his focus on helping members make stronger connections.
Sheriff Rick Wells, Palmetto Police Chief Scott Tyler, and Bradenton Police Chief Josh Cramer shared a law enforcement perspective at the Chamber Retreat.
Tampa Bay Partnership CEO Bemetra Simmons shared important indicators and data that help the Tampa Bay region measure key metrics in comparison to peer regions across the U.S.

November: High Impact Tools to Build Your Talent Pipeline

and a Panel of Local Employers

Apprenticeships aren’t just for the trades anymore. Old-school? Maybe. But with a fresh perspective, apprenticeships are the smartest new strategy around. Apprenticeships are one of the most effective ways for employers in the Manatee-Sarasota region to recruit, train, and retain top talent. With modern approaches and the support of CareerSource Suncoast, this proven “earn while you learn” model is helping businesses grow their own skilled workforce—reducing turnover, increasing productivity, and building loyalty from day one.

U.S. Department of Labor found that employers experience a median return on investment (ROI) of $1.44 for every dollar invested in an apprentice over the course of the program and the subsequent five years. The same study reported that the

median employer realized net benefits of approximately $17,800 per apprentice when considering both direct productivity gains and indirect benefits such as improved retention and reduced recruitment costs. And, apprenticeships are not just for what you may think of as traditional skilled trades.

Join us for our November Chamber Headliners and recharge your creative thinking on workforce development strategies that could impact your bottom line and strengthen your talent pipeline.

SMALL BUSINESS & NON-PROFIT OF THE YEAR AWARDS

Celebrating Excellence: 45 Years

The Manatee Chamber’s 45th Annual Small Business and Non-Profit of the Year Awards brought the community together to celebrate innovation, resilience, and impact. This year’s awards drew more than 200 nominations, a powerful reminder of the incredible talent and dedication found in Manatee County. From that group, 89 organizations advanced to the application stage, and 32 finalists rose to the top. Six outstanding winners were selected and are a true testament to the strength of our local business community.

Small businesses remain the backbone of our economy, creating nearly two out of every three new jobs nationwide. Over the past 45 years, the Chamber has recognized more than 160 businesses and non-profits that exemplify excellence. Their stories showcase not only entrepreneurial spirit and customer service but also the heart, creativity, and community values that make Manatee County thrive.

Frosted Pink

Frosted Pink has mastered the art of turning simple treats into extraordinary experiences. With incredible creativity, craftsmanship, and community at its core, Owner and Artist Alicia Cardin has grown her business into a beloved brand recognized both locally and nationally. This past year, Frosted Pink expanded corporate branding orders by more than 30%, partnered with a local college to host creative workshops, and grew its online presence by nearly 40%. Even while overcoming personal challenges, Alicia met deadlines, exceeded expectations, and competed at a national level - where she also shared her expertise as a featured speaker. At the heart of her success is gratitude. Alicia credits her faith as her foundation, her husband Tom for stepping in during the busiest seasons, and her “amazing lifelong friends” and networking groups for their unwavering support. “My business is here, and my friends are here,” she shared. “I’ve never had a better community.”

Kona Ice of Manatee County

Chris & Stephanie Edwards, Owners

SMALL BUSINESS

Kona Ice of Manatee County has built a business rooted in joy, generosity, and community impact. Guided by the philosophy “Be Good. Do Good. For Good.” owners Chris and Stephanie Edwards have turned shaved ice into a force for positive change by raising more than $130,000 for local schools and non-profits this year alone.

When hurricanes Helene and Milton struck, Kona Ice shifted from revenue to relief, serving free treats in hard-hit neighborhoods, partnering with law enforcement, and ensuring their team members stayed paid. At the same time, demand for their services surged — bookings grew by 13%, event spending climbed, and the business expanded to four trucks with a staff of 13 local residents.

Celebrating their 10-year anniversary, Stephanie reflected: “We wouldn’t have been able to accomplish any of this without our schools, parents, non-profits, and this amazing community.” Chris added: “Together, we make Manatee County stronger.”

of Honoring Local Business and Non-Profit Leaders

Kidspot

Kidspot is a place where progress is celebrated, potential is nurtured, and families find both expertise and compassion. Guided by values of integrity, quality, and care, their team helps nearly 1,000 children each week build skills, confidence, and brighter futures one milestone at a time.

This past year, Kidspot not only strengthened services through new partnerships and advocacy but also led a statewide effort to raise Medicaid payment rates for pediatric therapy. That achievement, effective October 2024, benefits every pediatric therapy facility in Florida, expanding access and opportunity for countless families. Even in the face of challenges, Kidspot has remained resilient, adapting to ensure children and families continued to receive the highest quality care.

CEO Tara Hawkins praised her team’s dedication, saying, “I have the best therapists at Kidspot. They are so passionate, going above and beyond to help every child and family. It’s an honor to serve this community.”

Sunshine Movers

Sunshine Movers has built its reputation on transforming one of life’s most stressful experiences into one defined by trust, care, and peace of mind. Their philosophy is simple: do the right thing, every time. With a commitment to excellence, adaptability, and compassion, they deliver not just a service, but an experience that earns lasting relationships.

Over the past year, the company achieved an impressive 40% growth in revenue, efficiency, and team capacity, all while maintaining high employee morale and exceptional customer satisfaction. Equally important is their investment in people: fostering a culture of mentorship and training that create happy teams, which in turn create happy customers.

Owner Blake Fitzpatrick credited his team and fellow small businesses, sharing, “When you give back to the community, the community gives back to you. This recognition is a testament to my team and to all businesses that lead with service and heart.”

Family Promise of Sarasota-Manatee

Family Promise of Sarasota-Manatee provides hope and stability for families when the future feels uncertain. Rooted in compassion and determination, their work goes beyond one-size-fits-all solutions. They are meeting people where they are and walking alongside them toward lasting independence.

In the past year, they’ve responded to both ongoing housing challenges and urgent crises, including storm recovery, by rallying volunteers and mobilizing resources. With partnerships including more than 60 organizations, Family Promise delivers impressive results: 98% of families remain sustainably housed, 100% report gains in personal assets, and children are thriving in school with improved attendance and success.

Executive Director Tara Maffei expressed gratitude to the judges, Chamber staff, and community partners, noting, “This honor is for all of you who get up every day and try to make the world a better place. Thank you for being our partners and we look forward to another amazing year together.”

Meals on Wheels PLUS of Manatee

NON-PROFIT

Meals on Wheels PLUS of Manatee stands as a lifeline for thousands across our community, ensuring that no one faces hunger or hardship alone. Their widereaching programs serve people at every stage of life - from delivering nutritious meals to homebound seniors and individuals with disabilities, to providing emergency food baskets, fresh produce, and vital supplies for families in crisis.

The impact in 2024 was remarkable: more than 190,000 homedelivered meals, 3.8 million pounds of food distributed through The Food Bank of Manatee, and tens of thousands of pounds of produce placed directly into the hands of neighbors in need. When hurricanes struck, they mobilized with compassion and efficiency, delivering over 110,000 meals and essential supplies across 38 neighborhoods.

President & CEO Maribeth Phillips expressed pride in her dedicated staff, board, and volunteers, sharing: “We are feeding babies, children, families, and seniors — and we couldn’t do it without our community.”

coffee club

On behalf of the Tidewell Foundation and Empath Health, we want to thank you for joining us at the Chamber's August Coffee Club at the Grief Center. It was a wonderful turnout, and we loved seeing so many Chamber members come together to network and learn about the free grief counseling services we provide to the community, thanks to the support of our donors. If you or someone you know needs grief counseling, please visit empathhealth.org/grief-services for additional information.

coffee club

Dill Dinkers Sarasota was proud to host the Chamber’s September Coffee Club at our pickleball facility located on Tallevast Road - right near the airport. We were fortunate to partner with the Chamber to host this event and welcome members from many different lines of business.

We opened our franchised 12 court, airconditioned club with the best pickleball courts in town about 8 months ago. In that time, we have hosted many tournaments, team-building corporate events, fundraisers, birthday & prewedding parties, as well as our regular programming of open and skill play, leagues and court reservations. We continue to offer the widest and deepest selection of lessons for all levels starting from total beginner to pro level drilling. We partner with local businesses to comarket services to our base of over 4,000 players.

Please reach out to us if you are interested in doing an event or want to do business advertising with us. We are offering a 10% discount to Chamber members for both of these opportunities. We plan to open another 9 Dill Dinker clubs from north Bradenton to north Fort Myers.

Dill Dinkers Sarasota takes pride in partnering with the Manatee Chamber and giving back to the community through charitable donations, hosting fundraisers, offering free/discounted lessons/court time and more. Thank you to all who attended Coffee Club, and we look forward to continuing our commitment to serving our community.
